find errors in a directory of files

hello list, I'm trying to write a script that will search through a directory of trace logs for an oracle database. From what I understand new files are always being created in the directory and it's not possible to know the exact names of the files before they are created. The purpose of this is to create service checks in nagios. Because you don't know the names of the files ahead of time traditional plugins like check_logs or check_logfiles.plwon't work. Here's what I was able to come up with: #!/bin/bash log1='/u01/app/oracle/admin/ecom/udump/*' crit1=($(grep 'ORA-00600' $log1)) crit2=($(grep 'ORA-04031' $log1)) crit3=($(grep 'ORA-07445' $log1)) if [ $crit1 ] ; then echo "$crit1 on ecom1" status=2 elif [ $crit2 ]; then echo "$crit2 on ecom1" status=2 elif [ $crit3 ]; then echo "$crit3 on ecom1" status=2 fi echo $status exit $status This is a very early version of the scripts, so as you can see I'm echoing a test message at the end letting you know the exit status. The problem with this script is that it is only able to detect one error in the logs. If you echo more than one test phrase into a log file or into multiple log files it still only picks up one error message. SSL Library Error: -8181 Certificate has expired

Hi List Just had one of my servers fail serving web pages and apache produced a log file of nearly 1,000,000 lines and 130Mb in about 18 hours with the following: "SSL Library Error: -8181 Certificate has expired Unable to verify certificate 'Server-Cert'. Add "NSSEnforceValidCerts off" to nss.conf so the server can start until the problem can be resolved." repeated any where from 4 to 20 times per second until I stopped the server. Anyone know why this kind of thing occurs - surely logging this once is enough?? If it is such a critical thing, then why no warning in the log files that it is about to expire?? - all in all a bit of a surprise. The suggested remedy does work and I will get a new certificate issued and installed in due course. Google does not show me anything that helps in regards to my questions. Has anyone else seen and solved this in an elegant manner? TIA Rob

bonding and ifcfg config

Configure LAGG Interface?

Greetings- I'd like to configure multiple copper NICs on a server running CentOS 6.2 in a LAGG configuration for better throughput to the core switch. After quite a bit of searching, I'm not seeing anything of the sort. Is LAGG specific to the BSD world and the HP switches I'm running? Or, does it go by a different name? Bonding perhaps? If so, is bonding compatible with LAGG? --Tim

Urgent help on replacing /var

In a moment of epic stupidity, having ran out of space on the root partition of a server due to /var chewing up the space, I added a separate drive for the purpose of mounting it as /var To do so, I mounted the new drive as /var2, cp -R (in hindsight should had rsync to preserve attributes), deleted the original /var to free up space, edited fstab and rebooted... unsurprisingly to a fubar'd server. The thing is it still boots, I can get into single user mode but a full init get stuck at starting the syslogger. What is the best way to rescue the server now from my own stupidity and keeping all the existing configuration and data?

samba3x PDC and Win XP

I am at my wits end on this one. Ever since I upgraded to samba3x (present version 3.5.10-0.110.el5_8) in preparation for adding a Win 7 client, my WinXP client can no longer find their roaming profiles nor can they assign their home shares to a drive at login. Logins and authentication work just fine and I can see the home and profile shares from the Win XP client after login. Samba - Allow writing of files, but not creation of new folders?!?

Greetings- Sorry for the slightly OT post, although this does concern implementation on a CentOS 5 or 6 server. :) Long story short, is it possible to configure Samba such that specific users are able to have 'normal' read/write access on a share, but not the ability to create new *folders*? I researched this in the past, and I seem to remember something related to ACLs or similar, but I'm not finding it now and my attempts at finding info via the Samba direct resources are coming up dry. Any thoughts? --Tim

Virtual appliance - initial setup

Dear everyone, I'm creating a virtual appliance based on CentOS 6.3 that will be packaged as OVF. Is anyone aware of an existing solution for post-deployment configuration (hostname, network settings and root password as a minimum) other than editing config files by hand - I'd like the process to be more user friendly than that if possible. Ideally it should be hypervisor-independent. It seems that anaconda can only be used during initial setup. How to trigger automount of USB drives in Centos6

