printer frustrations

I've got an old HP LaserJet 1018. It's a winprinter. After I bought a new router (to go inside the Verison one), I plugged it directly into my box (ok, via a hub). I run CentOS 6. Before we went on the trip, I could print, I upgraded my system, and this is the first time I'm trying to print... and no joy. I've tried sending the firmware to it via lp -o raw ... -h :9100, and maybe? it worked, but no printing. I've upgraded to the latest foo2jzs driver and .ppd, and nothing. Any ideas? CUPS since to think it can talk to it.... Yes, the system can see the printer.... mark

Hi, Yesterday i tried to install centOS 8 on my little router and server, but there's no ethernet listed there. I'm using Compaq pressario V3737TU which come with Marvell PCI-e ethernet 100Mbps. It's an old laptop. Could anyone here help?

I am trying to find libssh2.h In the past I installed libssh2-devel I have libssh2 installed. I have tried yum install libssh2-devel - nothing found yum provides "*/libssh2.h" - nothing found yum search libssh2.h - nothing found. Thoughts ? Jerry

Hello, Please can anyone help with the problem below when trying to install CentOS 7.6 on an IBM x3500 M3 from DVD or USB. CentOS 7.5 installs perfectly with no errors. CentOS 7.6 tries to boot, an error is output briefly and the workstation powers down. CentOS 7.7 displays the error briefly then continues the install with no further errors. Installing Maven with OpenJDK 11, without pulling OpenJDK 1.8

Hello, I am trying to create a container image which will build Java software with Maven and Java 11 (rather focussing on CentOS 8 here). When installing 'maven' with yum, 'java-1.8.0-openjdk-devel' is installed as a dependency. If one then installs 'java-11-openjdk-devel', and use the update-alternatives command for java and javac, everything works fine and Maven uses Java 11 for the build. But I would like to avoid shipping OpenJDK 1.8 with the image, since it would uselessly double its size. An approach would be to install Maven manually, but it feels better to use the provided package. Looking at the spec file, I understand that the 'maven' package requires 'java-devel' without explicitly specifying a version. Is there some way (configuration, yum option, alternative, etc.) to make OpenJDK 11 satisfying this dependency? Could the new modules / app stream approach of CentOS 8 help here? This is of course a more general RPM / yum question, but I suspect that the Java use case is a recurring one, as many of us are currently upgrading from 1.8 to 11. DHCP server failover: advise is needed

Dear Experts, I was running ISC DHCP server for longer than I would care to remember. Now I decided to climb out of the cave and configure failover set (primary-secondary), and I seem to hit brick wall, which I need help with. I only need IP v4, no v6, which may simplify things. Could someone point to a description of working DHCP failover configuration? I do not want to make two independent DHCP servers handling half of the pool each. We are not that rich as far as IP space is concerned. I am not married to ISC DHCP server, so any one I will do, because: <rant> My current configuration is something that was gradually migrated and/or adjusted through several generations of systems, and server versions over the years. It works. When I tried to incorporate what I need for failover following ISC documentation, and some people's guides, I discovered, I need more sophisticated structure of sections and subsections, which I figured out finally. But the annoying part was: in ISC documentation I failed to find general stricture of which section can appear inside which; like: a { b { c { } } } You can create each of sections/subsections following documentation, but to put them together making consistent config file you (I at least) have to figure on your own which section goes inside of which. </rant> So, I am not married to ISC DHCP server, we didn't get along now as far as my use of documentation is concerned. Anything that works - with failover! I am going to have it set up on FreeBSD, but if something works on Linux, I likely will be able to reproduce it on FreeBSD. Hi All, I am 'trying' to set SMART_HOST in sendmail to point to smtp-relay.gmail.com but when looking at the /var/log/maillog its going to mx203.inbound-mx.net. [192.110.255.243], why??? my line from sendmail.mc define(`SMART_HOST', `smtp-relay.gmail.com') I did make in /etc/mail and service sendmail restart This is the only SMART_HOST in the config file. I started with the default CentOS 7.7 sendmail.mc and have not added anything else. just changed teh SMART_HOST. Why is mail relay to mx203.inbound-mx.net ???? I would start by looking at the .cf file to make certain that it got written out correctly. You should find lines like: # "Smart" relay host (may be null) DSsmtp-relay.gmail.com If that looks right, then see what happens when you do dns queries for "smtp-relay.gmail.com" on that machine.

