IPV6 auto configuration cannot be disabled from if script.

I want to configure IPV6 on the system and not use some auto ipv6 config. Strange errors with NFS under CentOS 6.3

Hi all, This morning, my centos NFS server returns these error messages: RPC: fragment too large: 0x00800103 RPC: multiple fragments per record not supported RPC: fragment too large: 0x00800103 RPC: multiple fragments per record not supported RPC: fragment too large: 0x00800103 RPC: multiple fragments per record not supported RPC: fragment too large: 0x00800103 RPC: multiple fragments per record not supported I have googled arround this type of error and the only solution that I have found is to change tso to off in network interface, but error continues. Minor packaging bug: with the new xulrunner (at least for 32-bit): When running the /usr/bin/xulrunner script, it looks for the binary in /usr/lib/xulrunner-17.0.3, but all of the files are actually installed in /usr/lib/xulrunner. libtiff with bigtiff support

Can anyone tell me if the current libtiff-3.9.4-9.el6_3.x86_64 RPM has bigtiff support built into it? I need this for tiling rather large images for the Virtual Microscope project I am working on, and I am having issues building the 4x versions that only seem to be available for F18. looking for sssd basics and simple config with existing ldap centos 6.3

Hi, I'm planing to setup a new samba fileserver as a member to an existing samba 3.x SMB. The old server is still nss-pam-ldapd configured (historic left overs). As I dont have any pressure to have the new server up and running within the next few hours, I liked to set up sssd with our existing openldap. After googling and reading some documentations from redhat/fedora I think I do have a basic clue on how it should work. But at the end I'm not getting it up and running the way I expected. My question: "rpm -ql sssd" shows a config in /etc/sssd/sssd.conf, but this file dose not exist on my system. (May be some how a packagebug?) Dose anybody has a working example file to share with me? I tried to edit some examples from the web and put some config together, but without working success. New DNS server up and running

A new and improved instance of onlo.htt-consult.com is up and providing DNS service. It is my 1st Centos 6.3 production box. This is Phase I which included IPv6 working 'right'. Phase II will be to sign my zone and get fully with DNSSEC. I want to thank people here in answering my questions. Now on to other projects. I have a couple dozen to tackle.

Ideal RAID-1 Stripe Size for IMAP Server ?

Hi there. I'm currently configuring a brand new email server(IMAP) which will run CentOS 6.3 x64. So lots of files on the data volume. I'm confused about stripe size for my data volume. I'm using 2x500GB for OS in RAID1 and 2x2TB SAS for DATA in RAID1 which is hosted on a HP Smart Array P420 Controller with 1GB in Cache/Battery Backed Up. Both these array's are on the P420 controller. The initial configuring from Array Configuration Tools gives me 256K in Strip Size. On both array's. What would be ideal for the data volume, and or the OS array ? I'm going to run XFS for the DATA volume. Any help and or suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks allot folks. Over on the bind-users(a)lists.isc.org list, I am in a discussion about building the named.zone file, as Centos 6.3 does not provide it. It DOES provide a named.ca which is already old (wrt AAAA records) compared to the named.zone provided by internic. A few contributors have stated that now the hints are built into bind and you can see this with: strings /usr/local/sbin/named | grep A.ROOT-SERVERS.NET Well it looks like Centos has it at /usr/sbin/named and there are no such strings in there. Oh, these hints come from "lib/dns/rootns.c in the source code tree". So are the hints built in here?

Setting up bind - location for includes

I am setting up bind this time around (just rebuilt my test machine via Kickstart) without chroot. I have a fair number of includes for named.conf; I have two views and other odds and ends. My thoughts are to make a directory; /etc/named.d to put all these includes into instead of 'dirtying' up /etc. This way the only files I replace/add to /etc are named.conf and rndc.key (I would like to work the latter around to also be in named.d, but this impacts rndc itself). Thoughts on this? Anyone else have a well segmented named.conf file?

