Programs on/off on virtual host machine

been playing with my host machine and thought some might want to see what I have on and the full list of chkconfig I have installed desktop and x windows system to bring up a desktop when I want one with startx. I turned 'off' quite a bit and yum removed quite a bit. These set of programs still allow full use as a host so far, including the startx desktop. Always afraid to remove or disable something because you 'never know' what might happen. After two reboots this works. This is only the chkconfig list, there are other programs that do not list in chkconfig I guess, but this is just for chkconfig. standalone virtual host, no network file share and all that. Removing or disabling many of the programs like rpc stuff has seriously taken out a lot of the errors in the logs. The problem actually seems to be that GNOME desktop settings for font smoothing and hinting, as configured via Preferences->Fonts->Details.., are not honoured. I don't think I've configured anything special there, but apparently, I don't even get normal defaults... I can change the appearance to something better by editing ~/.fonts.conf, though, but I'm still not sure if I've been able to reproduce the exact settings of other programs. Thunderbird and Firefox 10 font rendering

Hi. I just upgraded to CentOS 5.8 and got Thunderbird and Firefox 10, and I regret it already... I find that reading texts in these new versions is much more straining to the eyes than it used to be, as something must have changed with the font rendering - simply put, all letters appears to have a yellowish halo or "ghost". I'm sure the colour is an optical illusion, but again, something appears to be off with the display - and it's not the fonts as such, as they are the same as the desktop defaults, and I don't see this in other applications. The problem is particularly bad in Thunderbird, but I think I see it in Firefox, too. Does anyone else experience this? we recently deployed some large XFS file systems with centos 6.2 used as NFS servers... I'm transitioning someone's quite old server [Debian] to a new CentOS6 host. All going pretty well. But they server up some functionality using CGI scripts via Apache that use something referred to on the Debian box as the www-mysql package? This a binary that executes HTML pages containing embedded SQL statements. Anyone know where the source for this can be found or if it has a more specific name? So we end up replacing the backend servers wholesale every few years, re-purposing the older generation for less demanding tasks. But, within the realm of hardware with compatible drivers there's not a whole lot of difference in the effort to copy a VM image or a hardware image with clonezilla or a similar approach. Hello there, since kernel update 2.6.32-220.4.1.el6, one of my USB external SATA drives is not mounting. With kernel 2.6.32-131.21.1.el6, it auto-mounts in GNOME desktop when I plug the disk. CentOS 6.2 software raid 10 with LVM - Need help with degraded drive and only one MBR

CentOS Community, I have a dedicated server with 4 hard drives in a RAID 10 software configuration running LVM. My OS is CentOS 6.2. Earlier today, I rebooted my system and my system did not come back online. I opened a ticket with my datacenter who informed me that one of my hard drives is no longer recognized by the bios and has failed. I was told that an OS reinstall was needed. I don't understand why a reinstall would be necessary when the drives are in RAID 10. Apparently when the datacenter did the initial OS install, they ONLY installed the MBR on one drive instead of all 4 leaving the other 3 drives unbootable. Is this a way to salvage this with a liveCD without having to reload the OS? This server is a very important mail server running OpenLDAP and MySQL. I figured maybe I could install the MBR using a liveCD which may fix the system. If an OS reload is the ONLY option, is there a way to reload it without touching the /var or /opt filesystems? (yes they were created as a seperate partition) however I am not sure if OpenLDAP or MySQL installs anything to /usr which I would be completely screwed... Please help

gdm in 6.2 missing keyboard menu?

I have a box running 6.0 that gives a keyboard layout menu via gdm when logging in. I've just installed a 6.2 box, but there is no keyboard layout menu I've found a bugzilla entry at: <https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=746923> which says that with gdm in 6.2, it now only shows keyboard layouts listed in /etc/sysconfig/keyboard However, I've added a list of keyboard layouts as suggested by that BZ, but I still don't get a keyboard menu. Software RAID1 with CentOS-6.2

