CentOS 5.5 flex == Fedora 6 flex ?

Is CentOS 5.5 Flex the same as Fedora 6 flex ? Have you seen the package name ? Find this because I need to update my CentOS 5.5 flex for compiling new wine 1.2....but that is another problem.... I have a question about the 389 ds

Hi ,all : I am a newbie to here and I also install the 389 ds in our company for managering all users account and passwd . Today , The boss asked me if the ds could set the users vnc screen geometry in the config file . Because the user's computer screen is not the same and have different geometries. If it could , then we were happy that can solve the user's vnc problem . Then , I try to search it via Googling , but have not search the useful information about it yet . I know we can use the ds to set the uid or home directory and so on , can the 389 ds do it ?Or maybe add some atrributes ? Could someone give me some suggestions about it ? Thanks in advance ~

When I open the screensaver windows in the kde, I find that it is blocked . I switch to the gnome, it is the same. Is it some rpm that I do not install it?

Announce list digest ??

It seems that the past month or so the CentOS Announce list digest has no longer been sent out to the general CentOS list ( this list ) although the CentOS Web site still says that this list is subscribed to the Announce list in digest form. I've been checking, and the announce message does not seem to be getting caught in any spam filter that I use. Have a question , Suppose i had a client tell me that he can access the web page but it takes long time to view the pages the website is a static website ( suppose this website does not server dynamic data or does not connect to a database )... what would one check other than : the server load ( cat /proc/loadaverage ) , the Apache logs , the number of client connection ( netstat -tupln |grep :80 |wc -l ) -- how would i know if it a client side issue or a server side issue ........ -- Regards Agnello D'souza

Dear all, I have a virtual machine with the following specs: Core 2 DUO 3.2 GHZ 4 GB RAM hdd: IDE 320 GB 32 bit OS: centos 5.2 I'm using it for local development with a number of Virtual hosts, and a big mysql database. the prob: At times, with no specific reason. system becomes extremly slugish. http requests takes forever to be served. Even ssh connections takes time to connect, and a simple command such as "clear" takes anywhere between 3 to 10 seconds to execute. i've checked TOP, over and over again and it's always within the following: CPU load average is max 10 % , and at that specific time it's never above 30 % RAM: swap is never used, there's always around 1.5 GB of free memory so it's not a matter of CPU nor RAM. so my next thought were that HDD is maxing out on the hosting physical server. i checked on the physical server, and HDD I/O is within normal range. and other VMs workign on the same physical server are running smoothly.. so what can i do more to troubleshoot? this is happening more than it should without any scenario in common. any advice on how to troubleshoot would be greatly appreciated... PS: any command that may show I/O in KB/MB on the HDD ?

SDA and HDA

With the default settings in my Supermicro motherboard CentOS calls my SATA drive /dev/hda. If in bios setup I change 'Native Mode Operation' from auto to 'Serial ATA' it boots up calling the drive /dev/sda. I keep thinking its likely better under /dev/sda not? Any problem switching it to that after install? Matt

When I do; rexec -a -l username -p password remotehost command i get; Where are you? If I do; rexec -l username -p password localhostname (not just localhost but its actual name) command it works. securing a remotely hosted machine

Hi, I'm looking to put together a doc for the wiki.c.o on howto secure a remotely hosted machine. Its a situation that many of us find ourselves in, wherein we either lease or colo a server ( or many ) and there is always the issue of remote hands, other facility users etc being able to get physical access of the machines. So what are the usual steps that people take in order to secure their remote-hosted-servers. A short list of things that I tend to always do is : - disable all getty's - make grub boot imediately with no user interrupt possible - put sensitive data on a locally encrypted disk - plumb in a bios password - have all console redirected to a iLo / drac / ipmi2 device; if there is one of those - if not then redirect the output to a non-existing ttySX port ( isnt ideal! ) - disable all telnet and http/https access to the ilo / drac interfaces, ensure impi is secured. What other, reasonable, steps should one consider ? the end result, ofcourse, is to still have the option of handing passwords etc to the DC ops should there be a need to actually work on the machine remotely. so removing the keyb and display interfaces might not be desirable. - KB

