Tomcat5 with Oracle/Sun jdk on CentOS 5.8

I know this question could be asked on tomcat or possibly other mailing lists, but I'm hoping I can get some help here instead of joining yet another list. I'm running tomcat5 on CentOS 5.8. I'm trying to setup Oracle/Sun java rather than icedtea. I've installed the latest jdk 1.7 and setup alternatives on centos for java and javac: # java -version java version "1.7.0_03" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_03-b05) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 22.1-b02, mixed mode) I've also set /etc/tomcat5/tomcat5.conf to point JAVA_HOME to this jdk. I'd be willing to try jdk 1.5 or 1.6 if that is the fix, but I'm doubting that's the fix. I'm also not sure where tomcat5 set JRE_HOME. Been searching and can't find it. NFS - Strage Problem

Hi Dear List, i am experiencing strange problem with NFS, they is CentOS 6.2 x86_64 machines. One CentOS is sharing two directories (following) /etc 192.168.0.41(rw,sync,no_root_squash) /var/named/master 192.168.0.41(rw,sync,no_root_squash) nfs is started on server side there are proper entries in fstab at client side for both shares. however server is able to mount "/etc" alright but not "/var/named/master" any idea ? why that. Hello Centos users! I'm doing a Centos 6 desktop oriented remix called Stella. hack / spam/ probe /attack

so last night all my servers were severely probed and they tried to violate me (lol) the attack was so egregious I decided to contact the isp for that ip. Telepacific. The ip has some google searches that point to a few spam and a few attacks...So i assume a compromised server. So I sent them the info and said it must be a hacked server (the ip is on their business network) they responded ' you are not a customer and we cannot by law discuss a customer with you' They wanted me to contact my datacenter so they could look into it. I responded and told them the info again and they basically said it is up to my isp or datacenter to deal with it and to basically 'go away' that was my first attempt to notify an isp about a hacker/hacked computer on their servers....did not go so well. Is that the way they all deal with these issues? was not expecting that from the isp

Installation of CentOS 6 on KVM - Hangs

Greetings- I'm attempting to install CentOS-6 x86_64 to a virtual machine running via KVM on a Proxmox 1.9 system. The specs are 4x CPUs, 4GB RAM, and 160GB HDD. Installation proceeds fine using either minimal or netinstall CDs until installation of the selinux or qla2xx-firmware RPMs. At this point, the installation hangs, and never completes. I'm unable to see what is going on 'under the hood' on another TTY as the console does not appear to be accepting my CTL-ALT-Fx commands either. I have also tried installing using the full bin DVD1, but the initial installation errors out immediately noting the yum package cannot be read from source disk/etc. And yes, I have checked the MD5s on all downloaded ISOs. I can readily duplicate this. Any thoughts or pointers on the cause and/or solution? Thanks! --Tim

VMWare Issue

Ok. I run several linux distro's via vmware on top of my windows 7 machine. Currently have an Ubuntu 32-bit 10.4 guest for work. An Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit for misc stuff. Also an OEL 6.2 guest running an oracle database. I just installed CentOS 5.6 32-bit and I can't get the display to work right. When it first boots, the screen is very small and almost impossible to select the username field and log in. Once I log in if I de-select full screen and then re-select full-screen it updates to the correct size. I've installed vmware tools three times now. Inside the centos guess I set my resolution to 1920x1200, which matches my windows 7 machine as well as the resolution I run the other linux guests at. I set the monitor to "generic 1920x1200 LCD" because my monitor type isn't detected. (Samsung P2770H) Video adapter is set to vmware. (Actual device is an ATI HD 6950) Anyone have any ideas?

Setting overcommit_memory=2 kills system

Hello, In general I am in the habit of turning off memory overcommit because I believe it's a bad thing in a multi-user environment. This was never a problem on rhel5 systems, but on rhel6, I am having issues. When I try to set overcommit_memory=2, my system locks up. It basically behaves as if the memory is all used up... I see the same behavior on centos6 or rhel6. 6.2 minimal install NIC driver issue

I tried to upgrade one user's system, a Dell Optiplex GX620, and yum got a GPF. After *much* grief, I finally gave up, and rebuilt the system. Or, rather, I'm trying to. First problem: I did a minimal install from the graphical installer - I don't know if that's relevant - but when it boots, it does *not* install the NIC driver, tg3, on boot. I've got eth0 defined in /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistant-net.rules, I made an /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0, and it's onboot, and in /etc/sysconfig/network, that says yes. As soon as I *manually* modprobe tg3, the network comes up. I'm still trying to solve the libpython2.6 update that GPFs.... I haven't had this on anyone else that was getting the 2.6.32-220.17 update.... mark