Hello, Having a problem with software RAID that is driving me crazy. Here's the details: 1. CentOS 6.2 x86_64 install from the minimal iso (via pxeboot). 2. Reasonably good PC hardware (i.e. not budget, but not server grade either) with a pair of 1TB Western Digital SATA3 Drives. 3. Drives are plugged into the SATA3 ports on the mainboard (both drives and cables say they can do 6Gb/s). 4. During the install I set up software RAID1 for the two drives with two raid partitions: md0 - 500M for /boot md1 - "the rest" for a physical volume 5. Setup LVM on md1 in the standard slash, swap, home layout Install goes fine (actually really fast) and I reboot into CentoS 6.2. Next I ran yum update, added a few minor packages and performed some basic configuration. Now I start to get I/O errors on printed on the console. Run 'mdadm -D /dev/md1' and see the array is degraded and /dev/sdb2 has been marked as faulty. Okay, fair enough, I've got at least one bad drive. I boot the system from a live usb and run the short and long SMART tests on both drive. No problems reported but I know that can be misleading, so I'm going to have to gather some evidence before I try to return these drives. I run badblocks in destructive mode on both drives as follows badblocks -w -b 4096 -c 98304 -s /dev/sda badblocks -w -b 4096 -c 98304 -s /dev/sdb Come back the next day and see that no errors are reported. Er thats odd. I check the SMART data in case badblocks activity has triggered something. Nope. Maybe I screwed up the install somehow? So I start again and repeat the install process very carefully. This time I check the raid array straight after boot. mdadm -D /dev/md0 - all is fine. mdadm -D /dev/md1 - the two drives are resyncing. Okay, that is odd. The RAID1 array was created at the start of the install process, before any software was installed. Surely it should be in sync already? Googled a bit and found a post were someone else had seen same thing happen. The advice was to just wait until the drives sync so the 'blocks match exactly' but I'm not really happy with the explanation. At this rate its going to take a whole day to do a single minimal install and I'm sure I would have heard others complaining about the process. Anyway, I leave the system to sync for the rest of the day. When I get back to it I see the same (similar) I/O errors on the console and mdadm shows the RAID array is degraded, /dev/sdb2 has been marked as faulty. This time I notice that the I/O errors all refer to /dev/sda. Have to reboot because the fs is now readonly. When the system comes back up, its trying to resync the drive again. Eh? Any ideas what is going on here? If its bad drives, I really need some confirmation independent of the software raid failing. I thought SMART or badblocks give me that. Perhaps it has nothing to do with the drives. Could a problem with the mainboard or the memory cause this issue? Is it a SATA3 issue? Should I try it on the 3Gb/s channels since there's probably little speed difference with non-SSDs? Cheers, Kal

Is there a web-interface to dovecot under CentOS-6? I want to create a top-level folder (ie at the same level as Inbox) but this doesn't seem to be possible from KMail running on a remote Fedora-6 laptop. I was browsing through the dovecot wiki, and I saw some pictures which seemed to be from a dovecot GUI, but I could not find the name of this program. cron job not running

hello list, I am attempting to backup a centos 5.4 (x86_64) server running mysql with a cron job. NFS Selinux issues

I'm having a strange problem with selinux and the mounting of a nfs directory. I'm specifying the security context as part of the mount command, yet the security context still shows nfs. The mount shows what the security context should be: [root@clienthost ~]# mount serverhost:/usr/local on /usr/local type nfs4 (rw,context="system_u:object_r:usr_t:s0",hard,intr,addr=serverhost,clientaddr=clienthost) yet the directory permissions show the security context of nfs: [root@clienthost ~]# ls -dZ /usr/local drwxr-xr-x. root root system_u:object_r:nfs_t:s0 /usr/local My /etc/fstab entry is: serverhost:/usr/local /usr/local nfs context=system_u:object_r:usr_t:s0,rw,hard,intr 0 0 This is causing some issues with some of my scripts. Both the client and server are 6.2 servers. The client is a virtual image running on the server. restrict postfix to only certain users getting incoming mail

Perhaps I am trying to do the impossible. centos6, spamassassin, procmail, dovecot, postfix. Postfix, by default, accepts all incoming mail to any user listed in the shadow/passwd and alias files. I cannot find a way to stop that without manually blocking each non wanted user (like nobody, apache) without killing local delivery. For most of the users listed in those files, who cares. However for one, root, this is a massive issue. Root gets a lot of mail from errors on the system. Preventing local delivery (or through the alias file, delivery through root to another user) makes root never receive those important mails. Not preventing root from incoming mails means root(a)example.com can be slammed with spam. Local and external mail all seem to go through all of the programs (postfix, procmail, spamassassin, dovecot). Local delivery of mails is needed for root. What I would like is to just tell postfix to only allow incoming mail for user1 and user2 and reject all...but only from external sources, not locally sent mail. Postfix does seem to allow you to limit who can send mail out of the server though... I have 2 books on postfix here and spent many days online but I do not see the solution short of /dev/null or reject of all mail, local or external, of root. perplexed.

