Hi, A repository for MooseFS is just born. It provides CentOS 5.5 SRPMS, i386 and x86_64. cd /etc/yum.repos.d/; wget http://centos.kodros.fr/moosefs.repo ; yum install mfs Two points: - DNS may not be up to date where you are. The subdomain has just been created. Please be patient. - I have made an update to the .spec file, to move config files to /etc/mfs instead of /etc. I had no time to test it yet. I guess it works :) What is MooseFS ? MooseFS is a fault tolerant, network distributed file system. It spreads data over several physical servers which are visible to the user as one resource. yum downgrade working?

Hi, I recently accepted some updates that broke functionality due to a change in mapserver on my centos 5.5 box. I would like to try yum downgrade mapserver but when I do it goes through the motions and gives no output. What am I missing? Booting from a USB hard drive?

I'm trying to learn Asterisk (specifically Trixbox) and, as you probably know, it runs on CentOS. I want to run it on my laptop and thought that I could install it to an external USB hard drive, like I've done with Fedora 12 and Linux Mint 8 (I like to keep my small CentOS/Windows dual booting hard drive in the laptop's hard drive slot). But it won't work. It kept giving me hard drive errors when I tried to install it to the USB drive, so I installed it in the regular hard drive slot in the laptop -- where it works fine. But when I move it to the USB enclosure, it starts to boot, but can't mount the partitions and goes into kernel panic. I checked this with my CentOS hard drive and it does the same. I'm guessing the only reason Linux Mint works is because it refers to all partitions as "sda" instead of "hda" -- so it doesn't know it's in the wrong slot (just a guess). Is there an easy fix for this? Is there some configuration file that I can change entries from "hda" to "sda" so the partitions will mount or is it more involved than that? PHP file upload limit

Hi all, I am trying to run a web-based PHP application on a CentOS 5 32-bit machine that requires me to upload large files. The machine also happens to have little RAM (256MB). I have no problem setting my upload limit ( upload_max_filesize ) to 1 GB but for some reason 2 GB or above seems to be no go. Would anybody know why? Could it be one of the many 32-bit vs 64-bit issues? Thanks. Boris.

software raid - better management advice needed

Hi, I've used mdadm for years now to manage software raids. The task of using fdisk to first create partitions on a spare drive sitting on a shelf (raid 0 were my 1st of 2 drives failed) is kind of bugging me now. After using fdisk to create the same partition layout on the new drive as is on the existing drive and then using mdadm to finish every thing up is a little tedious. Any one have an idea how to have a sort of hot plug were I just swap out the drive and it rebuilds? - aurf

Service monitoring/"Monit"?

Has anybody here tried the "Monit" utility (http://mmonit.com/monit/)? I need to set up some kind of "watchdog" functionality for a custom service otherwise started via init (i.e. via a script in /etc/init.d + rc*.d links managed by chkconfig) and it seems like this system may give me nearly what I want. However, something that concerns me about it, is that it appears to take full ownership of the services it monitors, and pretty much bypass the init system, in that once I've told monit to watch a process, it makes not difference if the associated service is enabled or not (via "chkconfig") , and there is no good way to fully stop the service, besides removing the Monit config or disabling Monit itself. (Or maybe I can use special "monit" commands, too, but that means precisely that Monit "owns" the service, which I somehow don't quite like.) What I'd really like, is to have my process watched and restarted if it goes a way, but only if it had already been started via "init" or through the "service" command, or possibly direct execution of the "init.d" script. This also means it should be restarted if it crashes or if is stopped via a direct "kill", but not after "service <name> stop" or similar. Which might mean it all boils down to checking if, and only if, the pid file for the service already exists. (Does that make any sense?) So, does anyone know if there is a way to convince Monit to do this for me? Or alternatively, is there a different tool that might do the job? DHCP/DNS server for LAN with mainly Windows clients : Outlook Express vs. Webmail problem

