I am trying to use the following set (all from standard repositories): centos (5.5) + python 2.6 + sqlalchemy + mysql. Squid and SELinux

Hi. I'm trying to setup squid with SELinux, the problem i encounter is taht i want to add another directory for cache, in this system we have a home partition with huge space, i create a squid dir and add the path with semanage: semanage fcontext -a -t squid_cache_t '/home/squid(/.*)?' i check the files and are in the good context: drwxr-xr-x squid squid user_u:object_r:squid_cache_t . drwxr-xr-x squid squid system_u:object_r:home_root_t .. drwxr-x--- squid squid user_u:object_r:squid_cache_t 00 drwxr-x--- squid squid user_u:object_r:squid_cache_t 01 ... But when i want start it i get this: type=AVC msg=audit(1296442326.932:739661): avc: denied { search } for pid=30924 comm="squid" name="/" dev=sda3 ino=2 scontext=user_u:system_r:squid_t:s0 tcontext=system_u:object_r:home_root_t:s0 tclass=dir I know that the solution is to mount the huge partition on /var/spool/squid, i'm a newbie to SELinux, and want to know if it's posible to archive this. The more I look into the whole problem the more I realize that I've overstated the difficulty, now that I know how to map out the hardware path for any given /dev/sdX I might need to replace. I've never dug as deeply into this before, mostly because I never could find the spare time. I'm happy with simply writing a little script which accepts a /dev/sdX device name argument and reformats the output of: 'udevadm info --query=path --name=/dev/sdX' to extract the hardware path. It's a bit cleaner than the current RHEL-5/CentOS-5 'udevinfo' command. Using the numeric path assumes knowledge of how the motherboard sockets are laid out and the order in which I/O controller channels are discovered, of course. It's then not difficult to trace a failed drive by attaching little tags to the SATA cables from the controller cards. The real key is to carefully label each SATA cable and its associated drive. Then the little mapping script can be used to identify the faulty drive which mdadm reports by its device name. It just occurred to me that whenever mdadm sends an email report, it can also run a script which groks out the path info and puts it in the email message. Problem solved :-) So even though I figured out how to add 'alias' symlink names to each disk drive, I'm not going to bother with it. It was a very useful learning experience, though. Chuck

Setting up persistent LUNs

Hello everyone, I am trying to setup persistent LUNs and having problems. I've been following instructions I found on the web and they refer to editing /etc/scsi_id.config file and adding options=-g line there. After doing so, I should be able to run scsi_id -g -s /dev/sd* and get proper results. I've modified file /etc/scsi_id.config appropriately: [root@psrwjmsafs1 etc]# grep options /etc/scsi_id.config vendor="ATA",options=-p 0x80 options=-g but whenever I run scsi_id -g -s /b/sde1 - i get nothing. [root@psrwjmsafs1 etc]# df -k |grep sde /dev/sde1 1754602560 93383616 1572090328 6% /test How come? Am i missing something? Thank you! Asya

limiting yum url question

Hi, I need to configure yum to limit the number of URLs going out for security reason. I don't find a configuration for include option. I do find an exclude option in /etc/yum/pluginconf.d/fastestmirror.conf. It would be impossible to exclude every url in this file. What is the best way to limit the traffic going out interest for yum? Is the local network repository a better way or does there exist an include option that I am not aware of? Thanks, --xinhuan

How to relocate $HOME directory

Hi there, As you know, $HOME is generally located at "/home/$username" by default. I would like to re-locate all users' $HOME directories to something like "/export/home/$username" without having a hassle/trouble. Initially, I've thought of just copying them to the new directory (under /export/home/xxx), but guessed it might trouble for the normal use (I'm pretty new to CentOS, although many experiences with Debian/Ubuntu). Is there any good tricks (or caveats) when moving users' home directory cleanly with CentOS? (I'm with CentOS 5.5 x86_64) Cheers, Soo-Hyun

syslog socket limit

Hi, Syslogd has an option "-a socket". According to man page, this additional sockets is limited to 19. Currently I do need to have more than 19 sockets that syslogd needs to listen on. How can I accomplish that if I don't want to change syslogd.c code? Thanks, - xinhuan

