I am thinking of buying a Logitech C920S Pro HD or C922 webcam for the necessary video conferencing. Is anyone using that with Zoom or perhaps with Jitsi? Do I need drivers? Any issues? Thank you.

Bridge network for virt-manager

Hello. I desire to get bridge network working using virt-manager. Centos 7 and centos 7 guest. >From researching I think I need to have a ifcfg-br0 file like this ? cat ifcfg-br0 DEVICE=nm-bridge0 STP=no TYPE=Bridge BOOTPROTO=none IPADDR=192.168.1.8 PREFIX=32 GATEWAY=192.168.1.1 IPV6INIT=no NAME=br0 ONBOOT=yes DELAY=0 Is that for sure needed ? Google authenticator on C8

Hi folks I have installed Google authenticator on a few C8 boxes This is working fine on all of them except one... - google-authenticator is installed and the box is added to my Android app - /etc/pam.d/sshd contains auth sufficient pam_google_authenticator.so - /etc/ssh/sshd_config contains ChallengeResponseAuthentication yes - sshd restarted When logging in, I'm prompted with the password (i.e. no request OTP request) I have already uninstalled/reinstalled/rebooted and compared the config files across boxes... but I can't see what I have done wrong Any clue about what I could have missed? I have an email server/aggregator which delivers locally for root, and all other emails in my domain. It sends outbound email to my isp (networksolutins) masquerading as my domain via smtp. This is with sendmail. It does not receive email from the internet via smtp. I use fetchmail to get incoming mail from multiple email/isp's. I use procmail for local delivery and serve emails using dovecot/imap. These all work fine. I am getting new hardware for this machine, and plan to setup centos 8, which uses postfix, not sendmail. I've been trying to provision a vm with the proper configuration, but cannot get any emails delivered to root. Is there a pointer to a configuration guide that will help me do what I want? I have googled about 100 setups, none of which are what I'm trying to achieve. They all suggest using an alias for root to a normal user, but them that user gets all of the cron, fail2ban, etc emails, instead of delivering them to root on the local machine. Thanks, -chuck --

How to rebuild the kernel

Hi everyone, I am using Centos 7.8.2003 kernel 3.10 . I was trying to build and install the latest linux stable kernel i.e. 5.7, I successfully did the process but accidentally messed it up by copying the .config file again in 5.7 kernel src,I tried to rebuild the 5.7 kernel but got make error as I was still on 5.7 kernel. Then I changed to 3.10 and tried to rebuild 5.7 but was not successful. I tried to reboot the system but this time I was in the maintenance mode. So if anyone could suggest any help in recovering the 3.10 kernel.

looking for ideas about how to create a constant data stream

Hi, I'm looking for a good way to create a constant data stream that will occupy a bandwidth of about 2--5Mbit/sec between two remote hosts over the internet. I have full access to the hosts involved. My first attempt to use scp to copy data from /dev/null on host A to /dev/null on host B, but scp says '/dev/null: not a regular file'. If something like that would work, I would be able to limit the bandwidth of this transfer in the router(s) involved so that it won't occupy all the bandwidth. Of course, it would be better if I could limit the bandwidth on the sending side rather than dropping packages. I could probably write some program to do that, but since I have never programmed such a kind of network application, it would be rather time consuming. Maybe there's already a kind of tool around that can do this. I need this to work around whatever settings my ISP has made 3 days ago that block my VPN connection so that I effectively can't reasonably work anymore. I do know what the problem with the connection is and that occupying some bandwidth would unblock the VPN; only there doesn't seem to be anything else I could about it.

This is CentOS-6x. I have cloned the HDD of a CentOS-6 system. xinetd custom service - perl - remote address

Hi all, I can't believe that I can't find the answer to this one. I have a perl script which is called by xinetd. I want that perl script to be able to detect the remote IP address of the caller. I presumed that it would be an environment variable but I could be wrong. I've found reference to the ENV and PASSENV arguments for xinetd.conf but no examples, and no indication of what auguments to use. In my script I have the following code: foreach (keys %ENV) { print "$_=$ENV{$_}\n";} but the only line I get back is: XINETD_LANG=en_US

IPv6 inbound routing

I see my ISP's gateway sending me neighbor solicitations to my external WAN interface for LAN clients on my internal LAN interface. How do I get the box to tell the ISP gateway that my box will route those addresses? I've been assigned a /56 and I'm using a /63 for the DMZ and a /64 for the LAN. The outbound packets seem to reach the destination server but nothing comes back. I'm assuming it's because the ISP router doesn't know to give my box the packets for the LAN clients. I'm using "tcpdump icmp6 -i em2" to watch the exchange. (For outbound routing, I have radvd configured to send router announcements to the LAN, and that seems to work, based on the packets I recieve from the LAN and from watching it with Wireshark on a Win10 client.)

