During installation of CentOS5.3 from DVD, the installation was interuppted due to an error in a rpm package as the DVD had lot of scratches. So I burned image of CentOS5.5 on DVD. I selected installation in graphical mode. The first graphical interface screen comes from where we proceed further by clicking next. This screen is almost black and its impossible to carry out further installation as visibility is very poor.

Another wireless problem

Hi folks I have my Linksys WUSB54GC USB wifi card already working. Now I have another issue. Accidentally I tuned off my AP, and when switched it on again my wireless link is still down. I have to unplug the USB card and plug it again to get it working again. I'm new in wireless matter but this doesn't sounds logical to me. What if I loose the link for whatever reason? Should I have to unplug my usb card and plug it again? I don't think so, right? So, wich is the workaround here? Maybe there is a service I'm noy running wich detects the when the link comes up and conect automatically again? Thanks in advance David

Trying to get xen to boot off of an iso or a sysresc image so I can expand a filesystem to the extent of the LVM's free space.

I have a Xen LVM based VM with two partitions: /dev/VolGroup00/vm01p1 /dev/VolGroup00/vm01p2 p2 is about 50GB, I gave it's LVM an extra 30 or so using lvextend. How can I extend the partition to fill my free space and the filesystem? I don't mind offline, if I can get Xen to boot off an alternative media. I want to update the system because I haven't updated CentOS5.3 from the time when I installed it. But I am also afraid of directly using "yum update" command. I used "yum list updates" but theres a error displayed which I have already posted.

Wireless problem

Hi folks I just installed Centos 5.5. I heard about the new changes in wifi support. I tried a USB wifi card from Netgear, and It works fine. It didn't en Centos 5.4, so that's great news. The problem is I have a Linksys WUSB54GC USB wifi card and I want to make it work. I get this messages in /var/log/messages as soon as I plug it in. network interface question

Hi, I don't have ifcfg-eth1 in my /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts. But when I do ifconfig eth1 I can see output as below. For burning the image on DVD I found 2 iso files: CentOS-5.5-x86_64-bin-DVD-1of2.iso CentOS-5.5-x86_64-bin-DVD-2of2.iso I found out that the first one is 4.1GB and the second one is 412MB. Do I have to burn the first one on 1 DVD and the second one on another DVD?

I wish to add a second condition that NOT contains string sven.aluoor(a)ubs.com on the same line. Every file which contains "mailx", but not the string sven.aluoor(a)ubs.com in the same line. cheers Sven

aac and tag editing

As my iphone will not play nice with open source audio formats I'm forced to use aac. I have faac and produce .aac files that seems to play fine with Amarok but no tags. I usually use Easytag (from rpmforge) to deal with metadata on audio files, but despite the advertised ability to do mp4/aac it does not even show the files...... Anyone have any experience or pointers as to how I get the metadata sorted on these files? TIA Rob

Want to install CentOS 5.5 by burning the image on DVD. On the link: http://mirrors.hns.net.in/centos/5.5/isos/x86_64/, there is a list given. CentOS-5.5-x86 64-bin-DVD.torrent is in the list. So is the download of the .iso possible only through torrent? There is CentOS-5.5-x86 64-netinstall.iso Is this also an .iso which one can download to install CentOS5.5?

FIlename makes it appear that you need the 2.6.18-8.1.8 kernel from CentOS Extras: kvm-kmod-36-1.2.6.18_8.1.8.el5.src.rpm If I try to rebuild that with: rpmbuild --rebuild --target=x86_64 kvm-kmod-36-1.2.6.18_8.1.8.el5.src.rpm I get error that I need the 2.6.18-8 kernel-devel package, if I install that it will build but it results in a kernel module built for the 2.6.18-8 series but I need for my 2.6.18-194 series. So on your advice I jumped into my SPECS dir and tried: rpmbuild -bs --target=x86_64 kvm-kmod.spec and it gave me: Wrote: ~/kend/rpmbuild/SRPMS/kvm-kmod-36-1.2.6.18_194.11.4.el5.1.x64.src.rpm I guess it all comes down to experience. One server not showing SSH port, the other is.

