NIC bonding - missing eth0?

I have nic bonding (mode=802.3ad) setup on 2 servers, both running Centos 5.5 In the "Active Aggregator Info", on one reports 4 ports - which is correct - but the other only reports 3 ports. It's always eth0 that shows a different aggregator ID. Changing the cables around so it hits a different port on the switch makes no difference. The switch is correctly configured for the port channel. The only difference between the 2 servers is one is running Xen (kernel-xen-2.6.18-194.32.1.el5.centos.plus) so I have a few virtual interfaces and bridges. Any ideas what might be happening? working with multiple password protected iSCSI targets on one host

Hi, How do I setup multiple password protected iSCSI targets on Linux? I know that mounting a password protected iSCSI target requires modify these records with the appropriate values: node.session.auth.username = My_ISCSI_USR_NAME node.session.auth.password = MyPassword discovery.sendtargets.auth.username = My_ISCSI_USR_NAME discovery.sendtargets.auth.password = MyPassword But, now I need to mount another iSCSI target, from a different SAN that has a different username & password than whan I have configured here for the one already mounted. write-back cache question

I have a perc5i (and perc5e) raid controller in my poweredge 2970 running centos 5.5. The RAID controller config is set for write-back policy, which I can confirm by checking in OpenManage. I also called Dell and ran their reporting application and had them double check to make sure everything looks OK hardware wise and they confirm that it does Yet when CentOS boots is appears to use the write through policy as can be seen below from dmesg output. CentOS 5 on a Thinkpad T60 laptop

Hello, I'm considering buying a second-hand Thinkpad T60 (with 2 GB RAM), as a secondary laptop in order to run CentOS 5 on the field. My main focus is therefore to have something robust, reliable and above all well compatible with CentOS. Hibernate / suspend feature are important to me, because that's the main issue I have with CentOS on other laptops. apache 2 and php 5.2

Hi originally I installed php 4 on centos 5.5 and then a few repos including the remi repo to upgrade to php5, which seems to upgrade/work without any issues. However when I make a change to the /etc/php.ini file it doesn't look like apache is seeing it, for example if I change the post_max_size and upload_max_file to 25M each apache still sees the default 2M. I also removed the /etc/php.ini file and apache is able to start with no problems and it will still see the default 2M. I was wondering if anyone can tell me why apache is not taking the settings from the /etc/php.ini file and it works without that file. I will upgrade to 5.6 when it's out - BUT I'm not really angry when CentOS 6 would be CentOS 6.1 - if you want to be beta tester for a large distibution you still can shift to Ubuntu.. kmod-e1000e and Intel Network Card

Hi list It's my first message here, but I use CentOS from long time ago (sorry my language, I'm spanish from Colombia) I have a Intel board with an Integrated Network Card 82578DC. I've sucessfully installed the driver with the RPM kmod-e1000e; I've found it in ElRepo.org, and I've installed it via Yum. After I've installed the package (see this: http://lists.elrepo.org/pipermail/elrepo/2010-December/000416.html ), I do: ifdown eth1 modprobe -r e1000e ifup eth1 After these steps, my card works OK and get a valid IP address. However, when I reboot my machine, I must write those commands again. I've tried to put e1000e in /etc/modprobe.d/blachlist; however, it doesn't works. Does anubody knows what must I do to have my network card working from start? Thanks!

Hello CentOS Community Members, What is RH's be-all end-all justification for staying with an ancient code base for such important programs as BIND et al? A similar problem (to BZ561299) was first reported five (5) years ago on the isc.org mailing list. Is there any support among the CentOS community for a REPO of current vintage for such important functions as BIND et al? That question is based on the presumption that time is taking us to a more complete and correct implementation of the basic functions like DNS. Authentication Problems

