Merging Install DVDs on a PXE server

Hi all, Probably a simple question, but, I'd like to merge both install DVDs into one directory on my PXE server. Obviously I will need to copy all of the files, but do I need to cast a magical incantation to recreate .discinfo, .treeinfo, etc? Usb surf stick for internet

Hello, I am searching for an internet usb surf-stick (umts) that works under CentOS. Is anyone using such a stick and if so, which chip has this usb-stick? Would a Huawei E160E chip work under CentOS? Or maybe under CentOS with the 2.6.35 kernel from elrepo? Thank you very much! regards Olaf

Just new to Centos 5.6. I'm trying to install an Xvnc server Downloaded tightvnc-1.3.10_unixsrc.bz2 I made thru configure but when I make I get these messages make[3]: Leaving directory `/home/michel/importe/tightvnc-1.3.10_unixsrc/vnc_unixsrc/Xvnc/programs/Xserver/hw/vnc' make[2]: *** No rule to make target `../.././/../libvncauth/libvncauth.a', needed by `Xvnc'. new kernel = no working sound

After updating my laptop ( compaq 6820s) to Centos 5.6 the sound is gone. The sound card is still detected but there is no sound from speaker Vendor: Intel Corporation Model: 82810H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller Module: snd-hda-intel On the same updated laptop the sound is working fine with an older kernel ( 2.6.18-194.32.1.el5.centos.plus ) I tried with no success ( sound related ) booting all of the following: kernel#2.6.18-238.el5 kernel#2.6.18-238.el5.centos.plus kernel#2.6.18-238.1.1.el5 kernel#2.6.18-238.1.1.el5.centos.plus kernel#2.6.18-238.5.1.el5 kernel#2.6.18-238.5.1.el5.centos.plus This is a nonworking scsconfig.log: http://pastebin.com/XW9e72Jj The sound is working fine with the following kernels: kernel#2.6.18-194.26.1.el5.centos.plus kernel#2.6.18-194.32.1.el5.centos.plus and all the older This is a working scsconfig.log: http://pastebin.com/xqdMra5q Centos was installed on this laptop in 2007 and everything worked ok till now. Centos 5.6 and httpd

A problem with httpd on 5.6 I have three Centos machines that were automatically upgraded from 5.5. to 5.6. Everything appears to be running perfect except httpd had stopped delivering web service on all three machines. I did a cursive look to see if there had been a reported bug and found : http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=4796 When I changed : chown root.apache /etc/httpd/alias/*.db chmod 0640 /etc/httpd/alias/*.db The problem was fixed on all three machines. Yes, I know that the modified repo files do not get overwritten but that does not help for new machines nor does it help when I change my local configuration. When I rebuild the centos-release rpm I actually modify it so that a new version of the rpm overwrites any existing .repo files. That way I know all of the machines under my control are only pulling updates I have approved and placed into my local repos. It would be nice if this srpm was released with the main distro. Rebuilding other packages can come later when all of the srpms are available but this particular package is important for me being able to update the machines. In fact I usually end up hacking up the first cut of the centos-release rpm for a new release based on the previous version (in this case 5.5) so that I can do my upgrades. iscsi-initiator-utils required in 5.6, loads uneeded modules

I just updated one of my virtual hosts to 5.6 and on rebooted I spotted an error about iscsi. Which surprised me, since I don't use iscsi. Yet there it is... % rpm -qf /etc/init.d/iscsi iscsi-initiator-utils-6.2.0.872-6.el5 And they're configured to start iscsi 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off iscsid 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off And I can't remove it % rpm -e iscsi-initiator-utils error: Failed dependencies: iscsi-initiator-utils is needed by (installed) mkinitrd-5.1.19.6-68.el5.i386 A physical machine still on 5.5 doesn't have iscsi % rpm -qa '*iscsi*' % ls /etc/init.d/*iscsi* /bin/ls: /etc/init.d/*iscsi*: No such file or directory It appears that yum did, indeed, install this: % grep iscsi /var/log/yum.log Apr 10 09:24:30 Installed: iscsi-initiator-utils-6.2.0.872-6.el5.i386 The "fix" is to chkconfig off the iscsi and iscsid rc scripts. This is a good idea, 'cos these scripts modprobe unnecessary modules. -- rgds Stephen