I have two CentOS servers running SSH on two different non-standard ports. So far as I can tell, they have identical /etc/ssh/sshd_config files with the exception of the different port (both are 22xx). However, when running nmap on them, one betrays the port that SSH is running on, and the other does not. I have shut down iptables on both machines and the behaviour remains this way. What could be the cause? Specifically, how can I hide the port that SSH is running on? I'm sorry that I cannot provide the IP addresses, the owner of the servers doesn't want that! mtrr error

I need your help and DEL's tech support doesn't provide any help on this one. We have a lot of different type of DELL desktops from old-type hyper-thread cpu, to dual-core and quad-core cpus (most are Xeons). We run all versions of CentOS, but most are latest 5.5 (also up-to-date) and are very happy about that. The primary software on those Linux systems is IDL, which uses OpenGL libraries usually comes with video drivers. Now we are having problem with DELL T3500 with six-core cpu (6 GB memory). This is the only T3500 and six-core cpu we have right now. Here is the fact: 1. on T3500 with six-core, CentOS5.5, video card ATI Profire 2260, IDL 7.1. Using dmesg, it report mtrr: type mismatch for e0000000,10000000 old: uncachable new: >>>>>>>>>> write-combining >>>>>>>>>> mtrr: type mismatch for e0000000,10000000 old: uncachable new: >>>>>>>>>> write-combining when run IDL with simple draw function, got segmentation fault /proc/mtrr: reg00: base=0xdff00000 (3583MB), size= 1MB: uncachable, count=1 reg01: base=0xe0000000 (3584MB), size= 512MB: uncachable, count=1 Then I switched another ATI RV370, the mtrr error is gone, but still got segmentation fault But 2. on T3400 with dual-core, CentOS5.5, same ATI RV370 video card and IDL 7.1, everything works just fine. By the way, we have never had any such problem with all our DELL boxes using CentOS and IDL on T3400, the /proc/mtrr: reg00: base=0x00000000 ( 0MB), size=65536MB: write-back, count=1 reg01: base=0x3ff00000 (1023MB), size= 1MB: uncachable, count=1 reg02: base=0x40000000 (1024MB), size=1024MB: uncachable, count=1 reg03: base=0x80000000 (2048MB), size=2048MB: uncachable, count=1 When googling, someone out there suggest manually configure the MTRR, can somebody help us how to configure this six-core's MTRR? I am guessing this must be MTRR related. Is it possible the current Linux kernel doesn't understand six-core very well? using Linux as a front-end controller for a SAN?

Hi all, I hope someone can shed some light on this for me. Has anyone tried, or have experience with, setting up a Linux server to manage a few NAS devices and thus make them all visible to the clients as one large SAN? Basically, I'm thinking it would be a good idea to combine the current NAS's we have into one large system (typically a SAN?) and then let the clients all connect to one server (for authentication, LUN control, etc), but then when they need to access their drives / devices / LUN's, they get redirected to the specific server directly. I'm also thinking it could be a good way to say some IP addresses, i.e. instead of giving each NAS a public IP, they could all have private IP's and then everyone just connects to the public IP if needed. The servers which will access the NAS's will be on the same physical LAN and will also be on the same private IP subnet to make it easier. Sorry to be a pain but I'd really like PyDB2 (DB2 client for python). IBM only seem to offer the source which won't compile without a copy of DB2. I only need it to extract some info from a customer site so I don't really want to have to get DB2. any ideas? thanks

Samba issue accessing shares by IP address

We have a strange issue with Samba shares on our CentOS 5.5 systems in that we can access the shares by name, but not by IP address. First a little background. Recently, our domain controllers were upgraded and I had to tweak the smb.conf file by changing security from DOMAIN to ADS and adding a setting for realm. I can access the scratch share from any Windows PC in our domain without having to authenticate as long as I use the name of the CentOS system. But if I try to use the IP address of a CentOS system I get the "The network path was not found" error message. We have some systems in a lab from which we need to access the share by IP address. This worked before the recent changes, and I can't figure out which of these changes may have caused this. Any ideas? TIA for any help, Alfred