Hi List, We have a CentOS VPS running a web site in a DC far away. The chap that dev's this site told me he couldn't SFTP in yesterday, his password was being rejected (I went to his desk to confirm and saw it was telling him the password was incorrect but neither him nor me had changed it and we are the only two with access to this VPS). So I logged in as root and reset his password, be he still couldn't log in (same problem, claiming the password was wrong). [root@server ~]# passwd webdevuser Changing password for user webdevuser. New UNIX password: Retype new UNIX password: passwd: all authentication tokens updates successfully. I tried to SSH in as the web dev user and it wouldn't let me in. Returning back to my root console window; [root@server ~]# su - webdevuser [webdevuser@server ~]# passwd Changing password for user webdevuser. Changing password for webdevuser. (current) UNIX password: passwd: Authentication token manipulation error Firstly; I am stracthing my head as to why his password was no longer working in the first place? Secondly; Why I can't reset it? Googling around many people suggest there is a discrepancy between the /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow files and by deleting /etc/shadow and using pwconv to recreate shadow and the same for /etc/groups, deleting gshadow recreating it with grpconv will solve the problem but I still can't login as the web dev user. Creating floppy image without root permissions?

Hello All: I've recently had to provision some RHEL and CentOS VMWare instances. There was no network connectivity so I had to use a kickstart floppy and DVD iso rather than installing from our repository. To create the floppy I used the following: As root: dd if=/dev/zero of=floppy.flp bs=1k count=360 mkfs.vfat floppy.flp mount -o loop floppy.flp /mnt/floppy cp base_kickstart.ks /mnt/floppy/ks.cfg umount /mnt/floppy It works, but now I need to automate the process and have to do with without root access. Is there a way to create a floppy iso with a single file without root access? I looked at fuseiso, but it appears that it still requires some root permissions.

Virtualization supporting 1000Mbps nics?

I've got xen-3.0.3-105.el5_5.5 running on Centos 5.5 and all is running smooth but I notice that any VMs running under it only have access to Realtek RTL8139C at 100 Mbps nics. We have 4 x 1G nics configured in a port channel so I'd really like to be able to give my VMs 1000Mbps nics. Does anyone know if this is possible and how to do it? If not, does KVM support faster nics because at this point it would be fairly simple to change. Using CentOS 5.5 x86_64. I am trying to install software that comes on two discs. I can start the install just fine, but when it comes to taking out the first disc and putting in the second, the system won't let me eject it. I remember reading something on the internet once about something needing to be enabled to allow this to work, but I can't find it now. Does anybody have a clue as to what I might be looking for? (Yes, the work around is to just mount both ISOs and not use real discs at all, but as administrator I understand that process and my users won't. However, they are familiar with the process of inserting disks.) I am trying to install on a DL320 proliant. The disk is not being recognized. It fails when setting up disk with "no devices" found. I dont get an sda or cciss either one. I tried to disable the on board smart array controller? That didnt seem to make a difference. Is there something special I need to do? Thanks, jerry

Most efficient/fastest way to see disk usage

Hi all, I use this command to see disk usage: du -cks * | sort -rn | while read size fname; do for unit in k M G T P E Z Y; do if [ $size -lt 1024 ]; then echo -e "${size}${unit}\t${fname}"; break; fi; size=$((size/1024)); done; done The data itself is around 200GB with lots of subdir and small files. The command takes for about 1 hour to finish. Is there a faster way to see the disk usage of some directories? Secondary objective is: To see which directories have changes (added/remove subdir/files) comparing to the previous data. I'm thinking of using "ls -laR" and "diff". But not sure. Thank you.

how do export a block device via eSATA?

