8.2.2004 Latest yum update renders machine unbootable

I am running an Intel x64 machine using UEFI to boot an SSD. Installing the latest yum update which includes grub2 and kernel 4.18.0-193.14.2.el8_2.x86_64 renders the machine unbootable, blank screen where grub should be, no error messages, just hangs. After some hours I managed to modify another bootable partition (containing older software) and boot it from there. After that, I found out it is a known problem. The main point of this message is to make people aware of the problem and suggest admins don't run 'yum update' until they understand the problem and have a fix at hand. I have a docker image based off centos:7 with java-11-openjdk-devel. It appears that the current java-11-openjdk-devel available in the CentOS 7 Yum repo is 1:11.0.7.10-4.el7_8 11.0.7 is reported to have some high vulnerabilities RHSA-2020:2969 that are fixed in 11.0.8, but 11.0.8 is not available for CentOS 7. 1. Is there a 11.0.8 update for java-11-openjdk-devel available for CentOS 7? 2. Is there a page like Ubuntu's CVE Tracker site where it shows the CVE, the package name, and the status (e.g. https://people.canonical.com/~ubuntu-security/cve/2020/CVE-2020-14578.html) 3. If 2 is no, How can I look up the status of a package that has been released by upstream on CentOS? (e.g. it's been released in Upstream, it's available in CentOS, it's pending backport for CentOS 7)

systemd syslog.target

I've noticed that there are several systemd unit files in CentOS 7 and 8 with the optionAfter=syslog.targetin the [Unit] section, but since systemd version 198 syslog.target has not existed.I deduce from this that "After=syslog.target" is ignored by systemd and can therefore be removed. Is this correct? I am writing some systemd unit files for our own services which previously used init.d scripts, so I want to ensure I'm not causing problems by omitting "After=syslog.target"ChrisSent from Samsung Mobile on O2

UEFI boot blank screen post update

Hi folks, I am able to install workstation successfully on a dedicated SSD w/ GPT partition w/ UEFI boot using the latest `CentOS-8.2.2004-x86_64-dvd1.iso` from a bootable pen drive. The motherboard is ASRock x570 Gaming 4 ( https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/X570%20phantom%20Gaming%204/index.asp) w/ Ryzen 3600, 16G RAM, 1TB SSD in question. However, after login, when I do a DNF update (which is updating the kernel presently) and then do a reboot, I don't see the grub2 screen anymore. I end up on a blank screen. Tried fixing grub2 via recovery method, no luck. Tried this couple of times, i.e, fresh install then dnf update, always ended up with the same result. In my latest reinstall, I did not format the boot and EFI partition, and after it came up post the reinstall, I could see the upgraded kernel entry from the last install in the grub menu. Hey All, My CentOS 8 system will not boot into the new kernel that was part of the update this evening. How do I boot the previous kernel? I can't select it on the boot menu. The only choice I can select, other than the new kernel that dies with a kernel panic, is the rescue kernel. If I try to edit the boot command every time I touch the cursor key the cursor jumps 15 characters. Centos 8: removing font rpms leaves directory and .uuid file behind

remove an unneeded font that was installed during the initial setup: dnf remove thai-scalable ls -a /usr/share/fonts/thai-scalable Not only did the directory survive the removal, but we still have a hidden file named .uuid in the directory (which is probably why it didn't get removed). The directory and .uuid file is an orphan though, since rpm --whatprovides tells me that no rpm owns it. Again, not surprising since we removed the rpm. This happens when removing any of the default fonts like smc, any of the sil-* fonts and so forth. They all leave their directory under /usr/share/fonts and a .uuid file behind. -- Can we uninstall 2020 and install it again? This one has a virus. mysql-connector-odbc i686 package

Hi all, I am looking for a i686 package (32 bit) for mysql-connector-odbc. However, I could locate only the x86-64 version on the repositories. Not much of a DB person but trying to connect to a 64bit MySQL server on remote host. Any suggestions where I can locate the i686 package? Is there a mariadb package that I can use? Thanks.

