Can no longer print

My server has CentOS 5.4. I had hplip-2.7.12 installed and running, as earlier versions didn't work with my printers, and was able to print to a networked printer. As far as I'm aware, that's the version that was still running last time I printed. Recently I decided to add a local USB printer, and at that point discovered that I can no longer print. I've no idea how long this has been so. Rightly or wrongly, I decided that something must have seriously upset hplip, so I removed it and re-installed it. Unfortunately it hasn't cured anything. I have the correct ppd files for both printers, and CUPS lists them. If I step through the CUPS Modify Printer pages everything looks correct, but when I try to send a test page I see "usr/lib/cups/filter/foomatic-rip failed". Running 'hp-check -t' tells me that libcrypto is a required dependency and I don't have it. 'rpm --redhatprovides libcrypto' says that no package provides it, and no package of that name is listed. Where can I get it? Similarly, ppdev and ReportLab are essential but missing. I have printed from this server in the past, but I can't get it sorted this time. I can't even find any uninstall file for hplip, and it doesn't appear in the rpm database. Is there any way I can get this working again? Thanks Anne

Information: 5.4 kernel (2.6.18-164.el5). I have a vmcore (from kdump), if the developers are interested, let me know a place to upload the vmcore file. I used the crash command to do a backtrace. I manage to get machines with later 5.4 and 5.5 to panic the same way. Broadcom or Intel NICs panic the same way. This is an NFS client where the NFS server is restarting several times; NFSv3, mount it with defaults,noatime. The client was busy writing things on NFS-mounted space while the NFS servers was restarting several times. So far, if I mount it with udp option, I've not managed to panic the machines. The bad news is that NFSv4 is strictly TCP, if I were to go down that route. >From the backtrace, it seems the crash is TCP-related. I'll be trying couple Linux TCP settings changes. It's a possibility that the issues are with TCP in general (not NFS). scripting CPAN installs

Hey folks, Maybe there is a Perl/CPAN list that is a better place to ask this? If so, maybe someone can point me to it. Anyway, I want to be able to script the installation of a bunch of CPAN modules, and the first basic problem I am coming up against is that the "cpan" command seems to always return 0 regardless of whether or not the install completed. Google does not bring up a whole lot of help for me here, but I have to think this problem has already been solved. CentOS, RHEL, all versions. Suppose I am upgrading a package foo-1.0 to foo-2.0 (assume foo is not relocatable), and both packages have %preun sections in their .spec files. It appears that foo-1.0's %preun is run after foo-2.0 has been installed. So what happens if foo-1.0 needs to run a binary that was provided as part of foo-1.0 during its %preun stage, and a binary of the same name is provided with foo-2.0? The installed binary is now foo-2.0's, right? So how to run foo-1.0's binaries during its %preun stage? Is the old binary available under a different name before it gets erased? -steve

They also have the EPEL and rpmfusion repos enabled as well as the centos plus repo. They however have openoffice version 2.3.0 I *thought* that CentOS was basically the equivelant of RHEL. did we do something wrong? or is RHEL (at least in the case of openoffice) shipping a newer release than CentOS? setting up 3 network cards

I am attempting to put 3 network cards in one box, running centos 64 5.4 network cards are forcedeth (motherboard), e1000e and r8169. I have ifcfg-eth0, ifcfg-eth1 and ifcfg-eth2 all configured up. All looks fine. eth0 is my internal network (forcedeth) eth1 is Cable modem eth2 is T1 data Once I connect the three networks and try to ping something all I can ping is internal network machines. Cant ping anything on eth1 or eth2. the route -n looks fine. the correct IP listest on left points to the correct ethX on the right. the default route is using eth2 at the moment. Is there something "special" about setting up 3 network cards that may help? What should I look into? Thanks, Jerry

Mounting a WinXP share requires a new instantiation of the old command smbmount \\\\hostname\\path\\to\\share /local/mount/point -o ip=123.12.34.234,username=hostname\\my_userid,password=whatever which should now be mount -t cifs <somebody please fill in the blanks here> Does the windows side have to change? This is more a CentOS issue, I think (hope) than selinux. I've got some systems in permissive mode - good thing, or they'd be dead. they keep spewing execmem errors with java, among other things. This *seems* like something that should be covered. I looked at the policy (selinux-policy-targeted, and it's 2.4.6. Googling around for the error, trying to find what's hopefully a boolean, or a role/etc solution, I saw an FC package with a 3.somethingorother release. Now, I don't know if that related to fedora, or if that relates to an selinux release. Does anyone know? Are we, with CentOS, that far behind with something like this, which isn't even a port, but a policy? mark, tired of crap in my logs