I am not quite sure if this issue relates to iptables, routing or Xen virtual machines. Too many variables for my simple mind, so I'm asking some advice :) This is my network setup: Internet --- eth2 + CentOS dom0 / firewall / router + eth1 (xenbr1) --- LAN with private IPs --- separate file server and workstations + eth0 (xenbr0) | DMZ network with public IPs --- CentOS6 domU web server Lets assume my dom0's eth2 public ip is 1.2.3.33 and my dmz network 11.22.33.96/255.255.255.224 . I have created NAT from my LAN with iptables. After this I mounted the NFS share from the file server (192.168.0.2). My problem: If my domU web server is connected to both LAN and DMZ using the two bridges xenbr0 and xenbr1, I can access the NFS share from the domU web server and everything else works as expected, except for one thing -- my workstations in the LAN cannot anymore access the web server: web pages do not open anymore and from the workstations I cannot ping the domU. If the web server domU is only connected to DMZ via xenbr0, the workstations can access it ok. Any advice what I am doing wrong and I could fix my setup? Regards, Peter

whcih mailing list for mail server issue?

Hello, First of all, thanks for the yum-cron config location, did not see that there. That helped get my yum updates to my root user folder. Second, I am not sure where to go with this one. I want to block emails coming in to the server to root@, etc. But not block the cron jobs (and other internal server setups) that send mail to root to be blocked. I am using postfix/dovecot,spamassassin, and procmail. The file from the logwatch is going through the spamassassin so I figure all 4 are going to deal with any internal and external mail sent to root. I can't see a way to say 'stop incoming mails to root' without killing the internal mail delivery use. In fact, I would really like only a few specified users to get incoming mail period, but allow all internal mail to do as it should. Which mailing list should I hit up. Dovecot does the delivery but is totally hooked up with postfix and the rest using maildir/. not sure where to go with this one.

getting yum-cron to send a mail

Hello, On my old centos 5 system I get updates from yum automatically, it sends a mail to root. on my new centos 6 things have changed and it has a thing called 'yum-cron' I have it on and it is working....except I can find no particular file where mailto might be added. The crontab is going to root, but yum-cron has nothing as far as a variable for this. yum-cron has no man page, no documents...not sure what to do on this one. Thinking about just adding 'mailto=root' in the daily and weekly cron job yum-cron has set. Again, it is definitely updating the server (did so this morning, added stuff to the yum log) but no mails. thanks bob

So far, one of our consultants has been handling it, but that costs money. At the moment the problem is that I configured a list with config_list, but the changes have not taken effect. VSftp, ssl/tls, slight issue with directory listings

Centos 6, stock installation, no additional repos added. vsftp works fine in regular mode, going to ssl I got issues. I get as far as 'directory listing' and it dies. It times out and disconnects. file: /etc/sysconfig/iptables-config added: IPTABLES_MODULES="ip_conntrack_ftp" (without this line, ftp normally fails, afraid it may be causing issues with the ssl) iptables -A INPUT -m state --state NEW -m tcp -p tcp --dport 21 -j ACCEPT again, normal ftp fine. vsftp file below are the additional commands I entered to get ssl/tls up and running. pam_service_name=vsftpd userlist_enable=YES tcp_wrappers=YES ssl_enable=YES implicit_ssl=yes <--- tried with and without this and the port 21 below listen_port=21 <-- see above allow_anon_ssl=NO force_local_data_ssl=NO <-- set this to yes so I can still test normal functions force_local_logins_ssl=NO ssl_tlsv1=YES ssl_sslv2=NO ssl_sslv3=NO rsa_cert_file=/etc/pki/tls/certs/vsftpd.pem ssl_ciphers=HIGH <-- this was added as I was using filezilla and it wanted different ciphers. without this it would have a tls fatal error, adding this absolved that issue. Now I have tried playing with the settings and in all cases when it can connect it dies at directory listing. Implicit ssl wants 990, but the listen_port directive can tell it to go to 21. Again, full connect, changes folders, dies at trying to display contents of initial folder. I have redone the pem a few times and even moved it in and out of the vsftpd folder just for kicks, no joy. I tried opening port 990 and that made no difference at all (even changing listen_port or leaving it commented out) so, cannot figure what is up. Most online notes are for non-centos 6 and/or generally follow this same set of commands. Most of the debug threads about this issue deal with plain connections and not tls/ssl. I can find no solution yet, has anyone out there secured their vsftp server and wanna throw me a bone? Only this and two other things prevent me from throwing out a nice video tutorial of how to go from a stock install to a fully armed and operational webserver, ssl everywhere, etc.... all nighter and no where with this one. At least not yet.

