I think there was just a thread 'bout this, and I didn't pay attention... and then I walked into our smallest server room to rebuild a server with CentOS... and that's what it is. The problem I'm having is this: there are two 1T SAS drives, raided, via the controller. There's also a 750G SATA drive. The Dell test suite sees it, and reports that SMART says it's fine. However, no matter what I do, the BIOS doesn't see it, and when I boot to linux text, fdisk only sees the raided 1t. Clues for the poor? I want to put the system on the SATA drive, leaving the raid for data. mark

Samba and " (and maybe other characters) in paths/files

Hello I have samba installed on my server, with a fileshare. When connecting to samba, using windows, filesnames with " (double quotes) in them become gibberish on the windows client. Under linux I connect to these fileshares using NFS, and the names are correct (I also created them this way). I've made a screenshot: http://users.webmind.be/~glenn/samba.PNG How can I fix this? centos5.5 text install forcing me to add all disks to LVM volgroup

Graphic installer doesn't like my graphics card, so I am using the text installer. I have two physical disks in my system. When I get to the "partitioning type" page, I choose "remove all partitions on selected drives [etc]" and put an asterisk next to sda, no asterisk next to sdb. I want to use sdb as a separate partition, no LVM, I figure I can set it up after installing. Then I hit 'OK' and go to the warning page, say yes. Review and modify partitioning layout - yes. So now I am looking at the partitioning page and I am surprised to see /dev/sdb and sdb1 down at the bottom, since that disk was *not* selected. I select sdb1 and try to delete, it says " unable to delete You cannot delete this partition: this parition is part of the LVM volume group 'volgroup00'". If I try to delete /dev/sdb1, it says I must choose a partiton. If i try to edit volgroup00, it says 'LVM volume groups can only be edited in the graphical installer." So, am I stuck? It seems like my only option is to go ahead and add both disks, then try to remove one of the disks after completing the install. Is there some sort of workaround for this? What if I actually had some data on that drive (fortunately I do not), would it get wiped by this? Mahalo, Dave

spamassassin needs updating?

The spamassassin on my server is 3.2.5 and is stock CentOS 5.x. I do apply updates regularly. Most of my legitimate contacts are either whitelisted or sorted into folders before spamassassin sees them, but I have noticed an increasing amount of legitimate mail marked as spam. One issue seems to be the FH_DATE_PAST_20XX rule. I was able to fix that via running sa-update as root per http://wiki.apache.org/spamassassin/Rules/FH_DATE_PAST_20XX Should the rule be fixed in the actual RPM though since it is past 2010? Secondly a lot of mail is marked due to DNS_FROM_OPENWHOIS In SpamAssassin 3.3 and later, that rule is removed because: Status of bl.open-whois.org: DEAD http://wiki.apache.org/spamassassin/Rules/DNS_FROM_OPENWHOIS Shouldn't that rule then be removed from the CentOS RPM? I think I figured out how to remove it manually (give score of 0.0 on trigger) but if it doesn't work, it should be patched out of the CentOS RPM, no? Will CentOS patch it w/o rhel patching? IE where should I search for bug reports and file a bugzilla?

Amavisd-new UBE problem on Postfix server

This is a web hosting mailserver, so there are multiple domains being passed through this email system. I decided this new system would be Postfix and followed the Centos Wiki to aid in the installation and setup. It seems that Amavisd is throwing this error from time to time. ----- Subject: Considered UNSOLICITED BULK EMAIL, apparently from you From: "Content-filter at <mailserverdomainname.com> ----- and now I'll skip to the bottom of the error message ------ First upstream SMTP client IP address: [97.13.153.201] According to a 'Received:' trace, the message apparently originated at: [97.13.153.201], localhost 201.sub-97-13-153.myvzw.com [97.13.153.201] ------- which shows this email was sent through a smart phone on the Verizon network. The email settings on the phone are correct. The domain name of the sender is properly configured and email is working on their computer. I have searched for this and found many questions about why and only one ugly solution. It seems that if you add the domain name to @local_domains_maps = in amavis conf, the problem goes away, at least in some situations. Obviously not something one wants to have to do with each additional domain added to a server. Amavis is set to the default @local_domains_maps = ( [".$mydomain"] ); # list of all local domains on my system. $mydomain is set to the mailservername. Hi,guys: I am trying to setup OpenLDAP on CentOS 5.3 i386 for a client of mine. everytime I try running 'service ldap start', I get the following in syslog: root@xx ~: tailf /var/log/messages .....slaptest: sql_select option missing ....slaptest: auxpropfunc error no mechanism available ....slapd[4392]: sql_select option missing ....slapd[4392]: auxpropfunc error no mechanism available ....ldap: slapd startup failed I have checked the permissions on /etc/ldap.conf and /etc/openldap.conf and the two are chmod'd ldap:ldap Can anyone give me pointers? centos 5.5 on optiplex 745

