Hello, I'm trying to use helper variables like %{rhel} in a .SPEC file on CentOS (as they are defined in RHEL and Fedora [1]), but it seems they are not available. Is there any way to detect automatically CentOS release from a .SPEC file in a RPM build process? As a workaround, I use this hack: %if 0%{?rhel} >= 5 (..) %endif And when calling rpmbuild I use a conditional build, like: $ rpmbuild -ba --clean --define "rhel 5" Regards, [1] http://goo.gl/dkGUg -- Santi Saez

Centos installation Vs Disk partitioning

Dear all, I'm trying to setup a development server which hosts a number of virtual hosts.and i need your advice with the following: 1. What's the best Filesystem to be used with an apache server?Relevant info: i. Mysql DB size' 1 GBii. Code directory size' 8 GB (Max file size is 5 KB)2. What's the best file structure to maximize seek time from drives?Relevant info:i. 2 X 1 TB SATAII 64MB blk Edition Int HDDii. 1 X 320GB General info: I have an additional directory which hosts all my code under /Development . this directory has a size of almost 300 GB.14 Virtual Hosts would be created on the server under /etc/httpd/VHosts/ I was thinking of the following structure: Drive A (320 GB): OS Drive B (1 TB): Mysql + /homeDrive C (1 TB): /development + /opt Would this work? i followed no guidelines with the above setup, it's just using my own logic. so i'd appreciate an expert advice with this. Hi all, Our intranet's WAN interface just stopped working yesterday, and I can't figure it out. Removing, and re-adding the eth0 interface with system-config-network doesn't actually re-create the NIC either. So, how do I re-create it? Google search didn't reveal much, other that using the r8169 module, which is already loaded. 389 Directory Server & CentOS

Hello Everyone, I was wondering if anyone out there has successfully implemented 389 as a replacement or to support to a windows AD environment. I'm just starting to toy around with it in a few vm's and trying to get a feel for integrating the two together. So far I have the 389 up now I'm just working on connecting a dummy user to authenticate with it along with populating and talking with a dummy AD server. Any insights/suggestions/opinions/recommendations would be appreciated, especially before I get waste deep. Regards, Edgar Valdes

Could not setup Speed and Duplex on CentOS 5.5

Greetings, I recently installed CentOS 5 on Dell PE 1750 server. I have noticed that the speed and duplex settings are 100 Half Duplex. I tried to change the duplex settings to full, but no success. I got the error message "Cannot get current device settings: Operation not supported". Does anyone else experience this issue?. Below is the error message and some more details about my box. Q about dpi, fonts, gnome, Xorg etc

This has been puzzling me for some time and despite bothering Auntie Google rather a lot, I've yet to find a satisfying answer. As an old-time (since 1981) unix and X guy, I've generally been fairly well-able to get fonts to behave in a rational manner. My needs are pretty simple - I just want 8-point (or 9-point etc) fonts to appear on the screen as 8-point font - ie more or less 8 * 1/72 inches = 2.82mm high. More or less, I'm not insisting it be exact, but at least not 1mm or 5mm high. In the (glorious) past I was able to look at xdpyinfo |egrep 'dimension| resolution' and check that Xorg was giving something reasonable.. eg dimensions: 1600x1200 pixels (423x317 millimeters) resolution: 96x96 dots per inch So far so good. With this new fangled gnome and fontconfig stuff, you also need to set up some X-resources with: xrdb -query |grep Xft Xft.antialias: 1 Xft.dpi: 96 Xft.hinting: 1 Xft.hintstyle: hintfull Xft.rgba: none ... and to inform gnome-settings-daemon with gnome-appearance-properties->Font->Details->dpi which is the same as: gconftool-2 -s --type float /desktop/gnome/font_rendering/dpi 96 It's that last step that bothers me - it's not "per display", so if I log in using a different X-server eg using VNC, I might well have a completely different dpi. For example, my home monitor is a good-old CRT with 152 dpi. I use 144 dpi as a multiple of 12 but if I log in through vnc without changing /desktop/gnome/font_rendering/dpi, the fonts are just wrong, wrong, wrong. If I then fix things up in that VNC session, when I come back to the physical monitor at 96 dpi, things are again wrong, until I fix it up again. But then the VNC session(s) are wrong. My question is this - surely there's a way to tell gconf/gnome that my dpi setting is for DISPLAY X. Please tell me it's not just a global setting for all displays!! I agree... LVM command line is the way to go in this case, it offers more flexibility than having to configure stuff with the actual GUI. When seagate hard disk mounts on my laptop, nothing can be "cut" from the hard disk to the laptop. Nothing can be "cut" or "copied" from the laptop to the hard disk. Also I am not able to change permissions of files on the hard disk. What can I do to resolve the problem?