Hi, I recently setup a CentOS 5 file server for a small LAN consisting of 15 Windows XP clients. The LAN is eventually expected to migrate to Linux, at least some of the client machines. The previous setup made by a local Windows-only computer firm was an unhealthy mix of static and dynamic IP addresses with conflicting adresses, etc. First thing I undertook was clean up this mess by setting up a DHCP + local cache DNS server on the Linux machine. Now the curious problem I have: IP addresses are attributed correctly, people can surf on the internet all right. But the only thing they can't seem to do is send mail with Outlook or Outlook Express. I have to revert to the ISP's DNS, but so I lose the benefit of local DNS. And I don't have the slightest clue as to why that is so. operation on the client is slow when openldap servers are down

md0 and moving to another system

Hi all, I thought to have tested this a while ago but I guess not. I have a Centos 5.3 system (call its SYSA) software raid 0, 2 disks. I have an identical system (SYSB) else were, so I pull one of my mirrors drives from SYSA and put it in SYSB as the only drive in SYSB. Upon but I get grub error. I boot in recuse mode (CD, linux rescue) and it attempts to mount the disk, but claims no partitions exists. I drop into a shell and mount it w/o issues. Running fdisk on the drive tells me its got 2 partitions which is true. I set this up as ext3, no LVMs, etc... with root and the other partition being swap. I've always thought that all I can do in the event of motherboard failure os to have a duplicate system around and merely move a dive off to it. - aurf

Hi, all. I'm trying to customize a CentOS installation cd, but got trouble with kickstart. I want to use dialog[1] for command line based user interface, but it can't display correctly in kickstart with CentOS 5.5. Same ks file works with CentOS 5.3 (both i386 and x86_64). What's the different between CentOS 5.3/5.5? I can't find it in release notes. And how can i fix it? Ok, I have to ask. I tried to yum install the latest openwebmail (from the openwebmail repo), and got a transaction check error about a conflict with some packages which are needed by amavisd and spamassassin (packages originating from rpmforge, I think). Intel ICH10R on CentOS 5.4

Hey there.. I was wondering if anyone could share experiences they have had with the Intel ICH10R SATA controller? I tried looking around but all I could find were RAID references, I have no interest in using the RAID functionality just basic SATA JBOD. Wondering if there are any gotchas for performance, drivers, quality etc. I normally don't touch anything that is not hardware RAID though this is a special project.. And even if I get demo gear I won't have enough time to put it through real paces(likely need weeks) before a decision needs to be made. I don't see anything that is causing alarm but just curious if anyone else has experiences. thanks nate

Plus at that point you might also be hitting problems with browser behaviour.... since you say it is a web app.... 2 gigs is a heck of a post... have you looked into any other solutions such as an uploader in flash or java capable of resuming transfers and streamed (partial) transfers rather than a single post? MAC address changes after cloning

Hi, I have x86 system and have used clonezilla to clone the entire hardisk of system A and restored it on another x86 system, system B. After the cloning process, i notice that the MAC address of the system B in the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 is changed and is having the MAC address of system A. The interesting part is that if i do an ifconfig from the bash prompt, the MAC address of the system B is correctly displayed, but in ifcfg-eth0 script it is different. I had disabled kudzu, since i was always getting eth1 activated on System B, even though i had used eth0 on system A. eth0.bak was getting created instead on system B. Disabling kudzu resolved it. My question is that how could i get the same MAC address for system B from ifconfig and in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0. Is there any script to do it ? According to http://www.rpm.org/api/4.4.2.2/specfile.html a Version: tag can contain a hyphen, as the tarball for the source I am compiling is named 2.3-pre4 etc. When I try to build it I get an error about the illegal char? Anyone know about the discrepancy between the docs and RHEL's rpmbuild? Without recreating a new tarball and bungling the name how does one gracefully handle this? Thanks! jlc

ls -lrt reversal

My CentOS box with: $ uname -r 2.6.18-164.6.1.el5 gets the file order wrong with: ls -lrt * . Two files that were last modified in the same second are shown in order that is the reverse of the order in which they were actually last modified. Note also that the later file was first created after the earlier file was last modified. Is the precision of this only to the second? Mike.