In brief: Is there is anyway to trigger the same automount mechanism, that X appears to use, on unmounted USB drives that are already connected? Background: I've got a C6 server with default desktop GUI installed for the sake of the onsite admin. There is a bash script I wrote that runs every night checking for specific folders on any drive and dumps data into it. To ensure fs integrity, I do an unmount in the script when it's done in case anybody simply yanks the drive out without doing the proper process. Now due to that, I would need to remount the drive when the script runs if it wasn't unplugged and replugged to trigger the automount. Problem is, it is not certain that the same drive will be used so I cannot simply hard code a line that just do a mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sde1 /media/backup. I cannot assume it would always be say /dev/sde1 or /dev/sdf2 as that depends on how many drives are connected before that and how was that particular drive partitioned. The inbuilt auto mount mechanism also appears to use different mountpoints for different USB drives (based on drive label?) and so the best way for me is to force all USB drives to be remounted, and scan through the /media folder as that is where the automount mounts the partitions. I could try to mount all drives found in /proc/partitions but that seems very dangerous since the list includes md partitions and array members. So the question is whether there is anyway to trigger the same automount mechanism, that X appears to use, on any unmounted USB drives? Trying resources I found online, It doesn't seem to be autofs or gnome-mount mechanism as neither of these are installed on the server. Both automount and gnome-mount command not found.

Hi! I'm trying systemtap on CentOS 6.2 kernel-2.6.32-220.23.1.el6.x86_64. My problem is that I can't find kernel-debuginfo... corresponding to my kernel version. The systemtap docs suggest rebuilding the kernel from sources, but it looks like I will have to install my own kernel, which is not acceptable on the production machine. kmod-nvidia?

I just went to install kmod-nvidia on a 64-bit CentOS 6.2 system... and enabling elrepo, yum can't find it. There's a page for it, but that was last updated last year, and there are also references to packages for older Nvidia cards, but not the current. What do I not know? mark

CentOS 6.3 on ASUS G73S does not work external video

Hi List, just wondering which driver I need to be looking at / for that deals with the laptop's external video connector. Background - went to deliver a presentation last week and found that there was no way to get any video output to the external D-15 connector (hooked up to a video projector). Eventually I re-booted to windoze 7 and all worked just fine - major embarrassment after telling everyone how great Linux was. The laptop has a nvidia GTX 460M card and I use the el-repo kmod-nvidia-295.59-1.el6.elrepo.x86_64 and nvidia-x11-drv-295.59-1.el6.elrepo.x86_64 I do have compiz-0.8.2-24.el6.x86_64 and compiz-gnome-0.8.2-24.el6.x86_64 running but as these should not be dealing directly with the hardware am not thinking they should matter. Not sure where to start trouble shooting - I tried lots of different screen resolutions via the System > Preferences > Display but no joy getting any signal out to the external connector. This laptop does have an hdmi socket but I was not using that, I thought the good old fashioned D-15 video plug should "just work" (tm). The function key <Fn> <F8> did toggle the laptop screen off and on and varied the resolution of the laptop display but never any output on the external connector. I booted the laptop with the display not connected and then tried connecting it - no joy. Then rebooted with it connected and tried power on and off two times but never any signal on the external connector simply booting into w7 and it immediately worked Any ideas of what magic foo I need to get this working would be appreciated. centos 4.9 + ip6tables

Hi I have an old server running centos 4.9 and recently I added ipv6 connectivity to it, however I wanted to use iptables to restrict access like im doing over ipv4. I tried using yum to install ip6tables but that's not available on the repo. I'm trying to figure out what my options are, how do you guys recommend I go about installing ip6tables. I guess I could upgrade the server from 4.9 to 5.x but I heard this could cause issues with things already installed and I have never done an upgrade like this. This is a server running chroot bind compiled manually. My other option is to use an ACL on the router the server connects to but I really wanted to get ip6tables on there. Paul