We have a 2-node Oracle RAC that keeps getting the following error: kernel: nfs: RPC call returned error 88 The storage being mounted is netapp. We don't see any errors/issues on the storage itself or the switches this client is connecting thru. The NFS network is a 2-interface ( 2 x 1Gb UTP) bond which shows no errors of any kind. We are mounting with the following mount options: rw,noac,nointr,bg,hard,timeo= 600,wsize=32768,rsize=32768,nfsvers=3,tcp This problem sometimes hits the OCR votedisk shares and causes the instance to crash. These systems were upgraded to 5.6 back in January. Currently running 2.6.32-300.4.1. Thanks for any info,

Postfix will not start due to permission errors on CentOS 6.2 x86

Hello everyone, I cannot get the Postfix service to start on my pristine copy of CentOS 6.2 (installed straight from a DVD, and 6.2 directly, not 6.0 with upgrades...not thatit should matter). Anyway, I copied over /var/spool/mail to this system by using tar, as well as /etc/services and /etc/passwd, etc. Now, it doesn't want to start. I get permission errors like: postfix/master: warning: /usr/libexec/postfix/pickup pid 2006 exit 1 postfix/master:warning /usr/libexec/postfix/pickup: bad command startup -- throttling postfix/pickup: fatal: scan_dir_push: open directory maildrop: permission denied warning: the postfix sendmail command has set-uid root file permissions warning: or the command is run from a set-uid root process warning: the Postfix sendmail command must be installed without set-uid root file permissions Now, I Googled these errors, and didn't see any good specific help for CentOS. So, I did a yum erase postfix, which also erased dependencies. After I did that, I erased the /etc/postfix directory. I then reinstalled postfix with all the dependencies...and got the same errors. Then I googled the CentOS mailing list for help...nothing that applied to me turned up that I saw. I'm stumped. Does anyone have any ideas what the issue could be? OT: Rewrite part of a message with rsyslog

Hi all, Sorry for the off-topic, but I have not found how to do this. I have installed a centos6 server to act as a syslog receiver. I need to rewrite all messages that comes from one server. For example a part of the message is: "27April2012 10:33:44 172.1.2.2 data >". Sometimes between 27April2012 and 10:33:44 comes with one white space, sometimes with two, etc. I need to normalize this log to use only one white space between all fileds until ">" character. Somebody knows how can I do this??

Problem building latest Courier-authlib on CentOS4

mysql secure installation and multi mysqld

If you adjust the my.cnf file to make separate instances of mysql..... How would you go through the mysql secure installation? Is is possible or must it all be done manually for each one? is it possible to make each one of those instances a replicate/slave of a different master (thus a backup mysql server in a way?) working on this now, but having issues getting it to work. (centos 6)

Ok, did some experiments. Here's the scoop. You will need a live USB key of CentOS 6 with a persistence layer (overlay) and the EPEL gdisk package installed to make this thing boot. On a system with Chameleon already installed, boot the CentOS 6 install media. Installing Chameleon without OSX is an adventure that I've not done, so a 'testing' OSX install (10.6) with the Chameleon bootloader installed was used; once Chameleon is in the EFI boot partition in theory you can blow away the HFS+ OSX filesystem, but I've not tried it. This involves partitioning the disk as GPT, and there are numerous howtos out there for many motherboards and laptops; the key is to get Chameleon in the MBR and the EFI boot partition properly created, set up with a protective MBR, and populated. Install to the free space on the system, using a /boot of about 500MB, swap space to taste, and other filesystems as you like. When the install prompts for bootloader installation location, you DO NOT want to install to the MBR (Chameleon is there); rather, install it to the /boot partition (on my test system this was /dev/sda3). Finish the installation. It won't yet be bootable. Now, boot your liveUSB stick. When you get your desktop, pull up a terminal and become root. At the root prompt, invoke gdisk just like you would fdisk, making sure to get the right disk device and partition. The command set for gdisk is virtually identical to fdisk. Use 'p' to list the partitions; you'll see your /boot as a partition type of 'EF00' as set by parted in the installer. You want to change that partition type to '0700' instead. The bootable partition must remain the small EFI boot partition of type EF00. You can name the partitions with the 'c' command; I encourage this. Use the 'w' to write out the GPT when done, and shut down. Remove the CentOS 6 liveUSB and reboot. Chameleon should automatically pick up the 'Linux' system in its bootsplash. Now, it may be possible to get parted to make the /boot partition to be type 0700 instead of EF00; didn't try that, since I know gdisk will do it correctly. As I was using a Dell Inspiron 640m, I used a Chameleon boot CD for a Dell Latitude D620 to good effect; you can find that on insanelymac.com. That particular Chameleon install includes a Dell logo and such, and may be some different from your particular Chameleon install. I have not tried this with a drive larger than 2TB; google for 'Chameleon bootloader EFI 2TB' to see the progress in this area. In theory this would allow a BIOS booting machine to boot directly on a 2TB+ drive using GPT without having EFI or variant in the BIOS. Hi, I'm looking for the ldirectord package but can't find it. Previously this was available as "heartbeat-ldirectord" and nowadays it is built as an independent package from "resource-agents" however neither seems to be available either in core centos 6 or epel. Where did it go? Regards, Dennis

OSS DSP sound card input on CentOS 6.2?