my server is on centos 5.5,it is just a new reinstall system i build a php depend on server and used nginx,php,mysql ssh is default 22 port The system perfomance good a few time.but it is always happen a problem only need hardware reboot to solve.the server is on idc.so i can not see the local screen information. the appearance is: 1.it can not use ssh to connect,it show server is down or rebooting 2.ping is ok 3.http can show nginx's information(nginx/0.8.46),but can not load right page,and it show 403 forbiden page i use another server use ssh -vv xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx,and the responce is: SSH2_MSG_KEXINIT sent close sshd hangs after SSH2_MSG_KEXINIT sent i do not know what happen,please give me a good answer thanks erverbody

OT: Recommendations for a virtual storage server

Hi all, I need to install a virtual machine acting as a virtual storage server under CentOS 5.x (using kvm, xen, virtualbox or vmware). This virtual storage machine needs to server storage to another ESXi server and at the same time to the host where is installed. This is due to the limitations of hardware I have available. Both hosts needs to server several machines. It is very important that the virtual machine consumes the least resources possible (host has 5GB RAM and i need to run three virtual machines minimum, including this storage server as a virtual machine). Hi All, On one of my servers I have a personal account and root. I disable root for ssh logins and run ssh on an alternative port. When 'scp'ing files I usually scp them up, then ssh in 'su' root and move them to /var/www/html. I can sftp I realize, but what group can I add my personal account to, but not root, so I can sftp in and put the files in /var/www/html? Secondarily /var/www/html/<my website> is owned by root:root, can I change this to something else so my sftp'ing is easier? apache:apache as owner? -Jason

Building RPMs for CentOS

Hi. Some times i need to build packages for CentOS, the major requeriment is build some missing module or package newer version required to run some sotware. I setup a mock build enviroment to compile packages, all is working as expected, but i enconter problem to share this work in a source repo, i try to figure out how other people are making this, in CentOS i have no idea on which source repo are kept the package metadata, specs and patches, but in other repos, epel for example it only versions specs and patches, all binary files are downloaded in the time that the srpms are built to send to mock (koji in their case), fedora is swiching from a Makefile per package to a fedpkg tool to work with package sources. I see that a friend will be spectool, and some of scripting i can get a build system from source version control, but i think that this already is made, so i'm don't want to reinvent the well, i prefer help other people in make more robust system. There is a currently model for package metadata store and common task work? Regards.

RAID support in kernel?

Hello. I'm setting up a computer that will run 'CentOS 6 server'. The MB is an Asus with a hw raid controller (Promise PDC-20276), which I want to use in RAID-1 mode. I noted (from a MB website) that it also needs a driver - which is probably why it's called a 'fakeraid'. So, I've been trying to determine if any recent kernels support this chip. Using google.com/linux, I found lots of hits dating about 2002 - 04, and referencing the 2.4 kernel (which had the driver compiled into it). But, nothing newer. I checked kernel.org and kernelnewbies.org - I see that raid-1 is supported. But, I can't find any reference to this chip. How can I find out what drivers are compiled into a given kernel? Or, basically what hardware a given kernel supports?

Hello list members, My adventure into udev rules has taken an interesting turn. I did discover a stupid error in the way I was attempting to assign static disk device names on CentOS-5.5, so that's out of the way. But in the process of exploring, I installed a trial copy of RHEL-6 on the new machine to see if anything had changed (since I intend this box to run CentOS-6 anyway). Lots of differences, and it's obvious that RedHat does things a bit differently here and there. My focus has been on figuring out how best to solve my udev challenge, and I found that tools like 'scsi_id' and udev admin/test commands have changed. The udev rules themselves seem to be the same. Regarding networking, all of my 'ifcfg-*' files from CentOS-5.5 worked well, including bridging for KVM. Of course, one of the first things I did was remove that atrocious NetworkManager package ... it needs to be rewritten to make it a *lot* more intuitive. RedHat uses it during installation to manually configure the NICs, which I think is a mistake. I much prefer the way CentOS anaconda has done it so far, as a separate install menu form. The performance of the machine seemed to be better with the newer kernel, which is encouraging. I suspect we can look forward to a number of improvements. I've just managed to scratch the surface. I do expect there may be a few challenges for those of us upgrading a system from 5.x to 6, where some user-written admin scripts could break depending on the system commands they use. I look forward to CentOS-6 and all the goodies we can expect, and I'm quite happy to wait until the CentOS crew does their thing before releasing it ... they deserve a lot of credit for doing a thorough job all these years. Amazon EC2 - building a minimal centOS ebs bootable image

