I have centos 5.4 on an HP laptop, as below the /proc/cpuinfo shows Dual core, however, there is only 1 processor listed in /proc/cpuinfo. Installing from USB flash drive

I successfully created an install media on a USB flash drive, but now I have a minor problem installing from it. Whenever I run the installer, it insists on installing grub on /dev/sdb (the flash drive) rather than /dev/sda (the hard drive where I'm installing everything). Is there a way to convince the installer to put grub in the right place? Should I just tell it not to install grub and then do a grub-install from a rescue prompt afterwards? -- Bowie

Having trouble with LDAP Authentication...

I¹ve google and searched, and have had very little luck... I have: 1. Installed all the packages. 2. Configured and have running OpenLDAP. 3. Migrated my passwd/shadow/group/hosts files into the directory 4. Tested the directory using ldapsearch 5. Installed LAM (web interface to LDAP authentication) 6. Added a user using LAM. 7. Confirmed user is in directory. 8. Confirmed user is not in /etc/passwd 9. Confirmed using ³getent passwd | grep username² that the user is listed. 10. Confirmed using ³getent passwd² shows two records for each user except ldap-only users (one for /etc/passwd, one for LDAP). However, ³id username² Returns unknown user And trying to log in as username at either the terminal or ssh fails, and upon examining the logs, the error message says unknown user. I configured /etc/pam.d/system-auth using authcongfig-tui, adding only the pam_mkhomedir.so line (and I tried it without that line as well). Everything seems right but its not working. Can anyone offer any suggestions as to where I should be looking? If necessary, I¹ll post my /etc/openldap/slapd.conf, /etc/openldap/ldap.conf, /etc/pam.d/system-auth, and /etc/nsswitch.conf files I just didn¹t want to send them if not necessary. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Hi All, How can it be done it logrotate configuration that I wanted to have the logs in six (6) month retention period? I have the following logs and directories of mysql. raid resync speed?

Has anything changed in updates that would affect md raid1 resync speed? I regularly swap a 750G drive and resync to keep an offsite copy and haven't paid enough attention to known when things changed but it seems to take much longer to sync than it did months ago, even if I unmount the partition and stop most other processes that might compete with it. -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

LSI software raid with centos 5.4

Hi, I have been trying to install CentOS 5.4 on a Intel SR1530SHS, Intel S3200SH mainboard.. It has a 3 x 1TB sata hotswap drives with LSI software raid onboard. I had configured the LSI to have Sata0 and Sata1 with raid 1 and the third drive as a hotspare drive. Format the harddisk and installation was a breeze. The server rebooted into a blank screen and the cursor just keep blinking. Please advise. Thanks wL

Unable to execute a script , Permission denied

Hi I have a linux box which has CentOS running in it. I logged into the box using root and wrote a script in the /home/proc_threads directory. saved the file and quit. I changed the file permissions such that any user could execute it using the "chmod 777 filename" command. When i log out and log in as a non-root user i was not able to execute the script though. Could some one please help in this regard. I am a newbie to linux. Thanks Jatin

Odd failure of smbd to start from init.d - CentOS 5.4

Hi, We've got a fresh CentOS 5.4 box, and the only glitch so far is that /etc/init.d/smb doesn't start smbd. It claims it does - shows "[ok]" - but only nmbd ends up running. Even setting a higher debugging level in the smbd flags, nothing logs or shows on the console as to why smbd is immediatly quitting. To make it stranger, doing this works fine: . /etc/init.d/functions daemon smbd -D That's the core of how the /etc/init.d/smb file is set up to start it. Except from there it's not working - despite the reported "[ok]". Anyone seen this, or have advice on how to debug it? Thanks, Whit

Resolv.conf being overwritten

I am trying to add 127.0.0.1 to my resolv.conf. I added it through the system-config-network but if I reboot, its gone. I do not have the caching nameserver package installed. My ISP's nameservers are there. It must have something to do with DHCP. Also, in the network config GUI, should I select the IPv6 option for either or both network cards? TIA

Unable to download the kickstart file ?