I have a executable and when i run it then the error comes: /lib64/libc.so.6: version 'GLIBC_2.7' not found I don't have the source code of the executable. And I can't find glibc 2.7 for centos 5.5.

how to graph iozone output using OpenOffice?

Hi all, Can anyone please steer me in the right direction with this one? I've searched the net, but couldn't find a clear answer. How do I actually generate graphs from iozone, using OpenOffice? Every website I've been to simply mentions that iozone can output an xls file which can be used in MS Excel to generate a 3D graph. But, I can't see how it's actually done. Can anyone please help me with this? I've run the following command on a CentOS 5.4 server: iozone -R -l 5 -u 5 -r 1m -s 100m -F /home/f1 /home/f2 /home/f3 /home/f4 /home/f5 | tee -a /tmp/iozone_results.txt & And then imported the iozone_results.tx file into OpenOffice Calc, but got no idea where to from here? Corrupted RPM DB can't be rebuilt.

Alle, I have a major problem. I'm running CentOS 5.5 on some rather old hardware (Dual Celeron 500MHz with 768MB of memory). Sometime in the last week, the DB became corrupted (I noticed when yum update would hang). I've tried running rpm --rebuild with both the 2.6.18-194.17.4 and 2.6.18-194.26.1 kernels and get a segmentation fault each time. Consequently, I'm pretty much stuck and cannot do any update. Also, the machine has a tendency to hang any time operations are done. I've disabled some of the cronjobs that do this, but this is no way to operate. Good morning/day and Happy New Year. We have a geographically distributed environment (marketing speak: cloud) where we regularly need to migrate individual systems to new hardware (for bigger disks or for better geographical placement, for example). We currently use Cobbler to do our base installs automatically and I am now looking at integrating Clonezilla with Cobbler. The goal is take an *individual* system that has been customized and migrate it in an automated fashion. We currently do this using Cobbler and then running rsync and mysqldump in a script along with other system -> userland module configurations (such as PHP modules) but the process is tedious and generally a PITA. We also must have the ability to run this across different datacenters on different continents. Any pointers to good automated solutions? Having to wade through a fully quoted mail to find a one or two line reply followed by one or more quoted footers is just a waste of time, bandwidth, disk space and cpu cycles. This might not be a problem if only one or two of the posters here would be lazy with regard to stripping replies, but there's quite a few of those here and if you receive hundreds of mails a day it all adds up. In Centos 5.5, I've had this same experience over and over. I have no trouble installing CGI programs the old fashioned way (untar into /var/www/html and configure), but don't like un-rpm managed files floating about. So I can install, for example, phpMyAdmin, from EPEL. That phpMyAdmin RPM drops files into a bunch of locations, the php files are under /usr/share/phpMysql and then there are also: /etc/httpd/conf.d/phpMyAdmin.conf /etc/phpMyAdmin /etc/phpMyAdmin/config.inc.php and this: /var/lib/phpMyAdmin /var/lib/phpMyAdmin/config /var/lib/phpMyAdmin/save /var/lib/phpMyAdmin/upload In order to make this actually work on the web server, I copy the directory /usr/share/phpMyAdmin into /var/www/html and then I edit the /etc/httpd/conf.d/phpMyAdmin.conf. Then it works. Then a new version of the phpMyAdmin RPM is released on EPEL, it gets installed, and I have no idea what I'm supposed to do to keep my thing in /var/www/html working. I had the exact same experience with the mediawiki RPM from EPEL. It installs its files into /var/www/ var/www/mediawiki116 and /usr/share/mediawiki116 The web server required everything to b e under /var/www/html/, so I copy files in there. The mediawiki116 documentation does not mention this problem, but I've googled long enough until I found this, which agrees with me that it is necessary to copy the files over in order to use the media wiki. http://www.wikihow.com/Install-MediaWiki-on-Fedora Unfortunately, now the upgrade path is obscured. Problem with SSHD update.

