Is there a way to set default paper size for CentOS?

I've been a Debian geek for a long time but for a work project I've started using CentOS recently. In Debian I can set the default paper size to US-Letter for the system using dpkg-reconfigure libpaper1 Is there an equivalent configuration option for CentOS? If not, what configuration files do I need to edit? Thanks! Rick

It has an ancient ATI Rage PCI graphics board, booting into init 3 as it's basically headless. I am definately not a hardware guy (hence the name of my company:-). Does anybody have any suggestions as to what may be causing this? This machine also powered off spontaneously yesterday evening after 10 days of uptime (the previous system in this 4U chassis was running SuSE Linux Enterprise 10, and died of a chipset fan failure after 1,390 days uptime :-). All major components are new, including the power supply. The only old component other than the 4U California PC chassis is the original HD with its partitions mounted read-only to get the original data. Any suggestions? To get the server working again I reinstalled the previous version of openssh and the service came up without complaint. cd /tmp; rpm -i openssh-4.3p2-41.el5.i386.rpm --force --nodeps cd /tmp; rpm -iv openssh-server-4.3p2-41.el5.i386.rpm --force --nodeps cd /tmp; rpm -iv openssh-clients-4.3p2-41.el5.i386.rpm --force --nodeps cd /tmp; rpm -iv openssh-askpass-4.3p2-41.el5.i386.rpm --force --nodeps Lacking a session terminal window on that sever I used the command shell module of webmin to execute these commands after using its upload and download module to obtain the rpms from http://mirror.centos.org/centos/5.5/os/i386/CentOS/ I tried to report this problem to CentOS as a bug but the bug reporting service did not recognize my user id and password, notwithstanding I was logged into centos.org itself at the time. -- *** E-Mail is NOT a SECURE channel *** James B. vgrename, lvrename

Hi, I want to rename some volume groups and logical volumes. I was not surprised when it would not let me rename active volumes. So I booted up the system using the CentOS 5.5 LiveCD, but the LiveCD makes the logical volumes browsable using Nautilus, so they are still active and I can't rename them. Tried: /usr/sbin/lvchange -a n VolGroup00/LogVol00 but it still says: LV VolGroup00/LogVol00 in use: not deactivating Did some googling and found out that other folks have had problems with mkinitrd, but I haven't gotten that far yet. Made a wild guess and killed my nautilus process, a lot of stuff disappeared from the desktop, then reappeared along with a new nautilus process. Network cards not recognised

Hi, We have a HP DL385 G6 server that is having an issue. Two of the 4 network cards are not being recognised by Linux. We have quite a few other servers with the same hardware and no issues but, before I call HP, I would like to make sure that I am not doing anything wrong :) I have tried with the kernel that came with CentOS 5.5 and the updated one kernel-2.6.18-194.11.3. OT: sendmail access

Hi all, I know, its normally a sendmail question (sendmail mailing list). But I don't want to subscribe me for this only one question. I hope, here are also many sendmail freaks ;-) many Thanks. Now my problem. We are running sendmail-8.13.8-8.el5 on a CentOS release 5.5 (Final) Box. We have to setup relaying for a person, which is connected to the internet with a dailup connection. So every x days the IP and the hostname will change. Is there a solution how to set up /etc/mail/access to relay there Emails permanent (maybe: FQDN from the 'mail from' domain, which is permantly - <ourdomain>.at?) Configure our access file with wildcards (IP: xxx.xxx.) is to insecure for us. At the moment, after there IP was changed, I also have to change the access file. Or is there another way to fix my problem. pop3 before smtp (our client fetches there emails with POP3s) isn't an option for us. many, many thanks Richard

Traffic shaping on CentOS

I've been trying to do traffic shaping on one of my public servers and after reading up, it seems like the way to do so is via tc/htb. However, most of the documentation seems at least half a decade old with nothing new recently. Furthermore, trying to get documentation on tc filters turned up a blank. man tc refers to a tc-filters (8) but trying to man that gives a no such page/section error. Googling on this seems to imply that the documentation was never created. The author also seems to have stop updating his blog/company site since 2007 based on the last login date on netherlabs.nl So I'm wondering is tc the current and recommended method for traffic shaping on CentOS or is there some newer method that has superceded it?