Xen-server in virt-manager Paravirtualized doesn't work

Hi all, I'm setting up a virtualization software on CentOS, using virt-manager, KVM, qemu and Xen When I want to create a VM, paravirtualized mode isn't possible (ie it is grey) What should I do to use xen paravirtualized mode ? i figured that xen is not running but /etc/init.d/xend start doesn't work xen and xen-kernel are installed on the machine (rpm -qa | grep xen replies : xen & xen-kernel) thanks for all help -- Cordialement, / Greetings, Georghy FUSCO

Using Wireshark on CentOS without UI

Hi All Yesterday i had installed wireshark on my centos box which does not have the GUI , It is actually a hardened box. I installed the tool using the following command: yum install wireshark After installation i dont know how to proceed further in capturing the packets. I basically want to capture packets and copy them onto my windows box. On the windows box i can use the Wireshark UI to open the pcap file to view its contents. Can some one help me in this regard. Well, I have had to tweak this it a little, bit it finally worked fine. Initlally, the arial.ttf could not be found, so that I had to force the use of courier regular I'm using the standard default Treeflower theme. Hi , all ; My openldap is running fine . Sendmail configuration is done. I want to use LDAP authentication only. User of my mailserver should not have a Linux users . I am running CentOS 5.3 i386 . Openldap-2.3.43-3.el5 , sendmail-8.13.8-2.el5 All the software is already installed and running . LDAP has the following tree: uid=xxx, ou=People, dc=test, dc=com I want to know what I've to change which configuration file and any pointer to the doc with clearly says the configuration . Any help will be appreciated. Please I am kind of stuck and waiting for anyone who can clear this cloud. Thank you in advance ~

warnquota email domain ?

Dear All, Sorry if this is the wrong place for this question, or if I'm just being daft, but I can't get warnquota to send emails to the right address. When I put a test user (gollum) over quota, and run warnquota on a server (nfs2.lmb.internal), the email generated by warnquota appears in the maillog as "to=<gollum(a)nfs2.lmb.internal>," What I need is the email to go to "gollum(a)lmb.internal" I have four NFS servers, using NIS / automounts (no LDAP), my users all have email addresses <USERID(a)lmb.internal>. Any ideas on how to get warnquota to work, or should I just write a script to parse `repquota -avgu` ? many thanks Jake -- Jake Grimmett

X Servers xorg.conf file changing.

Twice now over the past year, I've had something edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file without user intervention. The machine in question is a 3 headed X-Terminal that displays the accelerator control system application for a medical proton accelerator, and operated by staff who do NOT have root or root like access (sudo) on the X-Term, as once it's configured, it should never need changing. It lives on a private network (Network? Actually a crossover cable to the Sun box in a protected environment) with no reachable route even from within the organization. Out of the blue, on 2 occasions now, an entry for 1 of the video cards (out of 3) has changed it's driver entry from "nvidia" to "nv". This, of course, prevents X from starting. This morning, while of the phone with the field service tech, I corrected the entry, set the xorg.conf file to 444, and when they rebooted the X-Term, it again changed the entry from "nvidia" to "nv". Again, I corrected the xorg.conf file, reset it to 444, and rebooted the X-Term again, and it started fine, no changes. This box does get rebooted quite frequently, yet the unexpected change has only happened 3 time total, once 6 months and probably 30+ reboots ago, and again twice this morning on back to back reboots. (Yet the third and forth reboots did NOT change the file) I've never seen this happen before, and am at a bit of a loss wondering where to look. CentOS 5.3, 2.6.18-128.1.6.el5 #1 The X-Term is diskless, boots via PXE from a Solaris 10 box. Diskless boot configured using stock Cent tools (system-config-diskless and friends) Any suggestion where to look would be appreciated. Hi CentOS folks! A few days ago, I announced this to the Linux-Clustering mailing list. I think it might be of interest to some on this list, too, as most people who use CentOS are more "roll your own" types. This project was actually developed and tested on CentOS 5.4 x86_64. :) --------------------------------------------------------------------- I wanted to announce a new open hardware, open source cluster fence device: Node Assassin - http://nodeassassin.org After four months and a lot of help from friends at http://hacklab.to, the first version is done and ready for the lime light! (warts and all) It fully implements the FenceAgentAPI, including independent sensing of a Node's on/off status. There is a simple installer and uninstaller that has been tested on CentOS 5.x and should work on any system supporting Red Hat style clustering. It is built as a shield for the Arduino development platform and uses entirely "off the shelf" parts that can be ordered online or bought at most electronic parts shops. The software and build instructions are fully documented. The goal of this project is to let people build very inexpensive clusters on commodity hardware. The current version supports four nodes. If you want more nodes, simply build a second Node Assassin! The fence agent supports multiple simultaneous Node Assassins. It would also work wonderfully as a secondary fence device. This is my first "official" open source project, so I would love to hear some feedback even if you don't plan to use it yourself. :) If you don't want to build your own, I am working with an embedded systems engineer in the hope of having pre-built units available in the next few months. They will support 8 to 64 nodes each depending on the model. If you think you would be interested in this, please let me know. Strange new boot problem with CentOS 4 machine