CentOS user survey results

Over the past 3 or 4 months, we have been running a survey about how you use CentOS. Many thanks to those who participated in this, to help us better understand how we can give you what you need. I've written up the results of the survey here - https://blog.centos.org/2020/07/centos-community-user-survey/ While some of the results were expected - most of you use CentOS in small to medium shops, running services either for work or personal use - there were some eye-opening things in this. To me personally, the volunteerism question shows that a lot of you are looking for places to get involved, and that we haven't done a great job telling you where and how. We'll be working to fix that. For those of you who missed the survey, we intend to do this again, perhaps as often as twice a year, and also provide opportunities to give more feedback beyond the simple 5-minute questionnaire. I do not found any ostnamed application, the closest is hostnamed. Should the tmpfs be mounted differently (without fstab entry)? To get rid of the AVC I could add the corresponding policy "allow init_t httpd_var_run_t:filesystem remount;" but is this not a bit of overkill? Any hints about what the cause is? virt-manager windows guest on CentOS 7

My windows client is using "generic display adapter" and not QXL. So I mount the VirtIO iso, open windows Manager, right click on Generic display display driver and select Update Driver, Browse to my iso, click qxl and there are only three listed. 2k8R2 w7 xp There is Windows 10. I am using that latest stable 1.1.85 iso. how do I get a VIrtio display driver for windows 10 ? Thanks, jerry

Hi all, I'm looking for some comments regarding options related to storage. We have a number of Apache web servers (24) running on (24) Centos 7.x systems, fully patched running a sort of MySQL, Java and PHP applications. All as virtual machines on top of Vmware ESX. When the Apache/MySQL R/W data, Data storage is provided as a single NFS volume mounted across the VMs. That storage space is provided by an aging (and expensive) netapp unit. What we are looking for are ideas of scaling our storage. Shall we continue to add disks to the netapp so we can increase the NFS volume size? Shall we do Gluster? CEPH? Is there something like a storage gateway for Centos? where I can centralize several storage types and present them in a centralized way? NFS, SCSI, FC ? No Cloud solutions. As we cannot go cloud (business rules). All solutions have to be local. Not sure if it makes sense. -- --------------------- Erick Perez ---------------------

Has anyone gotten virtualbox to run on Centos8? I did the install, and it complained about missing elflibs, so I installed those, and the virtualbox install finished without any reported problems. when i try to run virtualbox, it fails with this message: Qt FATAL: This application failed to start because no Qt platform plugin could be initialized. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem. Available platform plugins are: eglfs, linuxfb, minimal, minimalegl, offscreen, vnc, xcb. Aborted (core dumped) I tried doing dnf reinstall vbox stuff, again, no reported problems, but I get the same result. --

USB-serial adapter for CentOS 7

I need to connect an older APS UPS unit to a machine running CentOS 7. Unfortunately the UPS only has a serial port whereas the computer does not. I am aware that there are USB-serial adapters but that the hardware or the drivers might fall short of expectations. Does anyone have positive experience with such an adapter? Or, conversely, would recommend avoid a particular adapter?

Brother HL-L2360DW printing quality

I have the above printer but have not been able to resolve issues with the printing quality in CentOS 7. The test page prints fine but when I print PDF-documents, most recently using Chinese fonts, it is lacking and the pages very hard to read. The settings in the Mate Cups configuration panel are fine and set to 600 dpi, the settings in the printer menu are all OK yet it prints more like maybe 150 or even 75 dpi. Any suggestion what might be wrong?

C8 - KVM on bridge on VLAN on team issues.

As part of my initial KVM host on C8 deployment, I decided to set up some HA features on the new host, specifically NIC teaming. Teaming seems to be bond++ of a sort, so I thought I would at least try it. So here's the scenario: 1.) Server with two gigabit ethernet ports, two Cisco switches. 2.) During install, used the 'Server with GUI' group and added the virtualization packages. 3.) During install, set up team0 to include the two gig-e ports set up active-backup (two switches). 4.) During install, set up three bridges, with the slave devices being VLANs pointed to the team0 subinterfaces (using VLANs 68, 101, and 302; 101 is to be the management bridge for the host, with guests on all three VLANs). So, for instance, bridge101 has a slave that is VLAN101 that points to team0.101 with a VLAN ID of 101. The bridge101 interface has a manual IP address, but bridge68 and bridge302 do not (IPv4 disabled; IPv6 Ignore) 5.) After reboot, the bridge101 interface comes up, and I successfully connect to the host, since the install is 8.1.1911, I ran a 'dnf update' up to 8.2.2004, which went well, then I successfully set up and used cockpit, cockpit-bridge, cockpit-machines, again over the IP address on bridge101. Ok, now that the base connectivity is working: 1.) Connect to the host (traffic on bridge101 over team0.101) using virt-manager on my laptop and install a C8 guest, with the network pointed to bridge302, and a manual IP address. 2.) After reboot of guest, there is no IP connectivity to the guest's gateway on VLAN302. 3.) HOWEVER, the gateway's MAC address shows up in the host's bridge fdb for VLAN302, AND in the arp output for the guest; ALSO, the MAC address for the guest shows on the cisco switch 'show mac-address-table' output. The output of 'ip --br link' looks normal for this configuration, but there's a disconnect somewhere. So, since I see that VLAN101 is passing traffic to the bridge correctly (since the management IP is on that VLAN), I try to set up a guest on VLAN101; no dice, no work, but the management IP still works fine. So, does anyone here have a working setup with KVM guests connecting to bridges using 802.1q VLANs on top of a team? Or even on top of a bond (I can reinstall and set it up as a bond easily enough, using active-backup, as far as I know; and, yes, I would reinstall the host from scratch to do this).