SOLVED annoying firefox crash on nvidia

A long time ago, there was thread about firefox randomly crashing. http://www.mail-archive.com/centos@centos.org/msg50010.html It turned out not only firefox, but random other X window applications as well. Especially scrolling in firefox seemed to induce the error. I'm now since almost 2 weeks up and running with the same firefox instance and scrolling up/down, left/right, playing video's, viewing websites with heavy javascripts whatever, and without any crash since. I use the proprietary driver NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-195.36.24-pkg2.run (the latest last time I looked). I believe the cullprit was to explicitly load some modules in the xorg.conf file. (It is probably the "extmod" module -- there is almost no real documentation on what those modules actually do...) While the nvidia driver installs, there is an utility that generates the new xorg.conf file for you, having only one module "glx" loaded. This seems to be source of the trouble. Gnome seems to assume more functionality is available, and does not gracefully recover when asking something that is not implemented in those extra modules. Since adding some more modules, I have no more crashes: Section "Module" Load "dbe" Load "extmod" Load "type1" Load "freetype" Load "glx" Load "fbdevhw" Load "record" EndSection And, as added benefit, or side effect, the memory usage of my gnome applets has drastically gone down. I used to see a simple clock-applet having using 800 Mbyte virtual memory or so and having 400M reported under the "resident memory" column. Other people also reported such a problem, but it was frequently dismissed by explanations like "gnome uses a lot of shared memory it is not real memory". Hi all, I'd like to try rolling a somewhat stripped down and customized CentOS DVD. This is particularly interesting to me now that CentOS 5.5 is 2 DVDs. I dare not call it a new distro as I suspect I will be the only one to use it. ;) I've been googling for ways to do this, figuring it must be somewhat straight forward, but my google-fu is weak it seems. Can someone point me to a how-to or doc on rolling your own CentOS derivative ISO? Also, I'm not talking about just rolling a new ISO, I can do that already, I want to update the list of RPMs (not)available to the installer. Thanks! PS - I found this link, but it's from 2006. Odd INFO "120 seconds" in logs for 2.6.18-194.3.1

Hi, Since upgrading to "2.6.18-194" I am getting odd messages in the logs. Such as; sraid3 kernel INFO task pdflush 259 blocked for more than 120 seconds. The output from > grep '120 seconds' /var/log/messages | tr : ' ' | awk '{print $10}' | sort | uniq -c 6 nfsd 4 pdflush This is from an NFS server that since the upgrade has been flakey. I have an identical server running "2.6.18-164.11.1" and no such messages are seen. is anyone else seeing this and/or know what is going on? Hi all, I am trying to boot from a HD created as a copy of a running system (and it doesn't work, and I don't understand why ...) The target root FS was restored with : tar xzpf $IMAGE -C /mnt/linux On the target root FS, I edited /etc/fstab and /etc/grub.conf, replacing any reference to LABEL=... by the real device (/dev/hda1 and so on). Every thing goes too quickly, so I can't see what is going on, until : ... Trying to resume from /dev/hda3 No suspend signature on swap, not resuming. Creating root device. Mounting root filesystem. mount: error mounting /dev/root on /sysroot as auto: No such device Setting up other filesystems. Setting up new root fs setuproot: moving /dev/failed: No such file or directory no fstab.sys, mounting internal defaults Then it complains about missing /proc and /sys, and end with : switchroot: mount failed: No such file or directory Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! /dev/hda3 is the swap partition on the new disk. The swap was in /dev/hda2 on the old disk, but fstab has been modified accordingly ; other FS are just like on the old disk (I mean, / is hda1, cache1 is hda5 and cache2 is hda6). Is every CentOS release supported for 7 years?

Hi, I've read some posts in the forums which seems to indicate that not every CentOS version is well supported. Is it possible to install CentOS 5.5 on a server and only apply security updates for 7 years? Or is the preferred way to upgrade to each minor version? Thanks in advance! 194 Kernel Panic; 164 is Fine; How Do I Debug?

I have a machine that has worked fine for years on CentOS5. kernel-PAE-2.6.18-164.15.1.el5 is the last "works fine" kernel, but kernel-PAE-2.6.18-194.3.1.el5 crashes at boot every time. I tried banging on the side of the monitor to no avail. Package Distribution Server?