I have a custom-built PC on which I've been running CentOS 4.x (kept up to the latest x) for a few years without any problems ... until this week. Last week I was out of town on an extended trip, so I shut the machine down and powered off my UPS, etc. When I returned on Saturday, I turned everything back on, and the machine seemed to be booting normally ... and then it just very abruptly turned itself off, and refused to power back on. A short while later I was able to restart it, but again it shut down during boot. I *think* all that matters is that I've waited "long enough," but I was also moving the case around to open it so there's a slight possibility that something is loose and being jostled back into connecting (but I really don't think so). After watching the boot messages carefully and comparing to rc.sysinit on a different CentOS 4 box, I've concluded that it's shutting down during loading of the "other" modules (after storage, network, and audio) parsed from the output of kmodule. Unfortunately rc.sysinit doesn't echo anything about what these modules might be. The only thing that's changed is that I swapped in a new USB mouse because the buttons on the old one were getting glitchy, but I tried leaving that unplugged and the boot still stops at the same place with the same symptoms. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Suggestions on what to do to either get past this or diagnose it further?

CentOS 5 - locking out users afer 3 failed attempts

Hi I am trying to lock users after 3 attempts and then set the timeout before they can log in again. I thought i could achieve this with auth required pam_tally.so deny=3 unlock_time=600 in /etc/pam.d/system-auth but it seems to not be the case - I cant find a working config for this anywhere and i wonder if anyone has one they can share? thanks

Debugging slow apache server?

Hello. Package Manager reports (with a green checkmark) that I have java-1.6.0 installed on my machine (running Cent 5.3), but it seems to not be running. I used http://java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml and got "Something is wrong. Java is not working." Perhaps I'm confused on which program I need to use java-coded apps. PM lists this app as "OpenJDK Runtime Environment" - is this it? CentOS5 and samba

We're trying to migrate RHEL3 and CentOS4 based samba servers over to CentOS5, but it's a bleeding disaster. We cannot get it to work reliably with any version of CentOS5, i386 or x86_64, the included 3.0.x version of samba or 3.4.x/3.5.x compiled from source. The symptoms are: read access is extremely slow, write access seems to work in principle (e.g. creating a zeros-sized file on a share), but writing even small files (100k) to the share eventually times out with "out of memory or disk space" errors. These shares are home directories NFS-mounted on the samba server. Shares of local disks work fine as expected. We have played with oplock settings and got some improvements, but not reliably, and this seems to effect XP and Seven clients differently. Surely we are not the first to run into this sort of issue? Problem with first login

