Hi all, I have problem with my servers. I use two of HP Blade Servers and RHEL 4.6 installed on them, and have IBM DS4700 connected to them. In those servers are running RHCS (Red Hat Cluster Suite) with GFS for handling Oracle Database. Yesterday, I had missing one partition from the storage, suddenly. I called IBM and they suggested to use RDAC. The question is, Why should use IBM RDAC for multipath on RHEL 4, and why HP Blade + HP EVA Storage don't use any addition plugins software to keep server + storage connection? Hi; I want MySQL source rpms pertinent to CentOS 5.4; what packages should I request via yum? I first went to mysql.org but I could not find (perhaps I am blind) any MySQL source tarballs or rpms, only binary rpms. I would like to compile MySQL from source. BTW, what happened to centos.org? When using Firefox or Chrome it looks like it is text-only as if I were visiting it with lynx! Thanks in advance for pointers/advice towards answering a very lame question. Problem with yum

I am experiencing a problem with yum on one of my CentOS-5.5 systems. Specifically, on Friday past (July 16), I ran yum update as root. Yum displayed all of the outdated packages and asked if I wanted to proceed. An answered yes. This first package downloaded was nss. At this point yum simply stopped processing or responding. A ctrl-c at the yum session terminal window did not interrupt the task. Top did not display any yum processes. I killed that particular process to regain the console session, but I had to use -9 because nothing else worked. Yum continues to behave in this strange manner. Any invocation of yum with any option just stops responding. Before I manually remove yum and reinstall it using rpm could anyone provide a clue as to what might be happening here and how it might be cured. I found this one entry from yum in the log files: /var/log/messages.1:Jul 16 00:14:43 gway01 kernel: Out of memory: Killed process 1380, UID 0, (yum-updatesd-he). However, this entry occurred some time before I attempted my update task later that same morning. I would like to be directly copied on any replies as I am a digest subscriber. Finding DHCP IP of guest system

If I can log in to the guest through the console, I can of course find out what IP DHCP has assigned it. If I configure a static IP I can of course connect to the system there (if it runs services, the firewall allows it, all the usual caveats). Does there happen to be any way to determine from dom0 what IPs are participating in the network and which guests they belong to? (I'm configuring everything as bridged; basically I want to use virtualization to pretend I have a bunch of independent systems visible to the outside.) (I suppose just what the IPs are is enough; the number is small enough I could probe them until I found the system I wanted. Xen cpu requirements

I'm installing Centos 5.5 on a new Dell R301 server. I wanted to run Xen and have the full virtualization possibilities (this is our development support server, so it runs a few real services and is available for playing with things; putting the "playing with things" functions into virtual servers would protect the "few real services", and make it easier to clean up afterwards). I have enabled virtualization support in the BIOS. /proc/cpuinfo says I have model name : Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X3450 @ 2.67GHz and flags : fpu tsc msr pae cx8 apic mtrr cmov pat clflush acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss ht syscall nx lm constant_tsc ida pni est ssse3 cx16 sse4_1 sse4_2 popcnt lahf_lm The "vmx" flag doesn't appear to be set. (I'm working from <http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/Virtualization-en-US/ch-op-sys-support.ht…>, by the way; I note that document is from 2007 or maybe even 2006, so perhaps some things aren't fully up-to-date.) xm console -- what should I get?

If I type "xm console 6", say (when I have a virtual machine 6 running), what should I get? The documentation seems to indicate that I should get something that behaves like a telnet to a serial console. What I actually get is a connection that might show me a couple of lines of output that do look like they belonged on the console, but doesn't seem to accept any input (except that it does exit on the documented escape character ^[). These virtual systems show as running, and in fact with virt-viewer I can get a VNC console to them. Paravirtualized Centos 5.5 guest under Xen

The virtualization manual doesn't seem to say; does one have to do anything to get the Centos 5.5 paravirtualization drivers installed? Or is it sufficient to specify a paravirtualized guest, and the Centos install will then detect that and load the right things? And, is there a way to check in the guest that the right drivers are loaded? Re-exporting an NFS mount.. Possible?

I have an issue that is not all that unique, so I'm hoping someone has done it before. On the client end I have some very old RedHat based systems. On the server end is a Windows 2008 system running NFS server software. The clients mount the server resource as an NFS2 mount but some compliance issues were discovered with the setup. For various reasons, updating the client is not an option at this time. The fix the issue, the server needs to export NFS3 mounts but the clients do not support that version. As a workaround, I considered adding a third system running CentOS that would mount the server and re-export it to the clients. This will mitigate the current issue related to visibility of the share from certain groups. It does not appear possible, using the current kernel-based NFS server, to export an NFS-mounted filesystem. However, it appears that there is a FUSE NFS project that might work. Does anyone have any experience with such a setup?