Hi, we have some old dell optiplex 745 machines which have the Intel 965q chipset. The problem is, that they freeze as soon as the system tries to start the X system. It happens even before any log is written. This happens almost every time (for some reason it sometimes work, but 99% it fails). When i change the graphic driver in xorg.conf from intel to vesa it mostly works, but still i sometimes get a flickering screen, but this can mostly be resolved using ctrl+alt+backspace (sometimes you have to try this twice). We use the 1024x768 and 24 bit colors, so this shouldn't be the problem. Does anyone know a fix for this problem? Janez

Hi,all: I'm working on populating an OpenLDAP server (Dapper) for pam authentication. I'm having trouble import LDIFs for my groups. The following is and example: (this imports on CentOS 5.3 i386, openldap version is 2.3.43-3.el5 ) # org.X.admins dn: cn=admins,dc=X,dc=org changetype: add objectClass: groupOfNames objectClass: top objectClass: posixGroup cn: admins gidNumber: 1001 member: cn=admin,dc=X,dc=org I get the following error: adding new entry "cn=admins,dc=X,dc=org" ldap_add: Object class violation (65) additional info: invalid structural object class chain (groupOfNames/posixGroup) Now, if I strip it down a little, this will import: dn: cn=admins,dc=X,dc=org changetype: add objectClass: posixGroup cn: admins gidNumber: 1001 I don't see though how this is supposed to tie to a user without the member entries. So what is the wrong with it ?Could someone give me some suggestions? Thanks ~

CentOS 5.3 Xen installation trouble installing FUSE

Hi, I've got CentOS 5.3 installed as a Xen client installed. I've recently been trying to install TrueCrypt on the VM, but am having miserable troubles with the Fuse kernel module. To date, I've installed the following packages: yum install truecrypt yum install fuse However, to launch the fuse module, I need the dkms_autoinstaller running. However, when I try to start the dkms_autoinstaller service I get the following error messages: Jun 28 23:31:57 charliebrown dkms_autoinstaller: fuse (2.7.4-1.nodist.rf): Installing module on kernel 2.6.18-128.2.1.el5xen. Jun 28 23:31:57 charliebrown dkms_autoinstaller: Kernel headers for 2.6.18-128.2.1.el5xen are not installed. Cannot install this module. Jun 28 23:31:57 charliebrown dkms_autoinstaller: Try installing linux-headers-2.6.18-128.2.1.el5xen or equivalent. Indeed, the kernel modules available in yum are for 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5. I fished around, and found a kernel-headers package for 2.6.18-128.2.1.el5 (http://137.138.246.63/cern/slc5X/x86_64/yum/updates/repoview/kernel-headers…) I downloaded the RPM, and downgraded my kernel-headers package. So I now have the kernel-headers package for 2.6.18-128.2.1.el5 installed. However, when I try to start the dkms_autoinstaller, I still get the same error message indicating that the Kernel headers for 2.6.18-128.2.1.el5xen are not installed. Where can I find this package? They aren't on the Citrix repos. From the few threads I've read, ppl are suggested to download a DDK VM to build new modules, etc, but that still won't help me, as I need the headers on the actual machine to run the dkms_autoinstaller service. I'm currently stuck / lost. Any help / suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Eric

Subject line explains most of it.... I'm trying to install Centos from a dvd iso, that has been verified on KVM (Fedora 13) box. Virtual machine boots, and will launch anaconda and will test the media, but on the next step after that it says it can't find CD media.

Dual nw card problem again

I have had problems like this before. Probably there is something important that I don't know about routing. Let me introduce to you "Lasso2", a CentOS 4 www server that has been working perfectly well for years. Now I added a second nw card (eth1), automatically using kudzu. I cannot get this dual nw setup to work. The first nw card (eth0) stopped at once working properly, when I added the second card. Hw failure is probably outruled - the connection via eth0 works normally again if I remove the eth1 card and its settings (on reboot with kudzu). There are several symptoms with the dual nw card setup, and I cannot really get to diagnosis. 1) if you ping lasso2 (the problem machine) with the eth0 ip, the ping requests come in ok, but the ping responses leave the machine via eth2 - not good. I don't really know how to analyze routing and how to use ip (the program) to fix it, so please tell me about it. The "ip route show" output looks perfectly normal to me, it is similar to another 2-card machine I have running (though that is Centos v5) [root@lasso2 ~]# ip route show 62.236.221.64/28 dev eth1 proto kernel scope link src 62.236.221.75 62.220.237.96/27 dev eth0 proto kernel scope link src 62.220.237.114 169.254.0.0/16 dev eth1 scope link default via 62.236.221.65 dev eth1 2) if I ping _from_ lasso2 via eth0, it works ok, as long as the ping target is inside the same network segment. I can ping the router. If I try to ping anything beyond that, I get nothing back. This seems to be problem with ARP resolution. It seems that the broadcast address cannot return the ARP data. Virtualization as cheap redundancy option?

