Hello Guys, This is a virtual server hosted by some guys in UK. Please help me out here, i dont seem to get the required sources. Where do i get the sources required to compile dahdi? I have searched to no avail. faster fsck ?

Hi, we have CentOS ftp server (vsftpd) which has a lot of users who are writing and reading a lot of small files from/into its own accounts (and other servers - using samba client - are reading these files and putting them into outside database). Since this server is under heavy load its availability is important. >From time to time we "crash" this server (don't ask why ...) but then fsck is running for over 20-30 minuts. The question is: is there any other _stable_ filesystem (xfs ?, jfs ?) which we can use instead of ext3 which is (quite) immune to crashes and whose fsck is "faster" (by design) then in ext3 ? CentOS 5.5: bind config is missing the slave zone definitions

Hi all, I have two near identical CentOS 5.5 machines; both are running named server (DNS). On one using system-config-bind I can easily define a slave zone; on the other, it is a no go: it says the definition is there, etc. but there is no corresponding file in /var/named/chroot/var/named/slaves . Any idea why that would be? What gives? I use the simplest possible zone definitions - forward IN slave, one forwarder. Thanks. Boris.

adding user ldif to ldap

hi list.. I am trying to add an ldif with my users that I have derived from /etc/passwd. for some reason ldapadd is choking on the first entry... I've also tried removing the first one and predictably each one fails in exactly the same way...may I ask how best to correct this? ssh with shared home dir

CentOS 5.x on Geode LX

Greetings all- I'm currently working with CentOS 5.x (various version 5.0 - 5.5) attempting to run it on a system based on the AMD Geode LX CPU. There are known issues with this CPU running Centos 5, specifically those listed here: http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=2552 The kernel and system run fine on the Geode LX, but the installer detects the CPU as i586. Since there is no i586 kernel package available, the installer dies. I've attempted the workaround here: http://lists.baseurl.org/pipermail/yum-devel/2009-August/005767.html It basically tells anaconda the CPU arch is i686. I extracted the stage2.img, updated the specified files, then recreated the squashfs image. But, it still does not work. Apparently this works on Fedora... necessary/unused rpm packages

Is there a way to identify if an rpm package is unused, or how much it is used? I would like to reduce my load time by removing unused packages in my kickstart, but do not want to cause problems for users on active systems by guessing which ones are not necessary (I load everything with kickstart now). If I could find the packages are not used I could start by excluding them from a load and be fairly certain my users would not be impacted.

interesting kvm lvm collision issue

I've been running into a reproducible problem when using default LVM volume group names to present block devices for virtual machines in KVM, and I'm wondering why it is happening. On dom0 I make a default VolGroup00 for the operating system. I make a second VolGroup01 for logical volumes that will be block devices for virtual systems. In VolGroup01, I make two lv's for one system: lv.sys1, and lv.sys1-data. I then build a new virtual machine called sys1, using lv.sys1 for the root filesystem, and lv.sys1-data for an independent data partition. Everything works great after installation, and vgdisplay on both systems looks great. If I then run vgscan, however, on the host system, it picks up the VolGroup01 I created _within_ the virtual machine, so I now have 2 VolGroup01's with different UUIDs showing up on dom0. Now I can see how vgscan would mistakenly see the VolGroup01 of sys1 on the block device lv.sys1-data, but why are the VolGroup00 vg's not colliding as well? Every user in LDAP queried when one user logs on.