Apache umask

I need to set the umask for apache to 002. I've tried every idea I've found on the internet, but nothing make a difference. Most suggest that I put "umask 002" in /etc/sysconfig/httpd, but that doesn't seem to make a difference. Other's suggest adding something to the httpd.service script for systemd. And that doesn't make any difference. Any suggestion from this list would be appreciated. Emmett

Windows guest 4K virt-manager

I am running CentOS 7 and windows 10 guest. Trying to get 4K on Windows resolution. I did the "virsh edit Win10" and found the video setting an changed it to 64M. After shutting down and booting back up (all of virt-manager) my resolution is still not higher the 2560x Anyone gotten 4K on windows guest ? Whats the trick. I am using QXL. Thanks, jerry

I asked a similar question about a year ago and didn't get any answers. So I thought I'd try again. What do people do to get their syslog messages on CentOS 7 into a remote ELK stack. I've tried lots of things involving rsyslog, filebeat, redis, logstash and so on in lots of different configurations but nothing really works. I can get rsyslog to talk directly to logstash (acting as a syslog server) but the messages don't have facility or severity codes in them which makes it considerably more difficult to manage the messages. [OT] What is the max hardlink number for a single file on XFS

Hi list, I have a little script that uses rysnc and hardlink to perform backups. Some days ago a friend told me that rsync could crash if the hardlink limit is reached. I know (and tested) that for ext4 the max number of hardlink for a single file is 65000 but I can't get a limit on XFS. Due to the fact that I can't get good resources from google search, I tried to reach its limit with a script creating a regular file and create in another dir many hardlinks. Currently I have: -rw-r--r-- 8730476 root root 12 16 lug 12.13 hlink/1 My scripts is trying to reach 20 mln of hardlink so need time to finish but 8730476 of hardlinks is an huge number. Someone know this limit? Thank you in advance.

CUPS v1.6.3 on CentOS 7. Does anyone have any ideas? Please advise, Josh.

Need HELP with old DSL modem setup on CentOS 7

Hello all-- I'm in a bind trying to reset an older Nether DSL modem. I did a manual reset on it. It was set up as "pass thru" by me and I want to "undo" that. complex migration

Hello Everyone, I need to do a complex migration of either a guest VM as a whole or as individual files with a dump and load of a progress database-based ERP system. The old host is an Amd Opteron 8 Core 16 GB ram single Socket CPU with a RAID 10 array of 8x 500 GB SATA Disks. It is running Centos 6.10 as a base OS using OpenVZ as the VM technology. Kernel version is 2.6.32-042stab142.1 x86_64 The VM "bowser" is running CentOS 6.8, it's allocated all 8 Cores, 4 GB of ram, and 120 GB of thick provisioned space. This VM is running kernel 2.6.32-042stab142.1 i686/i386 - 32 bit OS. The new host has Dual Xeon Silver CPU's 256 GB ram, and a RAID 6 setup w/ 13.96 TB of total available storage of SSD drives. I've followed the instructions here: https://communities.vmware.com/message/1719787#1719787 and here: http://gurutek.biz/migrating-from-proxmoxopenvz-to-esxesxivmware-server-par… I am at the point where I have a .vmdk file created, and I've imported the machine into vmware, but the machine is not booting. The bios vmware simply says no operating system found. I can boot from a rescue disk, then mount the old hard drive, and I can see files from the old VM. I was able to chroot into the filesystem of the old system, and I was able to get the network card communicating and online. After chrooting into the base of the old filesystem, when I try to use yum to install a kernel and run yum updates, I have an issue where the system is trying to install the i686 and x86_64 versions of RPM's that conflict with each other , and they don't work because of cross dependencies. librt.so.1 is needed by (installed) libdrm-2.4.65-2.el6.i686, and many packages repeat for librt.so.1, libutil.so.1, libgmp.so.3, libgmpxx.so.4, liblber-2.4.so.2, libacl.so.1 I've tried the suggestion of running rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest, which completes but does not fix the files. Has anyone run into this i686 / x86_64 dual package conflicting issue before? Any suggestions? Hi there, Long-time user of CentOS 7 AMIs from the AWS Marketplace. I see that the latest CentOS 7 and all CentOS 8 AMIs are only available outside of the Marketplace ("These images are published outside of the AWS Market Place and are shared directly" - https://wiki.centos.org/Cloud/AWS) I'm really keen to understand if this is short-term situation, or if this is the indefinite future of CentOS AMI releases? There were a number of benefits to the Marketplace model - mainly for us is the ability to use Packer to fetch the latest AMI for the product code, plus also notifications. I realize this shouldn't happen, the file is a tgz and isn't being modified while being transmitted. This has happened maybe three times this year and unfortunately I've just had to deal with it rather than invest the time to do the research. CentOS 8 and webrtc plugin

