umask setting in /etc/profile not working

Hey all, We have the following set in /etc/profile : umask 0002 so that it will affect all users. That should create all files as 664 and all directories as 775 if I'm not mistaken. Well I logged into the machine after this was set and just created a file as one of the users who complained about permissions settings on files. And this is what I saw: [user1@qa_host ~]$ ls -l test_qa -rw-r--r-- 1 user1 domain^users 0 Jun 11 10:08 test_qa I even tried logging out and logging in again just to be sure. I still got the same result. So my question is why would the file not have the permissions specified by the umask command in /etc/profile ? I really need this to work for the users. issue_discards in lvm.conf

I decided that the next time I reformatted my main desktop computer (this one) I would have a ssd installed in it to use for the boot drive. Now that Centos 7 is on the horizon, I'm thinking that the time is approaching when I'll want to do that. The last time I set up a computer with a ssd in it, that was the only drive that it had. I changed issue_discards=0 to issue_discards=1 into the /etc/lvm/lvm.conf file, set up cron to run fstrim on that drive on a weekly basis, and that was it. Since this next setup will have both a ssd and a regular hard drive in it, is there some way that I should specify that issue_discards=1 applies only to the ssd or does that matter? I see that the explanation in the lvm.conf file says "If set to 1, discards will only be issued if both the storage and kernel provide support." so I'm left with the impression that the issue_discards setting won't affect a regular hard drive even if it is set to 1. -- MELVILLE THEATRE ~ Real D 3D Digital Cinema ~ www.melvilletheatre.com

USB blues

I have a freshly built, updated EL6 system and am having problems with USB stability - at boot everything works fine but within a few hours, USB devices start disappearing randomly. At first I though the USB devices were suspect, but removing the suspect devices and an accessory PCIE USB card hasn't changed anything. As of now, a single USB device is working. (which is lucky, it hosts the OS) I've rebooted the server several times trying to diagnose the problem. After a reboot, everything works great - for a while. Is this a driver issue or just a bum motherboard/chipset? The system is built based on the SUPERMICRO MBD-X9SCM-F-O available here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182253 According to the OS compatibility matrix, the most recent CentOS 6.5 is supported: http://www.supermicro.com/support/resources/OS/C204.cfm and all yum updates have been applied. Devices read/wrote fine. ata9.00 HD errors are known, it's the old ATA O/S drive. Jun 11 01:07:36: Problem begins shortly after leaving for the day, Jun 11 03:35:44 sdi goes offline, it's one of the two USB boot devices and is plugged into the USB port directly on the main board. I want to copy a few user accounts to a new system... is there a more elegant way to copy /etc/shadow passwords other than editing the file? for instance, is there some way I can give the password hash to /usr/bin/passwd ? -- john r pierce 37N 122W somewhere on the middle of the left coast

XFS project quota and samba

Hi, I managed to configure project quotas on a xfs device on a centos 6.5 server. (just pquota in fstab, no grquota, rebooted server....) Reporting the quota settings and usage looks good. But mounting a smb-share with the proect quota enabled on my os x client shows much less space used (3GB) and 0% free. Currently 650 GB are used, the quota limit is set to 1TB. My user I'm mounting the smb-share has no quota limits set. The users are in ldap. Any suggestions or hints what might be wrong? Thanks and best regards . LDAP login problem for CentOS 6.5

Hi, We are experiencing a problem to use LDAP user accounts to login into a CentOS system. A fresh 6.5 system was installed recently to become a central server. Both OpenLDAP and 389 Directory Server were installed and configured (not at the same time) with groups and normal user accounts. The server was configured to use LDAP authentication (through authconfig and system-config-authentication). First, the LDAP user wasn't identified by running the 'id' command. The same with SSH. Although ldapsearch listed all objects correctly. Observing /var/log/secure had shown that the user is not identified at all (no uid etc.). Following another article, POSIX details (uid + gid, and set gid to some LDAP group) were set for that user and the 'id' command was successful. However, still, SSH connections are refused and the log states: "Authentication service cannot retrieve authentication info" (for pam_sss). The secure log shows that user details are unavailable (uid=0,gid=0...) to sshd. Locally, when a root performs "su user", the login is successful, home is created and the secure log state authentication is performed by pam_unix, contrast to pam_sss. Need to mention that we've tried to follow most of the literature online (RedHat directory server, CentOS OpenLDAP client setup and many other resources). None were found to be complete enough to bring a system to a working state where users are able to login and authenticate. In addition, system-config-authentication requires the use of LDAPS or LDAP with TLS. Only command line tools are able to configure simple LDAP (no TLS or SSL). However, even being a security measure, we'd like to avoid all the (serious) burden of working with certificates at first for simple experimentation. Any comment or insight will be helpful. In addition, any link to where we can find a step-by-step guide to install an (working) LDAP server with a client, will be more than appreciated. Many thanks, Moti.

How to configure user accounts without NIS

The company where I work is mostly a Windows shop, but I run a few CentOS servers and desktops. I have configured my systems as follows with Kickstart: authconfig --enablemd5 --passalgo=sha512 --enablenis --nisdomain=XXX \ --nisserver=nis1.XXX.com,nis2.XXX.com --useshadow --enablekrb5 \ --krb5realm=XXX.COM --krb5kdc=ldap.XXX.com --krb5adminserver=ldap.XXX.com The /etc/nsswitch.conf file looks like this: passwd: files nis shadow: files nis group: files nis The NIS services are provided by the Windows Domain controllers using Windows Unix Services (or something similarly named). This allows anyone that’s in the NIS database to log into any CentOS system with their Windows username and password. Home directories are automounted from a big NAS box (and are also available on Windows). This all works great most of the time. However, if the network or the NIS server goes down, the CentOS system just hangs. For CentOS 7 I'd like to make the systems more robust to network failures. I could create local accounts (I believe there is a way to autocreate an account and a home directory upon login), but I'm not sure how to go about it. This also implies that the home directories will not be shared among the systems, so ssh keys will have to be manually copied to the local home directories. Ideally, I'd like to get rid of NIS altogether and use LDAP and Kerberos for everything, but I don't know if that is feasible. I think these are the only services that we currently rely on NIS for: - passwd file - group file - automount maps (including auto.home for home directories) Before I go re-inventing the wheel, I'd like to find out how others manage multiple users on multiple systems using a central service. And in case it wasn’t obvious, I want to use the same usernames and passwords that are used in the Windows environment. Thanks, Alfred
