Hi all, I am looking at processes in centos 6. How do I stop gvfs-gphoto2-volume-monitor from starting. I tried searching in gconf-edit for it but did not find anything. I have ran these commands and rebooted. (I verified they are unchecked now also) gconftool-2 -t bool --list-type bool --set /apps/nautilus/preferences/media_automount false gconftool-2 -t bool --list-type bool --set /apps/nautilus/preferences/media_automount_open false but gvfs-gphoto2-volume-monitor is still running. I see that SquirrelMail is gone from 6. Is there a package in here somewhere that is a webmail system? Otherwise, I suppose it lives in one of the repos like sourceforge. I just wanted to check if something new existed before doing that. John

Hey, I solved my "The installation source given by device ['sdb2'] could not be found". Apparently ignoredisk is so strong it not only ignores the disks to be partitioned but also the disks holding the installation source... Now I ran into: In interactive step cleardiskssel, can't continue In anaconda.log I saw: step installtype does not exist step confirminstall does not exist step complete does not exist (14 times) Then it seem to do the step setuptime correctly. And then it goes into stepcleardiskssel and fails. Hi CentOS Team, i am not able to install CentOS 6.0 , while installing 1) Insert your CentOS 6.0 installation DVD into DVD drive 2) In the pre-boot phase of system startup <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Booting> press <F11> to enter UEFI Boot Manager 3) Enter 'UEFI Boot Settings' 4) Choose 'Add Boot Option' 5) Point to 'BOOTX64.efi' file, whose exact path is /EFI/EFI/BOOT/BOOTX64.efi on the DVD 6) Add Description (e.g. "CentOS 6.0") and optionally add Optional Data (which is passed to the boot image, not necessary) when i press the F11 i am not able go to boot options , for that i used the del and esc, there i am not able to find the UEFI settings, i tried with enabling the ide configuration to raid and enabling the sata0 and sata1 still i am not able to install CentOs . please guide me to install the centos

kvm module and boot order

I use kvm-amd a lot to do test installs. I am using it with qemu-kvm-0.14 the lastest. I think your supposed to be able to give your command line and add the parameter " -boot dc" so it initially boots with the cdrom (d) and then after reboot will boot do the HD or c. This never works for me. It always boots CDROM. Is anyone using this argument. Is there something special to do in order to get the first boot on CDrom then the next boot going to HD? Thanks, Jerry

All other variants of this construct, with and without escape characters, single and double quote combinations, that I can think of all give exactly the same error. If anyone really needs to do this, there is a patch in the gdm srpm called plymoth.patch that changes the parameters. It's located on line 225. If you change that to what you need and recompile it, it should work. Not that I recommend this... non PAE support

Does anyone know what I would have to modify in 6 if I wanted to run on an older Pentium M CPU without PAE? Is it just the kernel that needs to be rebuilt (maybe while installed in a system with a supported CPU)? Or are there other components that would cause problems and need to be rebuilt too? How to remove Microsoft soft raid?

Have a quad core workstation that was running WinXP_64 that I want to blow away and install CentOS 6. C6 install process finds raid metadata associated with sda and sdb, and then excludes them from the rest of the installation process. There doesn't appear to be an option for disassembling the raid as part of the install process. I think there should be. Any tricks to removing/by-passing the soft raid left over from the previous OS? Dave M

Hey, I am trying to upgrade my kickstart usb key to 6.0 and I ran into a few issues. I boot with: append initrd=initrd.img ks=hd:sdb2:/ks.cfg repo=hd:sdb2:/centos and in the ks.cfg I have: harddrive --partition=sdb2 --dir=/centos and on sdb2 I have: sdb2:/centos/CentOS-6.0-x86_64-bin-DVD1.iso sdb2:/centos/CentOS-6.0-x86_64-bin-DVD2.iso It fails from the beginning unless I add /images inside /centos, If I do: sdb2:/centos/CentOS-6.0-x86_64-bin-DVD1.iso sdb2:/centos/CentOS-6.0-x86_64-bin-DVD2.iso sdb2:/centos/images/install.img it goes all the way until after the pre script and then complain that sdb2:/centos does not contain the installation images... I suspect it does not give a damn about the two DVD isos and expect the unpacked content... But with CentOS 5, it used to work fine with the CD isos... Is it only CD isos allowed? Or not even CDs? Booting CentOS 6 in VirtualBox on Ubuntu