Every few days I see in the logwatch on my Centos-5.5 web-server what seems like a rather feeble break-in attempt. Eg today I see --------------------------- 403 Forbidden /phpMyAdmin/scripts/setup.php: 2 Time(s) /phpmyadmin/scripts/setup.php: 2 Time(s) 404 Not Found /PMA2005/scripts/setup.php: 1 Time(s) /TRAD_files/datestamp.js: 1 Time(s) ... --------------------------- followed by dozens of similar lines. As far as I can see, the IP of the person making the attempt (if there was an attempt) is not given. I'm not at all sure what if anything I should do about this. In fact, I'm not clear how one should deal with logwatch entries in general. Shutdown CentOS VM when closing VMWare Workstation

Hello, I'm using CentOS 5.5 / 16bit as a virtual machine in VMWare Workstation and have installed the "VMWare Tools" by running vmware-install.pl and vmware-config-tools.pl but can't figure out how to make the VM shutdown, when I shutdown the Windows PC hosting it. Does anybody please have any hints or scripts? Do I need to use any VMWare modules if I just want to shutdown the VM? One of the modules we use is a 3rd party tool that generates an html report which equates to one of the pages on the report that's then delivered to the customer. I have a font bundle I need to use (which is not provided in an RPM that I can find), but metafont does not seem to be available. tetex provides the /usr/share/texmf/metafont directory structure, but not a */bin/metafont... Anyone Having Any Luck Downloaing the DVD ISO?

I've been trying for 2 weeks to download the dvd iso torrent... Shows a ton of seeders, few leechers, but very poor performance.. (I'm correctly setup for torrents and get fast downloads normally) Only like 4% downloaded and crawling. I've tried the trackers from every one of the mirror sites. I can't use the net install because the systems I am installing are on a closed network. Anyone have any ideas where else to get this or any suggestions? Thx, R

Wrapper package / yum repository

Hi, I am setting up a yum repository for our applications and I am having a bit of trouble. I copy the files to a webserver, run createrepo and then configure the servers to use it. One of the RPMs is a "release" package that includes exact versions of all the binary and configuration files as dependencies so we can do "packaged releases" and, if we want to revert to a previous version, we can force it by installing this package (and the yum-downgrade plugin). The issue I am having is that RPM/yum seems to be unable to correctly resolve the dependencies: If I do "yum install adm-release" I get errors about lots of missing dependencies. I installed the rpmforge version some time ago before epel had it and now it looks like there are some conflicts in dependencies. Update to base release

Hello All, We have some machines running CentOS 4 Update 4 (4.4). We want to update these boxes to the stock CentOS 4 Update 8 (4.8). We have the 4.8 iso images. Is it possible to use up2date and have it use the 4.8 mounted iso images on a remote (install) server as the repository? The ISO's are accessible through http. These servers are remote with no CD/DVD option to upgrade that way. I have tried to Google this but can't seem to quite hit what I need. I found one that shows up2date-config GUI setup but I do not have X running on this server and do not want to screw up the config with the CLI version of it. We need to go to stock versions to match our production RHEL 4.8 machines. Thanks, John -- John Kennedy

Hi all, I have a Centos server exporting a filesystem via NFSv4 and from my Ubuntu desktop I can mount it specifying the nfs version as 4 fine and read/write data. >From another Centos system trying to mount this exported filesystem results in "mount.nfs4: Cannot allocate memory" every time. Been banging my head against the wall for a while now... Anyone have any ideas? James

Suggestion on Share folder

Hi all, I need some advise on how best manage a share folder. We have a 2TB samba share. Inside there is individual user sub-folder, and also there are team's folders. We use one shared account for all users. The problem is: The user abuse the space usage. My thought: - Implement quota for each user. - But the implication is each user must have their own account and this potentially gives additional hassle when someone forgets the password. Anyone has similar experience? Much appreciated for the thoughts. Thank you.

