cluster ssh edit file with vi slow

Hallo, has anyone a hint: I have 35 centos systems configured to be managed using clusterssh. Everythings works fine until I try to edit a file using vi on these 35 Systems. The connections to all targets becomes slow and unusable for minutes until the change in the file is done. Calling commandos like ls -l is reacts fast. DNS in the network isn't fast but working. Has anyone a hint for me? Thanks Ralf

I'm having trouble with dnf repos in a centos:8 Docker container after I enable the continuous release repo: 1. docker pull centos:8 2. docker run -it centos:8 bash -i 3. From Docker container: * dnf install -y 'dnf-command(config-manager)' && dnf config-manager --enable cr * dnf update The update results in: Failed to set locale, defaulting to C.UTF-8 CentOS Linux 8 - ContinuousRelease 43 kB/s | 8.3 kB 00:00 Error: Failed to download metadata for repo 'cr': repomd.xml parser error: Parse error at line: 66 (Opening and ending tag mismatch: meta line 0 and head ) /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Linux-ContinuousRelease.repo contains: mirrorlist=http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=$releasever&arch=$basearch… #baseurl=http://mirror.centos.org/$contentdir/$releasever/cr/$basearch/os/ If I switch these around by commenting out mirrorlist and uncommenting baseurl, it works. Is this a problem with a repo mirror?

New Server and noticing these maillog postfix entries: What to do about them?

I just stood up a new server running C8 stream, postfix, SA, etc. I keep seeing these log entries in maillog and wonder what to about them. I have not been able to find any research documents detailing if this is a problem nor how to prevent. Any documentation I have seen via web searches talks about configuration issues with spamass-milter. This to me looks like hackers. I get the same four lines over and over again from different IP addresses and the pid/socket/id number (26579 in this instance) are always linked. The number is different for each query/probe. Other than taking up resources I'm not seeing anything else in the logs to show a problem. Should I be concerned? Research has now shown that Redhat/Centos may have changed the default postfix setting. I do see the following parameter set: smtpd_discard_ehlo_keywords = chunking Sounds like I need to add/set this as 'silent-discard' pseudo keyword to prevent this action from being logged. sshd gives false "Too many authentication failures"

I just came across something strange with my fully updated Centos7 server. When I try to ssh into it the same way I've always done I get "Too many authentication failures". This just came out of the blue. I'm using the root account and a password. But in my sshd_config it still reads #MaxAuthTries 6 Which I think is the default. >From the console I can log in fine and when I look in the logs for sshd I can just see the the attempts I just made, that are less than six and no previous denied attemps. Any clues what's going on?

yum/dnf time constraints

Hey, i wonder if its possible to use dnf and dictate it to not install packages that are younger then $((today - 7 )) for example. If not directly possible, any other ways to accomplishing it? Sure, building repos with snapshots would work here but I am looking for additional ways ... -- Thanks, Leon

OpenVPN & nftables

Hi guys. On CentOS Stream 8 with 4.18.0-348.el8.x86_64, I cannot get openvpn-2.4.11-1.el8.x86_64 with help of 'nftables' to allow certain traffic to get in. When OpenVPN does not use 'client-to-client' it is then supposed to pass to 'nftables' & let it handle all the traffic. I'm doing something trivial - put 'tun0' iface into 'trusted' zone and add 'forward' but vpn connected clients cannot talk to each other. I also fiddle with 'direct' rules but to no avail and I hope some Centosians have that already figured out and can advise. many thanks, L.

Mate desktop crashes at startup after update to Centos 8.5.2111

I updated my main computer to Centos 8.5.2111 late last night and now Mate (my usual choice of desktop) will no longer start. >From the GDM login screen I enter my password and select Mate. The screen goes blank and appears to be loading the Mate desktop as usual, but just at the point where the desktop should appear it returns to the GDM login menu. Centos and ModemManager

For a hard wired only server, does ModemManger need to be enabled? The only thing that ever might be hooked up to this server would be an external USB DVD drive. Thanks in Advance, Jay

Notes attached to files on Gnome

Since my Mate desktop is currently lost at sea (see the "Mate desktop crashes at startup after update to Centos 8.5.2111" thread that I started earlier today) I'm using Gnome at the moment and have a question. Old versions of Gnome and the current Mate allow you to right-click on a file, select Properties and add a note to a file. After that a little "note" icon attaches itself to the file and you can go back to Properties and read your note. "File downloaded from x" or "Talked to Joe about this on Monday" or "This version doesn't work" or whatever you like. I don't know if there's a particular limit to how long a note can be but I have several multi-line notes and haven't run into a limit yet. This functionality is extremely handy and I use it extensively. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be present in modern Gnome.