can't login as subsequent FreeIPA users

When I set up a machine with CentOS 8, I used the "Enterprise Login" in the initial setup wizard to authenticate against my FreeIPA server. This worked fine, and I have no issues logging in with that initial user. However, I am unable to use GDM or the console to login as any *other* valid user from FreeIPA. From GDM I get something like "Sorry, that didn't work" and "Permission denied" on the console. I've verified that the credentials are correct, and that I am able to manually get a ticket via kinit for one of those other users from this machine. With CentOS 7, I didn't have to do any additional configuration in this regard after the initial wizard. Not sure whether this is a CentOS configuration issue or a FreeIPA one, but I figured I'd start here. I'm also not terribly familiar with FreeIPA, so I could be missing something obvious; but this worked without issue when the machine in question ran CentOS 7. Can somebody point me in the right direction?

C8 and NetworkManager problem

Hi list, I've installed C8 on my workstation. I configured my network devices (two bridges, two nics) using nmcli. Now that NM is the default I tried it. On C7 I always disabled it. I noticed some problem: 1) During the boot, also if NetworkManager-wait-online.service status is OK, I noticed that opening a terminal and ping some address it needs some time to perform ping and any operation on a network connection. So seems that in the first 30sec/1min there isn't an available network connection. After this time if I run a ping or whatever network is available. 2) Due to the problem 1, It cannot mount samba shares on boot saying "Not suitable address found". After the network is available I can mount samba shares. 3) I noticed that with NetworkManager a bridge must have an address. If I don't specify an address for the bridge, NM will try to assign some address, enable the connection forever (reporting errors in messages and on notification bar). 4) NetworkManager-wait-online slow down boot time and network availability. To solve this problem I installed network-scripts and disabled NetworkManager but I don't understand why NetworkManager need so much time to enable a connection. Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance.

I am running this command /usr/libexec/qemu-kvm -no-acpi -smp 4 -m 2048 -drive file=myimg.img,format=raw -vga std -device rtl8139 and expecting a window to open up for the console. It does not. This is on CentOS 8. Do I have something missing/not installed - or something wrong on the command line. Jerry

CentOS7 sometimes don't detect NIC after reboot

I have brand new PC with this components: CPU Intel® Pentium G5400, LGA1151 motherboard ASUS PRIME B360M-C 16 GB RAM HDD 2x ADATA SSD 256GB XPG GAMMIX S11, PCIe Gen3x4 M.2 2280 (RAID1) NIC Intel X550-T1 Ethernet Converged Network Adapter I installed CentOS 7 and two NICs were detected: eno1 (on motherboard) enp1s0 (Intel X550-T1) When I restart the machine sometimes enp1s0 is missing. It is not detected during boot. It looks like NIC card is not installed / not present. After next reboot everything is fine and I do not see any problems with NIC card. How can I avoid this problem with missing NIC? Can you help me, please? Miroslav Geisselreiter

Mirroring two screens for all users?

We would like to have one workstation (CentOS7 with Gnome3) set up that has mirrored/cloned screens for all users that may login The workstation is using an Nvidia (proprietary) driver for the graphics card. We have set up xorg to use cloned screens, but gdm/Gnome3 appears to ignore these setting and only use what is set in ~/.config/monitors.xml We've set up /var/lib/gdm/.config/monitors.xml with mirrored/cloned settings for the login screen, but when a user logs in, the display switches to spanning both screens Is there any way we can force all user logins to use cloned displays on this one workstation (but not affect any settings they may use on other workstations - all users has NFS mounted home directories) ? Virtualizing on CentOS 8

