Any experience with eSATA and port multiplier...?

Hey, just bought an eSATA/USB dual drive docking station and my CentOS 5 can only see one drive at a time... Any one knows if there are specific parameters to set somewhere? Or do I need a more recent kernel (like upgrading to CentOS 6?) The docking is a Sharkoon Quickport Duo v2 + 2 drives + 1 eSATA cable... http://www.sharkoon.com/?q=en/content/sata-quickport-duo-v2 The eSATA controller is an HighPpoint PciE 2 ports combo eSATA/USB with (supposedly) port-multiplier support Apparently based on an Silicon image Sil 3132 Seems like the port multiplier part does not work correctly... kernel: ata7: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 10) kernel: ata7.15: Port Multiplier 1.1, 0x197b:0x2352 r0, 2 ports, feat 0x0/0x0 kernel: ata7.15: Asynchronous notification not supported, hotplug won't kernel: work on fan-out ports. Use warm-plug instead. kernel: ata7.00: hard resetting link The logs are full of "hard resetting link", "softreset failed" and other "failed to reset PMP, giving up" I did not try to reboot yet... At first it worked well and then user's started to experience a hung site. The PHP session file. Originally I had a tmpfs mounted for the session files. I removed that and used the underlying filesystem. Same issue. I disabled APC. Same issue. Expect to have to tweak the config to cover the stuff you've got installed. You can detect sniffing by checking for promiscuous interfaces on the LAN - use proDETECT (http://sourceforge.net/projects/prodetect/) or a similar tool for this purpose. Sound drop out with totem. mplayer Can't open audio device /dev/dsp

Hey all. This morning I found that my audio playback is randomly sprinkled with sound skips and dropouts. I went to /var/log/yum.log and found this: Feb 09 20:18:22 Updated: lame-3.99.4-2.el6.rf.i686 I'm not saying that caused the problem but it's all I could find that changed. When I ls in /dev there is no dsp entry. That would explain why mplayer Can't open audio device /dev/dsp. I don't know why there is no /dev/dsp. SPF Record questions

I am inquiring about how to setup a proper SPF record. I know there are SPF wizards/generators available but each seem to have a different "opinion" of what should be included and what should not be included. Let me give you a scenario of my setup, and hopefully someone can help me out. My domain is: test.com My mailserver hostname is: mail.host.com which also has a MATCHING PTR record mail.host.com (for example) resolves to 50.1.1.1 and 50.1.1.1 resolves to mail.host.com This is a STANDALONE mail server which will receive and send email without any VIP's or load balancing. There is however one additional host that will send out mail from the domain but it wont be receiving mail, it will only be used as an SMTP (outbound only) server attached to a website automailer which is on a seperate webserver... It only generates error reports and sends them out... so technically it isn't a full mail server but it will be sending (outbound only) mail on behalf of the domain. The additional host is: mail2.test.com which resolves to 50.2.2.2 and there is a Matching PTR. These are the ONLY mail servers and IP addresses that will be sending out mail from the test.com domain. Some websites say I should use -all and others say -all will cause some MTA's to reject and ~all is better to use even if those are the only two hosts sending out mail. Would you be able to assist with a solid SPF record?

CentOS4 desktop has stopped recognizing removable media - haldaemon problem?

USB sticks and cameras used to pop right up on my desktop. Now they don't. I've checked the Gnome "Drives and Media Preferences" and nothing has changed -- I have "Mount removable media when inserted" etc. (Tried toggling it off and back on, no effect.) I've logged out and back in, even rebooted. /var/log/messages shows the devices are being recognized by udev: Jun 27 19:53:37 torch kernel: Attached scsi removable disk sde at scsi11, channel 0, id 0, lun 0 Jun 27 19:53:37 torch scsi.agent[13576]: disk at /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:0b.1/usb1/1-5/1-5:1.0/host11/target11:0:0/11:0:0:0 Jun 27 19:53:37 torch udevd[1347]: udev done! Jun 27 19:53:47 torch udevd[1347]: udev done! However, that's followed by this: Jun 27 19:54:07 torch hald[5179]: Timed out waiting for hotplug event 699. Rebasing to 699 I restarted hald (service haldaemon restart) and it picked up one of the two devices I'd plugged in, but not the other.

smartd and smartctl

A few weeks ago, one of my servers started complaining, via smartd, that one drive had one unreadable sector. I umounted it, and ran an fsck -c, then remounted it. Error didn't go away. Now, what's really annoying is that I've gotten back to it today, and it's reporting the problem, as it has for weeks now, every half an hour. However, when I run > smartctl -q errorsonly -H -l selftest -l error /dev/sdb it gives me *nothing*. Anyone understand why I get two different results? mark "and I am waiting for the smartctl -t long /dev/sdb to complete"

anyone else having flash trouble?

