turning off udev for eth0

I have set up a kvm host and configured a standard clone prototype for generating new guests. One persistent (pun intended) annoyance when cloning is the behaviour of udev with respect to the virtual network interface. The prototype is configured with just eth0 having a dedicated IP addr. When the prototype is cloned udev creates rules for both eth0 and eth1 in the clone. Because eth1 does not exist in the cloned guest one has to manually edit /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules to get rid of the bogus entries and then restart the clone instance to have the changes take effect. All this does is return the new guest to the prototype eth0 configuration. Is there no way to alter udev's behaviour? Is udev even needed on a server system using virtual hardware? Altering the rules file not a big deal in itself but it adds needless busywork when setting up a new guest. -- *** E-Mail is NOT a SECURE channel *** James B. Corrupt mbr and disk directory map

We are running Centos 5.6. All was fine until yesterday. I attempted to tar a 14KB work file to a USB floppy (/dev/sdb) for transport to another server. Unfortunately, I keyed in 'tar cvf /dev/sda filename' instead of 'tar cvf /dev/sdb filename'. /dev/sda is our main (boot/root/apps) scsi hard drive. I realized my mistake, but it was too late. The system is still powered up and running, but I am sure that I have overlaid (and trashed) the mbr and the disk directory map. When I run the 'fdisk /dev/sda' command, the console displays: "Device contains neither a valid DOS partition table, nor Sun, SGI or OSF disklabel. Building a new DOS disklabel. Changes will remain in memory only, until you decide to write them. After that, of course, the previous content won't be recoverable." When I run grub and enter 'find /grub/stage1', the console displays "Error 15: File not found" I suspect that when I power the system down, it will not reboot. I can reinstall mbr and grub, but I don't have the original partition table start/end values. Since the system is still running, it seems that the partition table must still be available to it from somewhere. Is there any way to easily restore the partition table? The system is completely backed up and can be restored if necessary, but I prefer a quick and simple solution, if possible. Any ideas? Thanks

selinux context for mm-handler?

I've got a Mailman installation running on CentOS 4 that I'd like to migrate to a CentOS 6 box. My big obstacle at present is getting Mailman's mm-handler Perl script to run as a Sendmail local mailer with SELinux enabled. A simplistic parental-control setup

I am looking at the simplest (implementation-wise) solution to the following problem (on CentOS 6.2): I have a list of web addresses (like http://www.example.com, https://1.2.3.4/, etc.) that should be "forbidden" to access from a particular host. On access attempt, the browser should be redirected to a local web page (file on the hard disk) with the explanation that those addresses are forbidden. The possible ways of disallowed access include: * typing www.example.com or http://1.2.3.4/ in the browser * typing www.example.com/anyfolder/somefile.html in the browser * clicking on www.example.com when listed as a link on some other web site (say, Google search results) * nothing else. The last point above assumes that the users will never try any other method of accessing the site. These user's knowledge about computers in general is known to be elementary, so I don't need protection against geniouses who can figure out some obscure way to circumvent the lockdown (and please don't tell me that this is an irrational assumption, I know it is...). If possible, all this should be on a "per user" basis, but if implementing it system-wide would be much simpler, I could live with it. :-) The point is that I need a simple, easy-to-implement, easy-to-configure and easy-to-maintain solution for this particular usecase. What I don't need is some over-engineered solution that covers my usecase along with a whole bunch of stuff I will never need, and takes two months to configure properly. It should also be F/OSS, preferably included in CentOS repos or elsewhere. Or alternatively I could go along with manually setting up a bogus httpd/dns/iptables configuration which would do all this, but I have a feeling that it would not be the easiest thing to maintain... dhcp lease-time

Why is the default lease-time set to only 10 minutes (600 seconds) in /etc/dhcp/dhcpd.conf (CentOS-6.2) as distributed? Why is not set to a much longer time? Is there any disadvantage in doing that? Cannot use kickstart file to install CentOS 6.2 into a blank harddisk

I am trying using a kickstart file to install CentOS 6.2 into a new virtual machine (the MBR sector of the harddisk is all zero), however I found that the installer cannot go through the harddisk partition. It failed after I chose "Use All Space" at harddisk partition option. The error message is: http://anony.ws/i/bMcTJ.png "You have not defined a root partition (/), which is required for installation of CentOS to continue. You have not created a/boot/efi partition (note: I am using BIOS, not (U)EFI) This can happen if there is not enough space on your harddrive(s) for installation." However, if I create a blank MBR partition table before before CentOS installation, then there is no problem. The same kickstart file works for CentOS 6.1 with blank harddisk. (with url parameter changed of course) Below is the kickstart file I used (between dash lines) ------- url --url="http://ftp.twaren.net/Linux/CentOS/6.2/os/i386/" interactive timezone Asia/Hong_Kong firstboot --enable ------- Steps to reproduce: 1. create a new virtual machine with blank harddisk image (or, a real blank harddisk) 2. boot the netinstall iso 3. at boot menu, press tab and append ks=<kickstart_file_location> and press enter to boot 4. go through the boot option as usual until harddisk partition options 5. Choose "Use All Space" at harddisk partition options 6. error occurs

fail2ban won't die

If I lose my broadband connection here (Italy), and try to re-boot the computer (CentOS-6.2), the shutdown hangs at fail2ban. Normally there is no problem re-booting; it only happens if the network has gone down. It may just be an extraordinarily long timeout. Has anyone experienced this? ASP running on a Linux Machine