Hi , guys: I have a problem on the openldap Manager account login : The server is running CentOS 5.3 i386 and I have phpldapadmin-1.0.1-1.el5.noarch.rpm installed . It's running apache 2.2.3 with php 5.1.6 and openldap 2.3.34. I believe I have slapd setup correctly but I'm not completely sure. My /etc/openldap/slapd.conf file has... access to * by self write by * read by anonymous auth database bdb suffix "dc=my-domain,dc=com" rootdn "cn=Manager,dc=my-domain,dc=com" rootpw {SSHA}xxxxx My /etc/ldap.conf has the following lines (among others)... host 127.0.0.1 base dc=my-domain,dc=com If I do the following command... ldapsearch -x -D "cn=Manager,dc=my-domain,dc=com" -W from the command line it asks for a password. If I type the password I created with slapppassd and have as rootpw in slapd.conf it carries on and returns the following (with comments removed)... search: 2 result: 32 No such object So it appears that from the command line authentication with ldap is working. In my phpldapadmin config.php file i've modified the following lines... $ldapservers->SetValue($i,'server','host','127.0.0.1'); $ldapservers->SetValue($i,'server','port','389'); $ldapservers->SetValue($i,'server','auth_type','session'); When I go to phpldapadmin and do "Anonymous Bind" it connects and allows me to view the ldap tree. If I try and login with user "Manager" and the password I use on the command line, it doesn't work giving me... "Bad username or password. Please try again." I've also tried putting the following line to my config.php file but to no avail... $ldapservers->SetValue($i,'server','base',array('my-domain', 'com')); Am I using the correct username? Are there any commands I can do to further check my ldap server is setup correctly? Are there any log files I can look at? Thanks for all your help.

(semi-) rugged laptop running CentOS 5?

We're looking for a laptop to run in a 10,000', cold, occasionally wet environment, and it needs to run CentOS 5. Perhaps something like the Dell Latitude E6400 ATG? There's a reference to a minor trackball bug for the 6400 under CentOS 5 (http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=4192) but otherwise it sounds like the x86_64 version should run on it. Ideally the system would use a SSD too. Any suggestions?

removing inaffective SAN partitions from the system .....

Dear All, I have installed CentOS release 5.2 (Final). EMC SAN partition is mounted by using EMC Powerpath for resolving multiple paths. I was able write and read data over to SAN partition without any issues. Subsequently I have unmounted EMC SAN partition from the system and deleted LUN using Navisphere user interface. After rebooting system, I still see SAN mappings in system. CentOS installation on x86 platform

Dear All I had two x86 platform that I needed to install CentOS 5 on them. On one of them that had Windows OS pre-installed, I installed VBox and then I installed CentOS inside its VBox. On the second platform, I tried for a fresh installation of CentOS as its primary OS (I mean inserting the CentOS installation CD and rebooting the machine and following the instructions to install the CentOS). On the second platform, I want to install Windows OS again and as I don't find proper VM machine for my CentOS so I tried to put the Windows installation CD and reboot the machine but it was unsuccessful. Actually it didn't read the Windows installtion CD and just boots up from its CentOS . As I chose to 'remove all partitions on this machine' when installing the CentOS so I think I need to change its FAT to be able to re-install Windows OS. Can you please comment me back what was wrong on my second machine that I cannot re-install Windows OS on it? Thank you

Hi, One of our local town halls has asked me to implement a wiki-based website dedicated to ecological farming. The wiki is supposed to host a variety of documents in text, video and audio format. I've never used any wiki engines myself. Is there any one you can recommend in particular ? I'm using CentOS 5 on the server, so I would be glad to use a solution where I don't have to jump through burning loops (e. g. install a more recent version of PHP/Python/whatever) to make it work. ext3/ext4 random write performance on ioDrive duo

Hi all, I have evaluated Fusion-io ioDrive duo (PCIe direct attached NAND flash memory storage) on the CentOS 5.4. The experimental result shows the write performance with multiple jobs (processes) on the ext3/ext4 filesystems is lower than that of XFS. The question I have is what is the cause of the ext3/ext4 performance limitation. I have measured the random write performance on several filesystems using fio benchmark (http://freshmeat.net/projects/fio/) My PC box has dual Intel Xeon W5590 3.33 GHz (8 cores), 48 GB memory, and Fusion-io ioDriveDuo (320 GB SLC). The XFS performance grows as the number of jobs increases. On the other hands, the ext3/ext4 do not. In the both cases, I mount filesystems with the "noatime" option only. Volume keys don't work

A side effect that I just noticed is that the volume up/down controls keys no longer seem to function at all. I reset the keyboard shortcuts to use them, but even with the whole volume control panel enabled, they don't do a thing. What did I break? I don't remember seeing this one before.... mhr

crypt question/server hotel

I want to put my server in a "server hotel". But: I don't trust my "server hotel owner". What can I do? I can crypt my partition/hdd's that contains the data. Ok. But: then my operating system will not be encrypted. Not Ok. If I crypt my operating system too, then when a reboot comes, I have to type a password to decrypt. But my server will be at a "server hotel" I can't directly use a keyboard [no service cpu]. What can I do [on technical side] to ensure a little more security to my server [e.g: crypt my partition/slice/whatever, that has the operating system, but without the "type password" ""problem""] Thank you for any tips/help.