On my centos 5.7 system, using Firefox 10.1, suddenly flash videos have stopped working, like, today. they worked yesterday. Now all I get is an error message that the flash plugin has crashed, reload page and try again. strangely, my centos-6 machine using the same firefox and the same flash plugin works fine. LDAP encryption, not sure.

Hi all, I'm setting up a local LDAP server with a pass-through authentication to another LDAP. I'm not clear about the encryption. Say the case is like this. CompB is set to have LDAP authentication. A ---> SSH ---> CompB ---> Local LDAP:389 ---> SASLAUTHD --> Global LDAP: 636 1. Password on the SSH session would be encrypted, isn't it? 2. How about when it goes to the local LDAP:389, would it be encrypted? Thank you. Fajar.

question on unused directories in /usr/lib and /usr/lib64

I was working on archiving an old virtual server today and was reminded of how much space is wasted by some of the default installations on CentOS. I think this was a 5.x box. Anyway, in /usr/lib/64 (and probably /usr/lib on non-64 systems), there were a lot of directories which have no bearing on a basic server. I saw firefox, openoffice and many, many other directories -- replete with enough files to seriously affect backup space over time. Does anyone have an available script or list of commands for removing most or all of these "generally unused" directories, packages or whatever they are? I found something a while back for shutting off unused services, but this seems to be a gaping hole in available archives. Thanks. CT

Centos 5.7--desktop icons are now a blank sheet of paper with the .desktop filename and they don't work

Just rebooted my box (switched keyboards, and since it's a PS/2 keyboard, it needs to be done at poweroff) and when it came back up, (almost) all the desktop icons I've created (as distinct from the ones that came with the system) now don't display correctly. Instead of the graphic assigned to each, it's just a picture of a blank sheet of paper with the corner folded over, and the icon text is the name of the .desktop file that defines the particular item. worse, when I click one, they don't work... I get a popup window containing this text (when attempting to fire up a local rebuild of Audacity, or the appropriate name when attempting to use one of the other ones): The filename "Audacity (local build).desktop" indicates that this file is of type "desktop document". The contents of the file indicate that the file is of type "desktop configuration file". If you open this file, the file might present a security risk to your system. Do not open the file unless you created the file yourself, or received the file from a trusted source. To open the file, rename the file to the correct extension for "desktop configuration file", then open the file normally. Alternatively, use the Open With menu to choose a specific application for the file. corrupted /etc/mtab

Hello everyone, It seems like we have a corrupted /etc/mtab file and I just wanted to check that my plan of action is correct. df -k returns: df: cannot read table of mounted file systems: No such file or directory ls -la mtab: ?--------- ? ? ? ? ? mtab messages full of errors: EXT3-fs error (device cciss/c0d2p1): ext3_lookup: unlinked inode 847444 in dir #846977 I would like to fsck / partition, but, obviously, can't do it on a live system. The plan is to touch /forcefsck and to force fsck during reboot. Please let me know if you see a problem with my plan or have any other suggestions. Thank you, Asya