I trying to try out CentOS 6 in an Oracle VirtualBox running on Ubuntu. Has anyone been able to get this configuration working? When I try to boot the "Live" ISO it starts to do the countdown but when it reaches zero it gets stuck - nothing else happens. No error messages and since the install never really gets going, no logs. I've checked the mailing list archive back a few months, but I've not seen anything related. Cheers, Cliff

running X as root in centos 6

When I run X as root in centos 6 I get a nice little message that "your currently trying to run as root super user" and are you sure you want to with a checkbox. I do this for a reason as a post install step, then the system reboots and it never happens again... I am trying to find how to set this checkbox which says "never ask me again" and move on... I was trying to find it in gconf-editor but have not found it. Does anyone know where it is? THanks, Jerry

Hey guys, If I needed to get /dev/dsp back on centos 6, how would I go about doing that. Note, I've already uninstalled pulseaudio. I've also edited /etc/modprobe.d/dist-oss.conf and uncommented: /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-pcm && /sbin/modprobe snd-pcm-oss && /sbin/modprobe snd-seq-device && /sbin/modprobe snd-seq-oss But I'm getting: FATAL: Module snd_pcm_oss not found. HOWTO install CentOS 6 on low memory computer or virtual machine (even 192MB RAM)

I've managed to install CentOS 6 on a 192MB virtual machine using LiveCD install-to-disk graphical method. This is not normally possible because of: - hard-coded minimum supported memory in Anaconda installer - it will show a message "You do not have enough RAM to install CentOS Linux on this machine" if you try or force you to use seriously crippled text installer; - a bug in Anaconda installer, which prevents it from using swap during installation. I think it would be useful to be able to install CentOS 6 (or Scientific Linux 6 or RedHat Enterprise Linux - RHEL 6) on low memory old computer or laptop, as it can be very capable firewall, home www server, proxy etc. So the procedure is as follows: 1. Boot to 32-bit CentOS LiveCD (CentOS-6.0-i386-LiveCD.iso) in graphical mode (if you have at least 256MB RAM) or text mode (if you have less than 256MB RAM). 2. Login as root. 3. Edit a file /usr/sbin/anaconda - using vim in text mode or gedit in graphical mode - search for "within" and modify function "within_available_memory" adding a line "return True" like this: def within_available_memory(needed_ram): return True # kernel binary code estimate that is # not reported in MemTotal by /proc/meminfo epsilon = 15360 # 15 MB return needed_ram < (iutil.memInstalled() + epsilon) This would get rid of artificial hard-coded memory requirement. 4. Edit a file /usr/lib/anaconda/storage/__init__.py - search for 4th occurrence of "swapoff" and modify a fragment of function "umountFilesystems" from: for device in devices: if not device.format.mountable and \ (device.format.type != "swap" or swapoff): continue to: for device in devices: if not (device.format.mountable and \ (device.format.type != "swap" or swapoff)): continue (add parentheses - left one after "if not" and right one after "or swapoff"). This would fix a bug in installer. 5. Run "liveinst" which should start graphical installer. 6. During installation create swap partition so that you have at least 1GB of available memory (RAM+swap) (default setup should suffice, but I personally do not recommend it as it used LVM, which AFAIK prevents disks from using barriers). really large file systems with centos

I've been asked for ideas on building a rather large archival storage system for inhouse use, on the order of 100-400TB. Probably using CentOS 6. The existing system this would replace is using Solaris 10 and ZFS, but I want to explore using Linux instead. We have our own tomcat based archiving software that would run on this storage server, along with NFS client and server. Its a write once, read almost never kind of application, storing compressed batches of archive files for a year or two. 400TB written over 2 years translates to about 200TB/year or about 7MB/second average write speed. The very rare and occasional read accesses are done by batches where a client makes a webservice call to get a specific set of files, then they are pushed as a batch to staging storage where the user can then browse them, this can take minutes without any problems. My general idea is a 2U server with 1-4 SAS cards connected to strings of about 48 SATA disks (4 x 12 or 3 x 16), all configured as JBOD, so there would potentially be 48 or 96 or 192 drives on this one server. I'm thinking they should be laid as as 4 or 8 or 16 seperate RAID6 sets of 10 disks each, then use LVM to put those into a larger volume. About 10% of the disks would be reserved as global hot spares. So, my questions... A) Can CentOS 6 handle that many JBOD disks in one system? is my upper size too big and I should plan for 2 or more servers? What happens with the device names when you've gone past /dev/sdz ? B) What is the status of large file system support in CentOS 6? I know XFS is frequently mentioned with such systems, but I/we have zero experience with it, its never been natively supported in EL up to 5, anyways. C) Is GFS suitable for this, or is it strictly for clustered storage systems? D) anything important I've neglected? -- john r pierce N 37, W 122 santa cruz ca mid-left coast

I finally was able to create a VM in which to load and "play" with CentOS 6, and the first time I went to update the kernel I ran into this: Downloading Packages: kernel-2.6.32-71.29.1.el6.x86_64.rpm | 22 MB 01:11 Running rpm_check_debug Running Transaction Test Transaction Test Succeeded Running Transaction Installing : kernel-2.6.32-71.29.1.el6.x86_64 1/1 grubby fatal error: unable to find a suitable template What does that mean and how do I fix it?