Keyboard problem

I've had a Logitech cordless desktop on my primary desktop for the last few years, and every once in a while the number pad would just "go out" - the <enter> key and num-lock would still work, but of all the others would do nothing except the 5, which would pop-up a subwindow in some app on the screen that didn't have the focus. I thought this was aproblem with the keyboard, so I just switched to a wired keyboard, and voila - the number key pad misbehaves exactly the same way. Is this a Linx / RHEL / CentOS bug? Has anyone else seen this? I'm going to reboot to see what happens, but I'd be really, really disappointed if it all just comes back to life (meaning that it *is* a problem in the system and not the hardware).... Let us know if you can, and I'll report after I reboot. Thanks. mhr

Logserver recommendations

Hi I am using rsyslog to get logs to a central box and they are stored in the format of /<hostname>/<year>/<month>/<day>/<logfilename> I need a solution that can trawl through these directories and pick up exceptions like failed logons and sudo usage that sort of thing. Has anyone got any clues as to what might help to achieve this, i am looking into logsurfer but not sure if this handles the directory structure nicely. thanks for any tips

Samba and ldap failover - RH / Centos problem?

Hi folks, I recently got my ldap master slave samba test environment up and runing. samba-3.0.33-3.15.el5_4.1 openldap-2.3.43-3.el5 The ldap systems sync fine, samba users are authenticated by each server seperatly if I set tham in the samba conf. E.g. passdb backend = ldapsam:"ldap://ldap2.filmakademie.de" and passdb backend = ldapsam:"ldap://ldap1.filmakademie.de" work. passdb backend = ldapsam:"ldap://ldap1.filmakademie.de ldap://ldap2.filmakademie.de" works as long, as ldap1 is up. If ldap1 is down, no authentication / switchover to ldap2 is done. I've googled, looked up the samba wiki and finaly I found a posting Fedora 4 related to probems with an ldap_initialize() function ... So my question, are ther any known problems or what may I check/debug? Building an "instant on" X terminal

I got my hands on a HP t5720. This was designed as a thin-client workstation (originally Windows XPembedded, talking to a Windows terminal server). It's not very powerful, with an AMD Geode NX 1500 (1.0 GHz), 256Mb RAM (16MB used for video) and a 512Mb flash "hard disk". I plugged in a USB DVD drive and was able to boot "linux rescue" from a C5.4 32bit disk, and it basically looks like pretty generic PC hardware. So I thought this would be a great device to build as an "instant on" type device. Well, as close to instant-on as possible :-) This probably means a standard C5 build is not suitable (too many processes running; would take a while to start up). So an "X terminal", maybe. I look at the LTSP code base, but this looks like it wants to run as it's own OS; I already have a C5 server in my house, I don't want to build another one (not even as a virtual image). Acting as an X terminal, I'd guess the 256Mb RAM should be sufficient; it won't be processing much beyond the display locally (although I might want to enable ssh and add a locally connected printer). The root disk could be local (512Mb flash) or by NFS. What do people recommend for building this? What would have the quickest power-on-to-ready time? -- rgds Stephen

Hi All, Not sure exactly a memory leak or not. I was porting my nagios from Redhat 7.3 to CentOS 5.4 and I observed the memory usage was gradually increasing on the new centos box. When I ran all my perl plugins with Valgrind -3.2.1, all the plugins complained about a memory leak. Not sure if it's a leak or if its fault with valgrind way of evaluating things. I have attached valgrind output when i ran a simple hello-world.pl on my centos box. I shall greatly appreciate if anyone have faced similar behaviour. Thanks, Jai Prakash

All, I've got a machine running CentOS 5.3 and this machine has got 2 - built-in 1 Gig NICs and a expansion card with 4 - 100 Meg NICs. For whatever reason at install time, it made the expansion card eth0 through eth3 and the internal ports eth4 and eth5. And by default the 'machine' is known on the network by the eth0 NIC, so my throughput is limited to 100 Mb. How can I force the internal NICs to be eth0 and eth1? Thanks, Gene Poole

