Dell firmware repository - out of date firmware?

Hi All. I am using dell firmware repository (http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php/Repository/OMSA) To update all firmware on my Dell PowerEdge R310 I use: yum install $(bootstrap_firmware) update_firmware --yes and perform reboot. Then the firmware for my PERC H200 RAID controller is "up to date" with repository. When I make: /opt/dell/srvadmin/bin/omreport storage controller I get: ... Firmware Version : 07.03.05.00 ... Driver Version : 05.101.00.02 Minimum Required Driver Version : 07.00.01.00-1 ... So my driver is actually out of date. On page: https://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/555/DriverDetails/Product/powere… I see that SAS-RAID_Firmware_NX9T4_LN32_07.03.05.00_A08.BIN for RHEL is available. It has a higher driver version than required 07.00.01.00-1 so a manual download and install should be ok in this case. Is the dell hardware repo serving old versions of firmware/drivers? Gluster - data migration.

Hi All. I have two servers ("master" and "slave") with a replicated gluster volume. Recently I've had a problem with slave and gluster does not work on it now. So I would like to: - stop and remove current volume on master (on slave it is not accessible); - stop gluster software on master (already stopped on slave); - remove gluster software on master and slave (previous administrator used own built rpms, I would like to use http://download.gluster.org/pub/gluster/glusterfs/3.3/3.3.1/EPEL.repo/) - clean old information: setfattr -x trusted.glusterfs.volume-id /gluster setfattr -x trusted.gfid /gluster rm -rf /gluster/.glusterfs - rsync data from master to slave; - start gluster and create a volume with data in rsynced /gluster directory. Gluster 3.3 - good to use?

Hi All. I want to use mentioned version of glusterfs in a simple master/slave setup (production servers). Two nodes have a replicated volume and the both mount it using glusterfs. What are your experiences with gluster 3.3? Is it stable? Have you had any serious problems? I do not have much experience with gluster and would like to avoid problems if possible. Traffic shaping problem

Hi all, I tried last week to do traffic shaping on a production system, object of the exercise was simply to throttle the outgoing traffic. tc qdisc add dev eth4 root tbf rate 300mbit burst 300kb latency 50ms But the server became rather instable, crashing repeatedly without anything in the logs. Can anybody spot glaring mistakes in the tc command above, or tell me what I should have done instead? with kind regards, Bent Terp

If one becomes expert at RPM package building on RHEL/CentOS then how exactly does that expertise translate from RHEL into say Debian; or BSD; or OSX; or MS-Windows? It does not. On the other hand, any non-native language extension released as a RubyGem and pushed to rubygems.org is instantly available on every platform running a comparable version of Ruby. Further, with rubygems one has version control at the extension level with support for concurrent versions built in. Compare that with rpm where one has exactly one choice of a given package for the entire host. The problem with system packagers like rpm from a Ruby developers standpoint is that frequently developers are packaging language components that are extracted from a larger application and not the application itself. This is essentially how Ruby on Rails came to be released. In such cases a system level application package management system is simultaneously too large and too small for Ruby gems. It is too big in that it requires too much overhead to get it to work at all. It is too small because it only handles one Linus distribution and does nothing at all for any non-linux OS. One must think in terms of plugins when considering RubyGems. Firefox 10 ESR is packaged for CentOS as an rpm but most of the addons that make FF valuable to me are plugins obtained directly by FF from the Mozilla repository or from trusted third parties. These addons are not provided as rpms from RH and never will be. RubyGems serve much the same purpose as FF addons and they are implemented in a similar fashion; an extension belongs to the application and not to the system. As for not getting 'it' right, whatever 'it' is, Ruby is not a single implementation. The baseline is the MRI but there exists several alternative implementations including one written in Java. 2way authentication for SSH?