Afternoon, I've got an old Dell PERC 4DC (PCI 64bit/33MHz) sitting in my home rig and with a new board on the way that has PCI-X (133) and PCIe (x4) slots, I was wondering what people would recommend for a cheap hardware parallel SCSI RAID controller (no fake raid please) that is relatively cheap but faster then the old PERC? Dear List, I've taken a look at the TODO page http://wiki.centos.org/ToDo and I've picked something at random to ask a question about and see if we can get it done! "Add page for Hosting control panels - we seem to get a lot of people asking about them" I spotted this quote - What exactly does this mean? Does it mean that people want instructions on how to install some sort of web based admin panel? Or that they want one to be part of the distro as standard? RHEL doesn't have one (AFAIK) - so, I'm a bit lost as to what this means. Either way, our TODO page is too long, and I'm determined to blank it out. My aim, is to get some traction on this, so we can remove it from the ToDo page. So, I guess we can start with a clear definition of the requirement, and then move on from there. Discuss :)

virDomainSetMaxMemory error

CentOS 5.6, x86_64 In Virt-Manager, when attempting to either change a guest's memory allocation or even just clicking "Apply" on the memory tab and not actually changing the values, the following error pops up: "Error changing memory values: this function is not supported by the connection driver: virDomainSetMaxMemory" When Googling around, I am finding reports of this error as early as two days ago, and as late as a year ago. Is there an option in KVM/Virt-Manager I am missing in order to resolve this problem, or is this bug really over a year old and not fixed in CentOS 5.6?

According to <http://wiki.centos.org/Manuals/ReleaseNotes/CentOSLiveCD5.5> "There is a "Network Install" option on the Live CD that is the same as our CentOS-5.5-i386-netinstall ISO". I've looked quite carefully at my CentOS-5.5 Live CD (on a USB stick), and I don't see a Network Install option anywhere. Due to recent list traffic, it seems that we need to have a new todo list! I propose the following 1) Nuke current todo page 2) Create new todo page 3) Clear out ancient todo items a) Get rid of the items that are no longer relevant b) Reword those that are 4) Update Wiki a) Gasp as the magnitude at the job b) Inject coffee, add ego - write mini todo and propose to list c) Expand on b) till the list stops quibbling d) Find volunteers, and get cracking on Updating the wiki Any ideas? how is "binary compatibility" determined?

Hi all! We've seen quite a few references on the list to "100% binary compatibility with upstream". What I am curious about is, how precisely is this determined? All the ways I can think of for comparing how two systems might work seem flawed in some way (e.g., using some sort of checksum; unit testing; verifying build parameters). I did some searches both at centos.org and google, but couldn't find anything specific about the test(s) used to determine compatibility. I see the following in the CentOS 5.6 Release Notes: 6.3. Packages that have been upgraded in 5.6 since the 5.5 release * python-2.4.3-27.el5_5.3 Wouldn't subversion also be listed? CentOS 5.5 has subversion-1.4.2-4.el5_3.1 CentOS 5.6 has subversion-1.6.11-7.el5 Is this list generated automatically or is it maintained by hand? -Greg

Hello CentOS developer team, thank you very much for the release of CentOS 5.6. I have upgraded my server, notebook, netbook and workstation from 5.5 to 5.6 and everything works really fine so far, CentOS 5.6 seems to be rock solid. The only little problem happens on the upgrade of my server, since my web server doesn't start after reboot. But this was easy to fix since this error was known from the RHEL 5.6 upgrade. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=669963 I am grateful for the CentOS Project. Under Centos 5.5 on an x86_64 box I am seeing large memory usage associated with perl .so modules. On a 32-bit Centos 5.4 box the same script emits: 20 kB /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.8/i386-linux-thread-multi/auto/Time/HiRes/HiRes.so 4 kB /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.8/i386-linux-thread-multi/auto/Time/HiRes/HiRes.so The 2044 kB entry seems to be counted towards memory usage as reported by ps. /etc/hosts not resolving hostnames

I have modified /etc/hosts file with IP address and hostname entries. However, host command is returning 'Host vhost1.example.com not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)'. Also, apache is returning error on start as '[error] (EAI 2)Name or service not known: Could not resolve host name vhost1.example.com-- ignoring!' . The ssh worked fine and resolved the hostname correctly (ssh from same system to itself - just for test). Am I missing something here? I thought /etc/hosts will be referred for all lookups. Any help?? jM.