Hello everyone, I'm streaming audio on CentOS 5.8 with no problem, even on a cheap sound card using DarkIce as the input tool. For the input under CentOS5, I use: device = /dev/dsp # OSS DSP soundcard device for the audio input But under CentOS 6.2, there is no such device. I see /dev/snd, and it has: controlC0 hwC0D2 midiC0D1 pcmC0D0p pcmC0D2p pcmC1D0p seq controlC1 hwC1D0 midiC0D2 pcmC0D1c pcmC0D3p pcmC1D1p timer hwC0D0 midiC0D0 pcmC0D0c pcmC0D2c pcmC1D0c pcmC1D2c But nothing that looks OSS-ish to me. cpuspeed causing high load average?

On a new server's CentOS5 install, with nothing in the way of applications running yet, I noticed that the load average was sitting between 2 and 5 all the time, even though top told me CPU was 100% idle. Eventually I found that stopping the "cpuspeed" subsystem allowed the load average to drop down to near zero, as I would expect it to be. I have the default /etc/sysconfig/cpuspeed with no customizations. Is the above behaviour expected? It seems wrong to me. Is cpuspeed broken? I did notice that with cpuspeed running, the CPUs were running at their minimum frequency of 1.6GHz, and after stopping the cpuspeed service they went up to their maximum speed of 2.8GHz. The system has a pair of E5660 Xeons, which Linux reports as 24 CPUs! Our backup mail server (which I have just re-configured) tries to contact the primary mail server, and fails. True bond howto for Centos 6

Hi all, Read many posts on the subject. Using 802.3ad. Few problems; Cannot ping some hosts on the network, they are all up. Cannot resolve via DNS which is one of the hosts that I cannot ping, internal nor external DNS hosts. Unplugging the NICS and plugging them back in will then not allow pining if the default d=gateway. When cold booting it somewhat works, some hosts are pingable while others are not. When restarting the network service via /etc/init.d/network, nothing is pingable. Excluding ConsoleKit in kickstart

Hi, I'm working on automating virtual machine installs using kickstart files and virt-install. The problem I have is that these kickstart installations install different packages than a minimal manual install. While I got rid of some of them I can't seem to prevent ConsoleKit from getting installed. I put "-ConsoleKit" in the packages section and later also added packages that require it but in the end it is still getting installed. Any ideas what I could do to stop it from being installed? Nothing in el5 depends on the qt4-4.2.x that ships with el5. It's an old, rotten, and completely pointless package. Nothing of any interest could be build with it for years now, probably never ever was it of any use to anyone. I replaced it with a rebuild of qt4-4.6.2-20 from el6. This gives me a common and useable base for both el5 and el6. That could be a sensible approach for a krita.el5 package, too. -Michael

BackupPC FAQ? Backups Apparently Working, but Web Interface Shows Nothing

BackuPC host is CentOS 6.2. Just one windows XP client. SMB backups appear to be working; there is data in the backup directory tree, including a subdir named for the client, in which I can manually view individual files that have been backed up. Now trying to use the web interface. Apache lets me log in, but the status screen shows nothing. Hosts screen says: This status was generated at 5/14 16:50. Pool file system was recently at 41% (5/14 16:43), today's max is 41% (5/14 01:00) and yesterday's max was 42%. Presumably, this means it sees the backup directory, since it accurately shows space available. Still, it says 0 hosts have been backed up. The SourceForge BackupPC Wiki says to check Selinux setup; it is disabled. What next? Thanks.

Persistent Kernel Parameters in GRUB

Greetings- I have a few custom kernel parameters being passed to a CentOS box via the /boot/grub/grub.conf file. However, if there is a kernel update, and grub.conf is regenerated, how do I ensure my custom parameters are: a. left in place on the older kernels b. added to the new kernel? I would think this should go in /etc/sysconfig/grub but I'm just not finding any documentation or examples of this in my searches. Could anyone offer a pointer? --Tim

CentOS 6, Raid 1, and LVM

I'm in the process of rebuilding one of my machines and I've been using Raid 1 with LVM on a CentOS 5 OS. I'm trying to get my ducks in a row to move to CentOS 6. However, I can't seem to locate and on the instructions/tutorials that show how to duplicate my Raid 1 LVM environment running CentOS 6. I saw the 'Partionable Raid 1 on CentOS 5 and 6', but it stopped before the LVM was introduced. Can I use those instructions, but add the LVM during the graphic installation? I would like to use dnsmasq to cache nameserver query results, and I have set dhcp to prepend the 127.0.0.1 name-server to the list of nameservers. dnsmasq would then automatically exclude the localhost as a name server and use all the others from the list provided by dhcp. But it was too nice to be true, because NetworkManager was there, ready to mess up anything I try to do, including the list of name servers that dhclient puts in /etc/resolv.conf. Is there really no way to convince that idiotic piece of software that it suffered too much brain damage in order for it to manage even a simple eth0 interface, and that dhclient can properly take care of the resolver configuration by itself ? Or do I have to turn it off entirely ? Is there a better way to have dhclient write the list of DNS servers, that dnsmasq could then use ? Thank you, Timothy Madden

Floating VIP...