trouble mounting NFS share in net install

I am trying to install the net install version of 5.5 from an NFS share that I setup with freenas. I have fully functioning DNS (hosted on freebsd) and can mount the iso share on another centos box with the command mount nas.mydomain.com:/mnt/iso1 /mnt/iso1 on that machine. The nas host in question is a freenas which I believe is NFS 4. I can / will verify if someone would care to respond to this thread. but when I go to do the same thing in the centos net install I get an error stating simply: "that directory cannot be mounted from the server". in the settings I have the following values: NFS server name: nas.example.com CentOS directory: /mnt/iso1 NFS mount options (optional): I have also tried it by ip just to be sure: NFS server name: 192.168.1.250 CentOS directory: /mnt/iso1 NFS mount options (optional): Does anyone have any suggestions that can help me get going? How to Retain Ownership on webdir

Hi, I have this webroot /webdir/ with 2775 permission so that any created file/directory by apache inside of /webdir/ will be 'users:webusers'. However, I noticed when the apache created a new files (fileB) / directories (dirB), the ownership becomes 'apache:apache' and the sgid has gone for /webdir/ (drwxrwxr-x). I'm currently using Wordpress. [before] drwxrwsr-x users webusers /webdir/ drwxrwsr-x users webusers /webdir/dirA -rw-rw-r-- users webusers /webdir/fileA [after] drwxrwxr-x users webusers /webdir/ drwxrwxr-x apache apache /webdir/dirB -rw-rw-r-- apache apache /webdir/fileB Why the sgid bit doesn't reflected and the group as well? Alternatives to checkinstall?

I am reviewing some work that I did in June and forgot to take notes at the time. For some reason I have a nagging suspicion that for this job I used a package builder other than checkinstall but for the life of me I cannot recall the name. Now, the case may be that I actually did use checkinstall in which case not remembering the name of non-extant software is expected. On the other hand I would like to remove any doubts on the matter. If any of you have suggestions for viable alternatives to checkinstall for installing source packages on CentOS-5 as rpms then I would be much obliged. Hi, I'm totally new with centos...we have a cluster in our labo with centos oscar. The gcc which was provided with the release is gcc41 and gfortran41. There are packages for gcc44 and gfortran44. I have installed them. But the gcc is not a link to gcc41 or gcc44. it is just an executable. idem for gfortran. So which is the good way on centOS to choose the gcc44 and gfortran44 per default. CentOS or other Linux Internet Router/Gateway

Hi Everyone, I've got kids who are growing older and I want to build a Linux box to filter Internet access. I've got six computers on the Internet, plus the laptops -- most run Windows. I'm not sure if it's called a router or gateway or...? I don't mind doing the leg work, I just don't know where to start. I'm pretty sure I'm *not* looking for a web server (though it might be fun to have a local web) -- I might also use the computer for a file server, but I mostly want a... proxy server? Not sure what tool I need to use. I seem to remember there were specialty Linux distributions for this purpose. Once I do figure out what kind of box I'm building, would I still be able to put my Linksys router behind it, or would the Linux box *be* the router? -- and would I have to get a wireless switch instead? Would a Pentium III handle this duty, or would it gum up the works and make the Internet too slow? Sorry for stupid questions. At some point I'm going to have to learn about Linux servers. Questions: 1) Are the newer perl packages from rpmforge compatible with the installed base perl packages? 2) What other implications should I be looking for if I try this (other than the obvious caveat about other rpmforge rpms breaking other base rpms)? statd random port - sysconfig/nfs not taking effect

I have changed /etc/sysconfig/nfs to specify port numbers for NFS daemons. Somehow statd is still starting up at random port number. Other damons are starting at properly at specified port numbers Any clues on what might be wrong? Any other location/setting that takes precedence over sysconfig/nfs ? PAM_shield locking me out?