One quick-and-dirty way to check threads for any process is to use the ncurses-based 'htop' utility. I much prefer this to 'top' for several reasons, including its ability to hide/display kernel threads, hide/display user threads (in a different color if you like), display with vertical and horizontal scrolling, assign processor affinity on the fly, ptrace/strace processes, and a lot more. It's in Dag Wieers' rpmforge repository for CentOS. The suggestions offered in this discussion are all very useful with regard to tuning Apache. Chuck

dual heads, Radeon

Dell OptiPlex 980, Radeon HD 4550 xorg figures it should use the r500 driver. I start with no /etc/X11/xorg.conf. It comes up, mirroring. I use the gnome applet - the same thing, btw, with system-config-display - tell it to use dual head, and spanning desktops. Exit X. Restart, and the second monitor goes into powersave mode. Try to exit X, either via logout, or <ctrl><alt><bkspace>, and it goes, and comes back with a bluish screen... and that's all she wrote. It's hung so hard I can't log in via ssh, and have to power cycle it. Any clues? mark

When I hang-up the system, then the screem is black. But the power light is brightness. and the disk light is bright sometimes. When I press any key, the screem is still black. Only can do is to press down power button for several seconds to power off the notebook. Is there the bug of the Centos?

Load at 5, no CPU I/O or swap in use

We are currently running CentOS 5 update 4 on a Dell R910 server 16 cores/32 hyperthreaded with 64GB of memory. It is our main Oracle 11g DB server for one of our customers and is attached to an MD 3000 storage array. We are having a load averaging around 5 but see no swap in use, CPUs are pretty much idle and no I/O wait. We have Oracle dataguard turned on in transactional mode. I've checked everything that I can think of, there are no Oracle processes running which would cause a spike. Anyone have any ideas as to what to check next? I have another R910 configured the same way and do not see any issues with the 3 databases running on that server. The load is at .5.

can i config/build/boot a new kernel on centos 5.5 with LVM?

(disclaimer: i'll be a bit vague about some of this since i don't have a test system to try to reproduce it until later today or this weekend.) during a RHEL SA course i was teaching this week, i was using both centos 5.5 and RHEL 6.0 beta 2 and, as a fun exercise, i was showing how to "git" checkout the kernel source tree, configure it, build, install and boot to a new kernel. sadly, at no time did that exercise actually work, so i just want to ask a general question -- should i, with a standard install of centos 5.5 with all of the required development packages, be able to checkout the kernel source, and build and boot a new kernel? upon reflection, the issues might have to do with the fact that LVM was in use and perhaps the initrd didn't have LVM support built in but, again, i can't check that until later today at the earliest. so, here's the hypothetical scenario i'm going to test later: * gateway, 64-bit laptop, with 64-bit centos 5.5, fully updated * /boot is primary ext4 partition * / and /home are logical volumes in a single volume group * "git clone" latest kernel source * "make defconfig" * "make" * "make modules_install" * "make install" is there any reason why the above shouldn't work? (and instead of "make defconfig", i can copy the /boot/config file for the stock kernel and "make oldconfig". i'll almost certainly try both just to cover all the possibilities.) so ... should this theoretically work? is there a web page that actually walks through the process? because we were having all kinds of grief just installing the kernel or booting and failing to find the root device (which is why i suspect something LVM-related.) i'm open to suggestions. thanks. rday p.s. obviuosly, i'd love to hear that someone else has already done this and it worked just fine. -- ======================================================================== Robert P. system shutdown - turning off quotas takes a long time

Hi, recently I had to instal a new raid storage system for our central fileserver. It is connected by iscsi (1Gbit) and the fielsystems mounted are 400GB and 1TB and ext3. curretly about 400 GB are used by 1.5 Mio files. I turned quota on and did a quota check. BUT on reboot the system crashes/hangs during 'turning off quotas' This message shows up about 30++ sec after the shutdown ... Any idea? Hint? Suggestion? The storage is an SUN 7110 with SAS drives. Hi ,guys : I reboot my computer which is installed the CentOS 5.4 64 bits just now and find that SCIM service does not start And the error message is these: root@test <root@camlit> ~: tailf /var/log/message xxxx scim-bridge: Another agent is running .. xxx scim-bridge: Failed to allocate the agent . Exitting .... .... .... I also run this command "ps aux |grep scim " to pick up which process use the scim service and kill that , but that problem is as before . Two display cards problem

My Thinkpad notebook has two the same display card. It is installed with Windows XP system and CentOS 5.3. When I reboot from CentOS to xp, the display card driver of windows xp is broken. I guess if the display card is switched in the CentOS? How to let these two system use the same display card?

odd situation slightly off topic (sending file descriptors to another process)

I have coded up the standard sendfd() and recvfd() for linux to send and recv file descriptors. seems to work (http://book.chinaunix.net/special/ebook/addisonWesley/APUE2/0201433079/ch17…) however when I recvfd() my number of open file descriptors bumps by 2 and not 1. (using lsof -p X | wc -l) I am not sure why the count jumps by 2 and not 1. The sendfd() is just sending a socket descriptor. If I close() the provided descriptor it only closes 1 handle (again using lsof above). So my recvfd() is giving me 2 but when I close() I only drop 1 and not 2. Something is not in alignment and just wondering if someone can shed some light on this. Thanks. Jerry

how to setup account which can 'su" to another account (NON-root)?