This morning I applied the 13 or so new updates to my servers. On one of them the ssh service and clients stopped working immediately after the update. I restarted the server in anticipation that there might be some instability introduced by updating on a system with active ssh connections. However, this has not cleared the problem. The packages in question are: openssh.i386 0:4.3p2-41.el5_5.1 openssh-askpass.i386 0:4.3p2-41.el5_5.1 openssh-clients.i386 0:4.3p2-41.el5_5.1 openssh-server.i386 0:4.3p2-41.el5_5.1 The error I am getting when attempting to start the sshd service is this: Starting sshd: Auto configuration failed 6486:error:0E065068:configuration file routines:STR_COPY:variable has no value:conf_def.c:629:line 207 [FAILED] Can anyone reading this inform me as to what this means, what the likely cause is, and how it may be repaired? I have webmin access to the server and, as it is inside our firewall I can probably enable telnet to get a terminal window do carry out modifications. But I need to know what it is that I need to modify. Alternatively, can anyone point me to a reference regarding removing the current version of openssh and reverting to the prior version, which worked with presumably the same user configuration that the present version does not accept. The only references that I can find respecting this error message are all several years old and some of them suggest that their is a problem with accessing or using /dev/random or /dev/urandom. This matter is somewhat urgent. I have temporarily routed essential ssh connections through a spare host but the box affected sits in front of our legacy systems providing secure access to them as their native OSs and telecom protocols do not support encryption. I have Centos 5.2 and am trying to set up my first tape loader, a Quantum SuperLoader 3. Or do I really need to recompile kernel, enable max_lums in modprobe.conf, etc? Configuring printers in CentOS 5

Could someone please explain to me how to best configure printers in CentOS 5? I've been trying to configure a new printer, which is served by a Mac Mini: If I open a web browser at localhost:631, or "system-configure-printers" and I configure the new printer as an IPP printer, it winds up in a list of "Remote printers", and once it winds up there I can't seem to delete the printer or change the settings at all. If I try using the system-config-printers interface, it's all greyed out; if I try using CUPS, it actually tries to connect to CUPS on the Mini! In order to delete it, I have to manually revert the /etc/cups files and restart the cups printing system in system-config-services. I just don't understand printer configuration on Linux. SELinux - way of the future or good idea but !!!

Hi, total newbie on CentOS. Just firing up an install of 5.5 on a development webserver. Installed Webmin, Awstats, PHPMyAdmin and Drupal successfully. Yet to work on Sendmail and Samba. SELinux in enforcing mode, reporting "SELinux preventing ifconfig (ifconfig_t) "read write" to /var/webminsessiondb.pag (var_t)". Googled the error message without real success in finding fix - bug reports showing. Question is whether worth pursuing as SELinux is the way of the future. Or is SELinux a good idea that never really made it's way into the sun. Thoughts please. Alison PS. Semi-retired. Cut my teeth as sys prog on RSX11-M systems eons ago.

centos 5.5 install + intel raid

Hi all, Installing 5.5 on a fresh system having an Intel RAID. My 2 drives are configured as a mirror within the Intel BIOS. When starting my install, Anaconda throws an exception. After a brief goog, I see one possible fix is - at the install prompt, type; linux text nodmraid This is fine and all but Centos sees 2 disks at this point rather then 1 which is what I thought the Intel RAID controller would present to the OS. I am pretty much tarded when it comes to installs as I usually boot of a DVD, enter some choices based on requirements and off I go. I once compiled a network driver into the initrd and remade my boot disk but that seems beyond me now. Any help is greatly appreciated. - aurf