Hi, Does anyone know of a stable / working "2way authentication" system for SSH, and even web authentication services? Most of the banks in South Africa have a system that, when you want to make a payment, they send you an SMS and you need to verify the action with a secret code which was SMS'd to you. gmail also has this. Does anyone know of a "universal" plugin / application that can be used with SSH and even websites like Wordpress / Joolma / Webmin / etc? Anyone familiar with pymol? We're getting an error I find references to from a few years ago when we try to run remotely on a headless server. I can run it fine on my machine (CentOS 6.3, NVidia video), and on another person's workstation remotely, with other make video, but the server's got a Matrox - which shouldn't matter, since I'm running this after ssh -Y. pymol yum installed fine, no problems. I found, and did a export LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1, which allowed glxgears to work, albeit slowly and unevenly, but pymol always gives me freeglut (pymol): ERROR: Internal error <FBConfig with necessary capabilities not found> in function fgOpenWindow X Error of failed request: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter) Major opcode of failed request: 4 (X_DestroyWindow) Resource id in failed request: 0x0 Serial number of failed request: 24 Current serial number in output stream: 27 PyMOL: abrupt program termination. I read that this is two errors, not one, but other than the environment variable, can't find any other fix. Anyone? mark

Is there a repository with tools/firmware updates for IBM servers for Linux/RHEL/CentOS? I've googled around but with no luck. Does anyone know of a repository that's *trustworthy* (gotta worry 'bout malware) with newer ruby rpm's than RHEL has? OT: the more I deal with ruby, the less I like it. Someone here was ready to move to a newer version, and from the ruby.org website, they're apparently actively hostile to all RH-related distros, even though we're the most common in North America. They've got a how to do it from debian and arch, how to use their own installer, and, oh, yes, they say a lot of their community feels you should build from source. Sorry, that's not my idea of a stable language that I'd ever recommend to someone.... mark

Java app not observing ACLs

Hello, I have inherited a Java app, available as a jar, which has been moved from an HPUX server as is. [This app simply downloads a data file from an ftp server, processes its data and creates graph files.] It works fine on a CentOS 5 x86_64 machine with: jre-7u9-linux-x64.rpm but I've noticed it does not respect Linux ACLs. When run by a user who has access to a directory (where the app creates a file) only via ACLs (and not by basic user/group permissions), then I get "permission denied" issues. I've googled for the problem but have not been able to find references. Is anyone aware of such behavior and can suggest a solution? Thanks, Nick

As the man says, Ruby is open source. If you have an itch then scratch it yourself. I had much the same issue with Ruby albeit on three platforms simultaneously, MS-Win, Apple-OSX and RHEL-Linux. In the end I went with Ruby Version Manager to save my sanity. However, RVM is a very intrusive bit of environment scripting and so I later switched to RBENV. That is a little lighter but I was still not satisfied with the amount of background work required to get Rails deployments to work with RVM/RBENV on different hosts. For development either RVM or RBENV is almost certainly the way to go for non-sysadmins. For deployments I am not so sure. I ended up building my own rpm packages using rpmdev and mock. After avoiding the issue for years I discovered that rolling your own rpms for Ruby is pretty simple, once you get a working spec file (which I eventually discovered and stole). intel_iommu=on => No root device found

Hi all, for some reaseon, my message wasn't published. Second try, this time without the giant attachment. I have an Intel server (SR2600URBRPR) in front of me. The disks in my server are connected via PCI card (Adaptec RAID 3405). Now I would like to passthrough a PCI-E graphics card to a KVM guest. As this requires Intel VT-d, I configured the following options in the BIOS: Intel VT for Directed I/O [Enabled] Interrupt Remapping [Enabled] Coherency Support [Disabled] ATS Support [Enabled] Pass-through DMA Support [Enabled] Everything works so far, but when I add intel_iommu=on to the kernel line of my grub.conf, Dracut gives my a kernel panic while booting. I added "rdshell" to the command line and extracted the boot messages via dmesg (http://nilscaspar.ch/centos-dmesg.log) I think the main problem is this: dracut Warning: No root device "block:/dev/disk/by-uuid/280234d1-dff5-4e04-b1ef-93d54cdcd825" found But I doesn't make sense to me... On my 'older' systems that include Centos 5.5 and Fedora 12, vncserver is running on ports 580n where n is defined by userid in the /etc/sysconfig/vncserver I just spent a bit of time getting it working on my new Centos 6.3 server and found it listening on ports 590n. When did the change occur? And guess I should test out where it is on Fedora 17...

weird issue with qemu-kvm network...