Hi,all: Today I tried installating few machines with kickstart file through NFS. But somehow it didn't worked and got error message "Unable to download the kickstart file". I have tested the nfs share mounting from other server and it worked fine. But somehow while trying to install <http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/#>a fresh machine with ks file through NFS is giving this error message. Hi; I have an email form that worked fine until now. For some reason, if I send an email to an email address at a domain that I control, I can receive the email TTW no problem. However, if I try and push it to, for example, this gmail account, I never get it. It's not even in the spam filter. What could this be? TIA, Susan

Hi all, I changed a bad disk (automaticly disabled from software raid1 and system for I/O error) in one of our servers and now have problem with adding new one to system without reboot. Does anybody have an experience with this? Or is it possible? :) We're using hotswap AXX6DRV3G for 6 SATA disks from Intel connected directly to MB (S5520HC from Intel too). There is AHCI as driver (enabled in bios), no HW raid. I found, something like that echo "0 0 0" >/sys/class/scsi_host/host<n>/scan but it found only sda disk which is already running.. Centos 5.4 to 5.5 fails to update lvm2 (needs newer device-mapper?)

Updating from centos 5.4 to 5.5 using an update rather than a rebuild, I get the following complaint from yum:- lvm2-2.02.56-8.el5_5.1.x86_64 from setup has depsolving problems --> Missing Dependency: device-mapper >= 1.02.39-1 is needed by package lvm2-2.02.56-8.el5_5.1.x86_64 (setup) This is from a local mirror, so checking the upstream feed in case the mirroring is incomplete I see the following:- The updates directory http://mirror.centos.org/centos-5/5/updates/x86_64/RPMS/ contains no device-mapper package, just:- lvm2-2.02.56-8.el5_5.1.x86_64.rpm The install directory http://mirror.centos.org/centos-5/5/os/x86_64/CentOS/ contains contains newer copies of both device-mapper and lvm2 than was current for centos 5.4:- device-mapper-1.02.39-1.el5.x86_64.rpm lvm2-2.02.56-8.el5.x86_64.rpm What is the right solution? To copy the missing RPM into our local mirror? Maybe he should go with Centos based solution, because moving what ever services are on his box to a smooth wall instance, is going to be murder! I would still suggest fail2ban, I have hundreds of attempts against my server farm all day everyday, and the fail2ban scripts really help to stop my services being tied up denying logins or crashing, because each ip only gets three strikes, and is out, and that's across all servers. Naming of a Java Process in Linux

Hi Not a specific question on CentOS but in general about java processes running on Linux boxes. I have a couple of java processes running on my linux boxes , They basically form a component of a bigger application. My point of interest is to monitor the resource usage of the java processes running on the linux box. So currently when i have these procs running on my box they show up as "java" in the ps -A command. I dont know for sure as to which java process belongs to which component of my appliacation. Hence what i do is add up all the resource utilization values for all java processes as my monitoring application relies on process names. So what i thought was , Is there a solution in linux or the way the JVM is initiated can we have process names different for different java processes. To be more specific if i have two java processes running in my system , in order to identify them properly can i have it running as java_1 or java_2 or something in those lines. Hello everyone, Part of our website has secured access with an SSL certificate. The problem we are running into is that the certificate is for www.domainname.com, so when they go to domainname.com (without the www. in front), the users are getting a "This connection is untrusted" warning, because the url doesn't match the certificate. I found one site that said to make a change to the apache conf file, which I have done. The change that I made is adding: <VirtualHost xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:80> ServerName domainname.com Redirect permanent / http://www.domainname.com/ </VirtualHost> This works great to redirect the users to http://www.domainname.com when they go to http://domainname.com. The problem I am running into is if they go to https://domainname.com (straight to the secure site), I am not able to find a solution that will redirect them to https://www.domainname.com, so that the ssl certificate matches and they won't get the "This connection is untrusted" warning. I tried using the same thing as above, but changing the port number to 443, and the http to https on the redirect line, but that actually breaks the site, and only displays an error: Secure Connection Failed (Error code: ssl_error_rx_record_too_long) Is there something obvious that I am missing? Is there a better way to ensure that everyone will always end up with the www in the url, so the certificate always matches? Mounting LVM disk