I'm currently running VMware Server 2.0.2, but I would like to make the move to the open source virtualization - if possible. What I found is somewhat short on the networking piece. Hello, I would use some (old) pc's as thin clients and have them boot over the network from the server, or from cd. Then, have them make a connection to the server with the NX protocol. Thinstation.org provides all this. Just install FreeNX on the server (yum install) and manage the accounts as local accounts. Can't have it any simpeler than that in my opinion, also for management. Grub booting issue

Disks for virtualization

I'm not looking to move virtual machines between physical platforms; just want some protection between applications sharing a physical server. They'll all be using local disk in one form or another. Much the easiest to manage is just having the virtual machine use a file in dom0 as its disk. Without pre-allocating, this lets me over-commit somewhat to cover unknown future needs, for example. The alternative seems to be LVM partitions. Those are easy to throw around too, but after enough creation / destruction you can end up with your free-space fragmented so you can't use it, right? But I imagine there's a performance benefit to LVM partitions over dom0 files. For things like foswiki for internal use by a development team, and Nagios monitoring for about a dozen systems, do i need that extra performance? Problems getting my wireles connection to work

DomU install failure for Centos 5.5 using the "RHEL 5.4 and greater" OS option

Had some trouble getting Centos x64 installed as a guest in my new Centos 5.5 x64 server using Xen (thanks again for all the help getting the hardware virtualization turned on and confirmed yesterday!). When I chose OS Linux, and whatever they called the detailed OS subtype I chose the Red Hat Enterprise 5.4 and greater, and then tried to install Centos 5.5, the install started and I got into the graphics installer, but when it was supposed to start installing individual packages the whole virt-manager and console window hung. Three times, at that same point. (I was monitoring web traffic to the install files it was working from, and it wasn't fetching files, either). When I selected just "RHEL 5", it installed (and I'm now running the package updater, and it may have hung there; we'll see). I would have expected the rhel 5.4 and greater option to be the right one for Centos 5.5. Anybody have similar experiences? To the list: 1) Someone off the list (thanks!) offered to send me an RT kernel based on 2.6.23.X. So I thought why not try to build a standard / server type based on the standard 2.6.23 version. 2) Red Hat 6 Beta 2 is based on a similar starting point 3) I was not going to fix something Red Hat broke. They responded to me that they only support the configuration of the generic binary they ship. This is the answer I received from them for bug # 558367 "Jarod Wilson 2010-07-14 13:40:06 EDT Officially, Red Hat does not support rebuilds of its kernel with configurations other than the one Red Hat ships. You're welcome to submit a patch to fix the build, which will be considered for inclusion, and/or wait for someone here to have the time to work on this, but there are only so many hours in the day. Most of Red Hat engineering is busy working on problems related to configurations that Red Hat *does* support. If this is a particularly serious issue for you though, you're welcome to try to escalate it through customer support. " /Flame proof on This answer brings to light some very serious limitations. First, if you want to turn on a standard kernel feature and its broken (like what I tried), it is not officially supported by Red Hat nor Centos. Therefore, xfs, ntfs, and many other features quite a few of us use may be broken at any time when the upstream provider "fixes or updates" a kernel. /Flame proof off/ I am just stating a warning based on an official answer. NO OPINION OFFERED OR IMPLIED Now for the fix.... No, it was not me that fixed this. I just thought maybe we should try a kernel that has been thoroughly tested by the "kernel people". I used the kernel.org, 2.6.23.17 kernel I used the old .config from the latest Centos 5.5 src.rpm Ran make oldconfig I answered most new questions with the default I enabled AMD Opteron, Disabled optimize for size and changed the default CPU frequency governor to performance. I turned off isdn, infiniband, ATM and a few others (we don't use them) I turned on NTFS and with writes (it was broken in 5.2), xfs and jfs then make; make install_modules mkinitrd ; edit grub; reboot This seems to work fine on a standard Centos 5.5 x86_64 install. I am going to run this on a test server for a few weeks and see how well it works. When launching oowriter and other apps, I get this error: _IceTransSocketUNIXConnect: Cannot connect to non-local host myh.dom.tld The app -- oowriter or whatever I happen to be invoking-- starts okay. But this error message tells me something's not right. Curiously, the "hostname" command yields "myhost", but "hostname -f" yields "localhost.localdomain". Doing "ifconfig eth0" specifies the correct IP address for this system. GPT Partitions >2.2T with Centos 5.5

Dear all, unfortunately I observe drastic drops in read- performance when I connect LUNs >2.2T to our Centos 5.5 Servers. I suspect issues with the GUID Partition Table, since it happens reproducibly only on the LUNs >2.2T and goes back to normal performance when using a LUN <2T with "normal", Legacy MBR partitions. All machines are CentOS 5.5 (and RHEL 5.5) on IBM Blades LS21/LS41, all LUNs via Brocade 4G FC Switches from a SUN 7310 Unified Storage, EXT3 filesystems with standard settings. Unloking gnome keyring on login