I am trying to play with webrtc and gstreamer. libnice - nicesrc/nicesink elements (this is the only build-time dependency) - openssl - dtlsdec/dtlsenc elements - libsrtp2 - srtpdec/srtpenc elements - usrsctp - sctpdec/sctpenc elements (only required if you use data channels). These are dependencies (apparently). The first two I have. How do I get the last two or anyone got webrtc working with CentOS 8 ? Thanks all. Jerry

Generating X configuration files

I'm trying to make my computer work with a Fedora 32 live DVD. Video issues make it either crap out or only give me 640x480. Grrrr. Centos 7 is running just fine. I think I could make it go by booting to runlevel 3 and running startx manually. For that to work, I think I need to pass startx the right configuration file. To me, 'tain't obvious what to put in that file. Is it somehow possible to use composed ENV vars in a systemd unit file? Simple example, env file has ADDRESS=foo PORT=bar LISTEN=${ADDRESS}:${PORT} putting ${ADDRESS}:${PORT} directly in the unit file works, $LISTEN not. Does systemd supports such var substitution? -- Leon

Hey! I have a strange condition in one of the servers that I don't where to start looking. I login to the server via SSH (cant doit any other way) and anything that I type is slow HTTP sessions timeout waiting for screen redraw. So, the server is acting "slow". server is bare metal. no virtual services. no alarms in the disk raid note: server was restarted because of power failure. How to Mirror CentOS8 repository in CentOS7 Server via reposync

Hi I'm running CentOS7 server as ImageServer and local repository server. And i need to mirror CentOS8 repository (http://mirror.centos.org/centos-8/8.1.1911/AppStream/x86_64/os/ ) in my CentOS7 Server. If i mirror CentOS8 repository using repo sync command in CentOS7 it did not properly mirror centos8 repository, due to that when i install package from CentOS8 client machine getting following error. No available modular metadata for modular package 'python3-lldb-8.0.1-1.module_el8.1.0+215+a01033fb.x86_64', it cannot be installed on the system The downloaded packages were saved in cache until the next successful transaction. You can remove cached packages by executing 'dnf clean packages'. Not getting bootloader installed with CentOS 8 + mdraid

I am trying to use a kickstart to install CentOS 8.2 on a server with a pair of drives with Linux software RAID 1. The install completes, but the resulting system will not boot - I get "Booting from Hard drive C:" from the BIOS (Dell in legacy BIOS mode, not UEFI) and it stops. If I then start the installer in rescue mode and run grub2-install on the two drives, it boots okay. If I take out the RAID config and just install on the first drive, it boots fine - it appears to just be an issue with RAID. I tried my kickstart in a KVM VM with two disks, and it works there (I get RAID and a bootloader). Anybody else run into this? Any ideas? I've been installing from kickstarts for ages, including software RAID, but not CentOS 8 with software RAID until now. -- Chris Adams <linux(a)cmadams.net>

[OT] Bacula offsite replication

Hi everyone, I have updated my backup server to CentOS 8.2. It runs bacula performing backup on disks. I would like to replicate backups on another offsite machine. I read about the ability to configure a new storage daemon in the offsite location and create a Migration/Copy Jobs. If I'm not wrong, it replicates only volumes but not replicate the catalog. I will try this. Another way to replicate the volumes on another server is using rsync. What is your suggestion about this topic? Thank you in advance. Alessandro.

virt-manager guest display resize not keep

Hi All, I have CentOS 7 has host and CentOS 8 as guest. I ran the command: virsh edit CentOS8 and changed the vgamem to 65536. I Now get higher resolutions in the guest - I select the 4K resolution, all works. Then when I reboot I am back to 1024x768. Any thoughts on getting the C8 guest to keep its screen resolution ? Force package install using yum?