Hi I have configured a machine to authenticate against LDAP. When I log onto the box using the newly created user I see a LDAP search request for every user that exist in the directory. If I have only 20 users even a 100 that is not a problem but when I start going to 10000 users I start getting some weird errors and timeouts because of the time it takes to download the data to the client. I have tested this against 389 Directory Server and OpenLDAP and both give the same behaviour described above. I have tried adding a nss_base directives in /etc/ldap.conf but it has had no effect. my /etc/ldap.conf: binddn uid=SysAuth,ou=Service Accounts,dc=mycompany bindpw secret pam_password clear base dc=betfair nss_base_passwd ou=people,dc=mycompany?sub nss_base_group ou=Groups,dc=mycompany?sub nss_base_group ou=PrivateGroups,dc=mycompany?sub nss_base_group ou=SystemGroups,dc=mycompany?sub sizelimit 1000 idle_timelimit 5 timelimit 10 bind_timelimit 5 nss_reconnect_tries 1 nss_reconnect_maxconntries 1 nss_reconnect_sleeptime 1 nss_reconnect_maxsleeptime 1 nss_reconnect_maxconntries 1 I have also played around with various debug levels in /etc/ldap.conf but I have not really been succesfull in matching requests I see there to requests I see in wireshark. The man page in centos (man pam_ldap and nss_ldap ) also does not make any mention of available log levels or what they do. I have also scanned the source code for some more info on log levels but did not find anything usefull. If it is in the source code then please point me to it. I have gone through the pam list logs and the closest I could find was the following thread: https://www.redhat.com/archives/pam-list/2009-September/thread.html and a similar thread in December 2010. This threads although similar is related to groups and my problem is with every user being queried. I am fairly certain (hopeful at least) that is a config error on my part but I have not been able to find that error yet and would welcome any assistance in finding the problem. advice on using daemontools on centos production servers

Hi advisors , I would some suggestions on using http://cr.yp.to/daemontools.html . My requirements is to use less systems daemon checks in nagios but concentrate more on business / application level checks . We have lots of daemons like below > 1. ) snmpd > 2.) ntp > 3.) SSH > 4.) crond > 5.) php-cgi > 6.) nginx > 7.) Postfix > 8.) wackamole > 9.) spread > 10.) atop > 11.) redis > 12.) taillog-dopa > 13.) taillog-user > 14.) rsyncd ... ETC. We use nagios checks + event-handlers in case of daemon failure . My views is to use daemontool to control all these daemons , and create a single nagios check which scans /service/ directory and alerts for daemons which are getting restarting in unwanted ways. Some of my friends will argue about daemontools being non-unixy and unconventional , But I had good experience with daemontools on around 3000 servers earlier in my previous organization . X windows won't start after update to autofs

Hello everyone, Maybe this doesn't make sense, but after I updated autofs yesterday and rebooted this morning, X windows won't go. It tries with the old configuration---doesn't work. It tries a fresh config and fails. I can't copy and paste, but it says screens found, but no usable configuration. Couldn't start X server on card 0 Couldn't start X server with old config, (EE) NV(0): No valid initial configuration found (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usuble configuration. Memory warning

Folks, Something to watch out for: in the last few months, we've gotten a bunch of new computers (end of budget year), and several have had serious memory errors. If they were all from one manufacturer, I'd figure it was them, but we have had this happen on a Sun, a Dell, and a Penguin, and the large memory (4G, 8G) in all of them was manufactured by Hynix. mark, about to talk to Dell and Sun

Hi Everybody :) I'm sorry if this is unwanted noise but I'm struggling to find the answer to what is probably a ridiculously simply problem. Setup vncserver but it likes to run as a user (reading parameters from ~/.vnc/xstartup of the user the process runs as). graphics driver

I did installation of CentOS5.5 in text mode and made changes at the following places in the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf : section "device" identifier : "vesa" driver:"vesa" section "screen" device:"vesa" Also in the file /etc/inittab I changed id:3:initdefault to id:5:initdefault so that I can boot linux in graphical mode. I had to make the changes in xorg.conf because the visibility of the graphics was so poor that it was impossible to work. The installation was done on Dell Inspiron N5010 with the chipset: Intel(R) HM57 Express chipset LPC interface controller 3B0B which is a part of Mobile intel 5 series The video controller is: Intel (R) HD Graphics Although graphics is there but the resolution and refresh rate are limited to 1024*768 and 0Hz, so I need to find the video driver. I had given "i810" in xorg.conf but that didn't work. Which driver is recommended?

