xhost: unable to open display

When I put export DISPLAY="IP address:0.0" ip address being my windows8 desktop then xhost + I get xhost: unable to open display "IP:0.0" when I try export DISPLAY=":0.0" I get the same thing. I have centos6.4 running on a late model Dell Blade Windows8 Alienware laptop I checked the xwin firewall setting and it is set to public network access (but strangely private network is grayed out) any ideas -- Dan Hyatt

ISA connected CF card not found by CentOS 6

I am attempting to install CentOS 6 on a PC104 stack and am experiencing issues with anaconda not being able to find the Compact Flash (CF) card hosted in an IDE-CF board connected via the ISA bus. Did someone finally remove the ISA capability from the kernel? On the same hardware I have been able to install CentOS 5. With the CentOS 6 install DVD, the system boots up and proceeds until it tries to find devices with 'existing CentOS installs', then after a about a minute pops a message indicating it can't find any media to install on, and gives you a choice of trying again or exiting the install. I would try on Alt-F2, to modprobe a driver if only I knew which one to use... the driver set for PATA has changed a lot between 5 & 6. I also tried booting with the CentOS 6.5 Live CD, to try probing the system a bit farther, but the Live CD seems to fail while either loading the kernel&initrd to memory or when attempting to boot the kernel. when it makes changes operations, the screen res changes and goes black but I see no further CD drive activity and keyboard presses are ignored (even CapsLock & NumLock don't change their LEDs). Anyone with clues or solutions on either issue? Even when this disclaimer is not here: I am not a contracting officer. I do not have authority to make or modify the terms of any contract.

build system for cutting edge software

Hi, I use centos as it is stable and provides all the software that is needed for everyday use. However, sometimes I would like to use fresh software that is not available as a package. Compiling from source is indeed an option but because centos uses oldish sources not only the sought package should be built but a lot of other packages. An idea is to build it in a directory, as much independent as it is possible from the installed libraries on the centos installation. Is there an automated build system for such an endeavour? - Gergely

Centos backup tools

Hi all! I'm building a raid box to use for backups, connectivity will be either USB3 or esata. Looking for suggestions on backup software I can use. I know there's rsync, which may be a good solution. I also find backupPC at epel, backintime also at epel, kbackup. DejaDup looks interesting, but none of the repos I'm set up to use shows it being available. some small details: I plan to use this to keep backups of my centos desktop, which has two 320GB drives in linux RAID-1. The backup box will have two 1TB drives, also in RAID-1. It will be a two drive enclosure with PS and cooling, with USB3 or esata, but not networking. I was thinking that it would be nice to have a full backup followed by a set of incrementals, and software that allows access to the state of the system for any specific date (similar to a source control system), but it may be that nothing free and/or uncomplicated will offer such a feature. wpa_supplicant - an utter failure, for some reason

Hello listmates, I feel a little embarrassed but I can not get through this one and any help will be much appreciated. I have a Broadcom WiFi adapter in a 64-bit CentOS 6.5 laptop. Trying to get it connect automatically - and it just would not - no error messages, nothing. With the same config NetworkManager connects without a hitch, I have to compile the wl module out of an SRPM - but after that it seemed to work fine under the NetworkManager but not automatically, via wpa_supplicant. Thanks in advance for any and all advice. The WiFi security is WPA. Cheers, Boris.

SCSI not settling???

I'm getting a lot of this at boottime: udev still not settled. Waiting. udevadm settle - timeout of 0 seconds reached, the event queue contains: /sys/module/scsi_wait_scan (11707) udev still not settled. Centos 6.4 How to increase console font size.

Just installed 6.4 on and old Dell laptop and the font only takes up half the screen. I have tried setfont and altering grub.conf vga= but it does not work. I have read that I must disable uEFI but have not idea how to do that. Can anyone help? I only use this machine in console mode and I just want the full screen font size that I used to have in 5.x versions. Thanks, Richard