RPMFusion and NVIDIA driver problem

Hi list, I'm on C8.1 and I'm trying to install NVIDIA driver from rpmfusion-nonfree repository but it returns: package kmod-nvidia-3:440.82-2.el8.x86_64 requires kmod-nvidia-4.18.0-147.el8.x86_64 >= 3:440.82-2.el8, but none of the providers can be installed - conflicting requests - nothing provides kernel < 4.18.0-148.el8 needed by kmod-nvidia-4.18.0-147.el8.x86_64-3:440.82-2.el8.x86_64 (try to add '--skip-broken' to skip uninstallable packages or '--nobest' to use not only best candidate packages) and uname -r returns: 4.18.0-193.6.3.el8_2.x86_64 Seems that RPMFusion needs an update. Waiting for this there is a way to install this package without fall in problems? Thank you in advance.

fdisk boot partition

Hi: I always use network-scripts to start network at EL7. NetworkManager is not as good as network scripts under that OS. but now EL8 said that network-scripts is depreciated. I wonder if I should still use network-scripts to start network? I am afraid there will be new bugs for the network-scripts, like systemd service unit dependency. although it is solid at EL7.

CentOS 7 system running out of available memory, then unusable, network interfaces probably involved

Hello, my CentOS 7 system goes unstable after few days of use, memory consumption growing and never getting freed, until the system slows down to hell (swapping), kills apps, and eventually freezes or reboots itself. This only happens when I have two network interfaces turned on, one wired and one wireless, each to different routers. The hardware: a Dell Precision 7530, SSD, 16GB RAM. HW memory and disk both tested OK by software. According to lspci: 00:1f.6 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation Ethernet Connection (7) I219-LM (rev 10) 6e:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless-AC 9260 (rev 29) The software: I keep this CentOS 7 system up-to-date with the CR repo, excepted the microcode_ctl package, stuck to few versions back (updating it kills the system and potentially causes fs damages). Kernels reproducing the issue (IOW, all): kernel-3.10.0-1062.18.1.el7.x86_64 kernel-3.10.0-1127.el7.x86_64 kernel-3.10.0-1127.8.2.el7.x86_64 kernel-3.10.0-1127.13.1.el7.x86_64 Nothing jumps to my eyes looking at /var/log/messages but this, many occurrences: kernel: nf_conntrack: falling back to vmalloc. Adding root CA certificates for use by NSS applications?

I'm trying to get a third party application to use the root CA certificate of an SSL proxy - but can't work out how to install the cert for use by all users on CentOS 7 I have the proxy vendor's supplied CA cert in PEM format I can install the cert in a user's home directory using 'certutil' - and the application works OK - but I would like to do 'something' to install this cert somewhere central that will be picked up by all users After a bit of Googling, I've found that by default, EL7 uses 'p11-kit-trust.so' (from the p11-kit-trust package) as a drop-in replacement for the nss supplied 'libnssckbi.so' (via 'alternatives') - which, I believe, should be able to pick up CA certs installed under /etc/pki/ca-trust/source/anchors/ Strace'ing the app, I can see it reading the files under /etc/pki/ca-trust/source/... including the required CA cert - but the app fails to connect - but I have no idea what might be wrong ... Am I missing something obvious here? Is there an easier way to achieve what I want? Thanks James Pearson

CentOS 8 - Fail to mount ${HOME}

Hi, We have a large amount of CentOS 7 here and when a user logs in to any of them, his home directory is mounted of the network. When we tried to do this with CentOS 8, the user logs in but his home directory was created locally on the machine. - I have already disables this "nice" feature by running: [root@lab_cnt08 ~]# *authconfig --disablemkhomedir --update* - Both CentOS 7 and CentOS 8 machines reside in the same domain. Port forward internal host not working

Hi, I am trying to reach a Raspberry Pi on my physical LAN (192.168.10.132), via OpenVPN, from the internet. The Internet host is 154.77.x.x. This is also the OpenVPN router, 10.8.0.1. The Pi is on 10.8.0.203. I am trying to reach port 3000 from the internet. >From the CentOS 7 server, I can access the Pi over OpenVPN: root@ns1:[~]$ telnet 10.8.0.203 3000 Trying 10.8.0.203... ERROR Unknown --features options: ['hyperv_vpindex', 'hyperv_runtime', 'hyperv_stimer', 'hyperv_frequencies'] I can manually add the options on the xml file but i was wondering if the feature arguments are removed and they have no effect or if I'm missing something. php 5.6 on CentOS 6