Just recently bought a Dell E6410 with a Intel® HD Graphics with ExpressCard with I7-640m processor. Having some issues getting a graphical env to work. By just the looks of lspci X is wanting to use the VGA Compatable controller: Intel Corp Core Processor Intergrated graphics controller. Everything else is using Intel Corp Series 5/3400 Series Chipset. Has anyone else had any luck getting similar intel onboard grphics to work? -- Bo Lynch

I've just noticed a curious wildcard behaviour, which I can't really explain. Let's say I wanted to list all the files or directories in /tmp starting with any uppercase character. Normally, I would do this : $ ls -d /tmp/[A-Z]* Curiously enough, this command lists *all* the content of /tmp, consisting of a majority of files and directories starting with a *lowercase* character. I've tested this on two different machines, with the same results. I'm puzzled. Can anybody offer an explanation for this curious behaviour ? Cheers, Niki

Hi. I'm trying to install gmcs so that I can build gbrainy, a mental exerciser. I am not sure what package provides, maybe mono-devel? however mono-devel fails to install because, it says, mono-basic requires mono-core. I have mono-core installed. hi all! back in Aug several of you assisted me in solving a problem where one of my drives had dropped out of (or been kicked out of) the raid1 array. something vaguely similar appears to have happened just a few mins ago, upon rebooting after a small update. I received four emails like this, one for /dev/md0, one for /dev/md1, one for /dev/md125 and one for /dev/md126: Subject: DegradedArray event on /dev/md125:fcshome.stoneham.ma.us X-Spambayes-Classification: unsure; 0.24 Status: RO Content-Length: 564 Lines: 23 This is an automatically generated mail message from mdadm running on fcshome.stoneham.ma.us A DegradedArray event had been detected on md device /dev/md125. Faithfully yours, etc. P.S. POP3 server

Hi folks A POP3 client not configured to keep a copy of messages on the server, as soon as retieve a message send a DELE commando with the number of the just retrieved message. Then, at the end of the POP3 session, the clent sends a QUIT command, wich order POP3 server to close the conection and delete the messages marqued with DELE command. So, I'm wondering if it's possible to tell Dovecot to actually delete the message when receiving a DELE command instead of marking it for deletion after the QUIT. Or is any other POP3 server capable of doing this other than Dovecot. (running on CentOS of course) Thanks David

free space created during partitioning while installing CentOS5.5

I installed CentOS5.5 on Dell Inspiron N5010. During partitioning, when I created swap = 6GB then additional 4MB free space was created and when I created ext3 for linux=217GB, then additional 7MB free space was created. Didn't understand why these 2 extra free spaces were created.

Sendmail - block mail based on recipient address?

Maybe someone can help me sort this out. I want to block outbound mail from my network based upon the recipient address. Internal servers should still be allowed to send emails, but not to a few specific addresses. I've tried creating some rules in /etc/mail/access but to no avail. Is it possible to do this?

network interface up but no data

Hi List, I am running a x86_64 Centos server, after a reboot the network has decided to not work.. this particular machine has 8 eth ports eth0-7. eth0 and eth3 were bonded (mode 1 ) after reboot the bond did not work. It came up OK but no data was passing through it. all other interfaces on the machine were working. I decided to remove the bond, so after removing the bond i was left with eth0 using the same IP as the bond used. however it still does the same thing, it starts up with no errors but i cannot even ping the default gateway, tcpdump shows nothing on the interface. HI people , I am not sure whether this is right mailing list for this question , but i tried subscribing to redhat rpm list , failed to do so . I'm facing a issue while creating RPM for python punjab http://code.stanziq.com/punjab/ I've created a spec file which contains the list of files to packaged http://pastie.org/1236027 And when i try to run rpmbuild -ba command on this spec file , rpmbuild tried to optimize the python byte coded files , which i can see from ( i guess macros ) " + /usr/lib/rpm/brp-python-bytecompile" , and fails after that . http://pastie.org/1236040 please help me about controlling this behaviour so that I can skip the "brp-python-bytecompile" section . How to install and update a src rpm?