Hello CentOS mailinglist I am running CentOS 6.3 with qemu-kvm and libvirt. I was experimenting with bridged VM networking. Usually the VMs run over the network device virbr0. So i created a new bridge with brctl and added my eth0 to that bridge. Not touching virbr0 or it's configuration at all. Then i edited the configuration xml from my VM with 'virsh edit vmname'. After that i decided to restart my server, basically just to 'reset' my network. I know, that's not necessary. But it's easier than risking connection loss and having to get physical access to the server ;) After the restart my virbr0 network device was gone! cat /var/log/dmesg | grep virbr0 returned nothing. cat /var/log/messages | grep virbr0 brought up nothing aswell. I tried to reinstall all relevant packages with yum reinstall qemu-kvm python-virtinst virt-top virt-viewer libvirt libvirt-client libvirt-python qemu-kvm-tools But with no success :( Does anyone have an idea how to recreate the default virbr0? Is it doable via virsh? I don't have a DE installed on this server, so no virtual-manager. I am willing to go that far if it's worth it though.

Hello there! I was running skype 4.1.0.20 on my 64-bit laptop for weeks (installed in /opt, from an official skype binary archive, plus few 32-bit stuff to get it working), when suddenly it stopped working, no way to start it: $ skype Fatal: QWidget: Must construct a QApplication before a QPaintDevice Aborted A quick search on the Internet brought some possible solution, basically configuring prelink to skip skype binary, uninstall skype, reinstall it. I was doubtful about uninstall/reinstall step since I didn't install it using a RPM but from a binary archive. Anyway I did it, restarted even the computer. No way to start skype. For now I'm stuck w/ an former staticQT 4.0.0.8 version of skype, which has no support for MSN accounts. Please note that I'm not using skype+msn because I want, but because I need to (@work). Did anybody ever solve this issue or has a clue about how to do it? Regards, -- wwp

How does one use X forwarding properly? I got a server running CentOS 6.3 at runlevel 3 (no DE installed) I try to access virt-manager via x-forwarding from another CentOS 6.3 client in my network (runlevel 5 with default gnome) on The server i changed my sshd_config: X11Forwarding yes i installed xauth on both of the machines. Anything else there is to do? When i try to: ssh -X root@server virt-manager I still get the following error message: RuntimeError: could not open display Which is in fact a message i get with every graphical programm i try to run through that. So I guess it's an error in my ssh configuration. Any tips?

I've found http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php/Firmware-tools_announcement and https://linux.dell.com/repo/community/ It is an unofficial, community supported repository. What are your experiences: should I perform firmware updates the traditional way by downloading *.bin packages from Dell and run them manually or should I use this repo? How to extract one file from rpm using yum?

I want to get the original version of /etc/clamd.d/amavis.conf from the amavisd-new rpm to get the defaults to submit a bug report. I could not figure out how to do this, so I did a reinstall, but it did not replace this file (whatprovides says it comes from this rpm). Is there a way to extract just the one file, and better yet, place it elsewhere than its regular destination? thanks

I have java-1.7.0-openjdk installed on a CentOS-6.3 x86_64 system. On my desktop I have a jar file containing a calculator program which runs fine on CentOS-5 and on MS-Windows machines. On the CentOS-6 system when I right-click on the jar file and say open with java nothing apparently happens. When I double-click on it then I see a file browser window offering to extract the contents but there are no contents visible, only an empty / directory. If I go to the desktop in a terminal session and type java superbcalc.jar then I see this message: "Could not find or load main class superbcalc.jar" There is no CLASSPATH environment variable set by the system. If I provide one and include the current directory '.' I get the same error. Centos 6.3 - which repos to use?