Hello Looking to build CentOS based micro EC2 instance bootable from Amazon EBS. Want that the image be minimal, so that I can add only the rpms I want. Despite looking could not find a way to import a CentOS image from scratch or an existing minimal CentOS image that is bootable from EBS. My server must must persist, as I cannot handle issues with a dynamic server, so I want to use a server that can boot from EBS. Am a EC2 newbie and a follow the instructions kind of a Sys Admin ;-) Please guide me to links, howtos and give experienced advice, in general. With best regards. Sanjay.

Not the line number of the statement with the recent module. So I think, iptables is missing something, What? When used, this will narrow the match to only happen when the address is in the list and was seen within the last given number of seconds. [!] --hitcount hits This option must be used in conjunction with one of --rcheck or --update. When used, this will narrow the match to only happen when the address is in the list and packets had been received greater than or equal to the given value. This option may be used along with --seconds to create an even nar- rower match requiring a certain number of hits within a specific time frame. Without -hitcount the rule is worthless. Suggestions? Cold install kernel .config file

Convey uses a highly modified CentOS kernel to work with our attach coprocessor. Currently to setup a system for delivery we do a cold install using a "stock" CentOS cold install using kickstart. During that cold install we lay down our modified kernel and reboot the system with that kernel. After the reboot we are able to access the coprocessor management processor and down load updated firmware then reboot the system to have a completed install. My goal is to be able to boot a "modified" kernel on the cold install step so we can download the firmware updates and eliminate the second boot. I have tried using using the bzImage generated from the modified kernel build but that kernel fails to be able to load the kickstart file :-( I have done searches trying to find the .config file used to build the kernel booted during cold install but have had no luck. I am guessing I have either have too much or too little included in the kernel. I tried to make sure everything I thought was needed were not modules but included in the kernel. Recommendation for a Linux alternative to Centos - ATH9K disaster

I persuaded a reluctant friend to buy a new computer. I enthusiastically extolled the joys and benefits of Centos and promised to install it on his new machine - dual booting with Micro$oft Windoze 7. His super-duper new laptop arrived. Acer, AMD 4 core, fast etc. but not as nice looking as my impressive HP DV5. The wireless refused to connect. After 8 hours on Saturday I could sometimes see hubs in the neighbourhood but could not connect to my own hub using WPA2. iwlist wlan0 scan produced technical details of local hubs - but still could not connect. NetworkManager sometimes froze. Spent many hours Googling for his wifi adaptor Altheros AR928K which uses a driver known as ATH9K. Many others have had a similar problem. Kernel 2.6.27 apparently includes this driver but Centos 5.5 is 2.6.18. On my Sony Vaio netbook I abandoned XP and installed Centos 5.5. No wifi (yet XP had) but luckily for me I eventually discovered the Altheros AR8132 needed ATL1E which, for Centos 5.5, means a kernel modification. Luckily it is on Elrepo as kmod-atl1e. A quick Yum and I was connected. Many thanks to Elrepo. The netbook comes to life with Centos. Its now a really usable machine. XP on a netbook was pure crap. However ATH9K for Centos 5.5 does not exist. This afternoon I had to tell my friend his brand new computer is incompatible with Centos and wifi. Please can anyone recommend a suitable Linux variant with a kernel >= 2.6.27 that is a bit like Centos ? Does anyone know if Centos 5.6 will be on 2.6.18 and whether it will have drivers like ATH9K ? Static assignment of SCSI device names?