Yesterday I installed pam_shield and followed the testing suggested and thought all was well. today I find that I cannot get to my email account, I can login via ssh okay (uses keys) but su and sudo give segmentation faults. I am guessing due to the pam module causing a problem. As I cannot do remote login as root and sudo and su use pam I appear to have locked myself out. Any words of wisdom from those a little more knowledgeable? Why do I keep trying new things - I like to improve my system and harden it against constant script kiddies (many different triers per day), but despite reading all the instructions I fall into a hole I cannot climb out of. Hopefully someone has an idea BTW - the console also fails to allow login TIA Rob

Automatically detecting LUNs without a reboot

Hi everybody. I have an HP StorageWorks array connected to one of my servers, connected via an LSI controller (lspci reports: SCSI storage controller: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic SAS1068E PCI-Express Fusion-MPT SAS (rev 08)) on an HP DL385 running CentOS 5.5 x86_64. I have set up multipath and all is working but, when I create a snaphost and export it as a new LUN from the HP web interface, it does not appear as a new disk. If I reboot, I get the LUN to appear as a new SCSI device (sd[a-z]). Is there any way I can force automatic detection? One of the reasons to use snapshots is to be able to back up the system without downtime, so not being able to detect the LUNs makes the whole set up a bit pointless. I have tried kudzu, the rescan-scsi-bus.sh script and everything else I have found online, with no luck. The LSI tools only seem to be available for i386, and I would like to avoid adding the 32bit environment, if I can. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Gabriel Tabares

Hi, I am having problem in configuring iptables for PostgreSQL server. Centos 5.5, not booting latest kernel but older one instead

I've been going along not noticing things happening right under my nose. so imagine my surprise when I discovered last night that my Centos 5 box has installed multiple new kernels over the last few months, as updates come out, and IT IS NOT BOOTING THE NEWST ONE. grub.conf says to boot kernel 0, and 0 is the newest one. but the one it actually boots is 6 or 8 down the list (clearly I've not been keeping things cleaned up, either). korganizer missing alarms

Korganizer has been working fine for years for me. But just recently it's started missing alarms... I mean I set an alarm for an event but the window for it is never popped. I googled around and found that other were having this problem back in 2007 and 2005, but there's no mention of it in recent months. OpenVPN throughput

Hello listmates, We are working on setting up two private networks linked by a public network which is fast (1 Gbit/s) but potentially insecure. Since the hosts on our two networks need to talk to each other, and do so securely, we have decided to use OpenVPN to connect them, making one gateway a server and the other a client. The connectivity part was easy to establish and worked like a charm. The only problem was, and is, performance. We have two old PIII-class machines that are being tested for the role of the gateways. We have put new 1 Gbit NIC's in them and they work find for everything (data transmission, DHCP, DNS, routing) except the VPN. When traffic goes through the VPN the OpenVPN process goes to 99% CPU on the server, about 70% CPU on the client and the effective transmission rate goes down to about 6 MB/s whereas in non-VPN mode it can be as high as 50+ MB/s (the top for the 1 Gbit/s is, obviously, 125 MB/s hence with the VPN we are down to about 5% of the capacity). While this may be usable we would like to hope we can do better. Hence the following questions: 1) Have you used OpenVPN in a similar setup? 2) If so what sort of performance did you see? 3) What kind of equipment did you use? Personally, I'd like to hope that if we find VPN-enabled gateways with more processing power we'd get drastically better performance. So if you have data to confirm or deny that please share it. kvm boot options

It did not seem to work as it booted from CDROM (d) the second time around and was wanting to re-install centos again. 1st boot installs centos and auto reboots 2nd boot then begins OTHER things to do. Freezing gnome terminals...