Power failure diagnosis?

This morning between 07:10 or so and 08:10 I discovered that my PC had shut itself off. I thought it was due to a power failure becuase I never turn it off without a good reason, and it had been running (and playing sounds) until it wasn't. My roommate/landlord tells me that the only anomaly he observed was that our router had lost its internet connection (via a cable modem, which was still running fine), and his computer, a laptop, and clocks all seemed to be running normally. I checked all the logs in /var/log and there's nothing in there other than the restart - no temp warnings or anything. The machine has been up and running smoothly since the last time I shut it off (to move), a week ago last Friday (8/6). I don't have a UPS or BB, so is there any way that I can diagnose this further? Wrong disk size problem.

Hi,we have Centos 5.4 server and according to me we have strange problem. Disk size and other indormation like below.Normally,md2 partition should have 46GB free disk size but available value is zero.Why it show zero ? Is there some easy way to rewrite just the base URL to another URL but leave all other URL's unmolested? i.e. http://www.example.com = rewrite to another URL http://www.example.com/files = deliver from the assigned subdirectory obviously this... Running CentOS 5.5 x86_64 on Dell R710 boxes. I have the server(s) configured for bonding/vlan and will be using iscsi to a SAN. I am in the pre-deployment stage so I am just setting up the basic cookie cutter configurations so I haven't initiated the iscsi connection to a SAN yet. While going through the error messages I noticed this error: kernel: bnx2i: iSCSI not supported, dev=ethX. First time I have seen this error while configuring previous Dell servers, though I noticed most of my older boxes are using the tg3 module for the onboard NIC's. Has anyone run into this error message and if so does it means what it says....iSCSI not supported for the target device? Thanks, David

According to what I was seeing, unlike Debian GNU/Linux, which uses rsyslog, CentOS still uses the traditional syslog where the parameters to be passed to the daemon are taken from /etc/sysconfig/syslog and the default configuration is: SYSLOGD_OPTIONS="-m 0" So, no time stamps are added. As I watched in the man pages for syslog, I tried removing the zero assuming it would take the default of 20 minutes, but I get a error message suggesting to put a numerical value following the "-m". I tried also with "-m 20" and nothing happens. Same result if, besides that, I put in the /etc/syslog.conf: *.info;mail.none;authpriv.none;cron.none,mark.* /var/log/messages ^^^^^^ aggregate Any idea what might be missing? best ways to do mysql backup

we have multiple servers approx 10 and each has about 100 GB of data in the /var/lib/mysql dir , excluding tar , mysqldump and replication how do we take backup for these databases on to a remote machine and store them datewise , ( the remote machine is a 2TB HDD ) currently tar is not feasible as the data is too huge and the same goes with mysqldump suggestion will be of great help -- Regards Agnello D'souza

Yum broken after x86_64 upgrade

Hi All, I just upgraded a machine from CentOS 5.3 32-bit to CentOS 5.5 x86_64 using the updater on the release disk. Now that the machine is running 64-bit, I notice that Yum is broken, failing with the following error: ~~~ There was a problem importing one of the Python modules required to run yum. The error leading to this problem was: /usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/rpm/_rpmmodule.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32 ~~~ OK, so I thought I could fix this by installing the dependency. After digging through a bunch of cascading dependencies using rpm, I got to the elfutils, which didn't want to install until I used the --ignorearch switch on rpm. However, when I try to install the 64-bit version of rpm-libs on top of that, I still get the complaint about the failed dependency on elfutils. My first question is: Would I be better off just wiping the machine and installing from scratch at this point, or is there some sane way to get yum reconstructed? And the second question: did I make a mistake by assuming that the upgrade system would work as it should, or is this just a bug in the upgrade system? And to my first question, does anyone know what else the updater is likely to have broken? Thanks, --Bill

Hi , guys: I have a new Acer laptop and I have installed CentOS 5.5 x86_64 bit. The problem is that there is no driver for the ATI mobility radeon HD5470 and the graphic is so bad! On amd-ati website I have found the catalyst driver version 10.2 butit seems not to be the correct solution. The current screen resolution is 1024x768, but my laptop is widescreen and the best screen resolution is 1366x768. Do you have any suggestion? Thanks in advance .... upgrading storage on hardware RAID 10 possible?