Hi, right now I am using only one external server as a gateway for the internal servers. I would like to enable a fail-over on a second server. To implement the floating VIP, should I use heartbeat+pacemaker? Or is there something more "lightweight"? Basically, I just need server2 up the VIP when server1 is down, and server2 down the VIP when server1 is back up (or server 1 does not up the VIP seeing server2 has it already). Thx, JD

Geographic filtering for Sendmail on CentOS 5

I tried to google, but find no directions for configuring this. I would like to 1) limit greylisting only for messages that come from other countries 2) give higher spam level to these messages (preferably only for certain receiving email addresses) I already have installed geoip.x86_64 (1.4.6-1.el5.rf). How to proceed? Or should I move to CentOS 6 for this? - Jussi

problems with luci on CentOS 6.2

Hello, I have a 5 node cluster. virtsrv1n1 virtsrv2n2 virtsrv3n3 virtsrv4n4 virtsrv5n5 From Luci I am unable to manage virtsrv3n3 machine. Luci is unable to reboot it for example and if I select the node properties it shows me no status for Cluster Daemons for this specific node. openLDAP under CentOS-6

I've been hard hit by the lack of CentOS-6 documentation mentioned in another thread. The openLDAP setup has been changed completely between CentOS 5 and 6, and I haven't been able to find any reasonably coherent instructions explaining how to upgrade. If anyone knows of such a document I should be most grateful to learn of it. Actually I have openLDAP working (though unencrypted) with my CentOS-5 data after a series of more or less random steps. But I can't work out how to set the password for the web interface at <server>/phpLDAPadmin . Again, if anyone can tell me how to do this I shall be most thankful. Allow updates but not upgrades

Hi. At the moment it seems my machines just update to the latest current release . I install a 6.0 machine and run yum update , and next thing its 6.2 . I have a requirement where I need machines to only upgrade to even numbered sub releases eg: 6.0 , 6.2, 6.4 and only on my approval. But will allow updates within a given release. How can I achieve this ? If I sync the repositories for eg: 6.0 , 6.2, 6.4 separately in Spacewalk and only allow access to the ones I want to give access to, would that work ? Thanks G

xulrunner 1.9.2.26 available in repackaged form for use with legacy programs

I have re-packaged xulrunner 1.9.2.26 for CentOS 5 for use with older applications which can't be run with xulrunner 10.0.4. I created 'compatibity' RPMs that can be safely installed alongside xulrunner 10.0.4. I needed it to run the Evergreen 2.1 and 2.2 Staff Clients at our local library. The RPMs are available in the Deepwoods Software repo at the URL: ftp://ftp.deepsoft.com/pub/deepwoods-repo/. We have several DELL servers run under CENTOS 5. I check server spec and found some servers expansion slot say PCIE and some say PCIE generation 2. when is the o.s. considered to be at a certain minor version? Or, is it safe to apply only certain package updates from the next release version?

Two related questions about the minor release numbers (e.g. the 'x' in 5.x or 6.x) : 1) What constitutes the o.s. being at a particluar minor release? Typically, when you install you are getting a package set available from a specific minor release number. But what minor release is the o.s. at if I just update the centos-release package, and no other package? Typically, a 'yum update' is said to take your whole package set to the latest minor release. But what minor release is the o.s. if you just update certain packages (instead of taking all avaailable updates)? 2) Can I apply package updates made in a minor release greater than my current release without detriment to the integrity of the o.s.? E.g. Suppose all my packages are at versions delivered in v5.6. Suppose also, that I have a package xyz installed, and that an update to it was made available in v5.8. Can I upgrade xyz to the updated version from 5.8 without updating other packages (except for any dependencies xyz has) to the versions available in v5.8? How to prevent virtual machines running twice on the disk images?