Set an Ethernet Interface Metric

Hello All, I ended up answering my own question, but figured I'd share this and open up for discussion. It is possible to set a metric with 'route' or `ip route`. What I'm wondering is if there's a Red Hat/CentOS way of assigning a metric in the network-scripts? Answer: [0] (from 2008) works. ex: METRIC=10 Deployment Guides: EL5 [1] and EL6 [2] do not mention metrics on the previous interface configuration pages. *** The output from `ifconfig` does NOT show the metric as I set it, but the output from `route` does. I suppose this is the intended behavior? The default gateway route would have the metric and not the interface. add CA to centos clients

hi, I need to deploy an internal CA to our hosts. Fedora is planning something I could use now http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/SharedSystemCertificates but it is not there yet ;-) I already have a deploying infrastructure (cfengine), so my question is: what files do I need to move around for a systemwide installation? cheap cloud providors

Hey guys, Apologies in advance if this question is in poor taste. But I've really fallen in love with learning about the cassanrdra database. The only problem is that it doesn't run very well on an t1.micro instance at amazon and the larger sizes are quite expensive. An m1.small can do the trick, while still not optimal. So I was wonder if there was any real value in the cloud or even VPS world where I could setup a small Cassandra ring and go to town learning the ins and outs of how it operates. Every time I go to http://bugs.centos.org/my_view_page.php I am shown, under "Reported by me", three problems with the CentOS Bacula packages which I reported in 2011, complete with proposed fix, but which never got any love (status still "new"): 0005271 missing dependency mt-st bacula - 2011-11-28 12:44 0005261 make_catalog_backup.pl creates .my.cnf with bad mode bacula - 2011-11-24 11:19 0005260 bad symlink /usr/sbin/dbcheck bacula - 2011-11-24 11:08 As I have since switched to Simone Caronni's better maintained Bacula packages I would prefer not to be constantly reminded of that useless effort anymore. updating a Centos 6 lamp stack

Hello, I've got a new centos 6 system it's i386 and I'm wanting to update it's lamp stack, specifically httpd, php, and mysql. Also, if postfix as an MTA would be available that's a plus. I've checked out the centos wiki and it looks like I have two choices for third party repos for this task. I have enabled rpmforge as of now. The two repos I'm seeing are Les RPM de Remi repository, and IUS Community Repo. I'm wanting from user's who have used either or both impressions, pro conn of both and which you'd prefer. Thanks. apcupsd, odd behavior

As we have every day, we had a power blip overnight. one, at least, of the servers connected to a SmartUPS via cable, announced that "power exhausted, initiating shutdown" (which I've disabled). The thing is, I know the servers on that UPS draw a ridiculous amount of power, but I don't see that on the others... and this was three seconds, not minutes, after it announced there was a power outage. Has anyone else seen this behavior? mark

Here's the state of my search: BatteriesPlus is... odd. The corporate site, and after a phone call, tell me they don't do GSA, but some of their franchises do. I called the local one, and they do. However, the only RBC 43 they offer, I might as well buy direct from APC, at well over $300 for the set. Battery Sharks, and Apex, don't do GSA... but they *do* offer replacements for about $100 for the set. Having checked with my manager, we'll try the open market quotes. I would like a third recommendation, so I can offer purchasing three quotes. Recommendations? And thanks to all. mark

Really changing the hostname

I need to change the host name on a test server, and in the past when I used hostname to change the hostname, it did not seem to change it everywhere. I really don't want to do a rebuild just yet, but I have to feel confident that hostname is really changed (reboot is not too much of an issue). What is the recommened practice? Other than get it right the first time.

Nothing to do with what happens at ifup time. Things would already be broken by then, though. I do see how not using the same names the kernel would auto-assign would avoid the race problem, but I'm not sure it happens in CentOS. OT: LSI SAS1068e / Perc6/iR RAID Health

Is anybody here monitoring Dell SAS6/iR RAID health? I have a mix of CentOS 5.9 and 6.3 installs on the PE1950s. I'm finding drivers and Megaraid Storage Manager downloads via LSI's site, but I'd prefer not to install a bunch of crapware. All I need is the proper LSI daemon which exports info via SNMP. I've used check_sasraid_megaraid Nagios script [0] in the past for PERC5i and PERC6i controllers in Dell PE2950s. For 2950s I've only had to install sas_snmp-3.11-0003.i386.rpm from LSI to get rolling. I've tried installing parts from the MSM zip/tarball mess to install only the lsi_mrdsnmpd daemon (lsi_mrdsnmpagent). I suppose to future proof myself it would be wise to still run "chkconfig network on"; it hurts nothing if on and could save me if a future release is shipped defaulted off. hmmm. I did set network on in my kickstart to do a netinstall; maybe that is why network is on now? Doesn't matter, I suppose.