Dear List, I'm trying to set up a lab with multiple workstations running CentOS 5. Does anybody knows how to keep the packages in sync among workstations? Ideally I want any change made on any machine be able to applied to all other machines. GRUB, and how do I loathe thee

I just adore the install. Esp. of GRUB. Does *anyone* who works on GRUB actually work in the real world, and not only on brand new machines? I just had happen at work what happened last fall on my home system: then, I had /dev/hda, and was trying a clean install on a new SATA drive; right now, I'm installing on a replacement disk on a server that has no CD/DVD drive from a USB key. My options: on my home system, it was MRR on /dev/hda (which was being replaced, and was to become my backup drive), and here, in the MBR of the USB key; in both cases, *only* in the first sector of a partition on the new drive. I am NEVER OFFERED THE OPTION of the MBR of the drive I'm installing to. *snarl* mark "no grub, then linux rescue, then chcon, then grub install... I hope"

Hello, I'm compiling a collection of stories from the systems administrator trenches. They can be short or long, funny or about a particularly challenging problem or period, or even something that appeared very technically challenging and ended up being something very simple. Stories which are more political would be ok so long as they do not have an agenda or can be interpreted as a public attack. I can't promise money but I can promise 15 minutes of fame. The stories will be accumulated over the next few months and go into a book about real world experiences of Systems Administrators and Systems Engineers. Some of the material may be used in our training classes, as well. All stories will be duly credited and I'll even buy a beer (or other non-alcoholic beverage) for anyone I ever meet in person. Stories may be edited for grammar or clarity. This book is still in the proposal stage so there is no firm target date, yet. If for some reason the book is not published (just like tech projects, books are sometimes cancelled at the last minute) they will go up on our website. redundant ldap - client config

Hi all, I have a few ldap servers slaved to a primary via syncrepl, all is well. I've set my clients to auth against a few and there /etc/ldap.conf looks like so; uri ldap://primary.domain.com ldap://secondary.domain.com However when either primary or slaves go down, while the clients can log in, access is very slow, ls of any dir is painful. The /var/log/messages shows several failed attempts to conect to the slaves ldap servers. Whats the proper way to set up redundant ldap on the clients?

update from 4.8 to 5.4?

I have searched the list, and don't see this covered or didn't search for the right words. I'm running CentOS 4.8 and have some DVD's for 5.4. I have a lot of customized and additional software installed and would like to avoid starting over with a scratch install. After the upgrade from the DVD I would do a yum upgrade to 5.5. Is this a workable (and safe) thing to do? What should I look out for? I plan to build a clone of the boot disk in case there is a problem so I can swap it back in to the hba1 position (as soon as I find a way to make a clone of a disk with LVM ). Recommendations for a webcam

hi, I am looking for recommendations for a webcam that works out of the box( or something that does not need major work getting going ) on CentOS-5. But I also need it to do : Better than 640x480, have the ability to work in low light and stream via vlc. I have a Philips SPC 900nc which looks good on paper, and just works, but its unable to really do better than 320x240 and its low light performance is quite sad. I've also tried using a logitech quick cam 9000 pro. Which suffers about the same fate. It does manage to get upto 640x480, but at a fairly average end result. Recommendations ? - KB

I think I found it...and I think it is a bug. Here is a file in usr/share/logwatch/default.conf/logfiles/cron.conf It appears this file tells it where to look for the cron file...and the cron file location is dead wrong. It should be /var/log/cron I believe. Dear all, After some trouble finding the right multipath.conf, I'm running Centos 5.5 against the SUN 7310 more or less successfully now. Unfortunately one issue remains: the SUN 7310 has two storage heads, H1 and H2, which are in a active/passive configuration. If I define a LUN on H1, everything works great. Workaround: when I remove the paths to the passive ("ghost paths") Storage head in the SAN Fabric, the system boots fine and I can re-enable the paths when the kernel is up. The paths become [active][ghost] as wished after some time when they show up in the FC Zoning. This smells like broken mkinitrd to me. Logwatch, cron, and dovecot

