I have just set up a box - HOSTNAME mail.abni.com It has Qmail setup. I also want this box to serve as the host for our website - abni.com Can someone point me in the direction of where to go next. I am unsure if HOSTNAME will be a problem as a web server. Currently I have loaded a html doc in - /var/www/html, but I had to load from cd directly on this machine. Is is neccessary to setup ftp to be able to upload html from remote system? Don't know if this is important at this point - but this system is NAT'd to an internal ip. Heck of a 1st Linux project, huh. That's for all the advice. Beth

Thank you for the answer to my question, it is much appreciated. Although there are solutions to the problem as other people point out. I don't see the point in using a graphics card which works with drivers that have to be rebuilt everytime the kernel is updated. I've been there and done it, it is unnecessary in 2004. Kevin Wood. Hey, This was exactly the situation under CentOS 3.1. Moral of the nVIDIA story: if the monitor/display card/motherboard combination works for you, great. If not, using a display card from a different manufacturer may be the best solution. IMHO. Rick

Christopher, The wording of my email came out wrong. I did not intend to cast aspersions on CentOS. I wrote to the CentOS and/or cAos mailing lists some months ago on this topic, and I also put up an FAQ on the problem (which you can find in the FAQ's under Installation). In my mind, my message yesterday was in the context of my prior emails and the FAQ. Back then, I went through hours of trial and error tests, and I found exactly the same problem with exactly the same hardware when I was running Fedora 1 (and perhaps Debian as well -- on Debian, I am not sure, but I am 100% sure about Fedora). nVIDIA on CentOS 3.3

Hey, I tried it. The short answer is that nVIDIA cards are OK for text, but may not work at all under X. I downloaded the 3.3 ISO's, and burned new CD's. I did an X desktop install on a test bench P3 600 MHz system with a 4.3 gig drive. I did the install with a known-to-work Voodoo Banshee card to get the system going. I used a Mag DX1495 monitor, which I know does not to work on Linux with nVIDIA cards (but which works just fine running Windows with nVIDIA cards). Everything installed OK with only a minor glitch toward the end (just when going into the reboot, after setting up the monitor and display card, there were some messages about cannot find some graphics files). After going into my regular user account and adjusting some preferences, I shut the system down, replaced the Voodoo Banshee card with an nVIDIA Riva TNT 2 card, and restarted the computer. During startup, kudzu detected the hardware change, and configured the machine for the new card following my confirmation. (Windows can do this automatically, why not Linux?) Sure enough, when X tried to load, the screen went blank. Not only did the screen go blank for the X console #7, but the screen was blank for the 6 other consoles as well. I knew this because I could change to my favorite with F2, then Ctl-Alt-del to reboot. The screen stayed blank until the computer began the new boot, when the screen came back. This was exactly the situation under CentOS 3.1. Moral of the nVIDIA story: if the monitor/display card/motherboard combination works for you, great. If not, using a display card from a different manufacturer may be the best solution. IMHO. Rick

I had been noticing that memory-intensive apps such as Mozilla were taking a very long time to swap back in after having been idle overnight -- more than a couple of minutes, often, when I would switch desktops for the first time each day to the one where I keep Moz running, before the window would refresh. Scanning through the bugzilla report, I saw the kernel patch that changes the vm.pagecache defaults. So I executed echo "1 5 10" > /proc/sys/vm/pagecache My applications are now MUCH more responsive; there's never a delay before the Mozilla window refreshes, and VMware works noticeably better. If you are running CentOS 3.1 or RHEL3, you might want to try this, even if you aren't seeing serious problems with swapping. This brings me to two questions: (1) Is the aforementioned kernel patch already present in the CentOS-3.3 kernels? (2) (Somwhat OT) Is there an equivalent pagecache tweak for RedHat 9? The /proc/sys/vm/pagecache "device" is not present in RH9.

CentOS-3.3

Thank you for the long awaited x86_64 port! Looking through the RedHat pages concerning their EL releases, I find that the ES and WS versions claim to support only 2 CPUs while the AS version supports, well, more. With the CentOS releases following the ES releases, can I assume that this too is limited to two CPUs? Is this a kernel issue or something else? Should I be thinking of loading a non-CentOS release on a quad Opteron box? Thanks, Bill

kernel update

yum configuration files lost while/after updating ?

Hello centOS users, Today i've installed a fresh centos 3.1, and modified the [update] section of my/etc/yum.conf, to point on my own update repository. My update repository (3.1) contains exactly the same content that the official one. Update was successful but now /etc/yum.conf is missing :( Here it is what i've noticed during the update process: # cat /etc/redhat-release CentOS release 3.1 (final) #yum update [...] warning: /etc/yum.conf created as /etc/yum.conf.rpmnew yum 100 % done 96/191 [...] warning: /etc/centos-base-yum.conf saved as /etc/centos-base-yum.conf.rpmsave Completing update for yum - 110/191 [...] Transaction(s) Complete # cat /etc/redhat-release CentOS release 3.3 (final) => files /etc/yum.conf* /etc/yum.conf -> /etc/centos-base-yum.conf ( Broken link! read the rest) /etc/yum.conf.rpmnew /etc/yum.conf-SAVE => files /etc/centos* /etc/centos-base-yum.conf.rpmsave /etc/centos-yum.conf I don't understand what happened :-O An idea ? -- Martin