Hello, This is somehow off-topic, since the problem appears on a modified CentOS-6.2 (turned into a xen-4.1 host) : I get SELinux errors, and I'm not able to understand them. From audit2why : type=AVC msg=audit(1343724164.898:298772): avc: denied { mac_admin } for pid=12399 comm="restore" capability=33 scontext=unconfined_u:unconfined_r:unconfined_t:s0-s0:c0.c1023 tcontext=unconfined_u:unconfined_r:unconfined_t:s0-s0:c0.c1023 tclass=capability2 ... and from audit2allow : #============= unconfined_t ============== allow unconfined_t self:capability2 mac_admin; I don't know what triggers these records in /var/log/audit (everything seems to work). Running retorecon -rv / doesn't produce any error. Can someone tell me what is the mac_admin functionnality, and if it is safe to allow it ? I easily get 110 Mbytes/sec. on a gigabit connection. If you need encryption, and your transfer is CPU limited, you should investigate which cipher to use. In my case arcfour128 is the fastest, so I use: rsync --rsh='/usr/bin/ssh -c arcfour128' ... after the initial transfer with ttcp. I would suggest an automated kickstart install, so you would not have to care about console access... If you still need it, google for "kickstart serial console". You can also use vnc... If you had a DB9 serial port I'd say you'll really want a null modem cable to interface with the device (but it doesn't) - hopefully you know or have the cable necessary to talk to it via the RJ-45 console. You may consider using CentOS 5 for the reason below. Does your appliance's CPU support PAE? Starting with CentOS 6, the i686 kernels have PAE enabled. If you need one without PAE you'll have to compile it yourself. Not a huge deal, but certainly not as simple. Your best bet in any instance (CentOS 5 or 6) is to build the OS on another piece of hardware or a VM and copy it over to your CF card. There are a few items you'll want to do to reduce writes to your CF card and tune it for the embedded hardware [0]. Hope this helps! I'm trying to rsync a 8TB data folder containing squillions of small files and it's taking forever (i.e. weeks) to get anywhere. I'm assuming the slow bit is check-summing everything with a single CPU (even though it's on a 12-core server ;-( ) Is it possible to do something simple like scp the whole dir in one go so they're duplicates in the first instance, then get rsync to just keep them in sync without an initial transfer? Or is there a better way? Modifying a netinstall ISO image

I want to make a very minor change to the netinstall ISO image, namely adding a few parameters to the boot line to automatically kick off a kickstart installation. Here is my approach: mount -o loop CentOS-6.2-i386-netinstall.iso /mnt cp -pr /mnt /tmp cd /tmp/mnt vi isolinux/isolinux.cfg # Add some stuff to the default append line and reduce timeout mkisofs -o /tmp/CentOS-6.2-i386-netinstall-ks.iso -b isolinux/isolinux.bin -c isolinux/boot.cat -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table -R -J -v -T . I got the mkisofs command line from http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/5.2/Installation_Guide/s2-steps-make-cd.h… (I couldn't find anything similar in the CentOS/RHEL 6.X documentation). This appears to work just fine, but the resulting ISO image is about 20% bigger (194M vs. 162M) and has an extra TRANS.TBL file at the top level. Any ideas what is causing this? It's no big deal as I've got things working, but I'm curious nonetheless... Alfred

Hi, I install a new 4 Port GBit Server with centos 6.3 and I'd like to use nic bonding. The other question: What should I set on the cisco switch for the Port-channel options? As far as I understand for performance and redundancy I will use LACP and balance-alb. Is gnome-devel-docs supposed to work with devhelp?

I just installed gnome-devel-docs with the objective of having a local copy of the gnome hig-book and now that I have it installed I don't know how to use it. I had assumed that it would show up in devhelp but it doesn't. What I have is a bunch of XML files in /usr/share/gnome/help/hig-book/C, and when I try to view one with firefox it tells me "This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below. su path hard coded?

Is there any way of changing the PATH that's set by 'su' to be specific to my needs? It looks like 'su' has the path's hard coded. % rpm -qf /bin/su coreutils-5.97-34.el5_8.1 % strings /bin/su | grep local.bin /usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin /usr/local/bin:/bin:/usr/bin I could kludge it with pam_env, I guess, but that may have more impact than just 'su' and I'd like to avoid side-effects. problem with machine "freezing" for short periods