I use KVM on two identical centos5 hosts. I can live migrate the virtual machines from one to the other and it works great. Once I do this, I can see VM definitions on both hosts using virt-manager or virsh list --all On one machine the VM is running, on the other it reports "shut off". The disk images are accessible to both host machines and I want to have only one running a the time (of course). If the VM locks up, I could by mistake think that the machine is not running and try to start it on the wrong host. My question is, how can I prevent host A from starting a "shut off" VM that actually has been migrated to host B? The VM could actually be running on any another host. It could also have been crashed. The most simple solution would be some sort of lock file placed next to the disk image location, so seen by all hosts. But perhaps there is another way of working with virt-manager that I am not aware of? Theo

Cyrus-imapd update from 2.2.12 to 2.3.16

We are trying to move our mail store from a host running cyrus-imapd 2.2.12 under CentOS-4 to one running 2.3.16 under CentOS-6. The current host is a 32 bit architecture. The new host is 64 bit. We have followed the update guide found at: http://www.cyrusimap.org/docs/cyrus-imapd/2.3.16/install-upgrade.php The steps we followed were: 1. Install cyrus-imapd et al on the new host. 2. Modify /etc/cyrus.conf and /etc/imapd.conf to suit our requirements. 3. On the old host dump the mailbox.db in flat format using /var/lib/cyrus-imapd/ctl_mboxlist -d > mboxlist.txt 4. Copy the mboxlist.txt file and the mail spool from the old to the new system 5. Run SELinux restorecon -fr on /var/spool/imap to set the correct contexts and ownership. 6. Load mailbox.db from mboxlist.txt using cat mboxlist.txt | /usr/lib/cyrus-imapd/ctl_mboxlist -u 7. Run /usr/lib/imapd-cyrus/reconstruct -rfg user 8. Run /usr/lib/imapd-cyrus/reconstruct -G user 9. Run /usr/lib/imapd-cyrus/quota -f 10. Start saslauthd and cyrus-imapd services. All the transferred mailboxes are seen and the imapd configuration data seems correct. The problem is that the quotas reported for each mailbox tree do not seem to aggregate under 2.3 as they did on 2.2. So, for example a user with an overall allocation of 500Mb reporting 70% utilization for the INBOX on the 2.2.13 version reports 3% on the 2.3.16 server even though the contents of the mailbox trees are identical. It seems that the new version calculates quota only for the INBOX itself, and not for all of the sub-directory contents. Is this a change in behaviour for 2.3 vice 2.2 or do I have a problem? Konqueror tree view in CentOS 6

I believe this is because some plugin has not been ported to the new version of Konqueror. Please, is there a nice way to install the old Konqueror and its plugins on my CentOS 6 ? Hello listmates, I have a machine that is running Centos 5.8. I am trying to install MediaWiki 1.19 on it and that requires PHP 5.3 which I got from the combination of the Remi and EPEL repositories. Logging file activity

On windows I use filemon, it tells me every file operation and its result. I have search high and low, but cannot seem to find an alternative. Disabling stock firewall and SELinux for ISPConfig

I have been reading a tutorial on configuring and securing a CentOS 6.2 machine: http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect-server-centos-6.2-x86_64-with-apache2-isp… This tutorial bases the configuration on an application called ISPConfig. I am not sure that I like the idea of disabling the stock firewall and SELinux as the tutorial suggests, even with all the troubles that SELinux has given me in the past. What do those wiser than myself think about this? For some background, I will be setting up a rather bland server for serving a few websites. Thy will all be served via Apache, coded in PHP. I am concerned about correctly configuring a safe firewall for the system. So any advice particular to that would be much appreciated. Thank you! Dotan Cohen

Qt 4.8.1. on CentOS 5

Hi, Has anyone here tried the latest Qt version - 4.8.1 - on a CentOS 5 system? I've tried, and also failed - most programs will crash during some very fundamental operation, like drawing windows or something. This only happens when GUI Style is set to "Desktop Settings (Default)" (when running GNOME) in the Qt Configuration, though, so it must have something to do with the Gtk style engine. I suspect it would also happen with "GTK+", but I can't actually switch to that setting, as the configurator itself will crash when I select it. Spam, fail2ban and centos