I've just installed v6.3 as a desktop (from Centos-6.3-i386-LiveCD.iso) and to get the hang of the Centos approach and then hope to move on to a server. I've been using linux *buntu for 5 years. Hope i don't sound like a nit but i've got a little confused with the repos. Hoping someone would be kind enough just to clarify. This installation is for stability whilst installing the latest versions available. a] What happens if i select these? I assume that Centos6 is correct so why these? In software sources i have checked; Centos6-base, Centos6-extras, Centos6-updates unchecked; Centos6-contrib, Centos6-media, Centos6-plus i did check these three and media wouldn't, and plus wanted to suggest installation kernel 2.6 [gulp]. Each unchecked without installing. Then we also have the same for 6.0, 6.1, 6.2? b] So which repos to use as i'm unsure where apps are i want to use like efax (ok that's in), yumex, pyrenamer, llgal, abiword. at present i'm not sure which repos to use other than the one's i've mentioned. I then started to look at the repos http://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalResources/Repositories Centos extras and plus -- are these the same as above? CS/GFS, Centos testing, Fast track, debuginfo, contrib, CR - would seem not applicable to me. 3rd party repos rpmforge (DAG), and EPEL seem likely other repos seem likely to replace core packages which wouldn't be applicable. Google RPM gets a "use with care". I used the google browser on *buntu from their website with no problems so i was wondering what the problem would be and whether to use this repoo or the website. The fact that a maintainer has made this repo suggests a reason rather than just convenience. c] Could one just use pkgs.org to install from? My google "centos abiword" threw up yet another repo 'puias' and this has the latest Abiword version 2.8.6. http://pkgs.org/centos-6-rhel-6/puias-i386/abiword-2.8.6-3.puias6.i686.rpm.… I could just install from pkgs.org/centos-6 it would seem? Point is the repos are maintained by an expert rather than folk just downloading. I was then confused further by this http://miles.isb.bj.edu.cn/2012/03/09/how-to-install-abiword-on-centos-6-x6… One needs to add epal and rpmforge just for abiword? ACL/permissions question

Hello listmates, If I have a regular, ACL-capable filesystem on Linux (say, ext4 or xfs) is there a way for me to establish the following: 1) There is a directory, say, /home/joe . It is owned by user joe . No one but joe (and root, of course) can read or write anything in this directory. 2) No one can change permissions on that directory, not even joe. In other words, in joe all of a sudden joe decided to open his directory up to the world (or the group he is a member of) by doing something akin to: chmod 777 /home/joe he would not succeed. I should probably find either the amavis or clam list(s) and take this there? Anyway, I have totally rebuilt my machine with clean installs. Anything Like Solaris' Live Upgrade?

Does anyone know of any sort of Linux utility that does something like what Solaris' Live Upgrade (http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19455-01/806-7933/index.html) does? Installing RHEL On Laptop.....

Not sure if this is the right place to come to, but I don't have "RHN" support.....I'm hoping someone can help me out here. I have downloaded the RHEL .ios file and burned it to DVD/CD, my laptop is primed to Boot From CD/ROM Drive, I start the installation using the semi-graphical interface, and the first few options are a breeze, then it gets to identifying the CD drive and it asks me which driver I want to use....there's only a list of about 10 and NONE of them work, when I select it, it searches for a minute, then it goes back to the "Install Your CD Drive" screen. Is there some way to skip this part? or to have the install disc automatically find this info? Did I download the wrong version of RHEL? (supposedly it's free...but I do not know this for sure....maybe there's a "different" version than the one with the paid subscription and support?) Any help someone can give would be appreciated....I've included the output of my lshw in the hopes that someone can point me to the file that I need to get past this point? Cheers! Mail notification in panel/system tray on CentOS 6

Hi. Does anyone know of a way to add a "new mail" notification icon to the panel/system tray under CentOS 6? On CentOS 5, I used the "mail-notification" software package provided by the Fedora "EPEL" distribution, but this is gone from the version 6 repository, and the one from version 5 won't install just like that due to dependency issues. "Can't install ... as no transaction" from PackageKit (CentOS 6)

Hello again, Does anyone have any idea what the following message in the package installer - gpk-install-local-file - is supposed to mean? Can't install /tmp/mail-notification-4.0-3.el5.x86_64.rpm as no transaction (Under "More details" in the "Local install failed" popup.) This is something I got while trying to set up a "mail notification" icon - refer to my other recent post. I happen to know what (part of) the problem is - the package has dependencies that can't be resolved, but why doesn't the message just say so? And what's the meaning of a "transaction" anyway? Mind you, I believe I understand the word perfectly well, but in the above sentence it still makes no sense to me... To reproduce this, you may try (on a CentOS 6) system: 1. In a web browser, go to http://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/5/x86_64/repoview/mail-notification.ht… or http://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/5/i386/repoview/mail-notification.html depending on your architecture. 2. Click on the rpm link. 3. Select "Open with"->"Package Installer (default)". 4. Answer "Install" when asked if you want to install the file (after it's downloaded.) 5. Click "More details" when the error popup appears. I don't know if this file comes from clam or amavis-new, but.... It contains the comment and command: # Run as a selected user (clamd must be started by root) User amavis Is this conf file for clam or amavis? As in /etc/clamd.conf we have: # Run as another user (clamd must be started by root for this option to work) # Default: don't drop privileges User clam # Initialize supplementary group access (clamd must be started by root). # Default: no AllowSupplementaryGroups yes Then in /etc/amavisd.conf (the real? conf file for amavis-new) in the Clamav section are comments: # # Note: run clamd under the same user as amavisd, or run it under its own # # uid such as clamav, add user clamav to the amavis group, and then add # # AllowSupplementaryGroups to clamd.conf; So is clam running under its user or amavis? Why is this last comment pointing to the 'old' clamav userid?