I hope someone can help me because I have spent a week on this and still I can't make it to work. I have a CentOS 5.5 server and I am trying to set it up so that upon login the gnome default keyring is unlocked. I don't have a desktop as users will login using ssh only. I have search the forum and google it, and I did find some help. All the articles though said to change /etc/pam.d/gdm (which I think is for the Gnome Desktop Manager). I did it anyway but no joy. I tried changin /etc/pam.d/login, and no joy. I'm becoming a bit desperate. The changes I have done are to add auth optional pam_keyring.so (sometimes with try_first_pass) and session optional pam_keyring.so auto_start (sometimes without auto_start) All the time the gnome-keyring-daemon is not started. But even if I start it at login, with a new /etc/prodile.d/gnome-keyring-daemon.sh script which runs export `/usr/bin/gnome-keyring-daemon`, the keyring is not unlocked at login. Just to let you know, I use the keyring to store passwords for a Subversion repository. The first time, after logging in, I use Subversion I am asked for the password to unlock the keyring. Then everything goes fine, i.e. I'm not ask for the Subversion password. After I sorted this out I need to set the server so that the keyring password is changed automatically when the user changes his login password (I tried alread, changing /etc/pam.d/passwd similarly as I've done above but it's not working) So, please can anyone help me? Administrating several systems with multiple LUNs of +2.2TB and not seeing such a negative performance impact. Filesystem used is ext3. Regards Alexander

I searched Google and read something about superblock being "repeted" to many places on the filesystem but didn't tried anything because of bad explanations and fear of srewing up the partition. I already backed up the important stuff to another server. I'd like to know if it's possible to fix that problem quickly, if not i'll re-install it. Samba and file permissions

A problem that has plagued me for a long time (finally decided to get some expert help) is setting the owner/group on directories/files I create with samba. Here is my situation: On my Linux/Apache I have a user, smith. The /home/smith directory is owned by smith and is part of the group, todd (me) with permissions 775. This works fine until I create via samba a directory in smith e.g. /home/smith/test. The directory is owned by todd and smith cannot create a file in it. What have I missed and how do I fix it? "yum update": When is new header data downloaded? (Trying to set up custom repository...)

I'm trying to set up a custom rpm respository for some in-house software, and configure a number of CentOS 5 clients so that they may install and update the software in question from the location in question. I think I've mostly figured out how to do this - I've successfully installed software on one of the clients via "yum install <my package>" after adding an URL of the form ftp://myserver/pub/<mysoftware> to the list of repositories, and uploading 1. A directory containing the packages. 2. A "repodata" directory generated by createrepo. to the appropriate server location. But then I wanted to see if could publish an upgrade, too, so I did, on the server-side: 1. Updated the release number in my rpm spec files and rebuilt. 2. Put the rpms on the right location. 3. createrepo -q --update <directory> And on the client yum update <my package> Problem is, this did nothing besides printing the message: No Packages marked for Update So I thought the repository hadn't been properly updated, but then I tried (still on the client): rm -rf /var/cache/yum/<mysoftware> yum update <my package> And, hey presto, the package was upgraded to the new version. So, it seems like I managed to correctly update the repodata and all, but originally, yum concluded that it didn't need to download a new version, but could use the one cached earlier. instead. Does anyone have any idea why this happened? How exactly does yum decide when to download new headers and when to reuse cached data? When I attempt an upload in my test environment, I get the following error: An error has occurred: receiving directory insufficient permission... The upload form is reloading The destination file being moved by move_uploaded_file is /home/httpd//test/upload/uploads/1278898550-_DSC1159.jpg The initial file name is suppose to be /tmp/phpR1lmmc I am not sure what to set for Owner and Group for the "uploads" directory nor the permissions (it is now set to 775). Simple solution for small network in a school ?

Hi, I have to install a small network in a school in a nearby village. The network will be Linux-only, one server and fifteen desktops. Here's the idea. 1) Authentication should be managed centrally on the server. 2) User home directories should also be on the server. 3) Users should all have disk quotas, something like 1 GB per user. 4) Some shared directories should be read/write for a defined group of users (teachers) and read-only for others. So far, I've only dealt with local authentication. I have a little practice in basic setups of Samba and NFS and managed to get these to work OK. On the other hand, I've never worked with NIS, LDAP or the likes. My question is more general, and I don't want to go into technical details. According to the KISS principle, which solution would you recommend (or explicitly *not* recommend)? A mix of LDAP and Samba? Or NIS and NFS? And what's this thing called Directory Server, which vaguely sounds like it's the right way to go? Any suggestions? Cheers from the hot South of France, Niki

Networking just stopped working

Hi all, I have a box with a quad port Netxen NIC running Centos 5. All four interfaces are slaves of bond0 and bond0 is used by two vlan interfaces. All was working just fine until just recently when everything just stopped working. ethtool reports all the individual interfaces are just fine. The switch is not complaining either. But I cannot ping anywhere not can others 'see' the box. Any ideas? I have turned off iptables, rebooted the switches but still the thing won't work. Christopher

Redundant LAN routing possible?