Hi, just wondering if you also experience gnome terminals freezing after a while...? It mainly happens over the week-end. I would leave a terminal open (with an ssh session to a remote site), come back on monday and type a few commands and it jwould just freeze. But it also happen from time to time randomly during the day (but still with days old terminals). Happens to my collegues too. The Gnome terminal Reset option would not do anything. any idea what could be the problem? Thx, JD

Slow domain resolution problem

Hi everyone, I've just joine the list as I am having an issue with our CentOS servers. The domain resolution is extremely slow from the application but doing an nslookup gives an immediate response. All the applications have the same issue, as do all the servers. I have been looking for the solution all over the web and all I have found are references to disabling ipv6. - By setting enable_ipv6 = no in /etc/sysconfig/network, which is already done on all the machines. - By blacklisting the ip6 module, which is not an option as it is used by the bonding module. Just for the sake of it, I tried it and, as expected, the bonding module did not come back up. If bad comes to worse, I could set up host entries for the main machines in /etc/hosts, but I really am trying to avoid that. Any suggestions? Thanks Gabriel Tabares

We have about 20 web servers running (some virtual and some physical), and we are trying to come up with a tool that will assist setting up new boxes as we bring them online, as well as maintaining existing systems when changes are necessary. After spending a little bit of time searching around today, I have run across 2 that seem like good options, cfengine and puppet. Does anyone have any thoughts about either of these tools? Is there definite advantage to using one over the other from your experience? Greetings Folks, I am after any recommendations or experiences using Label printers to print barcodes with CentOS, we currently using Star TSP700's but they're not clear enough for the scanners we have. There seems to be plenty of choice but not much Linux support going on, 'Never had anyone ask for Linux drivers before..' seems to be the most common answer when trying to buy. I have also tried a Brother P-Touch QL-550 but can't seem to get that to print at all using the Foomatic drivers available online. TIA Colin.

Hi All, I have had a thread about this going on the phpMyAdmin list for a little while. Nobody there has been able to shed any light on my problem. It seems that with phpMyAdmin I can not connect to remote servers. Though it also seems that apache, php and mysqli all work fine outside of phpMyAdmin. Below I have detailed my trouble shooting. This only seems to be an issue for me with CentOS 5 so I'm hoping someone out there has run into this before. I'm certain there is some setting or dependency I am missing so if you have any insight into this I'd greatly appreciate it. We have CentOS 5.5 production systems with a major Cloud VM vendor and I have replicated the results with CentOS 5.5 on local VM's (ISO install) with my own VM platform. The remote database server is listening on eth1. eth0 is our public routable IP and eth1 is our 10.x.x.x private subnet. We do not expose the mysql servers on the public interfaces. All of our web applications access the database servers by IP on the 10.x.x.x subnet on eth1. The apache server where phpmyadmin is installed also has other virtual hosts that have wordpress instances among other things, that use the mysqli interface to connect to the same remote database server and they all work fine. The apache server also has a local mysql server that I can successfully connect phpmyadmin to using localhost or 127.0.0.1 for the db host name with cookie authentication. The apache server where phpmyadmin is installed I can use the bash mysql client and connect to the remote database server with my credentials. I have tested CentOS 5.5 with RPM installed httpd and RPM installed PHP 5.1 and PMA 2.x, and CentOS 5.5 RPM installed Apache, my compiled PHP 5.2.3 and PMA 3.x. Both with the same result. Logins to any remote server over TCP with cookie auth fail with a "#1045 Cannot log in to the MySQL server" and tcpdump shows no packets on the interface to the DB server. Connections to the local database server via PMA 3.x, my compiled php 5.2 over tcp using localhost, port 3306, cookie auth connects right away. Connections to the local database server via PMA "mysqli://localhost:3306" shows no traffic in tcpdump on lo, eth0 or eth1 so I'm assuming it uses the local socket for this. I have tested Ubuntu 10 with Apt installed php, apache, mysqladmin and it all works out of the box. I would love to just throw ubuntu up there but work won't allow a mixed linux environment. It HAS to be CentOS. Just to make sure I am not crazy I made the test file below and connected to my remote database from the same virtualhost as phpmyadmin using the same username and password (not root). It works perfectly and I get the results from my mysql.user table. ATI, Catalyst and a new kernel

Please bear with me for a really stupid question... I have a Radeon HD 4550 video card and currently run the Catalyst driver, fglrx_6_9_0-8.741-1. If anyone wonders why I don't simply stick with the generic driver, the fglrx driver makes a WORLD of difference with Googleearth. Thanks!

