RAID card recommendation

Hey all, After seeing the horrible lack of support for Promise cards in Redhat Enterprise/CentOS, I am looking for a recommendation for a good IDE RAID controller that is supported out of the box (i.e. I would prefer not to have to install via a driver disk). I would prefer ATA 133 over Serial ATA for now. Thanks! Sean

[Fwd: problems with ppp]

Hi, I installed CentOS 3.3 and kept the machine up2date. I installed poptop and the newest ppp-cvs version ( ppp-2.4.3-0.cvs_20040527.6) We are running a ssh + ppp tunnel for our internet tunnel/tunnel to our NOC. After the upgrade we see these error messages while starting the tunnel: Jan 24 15:00:40 natgw modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module ppp-compress-26 Jan 24 15:00:40 natgw modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module ppp-compress-24 Jan 24 15:00:41 natgw modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module ppp-compress-21 Jan 24 15:00:41 natgw modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module ppp-compress-26 Jan 24 15:00:41 natgw modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module ppp-compress-24 Jan 24 15:00:41 natgw modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module ppp-compress-26 Jan 24 15:00:41 natgw modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module ppp-compress-24 Jan 24 15:00:42 natgw modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module ppp-compress-21 I googled and found that we have to add some aliases,like so: /etc/modules.conf: alias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp #alias ppp-compress-21 off alias ppp-compress-24 ppp_deflate alias ppp-compress-26 ppp_deflate But still after a pppd restart the problem persists (ppp failes and reconnects) ..am I a missing a package or do I have to do another thing to enable these modules? I can find the .c files: [root@natgw etc]# locate bsd_comp /usr/src/linux-2.4.21-27.0.2.EL/drivers/net/bsd_comp.c but not the modules (.o files) Thanks for your help. -- Kind Regards,

Just another note regarding SMP kernel. I've never had an issue, and am currently running dual XEON 2.4's. Well, I've had issue with kernel upgrades and the megaraid2 driver, but that seems to be a result of Dell's dkms enabled driver setup, rather than the kernel itself. Ben

Changing booted Kernel with grub

Hi, I have updated the kernel to 2.4.21-27.0.2 on Centos 3.4 (was 3.3 when I did the kernel update) and have modified grub.conf to use the single CPU kernel: # grub.conf generated by anaconda # # Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file # NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. This means that # all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /boot/, eg. # root (hd0,0) # kernel /vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/cciss/c0d0p6 # initrd /initrd-version.img #boot=/dev/cciss/c0d0 default=1 timeout=10 splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz title CentOS (2.4.21-27.0.2.EL) root (hd0,0) kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.21-27.0.2.EL ro root=LABEL=/ initrd /initrd-2.4.21-27.0.2.EL.img title CentOS (2.4.21-27.0.2.ELsmp) root (hd0,0) kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.21-27.0.2.ELsmp ro root=LABEL=/ initrd /initrd-2.4.21-27.0.2.ELsmp.img title CentOS (2.4.21-27.0.1.EL) ....... I then created a new symbolic link for Sytem.map in /boot to point to System.map-2.4.21-27.0.2.EL. When I reboot the 2.4.21-27.0.1.ELsmp is used and System.map has been changed to point to the smp kernel. Is there a step I'm missing out? BTW, the upgrade from 3.3 to 3.4 using yum seems to have worked - I'm running Oracle on the server. Thanks, Wayne

RHEL question

I work for a small company, and we're running CentOS on our servers. We are looking to possibly move our most critical servers to RHEL. We currently use apt to deploy software upgrades to our servers. I have a question about RHEL subscriptions that they don't seem to be able to answer for me. If you have an RHEL subscription, do you have access to manually download the RPMs? We would prefer to deploy upgrades using apt instead of up2date, for consistency, but we need to know whether we can even do that on RHEL. Thanks! Steve Meyers

At some point my CentOS mirror was rewritten such that the 3.3/os directory vanished, which broke upgrades/updates completely. By following the instructions in the article mentioned I could upgrade to 3.4, but no magic upgrade path has happened yet. Error when updating centos-3.3 to 3.4

The following error appeared and I'm wondering if it's important enough to file a bug report: /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.8817: line 2: gdk-pixbuf-query-loaders: command not found error: %postun(librsvg2-2.2.3-2) scriptlet failed, exit status 127 Also /etc/sysconfig/rhn/rhn-applet.rpmnew got created; the difference is that the uuid has changed from a hex key to "UNSPECIFIED". I don't recall where that hex key came from -- was it in a previous CentOS release, or could it have come from an RHN signup at some other time?

Hi list, i want to use cryptoloop functionality to encrypt a Filesystem. Here my setup.