C6.2 on DELL E6520

Hi, I've installed Centos 6.2 x86_64 on a DELL E6520 and nearly everything works just fine. The only problem is that the system hangs after entering "reboot". I can see that several services get stopped, but after some seconds the screen is just black and nothing happens anymore. The weird thing is that "poweroff" always works just fine. Also, I should note that I'm using the NVIDIA binary graphics driver and have disabled the "Optimus" feature in the BIOS. The problem with "reboot" happens regardless if the NIVIDA driver is installed or not. Any ideas? Best regards, Bernd

Centos6: Boot from usb 3.0

Hi all, I'm booting Centos6 from a usb 3.0 stick. This works fine as long as the usb-stick is connected to a usb 2.0 port. Once I plug the the usb-stick into a blue usb 3.0 port centos fails on mounting the root filesystem. Any hints on that? Regards .....Volker

Hello, I have a couple of centos5 hosts at various offices connected with ipsec by ipsec-tools (racoon). It's a relatively straightforward configuration on ipv4, however I can't find any information how and even if it works in the same way with ipv6. What I've found is some references that it is better to use openswan on el5 and it indeed is standard on el6. It promises ipv6 support by default, however, I couldn't get it to even do phase 1 on el5 in the limited time I had available to test it. I've also found out that openswan is poorly documented not only on their site, but also in el6 manuals. So ... what are the general expiriences with ipsec on ipv6? Anyone has it running? Hi, I am trying to configure ssh/pam to use freeradius as one of the authentication sources on a C6 box. I have freeradius running on a separate box with 2 factor authentication. Using the radtest utility, I can successfully authenticate. My problem is that I do not understand how to configure pam to use radius as an auth source and be sure I am not opening a security hole in my systems. While googling, I have found several howto's that talk about how to do this using the pam_radius utility but the examples do not match what is found in /etc/pam.d/sshd. What I would like to accomplish is the following: 1. Allow logins using ssh keys. 2. If that fails, Allow login via radius. 3. if not on the local network disallow login via a regular user name and passwd. I think 3 might be able to be accomplished via a match statement in sshd.conf but I am not sure. Does anyone know how to do this in a secure way? I'm building my own openmpi packages derived from upstream SRPMs. Problem: The ones built with Intel's compiler can only be installed by force, because Intel doesn't register their provided libs with rpm. Any idea how this can be done? (Alternative ideas are appreciated as well -- as long as they don't read as: make Intel fix this.) -Michael

We just moved a user, who deals with a *lot* of data, to a new server, since his old NFS home directory was on a disk that had started showing problems. Now, i/o is about six times slower, my manager reports. After a fair bit of googling, I started looking at tc and ip, and found the following: from ip address show, first, on the old home directory server, eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast qlen 1000 then, on the new: eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc mq state UP qlen 1000 I've tried tc qdisc add dev eth0 mq pfifo_fast and tc qdisc add dev eth0 pfifo_fast and neither works. I've googled, and seen something about you can't set something with tc, because pfifo_fast is the hardwired default. Anyone know how I can reset this, or is there a package I can reinstall that would do that? mark

CentOS-5.7 SQLite-3.6.6 Ruby on Rails 3.1 Ruby-1.8.7 I have a situation wherein the version of SQLite-3 on CentOS-5 is too 'old' for the Ruby language sqlite3 DBMS adapter to successfully build against. I managed to obtain an rpm for ruby-1.8.7 but I cannot find one for sqlite-3.6.16 or later. Does anyone here have a lead on where such a beast, including the sqlite development headers, might be found? The problem is that you can't easily tell by looking at the connectors whether or not they're flakey. I've had positive experience with Caviar Black and Scorpio Black drives. The WD Green and Blue drives are built more cheaply than the Blacks (which have close to enterprise-grade construction). The dealer I buy drives from has told me that the Blacks have far lower return/defect rates. Of the approximately 30 2TB Blacks I have in RAID-6 service, I've only experienced two failures, which were handled quickly by the WD warranty program. It's interesting to note that while all the drive manufacturers are going back to 1 or 2-year warranties, the WD Black series remains at 5 years. A friend of mine has had a couple of strange problems with the RE (RAID) series of Caviars, which utilize the same mechanics as the non-RE Blacks. For software RAID, I would recommend that you stick with the non-RE versions because of differences in the firmware. It has come down to me buying *only* WD Black-series drives and nothing else. If I could afford them, I'd consider enterprise-grade drives. Having said that, I have a pair of 1TB Green drives in RAID-1 for the TimeMachine backups on my Mac, and they've been spinning 24x7 non-stop for 3 years without failure. I'm almost afraid to switch them off. Now, if WD can just get their post-flood production back in gear so prices can drop. My 2c, FWIW :-) Chuck