Exception error with 5.5 installation

Hi there -- I am trying to install the 64-bit version onto one of our servers. When I get to the point of loading various software packages, I normally select KDE desktop, and also make sure that CentOS extras is also selected. Once that is done, I click on Next to have the installation continue. Every attempt that I have made has resulted in an exception error occurring with the python packages. As a result, the installation fails. I have not been able to install CentOS since this problem started occurring. Does anyone know of a way I can get around this problem? Thanks. iptables package issue

I just did a test install off a netinstall iso to a mirror repo which left no /etc/sysconfig/iptables file in place. So a quick check: # yum whatprovides /etc/sysconfig/iptables --disablerepo=\* --enablerepo=base --enablerepo=updates --disableplugin=\* No Matches found Without that file iptables doesn't start as per the init script. Anyone know what may be awry? Thanks, jlc

The only PCI-X card I have is an old ICP Vortex RAID controller and the Dell hangs with that installed (BIOS is disabled). It's only for a tape drive so performance isn't really an issue. thanks

Controlling the order of /dev/sdX devices?

Hi CentOS 5.4(final) 2.6.18-164el5PAE. I am trying to prevent removable USB and eSATA devices from occupying /dev/sdX devices ahead of a 3ware RAID controller. For example: at boot, if a USB drive and eSATA HDD (connected to an LSI 1068E onboard controller, reflashed in "IT" mode to handle hotplug devices) were both present, they would occupy devices /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc, ahead of the RAID controller which ends up as /dev/sdd. As these are removable devices, they should normally get handled by custom udev script looking for adds matching KERNEL=="sd[c-z][0-9]" ,SUBSYSTEM=="block", so the volume handled by RAID controller gets grabbed by udev but fails to mount and subsequent udev plug events fails due the slots left empty below /dev/sdd. If no hotplug devices are present while booting, fstab handles mounting of the system and RAID volume: SATA system HDD /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 / RAID array LABEL=STORE /store ## mounts == /dev/sdb1 I realise this description is kind of a tangle, but i am essentially looking for a way to hard-map the 3ware RAID controller to /dev/sdb (UUID won't work as there are multiples of this system) before PCI (?) enumeration picks up the USB and LSI-managed devices so that udev can take care of the device at /dev/sdc and above. I've tried blacklisting the mpt and usb-storage modules and short-circuiting SUBSYSTEM=="block" devices in 05-udev-early.rules, all with zero or negative effect. rc.sysinit doesn't appear to be the right place and that's about as deep down as i know how to go. cheers, cs

Hello Everyone, I recently installed CentOS 5.5 x86_64 on a brand new ProLiant DL380 G7. I have identical OS software running reock-solid on two other DL380 ProLiant servers, but they are G6 models, not G7. On the G7, the installation went perfectly and the machine ran great for about 2 weeks, when it just seemed to "stop". The system stopped responding on the network, and there was no video on the console (or remote console via iLO). It would not reboot or cold boot through iLO, I actually had to hold the power to turn it off and then hit it again to power up. This happened several times within a few days of each other. Each time, there was no evidence in any logs of a problem - the system just seemed to stop or lock up. We did have a CPU problem light appear on the front, so HP came in and replaced the one 4-core CPU. Since then, it has run as long as two weeks, but still crashes randomly. I have the Samba3x packages installed since we are beginning to introduce Win7 clients into our environment. Googling "Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception" and "CentOS" produced many hits, but nothing that seemed to exactly match my problem. Since this is the only G7 server I have here right now, I can't reproduce the problem on another machine. The G6s I have running the identical version of CentOS have no problems. I am trying to determine if this is pointing to a hardware or software issue. Some of the Google results suggested using a Centosplus kernel - is this a good idea? The server is a HP DL380 G7 Server with 4 GB RAM (1 DIMM 1333 MHz), one 4-core CPU (2133 MHz), 4 built-in Broadcom "NetExtreme II BCM5709 II Gigabit Ethernet" NICs, and a P410 Smart Array Controller. Hello, I am trying to compile RHEL-6 kernel srpm on Fedora 14 and run into the following problem. Mirrors