Hello list members, In CentOS-5.5 I'm trying to achieve static assignment of SCSI device names for a bunch of RAID-60 drives on a Supermicro motherboard. The "scsi_id" command identifies all drives ok. The board has one SATA controller and three SAS/SATA controllers ... standard on-board ICH-10 ATA channels, an on-board LSI SAS/SATA controller, and two add-on SAS/SATA contoller cards. There are 13 drives in all, spread across the four controllers, all configured for Linux software RAID. The problem is in management of the drive names and figuring out which drive to pull in case of failure. Unfortunately the BIOS scan detects only the three drives connected to the ICH-10 SATA controller. That's ok because that's where the RAID-1 boot drives are. However, when the kernel starts it assigns those drives last, not first. For this reason I want to use a set of udev rules to assign specific names to the drives plugged into specific ports (to maintain my sanity :-) ). Identifying drives by their ID string (which includes the drive's serial number) and assigning names in the rules works ok. BUT, what happens when I have to swap out a failed drive? The serial number (and possibly model number) changes, and the udev assignment should fail, probably assigning an unexpected /dev/sd? name. RAID rebuild would choke until I change the MD device assignment. Is it possible to assign SCSI drive names by hardware path instead? I especially want the three RAID1+spare boot drives to always be assigned sda/sdb/sdc, because that sorts out other issues I'm having in CentOS-5. In the udev rules file I tried piping the output of "scsi_id -g -i -u -s /block/..." through "cut" to extract the path, but I get no match string when I run "udevtest" against that block device. Does the "PROGRAM==....." clause not recognize the pipe symbol? I tried a little shellscript to provide the RESULT match string, but udevtest didn't like that. Is there a supported way to predictably assign a drive name according to the hardware port it's plugged into ... it would make swapping drives a lot easier, since it becomes 'drive-id-string' agnostic. Better yet, is there any way to tell the kernel the order in which to scan the controllers? I'm also hoping the problem doesn't radically change when I install CentOS-6 on this box. I'm using CentOS-5 just to get practice in using KVM and RAID-60. Thanks for any advice you can offer. Chuck

How to disable screen locking system-wide?

I found mention of a libsrtp rpm, <http://qutecom.ipex.cz/RPMS/srtp-1.4.4-1.i386.rpm > in these instructions, <http://www.voip-info.org/wiki/view/Asterisk+SRTP> but it is unreachable (by me, anyway). For various reasons which seemingly fail the necessary/sufficient tests with the benefit of hindsight, I attempted to migrate a shell machine which is the beach front from which I work (not a production server) from CentOS 5.5 to Scientific Linux 5.5 yesterday. Karanbir is quoted on this list as having said something like: "All that you should need to do is install centos-release, remove redhat-release rpms and just yum update the machine, which should bring in all packages changed by CentOS ( since they will have a slightly higher E-V-R )." In other words, is there a get out of jail card based on Karanbir's stanza which will return the machine to a consistent state without a fresh install? The results from the bad migration are below the sig. The stanza used was from the SL mailing list, namely: "To be REALLY sure of a full conversion one might try: yum reinstall $(rpm -qa --qf "%{name}.%{arch} %{vendor} \n" | \ grep -i centos | cut -d ' ' -f 1 | sort | uniq | grep -v kernel) Need special handling for kernel and kernel-devel as you will get messages about multiple versions being allowed, and cutting off the limb on which you are standing is not recommended." In short, I pray for the community's thoughts about how to proceed with either going forward, reverting back to Centos 5.5 or even RHEL 5.5 without having to do a fresh install. Basic Permissions Questions