bug in repo affecting perl

I seem to running into the following bug when attempting to perform a yum update: http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=5322 I have been skipping perl to move on. However, I am unable to update perl to the latest i386 release due to what appears to be a mistake in the centOS repo. The CentOS mirrors have the following: http://mirrors.kernel.org/centos/5/os/i386/CentOS/perl-5.8.8-32.el5_6.3.i38… http://mirrors.kernel.org/centos/5/os/x86_64/CentOS/perl-5.8.8-32.el5_6.3.x… http://mirrors.kernel.org/centos/5/updates/i386/RPMS/perl-5.8.8-32.el5_7.6.… http://mirrors.kernel.org/centos/5/updates/x86_64/RPMS/perl-5.8.8-32.el5_7.… *http://mirrors.kernel.org/centos/5/extras/x86_64/RPMS/perl-5.8.8-32.el5_6.3.i386.rpm* ??? When I run a "yum list perl" or "yum update perl.i386" all I see is 5.8.8-32.el5_6.3 in the extras repo. It seems like this file shouldn't even exist. If I disable the repo my yum finds nothing for the i386 release of perl, even though the RPM is present in the updates directory. Could a maintainer of the repository please put some emphasis on this 2 month old bug? Thanks, --Blake

QEMU configuration not persistent

Since switching from CentOS 5.7 to CentOS 6.x I find that one of the VMs will not restart upon system reboot. I finally figured out that the video is always set to vmvga after rebooting. In addition the VM's storage always reverts back to IDE from virtio and is set to use the wrong image. It may be related to the fact that I moved the XML files that defined the VMs from the old (CentOS 5.7) /etc/libvirt/qemu directory to the new (CentOS 6.2) /etc/libvirt/qemu directory. The images are stored is the same LVM partitions as they were on the CentOS 5.7 Any ideas why a VM would revert back? I've checked the XML file before rebooting and it always has the correct info in it, until after the reboot. Emmett

Be careful with what you believe. The CPIO archive format in general is worse with resyncing to a defective archive that TAR is. Also note that afio greates arhives that may start to be non CPIO compliant somewhere in the middle. So you can never know whether you are able to restore with anything other than afio. What if afio does not compile on your new platform because it is no longer maintained? Also note that the POSIX standard dropped CPIO as an actively supported archiveformat because (different from TAR) any extention to CPIO results in creating a new incompatible archive format. The following other problems are known with gtar: - gtar is with aprox. 5% probability unable to read it's own continuation archives from multi volume archives. iptables nat PREROUTING chain

Is there a way to add a rule to the nat table (CentOS 5.7) that would alter the port number of tcp packets destined for the server itself? I have ip_forwarding enabled, but the packets don't seem to hit the prerouting chain. I have the following redirect rule in the prerouting table. Dovecot problems

Actually, I'm having problems with pop and imap. I changed mailservers this weekend, going from a Centos 3 box to a Centos 6 box. The Centos 3 box used the old standard imap and pop servers. We use horde for our webmail. The pop3 mailboxes (mbox) were in /var/spool/mail and the imap folders were in /home/user/mail, which horde took care of. Upon starting the Centos 6 box, I ran into tons of login and viewing problems. I tried Cyrus for imap, could log in, but couldn't see mail in the imap folders. Using dovecot for pop, I eventually could get logged in, but kept getting the "couldn't open INBOX" message, so no one could download their email, even though sendmail was delivering it properly. So here's my question: Can (should) dovecot be used for both imap and pop when considering the above setup of mbox in /var/spool/mail and imap folders in ~/mail? Horde will read the mbox to display new messages in it's screens. If so, does anyone have a pretty good link to how to make dovecot function using the old Centos pop/imap scheme? Should I try and convert the old mbox files to another format or destination to make this work? Thanks for any help. It's been a long night, going on about 14 hours now and I'm just getting the old server back to current until I figure this out. steve campbell

I put this page together just so I won't spam the board anymore begging for help..lol http://bobhoffman.com/vmissue.html This shows a working effort of bonded eths, bridged into a vm, and a few other things. The only missing thing is something on the host that ends up putting the VM internet connection into some kind of limbo. Whether it is hardware related, bug related, libvirt nat related, I don't know. I will only post here on this issue again if it ever gets solved. At this point the server is a no go and getting shelved until I can find a tech that knows this stuff and can fix it. right now: unsolvable. I may just put some websites on the host computer until I can find a reliable way of keeping the virtual guest connection 100% up. Hope this helps someone wanting to bridge or bond. bob