Does any one know how to, if at all possible currently, to export a block device via eSATA? i.e. how do I do something like iSCSI, but over eSATA? I have a cheat ($15 probably?) media player at home (Egreat EG-M31B Network Media Tank - awesome little machine) that runs some flavor of Debian and can be connected to any PC via eSATA as an external HDD's. i.e. it exports the built-in HDD as a block device to the host (My laptop or PC). Now, the question is, how can I do this on Linux? Would I need a different eSATA card than the on-board eSATA port on most motherboards? Or would the on-board one work? The question is, how do I tell Linux to export a file system, or block device via the eSATA port? If any one has attempted this before, then please share some knowledge or pointers on the subject. I have several CentOS5 hosts in a VMware ESX 3.5.0 226117 environment using iSCSI storage. Recently we've begun to experience journal aborts resulting in remounted-read-only filesystems as well as other filesystem issues - I can unmount a filesystem and force a check with "fsck -f" and occasionally find errors. According to the RH5 Errata, the most recent package for scsi-target-utils is scsi-target-utils-1.0.8-0.el5.x86_64.rpm However the latest update via yum on CentOS is labeled scsi-target-utils-0.0-6.20091205snap.el5_5.3 Additionally, the package info says it is not compatible with iSCSI yet, which is false! There were some critical updates for this package according to RedHat, so how can I be sure that I am at the correct version? In looking at some other packages on my CentOS system, like httpd, I am noticing they are also out of date in regards to Red Hat updates. Is this common? People "usually" suspend their laptop, so that they can continue their work when they open the laptop. OK! Two choices [GNOME]: 1 - Menu -> Shut Down -> Suspend in this case, the gnome-screensaver locks the PC. but the gnome-screensaver is just a "normal process", and it could be killed e.g.: http://securitytube.net/USB-Autorun-attacks-against-Linux-at-Shmoocon-2011-… or using any method [video was just an example!!]. 2 - Menu -> Log out -> Switch user -> Suspend in this case, the GDM [???] protects the user [i mean it locks the PC from other users] Which one is more secure/safer?

Software RAID vs 'fake/ on-board RAID'

Setting: We are setting up a low usage server for an alfresco km/collaboration system It is a low-end server with a pair of 1.5 TB disks we will be mirroring The server comes with Intel's on-board 'fake raid/ low-end RAID' capability and for price reasons we have not selected a mainstream RAID card Prior thoughts: Searches on the net indicate no performance advantage, and possible performance disadvantages to the on-board RAID I expect Intel & the Centos product to be rough equivalents in quality I am leaning to software RAID for a simple reason of minimizing my administration & operational burden. If I need to perform repairs, obtain alerts it is the same administration toolset rather than a BIOS-based tool that seems to be accessible only through boot/ reboot. Question: Over a reasonable lifecycle are we better served going with the on-board or Centos' software RAID? Any issue with booting from the RAID (obviously RAID 1)? That hadn't occurred to me. And 1.2 is specified in the mdadm.conf file, which went right over my head. :-( Thanks Gerhard; mystery solved. Now all I need to do is wait for CentOS-6 to see if it correctly assembles all members of the arrays at boot time. I suspect the evaluation copy of RHEL-6 is not really up to date, so there may be issues with mdadm. I did take a look around the RedHat bugzilla site and saw a couple of things that might be related to the problem. Chuck

Some "other OS" are creating 1.2 per default. But you can change that on the command line. If that's the case it's not a bug but a feature.. Some RAID-6 observations ... RHEL-6 vs CentOS-5.5