Now eth0 needs a default gateway which is your routers address maybe like 192.168.2.1. Now eth0 needs a primary and secondary DNS entry. If the isp only has one then use one else you can use the default gateway address of the router but not recomended because you are having problems so I think you need the real dns. If you log into the router you will see or find the dns entries you need and the dhcp block that is assigned. John

Power consumption monitoring

Hi, I have quite a few low-end development/test servers running continuously and I would like to better manage their power consumption. I have found interesting information on how to perform CPU scaling (e.g. [1] or [2]). But I cannot find if there is a way to (software) monitor power consumption on CentOS (or other such data like CPU temperature, fan speed etc.). What I read so far is that support is quite limited in this kernel (e.g. PowerTop not providing useful information). Before I start tuning I would like to be able to measure whether my changes are having any impact at all. Hi, The language lab from the local university has contacted me. They'd like to have a low-cost file server for storing all their language video files. They have a mix of Windows, Mac OS X and even Linux clients, roughly 50 machines. The files are quite big, and they calculated a total amount of 2 To of storage. I'm not very proficient with hardware, meaning either I'm dealing with remote servers in some datacenter, or otherwise I install CentOS desktops on any hardware people throw at me. Since the aim is lowcost, would it be wrong to install that fileserver on a no-name desktop PC with a 64bit processor and enough RAM, and then simply put 2 x 2 To hard disks in it, either with a mirroring RAID (can never remember which does what in 0, 1 and 5) or some rsync script regularly copying over the first disk to the second? Getting Domainkeys, dkim, and SMTP-AUTH/TLS to play nicely together in sendmail

A while back I struggled to get Domainkeys and DKIM to work properly on my little home server. While I'm sure they weren't necessary in a strict sense, it not only enabled me to learn about the technology but allowed for more of a verification of the email coming from my server. And so this week I figured: "Hey, this has been working without a problem for a while; it must be time to screw with something else." Hence my effort to enable SMTP submissions over port 587. At the very least, with some ISPs blocking traffic to port 25, this seemed to be a good idea (as well as providing a better method for sending email using my server from outside my home LAN). I've read a number of write-ups of SMTP AUTH, including the information at sendmail.org. I've run into a snag, however, with the .pem certificate that is used for the DK stuff. The conventional wisdom seems to be to run domainkeys/dkim as a user other than root, and a .pem certificate is required. Therefore, to get this to run properly, the permissions on the certificate need to me 600 or 400, owned by this user. All well and good so far, except that STARTTLS doesn't like this: STARTTLS=server: file /var/db/domainkeys/mail.key.pem unsafe: permission denied When I telnet to the server, port 587, and issue an EHLO, I see neither AUTH nor TLS in the response. The sendmail.mc file contains the line: define(`localCERT',`/ver/db/domainkeys/mail.key.pem')dnl So if there's a different line I can add to indicate to TLS/AUTH that it should use a different cert (or, rather, the same one copied to a different location with different permissions...) I don't know it. Anyone ever run into this before? -Don Levey

DRBD,GFS2 and GNBD without all clustered cman stuff

Hi all, Where i want to arrive: 1) having two storage server replicating partition with DRBD 2) exporting via GNBD from the primary server the drbd with GFS2 3) inporting the GNBD on some nodes and mount it with GFS2 Assuming no logical error are done in the last points logic this is the situation: Server 1: LogVol09, DRDB configured as /dev/drbd0 replicated to Server 2. DRBD seems to work perfect as cat /proc/drbd Server 2: LogVol09, Secondary for /dev/drbd, cat /proc/drbd is ok What i thought to do was to export via GNBD the /dev/drbd0 to import it on a couple of nodes. Using GFS2 as FS for concurrent usage. I got to format the GFS2 FS on the Server 1 drbd0 device. But was unable to mount it because gfs_controld wasn't accepting connections, i discovered that cman manage gfs_controld. In any case i started it manually and discover that it try to use ccsd daemon which i have not installed. Ok, i do not need to mount it locally so i started configuring GNBD, started manualli the server end stated the export command...again the cman/ccsd problem: gnbd_clusterd: ERROR cannot join cman Now, what i'm asking: am i forced to use all the cluster stuff cman, ccsd...fence...with this configuration? I would like only to use the tools i need: DRDB, GNBD and GFS2 without cluster facilities. Thanks Raffaele

ClamAV "clamscan" command using huge amount of RAM

We have a perl cgi script that accepts uploaded files and runs clamscan on them. While observing the system performance I noticed that each clamscan process consumes up to 250MB of RAM. Is this normal for ClamAV? This seems like an enormous amount of RAM, for simply scanning one file for viruses.