I finally got an ISP connection with working IPv6 and now I need to add firewall rules for forwarding connections from my LAN to the WAN. I'm using firewalld to handle the high-level description that gets translated to iptables/ip6tables on CentOS 7. Of course, with IPv6, one doesn't do NAT, so the usual masquerade target doesn't make sense. But I want similar connection logic, with no inbound connections allowed to LAN clients and all outbound connections allowed. Hello, Here is the context during the problem occurs : We have a new machine running on centos 8.From this machine, we restore a postgresql dump on an other machine runnning on centos 7.After several hoursof running, restore fails due to a disconnection (no route to host).But, if we disable the firewall on centos 8, restore succeed. Before having this new centos 8 machine, we had a centos 7 machine and all worked fine with firewall activated. Has anyboby an ideas, clues or something else? Thanks, Thomas Poty

Thunderbird Revision Issues

Hey all, CentOS 6 has Thunderbird 68.8.0 CentOS 8 has Thunderbird 68.7.0 When I rsync my .thunderbird folder from my CentOS 6 machine to my CentOS 8 machine and start Thunderbird it says: "A newer version of Thunderbird may have made changes to your profile which are no longer compatible with this older version. Use this profile only with that newer version, or create a new profile for this installation of Thunderbird. Creating a new profile requires setting up your accounts, calendars and add-ons again." Needless to say, this is not an acceptable choice. I have several email accounts that would have to be set up. That's not such a big issue, but I have many local folders set up that I can't duplicate on the new installation if I can't use my previous profile. Does anyone know when CentOS 8 will catch up with CentOS 6 so that I can start using my new CentOS 8 box? Perhaps there is another work around. I've tried many of the solution provided on the mozilla web site to no avail. I even tried to install Thunderbird 68.8.0 on my CentOS 8 box. That didn't make it happy either. mkfs.fat Device or resource busy

I'm trying to format a 16 GB SD card to FAT32. Either it won't find the device or it gives me the titular error message. mkfs.fat /dev/sdc I have tried "ejecting" the drive and reinserting the card. I have tried inserting another card, checking to insure that I could see its file, ejecting that card and inserting the target card. If I do not umount it, busy, if I don't, not found. What is the incantation for formatting an SD card. authconfig vs authselect

I had the habit to use authconfig --passalgo=sha512 --update but in EL8 its not supported anymore. The authselect-compat package is installed (and it says "not supported anymore and have no effect). Whats the equivalent call using the new tool "authselect"? -- Thanks Leon

Some switch hardware can generate the packets directly, negating the need for a box on every VLAN. Meraki hardware can do it, but you have to go through the dashboard so automating it isn't currently possible. External Array Data Migration

Dear All, Below question has been puzzled me for a while, and don’t know if anyone has experienced such puzzle: You have an external array attached to a physical hardware. The operating system is CentOS 5. The file system is created on top of LVM on external array & mounted. The CentOS 5 can see the array controller, and manage all LVM configuration, etc. There is data stored in that external array. At some point, you want to upgrade the operating system to higher version, CentOS 7. Is there a fast way to migrate the external array data volume to new hardware with CentOS 7 without doing machine-to-machine rsync the whole external array data volume? In another words, can I detach external array from old hardware, and attach it to new hardware, then re-configure LVM, so new operating system can recognize the external array file system? how does autofs deal with stuck NFS mounts and suspending to RAM?

Hi, after trying sshfs to mount a remote file system on a server with the result that sshfs will sooner or later get stuck and require a reboot of the client, I'm fed up with it and am looking for alternatives. So next I would like to use NFS over a VPN connection instead. To minimize the instances of the NFS mount getting stuck, it might be helpful to use autofs. What happens when the mount is stuck because the connection is down and autofs figures the idle timeout has expired and tries to unmount the remote file system? What happens when I put the client to sleep by suspending to RAM? Will autofs automatically unmount first, or will the server have to deal with a client that has apparently gone away and might re-appear later in unexpected ways? Is there a way to tell NFS to retry an operation _now_ after the connection went down and came back, rather than having to wait for a possibly rather long time? Is there a better alternative for mounting remote file systems over unreliable connections?