Hi List :) So, I have a folder1, its owner is user1 who has r+w on the folder. User2 is the group owner who only has read access (when I say user2, I mean the group called user2, because when you make a new user the OS can make them their own group). You can see these permissions below: [user2@host test]$ ls -l drw-r----- 3 user1 user2 28 Nov 2 16:17 folder1 How ever user2 can not 'cd' into this directory, and gets the following out put form 'ls -l folder1' [user2@host test]$ ls -l folder1/ total 0 ?--------- ? ? ? ? ? sub-folder And the sub-folder name is written in white text flashing on a red background. So, it seems to me that there is some permissions problems here. The RH approach, imho, is better than a global group, "users", as found on other distros, because there's no real difference between "users" and "world". One easy way to allow shared access - and this will work over Samba - is to create a group for the users, e.g. "accounts" and make the various users members of that group (as a secondary group). Then create a shared directory for them, chown it to be owned by the group (e.g. chown me:accounts /home/accounts) and then set the SGID bit on the directory (chmod 2777 /home/accounts). Now, whenever anybody creates a file in that directory, it will be owned by that user and the shared group "accounts", rather than the primary group of the creator. See the section in that article on "Permissions on directories". I actually haven't tested that approach with SELinux, but I can't see that it would interfere. unable to check in code to svn when files contain spaces or characters

kickstart and grub parameters

Hey list, I recently started working with kickstart. It is awesome! I really had no idea how easy it would be to use. I do have one strange issue, that's really not that important, but that I'd like to figure out. I like to watch all the kernel boot messages go by in text mode by default, and when I've set up a box in the past, I've modified grub's menu.lst file to remove all the GUI components of the boot. But when I try this from a kickstart-installed box, either from a %post section or manually, I still get (mostly) the GUI boot process. Here's my relevant menu.lst exerpts: first, the one working the way I like: #boot=/dev/hda default=0 timeout=5 #splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz #hiddenmenu title CentOS (2.6.18-194.11.4.el5) root (hd0,0) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-194.11.4.el5 ro root=LABEL=/ initrd /initrd-2.6.18-194.11.4.el5.img Then, the one not behaving the way I expect: #boot=/dev/sda default=0 timeout=5 #splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz #hiddenmenu title CentOS (2.6.18-53.el5) root (hd0,0) kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-53.el5 ro root=LABEL=/ initrd /initrd-2.6.18-53.el5.img I'm not sure why they're behaving differently; AFAICT the two are the same modulo the kernel version. mail problems after setting up lynx for https with c_rehash

Hi List, I am not sure it's related but after I ran c_rehash over my ssl certificate directory I am having email delay problems. 1. my thunderbird client now regularly times out and tells me the smtp server is not available - a retry always works - this never occurred before. adding raid1 to running system

I have followed the procedure on the Centos page: http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/CentOS5ConvertToRAID My setup is slightly different. I am using two partitions, / and /home. I have setup swap as a file, /home/swapfile. My hard drives are 500Gig sda and sdb. In modifying the instructions for initializing sdb I have: used /dev/md0 for / (sdb1) used /dev/md1 for /home (sdb2) In section 3.6 The line: mount /dev/RaidSys/Root /mnt/root.new was changed to mount /dev/md0 /mnt/root.new Everything seems to go well until I get to section 4.4.1/4.4.2 Install grub. The commands for installing grub show success but when I edit the /mnt/root.new/boot/grub/menu.lst the contents still point to hd0 not hd1. In section 4.4.4 I am not sure how the following should be changed: umount /mnt/boot.new mount /dev/md0 /mnt/root.new/boot The umount is not needed in my case but should the second line be: mount /dev/md0 /mnt/root.new Other info I have found includes creating a /etc/mdadm.conf. This is not referred to in the instructions. Are the changes I have made correct? Am I missing any other changes? Thanks for any help, David

tar-ing subdirectories separately

I want to backup a directory using tar, but want separate tarballs for each subdirectory. For example: # ls dir1 subdir1 subdir2 subdir3 Will it possible to do it using only tar command? Or will I need another separate piece of logic/control? I thought of writing a shell script with three tar commands for each subdirectory, but that's not elegant way of doing it. Also, it may not scale as number of subdirectories change. Any other solutions or tips for doing this will be really helpful. Thank you jM