For some reason all the perl man pages cause yum errors like ------------------------------------- Transaction Check Error: file /usr/share/man/man1/c2ph.1.gz from install of perl-5.8.8-32.el5_5.2.x86_64 conflicts with file from package perl-5.8.8-32.el5_5.1.i386 ------------------------------------- 1. I don't really see how the man pages can cause conflicts; 2. More importantly, how should I deal with this? Scanner missing again

A while back I posted about my new HP J3600 scan/fax/copy/print-er and how it was visible to the root but not me as an ordinary user. I had no trouble configuring it as a printer, but the scanner was invisible to xsane until I added my user id to the lp group. Now it's gone again, except that it is visible as a usb device to me as a normal user, but xsane can't seem to find it any more. Since this was working on the 2.6.18-194.11.4 kernel, I rebooted that one, but it exhibited the same behavior, so I wrote off the new (...17.1) kernel as innocent. However, I am getting an error during startup on hpssd - it complains about python-dbus being missing. I can't find that either, but there _is_ a dbus-python 0.70 installed and it wants a version > 0.80, so I hauled down 0.83, built it and installed it and that didn't seem to help. recommended way to install source rpms?

yes, i've read the online docs and followed a link or two to find a simple way to do this, such as: http://sourceware.org/systemtap/wiki/SystemTapOnCentOS so, these days, is that the canonical way to download source rpms? now, note that i'm not arguing about whether this is a good idea. in my circumstances, i want the ability to just "yum download" source rpms so that i can have my students poke around in a source rpm and learn how to build one, nothing more. so, is that reasonable? to just manually add an extra repo file according to that link above (which appears to work perfectly well). frankly, the wiki page on downloading from source: http://wiki.centos.org/PackageManagement/SourceInstalls seems just a touch on the hysterical side. i don't disagree that installing packages from the source rpm is probably a questionable idea. but that doesn't justify simply not explaining how to do it easily. my plan is to install yum-utils to get yumdownloader, add the repo file suggested above, then have students: $ yumdownloader --source <package> so they can examine the source of some packages. is the approach i'm suggesting reasonable? thanks. rday -- ======================================================================== Robert P. Went with OpenDNS for now

A few weeks ago I asked about firewalls and family filters. Lanny Marcus, I believe, suggested OpenDNS. Just wanted to thank him (and everyone here) for their suggestions. Eventually I would like to learn about firewalls, but I don't really want to run another machine at this time. OpenDNS is trivial to set up on the router and looks to be just about exactly what I wanted. Thanks. installing 32 bit vlc on Centos 5.5??

I'm in yum dependency hell using epel, rpmforge and rpmfusion repos to install vlc on 32 bit Centos 5.5. Anyone have a better idea? Doesn't really have to be vlc I just want to be able to play a dvd and Movie Player complains about missing plugins without saying what they are. Hello CentOS I am having a bit of trouble importing an ldif into openldap, tho the syntax looks a-ok to me. I am attempting to import my sudoers list into my ldap configuration and I used an application called sudoers2ldif to generate the ldif. should i (theoretically) be able to boot a "git clone"d kernel on 5.5?