MySQL/file system question

Hello listmates, I got a rather strange situation that I can't quite make sense of. OK, I've got a very large data file to sort (hundreds of millions of lines) and I decided to use MySQL for the purpose. I inserted the stuff into a table easily enough. Then I decided to sort it and got stuck as it turned out that MySQL, unless specifically configured to do otherwise, puts temporary files in /tmp which simply was not sufficiently large. Then I changed that directory to a partition that had more space (let's call the new temp driectory /home/big-temp) and now as I am running the query aimed at sorting the data it seems like space, according to the df, is no longer being used up under / (which was there /tmp was) but is now being used up in the right partition ( /home, the large one). Yet /home/big-temp is still empty! So how is that possible? I know there are all kinds of file locking possible depending on the circumstances, file system type, etc - but how can it be that the files, if they exist, are not even visible to ls, even "ls -a", even run by root? so I gave up on bonding. I found about 300 posts showing eth0 and eth1 both pointing to br0 (bridge) as interfaces. I followed them correctly, or so I thought. I pointed both ethx to the bridge, restarted network and bam...!!! entire ip block went out. when I called datacenter they told me the router was under attack and I was like 'uh oh' and told them to just shut off my computer I would be there to fix it. They did not believe me. An hour later I was there and deleted the eth1 point to the br0 and all was fine. Meanwhile they were all around the router trying to stop the attack. (it was just the router for me and others in that room....oops) I wonder if they will boot me from the center now? How is it possible that it did that so quickly? Such an easy way to bring down routers, wow, a hacker could have a field day. Apparently there is more to making to eth ports go to the same bridge than a simple point. I have since tried bridge_ports command as listed online, however that must be deprecated. I think I am just gonna stay with multiple bridges with one eth on each for a while until I can test this stuff in a safe environ. I never had a chance to recover, the second the network came up I lost all contact with my ip block. The ratelimit number got this high by the time I got there. I am testing a chrooted environment for sftp using the internal-sftp subsystem. Now that I seem to have SELinux mostly out of the way, when I do an 'ls -l' after the sftp login I see only numbers for the uids and gids. When I was using scponly I simply had a local version of /etc/passwd and /etc/group but these are evidently not used by the internal sftp subsystem. Anyone already tried to backport the latest ASPM kernel patch to 6.2?

After going from CentOS 5.7 to 6.2, a lot of things turned out to be much better, but there are also quite some regressions. The most obvious one is power consumption on my notebook. It was notably lower before. The ASPM issue introduced in 2.6.38 was widely reported and discussed, and the 6.2 kernel has exacatly this code as a backport. http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commitdi… So I started to experiment with the upstream patch: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git;a=commitd… To make it apply, one needs to change 'pci_is_pcie(pdev)' into 'pdev->is_pcie'. One also needs to fiddle a little with the first chunk. I came up with the patch attached, but unfortunately the new kernel showed no improvement. Most probably I got something wrong. Anyone else here who tried this or is interested in sorting this out? Thanks, Michael

Perl Libraries

Having troubles with perl libraries. Does everyone use yum to install perl modules on CentOS 5.x? I have installed the rpmforge repository. I am having terrible luck with installing libraries though. Needed Mechanize for one script but had all sorts of conflicts. Ended up installing mechanize manually from rpm and adding it to yum exclude. Right now I am trying to get Net::SSH::Perl installed and run this script: http://www.perlhowto.com/execute_commands_on_remote_machines_using_ssh Would think it would be as simple as 'yum install perl-Net-OpenSSH' but it does not work. It installs but perl complains when using it. Is it better to use CPAN instead of yum? For those doing a good deal of perl scripting what are you using to manage libraries? Any pointers would be great.

Hi, Is anyone here running memcached + python2.6 + django setup on a CentOS 5.5?? Am trying to set one up here and have trouble with the python26-memcached installation. So far i have installed (via yum): 1.python26 2. python26-memcached 3. libevent 4. memcached-devel Now when i try to run `import memcache` from the python2.6 shell i get an ImportError: No module named memcache. The python26 installation picks up other modules(django etc..) fine. So there's no configuration problem from python26 interpreter. I am not able to figure out the problem. Any ideas/suggestions? Is building from source my only way out?? Terminal settings with Putty?