I've been reading that it's possible to set up a system with multiple NIC to provide redundant internet connectivity such that it will switch to a secondary connection if the primary ISP fails. Is it possible in a similar way to setup redundant LAN routing? I read that it is possible to aggregate/bond multiple NIC to stackable switches that support link aggregation and redundancy. But if only simple switches are available, is something like this possible? e.g. System A eth0 -> lan switch/router 1 eth1 -> lan switch/router 2 System B eth0 -> lan switch 1 eth1 -> lan switch 2 Then somehow specify that, if lan switch 1 fails, the two systems will switch to using switch 2 so that in case of a switch failure, the network continues to remain operational.

Hi All, I'm trying to get lm_sensors to work on a Shuttle with an AMD K10. The version of lm_sensors in the main CentOS repo is 2.10.7, which is two years old now. Support for the K10 was added about a year ago. So, does anyone know if there are binaries available for more recent versions of lm_sensors? Also, if anyone has knowledge of the sensors layout for recent Shuttle AMD motherboards, that would be very helpful. The sensors-detect script from 2.10.7 doesn't detect anything useful... I had a corrupted installation of OpenOffice.org 3.1. When I used "yum remove openoffice.org-core" the response was "package openoffice.org-core available but not installed", but then, when I used "yum install openoffice.org-core there was a long list of Transaction Check Errors. I then removed openoffice.org3.1-redhat-menus-noarch which was in the errors. Here's the first of those errors: Transaction Check Error: file /usr/bin/soffice from install of openoffice.org-core-3.1.1-19.5.el5_5.1.i386 conflicts with file from package openoffice.org3.1-redhat-menus-3.1-9393.noarch The transaction completed OK, after I removed openoffice.org3.1-redhat-menus-noarch, but now, there is nothing in Applications/Office menu for OpenOffice.org :-) Question: How do I get the different entries for OpenOffice.org to appear in that menu again so I can launch the application? (If I need to install the latest version of openoffice.org3.1-redhat-menus-noarch what command do I use to get the correct version?) To the Linux Community at Large: I reported to this list back in January, 2010 that the standard x86_64 kernel, when built from the src.rpm and modified for AMD K8 / K10 Extensions would not build. I reported this here and to Red Hat via Bugzilla ID number 558367. RH AS / Centos 5.3 worked fine. That was Centos 5.4 / Red Hat Enterprise AS 5 Update 4. Today we tried to optimize Red Hat Enterprise AS 5 Update 5. Same problem. At last check all kernels from 2.6.18-10 to 2.6.18-194 won't build with AMD specific optimizations. For 9 years now we have used and supported Centos and before that white box. We have sold, installed and provided consulting on Red Hat Linux and RH Enterprise Linux, Centos, Scientific Linux, OpenSUSE and SUSE Linux Enterprise. In April this year, the bug was still marked as new and we had to recommend to a customer to use SUSE Linux Enterprise instead of Red Hat Enterprise, as Novell's product supports optimizations in its kernel for AMD Opterons. 12 SLES Enterprise copies were sold to the customer. I'm sure that would have easily paid for the fix required in Redhat's kernel. I am beginning to wonder if Red Hat is getting too big? Or that it just does not care. Other ideas less pleasant come to mind.... Today, the old bug was still marked as new (6+ months and counting). I entered a new bug report for RH 5.5 for the same issue. Is there no way, unless you are a huge customer, to get your bug listed as anything except LOW PRIORITY?? Now we are looking at the AMD G34 CPU's and are building some demo units. I think its time to benchmark these systems with the working - non optimized Red Hat / Centos Linux versus the optimized Opensuse / SLES Linux for standard server functions and publish them. Has anyone else had this NON response from Red Hat for similar issues? I'd like to hear from them. Kickstart from tagged VLAN?

