ddclient under CentOS-7?

Is anyone running ddclient under the CentOS-7? It doesn't seem to be in epel. I've downloaded the source and it is running, but giving me endless warnings. Could I run it as a daemon? installer and os-prober not finding Windows XP installation

I installed CentOS 7 on a Shuttle X27D box (dual-core Atom 330), and so far it seems to work fine, but it didn't set up a Grub2 entry for the existing Windows XP installation in the first partition (MBR). Running os-prober generates no output. fdisk shows that the NTFS partition is still present as /dev/sda1, and still has the bootable flag set. I added a menuentry for Windows to the end of /etc/grub.d/40_custom: menuentry "Windows" { set root=(hd0,1) chainloader +1 } and ran: grub2-mkconfig >/boot/grub2/grub.cfg and that lets me boot Windows, but I thought this was supposed to be taken care of automatically. Is there any known problem that prevents the installer or Grub2 from finding Windows XP? I don't normally set up dual-boot on production machines, but I use it a lot for testing. Thanks, Eric

Some thoughts on systemd

I haven't had any problems with systemd. However, I didn't have any problems with sysVinit over many years. But the only practical advantage of systemd that I've seen touted is that it speeds up boot-time. Even if this were true it does not seem to me worth worrying about, as - in my case at least - the frequency of re-booting is so low that even if it took twice as long it would still be a negligible fraction of my time. In fact I've been running CentOS-6.5 and CentOS-7 off and on for the last few days, and I have found no difference in boot-time. It takes my HP MicroServer 80 seconds to reboot and login, and at least 65 seconds of this is taken up with messages from HP's BIOS, checking USB devices or ports, checking PXE devices (I know I could probably turn this off), and starting up KDE. So I find this particular argument for systemd null and void. As far as I can see, the other reason for favouring systemd is more philosophical, and is based on the idea that the many different start-up routines share a considerable amount of common code, and that it is good to take out this code and put it in a separate process. That seems to me a good Unix-like argument. In principle this should simplify the algorithms involved. Installing CentOS7 boot loader into the /boot partition

I did not see any way, during the CentOS7 install, to install the CentOS7 boot loader into the /boot partition rather than to the MBR of a drive. How does one do this in the installation of CentOS7 ?

It appears that dconf-editor is just a graphical front end to gsettings. In my original post, I mentioned some of the gsettings commands that I had already tried. I eventually found the right one by searching through one by one - my original comment about the documentation still stands. For others searching the archives in the future, the command that stopped the awful auto-maximise is: $ gsettings set org.gnome.shell.extensions.classic-overrides edge-tiling false Intuitively obvious, right?... yeah. Job #1 - make it less annoying - check. Job #2 - make it less ugly... Steve

FirewallD and Network manager on production servers (C7)

Centos 7 NetInstall: Pane is dead

Hi list, I downloaded the netinstall iso, burned it to disk, and tried to install on my old Dell PowerEdge 2900 (Intel Xeon / 8Gb ram). Machine is connected to a KVM. The Centos 6 netinstall iso worked flawlessly on this exact configuration two days ago. The first thing anaconda does after verifying the media is complain that "pane is dead" in the lower left corner. At this point, there does not seem to be much I can do (system ignores keypresses). CentOS 7, not systemd questions

Question 1: has anyone used preupgrade (I used it with fc 17 -> 19, and it pretty much appeared to work, but that was on a couple of worksttions)? Opinions? Question 2: is grub still supported, or is there something that *FORCES* you to use grub2? mark "grub2 must DIE!"

dovecot + pigeonhole on CentOS-7

I've everything running fine under CentOS-7, as far as I can tell, except that spam is not being diverted to my spam folder ~/Maildir/.Spam . I'm running postfix + spamass-milter + spamass-milter-postfix + dovecot (+ spamassassin), and spam is being duly marked before ending in my inbox . As far as I can see, the current advice is to leave filtering to dovecot, using the dovecot-pigeonhole rpm. I'm wondering if anyone else is doing this? If so, what settings exactly did you use? I haven't been able to find any clear documentation, or rather I have seen widely differing instructions. My brief attempt failed, so if anyone can help I should be very grateful.