List Readers - I have a Dell server that uses the Perc 6i controller and had 5 1Tb disks installed (1 for OS and the other 4 in a Raid0 for a large storage pool). The owner of the server wanted me to swap out the 1Tb disks for 2Tb disks - easy enough I thought, but I ran into some issues trying to clone the OS disk to the new 2Tb disk, so I just did a re-install. So basically we now have 5 2Tb disks (1 for OS and the other 4 in a Raid0) like before. I was able to copy off the data that was on the original Raid0 volume and put it back on the newly created one that is now 8Tb and that worked well enough. But since I was unable to clone the original OS disk, and proceeded to simply re-install the OS, the owner apparently wants his $HOME directory copied off (which of course resides on the 1Tb OS disk). So, being a SAS disk, I purchased an ICY Dock which allows me to mount the SAS disk in an external enclosure, and plug it in via USB (SAS -> SATA -> USB). However when I do a 'fdisk -l /dev/sdc' I receive the following: [root@gc-server2 ~]# fdisk -l /dev/sdc Disk /dev/sdc: 2199.0 GB, 2199023255552 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 267349 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Disk /dev/sdc doesn't contain a valid partition table Two things are a bit unusual here, first of all its not a 2Tb disk, and secondly why cant I read the partition table. Originally the OS was on an LVM volume and by default it was setup as /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 / ext3 defaults 1 1 My question is, is there a way to connect and mount this via USB and be able to get the $HOME directory stuff off that I failed to copy off before removing the disk? Building an install disk on a USB key, solved

Ok, there's been discussion, including, I think, on the wiki web page, that syslinux is not correct. At any rate, after enough experimentation, I have a working install on a USB key. The procedure is: Using fdisk, partition your key: one partition, VFAT (type b, and toggle the bootable flag), about 9M or 10M, and a second partition big enough to hold a DVD. That should be type 83 (Linux native). mkfs -t vfat <the DOS partition) mkfs <the Linux partition liveCD-iso-to-disk <.iso, w/ full path> /dev/<USB DOS partition> mount <USB Linux partition> /mnt cp <CentOS.iso> /mnt/ You're done. You do have to tell it "install from hard disk", and then point it to the Linux partition. I just did this and tested it (or at least as far as the "searching for existing CentOS installations). mark

Bug in freeradius 1.1.3-1.5.el5_4 rpm

I upgraded one of my servers to CentOS 5.4 today. The freeradius service (radiusd) didn't start up due to permissions errors. I tracked it to the permissions on the /etc/raddb/certs/ directory being set to 640 rather than 750, so the radius user couldn't enter the directory. In the spec file from the source rpm, line 200 should read: %attr(750,root,radiusd) %config (noreplace) /etc/raddb/certs rather than the current: %attr(640,root,radiusd) %config (noreplace) /etc/raddb/certs Note that this bug also exists in the the 1.1.3-1.4.el5 version that's part of the CentOS 5.4 release. I'm not sure if it exists upstream though, but there it is... ;) -I

GRUB Hard Disk Error

I've got two pendrives. I want to install a Debian on them. RAID1. Ok... ... After I installed it in RAID1, it works perfectly, ok! :) When I pull out one of the pendrive [good pendrive], it still boots up, hurrah :) But: ... When I pull out the other pendrive [i plug in the first one i tried] it say's: GRUB hard disk error What can I do? I already tried: grub-install /dev/sdc <-that's the pendrive name [bios -> hard drive emulation=hard drive, not auto] or: # grub find /boot/grub/stage1 hd0,0 hd1,0 root (hd0,0) setup (hd0,0) etc. What's the solution? Please help me:\ I can't just dd the first 512 Byte of the "good pendrive", because the uuid is stored there. [needed for the sraid..] It gets to the grub, so it's not a ""boot-order problem"" How can I install grub to these two pendrives, so that if one of the pendrives die, it would still be a bootable system?