Howdy all, Question for anyone. I have centos 5.x on my server. Everyday I get a logwatch sent to my mailbox. I usually check every couple weeks and this time I got a surprise... Up until may 15th, the watch started with cron begin/ cron end and then went to http begin/end.... May 16th had the selinux (which I have disabled) and dovecot listings above the http begin. Cron was absent. Everyday after that is is all dovecot first, no cron. I never had dovecot show up in my logwatch before. So, I assume some update did something, but it was obviously 2 weeks ago or so. I have an auto update, so I am thinking it happened with a yum update. The selinux only happened that one time...not shown up since. I am concerned about the cron begin/end no longer being there, don't know why dovecot was not there to begin with.... Just did a reboot and will see what happens tomorrow... pup problem

Hello! On May 28, I had a problem with pup and seamonkey. I was doing an update via pup and reading a page via seamonkey; seamonkey froze with a plain brown screen. I waited awhile, and then did the press-the-power-button-until-it-shuts-off. However, I don't know whether it was seamonkey or pup that actually caused the freeze, but apparently pup did not do its updating job correctly. There's a number of icons that are missing, so (for example) open office won't start from the menu. Centos starts, but the desktop background doesn't appear (although I can select desktop background and get it to appear). Finally, attempts to attach anything to an email via seamonkey (17 or 2.04) or thunderbird show the requestor momentarily and then crashes seamonkey/thunderbird. Is there a log somewhere of what was updated (I didn't see it in /var/log/messages) and can I force pup to do the update manually? Any other suggestions for getting things back to normal? Can't print a pdf?

I just had a strange occurrence. I was printing out some PDFs and I pulled one down off the web (my wireless bill) and tried to print page 1. My browser properly fired up AR9, but nothing printed. I tried agian, still nothing. I saved the file, opened it with the Document Viewer and it can't print the file either. I tried opening it with GIMP, and it gets this error: Opening '/home/mhr/Documents/pdfs/vzwA0418.pdf' failed: Plug-in could not open image I couldn't find any related data in the logs (spooler logs are all empty, nothing in dmesg). I tried disabling and enabling the printer, then turning it off and on to no effect (which is not too surprising). Anyone have a clue where I should look or what to do? Thanks. mhr

While I was putting this together I saw lots of forum posts asking if anyone had tried it. Well we did here at our work and all looks great including running "memtest86" overnight. I have a fluid dynamics simulation running on it with 90% memory usage and all looks great. bogus bond0 device showing up in /proc/net/dev

I'm running into a situation where a bogus bonded interface named "bond0" is being created, in addition to the desired "bond2" interface. Can anyone confirm this? Anyone know why it's happening or what I do to get rid of it? I wanted to start my numbering scheme at 2 instead of 0, which I didn't think would be a problem. how to install ip6tables?

Hi all, I'm sorry if this is a quick dumb one, but how does one install ip6tables? We're looking for what, years ago, I'd describe a s a X terminal -- something small, simple (and ideally cheap) that a user could display X applications on. I guess they're now called thin clients, but they now seem geared as seats on the web, and for this application we would need to be able display the results of running a homebrewed X application from a CentOS system, either through xdm, or ssh with X forwarding, or vnc. Running CentOS too on the thin client would be nice, but not a requirement. The HP t5545 looks right for size and price, but I can't tell if it could support displaying arbitrary X apps.

Shutdown/poweroff does not power off machine

I've got a Dell Optiplex GX240 I am running CentOS 5.4 (kernel 2.6.18-164.9.1.el5.centos.plus)... When I had Fedora 11 and 12 on it, I could issue a poweroff command and the machine would power itself off. However, under CentOS it doesn't turn the machine off whatsoever. When it completes, the machine is still running with a message of "system halted." Then I have to physically hit the power button to turn it off... I believe at some point I did try to issue a shutdown command - but had the same results... Anyone have any recommendations or suggestions? Thanks ahead of time :) Scot P. Hi, I encounter a error when installing the latest kernel 2.6.34 in centos. Steps: 1. download source code. 2.tar -xvf 2.6.34.tar.gz 3.use the .config file of current system in /boot directory. 4.make ,make modules_install, make install, 5.reboot. 6.error:: accur. Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while ... Activating logical volumes Volume group "VolGroup00" not found Creating root device. Mounting root filesystem. mount: could not find filesystem"/dev/root" setting up other filesystems. ... After comparing the latest initrd.img and the current system initrd.img . The differnce below: the currenet system has more modules before excuting the LVM operations. these modules is dm-mem-cache.ko , dm-message.ko and dm-raid45.ko which depends the others. I know the centos 5.5 ' s kernel is 2.6.18. which has dm-raid45.ko module. I do not know which changes to 2.6.34 about LVM. I think the errro is about the LVM. Anyone can give me answer or advice. Setting up a printer without having one