I have two HP dc7800 convertible minitowers that are exhibiting the following issue: every 5-10 minutes, they will "freeze" for about 30 seconds, and then pick right back up again. During the freeze, it seems that nothing at all happens on the system; the clock doesn't even advance (it just picks up again with the next second, and that 30-or-so seconds are lost). I've tried both CentOS 5.8 and 5.7, thinking it was a kernel incompatibility, but the problem happened with both versions. I have tried different hard drives, different memory, even swapped the entire machine, and the problem exists everywhere. I have tried adding "pci=nommconf" to the kernel line, as that was reported as being necessary back with 5.2 on these machines, but that made no difference (and shouldn't be necessary now, anyway, as I believe the issue has either been fixed or worked-around). I am stuck, and can't figure out where to even suspect the problem might actually be. There are no errors getting logged anywhere that I can find, probably because everything just "stops" temporarily, so there's nothing for the system to log. Does anyone have any idea where I could look to fix this? I think I am next going to go back to 5.2, where the pci=nommconf is necessary, because at least back that far it appears to have been working for other people. However, I really would like to have this running 5.8. DNS lookup delay with centos & postfix

I'm a bit baffled by this and I'm looking for ideas... background: two DNS servers (ns1 & ns2)(64bit CentOS 5.8) one email server (64bit CentOS 5.8 & postfix 2.3.3) one nagios server (64bit CentOS 5.8 & nagios 3.3.1) situation: - all servers configured to use both DNS servers for lookups - ns1 server down for hardware problem - nagios alerts that smtp on email server taking longer than 2 seconds to respond - nagios alert for smtp on email server clears when ns1 returns to service - when I use dig from the email server command line there is no problem or delay when ns1 is offline. It worked without a hitch using ns2. Anyone have any ideas for why nagios would have trouble testing smtp on the email server when the primary dns goes offline? I'm not even sure where to look or who else would make sense to ask the question of on this one. I'd appreciate any insight anyone out there has on this. -- Steve

using ip address on bonded channels in a cluster

I'm creating a firewall HA cluster. The proof of concept for the basic firewall cluster is OK. I can bring up the cluster, start the iptables firewall, and move all of this with no problem. I'm using Conga to do all of this configuration on Centos 6.3 servers. To extend the "HA" part of this, I'd like to use bonded channels instead of plain old NICs. The firewall uses the "IP address" service for the outside firewall IP addresses. Each server behind the firewall is NATted to one of these external IPs on the firewall's external interface. I'm not seeing how I can use bonded channels anywhere for these "IP address" services. Part of the problem is that Conga will "guess" at which interface to place the ip address service upon. In the case of bonded channels, I don't think Conga is even aware of the "bondx" interface, and Conga only uses interfaces like eth0, eth1, etc. I realize that the sysconfig network scripts will come into play here as well, but that's another problem for me to tackle. Does anyone have any experience with bonded channels and Conga? I could sure use some help with this. Thanks, steve campbell

wlan and macvtap?

Greetings, This is my fist time posting to a mailing list. For the past few days I have been trying to mimic my former windows workstation with a centos 6.3 workstation at work. I have gotten really far but am now facing an issue I cant seem to solve on my own. My former workstation had vmware for running my virtual machines. Most of the time I would run just two virtual machines, but sometimes more, and each virtual machine would have access to one of my hosts network interfaces. I have two, one connected by cable to the corporate lan and one wireless interface connected to an access point which gives me and my colleagues direct access to the internet. After having read some documentations I decided upon using "macvtap" in VEPA mode for my guest virtual machines. This, to me, seem to be the most clean solution without having to create bridges, this way when I start a virtual machine the macvtap interface is created automatically. Plus I have read that NetworkManager does not play nicely (yet) with bridge interfaces and the virtual machines are accessible from their connected network environments. This did not work at first because I had not yet put my physical network interface in to promiscuous mode. Was I wrong in expecting this to be done automatically? Since my macvtap interface requires this to work "properly"? After having set the corporate lan network interface, in to promiscuous mode my virtual machine received an IP address and all was well. However this did not work for my wlan interface after having done the same. It too was set in to promiscuous mode but the virtual machine is not receiving an ip address from the DHCP server, which is the access point. I changed the network settings on the virtual machine from DHCP to manual but that too did not work: no network communication. Does macvtap not work with wlan interfaces? Or am I doing something wrong. I am using centos 6.3, with kvm, libvirt and virt-manager, have not used any none standard repository for installation or updates. Regards, Darod Zyree

A "problem" is a crashing kernel or buggy drivers. My opinion after this experience is that it'd help for CentOS to include system-config-network-tui as part of the base install. That is my honest opinion about this experience. It'd have saved me from some minor annoyance, albeit an annoyance nonetheless. Just think the opposite: what would be the expense-damage of including it as part of the base install?. Would it: 1. Break the OS 2. Make things easier for people who end up in the same situation I did. 3. Affect the balance of the Universe. ;) Your choice. I think 2. FC

Can someone help with SpamBayes problem?