Trying to use Putty 0.62 (the most current version I can find) and when I use the c compiler, I see a bunch of terminal codes that obfuscate the output of the compiler. (Teaching my son some programming) Anybody know what I should be setting to what? It's pretty much a CentOS6 server set up with defaults. I have tried to configure http_proxy variable as a "http_proxy="http://DOMAIN\\user:passwd@proxy:port/", but it doesn't works ... I have tried to set http_user and http_passwd also without luck. advice on bind/dns and many sites

hi all, currently my websites are sharing one server, also having bind running on that server for all of them. I am now breaking the sites on to different machines. So what would you do on bond/dns? I was thinking of making two servers as nameservers, one master, one slave, for all my domains. For resolution of the server itself I was originally going to make a recursive caching nameserver for the domains to go to. However, instead I was thinking of running bind as a caching server on each websites machine, with a couple extra points to online servers like googles (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4) I was hoping to limit cpu/mem needs by putting the recursive/caching on a separate machine, but perhaps it is better to put it on each machine. what would you do?

Hi all, My goal is to have PHP 5.2.x on a centos virtual machine (LXC) Looking at the repositories: - 6.2 has php 5.3: ftp://ftp.free.fr/mirrors/ftp.centos.org/6.2/updates/i386/drpms/ - 5.7 has php 5.1 ftp://ftp.free.fr/mirrors/ftp.centos.org/5.7/updates/i386/RPMS/ I'll have to rebuild a source RPM in order to have what I want: - Which base should I install for a php 5.2 VM? 6.2 or 5.7? - Which release of CentOS had a php 5.2 source rpm that I could just rebuild without too much extra patching? Thank you all. Side note: For legacy projects, I'll also have to have a php 4, but there, no problem: ftp://ftp.free.fr/mirrors/ftp.centos.org/4.9/updates/i386/RPMS/ has a php 4.3.9, so, no problem. The machines are simply development machines, on the LAN, in order to keep (very) old projects running if we ever have to get back on them. These are not for public or production use. -- RMA.

starting haldeamon on 6.2

haldaemon on 6.2 is not starting for me. (so I cannot run X). doing dmesg and tail /var/log/messages refeals nothing. doing strace -fv service haldaemon start says that g_malloc_n is not found or undefined symbol What might I be missing? I am fully upto date with yum. (x86_64 ) Very puzzling. I have other boxes running just fine. Its just this one being stubborn. Any thoughts. Did a bunch of searching and seems like they are talking about titanium which I do not have. Thanks Jerry

python26-memcached on centOS 5.5

Hi, Is anyone here running memcached + python2.6 + django setup on a CentOS 5.5?? Am trying to set one up here and have trouble with the python26-memcached installation. So far i have installed (via yum): 1.python26 2. python26-memcached 3. libevent 4. memcached-devel Now when i try to run `import memcache` from the python2.6 shell i get an ImportError: No module named memcache. The python26 installation picks up other modules(django etc..) fine. So there's no configuration problem from python26 interpreter. I am not able to figure out the problem. Any ideas/suggestions? Is building from source my only way out?? fqdn hostname fails after reboot

Hi, I have several machines running CentOS 6.2 and a strange problem with the hostname of one machine... After every reboot it loses the fqdn hostname. Eeek, my centos6 box won't boot after broken update, need help w/ yum

Hello there, I think I've shutdown my box right in the middle of a yum update.. The latest kernel installed won't simple boot, and the old one can, but only in init 3 mode (tty). From a console, I wanted to complete the yum update and it suggested me to do a `yum-complete-transaction`. yum-complete-transaction tells me that 447 elements are left to run in 1 transaction, runs and show lots of "Removing <packagename> - ud from the transaction" then processes lots of stuff, and ends with listing lots of duplicate packages (mostly Xorg stuff) and.. and that's all. Same stuff if I start that command again. A `yum cleanup` doesn't change it. Any hint how I could get of that deadly loop? Regards, -- wwp

sar -n DEV does not show bonded interfaces

Anyone know how to get statistics on bonded interfaces? I have a system that does not use eth0-3, rather we have bond0, bond1, bond2. The members of each bond are not eth0-3, rather they are eth6, eth7, etc. I didn't see anything in the man page about forcing sar to collect data on specific network interfaces.