Hi folks! :-) I am supposed to configure this fresh install of CentOS 5.5 to work nicely with the HP 1010 printer, once it gets connected to the computer (probably via usb, but I cannot be sure). The problem is that I will not be anywhere near the machine when the printer actually gets plugged in, and hp-setup refuses to do anything until that happens. So how does one configure a to-be-used-in-the-future printer, without actually having one plugged in? People who are going to use the machine are noobs, and unlikely to be able to set up the printer themselves, so it would be a good idea if I could do it in advance. I haven't done anything like this before, and would be grateful for any pointers. TIA! :-) Marko

xulrunner 1.9.0.19-1: Does it exist or what?

According to 'yum info xulrunner' version 1.9.0.19, release 1.el5_5 exists and is an available package. But when I try to update it, yum claims there is nothing to do and when I try a general update, yum complains that it cannot update firefox because it cannot find xulrunner >= 1.9.0.19-1. What is going on here? I am doing this on a desktop x86_64 system that I recently brought up to CentOS 5.5, using the DVD ISO I downloaded to my laptop. I'd like to finish this update, but I am having this strange problem. I am getting the same problem on my (i686) laptop. Just to answer the aspect of why people in IRC tell you to go to a mailing list – because mailing list answers are more permanent that IRC, and also, it spreads the knowledge of the question, and the answer over a much wider time frame rather than just the two to three sentences that are involved in fixing your situation. It also notifies the mailing list which is generally watched by the devs/patchers/genius(is)/workaround guys/people from other distros/generally smart people – who could probably help you work through the problem, or at least direct you to a page that can. These days people treat IRC like a street market for info, there are no rules other than do not paste more than 3 lines! (pastebin is your friend) and you can say what you like to who you like, and log off, without so much as contributing to the community. … At least by coming to the mailing list, or at least searching the archives, the effort that had previously been exerted to answer the question the first 20 times on the mailing list, will not be wasted. IRC has been around for a long time, but unless the irc server is irc.(project domain name here).org then expect it to be staffed by volunteers and people who may not have the same focus as yourself. IRC is just one of a number of resources. It a good spot for instant relief, (think street hooker), but the mailing list is your wife! *disclaimer* I do not advocate the use of street hookers, nor do I discriminate/have any negative feeling towards against those who do, or indeed are ☺ - I just wanted to make a point! Has anyone had any success in rebuilding seamonkey 2.0.4 for CentOS 5 (32-bit)? I'm currently running seamonkey-2.0-1 which I rebuilt last November. Sadly, I have no idea where the SRPM originated. metadata cache corruption: cleared -> fixing in progress