I am in the process of moving various apps and data off a CentOS 6 server to a new server running CentOS 7. As part of the migration process I need to upgrade an app and corresponding data files which requires php 5.6. I do have php 5.5 (and 5.4) installed since earlier but now tried to install php 5.6 from SCL which failed. This is the package I tried: https://www.softwarecollections.org/en/scls/rhscl/rh-php56/ but the error message is that there is no package 5.6. Is this correct and what would the recommended procedure then be since I do need 5.6 for this. Use Remi's collection or something else? I was hoping SCL would have it since it is well-tried and easy to sandbox on the computer. Thank you. H

Blog article about the state of CentOS

Hi, I just read this blog article from austrian Linux expert Michael Kofler. For those among you who don't know the guy, he's my home country's number one Linux expert (known as "der Kofler") and most notably the author of a series of excellent books about Linux over the last 25 years. https://kofler.info/centos-8-wertlose-langzeitunterstuetzung/ Disclaimer : I've been a CentOS user (and fan) since 4.x, I'm using it on all my servers, and yes, I know the difference between upstream RHEL and CentOS. The article is in german, but the statistics graph is eloquent enough for the non-german-speaking users. It focuses on updates for CentOS 8, and more exactly the extended periods of time where there have been no updates available. The author's theory ("unspoken truth"): while it's a positive thing that Red Hat is sponsoring CentOS, the amount of sponsoring is just insufficient enough so that the product is "starved to death" by Red Hat (e. g. IBM) to encourage users to move to RHEL. The author's conclusion is quite severe: in the current state of things, CentOS 8 is not recommendable for production as updates are lagging too much behind. While CentOS 7 may be usable, CentOS 8 has been "degraded to teaching and testing purposes". Still according to Mister Kofler, this "sorry state of things" will probably encourage users to move to Oracle Linux, the other big RHEL clone. After some hesitation, I decided to share this on the mailing list. Since this raises some concerns, I'd be curious to have your take on this. Wrong version of php

It's been a while since I updated to php72 on this machine and there is some setting I must have forgotten. Apache, root and a user automatically get php72 when I run php in a terminal window, however, a php script picks up the wrong version of php, ie php54 and the version of php in /usr/bin/php is indeed version 5.4. I have googled without finding the answer but how do I make sure /all/ processes use php72 rather than the default 54 in CentOS 7? Surely there must be a better way than overwriting /usr/bin/php. What have I forgotten to do? Thank you.

Hello, i try to use (Centos8) NetworkManager builtin Prefix-Delegation for ipv6. Unfortunately i found no howto is helping me. i do: /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf: [main] dhcp=dhclient Modify Cons: nmcli con modify LOKAL1 ipv6.method shared nmcli con modify LOKAL2 ipv6.method shared nmcli con modify WAN_TK ipv6.method dhcp Before these modifications i got over pppoe the public ipv6. Now only ipv4. These steps are right/necassary. I see in logs these message: NetworkManager[5204]: <warn> [1592929660.5084] device (enp6s0.7.wan): failure to start DHCPv6: missing MAC address What is todo? Thanks a lot. Joe

firewall questions

I'm running Centos 7.8.2003, with firewalld. I was getting huge numbers of ssh attempts per day from a few specific ip blocks. The offenders are 45.0.0.0/24, 49.0.0.0/24, 51.0.0.0/24, 111.0.0.0/24 and 118.0.0.0/24, and they amounted to a multiple thousands of attempts per day. I installed and configured fail2ban, but still saw a lot of attempts in the logs, and the ipset created was filling up. I did some more research, and decided to use a few rich rules to block these attempts. I currently have these in place: #firewall-cmd --list-all public (active) target: default icmp-block-inversion: no interfaces: p3p1 sources: services: dhcpv6-client ftp http https imap imaps pop3 pop3s smtp-submission smtps ssh ports: 110/tcp 995/tcp 143/tcp 993/tcp 25/tcp 21/tcp protocols: masquerade: no forward-ports: source-ports: icmp-blocks: rich rules: rule family="ipv4" source address="49.0.0.0/24" reject rule family="ipv4" source address="51.0.0.0/24" reject rule family="ipv4" source address="111.0.0.0/24" reject But I still get hundreds of attempts reported in my fail2ban logs from these ip blocks. How is it that the rich rules don't drop these packets before pam/ssh/fail2ban ever get to see them? Hi, all We use AMD Rome CPUs, like EPYC 7452. RHEL said that RHEL 7.6.6 began to support these cpus(detials: https://access.redhat.com/support/policy/amd) , but we found that CentOS7.6 with kernel 3.10.0-957.21.3.el7.x86_64 also works fine. So, my questions are: 1) Is there any place that i can find the cpu support info? 2) Dose the kernel 3.10.0-957.21.3.el7.x86_64 from CentOS7.6 already contains changes made by kernel 3.10.0-957.27.2.el7 from RHEL7.6? 3) Does the kernel update has a release note or something like that and where to find ? Installing owncloud on CentOS 7 server