Hi folks, Anyone know the whereabouts of libgtkembedmoz.so()(64bit) as it is needed by miro-1.0-1.el5.rf.x86_64 (rpmforge) I tried a whatprovides and have looked at epel as well as rpmforge - no luck. Backing up pass words

I am currently running CentOS 4 and want to install CentOS 5. To do that, I plan to install a new HD in my server box onto which CentOS will be installed. I will then copy the "home" directory from the old drive or from a backup on a USB drive, however I am not sure how to handle the Users/Passwords from the old installation. Many thanks... Set default file/dir permissions?

Greetings all- I have a system running CentOS 5.5 x86_64. It's serving NFS for several 'frontend' boxes in a web application setup. All data is stored in specific dir but written by different users. When the webapp attempts to read this information, it may or may not have permissions to this data. What I'd like to do is set 'default permissions' on the data storage directory (lets call this /var/appdata) so that any file or directory created under this is assigned a default set of permissions, and if possible, ownership. I've looked at and tested umask but it only seems to allow/disallow specific permissions, not force permissions. Am I missing something? Is oprofile still working?

Hi all, Is anyone using oprofile? I'm getting segfaults from opreport at the moment, and I'm not sure if it is opreport, or just me. In case it is something just plain daft I am doing, here is how it goes: opcontrol --reset opcontrol --setup --no-vmlinux opcontrol --start ... now I run my program, /tmp/myprog ... opcontrol --dump opcontrol --shutdown then I run, opreport -l /tmp/myprog and get: warning: [vdso] (tgid:4780 range:0x8d7000-0x8d8000) could not be found. warning: [vdso] (tgid:4784 range:0x860000-0x861000) could not be found. CPU: Core Solo / Duo, speed 1067 MHz (estimated) Counted CPU_CLK_UNHALTED events (Unhalted clock cycles) with a unit mask of 0x00 (Unhalted core cycles) count 100000 Segmentation fault The problem seems to come when I ask for symbols (-l). I can't seem to get much information out of other running programs either. I'm running the opcontrol commands as root, and I've tried opreport as root or myself. I'm sure I have done this successfully in the past (but this is the first time I have tried it in a while). I have what should be a fully patched CentOS 5.5 here. I see this: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=529028 , but it looks to be too old to be relevant (I notice I have the updated binutils that the final link in the bugreport points to). I've tried this on two different machines, but they are similar configurations I guess in that they are both 32bit intel machines. Hywel.

CENTOS DHCP Server and windows computer/host name ISSUE

Hi list, We are running few Centos5.4 and windows 2003 instance on CENTOS XEN virtualized environment , all the guest are getting the IP/NETWORK/GATEWAY setting from the DHCP Server running on CENTOS 5 server and the DNS configured on the windows 2003 server. All of the CENTOS Guests are getting the IP and the host name as per the DNS forward look up configured. For example If the CENTOS guest1 get x.y.z.1 as an IP and it gets the host name as machine1.example.com and so on . But none of the windows guest is getting the hostname or computer name from the DHCP server even though its getting the ip from the centos DHCP server properly , instead all the windows guest are setting up the hostname or computername as ORGNAME-withsomenumbers . eg: techsoft-342156 as a computer name . See at present we are not doing any static mapping of IP/HOSTNAME based on windows GUEST MAC address. So statically mapping the hostname/ip with guest MAC address is out of question now. Is there is any configuration to be tuned on dhcpd.conf or any files or parameter to be tuned on windows 2003 guests to get the hostname from the DHCP/DNS . i heard about some option like "*dhcpd opt 12*" on windows regisrty level will do the job , But am blank how to get things done . Also is there is a way to tune CENTOS DHCP Server to lease the ip to the dhcp client in uniform order rather it leases randomly . If any one throws me some light on how to get this done it will be really great full for me . Regards, Lingu