I've posted to the SpamBayes users list, but there seems to be no traffic there, so I've had no replies. If there is anyone here using SpamBayes, I'd appreciate some advice or at least suggestions.... I'm running Centos 5.8 here. Day before yesterday I decided to look and see if there was a newer SpamBayes than I was then using. lo and behold, there was. I was using 1.1a4, and there was a 1.1a6. so I downloaded and installed it. bad move. having done that, I now have no spam filtering at all. I run my own sendmail mail server here, and it uses procmail to deliver. Procmail invokes one of the SpamBayes tools for every email, and it adds a X-SpamBayes header with its determination of spamminess. except that now it doesn't. the nightly retrain event (a cron job) also fails, with complaints about invalid syntax in: File "/usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/lockfile-0.9.1-py2.4.egg/lockfile/linklockfile.py", line 6 from . import (LockBase, LockFailed, NotLocked, NotMyLock, LockTimeout, ^ SyntaxError: invalid syntax a little snooping around at python.org shows that the "from . import" syntax was added in python 2.5. However, on Centos 5.8 we still have Python 2.4.3. (never mind that the docs on SpamBayes claim it will run on Python 2.2, they're plainly wrong). So, I tried to reinstall SpamBayes 1.1a4 over top of what I had. It appeared to install (to the extent that the info displayed when the installer runs means anything), but it doesn't work either. no spam filtering, no nightly cron job. I'm guessing I'll have to figure out, in detail, which files were installed by the 1.1a6 installation and go remove each individual one then try reinstalling 1.1a4. Unless someone can suggest a better path to try. I'd appreciate any suggestions any of you may wish to make. thanks in advance! Using two subnets to change network configuration

Problem: My network uses the 192.168.1.0/24 network. Since is the most common network in all of the world it begins presenting problems when I want to set up vpns, or try to do other routing. The solution: Change the network from 192.168.1.0/24 to 172.24.24.0/22. This is somewhere in the middle of the less frequently used RFC-1918 20 bit private network range. My network contains 40 or so nodes, windows, linux, and proprietary operating systems of various types (TiVos, iPhones, iPads, TVs, BluRay players, WAP's, etc.) What I would like to do to minimize down time would be to create a single new machine on the network with addresses on both networks and set up as a router between the networks. That way, I can convert the machines one at a time, and not loose any connectivity. When all done, take the temporary router down and just use the new addresses. Machines are set up both static and DHCP, and there are some virtual servers running on a VMware machine. Updating all of the machines using DHCP can be done in a single pass, but the static machines will have to be done one at a time. Can anyone give me any pointers to web sites to help set this up. I know how to set up multiple addresses on the same NIC (eth0 and eth0:0). After that, I'm at a bit of a loss. And Yes, I know setting up multiple subnets on the same physical wire is a bad idea, but this is only for a couple of days until I can get everything moved to the new address scheme. Thanks Harold

Manual OOM killing?

Hey guys and gals, Yesterday I had one of my scientists kill one of my servers when his program ran amok and gobbled up all the memory, or forked too many processes, or I'm just not exactly sure what to be honest. Is there something I can run manually in cron to look for rampant programs and kill them? I know that may be hard to discern but I could also include a list if "known good" programs not to kill, as well as a list of "known suspect" user IDs Anyone ever done this? Bind isn't working. after upgrade.

Hello Mates, I just reciently updated BIND on my CentOS 6.2 (don't remember which version) but now I am using version: BIND version 9.8.2 The packages I have: bind bind-libs bind-chroot bind-utils bind-devel First of all, doing "service named status" it throws me: WARNING: key file (/etc/rndc.key) exists, but using default configuration file (/etc/rndc.conf) rndc: connection to remote host closed This may indicate that * the remote server is using an older version of the command protocol, * this host is not authorized to connect, * the clocks are not synchronized, or * the key is invalid. After a Google search I found: to remove rdnc.key and it was suppose to be working ok. and I chown named:named the file /etc/named.conf, now if I do "service named status" it throws me: version: 9.8.2rc1-RedHat-9.8.2-0.10.rc1.el6_3.1 CPUs found: 4 worker threads: 4 number of zones: 17 debug level: 0 xfers running: 0 xfers deferred: 0 soa queries in progress: 0 query logging is OFF recursive clients: 0/0/1000 tcp clients: 0/100 server is up and running named (pid 1456) is running... RAID card selection - JBOD mode / Linux RAID