Alias for sending email messages from root

I have run into what can only be described as a farce but one that is outside my control and which I need fixed. I am informed that my cell phone service provider, Bell Canada, will not allow any email messages from a user id 'root' to pass through their email to sms text gateway. Now, I send alerts out from cron and other system monitoring software and these all go out as root(a)host.domain.tld. Is there any way to configure the outgoing address to be something else? pid location from clamav on Centos 6.3

I was getting nowhere with my clamav permissions problem, so I blew away my test system and did a total rebuild. I am now up to the part right after the install of amavis-new, clamav, clamav-devel, and clamd all from the epel.repo (spamassassin, also installed at the same time comes from the base repo). Prior to this, I rebuild the system from my kickstart file, and did the postfix, postfixadmin, mysql, dovecot, and roundcube setups all from instructions and scripts that I have put together over the past number of weeks, and this part went right through with no apparent problems. So now I am carefully checking out clamav before I make any config changes and right away I notice discrepencies with where clamd.pid is located. In /etc/clamd.conf it is placed in /var/run/clamav/clamd.pid In /etc/clamd.d/amavisd.conf it is placed in /var/run/amavisd/clamd.pid /etc/amavisd/amaviisd.conf does not reference the clamd.pid, only the .sock and warns you to point it to the same place as in /etc/clamd.conf. But what gives with the pid file locations? I might think that in a base install the pid file would be pointed to the same place? Obviously, I have figured out I really need to make these two enteries the same, but still. :(

HI all, I have configured a CentOS 6.3 x86_64 as a NFSv4 server and I am suffering errors like this: perl[7889]: segfault at a80 ip 00007fb870227ea2 sp 00007fff2fecda30 error 4 in libperl.so[7fb870193000+162000] The symptoms are the same as described in this thread: http://serverfault.com/questions/235059/vfs-file-max-limit-1231582-reached Can anyone confirm that is a bug when NFSv4 is used? permission problems with avamis and Centos 6.3

I am trying to follow: http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Amavisd Which seems to really be written for Centos 5, with just some selinux references for Centos 6. There are real problems here for Centos 6 with the userids section. It gives the following command and result: cat /etc/passwd | grep "amavis\|clamav" clamav:x:101:102:Clam Anti Virus Checker:/var/clamav:/sbin/nologin amavis:x:102:103:Amavis email scan user:/var/amavis:/bin/sh But my Centos 6.3 has: clam:x:494:490:Clam Anti Virus Checker:/var/lib/clamav:/sbin/nologin amavis:x:493:489::/var/spool/amavisd:/sbin/nologin Note the difference in userid clam instead of clamav. So this causes problems with the group recommendation: In addition, the clamav user should automatically have been added to the amavis group: # groups clamav clamav : clamav amavis If not, you can manually add clamav to the amavis group: gpasswd -a clamav amavis so I did: gpasswd -a clam amavis So far, it seems just changing what userid is now used by clamav... But in testing for spam I see the following in /var/log/maillog Jan 23 15:56:17 test1 amavis[25669]: (25669-01) (!)run_av (ClamAV-clamd) FAILED - unexpected , output="/var/spool/amavisd/tmp/amavis-20130123T155617-25669/parts: lstat() failed: Permission denied. ERROR\n" I checked this directory tree and all along the tree the permissions are to amavis:amavis So where is my permission problem?