toward the end of a class on friday, just for fun, i showed the students how to install git, clone the latest kernel source, and build and install a new kernel. since it was getting close to end of day, i wanted to keep it simple and directed them to just "make defconfig" to see what would happen. the configuration and build of the kernel and modules worked fine, they installed the kernel and modules, then rebooted but the new kernel panicked almost immediately, apparently whining that it couldn't mount the root filesystem. since they were all running LVM-based systems, i assumed that perhaps we needed to explicitly add LVM support during the config step. i'd still like to be able to build and boot a new kernel on an updated centos box so, later today, i'm going to reinstall 5.5 on a system without LVM (just define some fixed filesystems) to see if that makes a difference. has anyone done this? should i be able to? to recap, all i want to do on a fully-updated centos 5.5 box is * install the development tools * install git * clone the latest kernel repo * make defconfig * make * install new kernel and modules * reboot to new kernel i'm willing to accept that it won't be a perfect kernel and perhaps some drivers will be missing, but at the very least, it should boot without panicking. again, anyone else done this? should it work? i'll try this later today as soon as i have access to my test system again. rday -- ======================================================================== Robert P. I have a question about software bridge setup (initscripts). ALL of the documentation for setting up a software bridge talks about setting the NICs into promisc mode. My question: Which is wrong? The documentation for setting up a software bridge? OR /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-eth? *I* have patched /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifup-eth to include the line: /sbin/ip link set dev ${DEVICE} promisc on just after the lines /sbin/ip addr flush dev ${DEVICE} 2>/dev/null /sbin/ip link set dev ${DEVICE} up Should I file a bug report? kmod-kvm for custom CentOS 5.5 kernel

Hello all! I have actual need to build a custom kernel.(Have to change Preemption model to 'server' and turn off Preempt the big kernel lock, ect) I have heard bits and pieces about these changing defaults in newer kernels but I haven't investigated that yet. Can anyone point me to a source package for kmod-kvm that will work with my 2.6.18-194.11.4.el5 kernel base?? I have spent 2 full days digging through packages on the web and I cannot come up with anything. Thinking of just going with trying out Xen instead, but of course I have an dd issue there too. Any help with either of these issues would be very much appreciated! Kickstart - URL command

Hi list, I'm fiddling with CentOS 5.5 and kickstarted installations via cobbler. In my environment I need to install using the HTTP protocol over a proxy. Does anyone know why the URL command doesn't support the --proxy method? I get an Anaconda error message stating that this method is not supported. Even though i found out about that method in documentation. Relevant section in my kickstart: # install system install url --url=http://1.2.3.4/cobbler/ks_mirror/CentOS-5.5-x86_64/ --proxy= http://5.6.7.8:12345 text firstboot --disable reboot Anyone with suggestions? Hi all, I hope someone can help me with this one. I am looking for a decent free / Open Source flash media server software which I can run on a Linux server. Adobe's Flash Media Server (http://www.adobe.com/products/flashmediaserver/) is very expensive and not within any reasonable cost range (R40K+). The Fladh Media Server uses the RMTP This is needed to run the following Joomla extension: http://www.joomplace.com/live-conference/live-conference.html which basically allows us to setup a Flash tutorial conference setup, similar to podcasts. We currently use CentOS Linux + cPanel, as well as CentOS + VirtualMin but I'm open to suggestion for other control panels as well if need be. Radeon HD 4550 driver

Upgraded the kernel to the latest, then tried to rebuild the proprietary Catalyst driver for a Radeon HD 4550 on a Dell Optiplex 980. The install dies, with a c error. Anyone else out there succeed in building one on the 2.6.18-194.17.1.el5-x86_64 kernel? I went to the ATI website, and the "installation instructions" include that it needs a) 32 bit software (which? dunno) and b) a couple of Xfree86 packages (huh? why? dunno, probably they haven't updated this page in years). Btw, it's fine for single head, but a relatively ordinary dual-head setup, with what Nvidia calls "individual desktops" ("spanning" seems to mean the same thing on both monitors). The xorg driver seems to work for single head, but no joy with dual head. For that matter, anyone have any contacts? I'm still mousing around the ATI website trying to find an appropriate contact. mark

I got pulled off on some other projects and am just now getting back to this. Evidentally, I had spent too much time looking at this last week. When I opened up /etc/passwd, it was specifly the default group for the user to be 500, not 1000 that I thought I saw. I changed this to 1000, and everything works now. sudo 1.6.9 versus sudo 1.7.2 behavioral differences with umask settings