I don't think this is off topic since I want to use JBOD mode so that Linux can do the RAID. I'm going to hopefully run this in CentOS 5 and Ubuntu 12.04 on a Sunfire x2250 Hard to get answers I can trust out of vendors :-) I have a Sun RAID card which I am pretty sure is LSI OEM. It is a 3G/s SAS1 with 2 external connectors like the one on the right here : http://www.cablesondemand.com/images/products/CS-SAS1MUKBCM.jpg And I have 2 x Sun J4400 JBOD cabinets each with 24 disks. If I buy a new card that is 6G/s SAS2 with the same connector, can I connect my cabinets to it and have them work? Even if they only work at 3G/s I don't care. I've also hit an issue with the number of logical devices allowed, and am wondering whether this might be a HW, FW or SW limitation if anyone knows. I want to run everything in JBOD mode and let Linux do the RAID. So for the first cabinet I ran this command 24 times to create a logical drive for each physical one /usr/StorMan/arcconf create 1 logicaldrive max volume 0,X noprompt Where X goes from 0 to 23 Went great, created /dev/sd[c-z] and I was able to use those with mdadm to create 4 x RAID6 arrays and then a big RAID0 out of the 4 x RAID6. Works great! Then I try to connect the 2nd cabinet and when I run the above arcconf command it tells me there are already 24 logical devices, and this is the max. Anyone know whether that is HW, FW or SW? Would a new card fix this problem? The fact that your machine with the 290 driver only sees the kmod-nvidia for 295 and does not see nvidia-x11-drv is a big clue. You might want to double check the includepkgs= line on the machine you originally posted about (not this latest machine), and make sure that it isn't: includepkgs=nvidia-x11-drv I can duplicate this behavior very easily, and can duplicate the reverse behavior as well, by manipulating the includepkgs= line. Here's an example run, from a RHEL 6.3 machine (same would apply to CentOS, just with a few differences in the yum output dealing with the RHN repos....): <MVNCH> Works fine. The includpkgs= line has to include all dependencies, as it really does do what the man page says it does. Try it without the includepkgs= line, or with it commented out, and see if you get different results. Thank you *so* much - this works. One oddity: originally, I'd had only includepkgs=kmod-nvidia, *not* the nvidia-x11-drv. My last try, last week, I'd added extra lines with that on two separate lines: includepkgs=kmod-nvidia includepkgs=nvidia-x11-drv Just now, following your example, I put them on one line includepkgs=nvidia-x11-drv kmod-nvidia and it worked with no problem at all. Odd. And for the guy from the elrepo team, you'll note it was *not* an elrepo problem, which is what I'd suspected, unless the repodata file's changed since Friday. mark

n00b rsyslog.conf question - how to separate local syslog from network appliance syslog?

I have several network appliances, and I want aggregate their syslog output for later analysis. Eventually I might think about a Splunk box, but for the interim I'm hoping to just build a CentOS 6 syslog server and have it aggregate everything on it for quick review. I installed rsyslog and am looking through the /etc/rsyslog.conf file for what I configure to (a) listen for syslog input from other devices (UDP port 514 is fine), (b) make a log, and (c) log rotate files. (a) I see in there (if I comment it out) # Provides UDP syslog reception $ModLoad imudp $UDPServerRun 514 (Obviously add an iptables rule to let this traffic in) (b) I see options in there, but am not sure how to separate the local logs from the remote logs. Is it something like the following? *.*;local6.none; auth,authpriv.none -/var/log/syslog (c) I understand I can do if I edit /etc/logrotate.d/MyNetworkAppliance.log. This isn't as big of a concern right now. Just trying to figure out how to log things separately. :/ Any suggestions on what I should do to make this work?