Has anyone managed to get FF 18.0 to work on Centos 5.8? I've been hacking at it, placing a stack of .so files (from Centos 6) into a private directory, then using LD_LIBRARY_PATH to point the system to (in a shellscript that subsequently invokes ff 18) but so far I've not managed to find the right combination. I've moved over libstdc++, all or nearly all the .so files from glib2 and glibc packages. now I"m getting: ./firefox: symbol lookup error: ./libstdc++.so.6: undefined symbol: _ZNSt7num_getIcSt19istreambuf_iteratorIcSt11char_traitsIcEEE2idE, version GLIBCXX_3.4 and dunno either what I've done wrong, or what other things need to be brought over. From what i could see last evening it seems as good as apt/synaptic. Although one could say that's not much good; synaptic doesn't completely remove all associated files, neither does apt's --purge option, although the more recent --autoremove does. But Debian's default package manager aptitude which few know how to use as they don't print off and read the 1 ins thick manual that comes with it - aptitude is the best package manager of all. There was only dependency problems with rpm and debian's dpkg - the apps didn't cope with it. Yum may do it now but it is also very slow by comparison with Aptitude. I think you've been unfairly critical tbh. From what i can deduce neither Debian or Redhat systems come close to the speed of slackware and i don't know why yet. james

How to configure display on CentOS 6?

How exactly are you supposed to configure the display (i.e. set up X11) on a CentOS 6 system? I mean, in the past, there was system-config-display, but that's not supported any more. There is gnome-display-properties/System->Preferences->Display, but that seems to rely completely on auto-detection of the graphics card and monitors. What if this fails? Surely there should be a way to specify everything by hand? Mail notification in panel/system tray on CentOS 6

Hi. Does anyone know of a way to add a "new mail" notification icon to the panel/system tray under CentOS 6? On CentOS 5, I used the "mail-notification" software package provided by the Fedora "EPEL" distribution, but this is gone from the version 6 repository, and the one from version 5 won't install just like that due to dependency issues. Hi I have (actaully on a number of machines) various Adaptec card installed, yet lsmod shows "dmraid" loaded? How come? I thought that dmraid is software raid? Is this part of the booting and if so How do I tell mkinitrd NOT to make it part of the bootup process? Software Updater issue

Hey All, Heads up! For some reason the Software Updater thought it would be interesting for me if it upgraded my nvidia 304 driver with the nvidia 310.32-1 driver. That would be nice if the 310 driver supported my crusty old GS 7600 but it doesn't. I had to run two yum downgrade sessions to get it back to working again. First downgrade brought me 310.19-2, which doesn't support my video card, in place of 310.32. The second downgrade restored the 304 driver. I'm not sure about this but that seems like a bug when it thinks that the 310 driver package is an upgrade for the 304 driver package. Hello everyone, I am new to this group so please forgive me if this question has been already asked. With four identical hard drives, I want to setup RAID 5 + 1 hot spare by a fresh CentOS (6.3) installation. I have read this article ( http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/Deployment_Guide-en-US/s1-raid-config.html) and watched this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qm3MkuTfDLw) now I have the basic ideas. However, due to my limited experience and knowledge on this area, I am still confused. To make things easier, I only need a swap and a `/' partition. Could you give me any hint on this? Hello all, The question is not necessarily CentOS-specific - but there are lots of bright people on here, and - quite possibly - the final implementation will be on CentOS hence I figured I'd ask it here. Here is the situation. I need to configure a Linux-based network load balancer (NLB) solution. The idea is this. Let us say I have a public facing load balancer machine with an public IP of, say, 50.50.50.50. It is to receive the traffic (let's say, HTTP traffic) and then route it to two private HTTP servers, let's say, 192.168.10.10 and 192.168.10.11. It has to have persistence - i.e., be state- and session-aware. If for whatever reason one of the servers goes down the remaining pool shares all the traffic in some fashion (be it eound robin, saturation based, whatever). We have tried Vyatta ( http://vyatta.org/ ) and ZeroShell ( http://www.zeroshell.org/ ) and both are very good but their NLB seems to be externally facing (i.e., you have several internet connections and are trying to divide your traffic between them). What we need is an "internally facing" one, if I may say so. Any advice on what may help us would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Boris.