I'm wondering if virtualization could be used as a cheap redundancy solution for situations which can tolerate a certain amount of downtime. Current recommendations is to run some kind of replication server such as DRBD. The problem here is cost if there are more than one server (or servers running on different OS) to be backed up. I'd basically need to tell my client they need to buy say 2X machines instead of just X. Not really attractive :D So I'm wondering if it would be a good, or likely stupid idea, to run X CentOS machines with VMware. Each running a single instance of CentOS and in at least one case of Windows for MSSQL. So if any of the machines physically fails for whatever reasons not related to disk. I'll just transfer the disk to one of the surviving server or a cold standby and have things running again within say 30~60 minutes needed to check the filesystem, then mount and copy the image. I thought I could also rsync the images so that Server 1 backs up Server 2 image file and Server 2 backs up Server 3 etc in a round robin fashion to make this even faster. But reading up indicates that rsync would attempt to mirror the whole 60gb or 80gb image on any change. Bad idea. So while this is not real time HA but in most situations, they can tolerate an hour's downtime. The cost of the "redundancy" also stays constant no matter how many servers are added to the operation. Any comments on this or is it like just plain stupid because there are better options that are equally cost effective?

Whether I like it or not I need to get a version of PHP that is greater than 5.2.1 as the latest SugarCRM version require this and as I am a module developer I need to have one of the later versions of PHP on my machines. Does anyone know of a reliable and good archive for PHP that provides higher versions than the ones supplied by the upstream provider? Centos to use two ISP concurrently..?

Hi all, I'm currently getting my Centos working as a proxy (squid) on a 2 Mb bandwidth plan that's serving 20 users. it's all good though our need for speed is increasing by the day. soon enough i'll be serving up to 60 user, hence the need to get higher bandwidth though here where the problem is. as i'm using HDSL, 2 Mb is the highest plan available. hence, i need to get 2 HDSL subscriptions, in other words 2 modems/IPs to work with.. ( 2 x 2 Mb) the possibility to use routing table isn't feasible as these two ISP's would only be used for browsing, so routing destinations one way or the other isn't an option. i have two initial thoughts to solve this hope you could straighten me out if they're wrong or suggest something better that your experience lead you to use: 1. setup Openvz on a centos box, get two templates up and running with squid setup on them. each one with a different IP. Stop auditd logging all commands

Hello everyone, I have this box where auditd is logging every command typed on the system onto: /var/log/audit/audit.log Every line looks like: type=USER_TTY msg=audit msg=audit(124433....<snip> msg="command here" ... The strange thing is that I have other similar boxes and I don't see this behavior. I don't see any option in /etc/audit/* or any PAM module triggering it. Is there a way to stop this? I don't want to stop the service since "setroubleshoot" needs it. Any ideas? Thanks! Jorge

Did I miss a notification that this practice would be discontinued, or has something broken? I just installed Centos 5.5 x86_64 on a new Toshiba Satellite L1500D. Everything seems to work (so far) other than the wireless networking; lscpi tells me: 0e:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Unknown device 8172 (rev 10) I discovered that I need the realtek driver, so I found and downloaded these: rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0010.1012.2009_64bit.tar.gz rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0017.0507.2010.tar.gz The version dated 2010 appears to be newer, but I can't find one of them that says "64bit" so I'm not sure if I can actually use it or not. I un-tarred it into /usr/src, then copied the contents of the firmware directory to /lib/firmware. When I try to run the make command I get this error. I get the same error regardless of which of the two driver archives I use. What am I doing wrong? Is there an easier way to get this working? I am having a couple of iptables issues with this type of setup myself. The RH manual says to insert a rule into the FORWARD chain like this: -A FORWARD -m physdev --physdev-is-bridged -j ACCEPT However, for the host does this not mean that every packet is accepted. As far as I can discern from the documentation, when one sets up a physically bridged network on a kvm host then every packet arrives across the bridge interface and, insofar as the host is concerned, anything that it does not orginate itself is forwarded. I may be wrong on this, but the behaviour of my ssh filters since putting that command in the FORWARD chain indicates that something along those lines is occurring. Resize all partitions bigger

I effectively have 1 drive /dev/sda (it's actually a hardware raid 10 array) I have lots of free sapce. I want to resize my partitions (boot, home, /) bigger. Going to use Clonezilla to make an image of each partition and save it on another box. Then re-partition and format new bigger partitions. Then restore images with Clonezilla. But I know UUID's will be wrong and I don't feel like creating new ones. I just want to use /dev/sdx Am I correct in assuming I only need to edit /etc/fstab and /etc/grub.conf or is there anything else I need to edit? Using CentOS Live CD to recover trashed RHEL system