Hi all, Can anyone please tell me, from experience, if it's possible to upgrade the hard drives in a RAID 10 system from 250GB HDD's to 500GB / 750GB HDD's, while the server is running? The server runs CentOS 5.5 x64. Our hardware vendors simply always say no, so we never actually tried doing this, and when a client needed an upgrade like this we had to build a new server with the same spec and larger hard drives and then migrate the data across, which can sometimes take a few days to complete (due to DNS & MAC address caches). So, I'm wondering, is it possible (and safe) to upgrade the existing drives to larger drives in a running server? I know we're done this with Linux's software RAID many times with great success. But I don't want to take a risk if it's not possible. CentOS 5.5 latest revisions seem really slow

I recently updated to OpenOffice 3.2 and I noticed that it, and the latest Evolution, seem to be incredibly slow for some operations. E.g., in OO, about half the time when I'm editing something, it takes anywhere from 10-30 seconds for OO to respond to a click on one of the icons or menu items, and Evo is taking forever to format messages. During these times the gnome-system-monitor icon on my panel is showing almost no activity, and if I expand it to the full window, it shows the same. Is anyone else seeing this? I'm running the x86_64 release on an Athlon II X4, 2.6GHz with 4GB of memory and lots of available space in memory and on disk. Thanks in advance. Mark

Just thought I'd present this problem for comment/help/hints: * want to upgrade from Fedora Core 11 to 13 * I have a 64-bit system with Vista as a host o/s, running VMWare, and FC11 as a client o/s * cloned my FC11 as a backup * ran preupgrade, got expected problem with 200MB /boot, but preupgrade said that it could continue downloading (presumably to the larger partition) so I did * preupgrade told me to reboot, so I did * began upgrade process; ran Test. First oddity: Test said it was testing media for FC10 , but test passed. * Problem#1: after test finished, upgrade wanted me to install a disk. There is no such disk -- preupgrade put the upgrade information mostly into /boot, I presume. * had to shutdown the upgrade process * rebooted (I figured I'd try skipping the test this time) * Problem#2: not running upgrade, instead just does a normal boot into FC11 In inspecting /boot, I see a fair amount of upgrade info there. The help for this indicates that I should be using grub to select the upgrade; there is no grub since FC is running as a virtual machine client. At this point I'm considering downloading FC13, writing DVDs, and doing a new virtual client. I was hoping to avoid all that, especially as my FC11 has never recognized the DVD writer drive, so I'll end up having to do it from another machine. Regards, Chip Campbell

DHCP problem with virtual interfaces

Hello, After asking around in #centos and other linux related IRC channels, here I am, bugging all of you. brace for the long post. (tldr: dhclient loses virtual interface ips) I set up a system to deploy statically assigned IPs to physical and virtual interfaces to a number of (virtual) machines. I have a DHCPD with an entry for each virtual ip in the form of host eth0-1.virt1.test.it { option dhcp-client-identifier "00:50:56:00:84:00-eth0:1"; fixed-address 10.192.52.132; } where 00:50:56:00:84:00 is the physical mac address, but that's irrelevant. on the client machine I got inside sysconfig's system and wrote a custom ifup-local-eth0 that launches one dhclient per virtual interface, like: /sbin/dhclient -1 -q -lf /var/lib/dhclient/dhclient-eth0:1.leases -pf /var/run/dhclient-eth0:1.pid eth0:1 always on the client in dhclient.conf I have entries like: interface "eth0:1" { send dhcp-client-identifier "00:50:56:00:84:00-eth0:1" ; } at service network start everyone is happy, virtual interfaces gets configured and everything works. after a while (hours, days) suddenly _some_ (not alway all of them, sometimes 1 out of 10, sometimes 9 out of 10) of the virtual IPs disappear. in the DHCPD log files I see things like (not the same machine, because on that I didn't have the issue recently): Aug 11 16:39:52 cp1 dhcpd: DHCPREQUEST for 10.192.52.103 from 00:50:56:00:37:00 via eth1 Aug 11 16:39:52 cp1 dhcpd: DHCPACK on 10.192.52.103 to 00:50:56:00:37:00 via eth1 Aug 11 16:39:52 cp1 dhcpd: DHCPREQUEST for 10.192.52.103 from 00:50:56:00:37:00 via eth1: lease 10.192.52.103 unavailable. My guesses are either: a) dhclient doesn't always send dhcp-client-identifier and thus the server can't verify the IP they claim is theirs. why this doesn't happens at every renew I don't know (I tried using very short lease times, and wasn't able to reproduce the issue). b) dhclients steals DHCPOFFER replies from each other, leading the stealing DHCP take charge of the stolen from IP and having its original one fade into oblivion. to work around b) I tried to point the N dhclients to the same lease file, but this still lead to NAKs (albeit not lost IPs) _and_ a strangely looking leases file, with empty lines but apparently no significant corruption. software versions: # dhcpd -V Internet Systems Consortium DHCP Server V3.0.5-RedHat # dhclient -V Internet Systems Consortium DHCP Client V3.0.5-RedHat the problem happened also using DHCP Server 3.0.1 on an older CentOS 4.5 I'm looking for ideas to better pinpoint the problem, alternatives, anything. possible FAQs: Q) do you have dynamic ip pools on the DHCP server? A) yes, but not on this subnet. This subnet only has statically assigned ips, both physical (mapped with MAC addresses) and virtual (mapped with dhcp-client-id Q) do you see IPs assigned on the wrong machine? A) never happened. Q) do service network restart fix the issue? A) yes, always, and yes, temporarily. This makes me think the system is basically right and this may be a bug. Q) do you have network issues? A) no, and this doesn't seem to happen in moments where a network related problem may be likely Q) why don't you use sysconfig virtual interfaces configuration files? A) they doesn't support DHCP, only static IPs Q) did you try building a newer dhclient/dhcpd? A) I built 4.2's dhclient from ISC sources but the pair dhclient/dhclient-script isn't a drop in replacement for CentOS. Q) why don't you use static IPs, if they are static in DHCP? A) I want to be able to reconfigure the networks without editing tons of files on tons of machines. I currently have tens of these VMs deployed and the number is likely to increase alot in the future. The deployment and configuration is automatic using a central configuration. tar - ssh - standard out

