packagekit yumBackend question, perhaps

Periodically I find the yumBackend python script of packagekit really slows down my CentOS 7 system. I don't invoke anything myself which starts it and I find nothing in crontab which does either, except perhaps /etc/cron.hourly/0yum-hourly.cron. But I can't be sure that is the culprit. I don't find anything at http://www.freedesktop.org/software/PackageKit which helps me to debug this. Would someone point me in a useful direction so that I can find out what /usr/share/PackageKit/helpers/yum/yumBackend.py is doing, why it is doing it, and how it can be controlled? A query on graphic console

I'm only getting a text console with CentOS-7.2 on my (oldish) HP MicroServer. The only explicit error I see in Xorg.0.log is that no driver is found for my Pixart USB optical mouse. My query is: would that be sufficient to prevent a graphic console? Incidentally, I can use X apps, eg xpdf, if I ssh in from my laptop. SSD drives for the OS - 1 or 2?

Preparing to build a small replacement server (initially built in 2005) and normally for the OS I would buy 2x500GB drives and deploy in a RAID 1 configuration. Now we have SSD drives available - does just a single SSD drive offer the same reliability or is there advantage in deploying two in a Raid 1 config? Also, what form factor / interface is best for the SSD OS boot device on a server M/B? Anything I should be looking for? It seems most SSD are in laptop drive size, shape and interface - thus not a good fit into a server motherboard unless I'm missing something. - what devices are you using? Thanks in advance. Rob

CentOS-7.2 kernel panic

My HP MicroServer crashes with a kernel panic when booted into kernel-3.10.0-327.3.1.el7.x86_64, but runs perfectly under kernel-3.10.0-229.20.1.el7.x86_64 . HP OfficeJet Printing

There has been a bit of grumbling recently about HP printer capability in one of our smallest prototyping Labs. We have a single GigE switch connecting a Windows 7 machine and a Dell/CentOS-6 machine. The CentOS machine also has connectivity via another network. Currently, only the Windows 7 machine has been setup for printing on our HP OfficeJet 8615. Our Samba effort on the CentOS system has not been successful so we use Cygwin and ftp to move files to the Windows 7 system for printing. Being able to print directly from the CentOS 6 system would be most convenient. Software supporting the HP OfficeJet Pro 8615 is apparently available as indicated in the links and other information below. We also see that hplip was apparently part of an installation or update performed on the CentOS 6 Dell machine at some point in time. http://sourceforge.net/projects/hplip/?source=typ_redirect http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/index.html The current version of the HPLIP solution is: 3.15.11. Is there any significant possibility that printer setup or printer use on the CentOS 6 system will negatively impact printing functionality on the Windows 7 machine? Centos 7, grub2-mkconfig, unsupported sector

Hi, folks, Well, I get back from vacation, and three CentOS 7 boxes didn't come up this morning (my manager and the other admin did the update & reboot). On these three - but *not* another one or two, and I don't think those others are Dells, they're supermicro's - the 327 kernel fell into the rdosshell, I guess. I finally got one the three up by going back to the 228.14 kernel. Now, after googling and finding the CentOS bugzilla, 0009860, that referenced the upstream bugzilla, I applied the workaround discussed in it, Adding initcall_blacklist=clocksource_done_booting to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX in /etc/default/grub and then grub2-mkconfig -o /etc/grub2.cfg" On one. On the other, that's got a *large* RAID appliance (a JetStor w/ 42 4TB drives...), it seemed to work... then gave me a dozen or so ERROR: unsupported sector size 4096 on /dev/sdd. ERROR: unsupported sector size 4096 on /dev/sde. 0. Did the grub2-mkconfig actually work correctly? 1. Is it safe to ignore the errors and reboot? 2. This seems to be an old bug in os-prober, that was fixed years ago - has it slipped back in? mark

NFS problem after 7.2

I just updated my fileserver to version 7.2 and got some NFS problems after that. In /etc/exports I have the following line /path hostname(ro,insecure) Now that host can no longer mount that share. I get mount.nfs: access denied by server while mounting x Also when I do restart of the NFS server I get following in the logs Dec 30 21:59:33 files systemd[1]: Starting NFS server and services... CentOS 7, annoyances in the logs

Annoyances: 1. I'm seeing a lot of noise in the logfile for a workstation that I just built a couple months ago. One complaint is that Configuration file /usr/lib/systemd/system/ebtables.service is marked executable. Please remove executable permission bits. Proceeding anyway. *Should* anything named <servicename>.service have any permissions other than readable (and write for root)? 2. A lot of python: SELinux is preventing /usr/sbin/NetworkManager from write access on the directory /sys.#012#012***** Plugin catchall (100. confidence) suggests **************************#012#012If you believe that NetworkManager should be allowed write access on the sys directory by default.#012Then you should report this as a bug.#012You can generate a local policy module to allow this access.#012Do#012allow this access for now by executing:#012# grep NetworkManager /var/log/audit/audit.log | audit2allow -M mypol#012# semodule -i mypol.pp#012 Which policy I implemented, but why is that incorrect in the first place? 3. Finally, the noisiest of all, NetworkManager[7723]: <warn> error requesting auth for org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.settings.modify.hostname: (0) Authorization check failed: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus) and for what seems like every possible network type NetworkMangler handles, including wifi, and I yum removed NetwoworkManager-wifi.... Anyone have any answers so I can shut this up? mark

Not only am I not assuming that, I can hardly conceive of any situation in which a host will receive traffic for its own gateway.