I transitioning an owncloud installation from a C6 server to a new C7 server and used yum install owncloud to install it on the C7 server. I expected /var/www/owncloud to be generated but alas not. Quick Googling just showed examples of installing from the latest owncloud repository but not using yum. Have I missed something obvious when using yum to install?

Updating microcode_ctl froze Centos7

Today when I ran yum update two packages came up microcode_ctl and unbound-libs. The updating process went fine until it outputted Running transaction Updating : 2:microcode_ctl-2.1-61.6.el7_8.x86_64 then it just froze. I could no longer ssh to the machine and the console was just blank. I had to shut down it hard. It came back up seemingly fine. But yum update doesn't work anymore. It says "Error importing repomd.xml from base/7/x86_64: Damaged repomd.xml file" I looked at the logs, but journalctl only shows the latest boot on this machine. So I guess I have three questions - Any idea what happened with the update process? - How can I repair repomd.xml? - How do I configure journalctl to store more boots? /Robin

Hi, i have a proliant dl380 g5, with an amd as1000. I try to install centos8 with gui, but when try to start the new installed system, the xserver don't start. There is a throuble with the amd es1000 driver. This grafic card, seems not supported more from amd. I need a minimalistic gui for study for rhcsa certification. The gui is mandatory for the exam. Bootable USB keys : which brand ?

Hi, In my daily work I'm mainly using USB keys for work : one with CentOS 7, one with OpenSUSE Leap 15.1, one with Slax Live for data recovery purposes, one with Ghost4Linux and one with FreeDOS which I use for flashing the odd BIOS. Last week I bought a set of three flashy colored USB keys in a local shop. To my surprise, none of them seem to be able to boot anything. When I write a bootable image (CentOS, OpenSUSE, whatever) to any one of the USB keys, the USB key boot option doesn't show up on any one of my sandbox PCs. Looks like I just learnt the hard way that some USB keys can't be used for installation purposes. As far as I can tell, I need a set of 8 GB keys so the biggest image, the CentOS 8 ISO, can fit. Can you recommend a no-nonsense USB key brand which I can use to make a set of USB installation keys ? Apache (httpd) fails to start at boot - Centos 8.1

If I do 'systemctl start httpd', apache will start right up. But during boot, it doesn't and I get the resulting errors below. Firewall is turned on. The listen parameter in httpd.conf is 10.20.30.11:80 The log files in /var/log/httpd are all owned by root. Httpd runs as user 'apache'. Can't access Squirrelmail on Centos 8

Good evening, I have not able able to run the http://ip-addr/src/configtest.php script, nor access Squirrelmail. Looking for suggestions on what I might have missed. When I try either http://ip-... or https://ip-..., I get the following reply Forbidden You don't have permission to access /webmail/src/configtest.php on this server. I got squirrelmail installed in /usr/share/squirrelmail and 'configured' to work (using ./conf.pl). This setup below is about the same setup on my Centos 6 box. I am getting a timeout on running totem .... searching led me to think its gvs related.... Error creating proxy: Error calling StartServiceByName for org.gtk.vfs.GoaVolumeMonitor: Timeout was reached (g-io-error-quark, 24) Then totem does start - but with like a 30 second delay. I ran this command and it says its inactive systemctl --user status gvfs-mtp-volume-monitor.service ● gvfs-mtp-volume-monitor.service - Virtual filesystem service - Media Transfer Protocol monitor Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/user/gvfs-mtp-volume-monitor.service; static; vendor preset: enabled) Active: inactive (dead) What is the cause of my timeout ? Attempting to PXE boot from the BaseOS/x86_64/kickstart/images/pxeboot/ files results in repeating messages Invalid or corrupt kernel image eventually changing to Could not find kernel image: centos8.2.x86_64/vmlinuz I downloaded the files again, from a different mirror, and they are all the same. Wiped the files and recreated /tftpboot/linux-install/centos8.2.x86_64/. No dice. Hello all; Has anyone installed samba4 from sources (samba-4.12.3.tar.gz) on CentOS 7? I explain the problem: to install samba-4.12.3 you need to install a version equal to or greater than 3.4.7 of gnutls; this (gnutls) depends on nettle and gmp. I am trying to install gnutls-3.6.14; I already have gmp (gmp-6.2.0) and nettle (nettle-3.6) installed (compiled from sources), but gnutls doesn't want to install, it tells me "Libnettle 3.4.1 was not found" when I run the ./configure Nettle is installed in /usr/local/include/nettle (all .h) and in /usr/local/lib64/libnettle.s0.8.0 I created a symbolic link for /usr/lib64 from /usr/local/lib64/libnettle.s0.8.0 as libnettle.so and libnettle.so.8; I ran the gnutls ./configure again, but it keeps saying it can't find libnettle 3.4.1 How can I do? firewall help request