Thanks much to* Christoph *for pointing me in the right direction, appears to be an issue with the latest Vmware -tools, not sure I did a clean install with the opensource ones to see if they had the same issues but applying both of the fixes in the link post solves the problem with running the latest freenx and nx rpms found in the repo. strange memory issues with CentOS 6.2 on VPS

Hi all, today we've encountered quite strange issues with memory allocation on one of our VPS running CentOS 6.2. So far I've been unable to determine what's causing it - hopefully someone here will know what's up. The VPS is a "small" machine - just 512MB of RAM, 1 CPU, running 6.2. with current kernel (2.6.32-220.4.2.el6.x86_64, but I've tried the 2.6.32-71.el6.x86_64 too). There's a quite common stack installed, i.e. Nainstalován je na něm celkem standardní stack - apache, php, postgresql, postfix, dovecot, memcached and ssh. Basically nothing exotic, everything from official repos (except from postfix and postgresql). The machine is not heavily used. More detailed logs (than posted here) are available here: http://pastebin.com/vYxRUyUX We've been hitting some I/O utilization issues (cause by other VPS instances on the same hw) so we've migrated to a different physical hw. According to free/vmstat there's about 200MB of free RAM all the time, so I have no idea why the alloc calls fail. The fact that I haven't noticed these issues before the migration are probably caused by a swap file - I've manually added it during a maintenance and forgot to remove it after that, but it disappeared when the machine was rebooted during migration. There's a SELinux enable, but I doubt it's causing the issues - there's nothing in audit logs except for an information that there was a segfault. Nothing suspicious. Otherwise it's just a standard CentOS install, the only thing I had to tune a bit were kernel limits (in sysctl.conf) related to shared memory (because of the database). Currently there's kernel.shmmax = 68719476736 kernel.shmall = 134217728 vm.swappiness = 0 vm.overcommit_memory = 2 which should be fine IMHO ... any ideas? regards Tomáš

Hi, I have reinstalled centos 6.2 x86_64 because it seems there is not xfs mod on i386. But i have found an orther problem. After the partitioning there is not any prompt to choice the type of server I want (minimal, web etc) So now I have a desktop installation... I want to remove xorg, gnome etc.. and an other bug.. i am unable to setup Eth interface ... with system-config-network-tui i cant see any eth.. Centos 6.x and Freenx issue..

Finally got a chance to install Centos 6.x x86_64 version and having an issue with the latest version of freenx. This is a desktop install on a esxi 5 with all updates and only thing I have installed is the latest vmware tools. When I enable the extras repo and install the nx-3.5.0-1.el6.ay.x86_64.rpm and freenx-0.7.3-8.el6.ay.x86_64.rpm. When I try to logon the desktop pops up but I get the little busy circle and it never completes, I am unable to close the session or do anything to the freenx window. Here is the odd, part, if I install the earlier versions from toracat, freenx-0.7.3-7.el6.ay.x86_64.rpm and nx-3.4.0-7.el6.ay.x86_64.rpm the session comes up and works fine,I can exclude the updates but wondering if anyone has any idea of what I might try to get it to work with the latest, thanks in advance.

Shrew Soft VPN Client for CentOS 6

Hi All - Where I work uses the Shrew Soft VPN client to access remote resources. I have found pre-built rpms for EL5, various versions of Fedora, and appropriate packages for non-rpm based distros but no rpm for EL6. I have downloaded the source from Shrew Soft and built "my own" which built and installed with no errors but then didn't work. I'm finally taking the lack of pre-built rpms for EL6 as a clue that there is some sort of inherent problem getting this VPN client working under EL6. Is there a problem with Shrew Soft and EL6? If so, are there any work-arounds? Background: I also have the Shrew Soft VPN client (rpm installed) for FC16 running on my FC16 box on the same network as my EL6 box so I have a known working configuration and know that there are no firewall issues. This same configuration and user connects under EL6 (confirmed on the VPN server) but is unusable (e.g., I can't ping known systems). Thanks, Dave

Must I reload a service (BTW, is it "crond" yet?) after editing /etc/anacrontab? How to tell that it may launch between 21:00 and 5:00? - START_HOURS_RANGE=21-05? - START_HOURS_RANGE=21-23,00-05? - ... -- RMA.