cronjob not running

i did this from the console crontab -e then i inserted this in my vi editor 10 * * * * curl http://mysite.com/test.php then i exited vi then i did crontab -l and the cron job was listed then i did /sbin/service crond start and i waited for 10 mins to get a message echo to my console. the message is displayed in my browser when the php script(http://mysite.com/test.php) is loaded via my browser. The message is also shown on my console when d curl command is run direct from the console. the problem is getting the message from the cronjob. what could be wrong ? could it be that the job is not well setup ? note , i logged in as root user. please help regards kunle

clock sync/drift

Hi, We have a little over 100 servers, almost all running CentOS 5.7. Virtually all are Dell servers, generally a mix of 1950s, R610s, and R410s. We use NTP and/or PTP to sync their clocks. One phenomenon we've noticed is that (1) on reboot, the clocks are all greatly out of sync, and (2) if the PTP or NTP process is stopped, the clocks start drifting very quickly. If it was isolated to one or two servers, I'd dismiss the issue. I also had this problem under CentOS 4. I suspect something is mis-configured, because I can't imagine the hardware clock on ALL these servers is *that* bad. Anyone else dealt with anything similar? Thanks! Matt

I have a KVM setup. Host is 6.3. I have a bridged client running 5.9 Since upgrading to 5.9 I noticed that ntpd is being restarted every 12 hours. totem fails to open .wmv file

Hey All, Totem has stopped playing .wmv files recently. I don't know exactly when this happened, but I know I've played .wmv files not too very long ago. I've got 372 .wmv files all of which I've played at one time. When I try to launch any one of the .wmv files from file manager totem pops up but the controls are not functional. [OT] how to specify dimensions a a Java Popup

How, if at all, does one specify the size of a Java Popup? setSize on the contents Component does not get the job done regardless of when applied. I keep getting the same small square, serveral pixels on an edge. Is this documented somewhere? I've been trying to use docs.oracle.com, but nothing I've found answers the question. I truly hate the poke it and see what it does method of finding out what something is supposed to do. openscad available?

Does anyone know if there is a repo that has openscad for CentOS? rpmfind.net doesn't turn up anything. The openscad wiki page says, "As of 2013, prebuilt OpenSCAD packages are available on many recent Linux and BSD distributions, including Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch, and NetBSD. Check your system's package manager for details." I though that maybe CentOS might have one too. I'll try building it from source if not, but I've seldom had success with that course of action. my nightly webalizer runs have gone from about 2 hours to over 8 hours. this change happened sometime after november. webalizer hasn't changed in years, but bind was updated in january, so i am thinking that is the likely culprit. has anyone else noticed a similar slowdown? i am going to dig through my logs to see if i can spot the day that things slowed down.

heads up on silent change in recent samba3x update

i guess that upstream doesn't consider the samba3x packages should be treated the same way as other packages, but i just wanted to warn folks that the recent samba3x update changed a default setting. if you rely on hostnames in a hosts allow/deny clause (and possibly elsewhere), things won't work until you set 'hostname lookups=yes'. given that it jumped from 3.5 to 3.6, there may be other changes as well.

Custom locale, LC_TYPE and urxvt

I have a custom locale in use on our system. Consequently, Xlib does not recognize the default environment setting for LC_TYPE. To get an urxvt window opened without encountering the locale error message I am therefore constrained to use some variant of the following: LC_TYPE=en_US.UTF-8 urxvt& I would like to set LC_TYPE to a different value than LANG. However, based on experiment it seems that the only locale setting in /etc/sysconfig/i18n that CentOS-6.3 responds to is LANG. I have looked at /etc/profile.d/lang.sh but my knowledge of terminal settings and system variables is insufficient to make much sense out of it. if [ -n "$LANG" ]; then saved_lang="$LANG" [ -f "$HOME/.i18n" ] && . One might infer from this treatment that this is because lang.sh expects that if $LANG is set then /etc/sysconfig/i18n has already been processed. Assuming that /etc/sysconfig/i18n is found then it processes the following statement: if [ "$sourced" = 1 ]; then [ -n "$LANG" ] && export LANG || unset LANG . . . Evidently /etc/profile.d/lang.sh only gets processed by /etc/bashrc if I am NOT in a login shell. The question then is: when does /etc/profile.d/lang.sh get processed? Well, numerous places it seems: /etc/csh.login /etc/profile /etc/rc.d/init.d/rpcbind /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/K95firstboot /etc/rc.d/rc /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc-common Yet, despite all these calls to /etc/profile.d/lang.sh, whenever I open a new session in gnome-terminal LC_LANG is never set but $LANG is. If However, I do . /etc/profile.d/lang.sh in that window session, then LC_TYPE becomes set as I desire. Either something is setting LANG and ignoring LC_TYPE in /etc/sysconfig/i18n before lang.sh or something is unsetting everything other than $LANG after lang.sh is processed. Serial console