Hi all; I have a custom iproute2 table and a few rules to go along with it (CentOS 5) -- I have added the table to /etc/iproute2/rt_tables. if-up and friends doesn't seem to handle this real gracefully. How are those of you out there doing something similar managing this customization? I don't really want to muck with /etc/init.d/network or the if-up scripts to avoid breaking upgrades. rc.local my best bet? Thanks, Ray

putting "/tmp" to memory

"to memory" means: mounting a ~2 GByte filesystem [ tmpfs?, or ramfs? ], and put the "/tmp" on it. [ e.g.: 4 GByte ram in the pc ]. what to write in the "/etc/fstab"? I would like to collect the [ answers too:P ]: Advantages: - Memory is way faster then HDD/SSD, so it could speed things up - "SSD amortization" is less Disadvantages: - Security? curious reboot output

Hello list! I was just curious about the output of a command I typed. [root@LCENT02:~] #last reboot | head -1 reboot system boot 2.6.18-194.26.1. Wed Dec 29 20:03 (24+01:33) This is odd because this machine was rebuilt today (Saturday 1/22) in mid afternoon. Just curious how the output of this command could NOT know this? Also I notice that on select machines the command init 6 does not seem to reboot the machine. I have to type the reboot command in order for this to actually happen. Any troubleshooting tips here? Hi all, Does anyone know how to control a hard drive light from Linux? I'm building a 24bay Linux File server which will run software RAID and I need an easy way for the engineers to see which HDD has gone bad. pen drive, hard disk, cd not being detected

I am working in Centos5.5. Pen drive, hard disk, cd are not being recognised. During booting, "mounting local filesystems [failed]" is displayed among other errors which I am unable to see as the messages proceed fast. Are these messages stored in some file, so that I can check them and report all the errors that are displayed during booting.

Mount Point Ownership & Group

I am facing problems assigning the owner and group to an ext3 filesystem being mounted from an external storage. I created a mount point /vol and changed its owner and group to alpha and beta respectively (as required). The ext3 filesystem (LV from the external storage) was then mounted on /vol using the mount command. However, after mounting the filesystem the owner and group of /vol changed back to root. How do I ensure that the owner and group for this (and other) external filesystem to be mounted dynamically are preserved as required ? The mount options uid and gid don't seem to work for ext3 filesystems. Are there any other options for this purpose? Thanks, Manish

I'm not sure what the problem is here. I asked a simple question. If I did not give enough or gave the the wrong information, a simple message to that end would have been good. I don't have a bunch of letters behind my name. I am almost entirely self taught. I started with Linux in 1995 on an old slackware server a very knowledgeable man built for me and was my remote lifeline for the first couple of years. Since then I have built and ran probably 15 Internet servers ranging from old slackware stuff to Redhat. I just retired my last Redhat 9 server a while ago. I currently have in service Gentoo, Fedora, CentOS and a Cacti Monitoring server that I can't remember the flavor of Linux they built it on. When I get a problem I don't know what to do, I Google or go to one of my many bookmarked sites. Or, I ask someone if all else fails. So, I was designing a Web Site and one of the scripts didn't work. Looking at the error logs and googling the error led me to determine my PHP needed an upgrade and even listed a painless way to do it. However, it didn't work because of a missing dependency. I had not found the answer about to how to fix the dependency problem and, I had joined this list about a week ago. I have been very impressed with the quality of most of the posts so I thought I would ask here. I am not really interested if the version of PHP came bundled with 4.8 or not. It seems it didn't. I probably upgraded it to fix another error I was getting. I thought I had given all the relative information with my first question. Sorry for bothering you. rsync via crontab spawns over 20 processes

Hi all, I've been running rsync via cron for a while now and all is well. However on one particular new 5.5 box, whenever its runs via crontab, the machine ends up with over 20 rsync processes and a load of ~14 and eventually the machine dies. But when running manually, I see it spawn 3 processes with a load of 1.5. My rsync command is simply; rsync --delete -avvH --progress source target Any thoughts? - aurf

cloning a server

Hi, I have a centos 5 (current) mail server that I have compiled dovecot/postfix and installed some packages like mysql etc. These packages have been configured and changed to my liking. How can I now save all this and install it on another server without having to do all the work of compiling installing and configuring the same applications. Is it possible to burn this server image into multiple DVD's make it bootable and then install on another server. Basically I want to clone this server and make it easy to install on another similar hardware server without having to install centos and then manually installing/configuring dovecot/postfix/mysql etc. Not sure if I can create a bootable ISO that will install on new servers or what my options are. I would appreciate any suggestions. Paul