I noticed that I didn't get any of the 5.6 updates rsynced yet, so I checked my mirror and then the mirrors list. This mirror is indeed not on the list anymore and also not on the status page. However, I see other mirrors still on the list that are lagging for days. And I see that this mirror has a full 5.6 directory (maybe not complete, though, but quite full). I don't see any removal announcement about it on centos-mirror either. So, I'm wondering if this mirror is now a mirror or not or if it has just fallen off the list somehow? Talking of: ftp://rsync.hrz.tu-chemnitz.de/pub/linux/centos/ I also notice that /5 is a directory and not a symlink as 4 and 3 are. But this is the same on mirror.centos.org. Why isn't it a symlink? I'm primarily wondering if RAID-10 is paranoid enough given the current quality of WD CaviarBlack drives (better than dirt-cheap consumer drives, but not enterprise grade). My second question relates to whether or not the added overhead of using something like qcow2 would be offset by the advantages of more space efficiency and the copy-on-write feature. I'd love to hear what other software RAID users think, especially regarding large-capacity drives. It's rare for a modern drive to hand out bad data without an accompanying error condition (which the md driver should handle), but I have read that uncaught bad data is possible and would not be flagged in RAID arrays which don't use parity calculations. Auto-updates -- Bad Idea?

Hello, As I've learned recently, I do not have any auto updates configured on my system. I see some posts on the web encouraging the use of "yum-cron", but I'd like to know what people feel about the use of automatic updates. That is, for a server (non-desktop) system, automatic updates could break things or have other unforeseen consequences, and that could happen at the worst of times, since the process runs regularly. On the other hand, for small businesses without highly trained sysadmins or ones with enough time to baby their servers, missing critical updates to, say openssl or some other mission-critical package could spell disaster. Is the only reasonable solution to schedule a "human cron" once a week to look at needed updates? Ouch. Thanks in advance for your considered opinions.

Printers, aka an old time sysadmin

Well, today, I feel like a real, old time sysadmin. Now, I didn't have to write a driver in assembly for the printer, but.... We got this huge, 44" HP Designjet z3200ps printer. Only supports Win and Mac. Fine, I hang it off of one of our servers on a subnet (at $0.96/foot paper, we're the only ones who print on it....). Then I'm thinking that all I really need is a .ppd. My co-worker, who's also got a Mac, d/l's the Mac driver and extracts the .ppd. The Windoze one is apparently buried in a dll, you see.... I then figured out how to hack a .ppd. First, I found an ifdef construction, for Mac-only information. That worked on the small paper (24" width roll, "small"). Then the real paper, the 42" stuff. Why HP sells a 44" printer, but 42" paper, dunno, but.... there's no option for large format printing. After a pointless waste of half an hour on HP's "live chat" (not sure how many chats the guy was on), he tells me there's no driver. I call HP support, and talk to someone who seems to know a little more... but is sorta fuzzy on .ppd's, and then tells me that there ought to be an option to set a custom size, and seems to confirm what I read (in vi) in the ppd, that there are no settings for 42" paper. So I hacked it, and added settings for 42"x34", and 42"x60" (the usual size for posters). A lot was cut, paste, and substitute, but the one gotcha is that the actual paper size that the printer sees is in points. Once I got that, it worked beautifully. Anyone needs any info about hacking a .ppd, feel free to email me; if you have a beast of a z3200ps, I'll be glad to send you a copy of mine. mark

