Interesting admin info: ipmitool

I've used ipmitool any number of times, but never for more than getting info, or setting the server name on a Dell LCD screen. However, I had a server screaming about intruder alert, intruder alert, er, "Chassis intrusion detected", and I thought there might be a way to shut it up (this after pulling the server and reseating the lid). A quick google found, on the first page, an 8 page document by Dell called "Managing Dell PowerEdge Servers Using IPMItool". It's clear, comprehensible, has links to the ipmitool project, and to the IPMI standard, which has documentation on calls and parameters. It also has some examples... including "How to turn off intrusion detected events".... Other than the device ID being different on my Penguin than on a Dell PE, it was completely accurate... and it worked. A bit scary - I didn't want to turn off everything, or brick the server, but it worked as advertised. So, push that onto your stack for the time when you need it, folks. mark

How does such long term support work?

I've had nothing but trouble with BSD/Linux over the past year or so. I've been on Centos 6.4 for about a half day now and I am loving it. I am just wondering though, how does a 7 year support cycle work? I see that there is libreoffice which is kinda new. Is this because open office is under oracle's influence? I am on gnome 2 right now, will I wake up one day in the next 7 years to gnome 3 ? I really don't want to. Will I just have gnome 2 + bug fixes? If so how does the community do this if the gnome people drop support for gnome 2. Thanks-Patrick

How to know hardware RAID failure

Hi, We have on an old Dell 2850 with 4 SCSI drives, where we put a Hardware RAID5 on 3 disks and left 1 as spare. I dont remember exactly, but the RAID was setup in the BIOS, and when installing CentOS6, I just saw "1 drive". If it was software RAID, disk failure could be seen in /proc/mdastat, and I could simulate failure with mdadm. As far as it is hardware ATM, how, at least, to know the state of the RAID array? (syncing, healthy,...) Thank you. -- RMA.

Tomboy on F12 to Gnote on Centos

I'm trying to convert my Tomboy notes from an old F12 system to Gnote on this CentOS 6 system. What I have found buy googling so far: - Tomboy notes used to be stored in $HOME/.tomboy - Some Tomboy upgrade moved them to $HOME/.local/share/.tomboy - Gnote stores its notes in $HOME/.local/share/gnote - Gnote has a Tomboy note converter add-in My Tomboy notes are in /home/steve/.tomboy so I had the old Tomboy system. I have the Tomboy add-in installed in Gnote I have tried copying my notes from $HOME/.tomboy to $HOME/.local/share/gnote and I have also tried copying them to $HOME/.local/share/tomboy but in either case I don't see them in gnote. Do I have a directory name wrong or is there some action needed to start the conversion? Thanks, Steve

What does this Centos Network Manager error message mean

Here is the error message: http://i41.tinypic.com/2zz71bp.png Wireless Network Authentication Required Unlock Keyring: The application 'NetworkManager Applet' (/usr/bin/nm-applet) wants access to the default keyring, but it is locked. The funny thing is, (a) I've never seen this message before (in a year of using CentOS) (b) I am the system administrator but it won't take the root password (c) I don't even know 'what' a default keyring is in the first place (d) This only happened after I changed the SSID of my home network When I tried to connect to my home network with the new SSID, this message came up. Funny thing is that I never got past it, since it seems to want a password that isn't my user password nor my root password. I still connected to the network though. So, it's odd all around. In fact, it makes no sense to me. Q1: What password is it looking for anyway? (it's not root or the user) Q2: Why did it let me connect to the home network Note: If you get this, I am on the network even without typing whatever password that application seems to want.

Missing Chrome Dependency

Hey All, What's with this? google-chrome-stable-28.0.1500.45-205727.i386 requires libstdc++.so.6(GLIBCXX_3.4.15) : Success - empty transaction I got a software update notice that offered google-chrome, but when I tried to install the update I got a dependency issue.