When deploying a firewall, it is advisable to have (atleast for input, better for all) to have the general policy set to drop, and only allow in what you expect to be coming in. If you put a "-j log" line as a final line for each section, you'll see every packet you forgot about... You might want to run your MTA's ip address through a blacklist checker. Also, do you use srv records? Has anything here changed? I've found that when it comes to email, its quite plausible for your system to break because of an external party, for example, do you use the relay of your ISP? If you do, run their ip through a blacklist db, in case someone on their end has been spamming. Can't umount flash drive because an application has it locked

This occasionally happens to me when I've been editing an OOo document that resides on a flash drive I use with one of my laptops. I've tried poking around in ps to find out which process has the drive locked, and I can't figure it out. Nothing directly refers to the flash drive except one of the hald processes, and it's just scanning the drive (I tried killing that and it made no difference). My usual sequence of events is as follows: 1. Plug in the flash drive. 2. Wait for it to appear on the desktop. 3. Start up a terminal window (which recognizes the flash drive and runs sudo to allow execute permissions on the drive). 4. Run the script that unzips the files I want. 5. Open the file with the OO writer, edit it for a while, then save and close it. 6. Update the zip archive (on the flash drive). 7. Close the terminal window. 8. Umount the drive, which fails. I've tried waiting for as much as five minutes, running sync - nothing. The last three times this happened, I had to shut down the laptop (which I was going to do anyway) in order to free the flash drive. This takes several minutes, which can be precious when I need to bag the laptop in a hurry. There's nothing in any of the syslogs. The laptop was just updates to the L&G CentOS 5.5. What am I missing? Thanks. mhr

Grub Error 22; no Windows

Hello, I have a GridEngine setup with 5 subnodes and two RAIDS attached. I backed up the OS drive - 120GB - to an external hard drive - 500GB - using ddrescue. The OS drive is partitioned as: sda1 has the OS and is about 7 GB sda2 has /var and is about 4 GB sda3 has swap and is about 1 GB After backing up, there were 4KB of errors, but all at the end of the disk around 118GB. This used to be a partition back in the day, but I deleted it accidentally. I want to back up to this new larger disk b/c the original 120GB disk is discontinued. I boot from a live cd - SystemRescue CD - and run e2fsck -c -c -C 0 y on sda1 and sda2 on the backup drive, and it seems to finish fine. Then I replaced the OS drive with the backup drive, and it goes to boot, then Grub Loading Stage 1.5; Error 22. I tried setting the error-check values to 0 for /1 and /var, but it is still trying to error check it. My blkid says that sda1, sda2, and sda3 all have different UUIDs. sdc1, sdd1, and md0 all have the same UUID. md0 is a RAID1 comprised of sdc1 and sdd1. sdc and sdd are identical drives. This used to happen, and I would just restart a couple of times, and it would sneak on past the error eventually, but to no avail this time. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you so much! And thank you to the dozen people who offered advice on the best backup option. After reading all of the replies and the links, I think I will prob go with the rsync-backup suggestion. Mahalo, Jeff

5.5 ISO size vs RHEL

Hi We use CentOS and RHEL, the 5.5 RHEL ISO for x86_64 is 3.7GB (**), the CentOS one is 4602MB (***) split over two DVDs. Is this reasonable and correct? Any ideas why would there be such a discrepancy if they are built from the same (or very similar) source? And it still got trash. My user's sure he had not turned it off, that he just came in one morning and it had lost it, and I have every reason to believe him (he *does* know what he's doing). So, at this point, we've given up - his machine wasn't on a UPS, and given the power in this building, there's a high probability of a surge, and something on the card got fried - so he's got another machine, and we're probably going to call this one dead. Hi, I have updated 8 machines so far and 2 are refusing to boot on 2.6.18-194.3.1.el5 kernel, they just hang at: 'Starting udev:' but when I revert to 2.6.18-164.15.1.el5 kernel they boot fine. Any pointers? Cheers, Colin.

Networking setup/help

I had to install 5.5 from scratch and now I have to rebuild my home networking system. I haven't had to mess with this stuff in over 5+ years and I'm sure there may be better ways of doing it now. My liunx box acts as firewall/gateway for 2 other pcs. I was using a script from the Linux IP Masquerade HOWTO with ddclient (since I have a dynamic ip). Also, I don't think I need a full name server. Can I get by with a caching nameserver? Thanks!! Eddie

A Directory/Subdirectories Disappeared - which log file to look for this kind of information?