Hi, There's a RHEL5 system somewhere across the internet with a trashed root file system. I have VPN access to the subnet where it lives. But the system is not talking to the network. The current plan is having an onsite person boot from a CentOS Live CD, copy a small script to configure networking, set a password for the centos user, start sshd, and tweak the default firewall to allow incoming ssh connections, once I have remote access to the live cd environment I'll create a new lvm logical volume, create a file system, and restore from a level 0 dump taken from a lvm snapshot just before things broke. I'm pretty confident I have all of the above under control. The part I'm not certain about is the grub voodoo to get the system to boot to the lvm with the restored root file system. I'm not certain of the vintage of the restored root file system it was built from an old RHEL5 installation cd and last updated a year or so ago. I have a CentOS 5.5 live cd .iso image staged for the onsite person to burn. Are there differences in the boot process for CentOS/RHEL 5.x versions that I have to worry about. Would it be better to try to get a closer match between the root file system and the live cd vintages. At the moment I'm googling for info on the grub incantations for changing the root file system logical volume. Any comments suggestions would be appreciated. Hardware RAID 10 server - reformat NTFS partition to ext3 and resize for Centos 5.5

Here's the situation. I have a dual boot machine - originally had Red Hat and Windows 2000 Pro. The NTFS partition never did seem to 'get along' with the Adaptec 2400A caching RAID controller. Linux always seemed to like the I2O drivers. I went from RH Enterprise to now running Centos 5.5. Works great! I really don't want the 200 gigs worth of NTFS. Can't I just run GParted from a CD, reformat the NTFS and append the space to the existing Linux partition? What will I have to do with LVM to see the expanded partion? - anything special? I've never done this before - is it really much more complicated than I've outlined here? Please advise this old simpleton. Many thanks in advance. Ed Westphal

Samba share configuration: r/w for some users, read-only for others

Hi, I'm using Samba for some basic setups like open shares for everybody, or restricted shares with Samba users and passwords. So far, everything works fine. I have two situations which both more or less amount to the same, and I don't know how to configure it. One is in a school, the other one in a town hall. 1) In the school, I'd like to configure a share that is readable and writable for all the teachers, and read-only for the students. The idea is that the teachers can write some assignments or various papers and then put them in the share so the students can access them (without modifying them). 2) Similar setup in the town hall. The mayor wants to have a share where he and his secretary can fully access the documents, write them and modify them, and the library users can then access them read-only. Is this feasible with Samba? And if so, what would the according smb.conf look like? Cheers from the sunny South of France, Niki

Bug in cfdisk?

Hi, I'm currently working through Sander Van Vugt's "Beginning the Linux Command Line" (Apress), just for fun. Right now I'm just trying out all the examples in chapter 5, dedicated to managing partitions and logical volumes. After some work with fdisk (which I normally use), the book introduces cfdisk (which I've been using in Slackware days). Curiously enough, CentOS' cfdisk doesn't seem to work. I'm experimenting with two USB sticks connected to an old NEC Powermate, which appear as /dev/sda resp. /dev/sdb. I can access them with fdisk OK and partition them any way I want. Except I can't seem to open them with cfdisk. When I try it, I get the following error message : ************************************** FATAL ERROR: Cannot seek disk on drive Press any key to exit cfdisk ************************************** Now I don't really mind about that error, since fdisk does anything I need. But I'm just wondering about why that happens. Any idea? Niki

Hello all, For (system) certification purposes, we have to upgrade our 4.4 machines to 4.7. In the past I usually have just reinstalled machines to save the (perceived) headaches of upgrading. That is not an option in this case. Are there any pitfalls to watch out for when upgrading? Is it even possible to go up 3 revisions? Hi list, We've had an interesting NFS performance issue with the following setup. Clients : CentOS 5.5, kernel 2.6.18-194.el5 Server : Solaris 10 kernel Generic_142901-08 Reading a file (not cached) with dd : dd if=file1 of=/dev/null bs=1024k count=100 performance is around.. 700 kB/s ! /proc/mounts shows rsize has been negotiated to 1mB If we force rsize to a smaller value, 32kB, the problem goes away and we're back around 70/80 mB/s read performance. Wiresharks show something interesting in the first (slow) case: It seems that the NFS client is "waiting" between requests: 1473 11.756852 client.net nfs1.net TCP 868 > nfs [ACK] Seq=9345 1474 11.757888 nfs1.net client.net RPC Continuation 1475 11.797837 client.net nfs1.net TCP 868 > nfs [ACK] Seq=9345 1476 11.798877 nfs1.net client.net RPC Continuation [....] Notice how the server replies within about 0,001s, but the client appears to be waiting 0,04s before asking for the next bit. How to specify the default route?