File-system Corruption

Hi List, I suppose this isn't strictly CentOS but I'm talking about some 5.5 servers so I thought someone else here may have had the same issues; We power on servers at night via IPMI and shut them down the same way for automation. The problem I'm facing is that the servers are shutdown in about 2 seconds. IPMI provides remote access to the power features as we know so I don't think the OS has a chance to do a 'graceful' shutdown. One server in particular is told to shutdown at say 07:00am, the last scheduled task on there should finish around 06:30 so there is a half hour window for over run. It now has a corrupt XFS file system which I am repairing as we speak. I am wondering if this could be a possible cause of these problems? Perhaps if that last tasks over runs a couple of times and it gets powered off in the middle of the tasks? I am considering the use of SME 7.5.1 (centOS based) for my server needs, but I do want to use ZFS and I thus far I have only found information about the ZFS-Fuse implementation and unclear hints that there is another way. Phoronix reported that http://kqinfotech.com/ would release some form of ZFS for the kernel but I have found nothing. Can so. tell me if fuse-ZFS is more trouble than it's worth? Thanks in adv. Understanding yum automatic upgrades

Hello, Sorry if this is somewhat naive, but I'm a little confused as to what the criteria is for that which will get upgraded automatically by yum and what will not. I see in our logwatch messages from time to time that yum upgraded a bunch of stuff, but I also notice that yum will not upgrade other packages at all (easy example is clamav, but there are others). Can someone explain or point me to where I can read about the distinction between what is and is not subjected to automatic upgrade? Thanks!

Forcing IPv4 DNS lookups first before IPv6

Hello! I am having a strange issue with CentOS 5.4 that I cannot seem to solve. Every DNS lookup results in AAAA records being requested first before A records. As a result, this causes a large amount of unnecessary DNS traffic on the network. IPv6 has been completely disabled on these servers: /etc/modprobe.conf, ipv6 off and net-pf-10 off /etc/sysconfig/network, NETWORKING_IPV6=no lsmod | grep ipv6 shows the kernel module no longer loaded. Yet watching TCP dump shows that AAAA records are requested before A records every time a login is requested from one of our local machines to another. Is there some sort of configuration directive I can use to force IPv4 lookups first before IPv6? Or even better, stop IPv6 lookups all together?

OT Problem seeing slave drives.

This isn't specifically about cent os, but I am running cent os on this machine. I've got a Dell Dimension 2400 desktop pc. I've tried on a number of occasions to put a second hard drive in the machine, but I can't get the machine to recognize the second drive in BIOS. I'm going to try and keep this short and sweet. I've tried all that I know to try. I've set the jumpers on the drives to master and slave, I've tried setting the jumpers to cable select. I've changed the IDE ribbon cable. As far as I know, I've done all the trouble shooting steps that you'd do when having this problem. The only conclusion I can come up with, is that it's the BIOS. The one thing I haven't done is flash the BIOS, and I'm reluctant to do that. One other thing that I did try, was on the secondary IDE, I tried connecting a second CD drive, and the BIOS would not see it either. The machine will only see the drives that are connected to what would be the Master drive connection on the ribbon cable. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks Jim

php53 and pear

Hi all We require some packages installed through pecl (apc and memcache) which we have done on CentOS 5.5 by installing php 5.2 from testing and also installing php-devel and php-pear to much success! We would like to move to php 5.3 after 5.6 comes out but I note that there is no specific php53-pear package in testing and the php-pear srpm in the 5server directory on ftp rc com seems to be quite old. I also note that there was a php53-pear.spec posted in this list file with (?unsanctioned) mention of the possibility of this going in extras. Is it prudent to install pear using the php go-pear.phar method for php53 and will this then give me access to pecl though with the same downside as using cpan for perl (do not want) or will there be an "official" php53-pear rpm available through centos.org? I'm sorry if this has been answered before but my google-fu seems to be letting me down. regards mike

3.5 kernel panic on boot

Yes, I know 3.5 is old. However in this case it's required for a legacy app. a fresh install get's me: kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k block-major-104, errno = 2 followed by: VFS: Cannot open root device "cciss/c0d0p2" or 68:02 The system is an HP DL380 G4. any thought on what could cause this? the rescue system is able to mount the disk and grub-install works to re-install grub on the device. Door not hitting me on my way out

