To discard... or not to discard...

Hi, I just recently read a post about SSD triming (discard vs fstrim): http://www.howtogeek.com/176978/ubuntu-doesnt-trim-ssds-by-default-why-not-… far I used discard on all my SSDs. Now I am wondering if it is really worth it to switch them all to a crontabed fstrim... Anyone made the switch yet? Thx, JD

I've been blocked twice this morning, and removed myself once - the first time, by the time I got to work and looked at the list, it was already gone. My hosting provider works with those jerks at manitu. I've ranted a number of times over the years at why their method is a *lousy* method for blocking spam in the second decade of the 21st century. Now this: here's another argument as to why the CentOS list should stop using them... when I went to remove myself, the email that told me I'd been blocked, also said who'd reported my mailserver (that is, hostmonster's mailserver) as sending spam was someone at selfip.biz. Go do a whois on them - it's someone at home, using dyndns, not an open obvious company. This means that anyone who gets annoyed at *anyone* served by any ISP can report them, and block everyone at that ISP. Go ahead, tell me this is *reasonable* in 2013. mark

Thanks, I was able to upgrade yum by deleting some mirrors which I didn't need slready. But I still cannot install wine. When I'm running configure script I'm getting "checking whether gcc -m32 works... no configure: error: Cannot build a 32-bit program, you need to install 32-bit development libraries." However, I've got "libstdc++-4.4.7-4.el6.i686" installed. 64bit centos and wine

Hello everyone. Has anybody ever tried to install 32bit wine to 64bit centos. I was able to run 64 bit wine, but some of mine application require 32 bit wine, but I cannot install it. It says to install 32bit development libraries at first. Does it make sense, what I'm doing ? I will be really appreciated any help. Cheers Igor

Every 3ware card (also from LSI) I've used also works OOTB with CentOS. If you are new to hardware RAID, the 3ware interface is a lot easier to learn than the MegaRAID's. (I suspect that other LSI cards, including the 9201, work fine with CentOS too; perhaps you can post your error messages so we can see what's wrong, instead of replacing a working controller.) I tried to respond to this earlier, but *%@#$%^& manitou blocked me again. I wouldn't recommend the RocketRaid. We have a few of them here; they work ok, but Highpoint, who makes them, are *not* really great about updating drivers once the card's out their door. The last one we put back into service, I had to find the last source code they had for that card, several years old, and then fix the code before I could compile it. (At least it was in C). Second on MegaRAID. The ones we have here are the Dell rebranded PERCs, and we've never had trouble, except with ones nearly 10 years old. mark

libgtkhtml-editor

Guys/Gals: On 64bit 6.5, I've had to "yum remove" the Xiphos package because it was causing errors in "yum update", complaints about it requiring libgtkhtml-editor. SOHO colour laser printer recommendations

Hi List, I'd really appreciate some recommendations for colour laser printers for use with CentOS. It's for light home use with CentOS 5 and CentOS 6 systems. Must have: 1. Colour. Quality not that important as mainly for kids school project type of stuff. 2. Ethernet connectivity - want something I can plug into the network 3. Cheap running costs - don't want to be spending a fortune on toner 4. Linux support I have very little experience with printing on Linux. I'm assuming I want a laser with Postscript and/or PCL emulation, and Linux driver support (still not sure exactly what I should be looking for here). Top of my very short list at present is: Brother HL-4140CN at £167 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Brother-HL4140CN-Network-Colour-Printer/dp/B0047753… I'd appreciate any other recommendations people might have. compiz workspace panel show 4 workspaces when I have 8

Compiz is showing only 4 workspaces when I log in. If I go in to the compiz settings manager -> general -> general options -> desktop size it says 8 in Horizontal Virtual size. I can get it to work right if I move Vertical Virtual size to the right then back to 1. How do I get it to stay showing 8? Thanks, -wes

Hey, (sorry for cross-posting, you will find this message also in centos-virt, maybe, but this was not intended and a mistake) I have a system with a mdraid 1 ... md1 : active raid1 sdb2[1] sda2[0] 1465031488 blocks [2/2] [UU] ... this raid partition has a lvm physical volume with one volume group and several logical volumes. This machine is running since years and I seldom touch the lvm config. What does this "Found duplicate PV b79x0kLXR9mAC0z0IZUxyJG1VC24Crl7: using /dev/sda2 not /dev/md1" message? Some logical volumes are virtual disks vor kvm guests. Are these guests using sda only and not the mdraid? -- Markus