I have a machine with two net interfaces. it seems to always pick the wrong one (eth1) as the default route. I can change it with route del default route add default eth0 after it's up (or in rc.local, of course), but I'd like to figure out what I need to do this "the CentOS way" (e.g. edit some configuration file? Run some config utility, what?) once and for all. Can somebody point me to the canonical documentation on the subject? I've searched /usr/share/doc and the man pages, but I can't find anything useful. Googling for "default route centos" gives some interesting stuff, but nothing definitive. Thanks! Rick

NFS exports network mask

Hi, I need to export NFS shares to all clients in a subnetwork, except that one client will have different NFS options. I am not sure how to write subnest mask for this in exports file. For all clients it was easy as all I had to do was 10.0.0.0/16 or 10.0.0.0/255.255.0.0. How do I modify exports file to have special rule/entry for this particular IP? Hi all, Does anybody know why unlike so many Linux distros (Fedora, Ubuntu, OpenSUSE) CentOS does not come with XFS support by default but rather requires custom modifications after the install in order for you to be able to support XFS on your CentOS machine? Migrating away from Nagios

I'd try Zenoss. I wrote a big paper comparing Nagios, OpenNMS and Zenoss ( http://www.skills-1st.co.uk/papers/jane/open_source_mgmt_options.html ) - it's nearly 2 years back now but many of the basics are the same. At that time, I plumped for Zenoss but, to be fair, my main negative on OpenNMS was that it is written in Java - it did pretty-well everything I needed. On the Zenoss front, my main winges were the quality and reliability of the documentation and the code. Zenoss has done a HUGE amount of work on code reliability since then and the documentation is coming along. It runs Nagios plugins if you need that, and will use SNMP, WMI and ssh as protocols to talk to a device. The community is very active and, although Zenoss also have a commercial offering (Enterprise) as well as the free Core, we still seem to get very good air-time from the developers to help resolve issues and to take input from the community. I have to rebuild a new Nagios box and thought this might be a good time to migrate away. I use snmp mostly for everything but with the fork Nagios endured I wonder about putting any more effort into the project. I probably should look at OpenNMS again, but the other options I think might work are Icinga (Should be trivial to migrate) or Zenoss or maybe even Zabbix? Anyone have experience in Nagios and care to share comparisons with similar projects with strong community involvement? Also, anyone currently running OpenNMS that can comment on the learning curve and level of flexibility coming from a Nagios user? Thanks! jlc

Samba3x daily logged errors with Win7 clients

In the course of upgrading from CentOS 5.4 to CentOS 5.5 I changed from using the samba (v3.0.x) packages to the samba3x (v3.3.8) packages, mostly because the newer version was said to better support Win7. The Samba server services Linux, WinXP, and Win7 clients. Now I get many, many errors logged to the Samba logs shortly after 3:00 AM, but only from the Win7 clients. I get roughly 430 sets of these messages in a twenty-second (!) period: [2010/05/25 03:17:36, 1] smbd/service.c:make_connection_snum(748) create_connection_server_info failed: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED These errors are never seen in the Samba logs that track the Linux and WinXP clients, only the Win7 clients. I don't run virus scans or anything else (that I know of) on the Win7 machines in the middle of the night, but I do have the usual cron jobs running on the CentOS server around that time. Could be related to log rotation or something like that? I haven't seen a loss of connectivity, but then I don't use the client machines at 3:15AM. If there is a brief connection failure I wouldn't know it. I used my old (Samba 3.0.x) config file, user definitions and password database when I made the switch to the new (Samba 3.3.8) server and the newer code didn't seem to have any complaints with them. The client shares seem to work without any problems. Any thoughts on what could be generating all these errors? Thanks.

Increasing NFS Performance

Greetings all- I have a CentOS 5 (Final) system that is serving up content to several other hosts via NFS. The amount of data transferred is rather small as most of the files are under 100kb and each export has maybe 100 files that are accessed regularly. I'm finding that as I add more hosts accessing the NFS server, the performance seems to be getting poorer. There are obvious delays when doing simple 'ls' on an NFS mounted directory. The mounts are all done on the local LAN (100mbit FDX), all on the same broadcast domain, no routing. One of the clients is a physical CentOS 5 node, the rest (5-6 total) are OpenVZ containers also running CentOS 5. The NFS server is a Dell PE2950 loaded with 7.2K SATA drives. While the disks aren't exactly performance grade, the bottleneck does not seem to be the disks as access on the NFS server itself is 'normal'. Here are the items I've found so far that are told to increase performance. Since this is a production system, I have yet to try these: 1. Increase the number of instances of NFS running. (As found in /etc/sysconfig/nfs) 2. Try sync vs async behavior in mount parameters on clients 3. rmem_default and wmem_default parameters 4. rsize and wsize parameters (Dependent on MTU. Currently, mine is default at 1500) These are the items I'm planning to try but before I dive in (especially during a late night maintenance period...), I was hoping the list members brighter than me could give some comments on the above items and/or suggest some other things I might try. Querying netgroup information