Good morning all, I currently have a website that was written in ASP back in 1999. The system is currently running Windows 2003 Server with MsSQL. Before everyone flames me for being in the wrong place, I was wondering if there is a way to allow centos to run old ASP code? I know years ago this wasn't possible without a program like ChiliASP, but noow I heard rumor that apache might have a plugin to allow it to read ASP. I am unsure if there is an apache solution, or other solution like nginx/lighttpd that runs ASP. Any information you guys could provide would be great. I do appreciate your help in advance PS. I will need to convert the mssql data to mysql, is there any good program that will convert this? I understand that this question is probably inappropriate for this e-mail thread but maybe someone could shoot me a quick suggestion.

local repositories

I need a clarification to the documentation. My manager added a 6.2 repo; however, when I try doing pxeboot installs, it fails, asserting that it can't find the group info. Another admin I work with thinks it's not really what it's failing in, and notes that it 404's on images/updates.img and images/product.img. We *think* that's irrelevant and ok. What is not clear to me is when we run createrepo, what directory you need to be in at the time you execute it. mark

Greetings, I have a freshly installed Centos 6.2 box with everything (darn! I had to hand select each and every package -- IIRC one of the fedora versions had a nice "select all" checkbox). My questions are: 1. Can somebody suggest a way to select all packages while installing from DVD? 2. Can somebody suggest a versioning system which integrates well with a bug tracking system (I had installed Subversion with Trac more than a couple of years back on Centos 5.x for some customer -- but it was a kludge as it required many things not provided with stock Centos 5.x like some python some php 5.2 etc.) TIA, -- Regards, Rajagopal A proud promoter of Centos for over 5 years

vmware fusion display auto-size problem

Greetings. I am running vmware fusion 4.1.1 on a OSX host. Centos6.2 is a guest. The box is a macbook laptop running leopard. Before upgrading to 6.2, the display auto-resize (or auto-fill) was working fine. After 6.2, it has stopped working. Centos is fully updated to 6.2. I have tried to install the vmware drivers from the repository (via yum), and yum reports I have the latest. Vmware reports I have the latest version of app and linux tools. I have uninstalled and re-installed vmware tools to no avail. During the vmware tools install it returns a statement that it does not have drivers for x. Anybody else come across this? Google and vmware sites either do not have any info, or I am asking the wrong question. This being my first foray into vmware, is it advisable not to run updates until needed? What is best practice in this config? Thanks in advance for your help. Monty

vsftpd log issues

I have an up-to-date CentOS 6 with reasonable amount of ftp activity (a dozen of network cameras uploading images every second 24x7). The first issue was that the whole /var filesystem was about to get full, because of huge ftp daemon log. vsftpd.conf says: # You may override where the log file goes if you like. The default is shown # below. xferlog_file=/var/log/vsftpd.log Ok, the above works now. But while the setting was (by default) commented out, the default wasn't /var/log/vsftpd.log but /var/log/xferlog which was growing without limits (it was over 6 GB when I first time noticed the problem) since logrotate tried to rotate vsftpd.log -rw------- 1 root root 0 Dec 31 03:07 vsftpd.log -rw------- 1 root root 39134459 Dec 31 12:19 vsftpd.log.1 -rw------- 1 root root 433305200 Dec 30 22:03 xferlog Now, after uncommenting the log file setting line in the conf the next issue is, that logrotate does rotate the log files (the old one gets .1 postfix added to its name and a new file is created), but it still keeps writing to the original file (which is renamed now) In the ls -l listing above: - vsftpd started to write log vsftpd.log around 10pm last night (when I uncommented the log setting from the conf and restarted the daemon, until that it was logging to xferlog) - during the night logrotate has changed the name of the existing log file to ...log.1 but now, several hours later, this renamed old file is still used for logging, and the new ...log file remains empty! Is there some simple option in logrotate's conf that could change this behaviour? Or how to fix this. There must be many others who already have run into this issue. Regards, Timo

Passwords apparently stopped working.

I encountered a couple of strange events with respect to password authentication this morning. Two of our staff were unable to login onto several systems using their usual passwords. Both users had last logged in on these hosts using their accounts and passwords on Friday past. The two accounts could not log on to any of the servers for which they had access and the message log on each showed that access was denied for a failed password. The systems involved were running either CentOS-4.9 or CentOS-5.7. So, the effect was uniform across multiple hardware and software platforms. I also checked these accounts against our warm backup machine and encountered the same problems for both. I verified that the passwords being used were correct for the accounts. I also verified that neither of passwords had been reset in some months and there were no expiry dates set for the accounts. I would accept the coincidence of both forgetting their passwords except for the fact that each had kept a record of their password in their wallets and I was able to confirm those values against our records as well. Resetting both the passwords to their current values using the passwd utility on each system corrected the problem insofar as the users were concerned. However, I am somewhat perplexed as to the reason for their passwords to stop working in the first place. Can't find qemu-kvm

I just installed CentOS 6.2 32 bit today. When I try to start the Virtual Machine Manager I get a error: Packages required for KVM usage The following packages are not installed: qemu-kvm These are required to create KVM guests locally. Would you like to install them now? If I click on the [YES] button I'm told that the packages could not be found in any software source. 'last' command doesn't include ssh connections made by this perl script?