Video corruption bug in stellarium

Just installed stellarium-0.10.2-1.el6.rf(i686) last night with the Add/Remove Software tool. I'm getting video corruption and this message in the terminal: StelAppGraphicsScene: drawBackground needs a QGLWidget to be set as viewport on the graphics view A bit of Google work turned up this on the Ubuntu forum: "The new version of Stellarium 0.10.3 resolves my display problems. It's not yet available in the standard repos but is in Scott Howard's PPA (https://launchpad.net/~showard314/+archive/ppa)" "Latest update of LL (official repositories) brought 10.3 of Stellarium and the problem is finally gone :D" "Yup 0.10.3 in the repos, but there's a newer version 0.10.4 which is to be made available by the developer which resolves some bugs." I'm not sure which CentOS repository the stellarium rpm is in but I do know that it's out of date. Who's cage should I rattle to get the repo up to speed? There's a whole herd of ways to count and track the amount of data that goes through a given network port. However, I'm looking for a user-friendly (and pretty, if possible) monitor or counter program with the following features: 1. Grand total amount of data in and out since last counter reset. 2. Resettable counters both manual (reset it when you want to) or timed (reset this thing monthly or weekly, etc.) 3. Breakdown of external and internal traffic volume, by gateway if possible. Basically, I'm looking for a report with fields or a graph similar to this Total data transferred since the last reset: Total data sent: Total data received: Total data sent through external gateway 192.168.0.1: Total data received through external gateway 192.168.0.1: And so on if the computer has sent data through other gateways if there are several on a network. I've found all kinds of counters but none that seem to break out internal traffic from the external traffic by gateway. Audio weirdness on CentOS 6.2 with flash?

Hi List, I have an ASUS G73S laptop with our favorite OS installed and all up-to-date. Sound has always "just worked" When I use the Preferences>Sound app I can setup the hardware, input, output and was overall very impressed. One can check each speaker and the laptop has a front left and right and also has a bass speaker which seems to be connected to the left rear. The various players seem to work fine e.g mplayer, JuK, VLC media player. Recently I wanted to play a movie off the internet and so out came Firefox. Imagine my surprise as I hear only the background music from the rear channel - the front left and right appear to have disappeared. When I plug in some headphones, it seems that the phones only pick up right rear and left rear - front left and right are gone (laptop speakers are muted due to headphones being plugged in) So one cannot listen to audio from internet via flash player........ I have the high definition digital audio disabled as I understand this is for the HDMI audio system which I have not played with. Hi All, I was thinking of using ext4 on a new raid system of 20TB. I had read the article (halfway done the page) titled "Linux File System Fsck Testing -- The Results Are In" https://www.ultimateeditionoz.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=26180 They used CentOS 5.7 (2.6.18-274 kernel) and they state "The stock configuration was used throughput the testing except for one component. The e2fsprogs package was upgraded to version 1.42, enabling ext4 file systems larger than 16TB to be created." I have looked for an "el6" version of "e2fsprogs 1.42" with no joy. Any ideas anyone? Pam problems

I'm having problems with what I think is PAM. Seems that ever since Centos 5, proftpd has had problems using pam, and with Centos 6.2 64 bit, I had to quit using it altogether with proftpd. Now I'm trying to set up SMTP AUTH using PAM as the pwcheck parm to saslauthd, and I can't setup new email accounts on my port submission (587) to work at all. We use this port of sendmail so outside users can send through our own email server. The crazy thing is that users that were setup previously before my migration from an older Centos 3 box to the new box can still use the port fine on the new server. But I can't get a new account to work. I'm not seeing any errors anywhere, but when trying to configure an account manually in Thunderbird, it fails whenever I use port 587. I've got a similar host on using old Centos 3 that still works fine and I'm using it as a model along with the settings on the original Centos 3 host that was replaced for most of my parameters. Anyone had any experience with sendmail and this sort of thing on Centos 6.2? I've stared at this thing for days and tried about everything I can think of. The yum says pam is up to date. I have at the least the same pam packages, if not more, on the new server as the old ones. Any help would be appreciated. steve campbell