Sorry, folks. I wish our release developers well, and hope that they can open up their processes to allow much needed community involvment. But I've hopped to Scientific Linux and find it much more usable due to their willingness to publish updates even without the entire new release bundled, and the much timelier updates from the upstream vendor. php53 and bind97 are directly available for their verison 5.x release, and their version 6.0 has now taken over my testing environments. This makes EPEL's version of drupal, and various Samba 4 testing accessible, and I don't have to waste my time on backports that will be replaced by a release that is further, and further, and further behind. Perhaps in the future the configuration of the build and patch environments can be opened up, or the patching going on for the package rebundling can be published in just the way people with RHEL would publish their kernel patches, rather than presenting merely the results. But such ideas have been rejected as unnecessary, and even the suggestion was rejected with hostility. I know very well how much work such projects take, and regret that I was unable to assist further. My tweaks and bundles will now be going over to Fedora and Scientific Linux, rather than here or in the developer's list. Nico Kadel-Garcia <nkadel(a)gmail.com>

Hi. I'm currently trying to configure a kickstart script to do auto installs. We split up the partitions so that we have control on the mount security like setting no execute on the tmp portions etc . I keep hitting the same error : "Could not stat /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol_root --- No Such file or directory The device apparently does not exist; did you specify is correctly " Even after doing a manual install to generate the file lvm configuration I'm getting the same results. I have also deleted the whole virtual machine and started from scratch. interview request for ppl who have Shockwave/.Firefox working

For a long time now I've wanted to be able to watch videos. I've done the "try this!" and "try that!" method and it hasn't worked well. So I'm wondering if anyone running CentOS 5.5 has Shockwave on Firefox working. Currently it works for me with short videos-- up to two or three minutes long. However, when Shockwave is enabled, CPU usage jumps to 99%, sometimes even 100%! If I disable it CPU usage goes down to 1 - 5%. (For those who speak load avg, I've seen highs of 6 and 8... as opposed to the no Shockwave-now of 0.14 to 0.45.) So with the CPU already buried just by having Shockwave is enabled, if a video lasts longer than four minutes, gaps in the video's continuity begin to appear, and by ten minutes in the video is locked up altogether. What's everyone else's experience with this? Does anyone have a setup where they can view a 1.5-hour video normally... and maybe even work in their editor alongside it at the same time? If so, would you be open to explaining what hardware and software etc. you've got so that this works so well? Thanks. -- Anything is easy if you know how to do it.

Hi Folks, CentOS 5.5 - Postgresql 8.4 Installed - startet try to createuser -d- -a -p username get message could not connect to server: Connection refused Is the server running locally and accepting connections on Unix domain socket "/tmp/.s.PGSQL.0"? postrgesql.conf has line listen_addresses = '192.168.0.2' Why sockets (in /tmp are s.PGSQL.5431 ) What goes wrong? I have an other installation on other server with same conf. Files. There works all as I expect (no socket). Any hints welcome Thx Timothy

Best way to extend pv partition for LVM

I've replaced disks in a hardware RAID 1 with larger disks and enlarged the array. Now I have to find a way to tell LVM about the extra space. It seems there are two ways: 1. delete partition with fdisk and recreate a larger one. This is obviously a bit tricky if you do not want to lose data, I haven't investigated further yet. 2. create another partition on the disk, pvcreate another pv and then add it to the existing volume group with vgextend 3. a possible third way: increase the partition size. According to Google most if not all disk tools want to resize a file system as well and since there is no file system they will fail. I'm not sure about the status with this for the tools that come with CentOS (fdisk, parted, other?) No. 2 seems to be the easy way. Any objections? One I thought of: What does happen when I use No. 2 and I add new lvs? Can it happen that new lvs get "spanned" over both pvs or can I assure that a pv gets created using only one of the pvs? (I would prefer the latter, it doesn't matter if I use a few MB because of the ineffectiveness of allocation.) Thanks for recommendations. Kai

question on software raid

dmesg is not reporting any issues. The /proc/mdstat looks fine. md0 : active raid1 sdb1[1] sda1[0] X blocks [2/2] [UU] however /var/log/messages says: smartd[3392] Device /dev/sda 20 offline uncorrectable sectors The machine is running fine.. raid array looks good - what is up with smartd? cobbler installation of CentOS-5.5