Gimp PDF plugin - Centos 5

Gimp on Centos 5 has somehow lost its ability to load a pdf file on three (i386) different computers. I'm pretty sure that this used to work. When I try to load a PDF file I get the initial box titled "Load Postscript" with rendering and antialiasing options, but when I hit OK I get an error message: Opening "filename" failed: Plug-In could not open image." Comparing between Centos 5 and Centos 6 I see that I have a file named file-pdf in the gimp plugins directory on Centos 6 x86_64 (/usr/lib64/gimp/2.0/plug-ins) but that file is not preset on the Centos 5 boxes.. -- MELVILLE THEATRE ~ Real D 3D Digital Cinema ~ www.melvilletheatre.com www.creekfm.com - FIFTY THOUSAND WATTS of POW WOW POWER!

Question about CentOS 6 installation setup

When I created a CentOS VM (using VMWare WorkStation), I installed with the first DVD, and the disk partitioning and installation was all done automatically with almost no input required from me. The problem with this is that the /boot partition was too small (under 50MB) and I couldn't update the kernel (it blew out with a grubby error, which I did not recognize - separate thread on that). Is this a manifestation of using VMWare for the VM platform, or is this "normal" for a 6.0 installation or what? Thanks in advance.

RADIUS Questions

I've been running FreeRadius 2 on Centos 5.5 for a while now. So far so good. I'm now looking to make connecting to our WPA secured wireless easier. The RADIUS server is running in a VM and since the system is in use I have copied the original and used that copy to create a test environment. I have run through all system updates and have upgraded all relevant packages. The test system is at 5.6 now. Currently with Windows machines I can't just connect to the SSID and enter in a username and password. I have to go and manually add the SSID, modify some settings; specifically turning off validating server certificate, turning off automatically use my Windows login, and turning on User or computer authentication mode. We also have some OS X clients. Fortunately connecting via OS X is easier. The catch is that I have to join the machine to our domain. After that it's pretty much username and password, and they are on. Ideally I would like to have a simple "connect to this SSID, enter your username and password and that's it" solution and still have all requests checked against our Active Directory server. On a side note. I'm going through my settings trying to get this working more smoothly and I ran across: wbinfo --a user%password (yes I'm adding in my username and pass) plaintext password authentication succeeded challenge/response password authentication failed error code was NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED (0xc0000022) error messsage was: winbind client not authorized to use winbindd_pam_auth_crap. Ensure permissions on /var/cache/samba/winbindd_privileged are set correctly. Could not authenticate user MYUSERNAME with challenge/response I know the 2 error lines are permissions related. I'm not sure what the permissions should be on this file/folder. Can someone let me know this? The tutorial from FreeRadius says that I should get output similar to: plaintext password authentication failed error code was NT_STATUS_NO_SUCH_USER (0xc0000064) error message was: No such user Could not authenticate user CHSchwartz%mypassword with plaintext password Yet ntlm_auth --request-nt-key --domain=MYDOMAIN --username=MYUSERNAME NT_STATUS_OK: Success (0x0) So the Auth is working. I don't understand though why my AD server is letting cleartext passwords through. It shouldn't right? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Dan <http://www.liai.org> <http://www.liai.org>

Upgrading from CentOS 5.6 to 6.0

Help! Just ran the installation DVD but there is no option to 'upgrade'. Looked at the RHEL docs, http://docs.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/6/html/Installati on_Guide/ch-guimode-x86.html#id4594292 referenced off the CentOS Release notes but the CentOS installation doesn't offer the 'upgrade'. I use to be able to upgrade by doing a 'yum update'. That doesn't work either. Guess I'm stuck with 5.6 as I an not about to install a new version and have to rebuild all non-rpm packages from scratch. This is worse than Microsoft!!

Under centos 5 I modified /etc/gdm/custom.conf to auto login with the following: [daemon] AutomaticLoginEnable=true AutomaticLogin=myuser TimedLoginEnable=true TimedLogin=myuser TimedLoginDelay=0 This doesnt seem to work in Centos 6. What is the new way to accomplish auto login under X11. Thanks, Jerry

tabs in emacs fundamental mode?

