I'm trying to update a workstation, and it wants to update mpeg2-utils. But that has a dependency of libmpeg2-0.5.1-3, for i386. epel doesn't have it, and I tried looking on rpmfusion.org, and I can only find a very few packages there. Anyone have an idea which of the regular repositories carries libmpeg2? mark

oprofile problem in centos with custom kernel

Hi! I am trying to profile my custom 2.6.37 linux kernel with oprofile in centos 5.5, and i have encountered the following problem. (Before everyone starts shouting, I know that custom kernels are not supported by centos team, however I really need to run a modified version, due to a project concerning my MSc thesis. So i hope for your understanding :-) . I have build the kernel with the following flags: CONFIG_DEBUG_KERNEL=y CONFIG_OPROFILE=y # CONFIG_OPROFILE_EVENT_MULTIPLEX is not set CONFIG_HAVE_OPROFILE=y CONFIG_FRAME_POINTER=y CONFIG_KPROBES=y CONFIG_HAVE_KPROBES=y CONFIG_KPROBE_EVENT=y CONFIG_SAMPLE_KPROBES=m under various suggestions i have googled in the net. Hi All I am investigating an Apache change I was told about that involved adding apache22_http_accept_enable="YES" to /etc/rc.conf, but I don't think this exists on CentOS 5. Can anyone help me decide where to make this change? -Jason

problems with OpenVPN 2.1.4 on Centos 5.5

Hello listmates, I've got this Centos 5.5 box which I am trying to configure as an OpenVPN server. Now 2.1.4 seems to have added pkcs11 support and that stops me from creating the CA and other necessary files: [root@gw5fl 2.0]# . ./vars bash: /usr/share/doc/openvpn-2.1.4/easy-rsa/2.0/whichopensslcnf: Permission denied NOTE: If you run ./clean-all, I will be doing a rm -rf on /usr/share/doc/openvpn-2.1.4/easy-rsa/2.0/keys [root@gw5fl 2.0]# ./clean-all [root@gw5fl 2.0]# ./build-ca Please edit the vars script to reflect your configuration, then source it with "source ./vars". Next, to start with a fresh PKI configuration and to delete any previous certificates and keys, run "./clean-all". Finally, you can run this tool (pkitool) to build certificates/keys. [root@gw5fl 2.0]# Now, the tool I seem to need (from the "vars" file): export PKCS11TOOL="pkcs11-tool" does not seem to be there and I am not sure how to install it as I couldn't find it. xfs_quota - space differs between du -h vs report -h

Hi all, I'm having fun getting to know xfs_quotas. I do notice some irregularities. When running xfs_quota -s -c /dev/sdc1 And then running report -h, for user barney, his used space is 4.9G while his soft/hard limit is 5G. Since I set 5, all is well, but when I run du -hs on barnies dir, it shows only 4G used. I can adjust for the diff so that my quotas can be set to 6G when I really mean 5G, that is if its a linear diff vs a algo diff. However I was hoping you all could shed some light on this. - aurf

I've worked for a variety of companies over a period of over twenty years, and similar policies were in effect in each one. At one company where I worked, possesion of another person's password was immediate dismissal grounds, though not automatic. Any company which doesn't exercise "due diligence" to protect its trade secrets will lose when trying to recover from an industrial espionage incident. I know from personal experience, since I was at a company which went after another for theft of IP, and nearly wound up having to testify in court. A friend of mine did have to. All employees were required to attend a seminar presented by the full time legal staff, explaining what IP is, and how it is protected. One thing we were told very forcefully was that we were to have good passwords (and what that meant), and that we were never to divulge our passwords to anyone else. IANAL, but I suggest that anyone who has any intellectual property (patents, trade secrets, trade marks) get a lawyer to explain what they are, what the differences are, and how to protect them. They need different kinds of protection, and trade secrets, especially, are hard to protect without good, secret passwords. CentOS 5.4 LTTng patch