Hi I have a process that creates 'some data' and outputs this to standard out and i want to shift this data over ssh to a remote box without ever writing anything locally. I have been experimenting with tar to create the archive as the i dont know what the contents of 'some data' might be so i just need to capture it and output it on the other side. I have been trying with $ tar czf - . | ssh -q 192.168.122.2 "tar xzf -" and this works fine to create an archive of this '.' directory and pipe that over to the other side but i want to take standard out so.... $ tar czf - `the thing that generates standard out here` | ssh -q 192.168.122.2 "tar xzf -" Would that work or is there a better way to get this over to the other side? It needs to be a data stream though so things like scp and rsync are no good and i need to know what the command is on the remote side being run so that i can restrict this in the ssh public key on the remote side. thanks

Problem resizing partition of nfs volume

Hi: I have an NFS volume that I'm trying to resize a partition on. Something about the fdisk process is corrupting something on the drive Before running fdisk, I can mount the volume find: $ mount /dev/sdo1 /home ... and the volume is mounted fine. And, $ e2fsck -f /dev/sdo1 /dev/sdo1: clean, ... But then I run fdisk to rewrite the partition table of this drive, to expand the /dev/sdo1 partition w/o losing data: $ fdisk /dev/sdo # Type 'd' to delete the primary partition # Type 'n' for new partition # Type 'p' for primary # Type '1' for 1st # Type Enter for 1st cylinder # Type Enter for last cylinder (full disk) # Type 'w' to finish Calling ioctl() ... Syncing disks ... But then something has gone wrong. $ e2fsck -f /dev/sdo1 e2fsck 1.39 (29-May-2006) Couldn't find ext2 superblock, trying backup blocks... e2fsck: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sdm1 ... And I can't mount the volume any more: $ mount /dev/sdo1 /home mount: you must specify the filesystem type What am I doing wrong? Am I missing a step of the process? Thanks! Dan

Hi guys, I don't mean to incite debate or something, just want to share experience and a little curiosity. Back long time ago, we have an old file MS W2K (NTFS) server where due no admin was available to manage it, the server would get power off when the office closed, and auto power on again in the morning. That thing happened for years and it was fine ^^ Recently, I setup a Centos 5.5 file server with ext3 and got power blackout twice and I notice the filesystem got corrupted and also bad sectors. Is it just pure random luck, software or hardware issue? What's your experience? Thank you.