Hi I have been searching for commands to "debug" netgroup membership. I am using netgroups provided by ldap. I can do a ldap query but it seems a bit unwieldy to do. I have found a package on ubuntu called ng-utils https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/jaunty/+source/ng-utils/0.7-1 which does what I require and compiles very easily. It contains two commands netgroup and innetgr to query netgroup membership with. Two questions: * Is there a similar package with similar commands to query netgroup membership available for Centos? I have not been able to find such a package yet. * If there is no similar commands or packages available would it generally be usefull enough to repackage in rpm for Centos/Redhat/Fedora? Using a composite device under Centos 4.8 - no mouse clicks

I recently got an EEEbox. This is an Atom based nettop. It came with a wireless keyboard/mouse which talk to a 2.4Ghz USB adapter (a Chicony device as it turns out). Now if I plug this adapter into a Centos 4.8 machine both the keyboard and mouse are detected... but mouse clicks aren't. I can move the mouse, the scroll wheel works, but buttons 1/2/3 aren't detected. Neither in X nor in console gpm. It worked fine in Ubuntu 10.04, and obviously works fine with Windows XP. My feeling is that maybe perhaps the older 4.8 kernel doesn't have a sufficiently good driver so I might be forced to compile my own (*sigh*) but I was wondering if anyone else had come across a similar issue and had a work around? -- rgds Stephen

Hello guys, I have a couple of servers that I'm about to virtualize to our VMware Vsphere ecosystem. For Linux servers I read that one needs to use the stand-alone converter (which is a live-cd that you boot from it and then you point it to your destination ESX). I would like to know from folks that have already done so...what was your experience like? Did everything went smooth? Any caveats? I'm worried about the filesystem extended attributes (SELinux). Will it survive the migration? Or will I need to relabel the whole filesystem again? Thanks, Jorge

Yum problem on Centos 5.3 (64-bit)

Hello, I'm having a yum problem updating a system on Centos 5.3, 64-bit ... i.e. 'yum update' returns "No Packages Marked for Update". Problem appears to be related to connecting to the mirrors where the repositories are located but I could be wrong in that. What's confusing me is that I have another system (Centos 5.5, 32-bit) that's working fine. Disabling services in CentOS 5.5

Hello all, I have been doing some searching for information about disabling services within a CentOS 5.5 install. I have found a few different opinions, and wanted to ask for some feedback. First off, the system is running a LAMP stack to serve a web application. It will only be doing email to send occasional messages out (sent via the application only). It will not be receiving email for any users. It is an CentOS 5.5 (fully updated) install running under VMware (esx, I believe). We are not sharing directories via nfs or samba (either from or to this virtual machine). >From my research, the services that I am thinking of turning off are: nfs (already off) nfslock portmap rpccgssd rpcidmapd rpcsvcgssd apcid apmd mdmpd mdmonitor Is there any reason that I need to leave any of these services running? Are there others that I should disable as well? cameras and CentOS

Hi I want to put up a few cameras connected to a CentOS box. I currently have a box with one camera and that works (USB), I can take a pic (the script does that) and see that on a webpage. However, I want to have a couple of cameras a little further away (more than 5 meters). USB has a limit, I have tried that camera with a longer cable and it does not work ... so I need to route that in a different way. Are there equaly as cheap other moethods? I am currently running CentOS 4.5 (which, through many Yum updates) now appears to be CentOD 4.8. 4.8 is still rather old, but I havbe lots of stuff (files and stuff installed). I would like to install Fedora but I am worried about losing all the stuff I have. I would have to back everything up, uninstall/reinstall things, etc. I am wondering whether there is some way to upgrade to Fedora from CentOS without just having to reinstall everything? - Done.