I am trying to get going with CentOS 8. In the past I would run qemu-system-x86_64 -hda myfile.img get a console and off we go. I dont with to use virt-manager and the gui and all - I just wish to have a similar command line to boot up and run my img. Is there something like that I'm not finding ? I have found virsh - but I dont see how to make it run with an image file from the command line. Perhaps I'm missing something. Thanks, Jerry

icedtea-web package included with the distros is the plugin that handles javaws for firefox for both RHEL/CentOS 6 and 7 and openjdk. I have yet to find an app that cannot use openjdk instead of oracle java. It may be a little less streamlined, but it's functional. Ignore/cancel any pop ups that talk about updating java. If I missed this answer, I apologize as I receive the digests. Despite the article I mentioned being from 2011, it seems that Debian 10 still supports the logging of when cron jobs end. Looking into this further it seems that Debian uses anacron, and then applies a patch which provides the '-L' option. I have raised this with the cronie project on github to try and see why this feature has not been implemented. (It may well be that there are good reasons for it having not happened.) A very quick look at the cronie code seems to indicate it may be possible to implement. Place to run script command for all user/sessions

Hi all, I would like to record user commands in terminal mode for remote supporters. I currently do that with the command "script - make typescript of terminal session". So far so good as long as I run a combo os screen/script at the command prompt, allow remote worker to control screen session and then at the end I do ctrl-d to save the script session. This however do not work (or at least is not practical) when I want to allow someone to login via SSH directly and unattended. What will be the place to insert "script" in order to call it for each login/logoff and sudo executions? As an alternative for my fellow coworkers I have setup a Windows 10 PC with putty and Teamviewer/AnyDesk on it. Remote supporters go into the Teamviewer/AnyDesk pc and then SSH using putty into the specified Linux box. Putty is setup as to record the entire session automatically. Linux boxes dont have GUI. Linux Boxes are Centos 7 x64 and only 3 are Centos 8 x64. Thanks for your comments. -- --------------------- Erick Perez ---------------------

Cron - log when job ends?

Hello, In trying to resolve a problem with a cron job, we can see when the job starts by looking in the /var/log/cron log file. However, I was asked if when the job ends could also be logged. (It seems to be something that crops up every so often over the years.) I found on the 'net this article https://serverfault.com/questions/248915/crontab-is-there-any-log-with-begi… which mentions a loglevel (-L) option, and by setting this to 2 it will log when a cron job ends. It sounds great, and just what we could use. The downside is that there seems to be no such option anymore. The article is several years old but the users says they are using anacron. Checking on both a CentOS 7 and Fedora 31 system, which both use cronie-anacron, I could find no mention of any loglevel. Does anyone know what happened to this option (why it was removed)? It would seem to be useful, but removed at some time. C8 Questions

Hi all, I've several questions about C8. I'm using 8 on my personal NAS and works very well. I'm running several VMs with centos 8 and noticed something: 1) Why corosync, pacemaker and pcs are missing on C8? They are only available on rhel with payments( rhel ha addons)? 2) Why there is only Gnome as available DE? I use centos on my workstation and I'm a kde-plasma user. XFCE is ok but not gnome. I tried fedora, it has all software that I need and it is a very good distro but I don't like too much update and its EOL (upgrade/reinstall every 13 months on a workstation is not so good for me). I don't want to be forced to install another stable distro like debian (This not means that debian is bad but I prefer centos). 3) I have a VM with C8 installed. I got several updates but I don't receive any update for 8 on centos-announce like for previous versions (6 & 7). Something has changed? 4) EPEL. I know that EPEL is a Fedora SIG but I use several packages from EPEL. There is a place to see what packages will be included in EPEL? For example, I tried to install audacious from epel but got errors for missing deps. Seems that EPEL8 is released but not ready. There is a ETA for this? 5) It's my impression or there are less packages in this release? 6) Why cockpit installed by default? 7) Why repo PowerTools was created? What is the main purpose? 8) Why NetworkManager is the default method to configure interfaces? I know that I can install network-scripts but I don't understand this change. Best regards, Alessandro.