Hi, When I make DVDs of Centos and any others for that matter, I take the following steps: 1. Find an official torrent if possible. (Centos has torrents for the DVD. Unfortunately no Jigdo so far as I know.) 1.1 Torrents come with checksums and the torrent app I use will check the downloaded file against the checksums. Otherwise find a stable mirror close to where you are for better speed. 1.2 If you cant get a torrent find out if the distro vendors offer any other options. IE: Jigdo, zsync etc. etc. I usually try for one of these before going for a strait FTP download. FTP downloads often fail and are not always recoverable in the event of an interruption. Jigdo is my favourite as each and every package and file is downloaded and verified and then the DVD image (.iso) made up from all the packages. It is basically a self checking system and has proven to be very reliable. 2. Once the file is downloaded do a binary checksum using the official checksums found on the vendors homepage or mirror you downloaded from. Information on how to call sha512sum or any checksum tool to make it do a binary level checksum can be found in the man pages. (sha512sum -b filename.iso) I always go for the largest checksum algorithm provided. IE: SHA512SUM if available otherwise SHA256SUM, SHA1SUM or as a last resort MD5SUM. If this passes proceed to step 3. 3. Burning the DVD. This step is the trickiest part to get right. 3.1. Find **reliable** media. Always choose DVD-R. Go with a named brand. I usually go for spindles of 50 or less. I have found that the 100 unit spindles get a bit heavy on the ones at the bottom and I am unsure of the effect shipping and handling has on them. 3.2. Use the following wodim command: "/usr/bin/wodim dev=/dev/sr0 driveropts=burnfree fs=14M speed=4 -dao ${ISO_FILENAME}" where /dev/sr0 is your DVD device and ${ISO_FILENAME} is your iso you are trying to burn. to burn the DVD at the slowest possible speed your DVD burner will go for. Use DISK AT ONCE (dao) to write the whole file in one go. Wodim will close the disk session after burning. I know nothing about using windows tools to burn DVDs as I do this on Linux. 4. Check the media against the official checksum you used in step 2. Here are my steps for doing this. Again this has to be done right. Sometimes you will get different results if you try to simply call sha512sum -b /dev/sr0 where /dev/sr0 is your DVD drive. 4.1. Use the isoinfo tool to retreive the blocksize and blockcount of the DVD you are checking. (/usr/bin/isoinfo -d -i /dev/sr0 where /dev/sr0 is your DVD device.) 4.2. Use dd to read the disk using the correct blocksize and blockcount settings and pipe through the checksum tool. IE: "/bin/dd if=/dev/sr0 bs=${blocksize} count=${blockcount} conv=notrunc,noerror status=noxfer | sha512sum -b" where ${blocksize} and ${blockcount} are the numbers you retrieved from using isoinfo. conv=notrunc,noerror come from another post I found once. So far so good... The dd man page explains that notrunc means do not truncate the output file and noerror means continue after read errors. status=noxfer is just to keep the whole thing a little quieter by not displaying transfer statistics. You can play with these settings if you like. They have done me fine for over 400 burns since I started doing this over 2 years ago. This will produce a checksum you can visually compare with the official checksum you retrieved from the mirrors to confirm if your disk is good. I do not know of a better way, without actually installing the OS, of verifying that the media is good. I have all this scripted so complete all these steps every time I ship a DVD to any customer who orders one. Compiling thunderbird

While it works well on i386, compilation fails for x86_64. I want to add up the quotas I've assigned on a particular partition and see if the total is bigger than the disk. It's possible to do this (awkwardly) using repquota or quota. Is there no more accurate/elegant way? I'm trying to add a long list of mount options in my fstab, and break the entry over 2 lines, as it goes off screen. hey centos long time no hear! :) I'm having a small issue where the backup jobs that I set to run in the crontab of the backup user do not appear to be running. way to replace DELL PERC 6/E card???

we have several R900 servers with PERC 6/E card in it. Recently it we getting some message on /var/log/message say change to "write back" and change back to "write through". We figure out it is PERC 6/E card battery weak. My questions are: 1. some battery only use one year (some even shorter) and already this problem. 2. How come PERC 5/E does not have this issue? 3. where is DISK array information store for PERC 6/E? I did NOT see NVRAM on PERC 6/E card. 4. when replace PERC 6/E card and power on server sometime it will ask you "import configuration" ans some time it won't. Why? 5. When replace PERC 6/E card and power on. Server ask "import configuration" should I answer "yes"? 6. where can I find documentation which mention "import configuration"? Thanks.