My home machine has IP 50.54.225.130. I have (for the purposes of this experiment) one remote machine at www.peacefire.org (69.72.177.140) and another at www.junkwhale.com. When I'm logged in to peacefire, I run this perl script to open an ssh connection to junkwhale and run a command: my $hostname="www.junkwhale.com"; my $server_password = "[redacted!]"; use Net::SFTP; use Net::SSH::Perl; my $ssh = Net::SSH::Perl->new($hostname); $ssh->login("root", $server_password); my($stdout, $stderr, $exit) = $ssh->cmd("pwd"); print "Stdout: $stdout\n"; print "Stderr: $stderr\n"; If I then log in by ssh to junkwhale from my home computer and run grep 'Accepted password' /var/log/secure the last two lines are: Jan 2 13:23:17 e2180-20059 sshd[12635]: Accepted password for root from 69.72.177.140 port 1023 ssh2 Jan 2 13:23:28 e2180-20059 sshd[12684]: Accepted password for root from 50.54.225.130 port 52484 ssh2 which is correct -- the first line is from the perl script connecting from Peacefire (69.72.177.140) and the second line is for the connection I just opened from my home computer. If, however, I run the "last" command, the first two lines are just: root pts/0 50-54-225-130.ev Mon Jan 2 13:23 still logged in root pts/0 50-54-225-130.ev Mon Jan 2 01:52 - 01:52 (00:00) In other words, the "last" command doesn't list the connection opened up by the Perl script. It only lists the times that I've connected by opening a connection manually with my SSH client. Presumably that means the connection with the perl script is not being logged in /var/log/wtmp , although the contents of the file are binary so I couldn't make much sense of them directly with a screen dump. This makes me wonder two things: 1) What is the difference, from the server's point of view, between the connection opened by the script and the one opened by my ssh client; and 2) More seriously, whatever it is that's different about the connection opened by the perl script, isn't it a bug that that connection is not recorded in wtmp? If admins frequently use the "last" command to determine who has logged into the server, couldn't an attacker do this to avoid detection? Bennett

raid resync deleting data?

Hello, I have a c5 box with a 6 drive raid 6 array. I was going away over Christmas so I was shutting the machine down, I noticed a raid resync (on the raid 6 array) so i stopped it, using the command # echo "idle" > /sys/block/md5/md/sync_action then shut the machine down. A week later I turned the machine on and started copying data to it around 24 hours later a raid resync occurred and wiped all the new data I had copied to it. To me this seems broken, is it because I manually stopped a previous resync that it got in this state? Any ideas? As for log messages there is nothing in the /var/log/messages file, only Jan 2 19:38:39 bolivia kernel: md: syncing RAID array md5 Jan 2 19:38:39 bolivia kernel: md: minimum _guaranteed_ reconstruction speed: 1000 KB/sec/disc. what percent of time are there unpatched exploits against default config?

Suppose I have a CentOS 5.7 machine running the default Apache with no extra modules enabled, and with the "yum-updatesd" service running to pull down and install updates as soon as they become available from the repository. (Assume further the password is strong, etc.) On the other hand, suppose that as the admin, I'm not subscribed to any security alert mailing lists which send out announcements like "Please disable this feature as a workaround until this hole is plugged", so the machine just hums along with all of its default settings. So the machine can still be broken into, if there is an unpatched exploit released in the wild, in the window of time before a patch is released for that update. On the other hand, at any point in time where there are no unpatched exploits in the wild, the machine should be much harder to break into. Roughly what percent of the time is there such an unpatched exploit in the wild, so that the machine can be hacked by someone keeping up with the exploits? 5%? 50%? 95%? Hopefully this is specific enough that the answer is not "it depends" :) , an actual numeric answer should exist -- although I don't know if anyone has ever tried to work it out. But if not, then what's a good guess, based on observing how frequently root exploits are released in the wild, and how long the patches usually take. Bennett