Hello, is there please a way to install and later update a src rpm - instead of locating and downloading that package manually? I've run: "yum install rpm-build mock yum-utils" successfully. But when I try to run "yumdownloader --source httpd", I get the error listed at the bottom of my mail. Do I maybe need to add a file to /etc/yum.repos.d/ ? I'd like to have httd source somewhere in a good defined place (will it be $HOME/src or /usr/src ?) because I'm trying to develop an Apache module. I'm using CentOS 5.5. They seem to randomly hang when nobody is logged in at the console, i.e. I notice a hanged computer but have not heard complaints about computers hanging while a user was at the keyboard. Hi all, Does anyone have, or know of a comparison chart of the different network adapters, i.e. 1GB / 10GB, Infiniband, etc. And if possible with a few top brand NIC's and switches listed as well. I would like to see, for example, what the max throughput is of a 1GB NIC (and this could probably differ from PCI to PCIE-x1 to PCIE-x4), and 10GBE. Different switches would probably also have different ratings, but could a layer 2 switch & layer3 switch deliver the same performance for example? Howto align partitions in Linux + NetApp

Hi, NetApp support has suggested us aligning partitions to improve performance, in short: starting sector must be divisible by 8. How can I move the start point in a misaligned partition -in production, with ext3- under Linux? Mount/automount fails with krb5-enabled nfs4

I have a problem that is driving me crazy. Our nfs server is running Solaris. Most clients mount directories from it with no problems, but not all. All clients that have problems run CentOS (5.4 and 5.5). I've found one or two of each version that fail, but also a couple of each version that work. The mounting is done for user home directories via autofs but that doesn't seem to make any difference, the same problem appears when trying to mount manually. Kerberos is used for authentication. In the second line, the uid if the user changes from 0 (I'm logged in as root when doing both tests) to 121 (which is the uid of the user owning the home directory I'm trying to mount in both cases). Perhaps this is a clue, but I don't know what it tries to tell me. I can't find any relevant differences in configuration. I've gone through files in /etc on a working and a non-working machine looking for changes but not finding anything relevant in /etc/sysconfig/nfs, /etc/hosts, /etc/idmapd.conf, /etc/krb5.conf, /etc/host.conf, /etc/nsswitch.conf, /etc/resolv.conf and others. SELinux is not running. There is plenty of space in /tmp and it is writable by all. Among the total set of clients there are multiple versions of nfs-utils and kernel used, but I can pick a set of one working and one non-working client that have the same versions for both (nfs-utils-1.0.9-47.el5_5 and kernel-2.6.18-194.17.1.el5) so that doesn't appear to be the problem. I've tried yum reinstall for the nfs package to no effect. That doesn't work for the kernel package, but I've compared the md5 sums for the gss modules between a working and a non-working machine and found no differences. Obviously, I need to check something else, but what? Please help! Hans

Preserving LVM after after os reload

Hi guys, I have two disks, one with OS and a second disk containing an LVM. I would like to OS reload the server without losing LVM. I heard that LVM is self sustaining. Is that true ? Should I backup something(using vgcfgbackup & vgexport ?) to get LVM running after os reload. Thanks in advance. -- Sherin

Dear all, i'm writing a certain script which does a specific task in a repetitive manner, i'm going to give a similar script with the same concept hope you could advise me to a better way: USER1="roland" USER2="dany" USER3="kevin" cp -r /opt/$USER1/test /backup/$USER1 cp -r /opt/$USER2/test /backup/$USER2 such a command would be repeated 832 times (this is just an example) so instead of copying the above line 832 times and appending that user's number in each "$USER" is there a way to do it in a smarter way ? thanks, --Rolad

No "last command" in VIM?