Searching through the archives, it seems this topic has come up several times in the past 2.5 years. Did anyone ever take on the tasks of creating an official CentOS AMI? We're currently using the RightScale ones, but I think it'd be ideal to have a clean CentOS AMI with the current kernels. Karanbir, you seem to have been the one on CentOS side who has had the most conversations with Amazon. Is that conversation dead? If we had a small committee with members from this list, would that help in any way? Ranging from doing the bundling work, to utilizing our account reps within Amazon to help us push this along? johnny

Lessee, first I tried rpmbuild, and that failed, because it *required* xen-devel. So I grabbed the tarfile from /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES, unbzip2'd it, untar'd it, and did a make. And ten or so later, I had 265 kernel modules. I don't want or need to install all of that, so I tried just building gspca, and that failed with unresolved errors. Does anyone know if I can just install gspca*.ko, or even some subgroup of that, or is it dependent on other of the built modules? Two other notes: on an FC 13 box, I see that gspca literally comes with the kernel - does anyone have a clue whether part of that subsystem is available, or is that what I'm looking at, above? Finally, in googling, I found a UVC that's supposed to deal with most USB cameras. Does anyone know anything about it, or will I still need gspca? mark

recognizing correct number of cores on CPU

I just installed centos 5.5 x86_64 on a new HP laptop. It has the core i5 processor. only 1 cpu is detected should be 2. This has happened before. Is upstream not keeping up with new processors released and updating the kernel? I'd rather not go through the process again of putting a newer kernel on the machine and having something different out there than "stock" centos. Jerry

Hi, I'm currently trying to get a grasp on DNS and Bind. I admit the documentation is quite confusing, either too laconic or way too detailed. So I'm trying to start from a working example, and then bite my way through it. I have a sample named.conf file from Carla Schroder's Linux Cookbook. In the opening global options, I have this : listen-on { 127.0.0.1; 10.11.12.1; }; allow-recursion { 127.0.0.0/8; 10.11.12.0/24; }; As far as I understand, the purpose of these two stanzas is to limit access to the DNS server to 1) the server itself and 2) the local 10.11.12.0/24 network. In that case, there seems to be some redundancy in the syntax. Correct me if I'm wrong. Can someone please explain (in plain words) the exact meaning of these stanzas ? Thanks, Niki

cpuspeed settings??

Hey, folks, Sometimes my workstation bogs down... slows to a crawl. Using gkrellm, it's obvious the CPU is the laggard. The top utility confirms: the load average gets up over 4 at times. But this occurs when cpu stepping pegs the speed at 600MHz. This processor is capable of 1.5GHz and when it's allowed to run at that speed, the load average is under 2, which is fine. So the question is: what's a good /etc/sysconfig/cpuspeed file? This workstation is a notebook and it can get hot. Of course I'd rather type on slow machine than a machine with a fried mainboard, so a report of a high temperature should kick in the governor and lower the speed. Currently my /etc/sysconfig/cpuspeed has no variables defined (it's been this way at least since Apr 24) and I don't know what the number ranges and other values for them might be. Redhat CD with kickstart file

Hi, I am trying to create a custom iso that I can use to install machines. I want to include my custom kickstart file on the distro and when its put in get the system to build using it. I have done some reading about this process, but i still havent been able to get it working with out any problems. I have ripped the contents of the iso by mounting it on a loop back device. I then put my kickstart file names ks.cfg into /isolinux/ on the ripped cd. I then use mkisofs to recreate the iso, but every time i boot from it i get either "unknown keyword in config file", "could not find kernel image: linux" or "invalid or corrupt kernel image" error messages. Has anyone got a step by step guid to how to do this as this is driving me nuts! Hope someone can help. Thankyou!

NFS - Permission Denied

Hi All, This is the settings of my NFS server (192.168.10.55) /etc/exports: /nfs/iso 192.168.10.0/255.255.255.0(rw,sync)<http://192.168.10.0/255.255.255.0%28rw,sync%29> >From the remote host, I mount it correctly. But when I write/create files/directory inside the mounted nfs directory (from /nfs/test), it will give me "Permission Denied". I'm trying to do an update to some servers... and they have both i386 and x86_64 perl. The latter won't update, because the idiotic *man pages* are dups. Is there *any* way, short of using rpm directly with a --force, to get yum to ignore the dups and do the update? And why does *anyone* make it so that a dup manpage is a reason to fail (and don't tell me they do it generically for any of the packages in the .rpm...)? mark

CentOS-4.8 cyrus-imapd-2.2.12-10 sendmail-8.13.1-3.3 I have a mail hub which uses cyrus-imap with sendmail It has worked well for us on this and prior hosts going back to 1995. And, I do not have a problem with the current setup. What I would like to do however, is to deliver plus-formatted e-mail addresses directly to users subfolders in their mailbox tree. Such addresses take the form userid+subfolder+sub-subfolder(a)domainname.tld. How this is done I have not discovered. What I always get is an ".Address Unknown" smtp error. I have gone to both the cyrus and the sendmail lists respecting this issue. While there is a lot of information there following any of it does not seem to lead me anywhere fruitful. Does anyone here run a sendmail/cyrus-imap combination on CentOS that has direct delivery into user mailbox subfolders using the plus address format working? rpm - diff and patch updating