(Tried sending this before but it doesn't look like it went through; apologies if you're seeing it twice.) OK, a second machine hosted at the same hosting company has also apparently been hacked. Since 2 of out of 3 machines hosted at that company have now been hacked, but this hasn't happened to any of the other 37 dedicated servers that I've got hosted at other hosting companies (also CentOS, same version or almost), this makes me wonder if there's a security breach at this company, like if they store customers' passwords in a place that's been hacked. (Of course it could also be that whatever attacker found an exploit, was just scanning that company's address space for hackable machines, and didn't happen to scan the address space of the other hosting companies.) So, following people's suggestions, the machine is disconnected and hooked up to a KVM so I can still examine the files. I've found this file: -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1358 Oct 21 17:40 /home/file.pl which appears to be a copy of this exploit script: http://archive.cert.uni-stuttgart.de/bugtraq/2006/11/msg00302.html Note the last-mod date of October 21. No other files on the system were last modified on October 21st. However there was a security advisory dated October 20th which affected httpd: http://mailinglist-archive.com/centos-announce/2011-10/00035-CentOSannounce… https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2011-1392.html and a large number of files on the machine, including lots of files in */ usr/lib64/httpd/modules/* and */lib/modules/2.6.18-274.7.1.el5/kernel/* , have a last-mod date of October 20th. So I assume that these are files which were updated automatically by yum as a result of the patch that goes with this advisory -- does that sound right? So a couple of questions that I could use some help with: 1) The last patch affecting httpd was released on October 20th, and the earliest evidence I can find of the machine being hacked is a file dated October 21st. This could be just a coincidence, but could it also suggest that the patch on October 20th introduced a new exploit, which the attacker then used to get in on October 21st? (Another possibility: I think that when yum installs updates, it doesn't actually restart httpd. So maybe even after the patch was installed, my old httpd instance kept running and was still vulnerable? As for why it got hacked the very next day, maybe the attacker looked at the newly released patch and reverse-engineered it to figure out where the vulnerabilities were, that the patch fixed?) 2) Since the */var/log/httpd/* and /var/log/secure* logs only go back 4-5 weeks by default, it looks like any log entries related to how the attacker would have gotten in on or before October 21st, are gone. (The secure* logs do show multiple successful logins as "root" within the last 4 weeks, mostly from IP addresses in Asia, but that's to be expected once the machine was compromised -- it doesn't help track down how they originally got in.) Anywhere else that the logs would contain useful data?

Checkinstall rpm for CentOS-6 x86_64?

I cannot seem to find a checkinstall rpm package for CentOS-6 or one for x86_64 more recent than CentOS4. When I try to build it locally from the most recent source I can find, c.2006, I get build errors having to do with size constants either missing or improperly defined. Ever since someone told me that one of my servers might have been hacked (not the most recent instance) because I wasn't applying updates as soon as they became available, I've been logging in and running "yum update" religiously once a week until I found out how to set the yum-updatesd service to do the equivalent automatically (once per hour, I think). Since then, I've leased dedicated servers from several different companies, and on all of them, I had to set up yum-updatesd to run and check for updates -- by default it was off. Why isn't it on by default? Or is it being considered to make it the default in the future? Power users can always change it if they want; the question is what would be better for the vast majority of users who don't change defaults. In that case it would seem better to have updates on, so that they'll get patched if an exploit is released but a patch is available. If the risk is that a buggy update might crash the machine, then that has to be weighed against the possibility of *not* getting updates, and getting hacked as a result -- usually the latter being worse. After all, if users are exhorted to log in to their machines and check for updates and apply them, that implies that the risk of getting hosed by a buggy update is outweighed by the risk of getting hacked by not applying updates. If that's true for updates that are applied manually, it ought to be true for updates that are downloaded and applied automatically, shouldn't it? Bennett

NFS options in fstab

Hi All, I've a quick question I'm hoping someone can help out on; One of our NFS servers has an intermittent hard lock problem under high load. This is a CentOS 5.7 box. It's due for replacement sometime next year. However... The issue is when this box dies the boxes that mount the NFS exports have trouble with the mount and some processes time out casing the system mounting the file system to become unresponsive also. Of course un-monuting the file system with -l fixes it. This is an example of our current mount options in fstab hostname:/share1/ /mountpoint nfs rw,intr,soft,bg 0 0 The question is, what (other) options should we be using to allow the mounting server to ignore/fail/timeout the mount, or at least continue normal processing, when the NFS server packs up? FYI we can't move to NFS4 since we've some old boxes running Solaris 8 mounting this filesystem also, which cannot be upgraded Solaris 10 to support v4. All the best Dan

Hi List, Just loaded our favorite OS onto my new ASUS laptop. Practically everything worked out of the box - I used the live DVD to check things out and installed from there. I have followed http://forum.notebookreview.com/asus-gaming-notebook-forum/553474-g73-asus-… to get suspend working and also to get function keys working for LCD screen backlight controls working (Fn F5 and Fn F6). Upon further searches I find that there is a kernel module asus-wmi.ko available in some distros that also allows some of the other Asus functions to operate - of particular interest is the keyboard backlight (Fn F3 and Fn F4) as well as the master backlight on/off key to function. Question, does anyone know where and how to locate this (asus-wmi.ko) and get it functioning under CentOS 6.2? I am prepared to set up the required build environment - but need some assistance as this is really at the limits of my experience. I have rebuilt the kernel to remove patches with some success previously and will have to dust off this knowledge if required. TIA

Can anyone point me to a tutorial on using Active Directory to authenticate a centos 6 server? I just want to use it to authenticate, ssh and restrict access to a particular ad group. I prefer to use the lightest method possible. I know you can use ldap, or winbind, etc. I have been trying to follow the ones I have been googling, but none of them seem "quit complete. My issue is that I have no ldap experience. Dnk

Hello listmates. It appears that in order to authenticate a Mac OS X Lion client via NIS the passwords in passwd and passwd.byname maps need to be MD5 encrypted. How do I see what encryption has been used in my maps? How do I change it? Thanks. Boris.

