how to update from 5.8 to 5.latest?

Hi! I revived an old disk with CentoS 5.8 on it and want to update it to 5.latest (=5.11). However, it insists on getting 5.8 files. From the past I remember I would get a major release jump from 5.n to 5.m automatically. Or do I remember this wrong? I googled a bit around, but couldn't really find something similar. How do I update now? The repo file looks exactly like on machines that are up to 5.11. Should I change it manually to 5.11 or just 5 paths? Does it still understand that this is then an upgrade to a another major version? Or should I do something different to make it upgrade to 5.11? Thanks! Kai

OT: Backup Question/Solution

Hello, I want to switch from DVDs as a backup medium to a usb flash drive. I have been using Mondo but get tired of feeding it DVD+RWs. I purchased a 128GB flash drive. I can't get Mondo to write to it. I want to be able to make this device bootable. Do I need it reformat it from a Windows file system to ext4? I never had to format a blank DVD previously. Is there a better solution for backing up a home system to some sort of external media? TIA

Duplicate *.desktop entries for GNOME in /usr/share/applications

Hi, Today I noticed something strange. There seem to be a series of duplicate desktop menu entries in /usr/share/applications. Example: gedit.desktop and org.gnome.gedit.desktop Other example: nautilus.desktop and org.gnome.Nautilus.desktop This is annoying, since I usually edit some custom menu entries for my users. Now, if I edit both files for a single application, I end up with duplicate menu entries. Any suggestions? Software RAID and GRUB on CentOS 7

Hi, When I perform a software RAID 1 or RAID 5 installation on a LAN server with several hard disks, I wonder if GRUB already gets installed on each individual MBR, or if I have to do that manually. On CentOS 5.x and 6.x, this had to be done like this: # grub grub> device (hd0) /dev/sda grub> device (hd1) /dev/sdb grub> root (hd0,0) grub> setup (hd0) grub> root (hd1,0) grub> setup (hd1) grub> quit I'd like my server to be able to boot a degraded software RAID after an eventual hard disk failure. centos 7 :: cannot update

Hi! I have a very strange problem with my centos 7 vm : i cannot update!! I have normal ingress/egress access but my yum update fills my screen with : [Errno 14] HTTP Error 404 - Not Found i already done "clean all" ... anyone seen this problem? any idea about the issue and workarounds? [CentOS6] Manually configured Firewall (WLAN-AP plus Router)

Hello I've got this Mini-PC https://www.zotac.com/product/mini_pcs/zbox-ci323-nano everything is fine -> latest 6.8 kernel works; both Ethernet-Interfaces work and also the WLAN-Interface works; the two Ethernet-Interfaces are eth0 and eth1 the WLAN-Interface is wlan0 eth1 is connected on ISP side eth0 is connected on my LAN side to a switch; and wlan0 shall also be on my LAN side für wireless and work as an Access-Point (this works) I want both LAN interfaces (eth0 and wlan0) have the same IP subnet so I did this: http://www.microhowto.info/howto/persistently_bridge_traffic_between_two_or… also the DHCP works fine: both DHCP and DHCPv6; RADVd also works fine; in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ I added ifcfg-sit1 with the configuration for my IPv6 tunnel at Hurricane Electric there is the following entry: IPV6TUNNELIPV4LOCAL=ipv4addr here the 1st question: does this have to be the IPv4 address of br0 (LAN) or the one of eth1 (WAN)? Firefox crashing

This morning, the Firefox (45.3.0) installed (upgrade) just a few days ago has crashed already a half dozen times. Anyone else having the same problem?
