No Sound On Centos 7 VM

That’s actually the main reason to use NAT over bridged networking: to *prevent* outsiders from connecting into the VM guest. It’s a good thing for exactly the same reason your home internet service’s router/gateway’s NAT is a good thing. While it is possible to drill a hole back through the VM’s NAT layer into the guest using port mapping rules, that amounts to double NAT, which adds an unnecessary amount of complexity. If all of the threats to the VM guest are outside the LAN’s border gateway, it’s simpler to use bridged networking, and set up the port forwarding rules on the LAN border gateway. Beyond that general advice, you escape anything CentOS-specific, so you need to take the problem up elsewhere, such as https://portforward.com/ > I want to be able to access this VM from the internet. Once the VM is set to use port forwarding and a static IP, you can forward port 22 to the Internet. I recommend that the port forwarding rule expose the internal port 22 as some random value on the outside. This will cut down on a lot of script kiddie spam in your logs. Some will decry this as “security through obscurity,” but that’s bogus. Obscurity is not a bad thing in itself. The problem comes when obscurity is your *only* security. That’s not the case with SSH. I don’t recommend forwarding any other ports to the Internet, if you can possibly get away with it. SSH can do its own port forwarding, which reduces your VM’s attack surface from the Internet. With SSH acting as a poor-man’s VPN, an attacker would have to break SSH before they can get into any of your internal VM’s other services. Hello, I try to setup a new test environment with Samba and LDAP on CentOS 7 but I could not get my domain SID: [root@ ~]# net getdomainsid SID for local machine LDAP-TEST is: S-1-5-21-1044143993- 2427131616-1047417663 Could not fetch domain SID What I do wrong or forget to do? Thanks, Bernard

Not exactly linux-dependent. According to the docs for the Latitude 620 (available on dell dot com), the wireless switch is on the left side. Slide it towards the front, until its raised position indicator is aligned with the I ("off" is aligned with the O). The WiFi power indicator is on the front panel, in a group with about 4 LEDs... the WiFi indicator appears to actually *say* "WiFi" when it's lit up. CentOS 7 32-bit WiFi Hardware Switch

I recently installed CentOS 7 32-bit on a Dell Latitude 620 and my WiFi doesn't work. The software setting show me stuck in "Airplane Mode" and I need to activate my WiFi with a "hardware switch" I am new to Linux and need some direction here. I believe the wireless card is an Intel Pro/Wireless 3645A/G. Thanks, Tim

Centos & USB3

I replaced my development machine with 6 cores, 32 GB etc. I thought it would be simply inserting the existing HDDs and changing /etc/sysconfig/ifcfg-eth0 but, * in the UEFI "BIOS" USB2 and USB3 work. * in C5.11 USB2 works but USB3 does not. * in C6.5 (my install disk; OS be updated to C6.8) USB2 works but USB3 does not. On both C5 and C6 lsusb shows an entry for the plugged-in keyboard (USB2 socket) and for the wireless mouse (USB2 socket) but nothing else. Please does anyone have any ideas how to solve this baffling time-consuming problem ? Is is a UEFI (motherboard Asrock 970A-G/3.1) configuration matter or potentially the absence of a suitable USB3 driver for Centos ? Thank you. -- Regards, Paul. England, EU. Am I crazy (parted)

I swear I've done this dozens of times: a new server, going to install (CentOS 7, in this case), and I manually partition the disk before the install using parted, and do mkpart pri 0.0GB +1.0GB Except now it appears to be saying it doesn't like the +1.0GB, I *think* it's the plus sign. mark

always boot from Elrepo kernel

Hello All, I purchased some Dell Latitude 3570 laptops. They came with Ubuntu preinstalled. ( Which I swapped for Centos7) I have to use Elrepo kernel on these machines to get some of the fn function keys to work. So I installed Elrepo's kernel-ml and selected this kernel with: # grub2-set-default 0 ( after disabling secure boot) The problem I see is that after a next kernel update, the new Centos kernel will be nr 0 and the machine will boot from that kernel if I tested this correctly. Is there a way I can enable elrepo kernel update but not the regular Centos kernel? Many thanks, J.

When I tried to send a print job the job just sat in the print queue. I killed the job and deleted the printer, then re-installed the printer using the Printer configuration tool found under System/Administration/Printing. I've tried all manner of settings, both on the Libre Office document and in the Printer configuration tool. Now I can print to the printer but I cannot get the printer to print in Landscape orientation. Only portrait orientation comes out no matter what settings I choose. I've done a bit of Google work but I find nothing that appears applicable to my specific issue of not getting landscape prints no matter what setting I choose. The HPLIP web site says the latest version of hplip for my machine, RHEL 6 because they apparently have not heard of CentOS, is hplip-3.16.9_rhel-6.0.x86_64. CentOS does not have this version available in the repo. What's a guy to do?