I'm experimenting with 6.2 now. Things seem to be really great so far! Distribution closure is one of my favourite pets. So I tried to install everything. I found only one problem, but that's another (minor) thing. But I found almost nothing under /usr/lib. So, Biarch is really dead? Funny! A couple of years back, I finally opted for CentOS instead of Debian just because of Biarch ... I'm getting real old ... -Michael

Hyper V integration question

Hello everyone, I have Hyper V integration working properly, but needed to do an update to 2.6.18-274.12.1.el5-x86_64. Since then, it no longer works. As discovered previously, one needs to rebuild Hyper V Integration tools due to the kernel panic. http://www.sudonym.com/398/kernel-panic-after-yum-update-centos-with-hyper-… Done. But I'm getting an error message: "Your system DOES NOT support the timesource driver" when running make. adjtimex is installed - adjtimex-1.20-2.1. Any ideas? I've successfully followed the same steps in the past, but right now they are just not working. Thank you! Asya

Plymouth "Failed to read image"

I'm trying to learn more about Plymouth, but am having trouble finding sufficient documentation on it. After a rebuild of Plymouth with a few theme changes, I am getting an error message on boot "Failed to read image" and then it gives me the grub screen to boot one of the three kernels installed. Boot works fine and I actually see the proper splash once I select a kernel. Changing themes works, etc. The single problem is that weird message about image read failure. So my question: Since Plymouth actually is working fine after the 5 second delay, just what image is it that can't be read? Is this a message about, say, the "background image" for the menu (the screen background *is* black, actually) or the "ramfs boot image" which apparently works just fine after a moment? Perhaps the error message is just confusing me. If it is just the background image, then what is not valid about the splash.xpm.gz now? I've reduced it to 14 indexed colors, 640x480 resolution (which I thought were the criteria?).

VMware tools not installing init.d script

Has anyone else seen this on Centos 6.x x64? Running vSphere 5.0 and I install tools from the VMware tar.gz file with ' vmware-install-tools.pl -d' it seems to do all the usual/right things. Once completed there is no 'vmware-tools' listed in 'chkconfig --list'. A reboot of the box leaves vmware tools not running. I have tried completely uninstalling tools and re-installing, not difference. Cheers.

I am having an issue I have not ran into before... I set my box to "auto" login by changing the file: more /etc/gdm/custom.conf # GDM configuration storage [daemon] AutomaticLoginEnable=true AutomaticLogin=silentm TimedLoginEnable=true TimedLogin=silentm TimedLoginDelay=0 [security] [xdmcp] [greeter] [chooser] [debug] It does auto login - however then when I try to VNC into the box I get the message about the "gnome remote desktop enter password for default keyring to unlock". I do have a VNC password set. I did some searching but the things I found did not make a difference. Any thoughts? Jerry

Hi every: I have a test or development environment in my Windows workstation with VMware Workstation 8.0 where I have around 7 VM with CentOS 6.2 and each of them have 2 network interfaces: one bridge and the other NAT. Since a few days I have been experimenting some problems with Putty because I get this error: --------------------------- PuTTY Fatal Error --------------------------- Network error: Software caused connection abort --------------------------- OK --------------------------- I did not touch any SSH configuration so I can't see where the problem is, any help or solution to this? Hello, Just upgrade to 6.2 but have not been able to run a newer kernel than 2.6.32-131.12.1.el6.x86_64. I'm getting the error at boot, Not syncing: VFS Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0) I have google this error and see a lot of the same but no clear answers. Any help would be appreciated. I'm trying to setup sendmail/dovecot on a new server running CentOS-6 (well, CentOS-6.2 now). kernel panic/abort during boot

Just did an in-place update from 6.1 to 6.2 on my eeepc 901 (Atom CPU). during boot, (if I hit ESC to see the boot messages) it says "starging udev" then nothing else for a few seconds, then a huge register dump scrolls by. it's too big to see the beginning of it. If I boot from the prior kernel and look in /var/log/messages, I don't see any evidence of the failed boot. I've seen the other thread titled "kernel panic", and it seems to be due to a missing initramfs, but there is an initramfs for 2.6.32-220.el6 already in /boot, so I don't think that would be the problem. is centos bugzilla borked?

I managed to get an account set up on the centos bugzilla, after futzing with it for a half hour, but for the life of me I cannot get to the page where I would enter a new one. my browser just says "transferring data from bugs.centos.org" and sits there with the little thingie going round and round. for an hour or more. disconnect and try again. same thing. I've been trying for over two hours to enter a bug and this is all I can get. So, the inevitable question of its "borked-ness" state arises. the reason it took me as long as stated to get an account set up was because of similar shenanigans on the various pages one needed to go thru to do the account creation. but at least it worked after a while. Suggestions, anyone? Pass iPhone/iTouch through kvm to Win7 VM?