Although I made sure that vim-enhanced.i386 is installed, pressing : then upArrow does not show me the last command that I've typed. Might I still be using vim-minimal erroneously? How to fix that? I don't see any mention of this in google or the past few months of fine archives. Thanks. missing dependency for package

Hello everyone, I know this isn't strictly CentOS query, but I am hoping that someone here with more experience than myself might have some thoughts. I am trying to get a plugin working for Ganglia on a CentOS 5.5 box, in a testing environment. The plugin is for apache monitoring, called Ganglia-Logtailer. This plugin requires the executable /usr/bin/logtail in order to work. The only packages that have this executable, that I have been able to find, is part of the epel-testing repository in the logcheck package. When I try to install the package from that repository, it is missing the dependency, perl-mime-construct, which I am not able to find packaged anywhere. It appears that the logcheck package includes several other executables that I do not need, and those other executables are what requires the perl-mime-construct package. My question is, does anyone know of a source to get this package that would also include the necessary requirements? If not, any way that I can rebuild the source package, and remove the things that I do not need, and thus removing their dependencies? If I have to maintain my own package for this, I can, but I would prefer another option, if available. Xen3.3 rpm for 32Bit?

Hi folks, I would like to test Xen3.3 on CentOS 5.5 on an older machine which is not 64bit capable. Since this is just a "first impression" test I do not want to fuzz with compiling the kernels and tools myself (that comes in a later step). Can someone please point me to a repo with 32bit Xen3.3 kernels for CentOS 5? GITCO supplies 64bit kernels only, and googling brought up nothing else. Thanks for any hint or help. Dirk

I had posted the following question 4-5 days ago. I want to add something to the question which is important. The question was: During installation of CentOS5.3 from DVD, the installation was interrupted due to an error in a rpm package as the DVD had lot of scratches. So I burned image of CentOS5.5 on DVD. I selected installation in graphical mode. The first graphical interface screen comes from where we proceed further by clicking next. This screen is almost black and its impossible to carry out further installation as visibility is very poor. I was trying above for Dell Inspiron laptop which has Windows7 installed on it. I checked the CentOS5.5 DVD on another system which is desktop and found that the graphical interface is perfectly alright there. So is there any setting that has to be done in the laptop?

Trying to update a user's system, and yum gives up, because it wants to update libmpeg2, and there's a dependency - the currently installed version is required by libmpeg2-utils, and there seems to be no update to that. Anyone have an idea why this is the case? I really don't want to add another repo just for this workstation, when libmpeg2 does have an update in its current repos. mark

chroot from 32-bit to 64-bit filesystem?

I have a 32-bit PXE environment and I want to chroot to a CentOS x64 root filesystem. Of course that doesn't work. Any tricks or hacks that would allow me to do that? Currently I get the error: chroot: /bin/bash: Exec format error What if I updated my PXE environment to 64-bit. Could I then chroot to a 32-bit? I use PXE to quickly troubleshoot both 32-bit and 64-bit arch. Thanks. -Scott

excel parser (preferably perl)?

I'm getting tired of converting spreadsheets that someone else updates to csv so my perl scripts can push the data into a mysql database. Is there a better way? I haven't had much luck with perl-Spreadsheet-ParseExcel (and find it odd that yum prefers the .32 version from epel over .57 from rpmforge anyway). Is the current CPAN version better? Or the equivalent java tools? Or maybe a scripted OpenOffice conversion would be possible. Needs to deal with both xls and xlsx formats, the odd characters that are confused with quotes even after csv conversion, numbers with $'s and commas embedded, excel's date formatting nonsense, etc. -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

pdflush kernel thread pops up every 10 seconds or so and video decoding grinds to a halt for 1/2 a second

Hi. A friend of mine was doing real-time video decoding on Fedora Core 13 and he had a performance glitch (1/2 a second freeze) every 5-10 seconds. "top" showed flush-253:0 process at the moment of the freeze. Major device number 253 corresponds to device-mapper. I advised my friend to re-install his FC13 without LVM, to see if the glitch is related to LVM. After re-installing FC13 without LVM, he is seeing the glitch every 10 seconds, and it shows flush-8:16 where before it said flush-253:0. 8 is scsi disk driver. So it's not an LVM thing... maybe a kernel thing? I suggested he try Fedora 14 beta, as it has a newer kernel. Maybe this kernel thing is fixed in the newer kernel. He also tried CentOS 5.5, and saw a "pdflush" process popping up with the same frequency, and resulting in a similar glitch. Any other suggestions? Best, -at

I'm trying to install the Adaptec Storage Manager for the 21610SA SATA RAID controller on Centos 5.5. rpm reports that it failed on the dependency on libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2 yum provides */libstdc++-libc6.1-1.so.2 reports no matches found How can I install the required files to all the Adaptec Storage Manager to be installed?