Hello all, In the process of building a new VM box to replace several individual CentOS servers, I've had the "interesting" experience of running both CentOS-5.5 and RHEL-6 (eval copy) as I build out the hardware based on a Supermicro motherboard. A couple of observations regarding RAID-6: - RAID-6 arrays created on RHEL-6 don't seem backward compatible with CentOS-5.5. This may or may not be expected behaviour, but it makes me wonder if forward compatibility might be a problem for those of us migrating large RAID-6 arrays from CentOS-5 to -6 systems. The main observations are that the md superblock is declared bad, and I get those boot-time messages claiming the available blocks are less than the configured size. As a result, the RAID arrays are not made available on CentOS-5.5. - A total of 8 RAID-6 arrays in RHEL-6 are built with 2TB data disks plus a hot spare. However, every time I boot the system some, but not all, of the hot spare partitions are randomly missing. Using mdadm to manually add the spare partition back into an array always works. There are 4 array partitions per disk, and the largest single array is just over 2 TBytes of useable space. There are two groups of 5+1 drives spread across two SAS/SATA controller cards, and this random behaviour can occur on either one. Rebooting gets me a different set of missing hot spare partitions. The only error messages I get are the mdmonitor "missing spares event" emails ... nothing in dmesg. The host OS has its own RAID-1 (+ hot spare) arrays on a separate set of disks and controller, and those arrays always come up correctly. I've checked and double ckecked the mdadm.conf file to make sure the ARRAY, DEVICE and 'devices=....' statements are correct. Using mdadm to shut down an array and then reassemble it always seems to work properly, but something random is happening at boot-time assembly. It's only the hot spare partitions that don't appear, never the data partitions. Weird. I'm hoping CentOS-6 doesn't present me with the same problem. Hi all, Few questions. Does DHCP failover work with statically assigned nodes? Seems like the failover statements only work in shared networks with non bootp clients? I'm assuming Centos 6 will have DHCP v4.2? Currently 5.5 ships with v3.0.5b. And will DHCP v4.X have easier failover implementation? Thanks in advance, - aurf

Dear mailing list members, There was a branch about clusters, but I have a certain task. There are two servers with CentOS 5.5 installed. The servers are working with Zabbix (monitoring system for traffic, using a MySQL), wiki and RT (all are using Apache). If one server will have became not available then necessary start these services on another server with replication of data. Can I use the Red Hat Cluster Suite for it at CentOS? ipsec with ipv4 and ipv6 not working

Hello, How do I find out what is happening to my packets thru my ipsec tunnel. They just seem to disappear on the remote side. I have successfully got the pings thru when everything has an ipv6 address, but am not successful when trying to connect two ipv4 lans across an ipv6 ipsec tunnel. All fw chains both 4 and 6 are set to ACCEPT. VPN inside VPN?

Hi all, Just wondering if VPN inside VPN is possible? I've created PPTP VPN in the office. Then from home, first I need to use company's official AT&T VPN. Then after connected, I fire up the PPTP VPN client. Got connected, but cannot ping the PPTP gateway, and half minute later the PPTP got disconnected. No obvious error message in the PPTP log. mount the wrong device after system recovery

Hi, I am recovering a CentOS 5.4 system. I've copied all partitions into the recovery system. I've installed grub boot loader. However, the original system is using /dev/sdb1 for root (/), while the recovery system is using LVM (/dev/vg0/lv1) for root (/). When recovery system boots, I got the panic error: * Mounting /dev/sdb1 on /sysroot * Mount: mounting /dev/sdb1 on /sysroot failed: No such file or directory * Mount: mounting /dev on /sysroot/dev failed: No such file or directory * * switching / to /sysroot * Switch_root: bad newroot /sysroot * Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! I've changed the recovery system fstab to use the correct devices. I deleted recovery system etc/lvm/cache/.cache file. But it still doesn't work. What am I missing? Thanks, - xinhuan

I am forwarding traffic on port 8080 to port 80 with following rule. # iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -i eth0 -p tcp --dport 8080 -j REDIRECT --to-port 80 # iptables-save However, I am unable to add it directly in /etc/sysconfig/iptables. I think it is used only for filter table and not nat table. So where do nat table rules go? Any help? - cs.

iSCSI disk preperation

I am currently going through the process of installing/configuring an iSCSI target and cannot find a good write up on how to prepare the disks on the server. I would like to mirror the two disks and present them to the client. Mirroring isn't the question, its how I go about it is the problem. When I partitioned the two drives and mirrored them together, then presented them to the client, it showed to the client as a disk out no partion on it. Should I partition the drive again and then lay the file system down on top of that? Or should I delete the partitions on the target server and just have sda and sdb mirrored, then when the client attaches the disk, then partion it (/dev/sdc1) and write the file system. Thanks