Been working on my anti-spam centos mailserver for a while now and thought I would share fail2ban's help. I installed fail2ban a few weeks back. It was tough to get it working properly but pretty much working now. Although it works fine for brute force, I thought I would run it pretty tough against spammers. I started with a regular mail server, my old one, that is horrendously pounded daily by spammers and has been for years. I installed centos 6 and used postfix to replace my 5.x and sendmail system. As I added some smtpd restrictions I noticed an immediate drop in spam getting through...til the next day when spam from new sources arrived. Then I would add more smtpd restrictions and the same thing happened. I get the feeling that they go for low hanging fruit and when they see that stop, they go a step higher. Eventually ran out of smtpd restrictions and still a lot getting through. I used spamassassin to tag mails, but not delete..I wanted to find out who it was and stop them, not delete them. Then I started adding rbl rejects. That too had the same effect..a day with little spam, then next day a whole new set would hit me. Then I added a ton of rbls like spamhaus, etc....Even apews. That really stopped what was getting through and my mail logs went from 30 MB a day to 5MB (this was for a one email address server, one that is seldom used at all). 5MB of rejects, rarely would one ever get through. I wanted to limit those log sizes, so with fail2ban I decided to start banning any ip that made more than 2 attempts to send mail of they were rejected by a rbl, bad helo, or non existent recipient. Bascially all the rejects that my smtpd restrictions were using. First day, much less attacks, went to less than 1MB log files. Then starting the second day and every day there after the attacks started.. Each day 1 or two IPs now send a concurrent blast to the site, just a connect but not trying to send anything..then that IP goes for sasl auth, but never sends a user/pass....then it sends an encrypted pass...then it is finally taken out by fail2ban. Also, the attacks of bad addresses have now greatly increased. I am now banning 1,000 IPs a day with fail2ban (I have it set for a 5 day ban to test it)....but each day 1,000 new ones go after it. I have logs going back 4 years (logwatch) and can definitely see that these newer ips were not used before. I think I made them mad....lol Working on adding some kind of regex to fail2ban to look for concurrent attacks. I find it rather interesting, after analyzing my spam, how it seems to fall into about 10 or 12 different formats and that is about it... I found it very interesting that as I really started rejecting that places like ovh.net suddenly cropped up pounding me. Vocus, constant contact, etc...really started going in overdrive once I had it set up. I am starting to see a real pattern to all this. I would love to see someone do a case study on spam attacks. Their system seems well honed to scale up with your defenses until they finally have to 'appear' on their real computers like the ovh.net servers, and many more hosts, and through legitimate (ha ha) spammers like vocus, constant contact, etc. Here is the logwatch from today for fail2ban and postfix if you want to see how much I get each day http://www.politicalgateway.com/postfix.txt http://www.politicalgateway.com/fail2ban.txt this is for a one email address mailserver, that never had other addresses used. It was a somewhat popular site for candidates for a few years, but has been closed down for about 3 years. Usually not one email gets through for days, spam that is. And those reports are after about 4 days of long term ip bans. My log file size is now about 1MB, down from 5MB thanks to fail2ban. Quite an experience. Going to work on consolidating all those banned ips and see if I can find a 'iptables drop' solution for most of them. Fail2ban really helps out in the number of times these bozos try to send a mail. Instead of 100 times, they get 2 off then banned. That has really helped the server out. Can't sue anyone for the can-spam act, but places like vocus.com and the like....thinking of suing them for harassment and DDoS attacks...maybe then they will stop sending me their legitimate spam.

webmin and DNS configuration on CentOS 6.2

Hello listmates, I have two seemingly identical (in this reglard, at least) machine - both of them are running CentOS 6.2 with bind (bind-chroot) installed. I used webmin to edit the DNS configuration. One one of them it seems to work fine, on the other I get messages akin to the following: Failed to create master zone : Failed to replace /var/named/chroot/etc/named.conf with /var/named/chroot/etc/named.conf.webmintmp.13214 : Device or resource busy >From what I can tell, the file /var/named/chroot/etc/named.conf.webmintmp.13214 never even gets created to begin with. Has anyone experienced that? Does anyone know what the issue is? Thanks. Boris.

eth1 - Centos 6.2 - changing names of network interfaces

Everyone, Can anyone refer me to a tutorial as to how to rename the network cards, ie I have one that ended up being system-eth3, that I want to be system-eth1? I am setting up a new CentOS 6.2 system that I plan to use as a gateway and e-mail server. The original machine had only one nic card, and to my surprise the vendor did not have a 1000/100/10 card that would fit in the pci-e slot. I ordered a pci-e network card, and while waiting for it to arrive I purchased a Sabrent usb 1000/100/10 to finish my development. I was able to get CentOS 6.2 to recognize the usb ethernet adapter which had been assigned system-eth1, but I could not get data to go through it (in or out). The pci-e network card came in, and after it was installed, and upon the next boot it was assigned system-eth2. I tried to delete the usb eth1 and reassign the pci-e to eth1, but have managed to really mess things up. I deleted references to eth1 and eth2 in : /etc/sysconfig/networking /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts hoping that the next boot would reassign the pci-e network card as eth1, but now the system will not even recognize the new card. Is there any way to reset the numbering sequences of network cards so that I can have the the desired names. I wish now I would have left it alone, and just changed references to eth1 to eth2 in my iptables firewall. Thanks much, Greg Ennis

Centos 6 - x11vnc auto probing to port 5903

Hi all, I was at one time able to get x11vnc to start on 5900 but for some reason its listening on port 5903. Here is what the logs say; -- snippet X display :0.0 -- snippet The VNC desktop is: hostname:3 Why is the VNC desktop going to 3? I was working on 5900 previous to a reboot, unsure what changed, but something obviously has. - aurf