I am trying to get a CentOS 6.3 serial console to work with IPMI SOL. I think I have everything working but maybe the wrong baud rate on the getty: $ ipmitool -I lanplus -U root -H 10.0.0.14 sol activate Password: [SOL Session operational. Use ~? for help] �� 10.0.0.14 is the DRAC IP address of the CentOS 6.3 box. It accepts the password and connects me to the console but then when I type I get those funny characters. Somehow an agetty is already being run: root 46110 1 0 16:13 ttyS1 00:00:00 /sbin/agetty /dev/ttyS1 19200 vt100-nav Is udev starting this up for me somehow? It says 19200 when everything I have read says it should be 115200. How do I change this? Some docs say I should create my own /etc/init/serial-ttyS1.conf containing: # For IPMI serial console # ttyS1 - agetty # # This service maintains a agetty on ttyS1. stop on runlevel [S016] start on runlevel [23] respawn exec agetty -h -L -w /dev/ttyS1 115200 vt102 but when I do that I end up with two gettys, presumably fighting over the serial port, and the original is apparently holding onto it because I still can't connect and get a login prompt. # ps -ef |grep agetty root 46110 1 0 16:13 ttyS1 00:00:00 /sbin/agetty /dev/ttyS1 19200 vt100-nav root 46118 1 0 16:13 ? 00:00:00 agetty -h -L -w /dev/ttyS1 115200 vt102 What is the right way to set this up? This is not true if source and dest are local: then the rsync algo is not used, and if the mod time is changed on the source the whole file will be copied. so if you're rsyncing locally, eg to a usb drive, you need --size-only as I said. Now if one of the source or dest is remote I agree with you, but this is not alwayss the case. I don't recall whether the OP expressed whether that was the case or not, though I think he mentioned wanting to backup family pictures, so it might very well be to a usb HD. Inany case I definitely know you mentioned testing things locally. Which I did, and you didn't... being wrong is ok, but you should really work on that attitude of yours.

Sluggish server with big array

Hi! I am experiencing strange behavior with my new CentOS 6.3 installation (system up to date). I have a big 11 TB EXT4 array mounted on /home/data. The server is a Tyan 2U (TA26-B3992-E) with Dual Opteron 2216, one cpu has 4 Gigs RAM and the other has 8 Gigs (so 12 Gigs total). The server uses 8 x Seagate 2TB SAS hard disks (7200 RPM) and all the disks are grouped together to form 1 x 500 Gigs RAID 6 array (for CentOS) and 1 x 11 TB RAID 6 for data storage (mounted on /home/data). I have a couple of samba shares from the 11 TB array (all of them are on the 11TB array). The strange behavior is that if i "ls -al /home/data", i have to wait 7-8 seconds to see the output. If i do a simple ls, output is instantaneous. I see about the same delay when i access the samba shares from the server (related ?). I don't know where to start with this! See man rsync: Rsync finds files that need to be transferred using a “quick check” algorithm (by default) that looks for files that have changed in size or in last-modified time. and yes I've tested this before posting ;-) to avoid this you need to use --size-only .

Large yum update

Hi, On about 8am GMT Jan 18, my server reported an unusually large number of yum updates available. I think this is due to the release of CentOS 5.9: http://article.gmane.org/gmane.linux.centos.announce/7203 However, I just wanted to be a little paranoid, since this is unusual for my normal yum update reports (over 100 updates compared to a couple a week). Can someone confirm my suspicion, or is it possible I have a security issue on my hands? Thank you!!!!

What does this error mean? Updating : gtk2 35/178 g_module_open() failed for /usr/lib64/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/loaders/libpixbufloader-png.so: /usr/local/lib/libpng12.so.0: undefined symbol: inflateReset /usr/bin/gtk-query-immodules-2.0-64: /usr/local/lib/libpng12.so.0: no version information available (required by /usr/lib64/libcairo.so.2) Do I really need gtk2 running on a server anyway?

I get emails with .docx attachment, and t-bird has no idea what to do with them (and doesn't even offer me a choice)."Change your preferences...