ok, playing around with netstat I figure all the ports that need to be open in iptables for this thing to work, I figure having the firewall down was too big of a risk so why not figuring out the ports and opening them in iptables and sharing the knowledge with you guys. The following ports are to be open: 111 tcp/udp 32803 tcp/udp 32769 udp 892 tcp/udp 875 tcp/udp 2049 tcp/udp If I only mentioned tcp or udp after the port it means either or both, if you see one/two it means both protocols must be enable. Also make sure you tweaked around you /etc/sysconfig/nfs file, I noticed that by default you need to have some of the stuff from there un-comment for it to work, I will post my file so you can use it as a skeleton to change yours. If you have any questions let me know and I will try to help you out. My nfs config bellow ( this only applies to Centos 5.5), I didn't test in another release. All - I am running a virtual windows 7 (pro 64) on centos 5.5 x86_64. I was hoping to run virtual XP inside windows7 in this configuration. I get an error about cannot start virtual XP when I try this. Do I not have something setup correctly or can I not run a "double" virtual environment? Thanks, Jerry

ok, I got things working flawlessly. Call me stupid for not checking the sha1sum of the DVD ISO of the first mirror. When I checked the ISO sha1sum it didn't check the posted figure under the centos.org, so I thought something may be wrong witht hat DVD ISO. I re downloaded the ISO and its all working flawlessly now, off course I won't go into the details of the firewall issues and the actual NFS configuration, I will create a video to help people out doing this install via NFS. Anyone recomended a good screen capture application to do this task, after I create it I will posted in youtube for all to see it. Thank you all and don't forget to check all your sha1sum or md5 keys from DVD or CD ISO, it looks like we can't trust the actual mirrors. Thank you again. NFS install is mega fast in a 1Gbps network. Converting to maildir

Looking for a guide on converting to Maildir. Here are our relevant specs. sendmail-8.12.11-4.RHEL3.6 (we may not be able to upgrade this due to too many modifications) imap-2002d-14 procmail-3.22-10.el3.centos.0 To a maildir setup... <rant> I was in a panic today at work because the backup server is filling up too quickly, backing up peoples email. Further it is not backing up often enough. I just lost all of today's email. I hate mbox and imap and outlook... </rant> All the maildir stuff I can find is postfix oriented. Thank you for the responses, still I don't find an answer. I am learning Centos from the ground up, I need to learn how to install this via NFS. I am aware that FTp and HTTP and options available, but what is the point of having NFS during the install if it doesn't work. I need to find a way to get the installation going at least for learning purposes. If you have any clues give me a hand, I am not planning to have to running in my environment but at least i would have the concept under my belt. noob question about mock

Hi, Been recently more and more tempted to use mock for building rpms, but looking at it I have one problem. As far as I could read about it, mock essentially rebuilds srpms so to use it I would need a separate "classical" build environment to create those srpms in the first place. Hi, I need to use PHP 5.2 in my Centos 5.X servers. I've been using the one found in Testing for more than a year without problems but I feel that it is not being updated in a while, specially with the security issues. I found a post about this iuscommunity.org which maintains 5.2 and 5.3 rpm packages for Centos/RedHat but I'd like to know if anyone in this is using the 5.2 packages in a production environment.

Running yum update on CentOS 4.8 32 bit I keep getting this: --> Running transaction check --> Processing Dependency: perl(Compress::Raw::Zlib) = 2.024 for package: perl-IO-Compress --> Finished Dependency Resolution Error: Missing Dependency: perl(Compress::Raw::Zlib) = 2.024 is needed by package perl-IO-Compress I try to uninstall perl-IO-Compress but something like 91 packages depend on it. Any ideas?

Dear CentOS community, I have install centos via CD, DVD and Directly off the net via http and FTP. Now I want to do a NFS install from a local server and a client. Both, client and server are in the same vlan 10.14.10.0/255.255.255.0. The server has a static 10.14.10.15 address and the client gets its own address via DHCP. I download the DVD image from one of the mirrors and placed it under /centos-media/centosdvd32/DVD/CentOS-5.5-i386-bin-DVD.iso which is a dedicated partition on the server to hold all images. After that I exported the usual entries under /etc/exports and reloaded NFS using /sbin/service nfs reload. cannot ping my virtual machine