I am doing some dev items with GSteamer and CentOS 6.2 The latest GStreamer has dependencies on glib 2.24 Is there a CentOS+ or something out there that would use this later version? Any chance upstream will be moving to such a version. Thanks, Jerry

nfsen daemon dies for unknown reason

Hello, I am using nfsen 1.3.5 (http://nfsen.sourceforge.net/) on CentOS 5.8 x86_64 (running as a VM on a KVM Host). For those not knowing it, nfsen is using php and perl and it allows graphing and analysis of (Cisco routers) netflow data captured using nfdump. Often (about once a day) nfsen crashes for unknown reason. For example: # /data/nfsen/bin/nfsen status NfSen version: 1.3.5 NfSen status: Collector for (pen thi) port 9995 is running [2688]. nfsen daemon: pid: [2690] died for unknown reason. We are running nfsen by including in /etc/rc.local: /data/nfsen/bin/nfsen start Note that nfdump 1.6.4 (used by nfsen) is running flawlessly, never crashing. When restarting: # /data/nfsen/bin/nfsen start Starting nfcapd:(pen thi) Error( Port: 9995 ): a collector with pid[2688] is already running Starting nfsend. nfsen and nfdump were compiled from source. Note that I haven't had such issues with any other software, except nc (netcat) which would also hang in the same way. After many troubles and unsuccessful efforts to resolve, I was forced to use socat instead; socat has been running flawlessly for months. (This might be a different issue though.) Could someone please try to identify the source of these problems and suggest a solution? I've tried to find more details on the problem (see below). Equivalent RHEL package for CentOS httpd package?

I'm trying to find out if a particular RedHat patch has been ported to CentOS yet. In particular, this vulnerability: CVE-2011-3607 According to this: https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2012-0323.html it has been patched as of httpd-2.2.3-63.el5_8.1.x86_64.rpm Now, in the latest CentOS repository, I find httpd-2.2.3-63.el5.centos.1.x86_64.rpm Is this the same (or later) release? Incomplete host name resolution

Hello I happen to have two network interfaces on my new, up-to-date, CentOS 6.2, named eth0 and virbr0 (3 of them if I include the lo interface). However the system APIs like getaddrinfo() only return the address for the virbr0 interface (which was created by the CentOS installation), when I would like to have them both. Even if I give the configured eth0 address explicitly to getnameinfo(), it can not perform the reverse lookup to my hostname, and returns a string with the same numeric IP address given as argument. I also can not get the list of samba name aliases for my host name. I can happily ping my host from a different computer on the eth0 network, so the nmb service binds on eth0 and works as expected. I have installed and configured smb, nmb and winbind services, and I have added 'wins' to /etc/nsswitch.conf, so my hosts line there looks like: hosts: files wins mdns4_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns Is there something I should do for wins name service to return all IP addresses ? Hi, I am converting a system to use Berkeley DB for file access instead of ISAM files, but need to be able to examine the data in the files while testing. Does anyone know whether the DB SQL from Russian Fedora Free Updates for CentOS 6 (RHEL 6) (libdb-sql-devel-5.2.36-5.el6.R.x86_64.rpm) will work with the version of Berkeley Data Base on CentOS and RH 6? I have two hosts with drbd: kmod-drbd83-8.3.8-1.el5.centos drbd83-8.3.8-1.el5.centos and kernel (CentOS 5.7): 2.6.18-308.4.1.el5 After a recent upgrade of kernel I have had two sitiuations when my ext3 filesystem on /dev/drbd0 became read-only. I've checked disks with smartctl -t long, they are ok. There are no messages with disks problems in /var/log/messages | dmesg. 2 systems, can't connect to apache on one

I have 2 systems, both with the same version of CentOS installed. Both have identical versions of apache running and identical httpd.conf files. From a third system, if I point my browser at system 1, I can connect to it with no problem. But if I point my browser at system 2, I cannot connect. There is nothing logged anywhere that I can find on system 2 - not in the apache error log or access log, or the audit log, or anywhere. I tried disabling selinux, but that did not help. I can ping and ssh into system 2, so I know I have a route to it. It's like the request never reaches the server. Anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing this or what I could check to help me diagnose the problem? TIA! -larry

Can only login as root

I have a strange problem on a CentOS-5.8 machine. I can only login as root. If I try to login with one of the user's names, it hangs for a long time. I thought it hung forever, but I just found that I do login after "su tim" after 5 minutes. I've added irqpoll option to kernel line in grub.conf but it hasn't helped. I've checked options in bios but haven't found anything interesting. Any clues what to do next? Upgrading PHP and PHP53 on CentOS5 - Progress/Problem w/ Squirrelmail