Transparent Squid and FirewallD : fine-tuning question

Hi, I just setup a very basic HTTP proxy with Squid on a router running CentOS 7. Up until early 2020 I've been using a bone-headed shell script with iptables to configure my firewall. But I decided to follow advice from a few gurus on this list, and I've since moved my configurations to FirewallD, which works nicely. There's one configuration left to tackle, that's port redirection for the Squid proxy server. Which also works fine, though I'd like to figure out a little detail. Here goes. When a client desktop in the 192.168.3.0/24 network browses HTTP sites on the web, it appears in the Squid log on the server in /var/log/squid/access.log. And here comes the question. How can I redirect all HTTP requests to port 3128 EXCEPT THOSE THAT ARE DIRECTLY AIMED AT THE PROXY SERVER? Here's the thing. The proxy server (amandine.sandbox.lan) is also running httpd to display a static information page for the local network. Now client desktops can access http://amandine.sandbox.lan in a web browser just fine. But this still goes through the proxy, and I'd like these requests to rather be handled directly. In iptables syntax this would vaguely look like this: $ iptables -A PREROUTING -t nat -i 192.168.3.1 -p tcp \ ! -d 192.168.3.1 --dport 80 -j REDIRECT --to-port 3128 How can I translate the "! -d 192.168.3.1" part into some FirewallD-specific syntax ? Hi, I’m running a special initrd generated for SystemImager with a special dracut module that relies on plyouth scripted theme. It works perfectly on CentOS-6, CentOS-7, OpenSUSE-42.3, Fedora-29 (not tested later) and used to work on CentOS-8.0 Since CentOS-8.1 was released, IT chrashes with the following error: Plymouthd crash 913: ply_event_loop_watch_for_timeout: Assertion `seconds > 0.0' failed. I’m running quemu 5.0.0 with tianocore UEFI bios on MacOS (using accel=none or accel=hvf) (Bug also occurs with standard 256k bios) When I strace, I see multiple reasons but I can’t tell wich one is fatal. 1/ plymouthd reads /etc/Plymouth/plymouthd.conf (ok), then tries to read them from /var/run/plymouth/themes/<themename> instead of /usr/share/plymouth/themes/<themename>/ . As it fails it tries to read /var/run/plymouth/plymouthd.defaults (fails) then /usr/share/plymouth//plymouthd.defaults (ok) then it tries to read the theme /var/run/plymouth/themes/<themename>/<themename>.plymouth (fails) but never tries to read in from /usr/share/plymouth/themes/<themename>/<themename.plymouth> ??? It still continues 2/ After a few things, it tries to read /sys/devices/virtual/drm/ttm/uevent (ok) and the it tries to read /run/dev/data/+drm:ttm (fail). Is it expectable or does this means a problem like a missing udev rule or a boch driver bug or something else? 3/ Same as step 2 4/ Crash with @lymouthd: ply-event-loop.c:913: ply_event_loop_watch_for_timeout: Assertion `seconds > 0.0' failed. I’ve reported this in Centos-8.1 with no return and then RedHat-8.1 today. kvm: C8 as guest on C6 host / huge delay while booting

Since C8.1 kvm guests have a huge delay while booting on a kvm host based on C6. This delay was not present with C8.0. The "pause" happend direct after the grub step. The VNC session shows only a "_" character. Any ideas what changes? -- Leon

CentOS 7 - xfs shrink & expand

I'm having some difficulty finding a method to shrink my /home to expand my /. They both correspond to LVMs. It is my understanding that one cannot shrink a xfs filesystem. One must back it up (xfsdump), remove (lvremove) redefine it and then restore it back (xfsrestore). Okay, I'm running into a problem where /home needs to be "unused". If tried going in to "maintance mode", but I ran into a problem with the mount command (after issuing a 'chroot /sysroot'). I then tried using SystemRescueCD to boot to, but it wouldn't mount my 32TB RAID USB drive (something about too big). Any thoughts or suggestions? -Frank

I have also noticed that retrieving src rpms via 'dnf download --source' doesn't work with the default CentOS-Sources.repo configuration. Create Virtualbox image from running system?

