deleting FakeRaid -> what happens to the partitions/data

Hi A server has FakeRAID installed, I want to remove it to make it mdadm driven .... If I delete the FakeRAID including - disabling it in the BIOS - removing the dmraid driver from initrd - deleting all meta data from partitions - deleting all dmraid packages is the data still available on the drives, i.e. the partitions, filesystem and files are still ok? I know that FakeRAID controller is not a real hardware controller and the driver (thus CPU doing the work) makes it look like one drive ... So if you create a partition it would be a standard (and same) partition on each of the drive connected to a FakeRAID? Memory Not Recognized

Hello All, I noticed that my CentOS 6.5 system reports that I only have about 10.9 GiB of RAM when I actually have 16384M. I have already tried adding mem=xxM to the end of the kernel line in grub.conf. The result is the same. Any suggestions? Joe

Mirroring Disk (Apologies for the new thread I deleted the original)

Answers to questions... It really depends on your use case. I'm looking to be able to pull out old dead drive, and replace it with new (almost up to date) drive and reboot. The USB disk is a 1TB disk in a case. > Been considering dump and restoring to the usb disk periodically? or > maybe something using LVM or maybe creating and breaking a RAID 1 > array? Constantly making and breaking a RAID1 with a USB drive is probably not helpful. It's just more wear and tear on the OS drive, because it has to be constantly read in order to mirror the target drive, and your USB drive is probably not what you want to boot off of if your system drive fails. You'd be much better off with a permanent RAID1, but if you can't do that then at least make a RAID1 to a USB enclosure which contains the same size and interface drive as your current system disk. This way if it fails you can swap in the backup drive and not have to boot from a USB drive. Yeah I thought that would be the case, as I said above I'd like to be able to boot from the USB enclosure but the plan is to replace the failed internal with the disk from the USB enclosure. Would LVM be any help or is it just a complication? I defiantly leaning to the nightly dump/restore into a similarly formatted disk.

Hi, I recently installed some fresh CentOS 6.5 machines and it took only about 20 minutes until the file system (ext4) was broken. And with "broken" I mean, that the system wasn't able to find vital system libraries any more! I were able to reproduce it on highly different systems: - A fresh installed CentOS 6.5 64 Bit on a virtual machine (KVM) - A system which I installed some weeks ago (also a KVM machine) and did a "yum update" which upgraded to kernel 2.6.32-431.5.1.el6. - A fresh installed CentOS 6.5 64 Bit on native hardware on a RAID 5 assembled with mdadm - A CentOS 6.4 system installed some months ago on native hardware with mdadm RAID 5 The last system wasn't able to boot after the upgrade and crashed with several kernel panics which I can show as a screenshot if there's any interest - but the display resolution was quite low so there are not many helpful information :-( Actually, I assume that there's anything broken with the new kernel or at least the kernel module for ext4 file system. You can reproduce it by just doing a "yum update" and rebooting the system. If it comes up, reboot it again and manually do an offline filesystem check - or just do some writing activities on the disks. Is it just me? I don't use any 3rd party repositorys and it blows my mind that no one else seems to notice...! Greetings from Wuppertal, Germany Max

Emacs and Ispell, Aspell and Hunspell

CentOS members, This is another CentOS, Emacs upgrade question: Since upgrading from CentOS 5.10 and Emacs 21.4.1 to CentOS 6.5 and Emacs 23.1.1 I am trying to get a spell checker working in emacs. Previously I used aspell and everything "just worked". Now I gather that hunspell is the norm but after installing it, when I try it it "just doesn't work". If I try to (for instance) spell check a region (ispell-region) the session hangs and a "ps axfu" from another seesion reveals: mark 8464 0.0 1.2 313764 50252 ? Emacs, Gnus, HTML emails and nbsp's...

Is there an emacs guru amongst the CentOS bretheren who can help me with the following: Since upgrading from CentOS 5.10, Emacs 21.4.1 and Gnus v5.9.0 to CentOS 6.5, Emacs 23.1.1 and Gnus v5.13 HTML emails are now being renderd in a pretty reasonable way (thanks!), *but* non-breaking-spaces (nbsp's - UTF8 0xC2, 0xA0) and a few other "unusual" characters are always displayed (both in my graphical display and in terminals and PuTTY sessions) as octal bytes (e.g. \302\240) instead of being renderd as glyphs. Why? Is it to do with the locale? That says: $ locale LANG=en_US.utf8 LC_CTYPE="en_US.utf8" LC_NUMERIC="en_US.utf8" LC_TIME="en_US.utf8" LC_COLLATE="en_US.utf8" LC_MONETARY="en_US.utf8" LC_MESSAGES="en_US.utf8" LC_PAPER=en_GB.UTF_8 LC_NAME="en_US.utf8" LC_ADDRESS="en_US.utf8" LC_TELEPHONE="en_US.utf8" LC_MEASUREMENT="en_US.utf8" LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US.utf8" LC_ALL= Something in Gnus. Something in emacs? Is it something else? If I make a file and insert UTF-8 characters using hexl-mode: C2 A0 0A C2 A3 0A I see the correct glyphs (nbsp (an underlined cell) and a pound sign) when I open the file in emacs. RSync Problem

I use an external USB drive and rsync to back up everything in /home. The USB drive has an entry in fstab and I mount it with "# mount /mnt" The rsync command I use is: rsync -av --delete --include='.thunderbird' --include='.filezilla' --include='.putty' \ --exclude='.*' --exclude='Desktop' --exclude='VirtualBox*' /home/* /mnt/home/ After I deleted one of the users on my system, including their home directory, I ran the rsync command. I found that the deleted user's home directory wasn't deleted from /mnt/home. I thought that the --delete option deleted everything on the destination that was not on the source. Please help. Mirroring disk.

OK all my HP Microserver is purring away nicely now, as usual I looking for the rainy day. Although my data is on a RAID 5 array my OS is on a single disk. Any suggestions as to the best way to have a copy of my OS on an attached USB Drive? Been considering dump and restoring to the usb disk periodically? or maybe something using LVM or maybe creating and breaking a RAID 1 array? Just not sure of the best plan at the mo. Any tips?

Centos 5.10, Firefox ESR 24.3.0, Rendering Failure

Further to my very recent concerns that <ol type="a"> gives digits. type="a" was "depreciated" in HTML 4.1. "depreciated" means to me to be of a lesser value or to be prepared it may be abandoned. It does not, in my version of English English, mean removed from the HTML specification. Therefore it should function 'normally' in modern browsers like FF. HTML 5 has officially resurrected it. I now discover that <ol style="list-style-type:lower-alpha;"> also produces digits. Where should a BUG report be filled ? With Centos, the provider of Firefox ESR 24.3.0, or its parent Red Hat ?