Hi, The big mess today in the 5.5/updates tree was caused by a cache corruption in the master CentOS tree during the metadata creation. <tech> createrepo is run with the --cachedir flag. Something went bad :( </tech> The wrong cached metadata for the last updates (see centos-announce mailing list) caused the issue you have all noticed today. We are sorry for that. I initially though that it was a out of sync issue, but I was wrong. The cachedir was cleared, new metadata generated and pushed to the main centos.org server and going down to the public mirrors. This script makes an rpc request in the server, but every time that script makes this request, I have this message in /var/log/messages: "kernel: svc: unknown version (0)" I´m not sure if this message is only a message or a problem that I have to fix. Hi All Currently i'm setting up a 5.4 server and try to create a 3rd raid device, when i run: $mdadm --create /dev/md2 -v --raid-devices=15 --chunk=32 --level=raid6 /dev/sdc /dev/sdd /dev/sde /dev/sdf /dev/sdg /dev/sdh /dev/sdi /dev/sdj /dev/sdk /dev/sdl /dev/sdm /dev/sdn /dev/sdo /dev/sdp /dev/sdq the device file "md2" is created and the raid is being configured. but somehow /dev/md2 is flushed when i reboot the system , same story if i create the file by mknod or MAKEDEV. does anyone know a way to solve this issue and permanently add md2 to devices? In order to get an OpenOffice configuration that is closer in compatibility with MS Office 2007, I removed the standard OO in 5.4 via yum and installed the latest (3.2.0) from OpenOffice.org. Ran that config for many months without a problem. However, when I allowed the upgrade to 5.5, OO broke. I finally had to remove all traces of OO 3.2.0, and start over. That worked...until yum tells me that there are updates to apply, which includes an OO update. Not thinking, I allowed the updates and the OO update broke OO 3.2.0 again. The update is: openoffice.org-ure-3.1.1-19.5.el5.x86_64 updates openoffice.org-ure-1.6.0-9483.x86_64 I had to repeat the removal and reinstallation of OO to recover. Now I watch the updates more closely and don't allow the OO update to come in. Not complaining...just a warning to the community of the challenge one often encounters by running software that is not part of the standard distribution. Dave M

Postfix 2.3.3 that comes with RH/CentOS is very old, there are lots of new features in newer versions that appear to be very useful (revised queue manager with better scheduler as far back as v2.5, etc.). Latest stable version is 2.7. I was looking for RPM packages and I've found this site: http://ftp.wl0.org/official/ Anybody using it? Good things, bad things?... Multipathing with Sun 7310

Dear list, we have a relatively new Sun Storage 7310, where we connect CentOS 5.5 Servers (IBM LS21/LS41 Blades) via Brocade Switches, 4GBit FC. The Blades boot from SAN via qla2xxx, and have no harddisks at all. We want them to use multipathing from the very beginning, so /boot and / are already seen by multipathd. Problem is, that the Sun 7310 has two storage heads which run in active/passive mode. BUT the multipathd thinks, they are active/active and therefor shows half the available paths as faulty (multipath -ll below) While this probably gives me the redundancy that is desired, it is a relatively messy situation, since it will be unnecessary hard to detect real path failures and the OS is complaining about "readsector0 checker reports path is down" which gives me >40M/24h /var/log/messages garbage. Any hints for a reasonable configuration? Replacement tape drive configuration

CentOS 4.8 Hi All: We recently had a Sony SDX-500V tape drive fail on one of our servers running CentOS 4.8. I have now replaced it with a spare SDX-500C. The problem that I am having now is that the failed drive had ceased responding to SCSI commands and we have since rebooted the system which resulted in the tape drive being removed from our current hardware configuration and the system does not recognize the new tape drive. I know that I can just reboot the system and kudzu will add the tape drive back in during the boot process however I was wondering if it would be possible to manually run kudzu to add the drive or am I just "borrowing trouble" by trying to do this? sendmail and relaying

I think my sendmail is not correctly set. It says the default is to disallow relaying. I am running centos 4.8 and I think sendmail is relaying for anything. Based on this: http://www.sendmail.org/~ca/email/chk-89f.html#RELAYING I added|: FEATURE(relay_hosts_only) to my sendmail.mc file and restarted sendmail. I am still seeing connects that get relayed and are not in my /etc/mail/access file. Is there something else I am missing? Thanks, |Jerry

Returns unknown user <snip> Assuming you have set up both server and client, I would try the following: 1) Don't use nscd until you can confirm basic auth to the Ldap server is working. 2) Enable logging on the Ldap server. Afair, CentOS defaults to loglevel 0, which is no logs. Try something like loglevel 256. 3) Try to authenticate from a client while tailing the server logs. That should give you an idea of whether the client is even reaching the server, and if so what sort of error is occurring. Btw you didn't mention if you were doing Ldap over tls, but that adds another point of failure. Selinux alerts are in /var/log/audit/audit.log The problem is if smbd doesn't create the messages.tdb file then it won't have the selinux rights.