DNS search in anaconda

Hi Does anyone know if its possible to set a search domain within anaconda to use during kickstart? I'd rather not have to set a FQDN for a certain service as its location specific that is dependent on SSL and therefore the certs. I cant see anything in the docs listed but i thought i'd ask cheers

Disable notification in gnome

Hello I've changed from Ms Windows 2008 R2 to CentOS 6 recently, and there are many aspects to learn in relation to command line ( Bash scripting, package system managing, file system and so on )... I need to apply as much as I can of Network Infrastructure knowledge ( DNS, DHCP and Virtualization .... ) concepts using CentOS 6 GUI... I know that I must learn dealing with linux using command tools and that will come, but it has much more of time, so, Am I forced as a learner to follow command line tools before going to GUI or I can get a good knowledge and experience by implementing my skills on GUI ? routing problem?

hi, at home I have setup a kvm virtualization lab. I have a layer 3 switch, a host with 3 nics and centos 6.3. In the layer 3 switch I have setup a couple of vlans: vlan 1 (default), 5 (quarantaine) and 10 (out-of-band-management). nic0 is configured in the switch as a trunk interface that sees all vlans. nic2 is an access port on vlan 5 and nic1 is not yet in the picture ;-) eth0 is bridged to br0. It also has the host default gateway. I have also created eth0.5, br0.5, eth0.10 and br0.10 interfaces to add vm's to vlan 5 and 10 and that works, I can successfully create vms and assign them to br0.5 or br0.10 and they get ip's from a dchp server in the correct network and their traffic is correctly routed in the switch (inter vlan routing works). I can access the vms from my workstation on on vlan 1. Now I configure eth2 with an ip address in the range of vlan 5 (in the switch it is an access port in vlan 5). This is the ifcfg-eth2 file: DEVICE="eth2" HWADDR="00:15:17:51:B8:AB" IPV6INIT="no" BOOTPROTO=none MTU="1500" NM_CONTROLLED="no" ONBOOT="yes" IPADDR=192.168.5.10 NETMASK=255.255.255.0 # GATEWAY=192.168.5.254 The GATEWAY parameter is now commented out, but it does not matter. The interface on the virtualization host comes up all right. But I cannot access it from my workstation on vlan 1 when accessing it to vlan 5. >From the virtualization host I can reach the switch vlan 5 interface which is its gateway. Selinux blocking bind access to named/data and slave directories

I was getting permission errors (seen in /var/log/messages) in accessing these two directories within my chroot tree. I was pulling out what little hair I have, as the permissions were identical to those on my Centos 5.5 server. So I switched selinux into permissive mode and now I have /var/named/chroot/var/named/data/named.run and my ..../named/slave/ stubs. What is the selinux magic to allow bind to write here?

bind-chroot rpm only builds chroot tree?

I just downloaded the bind-chroot rpm and looked into it with Archive manager (so I am lazy), and no files, just the chroot tree. I am assuming there is some script that Archive manager does not show, or I am just missing it, because the ROOTDIR= did get added to /etc/sysconfig/named (and the one in the bind rpm is without this line). Just interesting that if you chroot, you are expected to know that everything needs to be placed there. And they leave the /etc/named.conf there untouched. Seems they should remove this or make it a symlink? And what about /etc/rndc.key? your chrooted bind uses the /var/named/chroot/etc/rndc.key and rndc uses the /etc/rndc.key, or so it seems, so your rndc.key is left unprotected outside of the chroot jail? Am I missing something in the rndc setup with chrooted bind? I am not seeing any special instructions on this in the Redhat documentation.