Hi all, Has anyone successfully applied the LTTng patch to CentOS 5.4 kernel? According to the LTTng compatibility table patch28-2.6.18-lttng-0.6.41 is the one that should be used but a number of the patch files did not apply cleanly. It generated a number of rejects. No, you can make that work for all users with gconf-editor by editing the right file. My previously suggested solution just does that in one go without a gui: gconftool-2 --direct \ --config-source xml:readwrite:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory --type bool \ --set /apps/gnome-screensaver/lock_enabled false That makes it mandatory, so it can't be overridden, and will affect all users. Only fixes it for gnome, I don't know what the equivalent fix is for KDE. You need to take other steps to enforce it in the other direction, as killall gnome-screensaver would defeat it. jh

not able to check in all code into svn which creates problem in deployment

Hi; how to convert 7 cd iso images into one dvd image? I am unable to use bittorrent :-( Home ISP blocking bittorrent; company now blocks bittorrent. I want/need an old release (CentOS 5.2) to install as a VirtualBox guest. I suppose I could install from the cd iso images, but it is a pain to virtually eject and remount cd iso images during the install :-( So, is there a technique or an open source tool that will create a dvd iso given the cd iso images? Or how does one generate the dvd iso given a list of rpm files? (Assuming I had a list of all of the needed rpm files). Another important thing I have is that like you are suggesting for Fedora or Ubuntu but that the newest cutting edge technology could be installed in the older hardware assuming that the hardware has minimal composition, like, only 2 gb ram, hard disk and speaker, with keyboard and a non-usb mouse. Hi all, is any one aware quotas not working in 5,5? I'm using XFS as a file system. My fstab has the appropriate usrquota,grpquota but when I try to run; quotacheck -cug /foo I get; quotacheck: Can't find filesystem to check or filesystem not mounted with quota option. I already have a large amount of data in the mount. Do quotas get implemented on only empty filesystems and then one adds data? - aurf

Hi, I have downloaded the following version: CentOS-5.5-i386-LiveCD-Release2.iso from the mirror: http://ftp.iitm.ac.in/centos/5.5/isos/i386/ What I want to ask is that 'Release2' is the complete OS and after installation we can use 'yum update'. KVM host question about host firewall

Hello All: I'll ask this in the virt list later if this is not the appropriate forum... Yesterday I was troubleshooting an issue with a KVM host. I was unable to access the DNS service on a KVM virtual machine. After verifying that the vm allowed through the DNS ports (53 on UDP/TCP) and still being unable to access, I was able to connect immediately after allowing those ports on the KVM host. Is there anyway around this? The reason is that I would like to allow only SSH access to the host, but allow other services to the virtual machines. I am running CentOS 5.5 on both hosts and vm. Dear Parshwa, I tend to agree with you in some of your points. I migrated my systems from ubuntu to centos and I could not be more happy. off course I have been force to learn the new places where things are "the redhat way" but not problem since the usual tools continue to exist in both platforms. I have decided to run Centos in all my machines thus far, I do have some applications that only run in Windows, in those cases I keep a Virtualbox instance to use those particular applications when needed otherwise I try keeping everything in Centos as native. Do not get me wrong, centos is an "IT" operating system but it could equally be a tool of choice for "non-IT" individuals as long as they are willing to search, read, and ask questions when all else fails. Hi jason, Thank you for pointing this out. I am running 5.5 in 5 new boxes suddenly the boxes would start randomly rebooting. Checking the logs point out to smartd in all the boxes. I should all of them out except one. In that one I disable and shutdown smartd and the machine has been running ok for 5 hours, could smartd causing init 6 calls, if so, why isn't syslogd catching those calls. All that pointed to smartd was the last call before reboot. I will report back in the thread when the 24 hour mark ticks. When I took over administrating things and set up the new incarnation of 'thin clients', I installed CentOS and with proper maintaince things run much more smoothly. The 'desktop' systems are used by patrons and library staff people alike (not techy geeks!). Things are stable and reliable. hello, I am absolutely new, means from non-IT sector but have attraction (developed recently) towards linux and have chosen the centos distro for the installation as an OS in my home PC for personal use. I went to the page: http://isoredirect.centos.org/centos/5/isos/i386/ But don't understand amongst the variety of options there. I also don't know the technical terms like md5, etc...., can one directly give me the link for down loadable Cent OS 5.5 (which is latest) and better if it is the torrent download. Even a minimal install with nobase installs about 40-50 i386 packages on a 64bit-System. I know this has come up before and thought it might be an FAQ, but I can't find it on the wiki. replace x86 with x64 system and reuse existing LVM