Two servers, each have normal user umask values of 0077 and root umask values on 0022. On the first server (CentOS 5.4 i386) running sudo 1.6.9pl7-5 (from base), here are the results of touching a file as a user, as root and as a user sudoing to root: user: touch file - result is 600 root: touch file - result is 644 user: sudo touch file - result is 644 On the second server (CentOS x86-64) running sudo 1.7.2p1-7 (from updates), here are the results of the same actions: user: touch file - result is 600 root: touch file - result is 644 user: sudo touch file - result is 600 ** this differs ** On the second system, if I downgrade sudo to the base version, it behaves the same as on the first server, so this appears to be sudo version specific rather than an i386 vs x86-64 difference. I have a few dvr's that I am contemplating converting to Zoneminder (don't know any other app) and would prefer to use CentOS over fedora obviously but the only rpm I see exists for Fedora. I don't want the hassle of manually compiling this, as we have our own config mgmt. Anyone using this rpm (srpm recompiled) in CentOS or know of a solution that exists? Thanks! jlc

yesterday, i was demoing how to use ssh-copy-id on centos 5.5 to copy one's public key to another machine and account so you don't need to type the password anymore. i used "ssh-keygen" to create the standard RSA-format files, then checked the man page for ssh-copy-id, which reads: ssh-copy-id [-i [identity_file]] [user@]machine ... If the -i option is given then the identity file (defaults to ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub) is used the above seems to suggest that, as long as i'm happy copying over the default id_rsa.pub file, all i need type is: $ ssh-copy-id -i barney(a)192.168.2.19 /usr/bin/ssh-copy-id: ERROR: No identities found $ clearly, that doesn't work. but if i simply add in the name of the file, it's fine: $ ssh-copy-id -i .ssh/id_rsa.pub barney(a)192.168.2.19 ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ any reason for that? the man page clearly states that that file is the default, but it's obvious i still need to type its name. am i missing something? is the man page wrong? rday -- ======================================================================== Robert P. Has anyone used the hfsutils package? XEN images and XFS don't seem to get along

Hello listmates, It appears that on the second machine in a row (CentOS 5.5, 32 bit) if I am trying to place a VM into a file located in XFS the machine just hangs (the host machine, not the VM). If I place the VM in a raw device or in a file in ext3 all seems to work perfectly. Is that just a coincidence or is there a reason for this madness? Thanks. Boris.

LDAP authentication on a remote server (via ldaps://)

Hello, I have a central repository of users/groups based on OpenLDAP which is working on a remote LAN (servers share users credentials and mount their home directories via NFS). They use non-encrypted ldap restricted to the local network. Now, I have a few servers in our local office and I would like them to authenticate from the remote LDAP server using encryption via ldaps://. (at this stage, without using client-side certificate) I have run a similar command as I did on the remote servers, replacing ldap://localldapserver by ldaps://ldap.mycompany.com: authconfig --enableldap --enableldapauth --enablecache --enablemkhomedir --ldapserver=ldaps://ldap.mycompany.com --enableldaptls --ldapbasedn=dc=mycompany,dc=com --passalgo=sha256 --updateall and I put the CA certificate at the right place. (either explicitly pointing to it TLS_CACERT or downloading it to /etc/openldap/cacerts vi system-configuration-authentication) In all my various tests, ldapsearch -x returns the content of the remote LDAP, so I guess that at least openldap clients are properly configured. But when I try: getent passwd the command hangs. Same when I try to: su - myuser (I also tried configuring with the system-configuration-authentication UI from a box with GNOME, and also tried authconfig without --enableldaptls) So is there anything specific to authentication ldaps: that I should have done? This error sounds familiar. If it is the same problem I've had a couple of times, every time it happens, I forget what it was I did the last time to fix it. :-( After I remember, it seems almost obvious. Assuming you've got the same problem, you need to log into the account remotely, with out a GUI interface, or as another user. See if you have a file ~/.ICEauthority. If it is there, delete it and then try logging in again. I think that is the right file for the problem I've had. I just noticed I had a CentOS 5.3 system that I updated to CentOS 5.5 a few days ago, and I just ran "yum -y update" again to get the latest kernel, and I just noticed it still has the old 2.6.18-128 kernel instead of the new 2.6.18-194.17. What gives? /etc/grub.conf points at 2.6.18-194.17, but when I reboot, 2.6.18-128 comes up. Any suggestions? Hello List, I found these wonderful instruction by Alan Bartlett (thanks Alan) for building a kernel.org kernel that would install on CentOS 5.5. Doing this and moving the resulting .rpm to the target system and doing a rpm -ivh ... works great. Now I am trying to use the same rpm as part of a CentOS respin and the installation fails miserably leaving me with a unbootable system. Using the rescue option I see the following in my install log. EXT4 mount issue