From OO only the message: printer-problem - no more. Second printer is from far (Cupsd) in the network. Works well. But what's about the local printer? Any hints? Thx Timothy

Hi ! I think one of my machine got hacked, but I can figure out from where... I found some suspicious file in /bin and /usr/bin directories that are owned by user id 122, where this machine doesn't a userid 122. So, does anyone hav a centos 3.9 install arround that can send me the info about (filesize, md5, modification date) these file : /bin : ls netstat ps /usr/bin/ dir find md5sum pstree slocate tee top What tiped me off, I was sudoing to another user, and swas this message : "Unknown HZ value! Hi ! We are curently deploying an 8 nodes cluster where we have a RHEL 6 license at great costs (~14 k$/y). It will be our new production environment for mission-critical services. Now our aging developpement server (old p4 with 1.5 gig of ram) need to be updated. We will be installing on hardware as close as possible to the new production servers, just not in a rack... For the developement server, I won't be needing the RH support (and price that goes with it). So I wsish to install it under CentOS. But 6 isn't out yet. (by the way, when ;-) ?). I do have a spare slot in my rhn that I can install the new server with. Will RHEL 6 be as easy to switch to CentOS 6 as were RHEL/CentOS 5 ? That is install a couple of rpms, yum update and voilà ? I did go through the board's BIOS menus several times and could find only one fan control option, which ranges from always-fast for maximum performance to almost-silent for workstation use. No matter what the setting, the fans may start out slow but eventually jump to high speed. Updating the BIOS to the latest version made no difference. I also noticed that at all times the BIOS reports the CPU temperatures as "Low" no matter what the fan speed. The coolers are always cold to the touch. I sure hope I don't have a defective board ... it's a royal pain to have to remove one from a large server. I booted Ubuntu but the live-CD version doesn't have a working 'fancontrol' utility. I'd be tempted to install Ubuntu Server but I much prefer staying with CentOS and KVM to match all of the guest virtual machines it'll be running. Time to go through the mobo manual with a fine-tooth comb. :-) Chuck

system clock

I am running CntOS 5 with Gnome. Every now and then I have noticed that the computer will somehow get the time wrong by several hours. Is there a simple way to adjust the time? So far the only way I have found is to boot into windows (it is a dual boot system), make the change there, and then get back into CentOS. Older versions of Red Hat and Fedora let you do it by right-clicking on the time display, if I recall correctly, but setting the time isn't one of the options in CentOS. Thanks Buz Davis

Does anyone know if 4k sectors will be handled better by the kernel in Centos6? selenium rc server - run it on a specific display help!

Dear all, i'm trying to run multiple selenium rc server on a centos box (different ports) with developers connecting to it through VNC (different respective ports) to check their automated test result. i can easily do the above manually (when it comes to running RC server). though automating the process is proving to be difficult. can anyone guide me on how to run a service on a specific display in an automated process? right now if i connect to a vnc session (any port) and i run it manually through iterm, it works normally. though setting an cron job that does the above, isnt working (rc opens in shell instead of on each dev's assigned display)

However, the host receiving the data must have a properly tuned TCP/IP stack." My question is: So Why Does the original OpenSSH has "limited statically defined internal flow control buffers"?? It could be way faster, even 10x!! With the HPN-SCP path it could be the descendant of FTP! Why aren't there any ""OpenSCP packages""? ('normal SCP+HPN-SCP path+no local user needed for SCP'ing+chroot by default') Any opinions? Thank you!