I want to replace an existing 32bit with a 64bit installation (Centos 5). There's an existing LVM with lots of partitions. Most are used for Xen guests. The system itself uses only one of them plus a separate /boot partition that is not on LVM. What's the best course of action here? Should I do the reinstall with kickstart or better manually and reuse the existing filesystem? As I understand once LVM gets loaded it should find the volumes by itself, but will it be able to use the same naming scheme for instance? Or do I have to do some additional stuff, anyway? I have an HP Photosmart 3210 All-in-One color printer. Printing works great, but I cannot get xsane to locate it on the local subnet. I've been to the sane site and looked at the backends. The HP 3210 is supported by hpio and there is a note that hpio is no longer needed because the functionality has been rolled int hplip. yum shows hplip is installed: hplip.x86_64 1.6.7-4.1.el5.4 installed Everything is on an internal nat address space. Host is at .1, Photosmart is at .251 /etc/services contains an entry for sane-port xinet.d/ has a file for sane and sane-port (both identical) iptables allows all outbound and established. I've gone through several sets of guidance found on the Intenet. Almost all is for usb or scsi. Very little guidance on sane-net. Finally found one good set of guidance and followed it to configure dll.conf, and net.conf. I've looked at sane.net man page untill I'm cross-eyed. Anyone successfully scanning from an HP Photosmart network printer? Dave M

I installed TrueCrypt and when I ran it, it informed me that I needed a new kernel. So I ran "yum update". I boot to level 3, and when I ran startx, I got: -- ... I'm just trying to move a lot of regular disk I/O from my main drive with the root installtion on it, to a replaceable spare. I cannot find which log file these messages are going to. nic bonding

I've just setup nic bonding on our server (DL585-G7 running Centos 5.5 x86_64) as detailed on the wiki: http://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/BondingInterfaces and all seems fine but from other "howto's" I've seen on the web, they're should be a /proc/net/bond0/info As far as I can see, I don't have one and I'm not sure if it should be there or its absence is a sign I've done something wrong. I found /proc/net/dev_snmp6/bond0 but is the same? Any ideas? They are running Centos 5.5 and for the last three days they have been rebooting unexpectedly, can you point me in the right direction what to look for in the logs. keychain problem

hello centos.. I am having a very annoying problem on my network right now. it looks like every time I try to add my ssh key to keychain I have to issue a command just to get my ssh subsystem communicating with the ssh-agent: I have this line in my .bashrc file $(keychain --eval --quick --quiet private_key1 private_key2 private_key3) If I try to perform ssh-add I get the message: [bluethundr@VIRTCENT01:~]#ssh-add Could not open a connection to your authentication agent. So then I try to execute ssh-agent: bluethundr@amanda:~]#exec ssh-agent bash * Warning: can't find private_key1; skipping * Warning: can't find private_key2; skipping * Warning: can't find private_key3; skipping bash: SSH_AUTH_SOCK=/tmp/ssh-cdJlgq6077/agent.6077;: No such file or directory Then I can add it. [bluethundr@amanda:~]#ssh-add Enter passphrase for /home/bluethundr/.ssh/id_rsa: Identity added: /home/bluethundr/.ssh/id_rsa (/home/bluethundr/.ssh/id_rsa) But if I ssh away from this box and then ssh back INTO it.. and then sometime later have to ssh away again it asks me for my ssh key's passphrase. Cat the CD ISOs together (order doesn't matter) into a single big file with the same name as the corresponding DVD (same version and arch), then run rsync on it to convert into the actual DVD (using a mirror that has both rsync and the desired DVD). The same trick works in reverse: for each CD, make a copy of the DVD with the same name as the CD, then run rsync on it to convert it into the actual CD. In either direction, the download necessary shouldn't be more than a few percent of full size.

Installation question

Hi, I am new in the world of CentOS and Linux. I am not a computer professional but want to do work in Linux, for which I am trying to learn the Linux basics. Having a PC at home and somebody told me CentOS is a great Linux distro for stability. I am having some basic queries which are as follows: 1. I am having the PC and already installed is Fedora Core 11 as well as Windows XP (dual boot). Fedora has unstability because of its EOL. If I want to install the Cent OS for home PC (personal), should the installation CD (after getting it burned) would prompt me to replace the existing Linux (i.e. Fedora) or would it try to install into the whole of the memory? My requirement is to only replace the existing Fedora Core 11 but to make the Windows remain intact. 2. Though I am new in Linux, and even Fedora commands I don't know much but majority of the commands in Cent OS and Fedora are same? 3. What Cent OS should I download and install? I mean for a single PC at home, can I install the server CentOS or simple CentOS? I hope that Cent OS would be good to use at home. -- Regards, Parshwa Murdia

I always mount the hard disk in read write by the command "ntfs-3g /dev/sda1 /media/harddisk umask=0". cut, copy, paste works fine when I perform these operations by mouse.