I see that Microsoft has a utility that (apparently) can read a running system and create an image that can then be imported and run on Virtualbox. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/disk2vhd "You can even have Disk2vhd create the VHDs on local volumes, even ones being converted (though performance is better when the VHD is on a disk different than ones being converted)." Is there anything that does the same thing for Linux, and can image a system like that while it's actually running? -- Can we uninstall 2020 and install it again? This one has a virus. I'm a long-time user of MATE ever since GNOME3 was released, but until now I've never had any problems with it. I have no idea where to start troubleshooting. I've looked in journalctl, systemctl, and dmesg, but found nothing obvious. There's nothing in the MATE wiki to help. Can't move to Centos 8

Folks I've been trying to convert my systems to Centos 8, seeing the EOL on the horizon a few years away. One of my systems is a Mac-Mini, and support for that has been discontinued. I'm wondering what the community suggests among these alternatives: 1) Stay with Centos 7 even after EOL hoping market pressures will add Mac-Mini support 2) Spend a few hundred dollars on a small, **quiet** replacement (ugh) 3) Convert to the Debian/Ubuntu distro. 4) Hope someone figures out a solution. By the way, the same issue exists, I believe, also for other Mac products, such as the newer laptops and servers. David

CentOS 8 Client to Windows file share SSO Active Directory

All; My Google foo is failing me, and searching through the last 10 months on this mailing list hasn't helped either. We have an existing Active Directory domain set up, and I'd like to add a CentOS 8 Workstation to it. I have experience using both realmd and manual configuration to allow local login with AD accounts to various Linux distribution, and have this working on my test system. I used realmd this time, and it configured sssd. I have one problem that I've never been able to solve; when I attempt to connect to a remote file server, while logged on to the CentOS 8 system using a domain account, it asks for credentials. Theoretically, this should work as it's just Kerberos. Can anyone point me at resources on what is needed for SSO to domain resources to work properly? This may be related to another issue that I'm seeing; I don't see the CentOS 8 user logon event (event ID 4624) on the Domain Controller. Dear All, I want to create a CentOS 7 VMWARE VM. I need to install various Runtime libraries, e.g., Tomcat, into the VM. Once all looks good, then I want to make a Custom Image of the entire VM. Later I want to load this Custom Image to a physical HW, so that I don’t need to go through all kinds Runtime installation. Default ACL inheritance question

A bit of a minor off-topic issue, but on the off-chance that someone understands how ACLs work ... I've been trying to see if using default ACLs would help with the following issue: I have a third party application that is running as a non-root user ('user-a') and creating log files with mode 0600 (read/write only to the owner) in a log directory I have another application that runs as another non-root user ('user-b') that needs to read the log files created by 'user-a' I can't change the mode of the log files generated by 'user-a', but I thought I could add a default ACL to the log file's parent directory that gave read access to 'user-b' - i.e. something like: % sudo setfacl -d -m u:user-b:r logdir % getfacl logdir # file: logdir # owner: user-a # group: user-a user::rwx group::r-x other::r-x default:user::rwx default:user:user-b:r-- default:group::rwx default:mask::rwx default:other::r-x Now when new log files are created in logdir, the default ACL is inherited, but 'user-b' still can't read the files - i.e. % getfacl logdir/logfile # file: logdir/logfile # owner: user-a # group: user-a user::rw- user:user-b:r-- #effective:--- group::rwx #effective:--- mask::--- other::--- i.e. the effective access for 'user-b' is '---' - which is no access to read for 'user-b' I'm not sure where 'effective' comes from? Hi Is it my imagination/impatience, but I don't seem to have received any updates to CentOS 8 recently. I'm thinking particularly of firefox which was updated in CentOS 7 for a critical security update. Is there a backlog of CentOS 8 updates behind the 8.2 release? I noticed on a few occasions that my local mirroring had picked up and later deleted a lot of "tmp" files for CentOS 8, is that an indication that something is on the way? I understand that everyone is struggling with Covid19 restrictions, so just tell me to get back into my isolation if I'm just a bit too impatient. -- Cheers Bill

Hi, Anyone here managed to run Jitsi Meet on a CentOS 7 server ? As far as I can tell, it's one of the nicer open source videoconferencing solutions out there. I gave it a spin on https://suricate.tv and now I'd like to install it on one of my servers. Unfortunately the Jitsi developers only provide documentation for Debian/Ubuntu. Well, there is some sort of guide for CentOS around. As far as I can tell, the purpose of this guide is to encourage CentOS users to switch to Debian/Ubuntu. :o) Anyway, if you have a pointer to some comprehensible docs, I'd be grateful. Monitoring network traffic to a host