Folks I'm struggling with my firewall settings, and would appreciate some help. I have a gateway machine (currently Centos 7 with IPV4 only) with two NICs. One is connected to the internet, the other to an internal network (10.0.0.0/24) of mixed hardware (windows7, android tablets, android phones, linux boxes) using NAT. I wish to block all outgoing connects to any external IP address on port 22 (ssh) originating from any internal machine except one (which has a known internal IP address). I've tried some commands using 'iptables' to accomplish this, but so far have failed. If anyone has a suggestion, I'd really appreciate it. In addition, a suitable version for 'firewalld' could be useful, as an upgrade to Centos 8 is in plan. Examples of what I've tried, and then tested. None of them stopped an outgoing SSH from an internal system. iptables -I INPUT -p tcp --dport 22 -s 10.0.0.0/24 -j DROP iptables -I INPUT -p tcp --dport 22 -s 10.0.0.0/24 -j DROP Much thanks David

I have centos7 with 1 network interface and on that IFwe have 2 vlan. >From both vlan we'd like to reach the internet independently so basically with 2 different gateways. we tried with all the routes,rules etc but only on one vlan we are able to ping 8.8.8.8 for instance. I'm assuming that your advice about LAN represents the internal network because on most routers, it is, and WAN is the internet connection. And ssh worked :-( unfortunately I know that many ISPs block outgoing port 25, so I know this is do-able. David

Simple scan in CentOS 7

I just installed C7 on a new computer and despite Simple Scan being installed as part of C7, I have not been able to get it to recognize my Canon scanner connected to a USB port. I did have it running on another computer with C7 so there should not be any inherent issues. On a lark I installed gscan2pdf and sane-backends-drivers-scanners and sane-find-scanner found it: found USB scanner (vendor=0x04a9 [Canon], product=0x1908 [CanoScan]) at libusb:001:010 I perused my notes for the old computer but did not see I installed any additional software to get it going but I might be wrong. What have I missed? Thank you.

iwlwifi problem after Centos 8.2 update

Hi! I get high cpu usage on my laptop (yes im running Centos on my laptop) after my last update. At the beginning i though it was libvrtd but after stopping it gnome monitor keep showing high cpu usage although i couldnt find the app that was responsible for it with the top command. I searched my log files and I saw alot of iwlwifi message. I had to turn off wifi in order to stop high cpu usage. Any ideas how to solve it? smb protocol version

I have a handful of Linux Servers, running Centos 6.10, and 6.8 with the main host running openvz w/ Centos 6.10 as the main OS. Two of the guests are running samba, sharing directories out to windows clients. I'm in the process of migrating servers over to vmware, using Centos 7.8. How can I determine what smb protocol version is being used in the shares for each server? I don't see the protocol specified anywhere in smb.conf? Chris

I burned a total of 7.55Gb from an ISO image to a dual-layer HP DVD+R disc. I got a bootable USB stick containing 8.1 and it's 7.65 Gb so apparently my ISO image file is messed up. I was able to install C8 just fine from the USB stick, so marking this as solved. Thanks, --Ed

/etc/networks file

I am having some network connectivity issues that manifest itself through ping, wget, dnf, etc. The symptoms are intermittent ability to ping, was wget, or connect to repositories. Where this inquiry is going is: If your internal network is using 192.168.1 or 10..50.10, what should be in /etc/networks. My current file contains: default 0.0.0.0 loopback 127.0.0.0 link-local 169.254.0.0 And I'm pretty sure this is the default OS installed contents. I don't think this is related to my connectivity issue, just curious about what this file does. My old server (which is working just fine) has the same content in its /etc/networks file so not configuring this does not seem to matter one way or the other. If one were using 192.168.1.x network , assume 'default' should be 192.168.1.0. 'Link-local' should match??? Thanks, Jay