Greetings In the attempt to upgrade the technology stack on CentOS 5 from stock PHP to PHP53 I have made some progress. Much thanks to all respondents, especially Jesus. One repository that provides a complete set of builds and seems to fulfill both PHP and PHP53 requirements is the IUS one: http://iuscommunity.org/ Repos here: http://dl.iuscommunity.org/pub/ius/stable/Redhat/5/i386/repoview/ One reference to several discussions covering this topic are available here: https://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=30881 Using the IUS PHP53 rpms allows for the rpm re-installation of drupal6, phpmyadmin, and squirrelmail. However, with Squirrelmail there is one critical issue. Via one of its plugins, Squirellmail provides an html email editor. With the upgrade to PHP53, the editor continues to work. However, the html email that is composed using this functionality is received empty. Reverting back to the original CentOS PHP packages re-enables this functionality. Is there a solution to this issue? Much thanks. One (secondary) thing. In order to support yum updates from the IUS repository, how do I load the appropriate file? Much thanks. A new file generated today is also 2.4MB but via NFS its 66MB, even when logged in to the server locally its 66MB! You hinted to cache and so I looked around my Raid controller settings, specifically write through vs write back. I will change it from write back to write through later tonight and report back. The pattern is all files new files look to be 66MB until some time later. I do have a 4GB mem cache on this Raid controller (Areca). - aurf

My NFS server is hardware Raided with a volume stripe size of 128K were the volume size is 20TB. My NFS clients are the same distro as the server being Centos. Is this due to my stripe size? SELinux prevents my PHP script from sending mail

Hello all... I maintain an amateurish email list for my wife's website on my CentOS 6 server. Once-a-month, she sends mail to "mylistaddr(a)mydomain.com" and the /etc/aliases file redirects that to my script: mylistaddr: "| /usr/bin/php-cgi /var/www/html/mydomain/email-cgi.php" The script, in turn, reads the recipient addresses out of a DB and composes and sends the mails. This all worked great until this month's mailing. Now sendmail just bounces the mail back "554 5.3.0 unknown mailer error 255". When I see programs complaining about "unknown" conditions, I usually suspect SELinux first, and sure enough... setenforce 0 then everything works like a charm. I wonder what changed between last month and this month? Anyway, I checked the audit.log file and found the relevant AVC denials. I created a local policy (audit2allow) to circumvent the denials, which helpfully prevented the denial messages in audit.log. But the maillist script still fails identically as long as SELinux is enforcing. And now nothing shows up in audit.log. So SELinux is preventing sendmail from calling my maillist script and not reporting the reason. How do I go about figuring out what's broken and how to fix it? -Alan

OpenLDAP migration from Centos 5 to 6

I'm moving my home network server from a Dell server, which has been having some mysterious problems, to an HP MicroServer. Everything - MySQL, OpenVPN, email (dovecot), httpd, etc - except for openLDAP, which is taking more time than everything else put together. I haven't found any straightforward instructions on this anywhere. The official RedHat document <http://docs.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/6/html /Deployment_Guide/ch-Directory_Servers.html> doesn't really tell you what to do. Basically, I've saved the data on the old server with slapcat > /tmp/ldif and moved ldif to the new server . mysql-bin files - filling up the space.

Dear All Greetings, i am seeking help from guys with mysql knowledge. i can see lot of these files in mysql directory. And they are eventually filling up the space on the server. what these files are? some exists with very old time stamps. such as February 2012. can these be deleted? Firefox10-stuck with sync

Dear All, Since RHEL/Centos went to Firefox10, I have about 50 users who have sync-pop-ups. Does anyone knows a quick and very dirty way to get rid of sync all together? I searched the Mozilla Forum, but found no clean Linux-solution, without me having to log in to every account and run about:config. I was thinking like adding something to prefs.js I cannot believe Firefox included this kind of feature without a very big OFF-button. The world is twisted. Is nobody thinking of sysadmins these days? Strange situation with openssl and kernel

Hello, On a VM guest (running under KVM) with CentOS 5.8, I yesterday strangely got the following (see below). The server runs apache/php/squirrelmail/postfix/dovecot/openldap and it is a production server. Do you advise to do some particular file system checks or other settings? Any other advice? Such errors have not appeared in the past. down to the nitty gritty, mysql replication

Almost done with my centos handbook project on my server. Last two things are related, backups. Looking for anyone who feels like chiming in on mysql backups...this is what I am thinking at this point. Mysql backup system for all websites ---------------------------------------------------- Each website is on a separate server, each running mysql, no site is related to the others. A server will be built (VM) that will host mysql. I believe the way to do this is as follows... 1- make a separate instance of mysql on the backup server equal to the number of websites I am going to backup 2- set up each website's mysql to be a Master 3- set up each instance of mysql on the backup to be a slave to its website Master 4- run them all at the same time, replication from master to slave 5- on the backup / slave mysql instances run logs, back up by day, dump daily I believe, not sure, this will work. Not sure if a better way. The replication allows for a full and almost up to the second copy should a corruption happen on the Master. The daily log files and dumps on the backup server allow for rebuild due to hacker attack. The backup server handling the dumps prevents any issue with the website mysql and the web application. From there, amanda will grab those backup log and dumps to add to each site's file backups. And that is the logic of what I think I can do with this. Trying to back up multiple websites files, logs, and mysql. Amanda will do all but the mysql. sound right? This is the last big step before I start writing the chapters out for the book. Hope to get it done within a month or two after the backup system is done. any thoughts appreciated.