Hi Folks, I've fresh installed CentOS 5.5 and realized, that Samba is in version 3.0.33-3. Is it possible to conect WIN7 in a Samba-Domäne with this version? And I've read abaut RHEL 5.6 with samba 3.5.4. Can I expect, that this version is included in CentOS 5.6? And can I get this version with yum-update? Thx Timothy

CentOS 5.5/5.6 on Sandy Bridge

Hi list Has anyone tried to install CentOS 5.5 on a system with one of the new Sandy Bridge processors with integrated GPU? I can live with bad X11 performance - I'm happy as long as I get a X11 desktop (with VESA or whatever) with no crashes :) I'll mostly use this system as a KVM host with a VNC server, but I'll like to be able to hook a screen to it. CentOS 5.6/6.0 will undoubtly improve the situation in case there're issues with 5.5, I'm just curious if it will work atm. with the current CentOS 5.5 + a default Gnome environment. Thanks, Kenni

hey every one i got the centos 5.5 and the following problem occuered: 1- the video display doesnot probe my card right. 2- the wireless card doesnot installed . my laptop is dell studio1569: ( display card is intel hd arrandle , the wireless card is intel advanced centrino n6200 series ) but the fedora 14 did it will with both also the ubuntu?

When I give the command "cp file1 file2" then the error comes: cp: cannot create regular file `file2': Input/output error This occurs sometimes and it occurs when I am giving the command inside a external hard disk which is mounted by "ntfs-3g" manually. Why does this error come?

Hello, Running httpd-2.2.3-43.el5.centos.3 on CentOS release 5.5 (Final), I have : $ ps -Ze LABEL PID TTY TIME CMD user_u:system_r:httpd_t 12833 ? 00:00:00 httpd Is it normal for httpd to have this context (user_u:system_r:httpd_t) ? I was expecting system_u:system_r:httpd_t. And if it is not normal, is it because I have restarted httpd by hand (service httpd restart), or because I have broken something in my configuration ? Is it the ITE IT8212 ATA RAID Controller ? I would suspect that raid card - the few I've tried didn't work well even with the manufacturer's supplied windows drivers. The linux drivers might not be any better. I'm not sure why you distrust DMA, or if it's just on this one card that you have problems with it. ATA is being phased out now, it became a very mature and reliable technology its it final years. Motherboards with onboard ATA66/100/133 ports became extremely reliable. As long as you used the 80 wire cables. Unfortunately, a good controller is hard to find. I used to like Promise as a windows controller. They were very reliable if you had the lastest firmware and drivers. But I don't know if they work well in linux, or even how well their current models work. (been a while since I've used one)

I have a 750Gb 3-member software raid1 where 2 partitions are always present and the third is regularly rotated and re-synced (SATA disks in hot-swap bays). The timing of the resync seems to be extremely variable recently, taking anywhere from 3 to 10 hours even if the partition is unmounted and the drives aren't doing anything else and regardless of what I echo into /proc/sys/dev/raid/speed_limit_min or _max. Is there a command that marks the screen as "dirty" and hopefully redraws it? If I do a control ALT F1 and the F7 this in effect redraws the screen. I am getting video artifacts that I think is in the nvidia driver. the switching console works - I was just hoping there is a more convenient way. some command or something. Thanks, Jerry

IPv6, HE tunnel and ip6tables problems

CentOS 5.5, fully patched. I have a HE tunnel (tunnelbroker.net) IPv6 tunnel. This works pretty well and is simple to setup. Everything works fine. This webpage tells me that you can set the thumbnail cache size using gconf-editor: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1481182 However, the gconf-editor that I have on Centos 5.5 doesn't have that setting. RAID configuration suggestion???

we have several DELL R900 with PERC 6/E adapter in it. R900 using Redhat Linux. Each R900 have two PERC 6/E adapter and at least two MD1000 connect to it. Configuration 1: PERC 6/E -- two MD1000 PERC 6/E -- empty Configuration 2: PERC 6/E -- MD1000 PERC 6/E -- MD1000 Normally first MD1000 for database and second MD1000 for nightly backup. My co-worker told me there is NO difference on performance or battery life on botn configurations. I would like listen to your opinion on follwoing: 1. which configuration have better performance? 2. put two MD1000 on same PERC 6/E adapter will cause battery life shorter? 3. other comment? I have a Dell server with four bonded, gigabit interfaces. Bonding mode is 802.3ad, xmit_hash_policy=layer3+4. When testing this setup with iperf, I never get more than a total of about 3Gbps throughput. Is there anything to tweak to get better throughput? Or am I running into other limits (e.g. was reading about tcp retransmit limits for mode 0). Hello again, Been an interesting day. I'm attempting to use parted to create a partition on a 28TB volume which consists of 16x2TB drives configuired in a Raid 5 + spare, so total unformatted size is 28TB to the OS.. However upon entering parted, and making a gpt label, print reports back as follows; Model: Areca ARC-1680-VOL#000 (scsi) Disk /dev/sdc: 2199GB Sector Size (logical/physical): 512B/512B Partition Table: gpt Why is the disk reporting ~2TB? Should I be using another partitioning tool for such a large volume? - aurf

