I can see it being a web commerce site in a box, but other that that the thing is a boat anchor. Their Dlink switches are absolute garbage, after 9 upgrades I only have to reboot them once a month now. We tried the OEM Cisco switch, they gave me bad hardware, since their support people didn't know a frame from a packet they were unable to resolve it. Finally we sent the Cisco's back. Our rep finally tells us they are coming out with ethernet pass through, which we purchased. I pray that these work. The management station hangs about once every 2 months as well. Then only thing I have ever come across that compares to this POS is Sun's E10k, the memory latency rendered it useless as well. I am also perplexed how many people got sucked in on these, they where ripped to shreds on slash dot, the over subscription with 4 ports is more than 3 to 1, and qos is only of any use up to 4 queues with the Notrel hardware. Also their ROI numbers are a joke, ( I am not even considering the 150 or so man hours to get it to work at all, at 125$ a pop that pays for 4 loaded 345's) once you add the whole enchillada up, it is much cheaper to use 345's even with 14 blades in a chassis. I also have a hard time putting anything critical on a box that uses Toshiba laptop hard drives and doesn't have serial console. I guess if one doesn't need serial consoles, and real local disk IO and network IO is may be a good solution, but to me its a boat anchor. Sorry for ranting, but I needed this, just got off a bloody battle with a moron vendor who had no clue what a don't fragment flag is. They rolled out a whole bunch of Solaris patches that appear to hard code the DF flag to set. IDLE still broken

Hey, Sure enough, IDLE 1.0.3 came with Python 2.3, but the update did not fix my problem. I found a entry in RedHat's bugzilla, "Inconsistent input from numeric pad when numlock off", bug 136600. Hey, It seems to be OK just to install python 2.3 via rpm. (So my idea was not so "off the wall" after all.) Since Seth's reply here indicated that my idea was an option, I decided to try it first on a test system. When I got to the rpm download page at www.python.org, I found an FAQ exactly on point: begin quote Q) Is it safe to install these RPMs on a Red Hat system? Will they over-write the system python and cause problems with other Red Hat applications that expect a different version of Python? A) The RPMs that start with "python2.3" are built to not interfere with the system Python. They install as "/usr/bin/python2.3" and will not conflict with the system Python unless you are running on a system that ships the a version of Python which has the same major/minor number. To invoke the interpreter with these packages, you will explicitly have to run "python2.3". Note that all Python RPMs provided by Python.org and Red Hat provide a "/usr/bin/python2.3" (or similar, with major/minor number), even if they also provide "/usr/bin/python". package dependency problem

Post Turkey Day (#1 Shopping Day) Greetings! I am running CentOS-3 as a desktop distribution. Everything is fine except for Idle, the integrated development environment that comes with Python. Python is version 2.2, but Idle is version 0.8. The Idle 0.8 keyboard is driving me nuts. On my Windows box, I downloaded from www.python.org and installed Python, and got Python 2.3 and Idle 1.0.8, which is MUCH BETTER -- so much better, even for code intended to be run only in Linux, I would much rather code Python in Windows! Fedora comes with Python 2.3. I have my own CentOS mirror, so I added a fedora mirror on the side, and I used rsync to grab only the python files from fedora mirrors. I ran yum check-update. As a result, yum downloaded all the headers and reported no problems. But when I ran yum update, yum balked, giving a list of packages that are dependent on python2.2, "that is not available". The packages listed are: authconfig-gtk comps-extras firstboot redhat-config-date redhat-config-keyboard redhat-config-kickstartrhpl redhat-config-language redhat-config-mouse redhat-config-nfs redhat-config-rootpassword redhat-config-samba redhat-config-securitylevel redhat-config-soundcardredhat-config-users redhat-config-xfree86 When I wrote to the yum mailing list, I put in: "Unless Python 2.3 breaks those packages (which I think is unlikely), I thought I should be able to upgrade Python to a newer version without this kind of objection." Seth wrote back that python 2.3 would break some of the packages, aparently because the packages have hardcoded paths, and the change of location from /usr/lib/python2.2 to /usr/lib/python2.3 would break some. One possible work around would be to grab the packages on the above list from fedora in addition to just the python packages, but I would consider that a last resort. One off the wall idea is to install python 2.3, but leave python 2.2 there for the packages with hardcoded paths. (I am not sure whether yum would cooperate on this plan.) Is there a cleaner solution to this problem? Thanks, Rick

Wiki Choices

I have selected 4 software packages for us to evaluate in order to decide on the best possible engine for the much-requested cAos Community Wiki. All 4 samples are now up and running for you to try out, play around with, and evalute. Dokuwiki and PWP are strictly wikis, the former being designed specifically for collaborative documentation. Please note that I have done little or no customization to these samples thus far. Graphics, color schemes, etc. will be finalized after we choose a Wiki. Right now we're evaluating the samples for flexibility, features, ease of use, compliance with wiki standards, etc. I would appreciate your feedback. Updating on CentOS-3.3

Sorry to be beating a dead horse to death here... but... in the archives, mostly the FAQ is mentioned, but the FAQ seems to be 'coming soon'. :) I just did a clean install of 3.3. I am operating from the command line. I first mistakenly ran.. been there done that on WhiteBox as well. :( rpm --import /usr/share/rhn/RPM-GPG-KEY Got what I understand now is the expected errors. I then ran rpm --import /usr/share/doc/centos-release-3.3/RPM-GPG-KEY I looked and the file is in fact there. And I'm still getting the errors in both up2date -u and yum update. warning: rpmts_HdrFromFdno: V3 DSA signature: NOKEY, key ID 025e513b Error: Could not find the GPG Key necessary to validate pkg /var/cache/yum/update/packages/cups-1.1.17-13.3.16.i386.rpm Thanks for any help. Perhaps one good email clearly explaining the whole deal on this would prevent more of these snippets spread across the archives, until the FAQ is back up? Maybe? ;) Thanks for a great release!