I'm all Linux at home and trying to get a Win7 running in a VM on CentOS 5.6 and kvm to connect to my iTouch and iPhone. When I plug the iPhone in and run lsusb I get an address of 05AC:12A0 I put that into a hostdev block in the xml file that defines the VM. <hostdev mode='subsystem' type='usb' managed='no'> <source> <vendor id='0x0781'/> <product id='0x554f'/> </source> </hostdev> But...no joy. Anyone get kvm to pass an iTouch or iPhone through to the VM so it can communicate with iTunes? Dave

lm-sensors on Sun hardware

Hey guys and gals, Anyone have any experience with getting lm-sensors to run on Sun hardware? In particular Sunfire x2250 and x4170 I was running 5.3 on these boxes and sensors-detect would not find anything. I did a bit of research and as I recall thanks to this list discovered some bugs that were affecting me, so upgraded to 5.7. CPU temp sensors were then detected, but no fan sensors. I do all installs using boot.iso file and installing all packages from mirror.centos.org, but where is boot.iso file for CentOS 6.2?? I don't see it under repository tree ... CentOS 6.2 and VirtualBox 4.1.8

Okay, I go through the install and it reboots, but I have no Network (using the "Bridged Adapter"). Think I've run into a Catch-22. Now I'm trying to "Install Guest Additions" and it requires the "kernel-devel". Okay, not I'm trying to mount the DVD1 (iso), but linux is showing it as empty (no files). But if I mount this on a 5.7 VM, it shows the files. Ideas? Frank M. KVM guests failed to start after 6.2 upgrade

I tore my hair out for a while after rebooting into 6.2 because none of the VM guests would start. After trying lots of things, like down grading qemu-kvm (which fixed it when I upgraded via the CR repository and didn't this time), cloning a VM, and even beginning to create new VM to restore from backup. Luckily I discovered that there is a log for each VM and found in each case it failed because vmvga is not compiled into KVM. So I changed them all to cirrus via virt-manager and they all work again. The host machine is all up to date and all of the guest start and operate as usual. Emmett

6.2 and login.defs

Hi, After the 6.2 upgrade, the new /etc/login.defs has: ENCRYPT_METHOD SHA512 instead of MD5Is it safe to just apply the change? Will my current MD5 passwords in /etc/passwd still work and only new passwords will be SHA512? Or are they automatically "converted" (rehashed) to SHA512? Thx, JD

6.2 Radeon HDMI audio gotcha

I had some trouble (now solved) with the recent upgrade to 6.2. There was no sound from the DVI/HDMI output and video played back much too fast. Booting kernel-2.6.32-131.21.1.el6.x86_64 restored sound and video playback. The solution is to add 'radeon.audio=1' to the kernel arguments from grub and the new kernel also worked. I'm using CentOS 6 on a media computer with the following graphics chip: 01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RS880 [Radeon HD 4200] 01:05.1 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc RS880 HDMI Audio [Radeon HD 4200 Series] The Linux 3.0 kernel has the audio device disabled by default because some users were suffering from blank screens. These changes were then backported to the Radeon kernel driver for 6.2. Some searching revealed this as known issue, including Fedora bug 754825 and Ubuntu bug 897008. I'm reporting this here because I didn't see it mentioned in either the upstream 6.2 release notes or the CentOS 6.2 release notes. Finally, thanks to the CentOS team for another fine release. Jim

Heads up: corrupt ifup-eth script in initscripts package on 5.7

Hi, after a lot of head scratching I found that the ifup-eth script in the initscripts package seems to be corrupt. I filed a bug with the details here: http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=5333 Given the nature of the corruption you might be not affected at all, see strange error messages or end up with networking problems on Centos 5.7 depending on what you configuration looks like. I just thought I'd mention it here in case someone is in the same position as me and sees weird things happening when dealing with network configuration. I almost questioned my sanity before I went and dug into the networking scripts and found the problem. Regards, Dennis

C6 gateway/firewall problem

Hi, I'm using system-config-firewall (C6 x86_64, fully up to date) to configure a gateway/firewall box. 2 nics, eth0 (configured as bridge0, mtu 7200) connected to the lan, eth1 being connected directly to the internet (public ip, mtu 1500). ssh port is open and accessible. nat is working fine. I've put bridge0 as a trusted interface, eth1 is masqueraded. I've put ports 20,21,80 as forwarded ports on eth1 to lan machines. Thing is nmap (and classical ways to access these protocols) say it's closed. I've tried to make 20,21,80 open and forwarded, to no avail. Could someone give me a hand ? Thanks, Laurent.