Getting Wake on lan to work

My system is: Intel CC820 motherboard (which supports PME# wake up for wake on LAN) 3com 3C905C which also supports wake on LAN via PME# Linux 5.5 The motherboard BIOS is later than one that reports an issue with WOL and this particular network card was fixed. But when I turn off the PC (shutdown or poweroff commands or front panel button), it cannot be restarted via WOL. The network light on the Ethernet card goes off so it looks like power is not being retained on the card. Although both the card and the motherboard have WOL headers my understanding is that these are not necessary if using PME# - is that correct? (I don't happen to have a WOL cable so can't just try one to confirm). How can I make Linux shutdown and leave the Ethernet power on? The common suggestion on the 'net is to remove the "-i" switch from the shutdown script, but it was not present to start with.

Hi We are using centos 5.3 Operating system. It comes with basic gstreamer setup including gstreamer, gstreamer-tools, gstreamer-plugins-base and gstreamer-plugins-good packages. To support different media formats we had to install gstreamer-plugins-bad, gstreamer-plugins-ugly and gstreamer-plugins-ffmpeg from third party repository like rpmfusion as centos repository is not providing these packages. My question is, Can we use these packages ( bad, ugly and ffmpeg) without any legal or licensing issues? If No, Please tell the legal way of using them. thanks G Praveen

OpenLDAP, PAM, GDM Configuration on CentOS 5.5

Hello: I am currently establishing a LDAP installation for my department and hope to get a little help on some of the finer details of the configuration. OpenLDAP 2.3.43-12 is currently installed, configured and running on one of my servers with a few client installations querying authentication information from it. The ppolicy schema has been added to the configuration and a password policy has been added to the directory under "cn=default,ou=Policies,dc=domain,dc=com". Users are able to authenticate properly on the client machines to at least login; however, I have been unable to achieve the following functions: - Force user to change password on first login and display a prompt from gdm to facilitate the change - Lock user account from access and display a message from gdm to that fact These workstations are being used in a restricted mode so that the user may only work within X and may not open a terminal. Increased memory usage between 4.8 and 5.5

I'm running into a memory problem when trying to switch some web servers that are running centos4.8/x86_64 to centos5.5/x86_64. The new servers running centos5.5 are using a decent amount more memory than the centos4.8 servers. I've also tested newer versions and it doesn't seem to make a difference. I've looked into this quite a bit and below is what I've figured out so far. Looking at the output of running 'pmap -x <pid>' shows most of the libraries in 5.5 are using 2044K or 2048K of memory, but in 4.8 they're all using 1024K or less. How do I find out who is the maintainer of the php-pgsql package, please? I want to request upgrade from underlying postgresql-libs-8.1.21 (/usr/lib64/libpq.so.4) to postgresql84-libs-8.4.4 (/usr/lib64/libpq.so.5.2). Background on this request: Apache httpd's php's php-pgsql uses PostgreSQL 8.1 library (/usr/lib64/libpq.so.4), which leaks memory. PostgreSQL 8.4 library does not leak. Apache HTTP Server: httpd-2.2.3-43.el5.centos.3 mod_php: php-5.1.6-27.el5 PHP PostgreSQL interface is provided by: php-pgsql-5.1.6-27.el5, which uses postgresql-libs-8.1.21-1.el5_5.1 which provides /usr/lib64/libpq.so.4 which we've observed has a memory leak (and this memory leak is NOT present in libpq.so.5.2) I am trying to figure out how to get our httpd/mod_php/php-pgsql to use libpq.so.5.2 instead of libpq.so.4, and I thought I'd start by asking the php-pgsql maintainer, so this problem is fixed for everybody, not just for me. Folks, We've been having occasional issues with failover dhcpd. I went looking for "peer holds all free leases", and happened to run across <https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?format=multiple&id=610219>, which is rated important, and is supposed to be fixed in 3.0.5-24. Looking at the repo at kernel.org, all I see is what we have, dhclient-3.0.5-23.el5.x86_64.rpm. Any idea when this update will be released? mark "we won't mention 3.1 or 4.x"