I'm noticing that under CentOS 6, emacs fundamental mode is no longer inserting tabs at factor-of-8 tabstops, but rather is doing some funky guess-the-intended-tab-distance thing like text mode has done for a while, currently using three spaces per tab key. Has anyone tracked down where this was changed and, more to the point, how to get the old CentOS 5 behavior back? FWIW, I'm invoking it as "emacs -nw filename". LANG is "C". nfsv4 and kerberos - fails to mount

I have been trying all sorts of things to get this working. nfsv4 works fine if I just use the nfs-v3 form of export i.e. /nfs4exports 192.168.230.237/24(ro,fsid=0,sync,insecure,no_root_squash,no_subtree_check,squash_uids=0-99) /nfs4exports/NDG 192.168.230.237/24(rw,insecure,no_subtree_check,nohide,sync,no_root_squash,squash_uids=0-99) but this is inherently open to all on this machine. so then using this recipe http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/opensource/kerberos-authentication-with-nf… and many others that hours of google foo shows change exports to /nfs4exports gss/krb5(ro,fsid=0,sync,insecure,no_root_squash,no_subtree_check,squash_uids=0-99) /nfs4exports/NDG gss/krb5(rw,insecure,no_subtree_check,nohide,sync,no_root_squash,squash_uids=0-99) now from the client I can see [rkampen@timsws ~]$ showmount -e example.com Export list for example.com: /nfs4exports gss/krb5 /nfs4exports/NDG gss/krb5 but [rkampen@timsws /]$ sudo mount -t nfs4 -o sec=krb5 ndgonline.net:/ /NDG/ mount.nfs4: access denied by server while mounting ndgonline.net:/ and [rkampen@timsws /]$ sudo mount -t nfs4 -o sec=krb5 ndgonline.net:/NDG /NDG/ mount.nfs4: access denied by server while mounting ndgonline.net:/NDG And I cannot find any log entries relating to the kerberos KDC or on the nfs server - two different machines. I have set up all the principals in the KDC and used kadmin/ktadd to load into the client and the server /etc/krb5.keytab as per the above url. How and where do I get logging to occur so I can find out the missing piece in my kerberos setup? Any help or directions appreciated. TIA

Updated Kernel sensors modules

Last week I upgraded my box to CentOS 6 and I'm very impressed so far with it. The only small issue so far is that it doesn't seem to recognize the new Sandy Bridge Core i5 CPU that I have and you can't monitor its temperature. I recompiled the latest coretemp module from the latest 2.6.39 kernel and the latest lm_sensors version however this still wasn't enough as the new module loads fine but still reports that there were no sensors found. I booted a Fedora 15 install and it recognized the CPUs and started reporting the temperatures so obviously the modules are there but maybe the coretemp is not the only thing that is needed. Does anyone know what else is needed for the sensors to be recognized? Thanks, Deyan

lots of small files in a folder on Linux centos

Hello, I have a rather annoying issue on going with one of my centos virtual servers. the server hosts a website using apache and mysql ,there are three persons involved with keeping the site up and running. and i am his root due to the fact he does not know anything with about Linux. there is an php/sql coder , and the site owner which only knows to use the CMS and upload new articles to the website. the coder and the site owner work together for a long time already , i am their new admin ( as the last one was a major ISP which failed to host the site properly ). lately the server is under-preforming and load averages are high, mysql service keeps crashing and the server is hitting max memory usage ( so i added ram .. ) , after looking into the website folders, i have found one folder which from my point of view is one of the causes for the server loads. (sorry for piping ls ). uploads]# ls | wc -l 3123 I have talked with the site owner, which in turn showed this to the coder ,now he throws the ball back claiming: it has nothing to do with server performance. the folder is full of images, about 40K each, and i have good reason to believe this is the problem, as this is not the first time i see that a folder which includes a large amount of files causes a server to under-perform. the coder is not tech savvy as one might expect, so it's really hard for me to explain the issue of having lots of files in one folder to the site owner or to the coder. the hardware is a decent machine dual E5530 24RAM with six hard drives in raid. the virtual server has 2GB of ram and it's own CPU share ( 4 cores 8 threads ). the coder is arguing with facts sadly to say he has the site owner on "his side". long story short, how should i explain in the most simple way in plain english that having that much files in a folder will cause a server to work slower? pros vs cons of having a large amount of small files in the same folder on Linux Centos? -- Best Regards, Yonatan Pingle RHCT | RHCSA | CCNA1