problems with yum_priorities on CentOS5/RHEL5

Hello, Many of you will have read this page, with its (somewhat ambiguous) endorsement of yum_priorities: http://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalResources/Repositories/RPMForge As I gather has been stated before on the centos list [1], that quote stops short of outlining what exactly is wrong with yum_priorities (YP) and why it's the best solution. In fact it goes on to say: > as of yet, no real world problems have been reported with regard to the > 'yum-priorities' plugin Some (I hope, constructive) comments which might help users of yum/YP to avoid surprises: - The above statement should be altered, since it obviously isn't true (Judging both from comments in [1] and my own experience in [2]) - Perhaps it could explain how YP works and when it doesn't with an example? (I have one you are welcome to copy in [2].) - Could the above page incorporate, or at least link to the useful information at the bottom of the page here: http://wiki.centos.org/PackageManagement/Yum/Priorities - Could it also mention somewhere quite visible that yum_priorities is not available on RHEL5 so any solutions using YP it will just not work there? I'd also like to know more about why YP cannot be made available on RHEL, but I guess this is not the place to ask. Plus I've noticed a couple of features of yum + YP which aggravate the shortcomings - again this is probably not the place, but I'll mention them anyway, as a heads-up to other users. 1. yum check-updates and yum update do *not* warn you of an impending unresolved dependency caused by YP hiding the required package. It seems the only way to find out is if you go ahead and try and perform the update, which potentially leaves you with one or more broken packages. This seems a serious flaw that should be fixed. 2. Not only do higher priority packages totally eclipse lower priorities, whatever version, but yum_priorities also makes it seem like they aren't even present. When a dependency is eclipsed, yum queries with --showduplicates will tell you there *is* no package which satisfies the missing requirement, making it look like the repository is broken. You have to disable all plugins to get the correct answer: $ yum --showduplicates --noplugins list perl-Archive-Tar Finally, I'd like to ask if there have been any developments, or new advice anyone can offer on the topic, since November 2009? Hi all, Has anyone upgraded OpenOffice.org 3.1.1 on Centos 5.3? Everything seemed fine but I have found 1 problem on Calc. The autofill does not work. Example, when I type "Jan" in cell A5 and drag the handle to cell D5, the Fill Settings dialog box pops up instead of the Feb, Mar, Apr filling in the cell automatically. When OpenOffice.org 3.1.1 from Sun is installed, it works. AFAIK on the 'new' server I do have to launch an LVM-scan command ... after login to the iscsi target. But which LVM-command and syntax was it? Latest BackupPC release in CentOS testing repo

BackupPC released 3.2.0 as a stable version a few weeks ago. The most current release is 3.1.0 in the testing repository. Are there any plans that this will be updated to 3.2.0 in the repo some time down the road? Also, will the BackupPC package be moved out of testing and into extras ever? Or are there reasons behind this that are more complicated, making it not "stable" to be in extras? I've been running the 3.1.0 RPM for a long time with no issues. Just curious. Thanks! Max

sshd bug?

Hi, I've found a bug/problem with my centos 5.5 server. Any users who have a password of 9 characters or more, only the first 9 characters are used by the OS... eg. i set my password to "123456789" and i try logon via ssh with password "123456789ofgjdfuh" - it lets me in. and if i set my password to "qwertasdfGHJB" and i enter "qwertasdfSDWQWSDS" - it lets me in... The 'passwd' command only recognises the first 9 characters too... Has anyone seen this before, or know how to fix it? I feel its a major security risk and would like it fixed ASAP. Thanks, Matt

Forgive me if this does not go with the right topic, I am on digest and responding to a topic sometimes makes it start a new one. My reason for the iptables questions is to not follow the practice of putting up a wall and ignoring hackers. I want to be more proactive. If I have set my ssh port to 55994 and am not using port 22, but hackers are pounding on my port 22 looking for Ssh, then I want to not only know about it, I want to log them and prevent them access to my server and web applications. At least temporarily. I see now that many of the programs are log users and not real time. And many like fail2ban actually add chains to iptables that I Could do myself. It looks like getting some books on netfilter may be the way to go. I would rather stop stuff at the firewall then trust apache, php, sendmail, vsftp, etc. I would rather use them as back up failsafes while I work on hack proofing the single point of entry. I have a server sitting right on the net and the constant barrage of 100s of Ips trying thousands of times at port 22 is insane. I examine my logs and see so much in the way of dns posion attacks, ssh-mail-ftp, etc attacks that I do not want to just sit back and Think I am fine because I have a firewall and centos will send me bug fixes. That firewall seems like the 100% way of going at stopping and preventing issues. If an IP is doing something it should not be doing, most likely you do not want it probing anything else either. That's why I ask.