I have 2 script. Script "A", Script "B". Script "A" is regulary watching the "dhcpacks" [dhcp release is configured to 2mins] in the logs, for the past 2 minutes. it writes the MAC addresses to a file [/dev/shm/dhcpacks-in-last-2min.txt] every 2 minutes. Ok, this is working, active clients are in this file. Super! Script "B": http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=wvhwhPWu I'm trying to create a script, that watches the changes in "/dev/shm/dhcpacks-in-last-2min.txt" file [in every 1 sec]. Ok. But: my "watcher" script [the pastebined] is not working fine...sometime it works, sometime it send that someone "XY logged out", but it's not true! nothing happened, and the problem is not in the Script "A". Can someone help me point out, what am i missing? How can i watch a file [in every sec], that contains only MAC addresses, and if someone doesn't get dhcpack in 2 minutes, the file "/dev/shm/dhcpacks-in-last-2min.txt" changes, and that clients MAC address will be gone from it, and i need to know, who was it [pastebined my script..but somethings wrong with it]. Thank you for any help..i've been pathing my script for days now.. :\

Fan speed control on Supermicro X8DAL board with CentOS

Hello folks, I'm having a difficult time trying to figure out why the CPU cooling fans run at full speed on my Supermicro X8DAL-3 motherboard. There doesn't seem to be any variable speed (the fans are PWM compatible) ... they either idle at almost nothing, or suddenly burst into a high-pitched scream that gets my ears bleeding after a few seconds. Once they jump to warp-10, they remain there. The "Super-I/O" chip on this board is a Winbond W83627DHG which does the temperature and voltage monitoring. Is anyone aware of which driver or kernel module I need for that chip in order to get control of the fans? The Supermicro web site and the board's manual aren't any help. Fresh installs of CentOS-5.5 and RHEL-6 don't exert any control by default. Installing the lm_sensors package and probing with the 'sensors' command didn't help either. Slowly going deaf ....... The speedups in building RPM's with "mock" from the EPEL packages for RHEL 6 are *profound*, especially if your environment is like mine and you have thousands of user id's. The issue seems to be the handling of "/var/log/lastlog" and similar files, which are otherwise quite large and take significant time to compress and uncompress when laying out new mock environments. Karabhir, what are the odds of encouragng a switch to http://mirrors.kernel.org/fedora-epel/6/mock-1.1.8-1.el6.src.rpm, and backporting it to centos/5/5/extras ? It's working very well for me, and I think it would be a helpful improvement in RPM building for both the CentOs 5.6 and CentOS 6 efforts.

Noted that xterm by default uses 24 lines per window. I have reviewed /etc/termcap looking for a specific entry for xterm that I can edit to change the ln#24 to ln#25 for our application. When I used RedHat there was an editable option to change the number of displayable lines as is done in putty. LiveCD System recovery - Mounting LVM?

Hi, I am trying to recover data from my old system which had LVM. The disk had two partitions - /dev/sda1 (boot, Linux) and /dev/sda2 (Linux LVM). I had taken a backup of both partitions using dd. Now I am booting of CentOS live cd for system restore. I recreated partitions like previous system using fdisk and then used dd to dump all the data onto it. I would like to mount sda2 as LVM, but I don't know how to do that. Any steps or howto mount LVM manually would be really helpful. I think I can recover the system once I am able to access sda1 and sda2. Any help? jM.

Hello Jatin This might mean that you don't have the drivers for the wireless card installed. My laptop has a button that when press switches the wireless card on and a LED turns blue. If I don't have the drivers installed then the light does not turn blue. Recovering LVM volumes

Hello all I have two sets of eIDE hard drives from earlier servers, one centos & one fedora. Both were LVM volumes with three or four physical disks, with ext3 fs. One disk, maybe even the boot one may even be missing, either from one or both sets and we do not know the disk order. I got these left from an earlier sysadmin who left the company & nobody know what's what. I need to recover data so I need to backup each of the disks to a disk image file first, then find block-size/recover lvm metadata on the volume, mount the volume to my current server and recover whatever files can be recovered manually. My question is: - what switches to be used with dd in creating the image, so that I retain the lvm disk data, for future recovery, if I mess up the recovery job? Can you please give the actual command assuming disk is connected at /dev/sdb? - How do I find the blocksize used by the disk & how do I get the meta-data and mount the disk to current lvm fs. Request please give me step by step process. I am finding the howtos & examples on the net very daunting as most of them have co-issues of raid etc. Mine is a plain lvm spanning multiple disks. I don't have expertise of this level & suddenly my boss is expecting me to perform a miracle. Please help. With best regards. Sanjay.