I'm trying to install CentOS-5.5 on my new HP micro-server, which has no CD drive. I've set up cobbler and cobbler-web on my old server, and can access cobbler-web from my laptop. I have 3 queries about the installation. 1. Is there any advantage is using the 64-bit CentOS rather than 32-bit? 2. The CentOS OS seems to be available in 7 or 8 CDs. (I tried downloading the DVD ISO with ktorrent, but this was a complete failure. It started OK, but then created literally thousands of links to one file, which brought my server down, and left it in a state which was quite hard to clean up.) But how exactly do I "cobbler import" these? I see that for Fedora on my laptop I ran sudo cobbler import --path=/mnt/dvd --name=F14-i386 3. Is there actually a way of converting the 7 or 8 CD ISOs into a DVD ISO? I saw instructions that suggested concatenating them, and then running rsync against a DVD ISO, at <http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos/2011-January/104448.html>. I tried the site recommended, but could not access the DVD ISO. In fact, if I could access a DVD ISO, couldn't I download it directly? figuring out LogVol details for mount

Hi, I need to mount a LVM in rescue mode to create a new initrd image. I am not sure how do I fond out which LogVol is to be mounted. How do I find it out? In most of the configs I have used LogVol00 with ext3 filesystem which contains OS install. This particular system is not installed by me and I am not sure how do I find it out. I did try 'lvm lvs' command, but probably that's not the right command here. Any help? -- thanks, neuby.r.

KVM Host Disk Performance

Hello all, I'm having quite an interesting time getting up to speed with KVM/QEMU and the various ways of creating virtual Guest VMs. But disk I/O performance remains a bit of a question mark for me. I'm looking for suggestions and opinions .... This new machine has tons of disk space, lots of CPU cores and loads of RAM, so those are not issues. I currently have several software RAID-6 md's, each of which is about 700 GBytes. The md's are created as partitionable arrays, and I assign the resulting "raw" disk devices to each CentOS Guest OS, which then partitions the space according to its needs. Unlike using the more common "filesystem-in-a-file" method, the use of partitionable MD devices usually results in wasted disk space, but my aim is to provide the best performance possible with robust RAID. Is there a better-performing way of assigning disk space to Guest VMs? What about 'qcow2'? I understand its copy-on-write offers several advantages, but does it perform better than using partitionable md arrays or does the underlying filesystem overhead get in the way? Perhaps the native overhead of RAID-6 dual parity makes the whole question moot. Would the use of RAID-10 with hot spares be paranoid enough? I'm using 2 TByte drives which inherently have much greater chances of data errors, so I must keep data reliability in mind. I don't want to start a religious war over RAID and Guest VM disk methodology, but I have the luxury of trying various disk configurations until I get a reasonable balance between performance and reliability with these large drives. So many questions ... so much to learn. Lots of Googling around is quite useful but can lead to information overload :-) Cheers, Chuck

On my CentOS box that I use mainly as a web server, I have iptables set to log and reject anything that I don't expect. Cent OS clustering and Support.

Hi, We are a Channel product team within LSI and we are trying to add Cent OS 5.5 to our compatibility Matrix. We found out that LSI currently has a relationship with CentOS for another project on the Internal Storage division but not with the OS Certification team. We require some information on CentOS which will help us plan the deliverables. And considering the timelines we need to deliver at it will be great if someone from CentOS can help us out in this regard. If anybody else also can answer these in the mailing list, we would be grateful. The questions that we have are as follows:- 1) Cluster Support : * Does CentOS 5.5 provides native cluster support ? * Is there any cluster suite available for CentOS 5.5 ? * Can we use the cluster suite in CentOS 4 for 5.5. 2) Does CentOS have any self Certification tool which allows OEMs/Vendors to qualify the OS and post it in their compatibility matrix? One we start our qualification, we might need some help in resolving issues/defects on CentOS. Can we open a channel or Point of contact who will be able to help us out with such issues. WD RE4-GP Dropped From Raid

Hi All, I have a WD RE4-GP which dropped an Adaptec 51645 RAID controller. I ran a smartctl short test on the drive and it failed with a read error. So I ran the Western Digital's own diagnostic software (DLGDIAG), both the short and extended test on the drive and it passed with no errors. So I ran the smartctl short test again and again it failed. I then ran smartctl long test and that also failed at the same logical block address as the short test. Can anyone shed any light on this? Can I RMA the drive even if it passes Western Digital's own tests? Thanks in advance for any advice. Cheers, Steve