How do you know when a Linux system has been compromised? Every day I watch our systems with all the typical tools, ps, top, who, I watch firewall / IPS logs, I have logwatch setup and mailing daily summaries to me and I dive deeper into logs if something looks suspicious. What am I missing or not looking at that you security gurus are looking at? I subscribe to the centos and SANS newsletters, and I try to keep current on all technology with credible sources of articles online and with the Lynda library. What other sources of information do you use to stay current about the latest threats and technology updates? I appreciate the feedback. Chris

Hello. I'd like to ask about license issue. Now I'm planning to make and sell some measurement system controlled by PC. There is no technical issue but I don't have enough information about license. I will do the following, 1) Install CentOS and my applications on the PC. 2) Sell the PC as a measurement device. 3) Distribute DVD made from CentOS iso image file to the user if he/she needs. Question 1. Is there no problem from the view point of CentOS license ? Question 2. Should I donate to CentOS community ? Best Regards.

printer only prints one page, if anything

I've got a Brother HL-L2360D series printer connected to Centos 7. CUPS lists it as Generic PCL6/PCL Printer - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.9 . When I tell it to print a pdf file, it prints at most the first page. After powering the thing off and turning it on again, it printed page 3 of pages 3-6 . On trying it again, the thing claimed it was receiving data and printed page 3 of pages 3-6 again. I've tried to delete the printer so I could add it again, but CUPS won't let me. CUPS quit asking for a password, it just says Forbidden. How do I print the pdf file? How do I keep this from happening again? This is not the first time I've had to do a deep dive into CUPS or something to get printing done. I gave up on HP printers because I had to buy new cartridges practically every time I wanted to print. Only being able to print the first page, if anything, is not much of an improvement. Centos 8 server rebooting...

Can someone provide some guidance with my server, I have a fairly new centos 8 server, pretty much just a KVM host but I have noticed that its dumping and rebooting at various times. Journalctl does not go back past the reboot so I am unable to catch what may be causing it, it appears to be KVM from /var/log/messages and it appears I should have a kernel dump file but I am unable to find it. I had these same kvm images running on the centos 7 server for over a year at a time, not sure what is making things less stable. Any help would be appreciated, thanks. I just built a CentOS7 system on a Zotac NANO PC. I used a 320GB 2.5" HD I had sitting around and installed with Standard Partitions on XFS. The drive is spinning, nonstop. How can I monitor if there is actually disk i/o to warrant this constant spinning. So noatime for all partitions work with XFS? I did some browsing and the claim is XFS uses realtime which is better? than noatime? Perhaps it is just occasional writes to messages (at least 1 a minute) that determines to keep on spinning. But it is annoying.

OK. That is interesting. I am assuming tps is transfers per sec? I would have to get a stop watch, but it seems to go a bit of time, and then a write. Is there something that would accumulate this and give me a summary over some period of time? Of course it better NOT be doing its own IOs... Need help modding src.rpms to generate complete SAMBA AD DC binary RPMs for CentOS 8

When RHEL8 and CentOS8 were released, I was looking forward to setting up SAMBA as a AD DC server for CentOS8. But when I lifed the hood on the samba.spec file I found the option to build the samba-dc binary rpm has been disabled for rhel family builds. Apparently Red Hat does not want to support a unified SAMBA AD DC environment. I believe we have all of the componentns needed to set up a fully up-to-date samba-dc binary. But it's been decades since I last rolled up my sleeves with my hardbound copy of "Maximum RPM" and built custom binary rpms. Has anyone already done this as a COPR or similar project? Failing that, I'm willing to work with anyone with more up-to-date rpmbuild tools to create and document the process. --Doc Savage Fairview Heights, IL

I've just tried a yum update on one of my C7 boxes and got the following output. I'm guessing to fix this I need to re-install the RPM, but I can't remove it because of dependancies, so how can I fix the problem? I've managed to download a later version of the RPM, but haven't managed to find the same version as the one installed. Possible Font problem with CentOS 7