Hi All, When a couple of EXT4 filesystems are mounted in a server I get the message Oct 1 18:49:42 sraid3 kernel: EXT4-fs (sdb): mounted filesystem without journal Oct 1 18:49:42 sraid3 kernel: EXT4-fs (sdc): mounted filesystem without journal in the system logs. My confusion is why are they mounted without a journal? They were both created with mkfs -t ext4 /dev/sdb mkfs -t ext4 /dev/sdc and mounted in "/etc/fstab" with /dev/sdb /sraid3 ext4 defaults 1 2 /dev/sdc /sraid4 ext4 defaults 1 2 both are 11T and so I would prefer as much stability as possible, io performance is not an issue on either device just integrity so I thought the journal would be default and necessary. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. OpenOffice or LibreOffice?

Given that the Document Foundation has now split away from Oracle to continue the development of an independent office suite, do we have any idea which was CentOS and Red Hat are planning to go in this area - OpenOffice or LibreOffice? I know that LibreOffice is not production ready yet - they only have their first beta available, but it's just a matter of (likely a short) time before the split becomes a release. Thanks, Mark

I am the system administrator. I have a system that was built with a default install which resulted in everything in a single file system except for /boot wrote some scripts to split out: /home, /usr, /var, /opt, and /tmp to separate file systems/logical volumes it looks like it ought to work, There's plenty of space in all the filesystems and I can log via ssh and have write access in my home directory. Logging in via ssh did result in a new .Xauthority file being automatically created, but that did not help. Googleing around I saw a thread where the user was actually out of disk space, but before that was established somebody asked if /home was on a different filesystem from /, but what to do in that case never came up. Another google thread suggested looking in .xsession-errors, but I don't have one. I've found irrelevant ubuntu suggestions regarding ubuntu only packages. Hi Brent, Thanks for the reply. I have to make a decision yes, it is not an easy one either, I read have so many different reports, opinions that I now feel my brain has become rather scrambled.. Wondering now if I should just have smaller filesystems and stick with EXT3.. I have never used XFS and have therefore no experience with it and this I guess leaves me short of confidence. Crontab problem

Hi, I seem to have a problem with crontab. I am running CentOS 5.5. If I add my bakup scripts into crontab they take very long to run. If I run my scripts manually they run 100%. I have also tried vixiecron, same issue. Any ideas? Thanks Jenny

Python resource module returns just zeros

I'm using a call to the resource module's getrusage method. On openSUSE this works, on CentOS [python26-2.6.5-3.el5] it 'works' but just returns zeros for the memory utilization values. resource.getrusage(resource.RUSAGE_SELF).ru_maxrss openSUSE: returns 5512 CentOS: returns 0 Anyone know what condition causes this? Format details for a raid partition....

So I have been playing with a RAID 10 f2 ( 2 disks far layout) setup...thanks for all of the advice..Now I am playing with the format and want to make sure I have it setup the best that I can, my raid was built using the raid 10 option with 2 disks with the layout=far, chunk size 512....now I read all of the docs I could find about format and stride and stripe size and this is what i came up with... mkfs -t ext4 -E stride=128,stripe-width=32 /dev/md0 Someone let meknow if this looks right, but since i only have two disks to get my stride 512/4k=128 and then to get my stripe 2/2*128/4=32 Does that look right and if not let me know but more important how to obtain the right number so I can do it correctly in the future...Thanks.

sata AHCI controllers (real and virtual)