This alias should be a great default addition to the bashrc... as it helps install packages to a CentOS system from the mounted install CD before you get networking up and running... alias localyum='yum --disablerepo=* localinstall' Does Red Hat care about Requests for Enhancement? or is filing a bug pointless? Surely there' s a way to obtain the "window name" -which appears on the Window Manager' s Titlebar- for running processes, right?. Well, I can't find it... I mean, the names that appear below each icon when you alt-tab to switch an app to the foreground. Is there a simple way to obtain that data along with matching PIDs, from a Bash script? any built-in tools that provide such? Can't get Grub work on clone of machine

Hi. I have cloned a RHEL 5.6 physical server over to a ESXi 5.0 Virtual Machine. Using a live CD on the new Virtual Machine I created 3 partition /boot (/dev/sda1), / (/dev/sda2) and swap (/dev/sda3), I then mounted the / (sda2) partition and created the /boot directory and mount the boot partition partition /dev/sda1 into /boot. I then used rsync to copy the source machine over to the Virtual Machine. I have not been able to get Grub to go further than : GRUB Loading stage1.5. GRUB Loading, please wait... CentOS 6.2 x86_64 + PHP 5.3.3 + Zend Guard Loader v3.3 == Segfault

Hello everyone, I've got issues getting Zend Guard Loader v3.3 running. Tried several installations, doesn't work for any. Once I install Zend Guard Loader my PHP CLI binary starts to segfault *at exit*. Same is true for apache processes with mod_php enabled: Works until you SIGHUP your apache processes. Doing that your webserver quits with a segfault. Can anyone reproduce that issue? Does anyone know a way to work around it? Thank you very much! Question 6.3 pulseaudio

Hi I am experimenting with pulseaudio. I have everything working as a normal user which is the correct way. However, I have an application that runs as root that wants to use sound. My /etc/asound.conf is all set for pulse. I tried doing "gpasswd -a root pulse-access" and restarted my application but that did not help. Was wondering if someone has ran into this and knows a trick. Pulse is running as a normal user and I just want a root task to be able to use the sound card as well. Thanks, Jerry

installing centos 6 on an old bird

Guys, I've been trying to install centos 6.2, then 6.3 onto a supermicro 6013P-8 which does not have a DVD rom drive. Those newer version of CentOS only have DVD (not CD) iso versions so I've been sharing the install via NFS. With each try the install hangs forever installing 'selinux-policy-targeted-3.7.19-154.el6.noarch'. How can I disable that feature and / or SE Linux altogether so that I can get CentOS 6 installed? Hello CentOS Guys, What do you think about the Oracle Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel? Since Release 2 of the UEK Kernel, all updates are available free of charge > http://public-yum.oracle.com/ My questions: Does the Oracle UEK kernel really perform better than the default centos kernel? Missing /usr/share/X11/fonts/encodings/encodings.dir on CentOS 6 ?

I'm trying to work out if this is a bug or a feature of CentOS 6 ... it appears the file /usr/share/X11/fonts/encodings/encodings.dir is missing on CentOS 6 The file is owned by the RPM xorg-x11-fonts-misc - but is a 'ghost' file - that is, it is owned by the RPM but doesn't exist in the RPM However, nothing (as far as I can tell) re-generates this file on CentOS 6 In CentOS 5, the file is a ghost file owned by the xorg-x11-fonts-base RPM - but the RPM %post scripts generates this file (along with /usr/share/X11/fonts/encodings/large/encodings.dir file). There is nothing similar in the %post section of the CentOS 6 xorg-x11-fonts-misc RPM I'm not sure if this file is missing by design - or is a bug ... The reason I ask, is that a user has an application that is looking for an X11 font name that does not appear in any font.scale or font.dir files on CentOS 6 - but does on CentOS 5 - but the actual (identical) font file exists on CentOS 6 The font.scale and font.dir files have fewer entries on CentOS 6 than the corresponding CentOS 5 files Stracing mkfontscale shows that it tries to open /usr/share/X11/fonts/encodings/encodings.dir - which isn't there - however, if I manually create this file on CentOS 6 - using the command 'mkfontscale -n -e /usr/share/X11/fonts/encodings' and then re-create the font.scale and font.dir files for font directory in question - then the 'missing' font name is now listed - and can be used by the application So, I'm trying to work out if I'm missing something here - or this is a bug/feature of CentOS 6 ? YUM FAILED AFTER YUM CLEANALL