Centos 5.6 3ware raid 5

Hi, I've seen comments about the poor performance of these cards with raid 5 configs. I have an old card with 3 x 500G IDE drives connected in raid 5 and I'm getting around 10mb/s write performance. :-( I'm seeing high iowait figures at times and associated very high cpu load average figures, probably because, under load, everything is stacked up waiting for the disks to actually do something. A non-raid sata disk in the same machine manages 70mb/s Does anyone know what the performance is like if I used the 3ware just as an IDE controller? I could then switch to software raid5? I have a question about getting PCIe advanced error reporting to work on 5.5. The info I need to start with is the following: 1) Is PCIe Advanced Error Reporting (including error injections) known to work in 5.5? 2) What configuration options do I need to select in order to enable it? I'm using the following configs: CONFIG_ACPI=y CONFIG_PCI=y CONFIG_PCI_DIRECT=y CONFIG_PCI_MMCONFIG=y CONFIG_PCIEPORTBUS=y CONFIG_PCIEAER=y CONFIG_PCIE_ECRC=y CONFIG_PCIE_AER_INJECT=y CONFIG_PCI_DOMAINS=y CONFIG_PCI_MSI=y I also have the kernel boot parameter aerdriver.forceload=y With this config, I see that the relevant devices appear to support Advanced Error Reporting (visible in lspci -v output). However, when I attempt to inject errors to them the injections fail for various reasons. None of them (out of about a dozen candidate devices) succeeds. The aer_inject facility is currently the only means I have of testing this functionality. Note that on the same hardware with a RHEL-6 based (2.6.32) kernel, the injections work correctly. I need to make them also work with 5.5. Before I go and track down those various errors, I want to verify that I have the right kernel and that it's configured correctly. The required code seems to be present in the kernel. I suspect there's something going wrong during driver initialization and device probing. Once again, I need answers to these two specific questions: 1) Is PCIe Advanced Error Reporting (including error injections) known to work in 5.5? 2) What configuration options do I need to select in order to enable it? network intermitent, not sure if virtualization issue

I have a computer I am using to host a virtual machine. Centos 6, for both, 64 bit. The host machine's network connection seems fine. No problems. Trying to access the virtual machine is usually fine. but then, poof, ssh, http, ftp, all lose connection for about a minute. Then they come back up. I looked in all the logs on both machines, could find nothing, but not sure where to look. My question, would this be a setting on the VM as a webserver, some new centos 6 setting that just times out network when not in use? Or something that I did when I bonded my eth ports and bridged them? The bond covers the two onboard eth ports and one port from an add on network card. It is intermittent, seems to happen whenever, but service network restart on the webserver seems to fix it immediately, but it also just fixes itself too. is there some setting with centos 6 that must be changed to allow constant 'uptime' of the network?

SSD Drives

Has anyone installed a high I/O application such as an email server on SSD drives? Was thinking about doing two SSD's in RAID1. It would solve my I/O latency issues but I have heard that SSD's wear out quickly in high I/O situations? Something like each memory location only has X many writes before its done. Just wandering if anyone has tested it and if newer SSD's are better about this?

Problems installing 6.2 on HP 8540w laptop

Folks I've been trying to install Centos 6.2 on an HP Mobile Workstation 8540w. For various reasons, I have restarted the install many times.I use the 64-bit DVD image. The install chooses the following options a) Install with Basic Video Driver b) Skip the media scan c) Default Country, Language, Basic Storage Devices, change time zone d) Fresh Installation e) Configure network, (turn on wired Always Connect). f) Hit ALT-B to get back to examining storage devices. (I found I had to do this to get the HostName field filled in with the defaults from DHCP). [See below, frequent hangs here, in which case I power down and start again] g) If I get beyond the HostName stage, I choose the Virtual Host method and the install goes to completion successfully. The machine is connected with an ethernet cable to a LAN that is my internal NAT'ted system. The wireless button indicates disabled. I have been getting varied results with (presumably) the same starting conditions. In each case, I power off the machine, wait a few seconds, and power it on with the DVD image in place, choose "Install with basic video driver", and go through the same sequence. On many attempts, the installation sequence finishes just right, and the reboot gives me the expected root prompt. The USB mouse does not work during install, so I have to use the keyboard and touch-pad pointers. Among the anomalies I get are: 1) The first "Waiting for hardware to initialize..." is as far as it goes. Usually, it's done in a couple of seconds and goes on to a second hardware scan. Sometimes it hangs for over a minute before I give up. 2) The install appears to come to the end, the DVD is ejected, and I hit ENTER to reboot. The reboot starts and the screen goes dark. Power down and power up to boot from HD succeeds, but there was a flash of about three lines on the screen before the blue sliding bar appeared. 3) The install sequence hangs with the screen all blue except for the bottom line which reads "Running anaconda 13.21.149, the CentOS installer, Please wait ... Then after about a minute the screen blinks and goes dark. 4) The install sequence hangs on "Media Detected - Found local installation media", the CD drive idled down. 5) The install sequence hangs on "Examining Devices, Examining storage devices, with the blue slider almost at the left edge. Although this screen appears several times, the instance that hangs is the one after I've activated the wired network and hit Back. In most cases, if the system gets to the point of choosing the Virtual Host option, the installation completes successfully. So, -- is this an issue with the install procedure? Does it not treat this hardware correctly? Is there some other startup method or option I could use?