I saw something somewhere about AHCI support requiring kernel 2.6.19 or later. But the current CentOS/RHEL stable kernels are 2.6.18 I'm trying to run CentOS/RHEL in a VirtualBox vm, which by default creates sata virtual disks with an AHCI virtual controller. These virtual machines are quite unstable, and I'm wondering if the AHCI virtual controller is the problem. I do have a real physical AHCI controller and I'm wondering if I should try it on a CentOS/RHEL 5.5 box, or if I should wait for RHEL/CentOS 6, before even attempting it. -- Drew Einhorn "You can see a lot by just looking." -- Yogi Berra

best filesystem for a webserver

Dear all, i'm setting up a new machine to handle a webserver with mysql web directory contains alot of small files and database is around 15 GB i've did a bit research, read alot of articles.. mainly i came up with the understanding that: EXT3 is the set it and forget it kind of filesystem. and reiserFS is the best choice for small files though there's a bigger risk of data loss upon power failure (better solved in ext3) any advice on this matter? or any other filesystem you advise me to use on a production system? thanks

I am attempting to learn how to build my own rpms. I found a good tutorial online but it is a bit out of date (2007). Can't login after installing Centos 5.5

I've done a clean install of Centos 5.5, largely using the default options. Those I changed were: * Changed to KDE Desktop * Added Samba and NFS4 to firewall * Changed NTP servers to those of my ISP When Centos boots what I think is a progress bar shows no progress but eventually (probably about the right amount of time for booting the OS) the user login screen partially appears (username and box, time and name of machine, a flowing "tree" symbol), but the bottom of the screen does not appear to be completed. This login screen clears and redisplays several times. Finally the screen locks with the time displayed in much exaggerated height (about a quarter of the screen height) and nothing more works. At no point can I get to a text login screen (Ctrl-Alt-F1) so I can't even debug it! Can anyone suggest what is wrong or how to overcome it?

Among those reforms include a low-profile copyright proposal with bipartisan, almost unanimous support that just so happens to include censoring whole websites included on a government-run blacklist. The *Combating Online Infringements and Counterfeits Act*(COICA) will blacklist sites that are “dedicated to infringing activities” regardless of where the site is hosted, with exceptions for commercially-oriented sites but not political speech. Originally planned as two blacklists, one controlled by the courts and one by the US Attorney General, the latter was dropped from the bill yesterday after ISPs raised early complaints. Patching openssl rpms

Running CentOS release 5.5. I'm trying to update or patch an SRPMS file, specifically openssl-0.9.8e-12.el5_4.6.src.rpm. Basically, I'm trying to change one line in the source, in ssl/ssl.h. I create a "diff –u" file called openssl-ssl-h.patch. error when logging into system

Hello everyone, I have a CentOS 5 system. On this system, I used the usermod -n and groupmod -g to change the user id and the group id for a standard, regular user from 500 to 1000. I then ran the following commands (as root), to make sure all the files were changed to match: find / -uid 500 -exec chown 1000 {} \; -- and -- find / -gid 500 -exec chgrp 1000 {} \; Now, whenever I try to login as that regular user, I get the following error: id: can't find name for groupd ID 500 I have checked /etc/passwd and /etc/group and both files are correctly showing 1000 as the user and group ids. I didn't see the id isn't listed in either of the shadow files. All of the files in the user's home directory have the ownership and group set to id 1000. I have rebooted the system to make sure nothing was being stored in memory, with the same results. MegaRAID Storage Manager on CentOS 5.5?

Does anyone have the 'MegaRAID Storage Manager' GUI working on CentOS 5.5? I can run it, but it won't let me log in. The docs state that it requires the local root username and password - but it always rejects this with "Message = Login failed: Invalid username or password!" Thanks James Pearson

I am wanting to use the mkfs.hfsplus as mentioned here http://www.oli.id.au/createosxdmgdiskimagesinlinux but I dont have the command. yum provides "*/mkfs.hfsplus" returns no packages found. Where do I find this command? Thanks. Jerry

Mailman works well for our mailing lists, but the archive is unacceptable - the worst thing is lack of search function. I got one tip for this: 1) emails converted to html format with mhonarc 2) search can be done with htdig Opinions?