Background - I am having an issue with occassional pauses when streaming high-bitrate media across my home network to my smart TV. I *suspect* that the root cause is the (incredibly lame) 100 Mbps Ethernet interface in the TV. In order to confirm that the peak bitrate really does max out the 100 Mbps connection, I'd like to monitor the communication between my NAS and the TV. The two devices are on separate VLANs, with routing performed by a CentOS 7 system, so it should theoretically be relatively simple to use an appropriate utility on the "router" to monitor and, if possible, graph the network traffic going to the TV. Ideally, I could run said utility for the entire time that the media file is playing and then look at its pretty graph to check if/when the bitrate hit 100 Mbps. Being able to watch the pretty graph in real time through a web interface would be nice as well, but is not required. Is any such program included in CentOS 7 or EPEL 7? The closest thing that I've found thus far is iftop (despite its lack of pretty). Unfortunately, it won't allow me to see the peak bitrate over the whole period in which the media is playing. Hi All - I was looking all over for xvidtune on Centos 8. could not find it. tried yum provides "*/xvidtune" tried yum search xvidtune Google pointed me to: https://centos.pkgs.org/8/centos-powertools-x86_64/xorg-x11-apps-7.7-21.el8… So I installed the apps and of course xvidtune is part of that. CentOS 7 disable the the hot corner

I have loaded the gnome-shell-extension-no-hot-corner-3.28.1-11.el7.noarch and also the gnome-tweaks. When I run gnome-tweaks no where in there do I find the disable hot corner. where is that ? Its annoying when the mouse goes to the upper left and all the windows shrink. I wish to disable it. Thanks. Jerry

For some reason, I no longer seem to get images from www.imdb.com , i.e. Internet Movie DataBase. The effect is really weird. I get from Firefox, Konqueror and Chromium. I'm running Centos 7. It's been happening for a few months now, so I really cannot tell what changed that mioght have caused it. How do I debug and fix this? Chromium still asks me for passwords a lot. CentOS 8 installer bug

CentOS 8.1.1911 has a bug in the installer. It is not possible to use more than one NFS repo via kickstart repo directive as the installer tries to mount all of them on /run/install/.nfs. You get this DBG payload: /run/install/.nfs already has something mounted on it message for all but the first one. The problem was reported for Fedora 29/30. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1669711 Do we know if this is fixed in RHEL 8.2?

Does someone uses EL8 as a workstation (GUI) here? This bug is super annoying https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1808900 and it seems not to get addressed in the current branch. How could a developer work with a forced delay in the UI (since a year now). Solution maybe in 8.3 ETA end of the year? Seems that all RH employees uses OSX as workstation (my impression of the summit) :-) This bug is located in gtk3 and should also hit non-GNOME users. Am I the only one here? Is CentOS Stream the workplace to address this bug? -- Leon

Hi, folks, Updated CentOS 7 the other day. Updated zoom last night. Ancient (15 yr old) USB camera, Logitech QuickCam Express. If I run LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib64/libv4l/v4l2convert.so cheese, I get video. Zoom, with or without the LD_PRELOAD - no video. I've tried stracing zoom, and created a file /etc/ld.so.preload, with the contents of /usr/lib64/libv4l/v4l2convert.so, and in strace, I see it loading it, but still no video. Anyone got any clues? Being a free end user, all zoom offers is the knowledge base.... mark

Hi, folks, Installed discord last night, everything, including video worked, but not voice. As usual, I logged out last night before bed, and voice seems to work. Used the tgz, of course. HOWEVER, note that you *do* need to install libatomic for it to work properly, otherwise when it comes up, it says "the installation is corrupt", and the only button there, for help, is *ONLY* for Windows. I found through searching that it did need this. Install that, and no error message. mark

I have an old laptop W530 I put CentOS 8 on. I was trying to install xvidtune - seems to not be available ? Thought that was part of X. Also trying to get Nouveau to be a higher resolution than 1024x768. I found the wiki, but adding video= to the kernel command line and regen grub did not do anything. Other documentation there seemed OLD. Anyone know how to correctly get Nouveau in 1920x1080? Thanks, Jerry

CentOS 8 installation

Are there still a lot of rough edges in this area? There are some things I simply can't get to work. This is about kickstart installations. Finding the right stuff for the %packages sections is lucky dip at best. The RHEL manual points to the comps file, really? This file isn't meant to be parsed by humans. Specifying an environment - the example "Infrastructure Server" doesn't exist. Is this one of the areas where CentOS deviates from RHEL? I did find server-product-environment, custom-environment, minimal-environment. I followed the link in the documentation to the kickstart file generator. The generated file isn't usable as is, specifically the %packages section - anaconda says there is no group dns-server, for instance. Which dnf later confirms. The group list in dnf also seems to be a lot shorter than it used to be under 7? Specifying %packages --multilib, this is where it breaks down completely. For the chosen group/package mix, which works perfectly without multilib, anaconda complains about conflicts for files provided by both the i686 and the x86_64 version of, in this case, gdb-headless and sssd-common. Attempting to fix this with -gdb-headless.i686 -sssd-common.i686 fails, these lines are being ignored. Excluding gdb-headless altogether fails also because the main gdb package pulls it in. Honestly, I'm not sure where to go from here.