And at this point I have working VM from the tar copy, _except_ that it isn't matching a driver to the virtual NIC. I'm glad I'm not restoring a real backup with a dead machine here... new mysql installation, kinda stuck

I installed centos 6 as a webserver. It installed mysql. However, I guess I need mysql-server for me to use it for php and my website. I installed that. I am unable to give root a password and can go no further. I have tried mysql-secure-installation and I just get stuck at errors and no progression. I have tried mysqladmin -u root password <password> and the accompanying one that includes the hostname. ERROR 1045 (28000): Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: YES) I am unable to use mysql with php or do anything at all with it. It was strange it installed mysql but I guess this version is different and needs more packages to work within a webserver. all attempts at using mysql without mysql-server installed just results in nothing being found (like mysqld) and the like...so I had to install the server. In 5.x I could just use mysqladmin and add roots, delete anonymous, etc. However, this time I am stuck. I uninstalled mysql-server, the perl thing that comes with it, and mysql itself, then reinstalled them, that got me no where. gotta be something I am missing here. thanks for listening.

A long time after setting up my CentOS6, I decided to create a partition in extended area for my personal data, and to automount it at boot. This is done in fstab with: /dev/sda8 /storage/data ext4 noatime,nodiratime 0 0 (see how I rely on sda, silly me!) I grabbed the UUID from `lshal` and replaced it in fstab: UUID=005374e2_5c18_437d_84d8_8069868fe54e ext4 noatime,nodiratime 0 0 .. no luck, it doesn't automount at boot. Hello listmates, This is not specifically CentOS-related - though I will probably execute this design on CentOS if I decide to do so. It will certainly be some kind of Linux. At any rate, here's my situation. I would like to build a fairly large storage solution (let us say, 100 TB). I want this solution to be distributed and redundant. I want to be able to lose part of the machines involved and still stay operational (the bigger part, the better). I would prefer to avoid having to buy large servers to accomplish this task. What I am soliciting here is thoughts, reports from experience, recommendations, etc. Thanks in advance. Boris.

Google video chat on 5.7 using the Fedora RPM

I've tried to use the Google recommended RPM to enable video chat on 5.7. Get a long list of unsatisfied dependencies. Has anyone got this to work and not created a boat full of problems? Is this something that does work in 6 and just not in 5.7 - another reason to jump in and update? Please advise. Thanks.

gtar compression achieved

Hey folks, I looked at the man page and don't see any way to do this - maybe it is a function of the compression program used I dunno. Is there any way to get gtar to report on the compression it achieved? I can't just check file sizes because I'm writing data to tape. Hey folks, I'm reading up on gtar for tape archiving and it sounds kind of nasty and not something I really want to rely on. It looks like star from the schily tools is preferred. I'm using Centos (and RHEL) 5.7 which seems to have star but not sdd. Which leads me to believe that the Schily tools are maybe a bit "rogue" My basic requirement with what I'm doing is to use standard tools and formats so that archives I write today can be readable in 10 years. Is the use of Schily tools going to be contrary to my basic requirement? MySQL on CentOS 6 broken? No 'mysql' database?