Really bad KVM disk performance

Hi Gang, I recently rented a server at a datacenter with Centos 5.7 X64, Q9550 Processor, 8GB Ram, and dual 250GB SATA HDs (with 16mb cache). They had loaded it with KVM, and installed a 30-day trial of Virtualizor as the front-end for KVM. I was so impressed with how fasts the guests ran that I want to build a few of these machines for myself. I just installed one: same Q9550 processor, 4GB ram, and dual 250GB SATA HDs (with 32mb cache). I installed Centos 6.2 X64, and installed Webmin's Cloudmin as the front-end. Immediately when I was installing stuff, I could tell this new system I just built was not nearly as fast as the first one. I ran some CPU and disk benchmarking programs, and saw that while the CPU stuff tested similarly, the disk thruput was much different... Down-right poor in one of the guests! On both systems, /dev/md2 is a LVM reserved exclusively for KVM guests. So each guest is running in its own logical volume, in software raid. Thinking there may be something wrong with the HDs, I ran Bonnie ( http://www.coker.com.au/bonnie++/ ) and compared both host machines. They tested fairly similar (within 10%). Yet comparing their guests is like night and day. On a side note, I'm not thrilled with the Virtualizor's tech support, but the product seems easy to use, once it actually works. Cloudmin seems to be buggy, and not let you do things like change cd images on the fly, access the console before the machine fully boots (!)... Any suggestions on other, preferably open-source options? I'm a definite newbie to this virtualization stuff. Bob

Good Evening, I have a problem with CentOS 6.2. On December 2011 I installed CentOS 6.1 on a HP ProLiant DL 165 G7 server. Recentely I upgraded to CentOS 6.2 but at reboot the system didn't startup. So I removed new kernel kernel-2.6.32-220.4.2.el6 and CentOS was again able to startup with original kernel-2.6.32-71.el6.x86_64. ViSpan

I was looking for the old Vispan stuff, and it seems to have disappeared from the web. Now I realize it was old, but it did provide some details that I liked on my old servers. I've got mailscanner-mrtg running, but that only provides a view of what mailscanner sees. Does anyone know of a good replacement for vispan that might give complete stats on what the mail server is doing instead of just what MailScanner is doing? thanks steve campbell

Ways To Practice Breaking My System?

Hi All I've been looking into some ways to break a CentOS system so I can perform some simulated disaster recovery and get some hands-on practice with rescue mode and other system recovery tools. I'm thinking to start off with things like corrupting the password file with random characters, breaking grub.conf. I've been doing some research on the net, but would welcome any input from list members. Does anybody have any creative suggestions for ways to break the CentOS boot process? CentOS 6.2 install problem squid winbind

In the install process, I checked squid and winbind. Squid access to winbind fails because squid was not added to the wbpriv group. I suspect that winbind is being installed after squid. I manually added squid to wbpriv in group and gshadow to allow access. Heads up on major Firefox update incoming

As a heads up since this might have a large effect on people.... The upstream vendor has rebased form firefox 3.6 onto firefox 10... This effects both centos5 and centos6. I'm not sure reading this whether this is the extended update support version of if they intend to follow Mozilla's new release process....guess we'll find out when firefox 11 gets released... Hi all, I use yum-cron with my new CentOS 6-installs and rather like it. So much in fact, that I tried getting it to work in the older CentOS 5-installs I also have scattered at the department. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work for some reason. I found this; <<https://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=22483>>, where it's suggested one use yum-updatesd instead. Is this still true? CentOS-6.2 I created a new VirtIO disk for one of my virtual machines. Previous experience has taught me that I need to partition it before attempting to add the new storage to the physical volume set of the intended guest. Up to now I have simply accepted the defaults given by fdisk after telling it that I want a new partition. The defaults always exclude the first 2048 sectors. Disk /dev/vg_vhost01/lv_vm_inet09.harte-lyne.ca_01: 33.6 GB, 33554432000 bytes 109 heads, 61 sectors/track, 9856 cylinders, total 65536000 sectors Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes Disk identifier: 0x2b33a3c9 Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/vg_vhost01/lv_vm_inet09.harte-lyne.ca_01p1 2048 65535999 32766976 83 Linux Why? firefox and IronPort