In /etc/sysconfig/named that gets installed along with bind-chroot there is a comment that basically says: Don't forget to add "$AddUnixListenSocket /var/named/chroot/dev/log" line to your /etc/rsyslog.conf file. All these little touches you need to find out about. But is there any order in rsyslog.conf? Do I just add this line to the end of it?

motherboard for cents 6.3

Seems like overnight every motherboard that worked with linux has DROPPED off the face of the earth. Every motherboard I looked at is using the realtek 8111 chipset and a northbridge that is not supported. Example: GIGABYTE GA-970A-DS3, does not work with linux I tried disabling the onboard NIC and using a PCI-E intel card I always use and that would not work either. The north or south bridge is messing with the network card. The card asks for a PXE boot but after centos starts it can no longer find kickstart files, network is messed up. I was using Asus M5A88-M and they are no longer available. Anyway - anyone have a suggestion for and AMD motherboard that works with linux be great if it has onboard video (gaming is not needed), onboard network, SATA nothing super special just "working". I'm seeing following error: error: bind-libs-9.3.6-20.P1.el5_8.6.x86_64.rpm: headerRead failed: hdr blob(48062): BAD, read returned 515 error: bind-libs-9.3.6-20.P1.el5_8.6.x86_64.rpm cannot be installed Similar error is seen for other rpms as well. Installing SOGo on Centos 5

First, I am a *nix heretic. Second, I have been using one form of Redhat or another since v5.2 c.1999. For the past 11 years or so I have used Webmin (shielded through IPTables for those horrified at the security implications) to administer my servers, both local and remote. I simply could not get my job done in the time available without it or something much like it. The CLI of the underlying utilities is the final arbitrator of course and there 'man <utility_name>' is your ever-present friend (usually). Nonetheless, the syntax of even the most common *nix commands is often arcane and similar utilities frequently have such subtly different variations that ones mind is sometimes driven to distraction with the inconsistencies. A GUI, whether web based or not, at least clears away that problem for many routine tasks. In any case you will be forced to learn the cli for some utilities from the outset because there is no safe way of using them otherwise. And situations will arise where knowing how to creatively combine utilities with pipes on the command line will save a great deal of time and trouble. A GUI will never give you those opportunities. But for most day-to-day stuff a GUI saves a considerable amount of effort and prevents a great deal of error. Both of which for a newcomer to Linux are of great value. As others suggested, having a test server for experimentation is a really, really good idea. I tend to fire up guest instances on my kvm desktop for such 'proof of concept' trials but I suppose any crash-and-burn system would suffice. Good luck and welcome. Eclipse CDT not working properly

Hello again, Another problem with my new CentOS 6 installation: The C/C++ support in Eclipse seems to be partial or missing - even though eclipse-cdt is installed. Eclipse starts all right, and I get a C/C++ perspective, but: 1. If I open a C++ file, it's sent to an external editor. 2. C or C++ is not mentioned in Preferences. 3. I can't find a reference to CDT under Help->About Eclipse Platform->Installation Details I've tried reinstalling all the eclipse packages, and also resetting the workspace as well as the settings in ~/.eclipse, but it made no difference. pcl to pdf

Everyone, I am currently using a vsifax program (pcltotiff) to convert pcl files to tiff files on a SCO Unix box, and then I am using tiff2pdf on a Centos 5.9 box to convert the file to a pdf. There are other commands that deal with multiple page tiff's and pdf's that are part of the process, but the above basic process has worked very well. The only thing I would like to enhance is a better resolution of the tif file and therefore the pdf file; the problem being the resolution capability of pcltotiff that comes with vsifax. I am limited on the SCO box as to what I can install; it is too old to admit to, and is scheduled to be upgraded to a new Centos system. Obviously, I can get the pcl file to the Centos system easily, do any of you have suggestions of being able to convert a pcl file to pdf on the Centos system. Greg Ennis

selinux and tinydns

Hi all, tinydns starts up fine, selinux reports no issues (now after a day of clearing errors). If I turn selinux back to permissive in /etc/sysconfig/selinux, and reboot, tinydns responds to queries. If I turn selinux back to enforcing and reboot, tinydns does not respond. Monitoring /var/log/messages shows no errors from iptables/shorewall or selinux. The only way I can find an error is performing the following:- netstat -npl | grep tinydns # gives me the process id strace -f -p <process id> From this I can see that tinydns is reporting an error of:- recvfrom(3, 0x606720, 513, 0, 0x7fffc7321ec0, 0x7fffc7321edc) = -1 EACCES (Permission denied) I've got setroubleshoot set to send me an alert on first occurrence of an issue, so far none received. Does anyone know how I should proceed from here ? Thanks Phil.

