Let me say that your question does not match your subject. I run a 32-bit CentOS with virt-manager installed to monitor the virtual machines running on a 64-bit CentOS. That leaves the following: Is it because I'm running CentOS 5.9 in both cases? Or is it because I performed a full install from a DVD in both cases? That being said, It's a fact that virt-manager will run on a 32-bit OS. Thanks, Gene Poole

Xyratex disk units

I am wondering if any one knows of a way to manage Xyratex disk shelves from CentOS (in particular CentOS 4). More details: Some years ago I installed a NAS unit from Exanet which consists of 2 rebadged IBM x3650 head nodes and a couple of Xyratex disk shelves with a total of 96 TB of raw disk, connected by fibre channel. The operating system is based on CentOS 4.4, but is modified, and runs a proprietary file system. It has pretty good performance and I'm happy with it. You may know that the company went bust some years ago, so I have been running this system unsupported. I am loath to give up the disk space though. The two things I worry about are, the fibre channel connection and the external disk trays. Unfortunately, what I know about fibre channel is very little. They are emulex HBAs, and I guess there used to software called lputil, but this is no longer available at the Emulex site. It has been replaced by something called HBAnywhere, but I have not succeeded in building that on CentOS 4. Uprading the OS is out of the question I would think while maintaining the file system capability. And the other question is how to manage the LUNs on the Xyratex's. I'd be grateful for any info anyone has on either. Tony Schreiner

Although it is complex. After all, if too many choose CentOS, there may no longer be a CentOS. However, I don't think I would refer to CentOS as a "parasite" as the author Matt Asay does. More appropriate to call it symbiotic. Is the relationship a 50/50 affair? Not sure. Complicating matters even more is Oracle Unmistakable Linux.

Back-up connection

Some weeks ago, I asked if anyone had set up a backup scheme for a remote server. By backup here, I mean an alternative arrangement that can be called upon if eg the DSL connection to the remote machine fails. I received one interesting reply: ====================== At home, besides my fixed lines, I have two gsm-modems, one low-speed (that came free of charge with one of my fixed lines), the other is high speed, but pre-paid, normally off) ====================== I meant to respond at the time, asking for further details, but forgot, and now I have lost the original message. So now I am posting again, asking if anyone has implemented any such arrangement. If you have, I would be very interested to hear the details. In my case, I spend time in two countries - Ireland and Italy - and have servers in each place. Binaries are not open by definition. They are built for one specific environment by one specific compiler and one or both both of those may not be covered by a GPL of some sort. OT: laptop recommendations for CentOS6

Hi all, First of all, sorry for the OT. I need to buy a new laptop for my work. My prerequisites are: - RAM: 6/8 GiB (preferably 8 GiB) - Processor: Core i7 - Disk: up to 500 GiB for SATA, 128 GiB for SSD. - Graphics card: Intel HD (I really hate to use Nvidia or ATI Radeon graphics cards). The most important tasks will be: - Surf the web :) - Read email - And the Most important task: I need to install complete virtual test labs on it using KVM, Xen and VMware suites to run several different types of OSes: RHEL, CentOS, OEL, Solaris-like, BSD, Windows 2012/2008 R2, etc. Any suggestions?? My first choice will be Toshiba or Lenovo laptops and of course it needs to be 100% compatible with CentOS6 (or almost at 95%). Thanks.