Dear all, my yum was working fine. I was just trying to remove cache from yum through yum cleanall, after that i tried to do yum update, but it failed to do update and giving fallowing error bash-4.1# yum update Loaded plugins: fastestmirror, refresh-packagekit Loading mirror speeds from cached hostfile Could not retrieve mirrorlist http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=6&arch=i386&repo=os error was 14: PYCURL ERROR 22 - "The requested URL returned error: 407" Error: Cannot find a valid baseurl for repo: base i later checked the var/cache/yum and var/lib/yum.....all the "base", "extras", "updates", "centosplus", "rpmforge" folders are empty......i dont know what happened. can any one please solve this error and help me to set yum working again. LibreOffice does not start

Hi, I just upgraded to C-6.3. Since the upgrade when I try to start LibreOffice I get the following error: "The application cannot be started. A general error occurred while accessing your central configuration." I tried running it from both the command line and the application menu. If I run it as root it starts up normally. Google says a lot of people are having the problem but there do not seem to be any useful solutions. Has anyone solved this problem? 6.3: service not starting?

Before I roll it out to users for their workstations, I updated my own system to 6.3, just did an update a few minutes ago, then rebooted. Came up... but when I went to use my PIV card for credentials to certain other machines, it didn't read the card. I found that pcscd was not running - when I did a service restart, it said "failed" on shutdown, then ok on startup. chkconfig --list tells me it's supposed to be on. Now, I'm pretty sure I saw this behavior with motion on a server I did a week or so ago, also: same thing, chkconfig says it should be on, but it was never turned up. This is a reboot after update, not a new install, and selinux is permissive in both cases. Has anyone else seen this, with optional services? mark

Dear Friends, I have 2 server and one client. In a server side I have installed Centos 6.2 and the client side ubuntu10.04. Unable to download " yum groupinstall 'Development Tools' ". When I run " glusterfs -f /etc/glusterfs/glusterfs.vol /mnt/glusterfs " on client side it is working . centos 5.5 yum updates

This used to work for me last week I basically need to install maven2 along with all its dependencies So I follow the suggestions at http://www.davehodgkinson.com/blog/2011/04/installing-maven-on-a-fresh-redh… Now at the yum update step, I have started seeing lots of HTTP Error 404. Have some of the repos moved? I know a solution is yum clean all and then do yum update but then that also updates firefox and xulrunner for me which screws up product I use. Please tell me a way out. I dont want to do firefox/xulrunner upgrade, but just maven2 installation as suggested on the page thanks, pankaj -- पंकज एम तोलानी

Hi all. I've updated google-chrome to recent version and it gets unbooted, when I fired google-chrome up I got messages like these: /usr/bin/google-chrome: /lib/libz.so.1: no version information available (required by /usr/bin/google-chrome) /usr/bin/google-chrome: /lib/libz.so.1: no version information available (required by /usr/bin/google-chrome) /opt/google/chrome/chrome: /lib/libz.so.1: no version information available (required by /opt/google/chrome/chrome) /opt/google/chrome/chrome: /lib/libz.so.1: no version information available (required by /opt/google/chrome/chrome) I'm familiar with selinux bug[1] and my issue is similar for this, but selinux in my system is completely disabled. I've opened issue at chrome's bug tracker[2] but not recived conceived response yet. Do you see an error in my configuration? Why is 10.20.0.108 not available? Best regards, Rafal.

size of netinst iso

Hi. I was wanting to set up a centos 6 virtual machine using the netinst iso image. I've done this for Centos 5 before but I was surprised to see that the size of the netinst iso had gone from +/- 10Mb to 227Mb. I was therefore wondering if I had the right file? If so, why did it get 22x bigger then the previous version? Regards, Johan

3TB usb drive won't mount

Hi list! I have a 3TB usb drive with an NTFS filesystem on it, that I can't mount.: [bent@bnlaptop ~]$ sudo /sbin/mount.ntfs-3g /dev/sdb1 /mnt Failed to read vcn 0xf28: Input/output error Failed to mount '/dev/sdb1': Input/output error NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g. /dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation for more details. On a Win7 machine there are no problems and chkdsk can't find anything wrong with the filesystem. I can mount 1TB drives using ntfs-3g without problems, so the driver doesn't seem to be the issue. I've tried both CentOS6.2 and Fedora16 with the same result.