Dear All, I had my earlier post sub virtual machine does not start up.. by the way i did manage to solve my problem . i actually dont know what could be the real cause but I did reconnect my cd rom drive and voila did come up let me explain i have a sun blade server which conects the keyboard , mouse and cd rom with a front panel USB cable . so the cd rom was removed and hence my virtual servers were not starting up but now i see a new problem. i am not able to ping the gateway let me explain my sun blade has 2 network cards wqith centos 5.5 one has a public ip and the other my internal network ip. the gateway for my sun blade is the public ip now from the sun server i can ping the gateway. also i can ping the private network gateway both of which on my core switch now my virtual machine has a private network ip ( the same network range as the interface ip ) but when i try to ping the gateway i am not to ping the public ip network and private ip network is on separate vlans apprecite if some can advice and help me if you need any more information plsss do ask regards simon

php.ini disabled notices still shows notices in the logs

Hello, I did some google searches but could not find anyone raising a similar issue immediatly but perhaps there is already somewhere a bugreport upstream about this I did overlook ... When you disable notices in /etc/php.ini: error_reporting = E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE on a simple LAMP setup of CentOS 5.x (running 5.0 up to 5.5) I still see notices in the log files ... (which causes a serious overhead of logs in my case ...) Anyone can confirm this and/or can point me towards bugreports/solutions? Regards, George

Grub upgrade for CentOS 5.5?

Stupid question (I'm guessing). I'm currently tri-booting (or would like to be) VectorLinux 6 Deluxe, CentOS 5.5 and an evaluation copy of Red Hat 6. I'm using CentOS's grub. VectorLinux and CentOS boot fine, but Red Hat won't load. I think I read somewhere that CentOS's grub is too old for ext3, 256 (something or others). So, is it possible to download and install a newer version of grub for CentOS 5.5? (This has been a problem with other tri-boot attempts). If not, is their a way to boot Red Hat from the install DVD? Since it's only a 30 day evaluation, booting from DVD or CD would be fine, but I don't see the option. Thanks for any pointers. -- RonB -- Using CentOS 5.5

This was very helpful Akemi...I was loading centos in two other identical servers today and was having such a hard time loading it from DVD, DVD appears to be crashing, I even re-downloaded the image 3 times from three different mirrors and burn them with different applications (Nero, Roxio, and poweriso), worse case scenario it must be something with the Memorex DVD Media. Anyway, after two hours of trying I decided to do a network install and everything went flawless. mount.cifs with kerberos

Hi all, Has anyone been able to mount windows shares with mount.cifs using kerberos credentials? I can get a kerberos ticket at login or use kinit and then connect via smbclient: > kinit username > smbclient -k \\server\share I'd like to be able to mount the share like this: > mount.cifs //server/share /mnt -o user=username,sec=krb5 The above command returns: mount error 95 = Operation not supported Using sec=krb5i returns: mount error 126 = Required key not available Some of the stuff I read said that mount.cifs doesn't support kerberos yet, but that wasn't recent.

centos6 filesystem size limit

I just read the rhel6 filesystem size limit. http://www.redhat.com/rhel/compare/ It says 16TB limit for ext4 (same as ext3)?!?! I thought ext4 was supposed to support 1EB ( ~ 1 million TB) limit. That was one of the main advantages of rhel6. After a little more digging all I found was that the user space formatting tools (mkfs.ext4) only support 32bit filesystems (not 48bits). I'm surprised about this, I thought people would be waiting for >16TB support in rhel6. Does anyone know if this is going to change in point releases of rhel/centos6? The problem with VMWare Server is that it is a discontinued product for longer time and they don't provide us with a suitable replacement. So our institute had to switch to VMWare workstation that can be run as a server, too. I'm running CentOS 5.5 as the Host OS and 5.5 and RHEL6beta as guests. I have followed this tutorial to install icecast on Centos 5.5, http://www.howtoforge.com/linux_webradio_with_icecast2_ices2 but cannot find the ices package for sending the audio to icecast for it to stream. I would like to send the data as mp3, if there is a suitable program to do this. Has anyone on the list done this on Centos? Dear all, I have been struggling with my first PXEboot today, using a kickstart with packages served over http on the local network. The details: - Anaconda is using 100% CPU - CentOS 5.5 i386 downloaded yesterday - .iso md5sums checked out good - 0 network errors showing (ifconfig) - console 1 displays: "Installing httpd-..." virtual machines refuse to start up