Hello, For the last few days, 'dnf upgrade' on my Centos 8 installation has been showing problems saying that it cannot install the best update candidates for packages (kf5-*) because nothing provides libQtCore.so.5(Qt_5.12). My system shows that it presently has libQtCore.so.5(Qt_5.11). I've been keeping the system up to date using the --nobest option in dnf. I could download 'libqt5-core-5.12.8-alt3.x86_64.rpm ' from here and install it but I haven't dared to try. Is there an expectation for when version Qt_5.12 will be in the official repos? video problems

I've got an ancient USB videocam (QuickCam Express, yes, 15 years old). I got it working under C7, after I removed the default loaded gspca_spca561, and replaced it with the previous driver, gspca_spca508. It also needed zc3xx. Then I updated and rebooted my system a couple of days ago, and now no /dev/video, no errors.... Any clues? mark "other than waiting for a camera to arrive from China somewhere in June or July?"

Odd permissions

I've posted a couple times in the last month, that for some reason, since I rebuilt to CentOS 7 from 6 (same home directory, another partition, of course), when I log out, it restarts with me logged in, and only the second time I log out does it actually log me out. Still debugging that. I have logged in as root, and don't have the problem, so I'm assuming that it's something incompatible, or somehow mis-set in ~/.<whatever>. Looking in ~/.cache, I found something weird: ~/.cache/gnome-control-center, which had permissions of d-w-rwxr-T Say *what*? Anyone got a clue as to why? And while I'm looking for clues, does anyone have any thoughts as to where my issue might lie? mark

We located an application recommended by one of customers for sharing certain data. It was available for installation using a few different methods. Using yum was also recommended for the installation. The install instructions began with what appeared to be a fairly typical command as indicated below (with the URL slightly altered). sudo rpm --import https://rpm.xxxxx.com/rpmrepo.key To our junior employee assigned to perform the install on a test system, it seemed like a good idea to do some checking on the rpm option --import indicated in those instructions. They did not find the --import in any of the 14 pages of the CentOS 7 man page for rpm. Some Google searches indicated that the --import option does exist. The repo setup and application installation all went well and took only about three minutes. The app is also working as intended. Is there some good reason for --import being left out of the manual page?

Custom ISO

Hi All, I am trying to make a customer ISO. When I run this command: mkisofs -o $DESTINATION_FILE -b isolinux/isolinux.bin -c boot.cat \ -no-emul-boot -boot-info-table \ -V "$NAME" -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table -R -J -v -T \ -eltorito-alt-boot -e images/efiboot.img \ $DESTINATION_DIR it tells me: Size of boot image is 4 sectors -> No emulation Size of boot image is 17408 sectors -> genisoimage: Error - boot image 'images/efiboot.img' has not an allowable size. This is the exact same file that is on the Everything ISO image. What am I missing ? I also want to make the ISO boot with UEFI. I think I have the right parameters but getting this error. Thoughts? hi guys I've just let the system to get big update to 7.8 and with it came new Samba(4.10.4-10.el7.x86_64), a version with now fails on my boxes for no apparent reasons. My Samba uses LDAP backend but I can see no errors related to that neither. ... Understanding VDO vs ZFS

Folks I'm looking for a solution for backups because ZFS has failed on me too many times. In my environment, I have a large amount of data (around 2tb) that I periodically back up. I keep the last 5 "snapshots". I use rsync so that when I overwrite the oldest backup, most of the data is already there and the backup completes quickly, because only a small number of files have actually changed. Because of this low change rate, I have used ZFS with its deduplication feature to store the data. I started using a Centos-6 installation, and upgraded years ago to Centos7. Centos 8 is on my agenda. However, I've had several data-loss events with ZFS where because of a combination of errors and/or mistakes, the entire store was lost. I've also noticed that ZFS is maintained separately from Centos. At this moment, the Centos 8 update causes ZFS to fail. Looking for an alternate, I'm trying VDO. In the VDO installation, I created a logical volume containing two hard-drives, and defined VDO on top of that logical volume. It appears to be running, yet I find the deduplication numbers don't pass the smell test. I would expect that if the logical volume contains three copies of essentially identical data, I should see deduplication numbers close to 3.00, but instead I'm seeing numbers like 1.15. I compute the compression number as follows: Use df and extract the value for "1k blocks used" from the third column use vdostats --verbose and extract the number titled "1K-blocks used" Divide the first by the second. Can you provide any advice on my use of ZFS or VDO without telling me that I should be doing backups differently? Thanks David