Hey guys, If I needed to get /dev/dsp back on centos 6, how would I go about doing that. Note, I've already uninstalled pulseaudio. I've also edited /etc/modprobe.d/dist-oss.conf and uncommented: /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-pcm && /sbin/modprobe snd-pcm-oss && /sbin/modprobe snd-seq-device && /sbin/modprobe snd-seq-oss But I'm getting: FATAL: Module snd_pcm_oss not found. Suggestions?

centos 6 and mingetty for /dev/ttyS1

I've been playing with centos 6. Sometimes it gets into a mode when it "seems" like it hangs at boot. At reboot I hit ALT-D for details and the last thing printed is Starting atd. No I can press alt-f2 to get a login. Doing ps ax does not show a mingetty tty1, What might be going on here. What isn't completing to get a full boot. Thanks, Jerry

Hi List, I use a kickstart file to install my operating systems. In the kickstart file, I put the clearpart options to erase all my partition. But the install failed because the partition aren't erased. Does someone have the same issue ? Regards Kevin C

VLAN's

Hi, I have a firewall running IPTABLES. I have tried to route sip traffic from my WAN(eth3) interface to a VLAN(eth2.2) interface, however the data will not route to the VLAN it keeps routing to the default interface(eth2). Does anyone have an idea as to what I need to look for? pxe booting questions

hello, I have a situation where I am using PXE and kickstart to install my machines. My set up is as follows: i have a cobbler server which is also an mrepo mirror doing the booting. my mrepo tree has both disc1 and disc2 loop mounted, and RPMS.os symlinks both the discs contens to generate the unified os tree. This all works fine. My issue is with the kickstart, if i use the disc1 as the url (like below) when it tries to install a package that is on disc2, it still looks for it in the disc1 location. Below is a snippet of my kickstart file (which works great if i do not select any packages that reside on the disc2 of the centos install (All discs have been verified as working via sha an md5 checksums). url --url=http://mrepo/mrepo/centos6-x86_64/disc1 repo --name=os --baseurl=http://mrepo/mrepo/centos6-x86_64/RPMS.os selinux --permissive install lang en_US.UTF-8 keyboard us skipx rootpw firewall --disabled authconfig --enableshadow --enablemd5 %packages redhat-lsb rubygems puppet %end Thanks. On my new Dell system, it's got a cardreader. More to the point, it's got an idiot menu key... *right* next to the right control key, and just where the annoying keyboard design has it cut down from the oversize space bar ASCII art <ctrl><WinDoze> <tall[ ]<tall<tall<tall <ctrl> Alt>[ tall spacebar ] alt> Win> menu> The result is that just trying to type, I regularly hit the thing. Does anyone have an idea how to disable this forever (if y'all don't, I'm prying the key *off*). Thanks in advance. mark

centos6 not using /etc/gdm/custom.conf

In CentOS5 you were able to create a server section in /etc/gdm/custom.conf such as [server-Standard] name=Standard server command=/usr/bin/Xorg -br -audit 4 -s 15 chooser=false handled=true flexible=true priority=0 After this change, Xorg would run with the -br -audit 4 -s 15 options. Unfortunately in CentOS6 this is not the case. It completely ignores anything put into custom.conf as far as I can tell. It appears to run with -nr -verbose -auth -nolisten tcp by default. CentOS 6 PXE boot:Unable to download the kickstart file

We have CentOS 6 manual installation working by PXE booting from a RHEL5.6 PXE/TFTP server. However, when we add a Kickstart file in the PXE configuration: kernel CentOS-6-i386/vmlinuz append load_ramdisk=1 initrd=CentOS-6-i386/initrd.img network ks=nfs:130.226.86.4:/u/rpm/kickstart/ks-centos-6-clean-i386.cfg then the CentOS 6 client install reports "Unable to download the kickstart file". The console 3 reports "failed to mount nfs source". We believe the NFS server is OK because we can install CentOS5 clients in this way. Perhaps this problem is related to this RHEL6 bug? https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=653655 However, on the centos list I see some people who apparently go Kickstart to work with CentOS 6 - but how did they do it? hello, after a Centos 6 fresh install, I don't see any run-parts scripts in /etc/contab like in the 5.x releases : # run-parts 01 * * * * root run-parts /etc/cron.hourly 02 4 * * * root run-parts /etc/cron.daily 22 4 * * 0 root run-parts /etc/cron.weekly 42 4 1 * * root run-parts /etc/cron.monthly was it moved somewhere else ? am I missing any package ? thanks, Tom

VLC package(s) for C6 ?