I've searched around but haven't found a definitive answer yet, is it possible to kickstart from a tagged VLAN? I found this bugzilla: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=431915 But I can't find out how far the vlan support goes. I haven't found anything about it in any kickstart docs. I have two tagged vlans: Vlan 100 - server subnet Vlan 101 - backup subnet From start to finish anaconda needs to pick up a dynamic address from vlan 100. After that the kickstart file specifies the static adress from vlan100 and it's address from the backup subnet. Anyone know if this is currently possible? If so any nod in the right direction would be appreciated Jeff

DNS problem while trying to join windows 7 to samba3x pdc

I am running centos 5.5 using samba3x as a pdc. I migrated to samba3x so that I could join Windows 7 machines to the domain. It is a new setup using a tried and true configuration from a different box. I have used this configuration in the past to joing Windows XP Pro machines. And I havn't found anyting helpful on the error with google. I can ping the server name and the server can ping the windows 7 box. I can access smaba shares on the server but I cannot join the domain. I have applied the reg settings to win7 and when I try to join I get this error. An Active Directory Domain Controller (AD DC) for domain admin could not be contacted. Ensure that the domain name is typed correctly. If the name is correct, click Details for troubleshooting information. The details read: Note: This information is intended for a network administrator. If you are not your network's administrator, notify the administrator that you received this information, which has been recorded in the file C:\Windows\debug\dcdiag.txt. The domain name "admin" might be a NetBIOS domain name. If this is the case, verify that the domain name is properly registered with WINS. If you are certain that the name is not a NetBIOS domain name, then the following information can help you troubleshoot your DNS configuration. The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate an Active Directory Domain Controller (AD DC) for domain "admin": The error was: "DNS name does not exist." (error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR) The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.admin Common causes of this error include the following: - The DNS SRV records required to locate a AD DC for the domain are not registered in DNS. These records are registered with a DNS server automatically when a AD DC is added to a domain. They are updated by the AD DC at set intervals. Hi, guys: I attempt to compile a kernel on CentOS 5.3 i386 which is installed in the Virtualbox machine, and its kernel version is 2.6.18-128.el5 ,the new kernel version is 2.6.34.1 All make procedure is running ok. I can generate initrd image with no problem too. But, when I try booting this kernel, I get Kernel panic error message like these: mount: could not find filesystem '/dev/root' setuproot: moving /dev failed: No such file or directory setuproot: error mounting /proc: No such file or directory setuproot: error mounting /sys: No such file or directory switchroot: mount failed: No such file or directory Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! I don't know what is going on here!! Thanks if somebody will be able to help me!

EC2 elastic IP failover

Hello, I have two EC2 instances and I would like to setup some sort of failover strategy for them. They currently act as load balancers, forwarding layer 7 traffic using haproxy and stunnel to other EC2 instances. One of these load balancers currently has an elastic IP assigned with an A record pointing to it. What I'm trying to achieve is to remap this elastic IP in the eventuality of an instance failure. I know that heartbeat/keepalived/pacemaker/openais can do this without any kind of trouble but these tools don't work in Amazon's cloud due to restrictions imposed on their network (multicast/unicast traffic). One way of doing this would would require a network monitoring system that supports event-based script execution. At this point I'm thinking about writing a wrapper script around 'ec2-associate-address' and upon detecting a failure on instance A, my network monitoring system would simply execute the script on instance B in order to re-associate the elastic IP. Does anyone have a better/more elegant solution to this? Regards, -- Andrei

Some Mirrors missing 5.5 directory

Alle, I've noticed recently that during my nightly mrepo runs, I get failures like this: mirror: Access failed: 404 Not Found (/centos/5.5/updates/i386/RPMS) mrepo: Mirroring failed for http://mirror.centos.org/centos/5.5/updates/i386/RPMS/ with message: Failed with return code: 256 When I checked http://mirror.centos.org/centos, I noticed some mirrors have 5.5 directories and some do not, so depending on which mirror is selected during the run, sometimes I get updates and sometimes I do not. I've only seen this with 5.5, never before. Did I miss something somewhere? I *would* just use release 5 in our mrepo conf files if I didn't need to mount CentOS-$release-$arch-bin-DVD-?of2.iso. I'm not sure if this is a yum update or what. Without installing the graphical tools, how can I update the timezone in such a way that the /etc/localtime file won't keep getting clobbered. How current are packages?

I'm relatively new to CentOS. I ordered a VPS and requested CentOS 5.5. As I was installing packages, I noticed that some of the versions are pretty old - for example, Postfix is v 2.3 in the repo (and, according to Postfix's website - no longer mainted). Is this a security risk as the current version is 2.7.1? Building and compiling Postfix from source seems to cause additional problems with yum, so I'm not sure what to do other than perhaps switch to something like Fedora. Perhaps there's a third-party repo with updated packages that I haven't found? Thanks, Matt

What's the deal with all of the new dependencies for xulrunner-devel in the last update? I'm updating my servers and the update for xulrunner-devel is forcing me to install 43 new packages! Is this a packaging problem, or are all of those packages really needed? For the moment, I've been removing xulrunner-devel from my machines to avoid the problem. I figure since it is a development package, I can always reinstall it later if I need it. Bowie

ntp server

I have a need to run a centos server CUT-off from any connected network. So the NTP server that is running on this very small network cannot connect to any other site to do what NTP does. however, I have devices on this small network that I wish to use the centos server as the time source and run ntpd. However - it seems like ntpd server does not like to run this way. There is a LONG delay before it finally says OK - no one to talk to so I'll just give the time anyway. Then things start working. Is there some method to SKIP this long delay??? It seems like its 15 or 20 minutes. I need to bypass that delay or tell ntpd "I dont care about others time" just provide the time you have. KVM virtual guest can not use serial port