I can do "simply" search and replace with sed. However, I want to setup httpd.conf from a script that changes the default "/" which is presently: <Directory /> Options FollowSymLinks AllowOverride None </Directory> and change it to the following: <Directory /> Order Deny,Allow Deny from all AllowOverride None </Directory> How do you do that with scripts? thanks for the reply, Phil It would, were udev not inserting USB and/or eSATA drives at /dev/sdb1 and/or /dev/sdc1 and exposing the array to the udev rule intended to handle only removable devices (at sdc or sdd). The array then mounts unpredictably in /media/xxx-sdc1 or sdd1 - not what is wanted - depend on how many removable devices are plugged at the time of rebooting. Of course, a single removable device will camp at sdb, which is out of reach of udev so the whole hotplug thing is broken until someone removes all of the devices at site, allowing a clean boot. mapper correctly places the / filesystem higher in position in rc.sysinit, followed by start_udev (where the damage gets done) and finally fstab evaluation way down the line. I suppose i could just hardwire the array mount into rc.sysint to engage after modules get loaded and hopefully before start_udev, unless there is a better way to enforce it. I'm not sure at this stage (need to analyse that ~1000-line script) if there is a suitable insertion point. It would be really good if it could be done outside of rc.sysint in some predictable place. We're "stuck" (but not unhappily) with this kernel/rev for the foreseeable future - i have over 100 of these systems and they are housed behind VPN'd networks, which mitigates somewhat their inevitable vulnerabilities. regards, - csawyer 30. I am trying to prevent removable USB and eSATA devices from occupying /dev/sdX devices ahead of a 3ware RAID controller. For example: at boot, if a USB drive and eSATA HDD (connected to an LSI 1068E onboard controller, reflashed in "IT" mode to handle hotplug devices) were both present, they would occupy devices /dev/sdb and /dev/sdc, ahead of the RAID controller which ends up as /dev/sdd. As these are removable devices, they should normally get handled by custom udev script looking for adds matching KERNEL=="sd[c-z][0-9]" ,SUBSYSTEM=="block", so the volume handled by RAID controller gets grabbed by udev but fails to mount and subsequent udev plug events fails due the slots left empty below /dev/sdd. If no hotplug devices are present while booting, fstab handles mounting of the system and RAID volume: SATA system HDD /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 / RAID array LABEL=STORE /store ## mounts == /dev/sdb1 I realise this description is kind of a tangle, but i am essentially looking for a way to hard-map the 3ware RAID controller to /dev/sdb (UUID won't work as there are multiples of this system) before PCI (?) enumeration picks up the USB and LSI-managed devices so that udev can take care of the device at /dev/sdc and above. Virtualization platform choice

Some may be bored with the subject - sorry... Still not decided about virtualization platform for my "webhotel v2" (ns, mail, web servers, etc.). KVM would be a natural way to go, I suppose, only it is too bad CentOS 6 will not be out in time for me - I guess KVM would be more mature in CentOS 6. Any experience with the free "VMware vSphere Hypervisor"?. (It was formerly known as "VMware ESXi Single Server" or "free ESXi".) http://www.vmware.com/products/vsphere-hypervisor/overview.html I would need a tutorial about that... For example, does that run without a host OS? Can it be managed only via Win clients? nlockdmgr listen on privileged port

hey list! I am attempting to shore up some centos machines (ranging from centos 5 to centos 5.4) for pci compliance by changing the port that nlockdmgr listens on to function under a privileged port. So what I did was try to hardcode the port by editing /etc/sysconfig/nfs # TCP port rpc.lockd should listen on. LOCKD_TCPPORT=1011 # UDP port rpc.lockd should listen on. LOCKD_UDPPORT=1011 # And /etc/modprobe.conf alias eth1 e1000e alias scsi_hostadapter 3w-9xxx alias scsi_hostadapter1 usb-storage alias eth0 e1000e options lockd nlm_udpport=1011 options lockd nlm_tcpport=1011 and then restarting the pormap service. When I start the heartbeat configuration, I encountered a problem: ./ConfigureMe configure --prefix = /path/hb ..... ..... ..... checking for heartbeat / glue_config.h ...