Help with Linux offline cached credentials on a Windows domain

I have modified the native config files both Ubuntu and CentOS systems (laptops) to allow them to be added to a genuine Windows Active Directory domain. When on the network logins work fine. Take the systems off the network, and the user, even though their credentials are cached, cannot log in. There are several documented bugs on this for both Ubuntu and RedHat. Some people have posted various fixes. I tried one, the user was able to log in offline, but then could no longer log back into the network. Insights would be most appreciated. I plan to set up a test system to try various of fixes until I either a) find something that works; b) determine the problem still needs fixing with no known good solution yet found. Thanks. Scott

Updates offered annoyance

Hi all, I downloaded latest CentOS 5.5 DVD i386 image from one of FTP's in a list. I've burned that image to DVD and created new DVD to use for fresh installations. Now when I install fresh CentOS 5.5 (in VM) I am getting info that there are 50 packages updates. This is ok when I have good internet speed (@work) but when I am home, this update takes a lot of time. I guess I can skip updates but I wasn't experiencing such annoyance with CentOS 5.4. My gues is that when CentOS 5.4 was finalized there is no updates to that DVD. Is there any suggestions ? -- Aleksandar dipl. ing. System beeps in kernel 2.6.18-194

So, just today I noticed a problem with kernel 2.6.18-194 (CentOS 5.5) on several Intel DP965LT systems; the system beeps (such as terminal beeps) are no longer passed through to the external speakers. This is a problem because in our situation the boxes are distant from their monitor/keyboard, the system speaker on this motherboard is extremely weak, and there are no system speaker header pins on the motherboard. The problem goes away if I revert the system to 2.6.18-164 with no other changes. I looked through the list archives and searched the web for other people who have encountered this, but it's pretty specific (and hard to search for "system beep"!) Is there someplace can I find *detailed* release notes on the differences between -164 and -194 kernels to help in looking for the problem, pinning it down, and submitting a patch (and/or building my own kernel), or should I just download the SRPMS and dig in? i can't install centos on my poweredge 2950

hi i m trying to install centos5 on my poweredge 2950 with no luck. the raid controler is LSI Logic / Symbios Logic MegaRAID SAS 1078 (rev 04) indeed all is going fine during the installation but when i reboot the server panic the first error i got is this one error mounting /dev/root on /sysroot as ext3: block device required it seems that it can't find the /dev/root devices. but when i boot in rescue mode the / partition is found without any problem. i can chroot in it i have tried with 5.5 and 5.4 x86_64 but i always got the problem. i m really stuck with that :( Does someone has an idea of what could happened?

Dovecot attack

It seems there was some kind of attack against dovecot on my server (CentOS-5.5) with a hundred or so logwatch entries like: ========================================= **Unmatched Entries** dovecot-auth: pam_succeed_if(dovecot:auth): error retrieving information about user admin dovecot-auth: pam_succeed_if(dovecot:auth): error retrieving information about user webmaster ========================================= I googled for this, and it seems quite a common occurrence. Basically, I'm wondering whether this is best met at the dovecot level, or at my firewall? aide rpm requirement

I normally don't have yum upgrade anything automatically, but a server that I didn't set up does just that. Last night, aide was upgraded, and then failed to run due to "libgcrypt mismatch". Shouldn't the rpm spec file for aide deal with the libgcrypt problem (meaning I think it should be part of the requirements to upgrade libgcrypt whenever aide is upgraded as some sort of dependancy)? Need tip on an inexpensive printer for college student using CentOS 5.5

Sending my son back to college with a dual-boot laptop with Win 7 and CentOS 5.5. He uses Win7 to manage his iPod and SW that sometimes issued by a professor for a specific course...otherwise he uses CentOS for everything else. That setup worked well last year, except for printing. He has a low-end Cannon printer that is not supported in the Linux realm. Most of his coursework was uploaded to "Blackboard" and rarely did he have to print anything. On the rare occasion when he had to print a paper/briefing, his work-around was to build the paper/briefing in OO, save in Office 2003 format on a USB drive, boot to Win7, load in MS Office and print to the Cannon printer. I'm looking to clean that mess up for him before sending him back to school. Looking to buy an inexpensive printer he can use on both sides of this laptop. Any suggestions? Dave M