However, running into issues as this module is not found. use Net::Interface; I could use cpan to install the same, but currently using the rpm packages for all the needs. Any idea which rpm package provides this perl module? Thanks.

fcitx and switching between keyboards

This is an old issue for me running CentOS 7, latest update. I am using fcitx to switch between keyboards, two western ones and Chinese pinyin keyboard. Ever since I installed CentOS 7 over two years ago, I have been unable to resolve issues where I can maintain keyboard setting within one application, notably chromium, and/or between applications. fcitx has a setting for allowing the keyboard choice to remain across applications but it does not work - so far. Further, in chromium, even when within an IME, every time I hit ENTER, the keyboard resets back to the default (EN_US). Needless to say, this makes for some very tedious typing using an alternative keyboard. I do not have this problem remaining within a single IME in Thunderbird, nor in Firefox, nor in LibreOffice. I can switch back and forth between one of these apps and the keyboard switches back to what I last used in that app when switching back to the app - /provided I have used Chinese/. It does not work when I use different western keyboards in the various apps. Is anyone using fcitx switching between different keyboards and can confirm the above - or refute it?

dhcpd: Not searching LDAP

Whenever my dhcp server is restarted it always puts this entry into /var/log/messages: dhcpd: Not searching LDAP since ldap-server, ldap-port and ldap-base-dn were not specified in the config file This isn't earth-shattering news since I don't have a ldap server and there's no mention of ldap in /etc/dhcp/dhcpd.conf either. So is this an error message? Diagnosing IPv6 routing

I just got 50 Mbps symmetric fiber from AT&T and it includes a /56 of IPv6 addresses, replacing a much slower ADSL line. I never tried to get IPv6 working on the old connection. I'm using CentOS 7 as a gateway and it's worked great for several versions for IPv4. I'm not seeing any IPv6 default route on the WAN interface. I suspect I'm not getting route announcements. I think I have all the IPv6 variables in ifcfg-em2 set right. But I do notice that the accept_ra file in proc for that interface has value 1, not 2. Changing it to 2 doesn't change anything, though. No route appears. While I wait for an answer to my trouble ticket, is there some way to verify that I'm not receiving any RA packets? Is there a way to force a solicitation for one? Is there a tcpdump invocation I can use to watch for them? Are there log messages that will tell me when an RA has been seen and added to the routing table or ignored?

INITRD_MODULES

I am trying to take a CentOS 7 img and get hyperv to boot. First step. qemu-img convert "CentOS7.img" -O vhdx -o subformat=dynamic "CentOS7.vhdx" after adding new hyper-v I get dracut-timeout... So doing some searching it says add hv_vmbus hv_netvsc hv_storvsc to INITRD_MODULES. which doesnt really exist any more in CentOS 7. I did find /etc/dracut.conf and add_drivers... I uncommented the line for '#add_drivers += "" ' added the above modules and then ran: grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg Then redid the convert above... Hyper-V still gives me dracut-timeout errors. Thoughts ? Did I miss something ? Thanks Jerry

Tomcat or what on CentOS 8?

Hi, We're running some web apps on CentOS 6 on Tomcat 6 shipped by the distribution. As time goes by we'd like to move on to CentOS 8 and Tomcat 9 or whatever is appropriate. My question is, what do others use now that Tomcat is not shipped anymore with CentOS? Do you run some JBoss/WildFly instead or still running Tomcat? And, how do you install/manage those installations. Do you have RPM packaged versions or fiddle with tarballs? Since this is a quite standard setup for web apps I'm really wondering how everybody is doing it these days? Thanks, Simon

Checksums in Distribution Directories

Folks While trying to automate a download of the ISO files, I ran into inconsistencies with the method of checksums. I was trying to use the checksum values to validate my download. I don't know if this method is used on all mirrors. Would it be too much to ask that there be one format across the distributions. I suspect that SHA256 is going to be an acceptable digest for a few years. David

Network Interfaces Issue

I have two network interfaces configured on a server. I would like both of them to be configured to start on boot, but when I enable the second interface to start on boot I do not have access to the first network interface. The second interface is a private network and does not allow any communication our or in from any other interfaces. I can start the server with the first network interface being the only one enabled to start at boot and go in and activate the second interface which allows communication on both interfaces, but when they are both enabled to start on boot only the private interface can communicate. Understanding modularity