multilib error on centos 6.2 x86_64

I just tried to update to CentOS 6.2, but I am faced with "Errors: Protected multilib versions" error, the offending packages are: jasper-libs.i686 krb5-libs.i686 nss.i686 After some investigation, it turns out that there are newer packages in "x86_64 updates" repository, but only for x86_64 version, while in "x86_64 main" repository there are older i686 version packages, causing version conflict. To solve these problem, I have to manually install the newer i686 packages in "i686 updates" repository. Is there anything wrong in the build system that lacked those i686 packages in"x86_64 updates" repository?

sendmail and sudo

This is annoying. I ssh to a server, then, it doesn't matter if I su - or sudo -s, I start a service (motion, if it matters), and when the service sends an email, it's from me, not from root, or the user the service runs as. I've dumped my environment, I've just dumped service's environment. I've set SUDO_USER to root, and SUDO_UID to 0, and restarted the service, and still no joy. My manager found this trick: echo "To: user help " | sendmail -t and the same thing happens. Anyone else run into this? No relevant google hits so far. mark

CentOS-6.1 KVM guest on CentOS-6.1 host. I am seeing this SEAlert in the /var/log/audit/audit.log file a new guest immediately after startup. Can someone tell me what it means and what I should do about it? A Google search reveals a number of Fedora issues with similar errors dating back a few years; most of which seem to have something to do with package ownership. Disable autoneg on r8169?

Two problems I hope to solve: 1. The switch being used has autoneg off and has port set to 100 full duplex. 2. Many times NIC fails to come up properly during PXE boot: r8169: eth0: link down ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready I can't use ethtool to disable autoneg because the nic driver is built into a bzImage. The root fs is currently being mounted via nfs during pxeboot at speed 10, half-duplex. In the past for sk98lin driver I could pass a kernel module parameter sk98lin.ConType=100FD on the kernel boot line. yum update fails on perl dependancy

I finally started yum upgrade for CentOS 6.0+CR x86_64. yum reports that I have already installed perl-5.10.1-119.el6_1.1, but perl-CGI requests for perl-5.10.1-119.el6 from ISO/base repo. Can someone advise on the best course of action? Upgrade frim 6.0 to 6.1 crashes on x3850

Hi, After yum update on a Cent OS 6.0 IBM x3850 server to Cent OS 6.1, the kernel crashes on boot. I have googlet a little, and find that others have the same problem and there seems not to be a solution yet. The kernel that crashes is 2.6.32-131.21.1.el6.x86_64. If i boot the prior kernel 2.6.32-71.29.1.el6.x86_64 instead it works! Is it advisable to run the server with kernel 2.6.32-71.29.1.el6.x86_64 on a Cent OS 6.1 system ? And what is the problem ? odd mdadm behavior

Allo esteemed Centos-ers, Noticed something funny with an mdadm mirror based raid the other day. So I had a system disk set to mirror via mdadm. One of the disks went south at a remote office and since there was no one available to swap out the disk, I thought to leave it for later. Well, due to work being what is it, this later became a year. During one of the servers many reboots, much of the data on the system went missing. The logs even showed a gap from the day the disk went bad to the day this reboot occurred. So picture a gap in the logs of about a year or so. I first suspected foul play but soon discovered that the previous bad disk in the mirror became functional again and that its data basically put the server back to the time period being a year ago or so. Not a big deal as I do 2 types of backups every day so recovery was fine. Has any one seen this before and what could I have done to prevent this? Thanks in advance, - aurf

forcing yum to download but not install

Hey folks, Is there any way to fake a "yum update" just to get yum to force a download of all the files it needs, without actually installing them. I finally have a RPM cache/proxy working and I just want to populate it. The server I want to actually update cannot be updated until tomorrow but I'd like to do a fake update just to force the RPMs into my cache so they will all be pre-downloaded. I have been requested to ensure the httpd on a server is version 2.2.21 or later. How do I verify that? On CentOS 5.7 x86_64 it says its version 2.2.3-53. is that equivalent to 2.2.21 in RedHat land with the way they do versions? Thanks. Jerry

Backup Redux

Hey folks, I just went through the archives to see what people are doing for backups, and here is what I found : - amanda - bacula - BackupPC - FreeNAS Here is my situation : we have pretty much all Sun hardware with a Sun StorageTek SL24 tape unit backing it all up. OSes are a combination of RHEL and CentOS. The software we are using is EMC NetWorker Management Console version 3.5.1.Build.269 based on NetWorker version 7.5.1.Build.269 The pickle we are in right now is that this software is Java based, and stops working at a very specific release of JRE (1.6.26 or something like that). We still have some machines around with that release and it looks like we need to keep at least 1 of them, but this is clearly not a long term viable solution. In the end I want to get our central IT group to take over our backups if possible (we are a bit of an island outside of central IT), but as I pursue that path I also want to pursue a 2ndary path assuming they will say "no". I am familiar with BackupPC and will look at the other recommendations above. I think that Bacula and Amanda are sort of the drop-in replacements for what we have now so I'll look at them most closely. But if I do have to carry forward with our own backups I'd ideally like to get out of the tape game - never liked tapes. Anyway, since the last big backup discussion was over a year ago I figured I'd kick off another one to see if anything new has come up in the mean time. In earlier versions 'mii-tool' would iterate over interfaces and show which have link up. In 6.x it wants an interface as a parameter. What is the appropriate way to find which of some number of of interfaces are connected? Random Proliant Crashes CentOS 6.1

I've been seeing some random Proliant DL380 G4 64bit crashes. Each time, on the console are messages relating tojbd2/cciss and something about a waitfor 120 seconds. Is anybody else seeing anything like this? Oddly, I can't seem to find this in the logs. Static routes with a metric?