Hi folks I have a CentOS box with 2 network cards. One is eth0 and the other is wlan0 (Linksys WUSB54GC USB wifi card) I use wlan0 to stay linked with other workstations in an small network and eth0 just in case I need to get wired to solve some problem. eth0 is always unpluged while things are going ok. Te problem is everytime my AP is turned off for whatever reason or the link is down, no matter the AP is working again, my wlan0 stays without link. Then I have to reboot to get wireless linked again. I'm not running Network Manager, For some reason, everytime I tried to start it, it just mess my network, trying to make wlan0 to get an IP from a DHCP server, no matter wlan0 have it's own IP address specified in ifcfg-wlan0. The Centos Box is unattended and everytime it happens I have to go to the other room and press the on/off button to restart it. (no display, keyboard or mouse in it) Any advices? How could I make NetworkManager to just link it again and not start messing with my network configuration? Cheers David

Hi all, Can anyone pleas tell me what would be best practice to use shared storage with virtual machines, especially when it involved high availability / automated failover between 2 XEN servers? i.e. if I setup 2x identical XEN servers, each with say 16GB RAM, 4x 1GB NIC's, etc. Then I need the xen domU's to auto failover between the 2 servers if either goes down (hardware failure / overload / kernel updates / etc). What is the best way to connect a NAS / SAN to these 2 servers for this kind of setup to work flawlessly? I have installed Postfix, Dovecot, and Squirrelmail on a CentOS 5.5 machine. In Squirrelmail a user can send mail, but he is not receiving replies. There is nothing relevant in the maillog other than the user's (successful) login attempts. I am at loss, I have been following tutorials such as the Perfect Server [1] series and other Google results, but I cannot get this thing to receive mail. What should I be checking? Thanks! qemu-kvm segfaults on starting guests

I have a Centos 5.5 on an AMD 64 system (Athlon II x2 250). I caught up on updates today, including -- kernel 2.6.18-194.17.1.el5 -- glibc 2.5-49.el5_5.5.i686 I have several guests that were working before the update, but now none of them will boot. With each attempt I get a message in /var/log/messages: -- kernel: qemu-kvm[xx]: segfault at 000000379fc0da11 rip 00002b9f2732283f rsp 00000000446a6e80 error 7 Has this happened to others? Any fix. I see similar bugreports, but they are not recent, and not quite like this. The closest thing I can find was on an nvidia list about vmware posted today -- so maybe this has something to do with needing to rebuild the nvidia drivers with every kernel update. Any ideas?

using a Laptop as a KVM console?

Hi all, Has anyone seen something like this before: I want to use a laptop as a KVM console. Basically when a technician goes to one of our datacentres, or clients he has to look for a free LCD, keyboard & mouse to connect to a server (no network access, reinstall, troubleshoot failed kernel / HDD, etc). And then hopefully there's an open power socker in that cabinet. So I'm thinking why not just use a laptop instead? It already has an LCD, keyboard, mouse & power. There was no proxy in the file /etc/yum.conf. I specified the proxy setting and now "yum list updates" is working. Hello listmates, I know this may sound stupid... but I am trying to set up a firewall/filter/forwarder using CentOS 5.5 machine as a platform and I am succeeding but only partially. Fro example, I am literally trying to forward HTTP and HTTPS (TCP 80 and 443) from the public interface to a private IP and TCP 80 works like a charm whereas TCP 443 seems to be a no-go. To that effect: does anyone know of a comprehensive relevant manual? I mean, I must be doing something wrong here though I ain't sure what. Any advice and suggestions much appreciated. Boris.

Hi! We have encountered a rather weird problem on a machine that we use for our network latency check (smokeping with fping). For an hour (or so) after boot it reports the ping time with a microsecond accuracy (ad it should). Then the millisecond accuracy starts. We have yet to identify the cause and the logs currently do not show anything. Please find an example of a good and a bad result below.