Hi, I've read the Fedora modularity docs but am still missing the big picture somehow. Hope someone can clarify things for me. What I'm most wondering: does modularity have any influence on the RPM packages at all. I mean, is there anything inside a RPM package which says it belongs to a module or it has a special function in a module? >From what I understand the RPMs are just completely normal packages and only YUM/DNF knows from some metadata that an RPM belongs to a module. Weird problem with my app and blocked ports

Hi, Not sure where to look for my issue. I hope someone can point me in the correct place. I have been working on a bespoke server package for more than twenty years. It was originally developed on Solaris (Unix), was ported to windows and now ported to Linux for the last five years. This system is in live production under heavy usage everyday. The servers are all written in C++ and use a version of encoded ONC RPC (without bind) to communicate server to server and java for the client displays. Since about six months ago, I have been experiencing a weird issue with the sockets on my test system. My dev env is on CentsOS 7.7 running on Virtualbox 6 on a Windows 10 machine. The VM has bridge networks interface to my lan using a static IP. Our servers talk on the interface on Virtualbox to other servers possibly on other hosts via my real network. All works well until I do a massive relability and soak test of one of our servers. I send a series of large data message every 15 second or so to one of our servers (say Y), expecting that I might see a lockup and bugs to fix etc in that server Y. But instead of Y server failing what I see is the well know port that our system uses (ie 2323) for name lookup requests, block and I then see timouts of on that socket (this is a different server say Z). All the others servers (A..Y) get timeouts communicating to Z from then on. This effect I don't see on other OSs with similar tests. If I systemctl stop our service and then restart the servers A-Y start but continue to fail with timeouts to Z. Reboot does the same. I have change the well know port to 23232 and it still fails. I have run the servers in the systemctl as a new user and it still fails. As a mad idea I change the interface so the servers talk on the virtual box internal network and the system returns to operation. Also if I run the servers manually on the command line as my user account they work. It kind of looks like a firewall/anti-virus/tojan block rule on our well known port 2323 or Z server. As far as I can see the CentOS firewall is not running. The Norton firewall on my PC does not seam to have an rules or warning about my virtualbox ips or ports. Our servers don't cache any ip data. The first time this happened I was too busy to look at it and just restored the VM from a backup. It then happened a second time a month ago and spend a day looking at the issue found nothing and restored from backup again, putting it down to the centos security update I have just done earlier that day. It happen for a third time on Friday (24th). This time I have done no updates since the last restore so I can be sure its not a centos update. I checked again could find nothing wrong, did all the updates and still nothing worked. Investigated all the firewall and interfaces and it works. I need the system to work on the external bridge network interface and I can't think of anything else todo. The socket error messages are just Timeout, there is nothing in dmesg, or journal that suggests anything. I am now a complete lost to what is happening and why. Regards David Finch

Last year I made the same setup and even wrote a series of blog articles about 389 DS on CentOS 7, and everything worked perfectly. Looking for C8 AMD help

I'm migrating from C7 to C8. I'm currently using autofs, but alas autofs has been dropped in C8 for the AMD automounter. I have some very ancient knowledge of AMD, I used it when it was first introduced many years ago on Solaris and moved to Sun's automounter when it was introduced. So now it's back to square one. I used automount2amd to convert one of my existing maps, included it in the amd.conf file and tried it out. I don't get any syntax errors so I guess that the map syntax is correct, but amd fails to mount the remote filesystem and generates these errors in messages. CentOS repo question

Hi All, I've just installed a test laptop with CentOS Stream 8.1. I notice that the default install has both CentOS-Base and CentOS-Base-Appstream repos enabled. Is that necessary, or should I just have the Appstream repos enabled. The reason I'm asking is because I'm having trouble updating the installation. The problem seems to be some installed rpms seem to depend on updates from the CentOS-Base repos and others seem to depend on similar updates from the CentOS-Base-Appstream repos and you can't install both. A typical error looks like this. cannot install both qt5-qttools-common-5.12.5-1.el8.0.1.noarch and qt5-qttools-common-5.11.1-9.el8.noarch qt5-qttools-common-5.11.1-9.el8.noarch is from CentOS-Base qt5-qttools-common-5.12.5-1.el8.0.1.noarch is from CentOS-Base-Appstream So updating some installed rpm depends on updating to the Appstream version of qt5-qttools and some other installed rpm depends on the original CentOS-Base version of qt5-qttools. I am rsyncing the data from this system over to another system now, clearly something is wrong, but I can't tell what. The system is an older AMD Opteron 180 processor (dual core) 4 GB ram, RAID controller with RAID 5 set up with 4x 4TB Western Digital Drives.