Hi, How can I define static routes to be created at boot time with a specific metric? I have two NICs that ultimately end up at the same peer, but literally go through two completely different networks. IOW, each NIC connects to a different layer 3 device. Also, note that the machine actually has three total NICs: the third is the owner of the default route. The two mentioned above are for a specialized sub net. What I basically need to be able to do is this: route add -host h1 gw g1 metric 0 route add -host h1 gw g2 metric 10 Notice that everything is the same except the gateway and metric. I could put this in /etc/rc.local, but was wondering if there's a cleaner way to do it in e.g. the network-scripts directory. Thanks, Matt

how to find source of data loss / corruption

Hi, 2 websites, hosted on 2 different CentOS 5.7 servers (one being very new, about 3 weeks old) keeps loosing data - but it's more like it's corrupted than being deleted. For example, a photo would be uploaded last night and today when we checked it, it doesn't show on the website. So we check if the file is on the server, and exists but is 0KB in size. Last night it still worked fine. The photo is 482Kb in size. The first time this happened we thought it was due to a bug with CentOS 5.7 + EXT4 + quotas (there's a bug open for this) and since the server's console kept giving errors about possible data corruption we thought it would be best if we move everything to a more stable platform. So we brought a new server, setup CentOS 5.7 + ext3 + quotas (which has been working fine on all our servers for a long time) and moved the data across. A few days down the line and I still see this happening. I'm out of ideas and hope someone could shed some light on the matter. I've checked some suggested search results, but couldn't find any issues with the HDD according to SMART. The servers' both have 4GB RAM and 8Core CPU's.Neither RAM, nor CPU usage is high. Both are setup with RAID10 across 4 entrerprise HDD's, one server has software RAID and the new one hardware RAID. CentOS 5.7 gives me a blank screen after bootup

Hi all, I have an odd problem, for which I couldn't find any suggestions on google. A CentOS 5.7x64 gives me a blank screen on bootup, both to the 17" LCD monitor connected to the VGA port, and to the KVMOVIP device built-into the server, I can see the GRUB boot loader, and everything booting up, upto the point where it says "Waiting for driver initialization.", then it goes blank - both on the LCD and the KVM. Does anyone know how to fix this? It does the same whether I boot into the CentOS, or XEN kernel, or in single user mode. Hello there, w/ my CentOS6 (up-to-date), running GNOME, I'm struggling with HAL and mount options for my USB storage devices. According to what I'm reading from: http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/view/svn/general/hal.html My old policies in /etc/hal/fdi/policy/ are ignored (and this is true!). Apparently I should edit my custom mount options through gconf-editor (in /system/storage/default_options/vfat/mount_options) but whatever I set here or in /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor, I see definitely no effect to mount options. Roughly, I'm trying to force mount options like storage location, flush or not, sync or not, shortname=, etc.) to my vfat-formatted USB sticks. Any hint? Am I looking at wrong configurations? BTW, should I worry about uhelper=udisks, does it mean that hal is irrelevant for what I want? Regards, -- wwp

Monitoring services

What's available to remotely monitor services? What I'd like is something that can run scripts for each service to connect to a port and verify that it's up, and then send me an SMS message (phone text) to let me know which, if any, are down. Also, does a script exist that checks all the services listed by chkconfig and reports those that should be up but are down?

Network Situation

In my personal environment, I've got 7 machines running, with 4 of those machines running various flavors of Linux (CentOS 5 x86_64; Fedora 15 x86_64; Fedora 14 i686). Based upon some issues with the Fedora 15 x86_64 machine I'm considering dropping Fedora 15 in favor of CentOS 6.1. My questions are: On the networking side, has a there been a move to change the ethernet names from eth0 to em1? After install, can I change from NetworkManager to plain network? On my CentOS 5 machine I'm running VMware Server 2 and would like to move to KVM virtualization on the Fedora 15/CentOS 6.1 box. Is the level of KVM comparable between Fedora 15 and CentOS 6? If I install CentOS 6.0 and sometime later upgrade to CentOS 6.2, will the fact that I'm running software raid-1 on the /boot partition cause me grief? Will the fact that I'm running software raid-1 and LVM that was defined under Fedora 12 cause me grief? Are there any caveats moving from Fedora 15 to CentOS 6? Any advise? UUID for network cards

Hello, with CentOS 6, my new server created an UUID entry in ifcfg-eth0 - additional to HWADDR entry. Up to CentOS 5 the connection to the netwark card was defind only by HWADDR. Now I have a new network card. How can I get the correct UUID? The server connects correct the network with the updated HWADDR without any UUID. Why do I need an UUID? Thank you for help in advance.