Hi listees! Just installed C6 (more or less) permanently on my eeepc. I've enabled rpmfusion non-free, rpmfusion free, elrepo, and epel, prior to this point I've been running fedora on it (f10 thru f14) and have always found VLC at rpmfusion. (but finally RHEL/Centos have become modern enough to support the eeepc's funky hardware, so I'm switching back--tired of the version churn of Fedora.) but RpmFusion does not seem to have packaged VLC for EL6, nor have epel or elrepo, Anyone know where to find such packages? thanks! Why are all repos < 5.6 listed?

Greetings all. I just enabled all repos on my system, to enable me to find a particular package. This is the first time I have noticed all the Centos repos < 5.6 being listed. Is this a new feature, to include all repos pre 5.6 now? nouveau driver one centos 6

I "wish" to not load the or even install the nouveau driver by default. I want to use the NVIDIA binary driver. I have tried a number of things: 1) in my kickstart package section add the line: -xorg-x11-drv-nouveau This did not work - it was still installed. 2) use the nvidia installer and it asks to create a modprobe.conf file to blacklist the driver. I said yes thats what I want. I verified the file being present and rebooted. The driver is still loaded "lsmod | grep nou" still showed it present. 3) I tried "rpm -e xorg-x11-drv-nouveau --nodeps". This seeming worked however the files for nouveau were still present. find / | grep nouveau showed driver files and more.... So - anyone know how to get this off of my machine??? I thought the "-" in the kickstart package section would work, but no. Thanks so much for any thoughts. jerry

CentOS 6.0 chkconfig strange behavior

Hi, I'm noticing some strangeness with chkconfig on CentOS 6.0 and was looking for a bit of advice. It appears that chkconfig is re sequencing or re ordering the start priority of various services when turning on a service using chkconfig. Example is the network service. Under normal circumstances network is set to start at S10. However when I add something like snmpd and invoke chkconfig snmpd on it will change network to S81. Which fouls up some of my other services that look for config files on NFS shares. Testing this issue with the snmpd service I removed $network from Required-Start which did nothing. The only solution I've found is to remove the entire BEGIN INIT INFO to END INIT INFO section. Once that is removed it no longer changes the network startup priority when enabling the snmpd service. Seems to me that you'd want network started before snmpd. So why chkconfig wants to re arrange it to start after snmpd which defaults to S50 is beyond me. So why would it do that? Did I miss some documentation or something? :-) Thanks in advance for any assistance! --Jerry

ext4 in CentOS 5.6?

I'm sure many are running ext4 FS's in production, but just want to be re-assured that there are not currently any major issues before starting a new project that looks like it will be using ext4. I've previously been using xfs but the software for this project requires ext3/ext4. I'm always very cautious before jumping onto a new FS, (new in the sense it is officially supported now) Thanks in advance!

Hi, Jerry Try appending 'rdblacklist=nouveau' to the kernel line in grub.conf (and keep the blackist in modules.conf) - install CentOS and reboot as usual - preempt booting at the grub menu and append 'rdblacklist=nouveau 3' to the kernel line to disable nouveau and start up in init 3 - install the Nvidia binary driver. Access denied false positive

Hi there -- One of our servers is running the 5.3 32-bit release. When a user logs into the system via an SSH terminal connection, he first sees an "Access denied" message, and then gets a password prompt. He is able to enter the password, and log into the system without issue. It appears the error message is a false positive. A check of the messages and secure log files did not show anything apparent. What would cause this message to occur? The information in this e-mail is intended only for the person to whom it is addressed. problem starting X11 on centos 6

Hi All, I had an issue. Manually installing Centos 6 everything worked X11 came up with nvidia binary drivers. Cool. However, I am working on a kickstart install for Centos 6 and that was not working. When I started X it would hang. no mouse no keyboard. however , remote ssh was available and worked. Thinking I had some serious bug in nvidia binary was my thought - but I kept looking. I saw this error: (EE) config/hal: couldn't initialise context: unknown error (null) in the X log file. I continued to look and sure enough hald was installed but not running. I did service haldaemon stop and it said FAILED as expected, then service haldaemon start and it started up. Curious.... chkconfig --list | grep hal reports haldaemon 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off So thats the reason of course, it was not set to start. Question is why???? certainly I can put in my kickstart post script to change chkconfig but why is it not set to start???? Thanks for any insite. Jerry

Experience with Centos running off usb-stick(s)