htaccess is not working

Hello, I'm new here, and after trying by myself, I'm looking for some help ... I have installed webalizer, on my CentOS 6 server. Root path for webalizer is /var/www/usage/ It's working, but after putting a .htaccess in /var/www/usage/ and the appropriate .htpasswd in /var/www/html/auth/ there is no password asked. Here are my files : .htacess : AuthName “Veuillez vous identifier” AuthType Basic AuthUserFile ”/var/www/html/auth/.htpasswd” .htpasswd : carmelo:myencryptedpassword(with htpasswd) Can you please help me ? Overdue upgrade of bind

I am **FINALLY** starting in on upgrading my domain server. Right now it is still on bind-9.3.6 via Centos 5.5. Stepping right up to 9.8.2 in Centos 6.3. I am pretty good with zone files and the like, though I will finally get to tackle DNSSEC (and I can go to the sources Austien, Vixie, and Liu if need be or even the bind list!), but right now I have much more mundane issues. Like it looks a bit like the chroot tree has changed! In particular under /var/named/chroot/etc I use to put my named.conf with all the include files. Now I see sub-directories named and pki there. I am ASSuMEing that pki will be for the DNSSEC; but where is the documentation? I tried looking for readme files, but can't find anything related to the chrooted bind environment. What file is the location of named.conf set up in? The zone files look to go in the same place I have them on the old server under /var/named/chroot/named/var/named.

Intel video

Hi all Please someone tell me how can I enable intel video driver on centos 6.3 x86_64? It's an acer laptop (5736z) with Mobile intel 4 Series graphics. I tried with Xorg -configure, but give me an error something like number of created screens not match number of detected screens. Anyway, I tried to copy xorg.conf.new to /etc/X11/xorg.conf and reboot, removed nomodeset ... on laptop display I can't see anything, even the backlight is turned off, but on the VGA output appear the desktop background without menu, taskbar and icons and I can switch between tty-s. mdadm: hot remove failed for /dev/sdg: Device or resource busy

Hello all, I have run into a sticky problem with a failed device in an md array, and I asked about it on the linux raid mailing list, but since the problem may not be md-specific, I am hoping to find some insight here. (If you are on the MD list, and are seeing this twice, I humbly apologize.) The summary is that during a reshape of a raid6 on an up to date CentOS 6.3 box, one disk failed, and was marked as such in the array, but is not allowing me to remove it: # mdadm /dev/md127 --fail /dev/sdg mdadm: set /dev/sdg faulty in /dev/md127 # mdadm /dev/md127 --remove /dev/sdg mdadm: hot remove failed for /dev/sdg: Device or resource busy And in dmesg, I get an error like so: md: cannot remove active disk sdg from md127 ... More details, including mdadm -D output and other diagnostics, are at http://www.spinics.net/lists/raid/msg41928.html . As I note there, the array seems fine otherwise, but is not currently in active use (so perhaps my options are greater than if I wished to keep it deployed). As the other messages in that thread show, I think I've already done the ''obvious'' steps to try to remove the device from the array. Checking things out further, I found that it may be that udev did not completely remove the disk, even though the controller no longer believes that the exported unit exists. (udevadm output is here: http://www.spinics.net/lists/raid/msg41950.html ) So my hypothesis is that if I can somehow force udev to drop the references to the disk completely, perhaps I can remove sdg from the array and start a rebuild with the spare already available. I found these docs for Fedora: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/Fedora/14/html/Storage_Administration_… But of course I can't do step 3, since md is refusing to give up sdg. But sdg is already gone, so I really don't care about outstanding IO, and it's a bit too late to worry about a 100% clean removal. So my questions are, will step 7 actually clean up references to sdg, and how likely is it that doing so would let me remove it from the array? Disabling the shutdown buttons in graphical login screen of CentOS 6.3