I hope this is not to far off topic. I have a Windows 2003 guest on a CentOS 5.5 KVM host. I need to use the serial port on the win2003 guest for the application it is serving. I have no idea what needs to be done but it looks like the linux host is trying to use the serial port as the priamary console but I don't really understand what that is or where it is configured. What I need is for the host to ignore any traffice over the serial port and to pass it to the guest. On the host, ls -l /dev | grep ttyS, returns: crw-rw---- 1 root uucp 4, 64 Jul 6 10:17 ttyS0 crw-rw---- 1 root uucp 4, 65 Jul 6 10:17 ttyS1 crw-rw---- 1 root uucp 4, 66 Jul 6 10:17 ttyS2 crw-rw---- 1 root uucp 4, 67 Jul 6 10:17 ttyS3 It only has 1 serial port so I don't know why ttyS1-S3 are listed. On the guest it says that Com1 is configured and working properly. On the Virtual Machine Hardware tab of the guest it lists a Serial 0. Details: Serial Device (Priamary Console) Device Type: pty Target Port: 0 Source Path: /dev/pts/2 Any help would be greatly appreaciated. Thanks!!!

I download the RHEL 6b2 and noticed the modprobe.conf was no longer present. I used modprobe.conf to place "options" for ethernet drivers like which order to install the drivers. e1000e before forcedeth - things like that. Anyway - seems like that file is no longer present. what is the "future" way to handle driver options? Thanks Jerry

I'm trying to get usable reports out of logwatch on this new system. Looks like the reports are running in an 'unformatted' mode under Postfix/Amavisd. I found a couple of programs, postfix-logwatch and amavisd-logwatch. These sound promising. I am running Amavisd as the frontend to Postfix. Is anybody running either of these as a logwatch filter? If so, is it repetitive to run both, or should I consider only one of above and which would provide the best results? And, are these in any of the CentOS repositories? Couldn't find them in Dag's. I have made a new rpm from source, and now I'd like to use this to replace the old version rpm in centos cd. So, When I install centos for my computer, I can choose to install it automaticly. Ext4 safe for production use?

As part of my current research for upcoming setup, I started reading up on filesystems (was actually looking up fencing which leds to node crash and file integrity on different fs) to see if there would be any significant improvement to using a different filesystem for networked storage. e.g. glusterfs on top of ext4 nodes. Initially, the reading suggested that ext4 would provide a significant performance boost. Quite possibly since it delays write longer, latencies of the network storage is hidden even better especially for temporary files. After subsequent reading, it seems that the cost of the massive delay allocation that could blow up really bad in the event the system crash. However, this may also be limited to poorly written applications, i.e. since some massive arguments last year over Firefox 3.0, sqlite and ext4 problems, ext4 now detects situations where it should flush to disk immediately to avoid zero length files on crash. Assuming I'm using the most likely disk writing applications I'm using is KVM, exim, dovecot, mysql and postgresql, would ext4 be safe for production use or should I stick to ext3?

DNS or firewall problem

Been working this for over a month now and I'm stumped. Everything was working until the 'crash'. Backup was no good so I did a fresh install of centos 5.5. Trying to get things back like they were but its been a really long time since I had to set things up from scratch, Redhat 2.0. My centos server acts as a gateway/firewall/router for my home network. Internal machines can access the internet. The server can access the internet. I can access my server/services from outside the local network but internal machines cannot. Any ideas/suggestions? I have upgraded form 5.4 to 5.5 . after that i 'm having problem with nautilus .... some strange errors like "not on the same file system" occurs during file operation like moving deleting etc..... after that i did a fresh installation of 5.5 . then aslo same problem .. does anyone experienced such a problem ?? Now i'm using 5.3 . Also the Bind DNS server in 5.4 and 5.5 seems to be buggy . I don't have any problem with BIND on 5.3

I have a CentOS 5.5 system that is dual-boot CentOS 5.5 and Windows XP w/SP3 formatted with NTFS (for the Windows partition, of course). I have installed fuse (ntfs-3g) to allow read/write access to the NTFS partition from CentOS. No regular user has sudo. What is the best way to limit the access a user logging into the CentOS from mangling or changing data in unwanted areas of the fuse-mounted NTFS partition? I presume this would be somewhere in /etc/fstab, but what should the mount line say for at least write limitations? Thanks. Scott

