Local mirrors and ISP transfer bills

As a matter of policy and because I'm at the end of a DS/1 that needs to feed my customers needs, I've set up a local subset mirror of Centos 3.3. It's a subset because I don't copy any of the x86_64 directories ( no machines that use them ) but it's also a superset because I've added an additional "local" directory structure that contains things that I need - amavis, clamav etc. I can do "yum install amavisd-new" from any of my servers and have yum install or update the packages that are needed. The advantage for everyone in doing this is that I don't have to use up my DS/1 bandwidth for installs or updates of multiple machines and the mirrors don't get hit with a dozen requests for the same file from one location. (I was quite annoyed when the updated yum package wanked up my custom yum.conf) An additional benefit to me is that updates to my real customer servers go at a hundred megabit rate rather than the time it'd take to suck down a new kernel or openoffice through a DS/1. I'd like to recommend that everyone with some kind of server farm do this. The local mirror doesn't have to be wonderful - mine is a 200mhz PPro machine built out of junked parts - all it has to do is serve FTP. You'll save money in the long run and reduce the cost to the donated mirrors. Someone pays for the bandwidth, one way or the other.

Is anyone using Webmin with CentOS? I've always found it works very well with RHat Linux. I've not used RHEL so I'm not sure. I know on my SuSE server it doesn't seem to work well and suspect there are some location problems. -- <<JAV>>

CentOS-3 errata - updated httpd fixes trademark issue

A new version of httpd is available for CentOS-3 i386 This fixes a missed trademark issue in previous build. https://bugzilla.caosity.org/show_bug.cgi?id=710 refers. Updated files are :- updates/i386/RPMS/httpd-2.0.46-44.ent.centos.2.i386.rpm updates/i386/RPMS/httpd-devel-2.0.46-44.ent.centos.2.i386.rpm updates/i386/SRPMS/httpd-2.0.46-44.ent.centos.2.src.rpm yum update httpd will be sufficient to pick up this change. The new i586 kernel has been moved to 'extras' where of course it should have been put rather than 'addons' Lance

Question about YUM

Pardon my ignorance, but if I update or install a package via rpm will YUM pick that up in subsequent updates? Or should I be using YUM for installs if I plan to use it for updates? -- <<JAV>>

Mornin' all, I've got a trio of quick questions: 1.) Are there archives for the list, 2.) Any trick to installing Qt, 3.) Any tricks, once Qt is set, installing KGPG? Frenando, I had no problems with the vsftp instructions on the RedHat site, starting here: http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/enterprise/RHEL-3-Manual/ref-guide/s1-ft… The section on ftp starts here: http://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/enterprise/RHEL-3-Manual/ref-guide/ch-ft… There was one essential point that I did not get from the manual (I had to find it the hard way): any directory in your ftp server that you want to be publicly accessible needs to be "executable" by everyone ("o" for "others") -- one enters a directory by "executing" it. I recommend vsftp because 1) I assume RedHat had good reasons for choosing it, and 2) you have RedHat supporting it.