Hi, I am not sure if I probably have overlooked some important clue, but I am stuck with a problem with the gdm-greeter in CentOS 6.3 here since three days without finding any suitable solution. The problem: * I have to somehow deactivate the "Suspend", "Restart" and "Shutdown" options in the login screen. * This has to be done in CLI mode, as I have to change this on many machines Tried out solutions: * As far as I could figure out gdm-simple-greeter would be the programm I'd have to tweak. But changing options in /etc/gdm/custom.conf does not change anything (as if this file would be ignored). * Another thing would be to set the /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/disable_restart_buttons option to true through gconftool-2. But this option also seems to be ignored. Several posts on the web point to this being a bug which is fixed in RHEL but not CentOS. * I also tried to limit access to all the poweroff, reboot and halt commands through pam.d so that only root would be allowed to shutdown. This did not work either. * I even tried to rename the /sbin/reboot command (and therefore deactivate all the different links pointing to it). Still clicking the buttons still lead to a shutdown (although at some point it got stuck, but the system was not reachable any more). Additional remarks: * I did also delete /etc/acpi/events/power.conf in order to disable the physical power button on the machine. At least that did work, but the problem still is that normal users can shutdown the machine through the gdm login screen. If anyone has any hints, I would be very glad. And sorry if I overlooked anything, but meanwhile I am getting a bit desperate. I have a spec file that is doing a binary rpm build. This spec file works on centos 5 but fails on centos 6 for file not found. Request help about developing android apps on CentOS

Hi there Firstly I must claim that this is the first time I using a mailing list and I am not familiar with the rules here. As well I am not so good at English too. So here's my apologizes if I'm not able to claim the problem clearly. I'm now using CentOS 6.3 with kernel 2.6.32-279.19.1.el668. Recently I wanna transfer my work from WIndows 8 to Linux. One of my hobbies is developing Android apps(:-)So I am not a prof at all). Everything goes well when I install Eclipse, Android SDK, blahblah. But the worst thing was that I couldn't make ADB connect to my phone. My phone is Huawei C8812 which can be listed by lsusb as Bus 001 Device 003: ID 12d1:1031 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. And I followed the instructions on http://developer.android.com/intl/zh-CN/tools/device.html ,but it seemed not working at all. So I found another page http://www.cnblogs.com/116913829/archive/2012/02/09/2343996.html ,it couldn't help me ,either. Yet I have rebooted and restarted udev for hundreds of times, it just wouldn't show on the list of 'adb devices'.(Yes, I confirmed I turned the 'USB Debugging' on on my phone.) I've just installed LibreOffice 4.0.0.3 on my Centos 5.9 system. the previous version (3.4.x) was working fine. But 4.0.0.3 won't start up. When run from a terminal it prints: no suitable windowing system found, exiting. Is this yet another case of apps moving on beyond compatibility with the older components in C5? Or any hints for making it work? DNS caching is not working on CentOS

Hi All: For whatever reason I can not get dns caching to work on any of my centos boxes. Running Centos 5 and 6. Any thoughts on why these will not run? The services start fine but when telling to perform a dig using itself as the resolver the queries fail (See below). Any help would be appreciated. How to limit upload bandwidth for a KVM guest?

Hello: I am using a CentOS server as a KVM host using bridged networking for the guest servers. I would like to limit the bandwidth available to a guest. I tried using the tc command, but it is only limiting the download speed to the guest. Is there a way to limit the upload speed from the guests? Hi all, Both RHEL 6 and CentOS 6 can be installed from any minor releases DVDs: 6.0, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, etc. And then got continuous upgrade/update with command 'yum -y upgrade' if repos are setup correct. But the repos infrastructure is different between the two. CentOS uses two repos: ..../centos/6/os/... repo and .../centos/6/updates/... The updates/ repo contains ONLY updated RPMs between minor releases. currently the updates/ contains updates after 6.3. and the /centos/6/os/ points to 6.3Base. Question #1: supposed I installed with Centos 6.2 last year, and let's say Centos 6.4 comes out two months later and I have not updated a single package since initial installation until Centos 6.4 comes out (I am way too lazy :) ), then How can I setup my yum config to not miss any updated packages? Should I put all three repos inside yum config? centos-6.2-kickstart-os centos-6-os centos-6-updates or the centos-6.2-kickstart-os is not needed at all -- the centos-6-os and cnetos-6-updates together contains all latest RPMS since 6.0 -- ? The first way may render yum to report warning of 'duplicate RPM group definitions' or similar. Questions #2: I've heard that RHEL 6 uses a different path, they seems to have only one big continuously updated base os/ repository. all the RPMs updated since 6.0 (include RPMs at the published day of RHEL 6.0) are contained in the repo. So only the one repo is in need to upgrade systems at any time. Is this true? and if so, any benefits go with it? Thanks. --Robinson