Hi, I'm trying to build a redundant duo of firewalls/routers/gateways and I'm thinking about not putting any disks in them and instead using a usb-stick raid-1 as storage. Has anyone any experience with this? Since the machines will be running pretty much only iptables, conntrackd and keepalived there is not going to be a lot of disk activity going on and the plan is to do all the logging on a remote machine which should reduce the write activity on the sticks to almost zero during normal operation. I've already created a fairly minimal kickstart for such an installation but I'm wondering if there are any opinions out there on whether this is a feasible approach or if there are any gotchas I'm not aware of. Using shell variables inside the ftp client

I have a script that opens an ftp connection to a non-*nix system. I desire to change directories on the host system using a shell variable to set the cd directory. However, I cannot seem to discover how this is done. I have tried this: TARGET=ftp-pickup ftp . . . cd $TARGET This gives the following error: 550 Failed to change directory. I am using shell variables (put $TEMP_TXFR_FILE $OUTPUT_FILE) elsewhere in this ftp session as arguments to get and put statements and I have no problems. Is there some reason why I cannot use shell variables as arguments to the cd command? I am aware the $ is used to invoke .netrc macros but I have none defined. In fact I was somewhat surprised, albeit pleasantly, when the ftp client accepted shell variables as arguments in the get and put statements. I am trying to install DFM 4.0.2, and have tried on both CentOS 4.8 i386 and CentOS 5.5 x86_64. Responder 3: Look at <solution3>. Responder 4: It doesn't work for me / I don't like that / it's a stupid solution / etc <conversation degenerates and/or flamewar ensues> There's nothing wrong with comparing / contrasting different solutions, but can we please try to remember that every circumstance is different and that just because someone suggests a solution it doesn't mean that it's the best for everyone? Ultimately, only the OP will be able to figure out what works best for him but having alternatives can help him get there. IMNSHO we, as professionals, should have lots of tools in our toolboxes, understand their pros and cons, not only in isolation but as they would apply in the different environments in which we find ourselves. If you have observations about a solution based on experience by all means share them (but please qualify the circumstances in which they apply). If you don't, file the solution away in your meatware for future reference. But if you hear about a solution and it doesn't seem like a good fit for your particular circumstances, and you're not the OP, can we please stop hearing the "but it doesn't work for *me* in these slightly different circumstances" comments? MySQL ERROR - UNKNOWN_MYSQL_USER

This is strange behavior because as soon as I start mysqld with a clean error log, I get the following messages: 110720 21:38:47 [Note] /usr/libexec/mysqld: ready for connections. I shutdown a mysql CLI monitor I had running, and did the restart again. So I'm just wondering why I get this message, when AFAIK there is nothing that should be trying to connect to mysql - unless it's a server daemon running somewhere? Has anyone else come across this funny error message? Bug in 6.0 i386 Basic server install...

Hey, I tested centOS in vmware player (512MB, 1 IDE disk) and bumped into a post install failure to boot. While the minimal install works all the way, the Basic server one fails at the first post-install boot with following: modprobe: FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.32-71.el6.i686/modules.dep: No such file or directory ... No root device found ... Boot has failed, sleeping forever I used the same partioning scheme as the minimal that is working fine... /boot ext4 sda1 swap on sda2 / on sda3 Tried with a SCSI disk image, and Basic server works fine... 2 questions on CentOS firewall

I'm running CentOS-6 on an HP MicroServer with a Billion 5200S modem/router connecting to the internet. I'm running the standard CentOS-6 firewall on the server. (1) I can open port 22 on the Billion, allowing me to ssh in from outside. But for some reason I cannot ping the same address from outside. (I can ping it internally.) Why is this? I'm not sure if the problem lies with the router or the server? There does not seem to be any explicit rule on either to allow ICMP packets through. (2) I have a Linksys WRT54GL WiFi router attached to the server, to allow access to the internet from laptops. This works fine. But I was surprised to find that when I turn OFF the firewall on the server this stops access to the internet on laptops. (I didn't test to see if re-booting the laptop would solve this.) Changing the size of the swap memory

When I first installed my CentOS system the machine had only 1 GB. the swap memory was set to 2 GB Now the machine has 4 GB but swap is still 2 GB. Thanks for the replies. I checked free and that makes sense to me now. The only thing I cannot figure out is, if there is all this memory available why would swap space start building? I started checking all this out because the system slowed to a crawl after I noticed swap space being used which does not make sense to me if there is available memory. total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 8301448 7917100 384348 0 59984 6009248 -/+ buffers/cache: 1847868 6453580 Swap: 4128760 1225896 2902864 btw - this is Centos 5.6 box using the PAE kernel. 2.6.18-238.12.1.el5PAE