Hi, I've got a possible font problem with a fully updated CentOS 7 system. An example with the man command. #man kill Should return the following KILL(1) User Commands KILL(1) NAME kill - terminate a process SYNOPSIS kill [-s signal|-p] [-q sigval] [-a] [--] pid... kill -l [signal] but what I actually get is the following KILL(1) User Commands KILL(1) kill - terminate a process [ signal| ] [ sigval] [ ] [ ] pid... [signal] Notice the missing text. If I select the text and paste it into an editor I see the missing text. So it's there just not displaying on the screen. I also notice the effect with links embedded in e-mails. I use evolution. Embedded links do not appear in the e-mail but if I hover over a link location then it appears in the text box at the bottom of the page and I can select it. I learned from the Centos-devel email list that they aren't sending out email to centos-announce for updates to CentOS 8, but only updating an RSS feed. I think this is a bad idea since no one uses RSS anymore (ducks for cover). PL2303 Device With HP PID get garbage data after plug-in

Hello I installed CentOS 8 on a clean system.I tested a pl2303 ic with different PID. If i use HP PID 0x4349,i will receive junk data after connecting, but the pl2303 PID 0x2303 work normally. Is it possible with "chage" to configure a password caducity for, at most, 2 hours? I think "chage" only allows caducity for, at least, one day.

CentOS-8 not loading nf_conntrack module

Hi, On my CentOS-8 box firewalld will not start. It appears to be because the nf_conntrack module cannot be loaded. I saw on the net that a similar issue occurred on C7, but I couldn't find the solution. What is going wrong? Any ideas? Spacewalk 2.9 Sync Status bar not showing progress

Is this a known bug? I cannot get the Snc Status to show progress on the Channel Repositories -> sync page. I must tail -f the logfile to monitor progress which is ok but the status bar works on my 2.8 server. udev on CEntOS7 - can't get a match, looking for tips...

The mtx binary requires my tape library to be assigned a sg# driver, but the kernel periodically renumbers the sg devices. Normally, we would write a udev rule to manually assign a persistent name, but it looks like things have changed as I can't seem to get a match on CEntOS7. I'd appreciate any feedback or pointers to help me get my rule working. NFS shutdown issue

Hi all, I have an odd interaction on a CentOS 7 file server. The basic setup is a minimal 7.x install. I have 4 internal drives (/dev/sd[a-d]) configured in a RAID5 and mounted locally on /data. This is exported via NFS to ~12 workstations which use the exported file systems for /home. I have an external drive connected via USB (/dev/sde) and mounted on /rsnapshot. I use rsnapshot to back up the RAID5 to the external drive periodically. I also export /rsnapshot (read only) to the workstations so users can grab a backup copy of /home data if needed. These two mounts (/data and /rsnapshot) should be independent of each other. However, a couple of times now I've had somebody accidentally unplug my backup drive (sde), which causes NFS to shut down. CentOS 8 apcupsd or nut and duplicity

Hello Again, Is there any update on nut or apcupsd for CentOS 8? Also, I noticed that duplicity is not currently available for CentOS 8. I got the Fedora 30 SRPM for duplicity to build on CentOS, but ran into a dependency issue and cannot find python-devel. Any suggestions on alternatives or how to get duplicity going on CentOS 8? I usually start by setting up a new account and unset all SHELL variables in said account. I then see if the problem occurs. HW update. Fedora 30 to Centos?

Due hardware update. Many years on Fedora, would like to swap out to AMD motherboard( x570) and graphics (RX480) I'm led to believe that Fedora Linux is too 'new' for Centos. Question for those with experience of both, what will I miss on Centos wrt Fedora? Not all that bothered about being 'up to the minute', and after 20+ Fedora installs it does get to be a drag... CentOS 8 and DELL 7540 Intel AX200 WIFI

Hello all, I recently bought a brand new Dell Precision 7540 laptop. Before buying I checked the specifications from the RedHat hardware list and they said that it was "fully RedHat 8 Certified" and listed all the hardware that was "certified" to work with that laptop. https://access.redhat.com/ecosystem/hardware/3979771 I have had good results the last few years with Dell and CentOS, all the equipment has worked fine. However, this time, I got the laptop, installed CentOS 8, and the built-in ethernet port works fine but the Intel AX200 Wifi is not recognized and doesn't show up, so I can't use WiFi, but everything else seems to be working fine. I verified that it *does* work under Windows 10, so the hardware is there and works fine, it just is not recognized and configured under CentOS 8. I called Dell Tech Support and they said "since you didn't buy RedHat 8 from us then we can't help you". Is this just a temporary problem that an update will soon solve or is this something that needs to be brought to the attention of RedHat? Should I file a bug report with bugzilla.redhat.com or is there something I'm not doing or need to do correctly to get it to work? Or is there some package I'm missing that will enable it? I was a bit flabergasted because I've gone for so many years without having to do anything special, it all "Just Works (TM)" on my previous computers. When I use "ls -al" on a directory, for files with only owner read/write permission, the displayed attributes are "-rw-", not "-rw-------". That means the file names don't line up with other files in the directory, which makes the listing harder to read. What changed where and how do I fix that?