I am trying to plug a USB 2 device in a USB 3 slot. Nothing is being detected in "lsusb". Is there something special I need to do? I am running centos 5.5 x86_64. I thought 3.0 was backward compatible. Nothing special about my device its an RS232 to USB device. It works in 2.0 slot. Thanks, Jerry

Hi guys, I've been working on a yum repo for PHP 5.2 and today I wanted to update it[1], however on a test machine using my PHP packages (e.g. php-common-5.2.16-1nux) a yum update to the new RPMs with version 5.2.17 gives the following error: "Error: Package tuple ('php-common', 'i386', '0', '5.2.17', '1nux') could not be found in packagesack". Any rpm guru around has an idea of what is causing this? Hi List, just doing my weekly yum update and noticed that the kernel is designated .i686 but the headers package is .i386?? surely the headers should match the kernel geometry that it was compiled for? confused. TIA Rob

I now have fonts! I added the font directories found by /usr/sbin/chkfontpath to the Files Section of the /etc/X11/xorg.conf and following a restart things began to work. The system startup script for xfs makes reference to a /tmp/.font-unix directory. An error message appears on the boot details screen to the effect that lstat reports /tmp/.font-unix does not exist but I can find no reference to this error in any of the logs. After startup I can find that directory but it is empty. I have no idea how this is supposed to work but I suspect that the dynamic discovery and addition of the font directories is failing for some reason. -- *** E-Mail is NOT a SECURE channel *** James B. It really does seem to come down to the fact that xfs is not finding the fonts and that therefore only the default fonts are left available to XTerm. I have tried configuring the FontPath argument in xorg.conf but all that manages to do is to stop the xserver from starting at all. I looked into the rc script and to me it is a nightmare. To begin with, instead of just configuring the font directories the startup script runs a font locater utility /usr/sbin/chkfontpath. Set font and size in xterm

I have a situation where gnome console does not handle vt102 escape sequences properly and therefor need to employ xterm instead. When I run xterm from a gnome terminal window I am presented with an extremely small terminal window employing an almost unreadably small font. I have attempted to set the font size using xrdb and a custom .Xresources file. I can change the colour scheme. I can create a scrollbar. I can move the scrollbar to either the right or left window margin. What I cannot do is to change the font size. When I do xfontsel I get this error: Warning: Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion and I see only four fonts listed in the application window, all of them small and none with a point size of greater than 12.0.! If I do fc-cache -f -v I see 14+ font directories containing more than 100 fonts # fc-cache -f -v /usr/share/fonts: caching, 0 fonts, 7 dirs /usr/share/fonts/bitmap-fonts: caching, 31 fonts, 0 dirs /usr/share/fonts/bitstream-vera: caching, 10 fonts, 0 dirs . . . fc-cache: succeeded but I also see lots of this: /var/cache/fontconfig: invalid cache file: f93b699072f38b46be29013fc93f1bbe-x86.cache-2 /var/cache/fontconfig: invalid cache file: 7ddba6133ef499da58de5e8c586d3b75-x86.cache-2 I really need some help sorting this out. Terminal with variable sized font

Using gnome-terminal and the like, you can set the font size that you want and then if you drag the window larger or smaller, you get more or less character per line. Is there a terminal that allows you to set the rows and columns that you want and then resizes the text instead? gnome-terminal has a zoom-in and zoom-out function that's close to what I want but it's not "infinite" and works by repeatedly hitting hotkeys, not by changing the window size. Greetings, Apologies for Off thread (and possibly stupid) question: Where on the net one can find the RHEV-M general list like this one for centos <rant> I have been tearing my hair for past week to make RHEV work with two boxens. One RHEV H and one running XP with two VMs uner VMware WS. One VM is openfiler for iscsi storage and another VM w2k3 for RHEVM. Search in foogle for the error "Network conenction error 5022" does not allow creation of the storage domain with couple of iscsi storage (openfiler) targets. I troubled google uncle for answers but perhaps is angry with me. sigh. And I know only *ONE* list which knows all the correct answers: centos [at] centos.org </rant> Thanks for any pointers.