Hi, A directory/subdirectories just disappeared on our dev box, and we don't know what happened. Is there a log file that logs this kind of stuff (such as who/date did a 'rmdir'). The /var/log directory has a lot of files and I'm not sure where to start. Thanks in advance. Mary

Generic RAID question

Does anyone know if using unequal drives in a RAID 0 is possible? I was looking to set up a software stripe but if I have two volumes of unequal size I wish to stripe over, will the OS try and work around this by say only using as much space as is available on the smallest drive or is there anyway it will use all of both drives? Let me start by saying that no, I can't get a new card for my user. So, I've got the 96 nvidia driver. I've rebuilt it several times before, and Nvidia's installer's always worked fine. Actually, I have the 73 on my system, and just updated to 5.5, and no problem. HOWEVER, I last rebuilt my user's driver back in mid-April, after the last kernel update (was that mid-March?), and everything was fine... until the other day, when he walked in to tell me he'd had to reboot, and it wasn't working, and dropped him to command line. I rebuilt it... and it dies. As in, sometimes, I have to go to another machine and ssh in to reboot, and sometimes, I have to power cycle his system. I get garbage with the nvidia driver; with nv, I can at least get one of his two monitors working. When I try x with the nvidia driver, it just keeps printing out initializing GART, I think it is (I've lost the log), and then that it has failed to allocate ROP. Anyone see anything like this? CentOS 5.5 - VMware Fencing in Cluster

I'm trying to use the newly integrated fence_vmware script within luci. I add it as a shared device and assume it is setup right (it is added as a device but it doesn't seem to do any connection test). When I try and add my shared fencing device as the primary device to a node it says it is updating the node configuration but then doesn't actually add the fence in the node's configuration within luci. If I try and fence the device it predictably fails to fence the device. I tried using fence_vmware from the command line (which seem to have some trivial errors which keep it from even running) and it works fine (after I fixed fence_vmware). Can anyone offer me advice on setting up the shared fence and applying it to nodes for VMware Fencing?

Just installed from scratch 5.5 Weird, eth0 is now eth1 and eth1 is eth0. Don't even know how I'm sending this message as the the CentOS machine can't connect to the internet and this windoze box uses the Centos box as a gateway.

problem with bridged network for a kvm guest

I'm having trouble with the bridged network setup. I'm new to kvm, but I got a window xp sp2 guest set up without trouble a few days ago. I followed the instructions in the RH virtualization guide, and all was fine until I had to reboot the host machine a few days later. Then, I lost networking altogether on the host machine. I lost track of all the things I tried, but finally got networking back on the host, but I suspect it's not right. For one thing, I deleted ifcfg-br0. Also, I commented out bridge=br0 in ifcfg-eth0. Oddly, ifconfig shows both interfaces, and shows them both set to static ip. One of the points I'm confused about is what, if anything, to write for the ip address in ifcfg-eth0. When I first set it up, I set the bridge interface to dhcp, and kept the host as a static ip on my lan. That made made the host dhcp, but that's no good for me, so I set the ip in ifcfg-br0 to my static ip, and everything worked fine, even though it didn't make sense that both eth0 and br0 had the same ip. Thanks for any guidance.

Don't do NFS localhost mounts from fstab eg localhost:/origdir /newdir nfs ro 0 0 (Indeed, don't do localhost NFS mounts at all). Why? Because at shutdown time nfsd is terminated before the unmounting, so the shutdown hangs trying to access NFS server localhost. And at boot time it tries to do NFS mounts before nfsd starts up. _sigh_ -- rgds Stephen

My desktop updated without a hitch... well, actually, I ran out of disk space after the download completed, so had to clear some space, but the update process continued from where I left off without a hitch -- and that's hardly CentOS's fault. I've still got to update my laptop, but am a little leery, because I think I've a got a hard drive failing. At any rate, thank you *again* for all your hard work. Hi all, I have a need to copy only dirs, subdirs and sym links only without the need to copy contents. I originally used the following test to observe behavior; rsync -a -f"+ */" -f"- *" source destination So I noticed that dirs/subdirs were copied but without contents as desired. I have several sym links (dir sym links) that I would also to to copy over. I tried this; rsync -a -f"+ */" -f"- * -l" source destination Although my sym links show, they are broken. Any thoughts on how to copy dirs, subdirs and sym links only w/o contents?