Iptables questions

Hello, I have read and seen many options for additions to Iptables as a firewall and security system. All seem to react to logs and not to incoming packets (as far as I have seen) I am interested in doing a number of security ideas to the firewall, iptables, on my webserver. If you have a program you would suggest or believe iptables is the proper solution, please feel free to post that. Here are some of the things I would like to do 1) I have switched my SSH to a different port. I would like to still check for anyone trying to hit the old port 22 and log them. At the same time add them to a reject/ban for a certain period of time, lets say 1 day. 2) there are certain apache hacks (like things that include ../) that I would prefer to stop at the firewall. I would also like to log these attempts and begin a reject/ban for a certain period of time. Or just log until I figure out the best way to safely ban. 3) There are common script kiddie hacks that look for certain files 1 million times a day. I would like to either look for them in the incoming packets, log, and ban. Or I would like to be able to use my own php program to route them out and then add to a ban list that iptables can use. These are just some of the things I am looking at doing. I also want to start a ban list for mail packets too, why bog down sendmail when I know what they are? I realize some things might be done via programs like fail2ban (like my php program making a list) but others would be better at the firewall as active reaction security measures. CentOS 5, gnome-screensaver and password amnesia?

I've built some CentOS 5.5 64-bit systems straight off the DVD, full installs, and the Gnome screen lock (manually invoked or automatically via the gnome-screensaver) does not allow the user to unlock the screen. The only fix appears to be ctrl-alt-F<1 - 5> then have the user log into the tty session, type pkill -f gnome-screensaver, log out, then ctrl-alt-f7 to return to X. These systems are standalone, so there is no option to remote in, and the display is never unplugged from the system as some of the RedHat bugzilla reports show. I did try a yum update but the problem persists, so I suspect the issue has not been fixed, or if it has, has not been released via the yum default locations. The screensaver and manual screenlock options must be enabled, so disabling them is not an option. I've also developed a cron job to restart gnome-screensaver every few minutes. I've got other systems, built back when CentOS 5.0 was out, that do not experience this problem. I've built newer systems with CentOS 5.4 and 5.5, yum updates, and I don't think they have experienced the problem either. I _think_ the issue, thus far, appears to be a full install of all packages from the DVD, which is how I build various standalones. Does anyone have an update on when this will officially be fixed? I have CentOS 5.5 however, when attempting to download a distro for use on a virtual machine, which only seems to provide a torrent, I am unable to locate any torrent clients, and yum installation fails for ktorrent. Automounter problem in C5.5?

Last night I was having some bizarre problems with my USB ports. I couldn't access one of my scanners, and when I started moving plugs around, it seemed as though I lost more peripherals. For some reason, I did NOT lose the laser printer, but my one scanner and my scan/fax/printer disappeared and wouldn't come back. I figured it might be the automounter, so I tried plugging in a USB flash drive, and it did not get mounted either. I rebooted and the problem disappeared (duh). Questions: 1) I'm suspected this was an automounter failure - is that the most likely culprit? 2) How do I restart the automounter when it dies, or can I? I've hit this issue before once or twice and only rebooting seems to make it right again. Thanks. Mark

Stuttering sound

Dear List, After some googling around without any results, I'm quite puzzled. Since some past update I can't precise, kernel 2.6.164 works fine, however 2.6.194 has some sound problem in my somewhat old and beaten Toshiba laptop. -Audacious plays OK but other applications have problems. -For instance, mplayer acts quirky: when I pause a playing video, sound keeps stuttering endlessly. The same happens sometimes when I close mplayer window. -system-config-soundcard detects the card and starts to play sample but stuttering all the way, repeating every 4th of a second or so some 16 times, at about a 1/2 second rate. -Youtube has no sound! -Software volume control has been lost long ago, unrelated to this problem but interested in recovery anyway System is fully up to date. Xen machines fail to reboot

Whenever I ask a xen machine on my centos boxes to reboot, they always just shutdown. I control the machines via virtual machine manager, and connect to them using an ssh tunnel, for example, ssh -X user@host and then run virt-manager . This surprises me, because it's only on my centos boxes this happens. How can I find out of this is already a known issue?

Is there a way to find out when it last had to be rebooted before today? uptime gives you no history past the very last reboot, so obviously I need to find some other way to get an answer to my question. Moving users from Debian-based distro to CentOS

I have a Debian machine with four users that I plan on migrating to CentOS. As per Debian habits the UIDs start with 1000. Is it enough to reuse the Debian /etc/shadow and /etc/passwd files over? Or will I need to configure some other things? I had considered just creating four new users starting from UID 500 then chown -R -ing the user's home directories, but I find that invasive and possibly error prone (maybe there are files that are not owned by them). Downgrade libgcc & gcc packages (is there a clean way)