Memory Usage in Top and System Monitor

Can someone help clear up some confusion in reading memory usage in Top and System monitor. Here is a picture of both. http://s1176.photobucket.com/albums/x327/ionosphere2011/ Why does "System Monitor" show 1.7gb free out of 8gb. While Top shows all 8gb being used? If 1.7gb is free then it should not be using swap space so I assume "System Monitor" is reporting it incorrectly? Thanks -- Mike

Script to sync with repo

under 5.6 I have a script that runs every night to rsync the repodata for local installations. I added the 6.0 to do the same. Something seems wrong now for 6.0. I do the same thing and I get errors from my local repo at install time. Seems like the cyrus-sasl package is never happy and aborts the installation. Is something wrong with the script below? It seems like it successfully copies the files. I ran it manually and did not see any errors. Any thoughts? CentOS 6 - VM network bridge issue

I built a CentOS 6 machine to host several CentOS 6 guest servers. As all guests will be Internet facing I set up the host with two bridged NICs and assigned an Internet facing IP address to br0 and a local IP address to br1. Each guest was installed using br0 and br1 with virtio drivers. On each I assigned an Internet facing IP address to eth0 and a local IP address on eth1. So far so good. I can access the guest servers from either IP address as expected. That is HTTP, SSH and SMTP servers on them are accessible and do what they are supposed to do. Except... Except from any location outside of my Comcast Cable Modem. To be clear, from any machine inside the modem to any address on the guests, all works perfectly. But outside the modem the guest apps either don't receive packets or for some reason don't respond, and I've tired it from four different locations. Using Wireshark on the guests I can see the packets arrive from the outside sources, but no response is seen. On accesses from inside I can see both incoming and outgoing packets, as expected. I can ping the outside sources from the guests, yet pings from the outside sources get no response from the guests. All the outside sources get responses when pinging the host. I can ping the guests from any inside machine. I've tried it with and without firewalls, both on the guests and the host. Including with the following iptables rule: iptables -A FORWARD -m physdev --physdev-is-bridged -j ACCEPT and the following sysctl adjustments: net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-ip6tables = 0 net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-iptables = 0 net.bridge.bridge-nf-call-arptables = 0 Both of the guest servers I've built have have same issue. Any ideas? I am at loss as to how to proceed and am about to reconsider the idea of multiple guests as servers. All packages are from the CentOS repo and I am using kvm-qemu via libvirtd and virt-manager. Emmett

[OT] Apache oddity - appending garbage request does not result in a 404

HI, I know this is OT and I apologize in advance, but with the wealth of knowledge on this list I hope that some kind soul will help (off list is fine). I run CentOS 5.6 with the usual LAMP stack. One of the virtual sites on this server failed a PCI Compliance (credit card security stuff) because, of all things, a URL with a non-existent request after the .php doesn't return a 404 and I can't figure out why. Example: http://www.domain.com/pagedoesnotexist returns the expected 404 But browse to a page that does exist, like goodpage.php, then append either a slash and some random string, or a ?=somerandomstring and the goodpage.php is still displayed. I'll gladly provide more info, if needed. Any pointers on where to look would be truly appreciated. Thanks in advance, and my apologies for the noise. -Ray

svn check out failed for 'connection refused' reason

Will QA web site have CentOS 6.1 status?

The QA web site at http://qaweb.dev.centos.org/qa/blog was really helpful for those of us who were curious as to how CentOS 6.0 was coming along. However, there doesn't seem to be much information as to how CentOS 6.1 is going from either the QA web site, the forums (Announcements), or Kananbir's twitter feed -- but it may be I'm just not looking in the right place. Does the QA site only get updated once 6.1 is passed along to the QA members? Wondering if 6.1 RPMs are mostly built and perhaps developers are wrestling with the same kinds of anaconda issues that they faced with 5.6... thanks, Greg

I finally switched workstations, and am running into a lot of truly annoying details with CentOS 6, and the software with it. For one, I'm doing this by webmail, and this version of Firefox *insists* on putting what I'm typing in gray, rather than black. For another, I despise the new version of thunderbird, since it now shows the full subject, if I have what they used to call the preview pane... and then take six more lines to do it, which I can't make go away.[1] rxvt, which is my preferred terminal, comes up with about 6 pt type, and I'm trying to find out how to change that, as well as bringing up all seven of my sessions in a directory under my home, instead of home.... *sigh* Hopefully, 6.1 will fix at least *some* things... mark, who doesn't want something that looks like M$.... 1. All mailreaders used to show this information at the top of the email, and hide or unhide the rest of the headers... but no matter what, if I scrolled down, they went off the top of the screen, not stayed there occupying space.