Problem: I am trying to update the php package PHP Version 5.1.6 on CentOS release 4.8 to get rid of a script error: "PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function dom_import_simplexml" while running yum update php I get the following --> Running transaction check --> Processing Dependency: libt1.so.5 for package: php-gd --> Finished Dependency Resolution Error: Missing Dependency: libt1.so.5 is needed by package php-gd I have searched on google and none of the solutions seem to work. But, it is a big issue when a staff member goes on leave, or even just on lunch and switch-off their cellphones and I can't get hold of them to get a password to login to a PC if I need to. The account PC, for that matter is encrypted, with no network access so one needs to be in front if it to access the data. User accounts also doesn't mean much to me. I know how it sounds, but I care more about the data than the user's account. CentOS and Dell MD3200i / MD3220i iSCSI w/ multipath

We've been wrestling with this for ... rather longer than I'd care to admit. Host / initiator systems are a number of real and virtualized CentOS 5.5 boxes. Storage arrays / targets are Dell MD3220i storage arrays. CentOS is not a Dell-supported configuration, and we've had little helpful advice from Dell. There's been some amount of FUD in that Dell don't seem to know what Dell's own software installation (the md3 Dell doesn't seem to have much OS experience generally. Their docs are pretty inconsistent. I've noted omissions, terminology differences, and procedural differences among the "Owner's Manual", "Deployment Guide", a professional services "Remote Services Installation Agreement" service description. Some of the multipathing guidance we've had comes from their EqualLogic line of storage servers. Questions: 1: Is there anyone out there running this configuration and are you satisfied with it? 2: We get a set of error messages on the initator at target login. These appear to be benign, and web research suggests it's the result of a driver configuration issue in trying to send instructions to a http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.linux.iscsi.open-iscsi/5970 http://bit.ly/gguLl7 MD3000i boxes have 1 controller that can execute IO and one that cannot execute READ/WRITE IO until a special command is sent. In older kernels, layers like the partition scanning and udev and hal would send down IO to those disabled paths and we would see IO errors like in your link. In newer kernels we have device handler modules (for MD3000i you would want scsi_dh_rdac (so do "modprobe scsi_dh_rdac" and then lsmod to see if it is there)) that will detect if the path is not active and if so it will either not send the IO or it will not print a error message since we expect the IO to fail. We'd prefer *not* seeing spurious I/O errors that we don't have to sift through looking for real storage issues. 3: The MD32xxi series is a dual-controller array with multiple ports on each controller. Multiple targets can be logged into from an initiator, with the pathways aggregated by the Linux multipath (device-mapper-multipath) system. There's very little clear documentation on multipath. In particular, any way to trigger alerting from multipath events / failures, or iscsi session actions, would be helpful. The MD32xxi series only supports reporting from a GUI management utility (MDSM) which would be at best problematic to run in a server environment. The other question is: is multipathing typical of iSCSI configuation? Little of the iSCSI docs I've found discusses multipath configurations at all: http://www.open-iscsi.org/ http://www.cuddletech.com/articles/iscsi/index.html (good but very dated) http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/rhel-centos-fedora-linux-iscsi-howto.html (no mention of multipathing) 4: Dell suggests a shutdown procedure including a flush of multipathing paths ("multipath -F" -- in the "Owner's Manual"): 3 Flush the Device Mapper multipath maps list to remove any old or modified mappings # multipath F Presumably this would go into one of the init scripts -- perhaps the /etc/init.d/multipath script, as part of the "stop" sequence (after the multipath daemon is killed). Anyone done this or know why the practice is recommended? Based on our experience with Dell I would NOT recommend this configuration for others. But we're stuck with it, and any help in getting things configured would be very helpful and gratefully received.