Apparent BIND problem doing RBL lookups for Postfix

My apologies if I'm posting the wrong place, or am asking a common question. All my looking so far hasn't turned up anything very useful in knowing what to look at, or what to modify. --- CentOS 5, running BIND 9.3.6 i386 Hardware: P4, 2.8Ghz, 1G memory Sata drives - non mirrored etc. Load is light, usually under 0.1 -- This box is running Postfix as our mail server. BIND (9.3.6) [Latest.] -- Problem: Postfix is doing RBL lookups on zen.spamhaus.org. Everything goes along groovy - but then lookups start failing. Name service error for name=33.229.242.205.zen.spamhaus.org type=A: Host not found, try again --- As you can see, we had a lookup succeed and then just right after, one fail - claiming it got no answer from BIND. I get others after this that SUCCEED - so it's not in 100% failure mode yet. After time [how much, I don't know] eventually all the zen queries [or most all] fail. A bind restart fixes the problem. [Hmmm...] --- I do some logging in bind, and I don't see any reason for them to fail. destroy --- As far as I can see, the BIND query simply didn't get a response - but no errors? --- First, someone's going to ask - perhaps Zen's blocking you. I don't think so. Here's why. -We're non-commercial, using the definition set my spamhaus, -mail connects TOTAL are well less than 100K a day. (Less than 10K in actuality) -and thus having more than 300K queries is pretty unlikely. -Also, let me remind you that a restart of the bind service seems to make the failures go away for a while, so if zen were blocking our queries, I'd think that wouldn't make a difference. --- I certainly suspect a problem with BIND, but I can't find it, and have no idea where to go from here. I simply don't know where to look any more. If BIND were having a problem, say allocating memory, or something, shouldn't it be in a debug level 5 log? Hi, I need to upgrade a system running 4.1 to 4.2, but before I do I want to list out all the packages that will be updated/installed/removed. I can run up2date -l to get a list of updates but does that show packages that need to be installed and removed as well or just the updates? Second, how would I go about upgrading 4.1 to 4.2 instead of 4.8 (i.e. latest update). Unfortunately I don't have access to centos 4.x at the moment.and googling just centos 4.1 to 4.2 is not bringing up relevant information. Thanks Sheraz

hi guys, is there an estimate when centos 5.5 will be released? I'm sitting on needles here, because since I moved my 4*1.5TB raid5 from an asus to an intel D510 mainboard I encounter bug the described here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=512552 short version: running xfs on top of a raid5 under heavy load causes corrupted data to be read and the filesystem shutting down occasionally. version 5.5 should solve this problem. if 5.5 is just a few days away I'll keep waiting, but if it takes much longer I'll need to work around this problem like going back to the old mainboard, compiling the kernel myself, switching to ext3 - none of which I'm eager to do. cu

Dear all, Could anybody give me some recommended open source software for wifi management? What I am looking for is a simple and basic tools, for example the software will have these kind of features : - user connect to the wifi network - user got IP from DHCP but he can't browse to anywhere at first. Instead he will redirected to a "login page" - administrator will set the username and password (e.g : user1, password ; user2, password2) - if needed, the username will be enabled and be given to the user - if unused, the username will simply be disabled so no authenticated user could connect eventhough they remember the password. - I don't need the billing system just the administration tools. I already googled and found chillispot, but it seemed to be an overkill software. Are there anything simpler than chillispot? Thanks. Roberto

Hello, I believe that it is well known that the scroll wheel on the Microsoft Bluetooth Mouse 5000 does not work on CentOS 5.4. It does, however, work as expected on Fedora 12 & Ubuntu 9.10 & 10.04. Yum segmentation fault when updating to CentOS v5.5

Hi all, I'm getting a segmentation fault with yum when I try to update a CentOS v5.4 install to v5.5. What I've done: * Ran yum clean all. * Ran yum update yum* * Ran yum update, and got the segmentation fault. * Yum suggested running with option --skip-broken, which I did. Still got the segmentation fault. * Rebooted machine and ran yum update again. Segmentation fault... * Googled some and found some hints on rebuilding the rpm-database, which I did. * Ran yum update again. Got segmentation fault again. * Disabled all 3rd party repos, rpmforge and epel, tried yum update again and got seg fault. * Disabled all plugins; priorities, fastestmirror and kmod, tried yum pdate again and got seg fault yet again. * Removed /var/cache/yum and ran yum update. Got a seg fault. Any other tips, tricks or hints I could try? FWIW, this is the only machine I've had this problem with. All others I've updated to v5.5 so far have worked w/o a hitch as upgrades go. We would like to tune and optimize our setup by removing unneeded packages -- kernel modules to be specific. I was wondering, how does one measure the speed of the kernel. Is that even possible?