Hi All: Has anyone tried using an LSI MegaRAID 320-2E PCIe RAID Controller in an HP DL380G5 (of any HP G5 DL for that matter) running CentOS 5? It looks like it should work but it would be nice to know that someone has already done it before I start going to all the effort and expense of building the box. I have a spare DL380 and a couple of IBM EXP400 disk arrays that I would like to configure as a backup database server. Any and all comments will be appreciated. Lost root access

So on a virtual server the root password was no longer working (as in I couldn't ssh in anymore). Only I and one other know it and neither of us have changed it. No other account had the correct privileges to correct this so I'm wondering, if I had mounted that vdi as a secondary device on another VM, browsed the file system and delete /etc/shadow would this have wiped all users passwords meaning I could regain access again? (This is past tense because its sorted now but I'm curious if this would have worked? Hi, I installed CentOS 4.8 (not CentOS 5) on VMware Fusion using an ISO file I downloaded. During the installation, it asked me to enter a user name and its password. I tried to enter root for the user name, but it would not let me do that. So I had to enter a non-root user name. So I did not have the root user name and password when the installation completed. I only had a non-privileged user name, and could not do any sudo work. How can I solve this problem? I noticed that CentOS 5 (not the 4.8 I needed to install) asking to enter the password for root during the installation. But I need to install CentOS 4.8, not 5. Thank you. Jerry

We have DELL R900 server with 128GB RAM (CENTOS 5.5)in it. This server only have one application running and few people use it. Every week I ata least get one or two messages from monitor tool mail to me say: Message=Memory Utilization is 92.02%, crossed warning (80) or critical (90) threshold. Since server have 128 GB RAM and only 1 application. I really don't belive that. Does there has some way can check memory utilitation ? Thanks.

I took Les' advice and built a connection map of the 15 drives. The Disk Utility GUI turned out to be useful once I determined the SATA breakout cable order and labelled each with its PHY number. Knowing that lets me use the GUI to clearly identify a failed drive, which shows up as a PHY#. I'm normally a command-line kinda guy but this utility is something I really like on RHEL-6. I hope it's the same on CentOS-6. I'll organize the disk arrays with this trial version of RHEL, on the assumption that CentOS-6 simply picks them up as-built. Chuck

hp laptop

I have a new hp laptop, I installed centos 5.5 on x86_64. I was only seeing one core in /proc/cpuinfo. The CPU is core i5 M450 which should be dual core. So I put a more recent kernel on the machine, 2.6.34.7 did the compile and all - rebooted and I still only see one core in /proc/cpuinfo. the i5 M450 is a dual core cpu. In my case, the drives are segregated into several 3-drive bays which are bolted into the case individually, so removing each one to compare serial numbers would be a major pain, since I'd have to unbolt a bay and remove each drive one at a time to read the label. The use of the new RHEL-6/CentOS-6 'udevadm' command nicely maps out the hardware path no matter the order the drives are detected/named, and since hardware paths are fixed, I just have to attach a little tag to each SATA cable with that path number on it. One thing I did was reboot the machine *many* times to make sure the controller cards were always enumerated by Linux in the same slot order. I also notice that the RHEL-6 DriveInfo GUI application shows which drive is giving trouble, but it only maps the controllers in a vague way with respect to the hardware path. (At least that's what I remember seeing a couple of days ago, I could be mistaken.) On this particular machine I don't have the luxury of per-drive LED activity indicators, so whacking each drive with a big read won't point the way (but I have used that technique on other machines). I didn't have the funds to buy the hot-swap bays I would have preferred. I may retrofit later. Your suggestions are well taken, but the hardware I have doesn't readily allow my use of them. [OT] Best way to get dhcpd messages piped to a web service.

Starting off, it is important not to loose any dhcp messages, especially during log rotation.
