Re-mount a drive using its label name

Hello everybody, I would like your opinion on the following question, why this happens in centos and how to fix this (or a possible work around). I have a drive with no partitions and formatted with xfs filesystem. I give the drive a custom label "mydrive" and I mount it under /dev/mountpnts/mydrive. Then, I add a corresponding entry to fstab. These, are the steps I followed, mkfs.xfs -L mydrive -f /dev/sdf mkdir /dev/mountpnts/mydrive mount -L mydrive /dev/mountpnts/mydrive/ cat /etc/fstab, LABEL=mydrive /dev/mountpnts/mydrive xfs noatime,nodiratime,nobarrier,logbufs=8 0 0 These steps mount the drive under the mount point specified. If I remove the drive and insert it back in after a while, the drive doesn't mount, even though I have the required entry in fstab. `mount -a` doesn't seem to work and provides me the following output, mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdj, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so If I restart my server, the drive gets mounted in the correct mount point and works fine. Can someone please shed some light on why a restart is required to re-mount a drive and if there is way to mount the drive without a restart. Thanks, Raghuv Adhepalli.

What just got updated

I checked for updates and it had 5 to do so I started that, left and came back and the update panel was gone. Is there a way to check what was updated? (centos 6.5) Thanks, -wes

Centos 6.5 problems with UEFI PXE and GRUB

Greetings, Im having issues booting UEFI PXE Centos 6.5 using Grub. Ive followed the configuration specifications in the documentation and yet my install always seems to hang past the grub menu at [Linux, EFI ...] Ive added ksdevice=bootif and APPENDIP 2 to ensure the proper nic is selected however this does not prevent the hang. Set static IP

Hello, I want my CentOS 6.5 computer to have a static IP. Currently I get the IP I want because I have my router assign it on the basis of mac address. I placed the following file as: /etc/sysconfig/networking-scripts/eth0 DEVICE="eth0" BOOTPROTO=static HWADDR=00:1F:D0:9E:AE:67 ONBOOT=yes TYPE=Ethernet USERCTL=no IPV6INIT=no PEERDNS=yes NETMASK=255.255.255.0 IPADDR=192.168.0.99 GATEWAY=192.168.0.1 NM_CONTROLLED=no I also disabled Network Manager with chkconfig. It didn't work. When I rebooted I had no IP address for eth0. Should I leave all the other scripts in /etc/sysconfig/networking-scripts unchanged? Suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you, Joe

Virtualising legacy CentOS 4.x servers

Dear all, I look after a number of CentOS 4.x servers running legacy applications that depend on ancient versions of various things (such as MySQL 3.x) and which can't be upgraded without non-trivial development effort. I've been considering virtualising them and as a test have been trialling with a company that uses Parallels Cloud Server 6. However, I've run into a roadblock in that the Parallels Tools installer in PCS6 require a version of glibc higher than that which is available in CentOS 4.x (v2.5 required versus v2.3.4 installed). Without the guest OS tools installed it's impossible to migrate a VM from node to node or back it up without shutting the VM down first, which is less than useful. So I have two questions: 1) Does anyone know if there is a version of the PCS6 Tools built against glibc 2.3.4 available anywhere? 2) Is there an alternative virtualisation environment I should be looking at which fully supports CentOS 4.x as a guest OS? And if so, does anyone have recommendations for a hosting supplier that offers that environment (ideally UK based). Many thanks Simon

That damn nixspam is blocking my hosting provider's mailhost *again*; it was on and off yesterday, and today it won't even let me remove it, and that was after I emailed my hosting provider yesterday.... Having an issue with rkhunter; now, my user's running debian, but I should think this would be configurable on any distro: rkhunter's started complaining about a missing file... which is in his home directory, which is NFS mounted. What it says is that two files don't exist, but are in its d/b. I'm on his system, he's logged on now, and they're there. Now, I'm not sure it *should* be scanning nfs-mounted directories. Certainly I, among others, log out at night (this runs in the middle of the night), and it doesn't complain on any other systems. One last thing: he's one of my most-knowledgeable users, and when he updates the system, he assures me he always runs rkhunter --propupd, so we're both confused. Any ideas? mark PS And if the CentOS *MUST* use nixspam, which I am *very* strongly of the opinion that we can find something better, is there no way to whitelist regular posters? Certainly, when we created a Big Eight newsgroup, back in '93? '94? we allowed for that....
