Install to internal USB?

Saw a trick today, wondering if anybody else had done/tried this? Assume you have a 1U rackmount with 4 front-accessed drive bays, and you want all four bays for a 4-disk RAID5 storage. The idea is to use an internal USB adapter and a couple of bigger USB thumb drives to install to, RAID 1 style, freeing up all your external drive bays. At first, I didn't think that a thumb drive would hold enough for the O/S, but in actual production use for a file server with 14 TB of redundant storage, the OS actually uses less than 6 GB! Wireless problems

Hi guys, I have a problem with my Centos 6.4. I am experiencing a Wireless Disconnects, some time ago I had them constantly each 2-3minutes. After upgrading to new kernel (and other software from "Software Update" I am still exepriencing disconnects but every 10-15 minutes. It makes me angry because I am doing a lot of work with ftp servers. Card: *Atheros Communications Inc. IBM Storwize V3700 storage - device names

Hello, I have IBM Storwize V3700 storage, connected to 2 IBM x3550 M4 servers via fiber channel. The servers are with QLogic ISP2532-based 8Gb Fibre Channel to PCI Express HBA cards and run Centos 5.10 When I export a volume to the servers, each of them sees the volume twice, i.e /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc, with the same size. Previously I have installed many systems with IBM DS3500 series of storage and the servers see one disk per export. I am using the MPP drives from this package: http://support.netapp.com/NOW/public/apbu/oemcp/apbu_lic.cgi/public/apbu/oe… I came upon the IBM site, saying to configure multipath (I never did it for DS3500 series). When I did, a new device came, /dev/dm-7, but my goal is to have one /dev/sdX type of device and no device mapper. I read that Storwize support DMP RDAC, and DS support MPP RDAC, but does anyone else have experience with such setup and can give an advice/hint? Thanks in advance.

chipsets etc to avoid for CentOS 6.x

It's time to purchase hardware again, and I'm going through the usual "of that which is on the market, what will CentOS run without leaving new hardware collecting dust for a year"? I'm looking at a number of commodity-grade machines (ie: desktop grade will suffice) with reasonably fast CPUs and able to use at least 8GB each (preferably 32GB). These will be deployed as software development systems in run mode 3 (ie: no real graphical requirement). Does anyone have suggestions, assuming a CentOS 6.x install, what CPUs/chipsets, etc, to avoid? (Or alternately, which ones still commonly on the market are fine?) I've typically stuck to Intel CPUs, and prefer Gigabyte or Intel motherboards. I'd prefer to minimize the likelihood of non-working or marginally-working hardware. I've had a look at the supported RHEL hardware list, but they typically just list Xeon-based machines. Thanks in advance. Devin

3TB disk with 6.0.4 not booting

As you know I've been testing centos on an old mac pro. I have 1 disk left of 4 that I'm testing on. I had a 3TB disk and stuck it in and couldn't get centos to boot off of it. It would install, but not boot. I then got "old" disk 4 installed with it. Any idea why the 3TB disk doesn't work? I pulled out an os x 10.6.3 and that would install and boot. I resized the disk in osx and reinstalled centos, but centos still won't boot off the 3TB disk. Thanks, -wes

Workaround for (EL6.4) rdesktop-1.6.0-10 Woe

rdesktop has been spewing error messages since the update to CentOS 6.4. Aside from the continuous stream of errors in the terminal window from which it was launched, there are a number of usability issues in the remote session. The pointer does not change shape when moving over various window components such as column separators, window borders, etc. The background doesn't refresh within scroll bars, making it difficult to tell where the scroll handle is. We've also found that MS Visio will crash and hang the remote system if run within rdesktop. Other strange phenomenon are also manifest in various applications. In short, rdesktop 1.6.0-10 is buggy and unstable. See this upstream bug report for more: Bug 914279 - regression in 1.6.0-10.el6: Mousepointer and selections not drawn properly https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=914279 We've been putting up with it, hoping that an update would be published upstream. Even though this issue is affecting customers upstream, as evidenced in the bugzilla report, a bug-fix update doesn't appear to be imminent. I decided to rebuild the Fedora 19 SRPM on CentOS to resolve the issue. It appears from the bugzilla remarks that others have done this trivially. With a few simple precautions, we've done just that. I'm sharing our work-around in the hope that it will benefit others in similar circumstances. This process assumes you have a build machine properly setup with an rpmbuild environment. echo 0> /selinux/enforce

When does echo 0 > /selinux/inforce need to be used? I.e., where is selinux enforcing itself on the system to protect it? When I do yum install of some package, it seems to work (not being blocked). When would doing something not work because selinux is watching it (or whatever that process is doing)? Thanks, -wes

Running MacOSX as VM under CentOS 5.10?

Is it even remotely possible to run MacOSX (or Darwin) as VM under CentOS 5.10 / xen? Or am I better off not even trying and just getting a MacMini or MacBook to just jack into my LAN? I just need a 'build box' and possibly something to do light testing (eg does the program run? Does the GUI come up?). I don't really have the *physical* room for an iMac, unless the screen is tiny.