Which of these would be the recommended virtualization platform for mainly CentOS guest on CentOS host for running a virtualized mail server? From what I've read, objectively it seems that VMWare's still the way to go although I would had like to go with Xen or KVM just as a matter of subjective preference. VMWare's offering seems to have the best support and tools, plus likely the most matured of the options. Also given their market dominance, unlikely to just up and die in the near future. Xen would had been a possible option except Redhat appears to be focusing on KVM as their virtualization platform of choice to compete with VMWare and Citrix. So maybe Xen support will be killed shortly. Plus the modified xen kernel apparently causes conflict with certain software, at least based on previous incidents where I'd been advised not to use the CentOS xen kernel if not using xen virtualization. KVM would be ideal since it's opensource and would be supported in CentOS as far as can be reasonably foreseen. However, looking at available resources, it seems to have these key disadvantages 1. Poorer performance under load. http://wiki.xensource.com/xenwiki/Open_Topics_For_Discussion?action=AttachF… This 2008 XenSummit paper indicates that it dies on heavy network load as well as when there are more than a few VM doing heavy processing at the same time. But that's two years ago and they weren't using paravirtual drivers it seems. http://vmstudy.blogspot.com/2010/04/network-performance-test-xenkvm-vt-d.ht… This blog testing out Xen/KVM pretty recently. While the loads are not as drastic and neither the difference, it still shows that KVM does lag behind by about 10%. This is a concern since I plan to put storage on the network and the most heavy load the client has is basically the email server due to the volume plus inline antivirus and anti-spam scanning to be done on those emails. Admittedly, they won't be seeing as much emails as say a webhost but most of their emails come with relatively large attachments. 2. Security Some sites point out that KVM VM runs in userspace as threads. So a compromised guest OS would then give intruder access to the system as well as other VMs. Should I really be concerned or are these worries only for extreme situations and that KVM is viable for normal production situations? Are there other things I should be aware of?

I am looking to build a Workgroup Server. (Should be compatible/certified with both XEN & VMware hypervisors, as I am not sure which one I will settle with...comments requested) To run baremetal on hypervisor, with each of the following services running virtualized with minimum OS install (CentOS 5.x, latest stable release). - Multi-homed router-cum-border firewall (Access to Network Card limited to this instance...will act as router for rest of virtual machines). - DNS Server (djbDNS). - Mail Server (Qmail). - News Server (INN). - Webserver (Apache). - RDBMS (postgreSQL...highest load). In addition to above the server to provide Windows RDP &/or Linux Desktop Thinclient to 5 users running diskless thin clients or old desktops (second highest load). Server to have adequate amount of memory for the above and 500 GB/1 TB RAID 5 or better using SATA disks. What Server Specs. I am looking at? I understand DB load is major in this but assuming moderate to medium db load, what do I need. Will seperate the server & Thinclient server six months/year down the road. What budget? Hi All, I'm having a bit of difficulty getting a CentOS 5.5 Kerberized NFSv4 server working. This server is configured as a Winbind client to a Windows 2003 Active Directory. I've successfully bound it to AD and I am able to authenticate. I've successfully created a NFSv4 entry in /etc/exports to export the /exports directory and I can successfully mount a non-Kerberized NFSv4 mount on a client machine. I now want to take it to the next step and add Kerberos and it doesn't seem to be working for me. Below are my configurations and the steps I performed. Fresh install of CentOS 5.5. Non-Kickstarted. Wanted to get it working manually first. Used the First Boot Authentication Wizard to configure Winbind Support for User Information. Configured Winbind and Kerberos under the Authentication Tab Checked Local auth is sufficient and Create home directories under options The computer successfully joins the domain and appears in the Computer container in AD. Below is the extract from /etc/samba/smb.conf for authconfig plus what I changed, everything else is stock. File sharing solution

I would like to offer my isp clients a solution for sharing (big) files, basically on one-to-one basis. This is how I imagine it: - an anonymous or registered user can upload a file - on response (s)he will get a file-specific (or batch-specific) username/password - (s)he can send a link and un/pw by email - the receiver can download the file - the file will be automatically deleted from the server in n days There must exist an opensource solution for this, but I could not find it by google. NIC config documentation?

Does anyone have a favorite howto or other succinct document that that describes how to set up networking on a multi-nic host when you don't know ahead of time which nic is which? I usually muddle through it by plugging in one wire at a time, using mii-tool to see which link is up, then ifconfig on that interface to get the HWaddr to put in the corresponding /etc/sysconfig/network-scipts/ifcfg-eth? file. Firefox slower on GMail since update to CentOS 5.5

Hello, since I upgraded from CentOS x86_64 5.4 to 5.5, I noticed that Firefox has become significantly slower on GMail (or Google Apps Mail). The page becomes slow to scroll as soon as there are more than a few mails in a conversation (like in a typical CentOS mailing list thread). Did anyone else notice that as well? (I guess that I'm not the only GMail user around) Could I have missed something / do something wrong? More details: - I did a fresh install from the 5.5 install DVD, keeping only the home directories - I'm using the Nvidia driver from elrepo (but I had the pb also with the default driver) Cheers, Mathieu