Performance issue

Hi, I suspect a CPU bottleneck in one of our PostgreSQL servers but not sure how to confirm the suspect. It's a DELL Box running CentOS 5.4 with 64GB RAM and 16 XEON E7430 2.13 GHz processors. vmstat r column "run queue" usually indicates values higher than 2 and less than 5 but "Load Average" values from top, sar -q and other commands show always values less than 1. Hi, I'm probably doing something wrong or misunderstanding how this is supposed to work. I have written this ".iso" image to a DVD and booted from it. I then selected the first install option from the menu. I get some prompts and then I'm asked to specify where the media is. I assumed (there's that word) that I should just hit enter, thereby selecting the "from DVD" option. I got a message about not being able to find the install materials? Is this what the install process is looking for? Shouldn't it be looking in the network? Can anyone see what I'm doing wrong? Thanks, George...

rpmbuild for different architecture [OT?]

As far as I can tell, the rpm-list went defunct circa 2008 so I'm asking here. No doubt someone will let me know if this is not OK. I'm trying to build an RPM on a CentOS VM targeted to run on an ARM architecture machine. I have a test program, prime, that I cross compiled on my VM and when I copy it onto my target machine it runs correctly. Now I want to package it in an RPM. On my target machine, I run $ uname -m armv71 so on the VM I wrote my spec file and ran $ rpmbuild -ba --target armv71 prime.spec ... processing files: prime-1.0-1.armv71 unknown, 0: Warning using regular magic file '/etc/magic' Requires(rpmlib): rpmlib(payloadFilesHavePrefix) <= 4.0-1 rpmlib(CompressedFileNames) <= 3.0.4-1 ... Wrote /home/steve/rpmbuild/RPMS/armv71/prime-1.0-1.armv71.rpm ... So it seems that some parts of rpm realize that I've cross compiled and some parts don't. Any ideas on how to get rid of these warning messages? I tried putting 'Autoreq: 0' in the spec file but that didn't help. A second problem is that when I go to install the rpm on the target machine, I get an error saying that the architecture doesn't match. I had to use --ignorarch to get it to install. What does rpm use to determine what the architecture is if not uname? With the --ignorearch option, the RPM installs and the program runs as expected. Thanks, Steve

Virtualisation, guests cached memory and density

Hello, We all know linux distros will use most of the free memory available for caching stuff, I/O buffers etc (hence sites like linuxatemyram.com) In many virt scenarios we have some sort of memory deduplication mechanisms, such as KSM on KVM (don't know how it's called in Vmware). My situation is one where I need to cram up as many virtual machines as I can on a single hypervisor and I believe KSM does not work for the memory used as cache/buffers. How could I work around this? Any other pointers for achieving higher density welcome (don't suggest container technology please). -- Sent from the Delta quadrant using Borg technology! I know y'all have been waiting with baited breath to hear the latest: the group that handles it has agreed that one of the pair is bad. When using CentOS6/Gnome any audio playback will pause if I switch to other virtual terminals - and resume when I switch back to X Does anyone know if it is possible to configure pulseaudio (or some other means?) to allow audio to continue playing when switching virtual terminals? OT - odd behavior of Cisco switch

Ww just had our switch replaced with a pair of 3750G's, old and new all have 48 ports, so we now have some open ports.... Anyway, my manager was looking at issues yesterday, and discovered that for a while, off and on, from several systems on the new switches, he could see traffic between *other* servers and systems elsewhere in the building... which, of course, shouldn't be possible with a switch. He tells me that some switches, if they were overwhelmed with traffic, would give up and go into hub mode, but he's under the impression that was written out of the firmware years ago, while these are new switches. Anyone run into this? mark