Configuration Compliance auditing for many CentOS 5.x boxes

Hi CentOS experts,* Short Version* I would like to produce a weekly report in HTML for each CentOS 5.x server we have indicating configuration compliance with some industry benchmark. I am looking for a tool or tools to implement this, I am happy to use 3rd party proprietary stuff if necessary. * Long(er) Version* Current Situation.. I have a client with many (200x) CentOS 5.x servers deployed in various web, mail, database and file server roles, and these boxes have been variously administrated to a lessor or greater degree. All the boxes have EPEL repository included as part of their base-install, and all boxes have cron jobs for "yum -y update" running frequently, and are rebooted when kernels are available. (so they are not in a terrible state) For network, local and external vulnerabilities - We use a 3rd party firm, who use WebInspect to monitor for external facing ports and vulnerable services and produce various regular reports to my boss. (hence am not looking at Nessus, OpenVAS or network based scanning tools right now, or indeed any vulnerability tools) However we now have a New Big Boss in Town - who is an ex security compliance dude. The new rules are; that if its not being regularly tested, then its not in compliance, even if it is in compliance etc. (to be honest, I quite like that rule) So now I am looking for a way to generate a report of server compliance with some compliance standard for all the boxes regularly. We have a basic list of configuration settings, that is a weaker form of various compliance recommendations, so I am confident that most compliance benchmarks like CIS, EAL3 or the linux web STIG level would be sufficient. We have chef installed on the CentOS instances, hence I can push out yum based packages, (and I can install from source tarballs, but it will make me cry, on these instances) I Would like to have... a tool that runs locally on each CentOS box and produces a reasonably comprehensive html report regarding configuration compliance (and a massive bonus would be to send email alert for severe problems, but I can script that if required) Ideally I could generate a weekly report that indicates compliance with 1 or more of the recognised linux server benchmarks. I am happy to pay for a subscription for the checklist, but I suspect the kind per instance 100 USD licenses I see are going to blow my budget. Current progress is... I see that OPENSCAP and OVAL have tools in CentOS-base or EPEL, such as OpenSCAP-utils ovaldi - oval reference interpreter Which can be used to create reports. However they seem a little unrefined. For SCAP and OVAL content I have found the following. 1. NIST provide SCAP content for RHEL desktop, which is kinda close; 2. http://usgcb.nist.gov/usgcb/rhel_content.html 3. There is a tool called sectool in the fedora repos, but I can't get it to run on CentOS due to a missing python-slip module. Any suggestions on functioning stacks for this problem would be helpful. mysql won't start with service, but starts with mysqld_safe

Just installed mysql on centos 6.2. When I try to start it with service I get: #service mysqld start MySQL Daemon failed to start. Starting mysqld: [FAILED] Nothing at all is written to the error log. But if I start it with mysqld_safe it comes up and works fine. Anyone know what's going on here? -larry

How to boot into a different kernel

CentOS Community, Is there a command to boot into a different version of the kernel? I believe this is setup via grub.conf but unsure. There are a few different kernels loaded into /boot but I want to see if there is a command to boot into a different kernel as a single instance or permanent if needed. CentOS 6.2 New Kernel Issues

CentOS 6.2 Community / Developers, Are there any known issues with the latest Kernel on CentOS 6.2? I performed a yum update and the kernel downloaded. When the system rebooted I started having intermittent latency issues when trying to perform certain commands on the system such as top or ls -ltr, etc. I was having extreme latency getting to root. I am unsure if there is a hardware compat issue but I found my server in kernel PANIC mode the next day and was unable to login entirely. Has this been reported before?

install detecting disk as sdb not sda

I am trying to install 6.2 on a machine. I am using PXE as I have done so a number of times. My hard disk is being detected as sdb and not sda. My kickstart config is wanting it at sda. There are no other disks in the unit. It has and SD slot and an esata although BIOS does not appear to have a disable for either of those devices. Is there anyway to "force" the disk to sda ? or find out what its detecting at sda and disable that from the PXE boot line? Doing " dmesg | grep sda" does say SCSI removable disk. So how can I tell linux to NOT include that when installing? Thanks, jerry

The mail server doesn't know what IP address will be presented to the remote machine, so it can't pick the correct name for the HELO.