GNBD/LVM problem

Hello all: I'm having a strange problem with GNBD and LVM on two fully updated CentOS 5.5 x86_64 systems. On node1, I have exported a gnbd volume. lvcreate -L 500M -n mirrortest_lv01 mirrorvg gnbd_serv gnbd_export -d /dev/mirrorvg/mirrortest_lv01 -e node1_lv01 On node2 I have imported the volume: gnbd_import -i node1 Next, on node2 I attempt to create a mirrored LV with the imported GNBD volume and a local disk: fdisk /dev/gnbd/node1_lv01 then create an LVM partition fdisk /dev/sdb then create an LVM partition I can then create a volume group with those two disks: pvs vgcreate mirrorvg /dev/sdb1 /dev/gnbd0 The problem occurs when I try to create a mirrored LV using the above VG. [root@vm-helios-002 ~]# lvcreate --mirrorlog core -L 256M -n mirroredlv01 -m 1 mirrortestvg Insufficient suitable allocatable extents for logical volume : 64 more required Unable to allocate extents for mirror(s). It doesn't matter what disk sizes are available. Even creating a non-mirrored LV causes issues: [root@vm-helios-002 ~]# lvcreate -L 256M -n mirroredlv01 mirrortestvg Error locking on node 192.168.8.152: device-mapper: create ioctl failed: Device or resource busy Error locking on node 192.168.8.151: Volume group for uuid not found: xCTR5M2kOEBiLM7eSRntez2y2VKy9vvqnSs6LTC99x9kIsAdNI2l8CH90h6BYKsH Aborting. Failed to activate new LV to wipe the start of it. [root@vm-helios-002 ~]# The other issue that's occurring is that even if I remove the GNBD PV from the mirrortestvg, it still gives the error (i.e., using just local disk). Not sure where to look at this point. I suspect it has something to do with the cluster locking, but the configuration is really basic and specifies no clustered volumes.

I was doing a upgrade of an existing machine from 5.4 to 5.5. Everything else worked except for this rpm filesystem-2.4.0-3.el5.x86_64 It seems that it's trying to unpack the file into the CentOS DVD mount point > Error unpacking rpm package filesystem-2.4.0-3.el5.x86_64 > error: unpacking of archive failed on file /media: cpio: lsetfilecon Would it be safe to manually download the rpm then install it locally, or would that not work either? I haven't restart the machine because I'm concerned that not updating this file could mean the filesystem becomes inaccessible.

How can binaries be different when package versions are identical? (mkfs.ext3 on CentOS 5.4)

Situation: two similar servers, both with CentOS 5.4 64-bit. Making an ext3 filesystem on one takes seconds, on the other minutes. Partition Size Server 1 Server 2 1 GB 0.7 sec 0.3 sec 4 GB 2.5 sec 1.2 sec 40 GB 15 sec 13 min WTF e2fsprogs RPM is e2fsprogs-1.39-23.el5 on both systems mkfs --version reports "util-linux 2.13-pre7" on both systems mkfs -V reports the same on both systems (mke2fs 1.3 (29-May-2006) Using EXT2FS Library version 1.39) file size on mkfs and mkfs.ext3 binaries is identical However, checksum on these binaries differs across servers, and "cmp" reports files are different I took "mkfs" and "mkfs.ext3" from server 1, put them on server 2, and got an improvement: 40 GB 15 sec 3 min Just out of curiousity, I ran "rpm -V e2fsprogs" to see if rpm would pick up the difference and sure enough, it complained mkfs.ext3 changed. Both of these servers have CentOS 5.4; Server 1 was installed in Dec 2009, Server 2 in April 2010. I'd like to: (a) account for the difference in the binaries, and (b) see if something else is different that I can make the same to get the mkfs.ext3 time down to 15 sec on both systems. Solving (a) should shed light on (b). Any ideas? Best, Aleksey

Live CD problems

Hi, I'm trying to repair a remote system using the Live CD. I have VPN access to the subnet where it lives. An onsite person is booting from cd, and running a small script I provided to tweak the default firewall rule set to allow incoming ssh, and set a password for the centos user and start sshd so far so good I can remotely access the system. the problem is the live cd environment is very fragile. I need to rebuild the contents of a couple filesystems, so I need to umount them and remount them rw. If I make a mistake in a mount command instead of giving an error message and letting me try again. The system freezes and any other ssh session freezes, ahnd will not accept any more incoming ssh connections. the only way I have found to recover is have the onsite person reboot from cd and rerun the script allowing incoming ssh again. Hmm. I should try to talk the onsite person through trying something else from the console. Argghhh!!!