A couple of weeks ago, I got an autogenerated email from the mail folks here, telling me they'd quarantined what they thought was spam. The last time I got one of these was a month or month and a half ago, and I had no problem. This time, however, I get a 500 error. When I pulled up firefox's error console, and clicked on the link, I got <servername elided>: server does not support RFC 5746, see CVE-2009-3555 I'm told they're running Cisco's IronPort. It appears the patch came out a year and a half or so ago. However, I also found a post where someone, apparently running on Windows, couldn't get to a site they needed to, either with IE 9 or FF10.somethingorother, until they downgraded. The support folks report they can get there, from Windows boxes. I've tried Mozilla's workarounds, in about:config, but no joy. My ff is up to date, including both patches from last week, and as those were critical, I'm very loathe to downgrade. a) Is anyone else seeing this? b) Any thoughts on whether it's an IronPort issue, or whether it might be a bug (new or reintroduced) browser problem? mark

I am installing a java program (.sh file), and I get this error. Hello, I am using SLC6 and wicd for wi-fi. Always during system booting wicd asks me to fill superuser password/or ignore (but in this case wi-fi works bad). I am using KDE ... Do you know the way how to remove this message (exactly small special window) from monitor? Thank you. Regards, Dusan

chmodding SCP

I have two machines, and I am trying to copy files from one to the other via SCP. Since this machine is accessible from two of our networks, we're trying to restrict the use of SCP to a select few individuals to prevent unauthorized data transmission from network to network. What we did was we chmodded 700 /usr/bin/scp. The owner has remained root and the group has remianed root. >From a different machine, I'm trying to scp to that machine, but I'm receiving an "access denied". My ssh key is in the authorized users file in the root profile. Anyone have a logical explanation? This e-mail transmission contains information that is confidential and may be privileged. [OT] Where did my Skype icon go?

CentOS-5.7 Skype 2.1.0.81beta Formerly, when I opened Skype a green Skype icon would appear in the upper menu bar of the Gnome desktop. Now it does not. I must have moved or modified something on the Desktop to cause this to disappear although I cannot recall what that might have been. It certainly was not a conscious modification and I would like to get the icon back. The absence is not merely cosmetic. Without that icon once I close the Skype dialog window I know of no other way to activate a desktop dialog window with the running Skype instance. Running Skype again gives the warning that another instance is already running and then quits. A clue to what has happened might be when Skype is in this state incoming notices pop-up from the right hand side of the lower (switcher) menu bar immediately to the left of the work space display. Filing a bug for clamav

Hi. IMHO there is a bug in the latest updater for clamav: * it places a freshclam script into /etc/cron.daily that uses a hardcoded datadir not defined in /etc/clamd.conf its never done that before in the last 5 years or so, and I have a script running from cron.d * its overwrites the permissions of existing directories (lib and log) to another new clamav user, although one already exist (making the system unstable) Where do I file a bug report? Please may you help me setup VPS

I am new to Linux so I do not have any special preferences. Yes I have a root access and the VPS is un managed. I am newbie to the Linux world. I will have a new website or maybe 3. I've found that un managed costs vary a lot, as I've found various ways for settings ... some using Xen, others using OpenVZ, and other using Virtuozzo and I found that it all vary regarding Ram allocations for each VPS. Also afraid to stuck with some over sell VPS as I had it before with shared hosting. For un managed hosting VPS will it be easy to secure the server from being hacked? or it is an impossible job for a newbie guy like me? Also for later on regarding updates or patching ... will it be good as well or not? Finally I've found most people using Ubuntu server LTS, so do you advise of using it or any other distribution? I've read a lot of reviews that most are advising for using CentOS or Debian, but I've found the majority are already using Ubuntu server. Thanks and too much appreciated your time reading and value your inputs. Note: After a lot of reading I've found that the steps should be as follow: (the funny thing that I've read and know what I should do but each time I am trying to run a command using PUTTY I get an error) - change root password to a secure one. - create another user with admin access with a strong password as well. - disable root remotely access. - use secure connection to the VPS by using PUTTY key instead of username and password login . - change the port to a high one with unusual figure like 26127 or any else - disable ftp and use another secure one. - install a fire wall, CSF firewall and Mod_security or anything else equal or more. - keep the whole thing up-to-date. - secure the whole VPS as much as possible. - finally use a trusted script on the website and his why I will use Drupal (mostly the core ones and nothing else without any modules). This is what I've got so far from reading many tutorials and still get a lot of errors when I follow them (howtoforge.com) is one of the famous websites I've visited. Sorry for being long ... But I am really hope if you here be able to help or guide me. - Late Edit - I've forget to mention that some steps I've forget to mention are: - using back ed control panel (like ISP config, VirtualMin) is facilitating the task but make VPS less secure, so using the command .