a couple hours after the update (and requisite reboot and reinstallation of nvidia proprietary driver), I noticed I wasn't gettting any email. upon a little investigation, I noted that the update had replaced my custom sendmail.cf with its own. I don't recall updates to sendmail doing that previously,.... also, around that time my panels stopped unhiding, so they remained in a hidden state that I could not recover them from. logged off and on and it didn't help, in fact it was worse: no panels at all. so I did a reboot and now they seem to be working. I'll have to keep an eagle-eye on them. so far, all else seems well. Not firewall, but what?

I have a strange problem, where some clients see the website on my server and some do not. It is not about the iptables, and seems to be not about tcp wrapper. Still it is something within the box. More details: - the problem is only with some clients, with no geographical connection between them; other clients see the website just fine - the problem-clients get timeout with their browser - they get timeout also when they try a numerical ip address - but they see another machine in the same subnet just fine (when they browse by ip number), so the problem has to be inside this webserver box, right? - port 80 (not ssl) Switching off iptables does not help. The files hosts.allow and hosts.deny are empty, so I guess it's not the tcp wrapper. I am out of things to test. Problem with gs

Just updated a laptop.. everything went smoothly but noticed one issue. After updating and rebooting, I did a print test using enscript to print a test file. In a few seconds, the CPU utilization shot way up. The ghostprint gs program was using 99% CPU. The laptop fans started spinning at the high rate. Laptop got very hot very suddenly then shutdown. On reboot, the BIOS reported a temperature error and that the system was shutdown to prevent damage. On rebooting, the gs program kicked off again and again CPU shot up very high. Fans started kicking off. I killed the gs process and about 20 seconds later then fans went back to normal.

sendmail many emails

I was getting MANY emails from XXX.hinet.net - kind of filled my mqueue directory. I stopped sendmail. removed all the files in mqueue, added to sendmail access a REJECT for hinet.net This certainly seems to help - but is that the correct way to take care of this sort of thing? Thanks, Jerry

Hello All, I don't have any reason to believe CENTOS (5.4) is underlying my difficulties but it's what I've got to work with so here's the setup: I have a 2P motherboard with 2 Opteron 2376s and two ethernet ports. The setup is fully virtualized, with Dom0, dom4 and Dom1 up and running. dom4 is attached to a dhcp service on eth0 and has no problems. I've recently connected dom1 to eth1. eth1 is connected to a dsl modem (no router) and to the ISP's dsl signal It has a static IP address, 204.174.35.205. At intervals of a few hours the dom1 service on eth1 became inaccessible, not responding for either web or ssh access. eth0 on another provider's network remains up at this time. I can fix the availability issue by ssh'ing to the eth0 side, then ssh from there to dom1 (at 192.168.0.117) and then from the inside out ping any external address, it doesn't seem to matter which one. Then the connections get through and all is well for a while. I have a workaround in place with this command: watch -n 60 ping -c 1 uniserve.com That's been running for two days and access from outside has been uninterrupted. I don't know where to start on this one. It could be a funny router setup at the ISp's end or maybe the port (previously disused) on this board is really flaky (but then why does pinging help?). automount complaints

Folks, I've been getting complaints in our logfiles, such as May 12 10:07:07 <servername> automount[3415]: update_negative_cache: key ".git" not found in map. a) Is there a FAQ on automount that might cover some of this? Googling hasn't found one for me? b) Any clues as to what might be causing this? I see a lot of it, in spurts. mark

hai i have run the halt command from the xshell and the machine got restarted, now when i restart the machine, i am getting this error . Hi, I'm not sure what's going on ;-( updated a .vimrc file in my home directory with some customized settings last week. I'm looking at my home directory now, that .vimrc file disappeared for no reason and I saw a file called vimrc and .viminfo in the home directory. Of course, it didn't take my customized settings when I used vim. Is that a normal behavior? Am I missing something here? Thanks Mary