I am attempting to create a rpm of the latest version of a program. The rpm for the previous version contains a number of patch files that make numerous changes various files in the tar.gz as downloaded from the project's website so it will work properly on Linux. The latest version of the program has changed enough stuff that some of the patches now fail to apply. "1 out of 1 hunk FAILED" and so on. Upon comparing the previous version's files to the latest version, I see that the problem is that some of the files that need to be patched have had some stuff moved around a bit, just enough to (apparently) cause patch to fail. By way of experimentation, I manually changed one of the files in the new version to match what the patch says it should be, then created a new patch file from that and it applies and appears to work fine. (I patched the previous version's file, compared the result to the original and made the same change in the new version's file.) This method seems to work fine when the change is only one or two lines, but some of the patches are somewhat more involved than that. It seems to me that there may be an automated way to handle this matter by somehow patching a into b, then compare a and b and make corresponding changes in c. Basically the same process that I just tried manually on a small patch file, without all of the labour and chance of a screw-up that would be involved in manually comparing the old files and rewriting the new file. I have two questions: First, am I going about this the right way? And if so, is there a way to automate the process as described in the previous paragraph? Second, what is the proper convention for handling this in a rpm? The obvious solution seems to be to create new patch files and throw the old ones away, then build the rpm from that. Some of these patches appear to go back several versions, though, so is there a better or more proper way to handle this than just throwing them out and making a whole new set of patches? how to set up pam_oddjob_mkhomedir (samba and ldap)?

Hi, I do have a samba server up and running and users are authenticated by ldap. Login to the samba server works as long as the user has a home directory. Now if I create a new ldap entry for an user I'd like to use pam_oddjob_mkhomedir to create a home directory if it dose not exist on login. But something fails on my system. I followed the redhat faq http://kbase.redhat.com/faq/docs/DOC-3973 which may be wron according to that bugzilla entry. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=429524 So I added session optional pam_oddjob_mkhomedir.so skel=/etc/skel/ umask=0022 to /etc/pam.d/login using all other default settings and configs using the rpms provided by redhat EL 5.5 / Centos 5.5 rpm -qa|grep oddjob oddjob-0.27-9.el5 oddjob-libs-0.27-9.el5 the services are restarted, there are no errors in the log except from samba, that the login from the user fails because of the missing home directory. Dual personality Server (network pass through)

I have 3 nics in a NATed gateway file server. Two nics (eth1, eth2) provide dhcp and nfs services to an internal subnet via a dedicated switch. The other nic (eth0) connects to an external WAN switch to provide net access to the systems in the subnet. --- eth1 WAN switch eth0 --- | SUBNET switch --- eth2 Question: Is it possible to disable the NATing, nfs, dhcp and just somehow bridge the external WAN nic to the internal ones such that it's just a pass through? Basically having the server behave like a switch? Allowing the internal systems to join the network on the WAN. I know how to disable NAT, nfs and dhcp but not how to configure the nics. I know I could simply unplug eth1, eth2 from the server and plug them into the WAN switch but my goal is to script this so I don't have to physically plug and unplug network cables each time. Irritating quirkyness: we have a bunch of videocams. To use, we use gspca. Usually, on an upgrade, I just go into the gspca directory (which appears, from their website, to have not been updated since '07), make clean, make, make install. Having gone up to 5.5, did the same. The error, which is the status, *if* errno.h has any relation, says that it's an EXDEV, which suggests that it's trying to hard link across devices, which AFAIK it's not: the home directory for the user the device runs is is automounted, and it gets created there. Anyone have any clues why, all of a sudden, the first few packets are showing a status code? Could it be a timing issue? mark

problems building nfdump / nfsen

Hey folks, I posted this as part of another old thread but am starting a new thread for it because I got no response. I've also since found the nfdump mailing list but it seems to be dead. I was not able to find either of these guys in a CentOS repository anywhere, so I'm building them manually. Below was on CentOS 5.2. ---snip--- I'm going to kick this old thread because I'm just getting around to nfdump and nfsen myself, and am having trouble building nfsen. I do not see a mailing list for it so I'll try here first. I am using softflowd to pump netflow information from various linux boxes into a central collector. The collector is running nfcapd to capture everything. And I also want to run nfsen on this box to be able to view the pretty graphs on the web :-) I have verified with nfdump built on this box that the collector seems to be working fine - so far so good. Then when trying to build nfsen it complained about nfprofile not being there - so some googling later and I found that I have to go back and rebuild nfdump to include it. So I do : ./configure --enable-nfprofile which dies thus : [...] checking for stdint.h... yes checking for unistd.h... yes checking for rrd_update in -lrrd... no configure: error: Can not link librrd. Please specify --with-rrdpath=.. configure failed! But I check and I see I have librrd installed.