Dear All, am new to xen and recently implemented it. i had some issues initially but googling arround and some wise replies from you guys out there managed to clear them. now I have 2 virtual machines on my xen domains one is windows 2003 and other windows2008 both the virtual machines were working fine for about a week jus 2 days back we had a change in our network . i mean we rearanged the vlans so the linux host server which runs xen was moved to another vlan then i fould that i could not ping the linux xen host . on further investigations i fould that there was another file created for my ethernet device ifcfg-eth1.bak and also ifcfg-eth1 existed. the ifcfg-eth0 existed as before the right config for my eth1 was there in ifcfg-eth1.bak file so i renamed the ifcfg-eth1.bak to ifcfg-eth1 and did a network service restart and then found that i could reach the xen host server . but fould that one of my virtual server was shut i tried to restart it in virt-manager but it gave a error although the other virtual machine was running so i tried to restart my linux xen host server and then found that the virtual server which was running also had not started . so i tried to start it and it would not start and after long time gives error here below i paste the error message googling arround did not lead me to any possible solution really would apprecite if any guys out there would advice and help thanks and regards simon ----------------------------- /var/messages log.... I use the KB SSL Enforcer https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/flcpelgcagfhfoegekianiofphddcko… so i could browse the net safer [i mean webserver <-> me] with using https, if available. The problem is: e.g.: facebook... if i go to https://www.facebook.com/ that's ok, it's https. But all the links are "http" on the site.. if i click on a "http" link, it will request the page on "http", and THEN it switches to "https". Heres the problem. How/where could i write a privoxy rule, to rewrite all the "http" links to "https"? [so that it would by always trully over https] Are there any "general" rules (with privoxy), so that i don't have to write rules / site? with the KB SSL Enforcer its always first http, then it recognizes that the site can do https, than it switches to it. But i want to "bypass" the http part. thank you for any information Happy New Year!

Happy new year :D i have just installed centos 5.5 on my vmware to test my server,i found that i need nasm x64 to compile my assembly code,the yum database only has 0.98 version which does not support 64bit. the nasm version 2(rpm from offcial site) requires glibc 2.7, i know its a core component, but is there a way to upgrade it without break system? thanks for your time :D NamoBhagavan Max Haann

Dear All, I am sorry for this post if at all i used the wrong forum but I guess someone out there will be there to advise me and help me out and would be really apprecite and be grateful i have new to xen and has setup my first virtual machine I have a centos 5.5 xen server working perfect and have installed a virtual 2008 server and its working fine . Actually i created the virtual machine in manager installation wizard with the following option. in the storage option I selected File (disk Image) the location /var/lib/xen/images/image.img ( I have about 400gb free in /var partition) size i choose 15000 mb deselect the checkbox ... allocate entire virtual disk now since the below warning says if you dont allocate the entire disk now , space will be allocated as needed while the virtual machine is running . The 2008 server was installed perfect. and also I did install some software and c drive showed me 800 mb free now I tried to copy 1 gb file to my virtual machine and it said I dont have space . Now I was thinking that additional space would be allocated on the fly as the note says above i am just wondering why its not allocating more space or what would be the ideal way now for allocating more space if I wanna create a new virtual machine choosing the block device( partition option) is the correct way to avoid this problem?? I actually would like the virtual machine to use as much as it requires as long as there is free space on my local disk apprecite your kinfd advice and help regards simon

Should be simple and perhaps I'm tired but it's not coming to me. In its simplest form... for old in `cat "$FILENAME"`;do echo "$old" dirname "$old" new="$(echo $old | sed 's/\*/\-/')" done I'm trying to take out some stupid Macintosh things - in this case filenames with asterisks but I have others like tilde's and probably others that I haven't come across. appliance to embed Centos

I'm looking for some kind of appliance like box, maybe something like this:http://www.soekris.com/net5501.htm on which I could deploy iptables based firewall/openvpn/DNS and other local network services in a wide area network. I would probably install on a flash device. I would prefer something that was relatively easy to install on, or at least has been used with CentOS before, where I'm not needing to pull my hair out finding working drivers, building custom kernels etc. Though I might spend time down the road to come up with an extremely minimal install, for rapid deployment in the first round, I'd like to be able to do a pretty standard install and have a full featured CentOS system that I could logon to and use for local network administrative tasks. I could use something like a Mac mini, but my sense is there are are probably less expensive and more suitable devices. - Two ethernet interfaces - working drivers for CentOS - flash - enterprise quality (i.e. not some flakey little home router device) - fast enough to do openvpn encryption on WAN links ranging from 50mb to 100mb Though I do want enterprise quality, my sense is to make the device affordable enough that I could keep spares on site for backup purposes. I would appreciate anyones experience with deploying such a setup. Thanks, Nataraj
