Current RHEL fragmentation landscape

Hi, I've quickly made an incomplete list of the RHEL and clones/forks landscape to see what the current situation is. The interesting question will be how this will change in the coming years and how it affects Red Hat/IBM and the Linux users in general. RHEL ("The Original", quasi Gold standard until June 2023) CentOS Stream (rolling RHEL next) Oracle Linux (almost 1:1 rebuild with own patches, adds own packages) Rocky Linux (tries to be 1:1 rebuild) AlmaLinux (ABI compatible rebuild) EuroLinux (status unknown) Springdale Linux (status unknown) Navy Linux (status unknown) SUSE RHEL fork (status unknown) For me it's clear that RHEL and certain clones/forks are here to stay. Large enterprises or institutions like CERN and Fermilab will continue to use RHEL and their favorite rebuild. Whoever likes it or not. The same goes for a lot of SMEs and private users. It will be interesting to see what turns out to be the new Gold standard. " Personally I expect we may see not one, but two Gold standards in the future. To run commercial applications, RHEL will stay the Gold standard. To run all kind open source software, one of the clones/forks may be the winner. Red Hat may also be attacked in the commercial space by Oracle and other commercial players. I can't predict the future but my feeling is that AlmaLinux has a good chance to become the second Gold standard. To those who call my discussion OT, let me say this: CentOS has brought us into the current situation. Bear with us as we find our way out of this trap. I'm interested to hear some other ideas before I leave. Thanks, Simon

Somehow the text of my message got deleted: I'm still using CentOS 7 because both security and stability are important to me. While CentOS Stream may, or may not, have comparable security, it is severely lacking in stability. IMHO both CentOS 8 and CentOS 9 are gigantic piles of garbage. When the time comes that CentOS 7 no longer meets my needs, I'll be switching to some other distro, most likely Debian. Hi, As I found out yesterday, the fragmentation of the "Enterprise Linux" ecosystem just started to come true. I expect this is only the beginning and Red Hat may also start to completely hold back sources of non GPL software which is part of the "Enterprise Linux" ecosystem. I'm really wondering, how will this help anybody and how will this help Red Hat in the long run? I've been using and promoting the Red Hat "(Enterprise) Linux" ecosystem for more than two decades. But, who will I promote in the future if this ecosystem becomes fragmented? I'm still trying to find answers but it's quite difficult. How do others, who were using and promoting the Red Hat "Enterprise Linux" ecosystem, handle this new situation? Kind regards, Simon

Mirror problems with elfutils-debuginfod-client

The package elfutils-debuginfod-client is needed for even a minimal install, but it is not available on most mirrors. I suspect some are excluding mirroring debuginfo packages with just a *debuginfo* pattern to rsync, where they should do something like *-debuginfo-*.rpm (which should be good for now as I don't see any package with just "debuginfo" in the name, even in Fedora). Tomcat 7 in CentOS 7.9

I know Tomcat 7 has reached the EOL. Still it is available as the only option for Tomcat in the CentOS 7.9 repository. How can I know whether security backports are available in CentOS 7 for all packages related to Tomcat 7? Are those rpm packages still safe? Thanks in advance! Andrea Grillini

CentOS 7 EPEL rpms

Running C7 and using geany 1.37 which is the latest version available for C7 in EPEL. geany-plugins in EPEL, however, are at 1.38 and there is a bug in one of the plugins that could conceivably be due to version mismatch. I have just spent two hours searching high and low to see if there might be a site where geany-plugins-1.37 could be found but to no avail. I have found 1.31 on several sites and, of course, 1.38 since many mirror EPEL. I have relied on cern.ch in the past and hoped they might have it but could not find geany at all searching their site. I should also add that I could not get the source code for 1.37 to compile on my system due to some tool that is too old so did not pursue that further. Is anyone running 1.37 under C 7 and can confirm that projectmanager plugin is at 1.37? Thanks.
