Two strange behaviours with dovecot+postfix+squirrelmail

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi all, About a week ago I was forced to migrate my main (production) email server from RH9 to Centos4.1. The installation has dovecot-0.99.11 + postfix-2.1.5 and >600 mbox accessed email accounts. Number 1. Some users accessing thru squirremail (installed in my webserver) can read their INBOX at /var/spool/mail directory but when trying to delete a message they receive the following error message from squirrelmail: ERROR: Could not complete request. Consulta: COPY 1279 "mail/Trash" Reason Given: Internal error occured. Error report written to server log. [2005-09-16 15:08:04] and the error logged is the following: Sep 16 15:09:27 mail imap(username): mkdir_parents(/home/username//mail/.imap/Trash) failed: Permission denied I never stated that .imap/Trash when configuring dovecot and the strangest thing is that my account, as most of others, can delete messages moving from /var/spool/mail/my_name to /home/my_name/mail/Trash Number 2. Randomly, some users connecting from Mozilla Thunderbird via IMAP get an error message telling that there has been an error connecting to INBOX. Watching the maillog I found the following: Sep 16 13:07:43 mail imap(otheruser): File isn't in mbox format: /var/spool/mail/otheruser I accessed the user's inbox file with vi and found that there was a "--604" at the beginning of the file. In other case I found that the file was beginning with a truncated email message. Trying to "walk on the safer side", I changed the mbox_lock setting from "fcntl" to "dotlock" in the /etc/dovecot.conf file. Any suggestions and comments about his will be highly appreciated. Capturing audio streams with Linux?

So I got a new Pocket PC this weekend (yes, you read that right, sorry, don't like the Palms on offer currently and I can at least install software on it via Windows on VMWare). One of the main things I wanted to do with it is get Audible.com again and listen to All Things Considered from NPR on the way home like I used to. Now I find out they not only don't have an agreement with Audible any longer where I can pay them for this service, but now they are podcasting, but not the whole show. *sigh* So what to do.... My thinking is to capture the stream from local affiliate and time shift until I leave work. But how do I do this (I know how to use dump with mplayer for this) without getting one gigantic file? Anyone have any experience with this? Preston

Server Replication: CenOS, coda? lustre?

Hi list, our lab is divided in two sites and we would like to have a clone of the mail server on the second site for redundancy only (used in case of a lost of connectivity with the primary mail server, with the MX entries in the DNS the clone will receive the mails instead). The problem(s) comes with the mail partition who must be replicated and synchronized over the time (and over the net) to the cloned mail server, so the users can still access their mails while we deal with the primary server. My search leads me to the coda FS (and maybe the lustre solution, but we only use opensource soft so it may only be the one year old version - which is open...). Is there on the list people who are doing such things and if you are, can you give me some clues? What I think is something like a 'one read - multiple writes' FS who can handle the flow of mails and securely replicates it to the clone server. Do we have no choice but to tolerate the lost of some emails when the primary server stops responding? btw is it realistic? Thanks, Manuel

Boot/init problem with IBM Netfinity 4500

I hope the CentOS people don't mind me cross-posting for their input. I've just done a clean, text-mode minimal WBEL4 install on an IBM Netfinity 4500, essentially the same hardware as an xSeries 340. The install went fine but now the box will boot, run through the initrd init sequence, perform its switchroot then hang here... SELinux: Initializing. SELinux: Starting in permissive mode I don't think it's an SELinux issue though, booting with selinux=0 the system just hangs after the switchroot because it's not initializing SELinux at all. It's what's coming next that's causing the problem. On a working system (different hardware) the next stage is INIT... INIT: version 2.85 booting I've tried adding some debug echo lines into rc.sysinit incase it's something in there causing the problem but the init process doesn't appear to be getting that far. So, somewhere between the initrd's switchroot and spawning INIT something's broke. It'll boot into rescue mount and I can chroot into the root filesystem and everything in there seems to be as it should. I've tried booting with selinux=0, noapic and noprobe with no change. Where next? All suggestions appreciated. Will.

Why is yum not liked by some?

I am sitting typing this out on a Dual G5 2ghz, and I find Linux to be much more responsive than OSX. anandtech had a write-up recently where they compared OSX Server to Linux on the server side of things, iirc correctly - Linux came out on top. Hi List; Anyone know of any good retail or online outlets to but Linux desktops/servers. I would like to acquire another low cost dev box and I refuse to give the M$ chronies any of my money. Thanks for your advice...