Hello all, I have been tasked with "fixing" one of our CentOS boxes by somehow downgrading the libgcc and gcc packages to a specific version (Required by the Oracle Grid Control client). Normally I'd just remove and reinstall the packages however removing libgcc is no fun as I found out the hard way it breaks pretty much every package including rpm & yum. Is there an elegant way to downgrade the currently installed libgcc & gcc packages? Thanks, Dan

fail2ban behavior

I created a filter and verified it with fail2ban-regex against actual lines in my log and it works. During restarts of fail2ban, only some previous ip's get banned immediately whereas some need a reoccurrence despite the jail's config specification of maxretry and findtime suggesting the entries mandate blocking. I'd assume the behavior after a restart is noe way if it weren't for the seemingly random immediate notification of blocks being different? Anyone with experience using fail2ban know anything about this? Thanks, jlc

more a terminology usage question than anything else, but in a couple of weeks, i'll be teaching the first of a few sessions on RHEL admin and, unsurprisingly, i'll be using centos (as i've done in the past). when i asked the organizer to identify the specific version of RHEL that was being used at the client site, i was told 5.3 so i can easily install 5.3 on the classroom machines, but i'm curious about something and i'll have my contact look into it: if people *initially* install 5.3, is it standard behaviour to still regularly upgrade as new releases come out? obviously, i have to ask my contact to verify what the client has been doing all this time but, in general, what's the normal behaviour for people running centos/rhel? and is there a way to examine an install to see how updated it's been since that original installation? i just don't want to teach off of 5.3, only to find out later that they've been keeping up to date and 5.5 would have been a more appropriate choice. thanks for any tips. rday -- ======================================================================== Robert P. If you have space to create a separate boot partition for GRUB, about 20MB should be plenty. You can create it as an ext3 logical partition, inside an extended partition. That should solve the GRUB Centos issue. You then need to reinstall GRUB to that separate boot partition, otherwise GRUB will still be looking to boot from the MBR of the first drive - if that's where it is now. You can install GRUB to separate boot partition by: Create the separate boot partition, and label it something like GrubBoot, using e2label /dev/sd?? GrubBoot. create the mountpoint; /mnt/GrubBoot ================================================================== ** AutoLinuxInstaller Fedora Installation I have created a seperate Grub boot logical partition, in the extended partition, called GrubBoot /dev/sda13. This enables me to do fresh Linux installations into /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2, without destroying the GrubBoot partition. This option is useful when you want to install GRUB into a separate partition or a removable disk. But for some strange reason, when I re-installed GRUB from Fedora 12, this also allowed Centos 5.5 root partition to boot. Here is what my /mnt/GrubBoot/boot/grub/grub.conf file looks like. I have installed the source rpms on CentOS 5.5 due to virtualbox upgrade not functioning. (the old one that comes with centos works fine, however, I wanted to newer one.) Whenever I run the driver installation script it fails with an indication that it could not find the sources. When should LVM be used?

In my old computer I have a much bigger hard drive then in this one -- and I plan to hand that old computer down to one of my sons -- keeping his current drive from an even older computer. Currently the hard drive on my old computer has SuSE Linux, but that will go. I'll rebuild CentOS 5.5 on it, but I want to leave some free space for whatever comes up and also dual-boot Vector Linux. Which, at last, brings me to the question... Is there any reason to use LVM on a personal desktop install of CentOS? It seems to me, for my purposes, that LVM is just a pain in the neck -- although I've always just let CentOS set it up during the install in the past. I would like to be able to use parted to resize partitions when I want to, and also I'd like Vector Linux to be able to read and write data to the CentOS partition. Would I be missing something by not installing LVM, or is this mostly for server purposes anyhow? Thanks for any pointers. -- RonB -- Using CentOS 5.5

Listee's... I have a 5.5 box and I have formatted a partition as ext4 however I can't mount it, the mount command is telling me its an unknown file system type. fsck tells me the partition is a clean ext4 partition but I can't mount it. Some reasearch has lead me to believe the problem is that ext4 isn't enabled in the kernel by default in 5.5 (this was originally a 5.2 box that has been upgraded over time, its now on 2.6.18). Encrypted remote backup?

Can anyone recommend a commercial off site remote backup service with a client (preferably FOSS) for CentOS 5, preferably that allows encryption of the data being backed up? Small scale, I'm primarily looking to just back up my mail folder on my server. I've been backing it up to local hd via rsync but that drive just died, I'd prefer to have it backed up to somewhere more stable than a home box and automated via cron (cli tools a must), but encryption is important, people are snoopy and I'm paranoid about that sort of stuff.

Remote nautilus, X display forwarding problem

Hi guys, I'm trying to figure out something wherein excluded repositories for the yum-fastestmirror plugin are still being used by the system.
