password problems new centos 6.4 install and sl63 install.

greetings, a previous install and updated centos 6.4 from dvd 1 x86_64 got trashed. not sure of cause. no big deal. install practice never hurts. :-) now, installation is: CentOS-6.4-x86_64-bin-DVD1.iso installed as; CentOS (2.6.32-358.el6.x86_64) - root (hd1,2) SL-63-i386-2012-08-24-LiveCD.iso installed and updated as; Scientific Linux (2.6.32-431.1.2.el6.i686) - root (hd1,5) /dev/sdb5 /home after initial install of c6.4, second install phase went well. rebooted and checked boot up 3 times, all with successful logins. needed some kde configuration information from sl63, rebooted, selected sl63, boot ok. when tried to login to kde, user 'geo' password refused and user 'root' password refused. booted sl-62-i386 install dvd in rescue mode; chroot /mnt/sysimage passwd root passwd geo exit exit reboot login to sl63 as 'geo' and 'root' ok. ran email, ran some web work. rebooted to centos, 'geo' and 'root' passwords refused, tried twice, booted centos dvd-1 in rescue mode, made same entries as with sl62. rebooted to c64, login to c64 as 'geo' and 'root' ok. rebooted to sl62, tried to login as 'geo' and 'root', nfw, refused. it is now a continuous cycle of repeating of above. any and all help, ideas, suggestions, will be greatly appreciated. tia. -- peace out. in a world with out fences, who needs gates. tc.hago. g .

off NM problem [low priority]

On Centos 6.5, I use NM to bring up the VPN to my office, and to disconnect from it. every now and then I screw up and disconnect the LAN itself instead of the VPN. once I do that, even after reconnecting to the LAN I'm hosed. /etc/resolv.conf hasn't been put back to the non-VPN version, so I manually fix that. but even then I can't get any name resolution. I'm sure that rebooting IS NOT the right answer, but it's the only one I've come up with that solves the problem. OpenVPN problem

I'm having problems communicating with a remote server, with openvpn. I can link with ssh ok, but the link stalls when viewing any but the smallest texts. I tried reducing the tun0 MTU, though only from 1500 to 1400, but this seemed to have no effect. Before trying a larger reduction, I'd like to clarify two points. Firstly, is it necessary to re-boot the remote machine for the change in MTU to come into effect? Or is it sufficient to re-start the openvpn service? (I'm reluctant to re-boot the remote machine unless it is essential.) Secondly, must the MTU be changed at both ends? odd mcelogd problem

CentOS 6.4, 2.6.32-358.11.1.el6.x86_64 (And no, I can't just upgrade - the users have to be sure that the computational results will be correct....) It's throwing ECC errors. Trying to start mcelogd, first it said nothing. Restart told me "Please load edac_mce_amd module." I did a modprobe edac_mce_amd, and lsmod tells me it's in. But now service mcelogd restart Stopping mcelog Starting mcelog daemon [FAILED] AMD Processor family 16: Please load edac_mce_amd module. [FAILED] And in messages, mcelog: CPU is unsupported#012: Success "Success"? Anyone have any ideas what I'm missing; why I've loaded what it says it needs, and it still thinks it needs it? mark

Centos-compatible motherboards

Hi all! I'm toying with the idea of spending some Christmas money on a new MB and CPU to upgrade my desktop. Although I've always been partial to AMD chips, I'm tempted this time to find something Intel-ish, I5, quad core, or so. In looking at mommyboards at New Egg and Amazon, I find so many I am unable to make reasonable determinations regarding suitability, so am hoping some of you who have new(ish) intel-compatible boards could offer some hints. Also, I'd like to keep the cost of MB, CPU and RAM to no more (or little more) than $300-350. (seeing as how apparently mid-range I5 chips cost over 200 each, that may be a vain hope.) I expect that the newest ones may work with something bleeding edge like Fedora (et al), but I like centos for my desktop since it doesn't have the ridiculous churn rate of the more aggressive distros. I can't bring myself to relish the thought of rebuilding my main desktop twice a year (or even once a year). So, any suggestions will be greatly appreciated! usb umts stick recommendation for centos 6

Hi, we have a DSL outage in our office, which will last for one week. So I have to use an usb umts stick, can someone recommend a stick / provider for germany? Maybe which works out of the box? I know O2 has explicit Linux support but only Fedora 16 and up.... Thx Rainer

A puzzle with grub-install

I ran into a problem when using grub-install experimentally in what is obviously a foolish way, since I was unable to boot the machine afterwards. I got round the problem, as I shall explain, but I'm still interested to know why the problem arose. Having added a second hard disk to my CentOS-6.5 server, as an experiment I gave the command grub-install /dev/sdb after checking (with fdisk) that the new disk was indeed sdb, while the disk on which CentOS is running remains sda. I assumed that this would leave the MBR on sda unchanged, so that I would be able to boot to the current system as before. But I found that this was not the case; on rebooting the machine hung, with a repeating "-" on the screen. The only way I was able to recover the current system was to use a CentOS Live USB stick I had to install CentOS on a spare partition (sda12). With that system running I was able to mount the old system (on sdb10) as /mnt, and the boot partition (sdb2) as /mnt/boot, and then give the command grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda On re-booting the old system came up. (I may say I also tried to run grub-install from the USB stick, but was completely unable to do this so as to re-install the old system. Basically, the old disk had become sdb, while the USB stick was sda. So I mounted /dev/sdb10 as /mnt and /dev/sdb2 as /mnt/boot, and gave the command grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sdb I then removed the USB stick, and tried - unsuccessfully - to re-start the machine.) But I'm puzzled by my experience, which seems to suggest that running grub-install /dev/sdb actually affects the MBR on sda.