Have "system"/Hunspell dictionaries stopped working in CentOS 7 Firefox?

Until quite recently, multiple spell-checker languages were available in Firefox on my CentOS 7 system. (They could be selected from "Languages" under the right-click menu in text boxes.) After a recent system upgrade, there is only "English (United States)". I don't think I had installed any extra Firefox dictionaries as such, but the "global" spell-checking support is set up to support a few extra languages via hunspell-<lang> software packages. I believe Firefox used to be able to pick these up - probably through a link from /usr/lib64/firefox to /usr/share/myspell that the CentOS firefox package provides. Did I get that right? Has the mechanism stopped working? Is there any way to re-enable the system dictionaries? Note that I get all the expected dictionaries in Thunderbird, which appears to rely on a similar hack. My Firefox is "firefox-68.1.0-2.el7.centos.x86_64". Thanks. - Toralf

smart card auth

I updated my work desktop to kernel-3.10.0-1062.4.1.el7.x86_64 yesterday as I was leaving. This morning booted into that new kernel I was unable to login using my common access card. Rebooted in the previous kernel (3.10.0-1062.1.2.el7.x86_64) and smart card login works fine. Anyone else seeing any similar problems? UEFI and PXE

We have a working PXE setup. I've tried to adapt it to UEFI as per RHEL6 manual, but the client won't boot. Strangely, tcpdump shows that the client tries to download all files via tftp from the dhcp server rather than the tftp server (they are different). next-server is pointing to the tftp server. Any clues?

Putting together a system build, AMD based. Ryzen 5 CPU on X570 chipset with Radeon RX480 GPU. Guessing this will be supported by Centos OK? Conky on CentOS 8

Hi I've been using conky in conjunction with gcalcli on Scientific Linux 7 to display google calendar data on screen. In CentOS 8, I have set up the gcalcli part, but I can't find a conky rpm. Is anyone working on creating this for CentOS 8? There appears to be an rpm for fedora 28 onwards, but there are dependency issues. Can anyone help? -- Cheers Bill

CentOS 8: what changed (regular UNIX admin commands)?

Hello Experts! I'm sure many of you run CentOS for some time already. My question is: is there some place that lists which of the most often used sysadmin commands are gone and what are replacements for them. Or what else one needs to do after successful installation. (in the past it was process accounting that was not enabled by default, but which gives you quite some handle in investigating compromise). I just tried quite ordinaly command of freshly installed CentOS 8: last and got an error: last: (default utx db): No such file or directory I realize that it could be just me, and I'll cope with that myself one way or another but this one prompted me to ask everybody: Is there anything I can read so I can learn what differenmt to expect on CentOS 8 from, say, CentOS 7? rsync: did not see server greeting.

Hallo, until last week I used a debian system for syncing debian and centos mirrors. Everything worked fine for years. After installing centos 7 rsync doesn t work any longer. The configuration of the firewall is the same as before. The message I see is rsync: did not see server greeting. Has anyone a hint for me? Are ther any main differences between rsync debian and rsync centos? Thanks Ralf

moving from centos 8 to stream? (and possibly back again?)

just installed stock centos 8 x86_64 and did "dnf update", now reading up on centos stream, and wondering: 1) can i, at any time, decide to convert this system to centos stream, notwithstanding any normal updates i've done in the meantime? 2) if i'm running centos stream and decide it's just too progressive for me, can i dial it back to "regular" centos down the road? rday -- ======================================================================== Robert P.