Disappearing DNS entry

CentOS 4.8, BIND 9.2.4, DHCP 3.0.1 Hi All: I have a rather perplexing problem where the DNS entry in BIND for one of my network printers sporadically "disappears" from our zone file (but not the reverse zone file). We have four Lexmark printers connected locally over our internal LAN using static IP addresses. We have 3 T640n printers and a T642n printer and it is only the T642n printer that this is happening to. I thought I had it licked when I discovered that both DDNS and mDNS were enabled on this printer but not the others, however disabling those has had no effect. We do use DHCP for the bulk of our Windows workstations and DHCP is configured to update the DNS server and this appears to work fine (once I disabled all the "Register this connection's address in DNS" options on the workstations). I have found one suspicious entry in /var/log/messages: Apr 12 17:34:14 fisds0 named[5210]: client 192.168.2.7#10242: updating zone 'forsoft.com/IN': deleting an RR This would seem to indicate that the printer itself has issued the request to the DNS server but for the life of me I cannot see what might be doing it. Before I'd try to defragment my whole filesystem (see attached mail for whole story) I figured "Let's try it on some file". So I did > xfs_bmap /raid/Temp/someDiskimage.iso [output shows 101 extents and 1 hole] Then I defragmented the file > xfs_fsr /raid/Temp/someDiskimage.iso extents before:101 after:3 DONE > xfs_bmap /raid/Temp/someDiskimage.iso [output shows 3 extents and 1 hole] and now comes the bummer: i wanted to check the fragmentation of the whole filesystem (just for checking): > xfs_db -r /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol04 xfs_db: unexpected XFS SB magic number 0x00000000 xfs_db: read failed: Invalid argument xfs_db: data size check failed cache_node_purge: refcount was 1, not zero (node=0x2a25c20) xfs_db: cannot read root inode (22) THAT output was definitly not there when I did this the last time and therefor the new fragmentation does not make me happy either xfs_db> frag actual 0, ideal 0, fragmentation factor 0.00% The file-system is still mounted and working and I don't dare to do anything about it (am in a mild state of panic) because I think it might not come back if I do. Just finished building a new server for inhouse use. 12.8TB Needed a nfs and samba server which could store 10TB and be reliable. Also wanted to replace out DHCP server and our internal DNS server. So needed to run dnsmasq plus ntp for time serving. This machine replace 3 older units. We used a Supermicro 3U case with 15 sata shuttles and 2N+1 760 Watt PS. On ebay for 300.00 Used a Supermicro H8DME-2 MB cause I had one sitting around. If I was going to buy one it would have been a Tyan S2932G2NR-SI for reliability (we have sold a bunch of these and they always work) Installed dual AMD 2382's and 16 GB DDR2-800 RECC plus 4 wire HSF's. Went to the 3ware online store and purchased a 9550SXU-16ML with the breakout cables for 340.00 Yes, I know its PCI-X. It was inexpensive and it runs almost as fast as the 9650 series at twice the price. Installed 15 pcs of the WD1001FALS disks. Very reliable and low cost even though they are desktop drives. Used these since we always have 3 on the shelf as spares and WD turns a bad one around in about 5 days. We have installed over 200 of these drives in raid arrays and have had 2 fail in the last 6 months. BTW, Initializing took <8 hours not days. Set it up as a Raid 5 array with one hot spare and autorebuild. Have tested it with both Centos 5.4 x86_64 and OpenSUSE 11.1 x86_64. Also installed an LSI SCSI card and a Sony AIT-5 Tape drive with Bacula for data backup and recovery. Again, all worked fine and the machine was able to do backups and keep a GigE connection saturated. Using an in house piece of code called disktest we are seeing 268 MB / sec on writes and 347 MB / sec on reads using 32 GB test files, 131K buffer sizes and single threading. If you would like to see a system that is almost identical, have a look at Coraid.com. They use a dual xeon and a BSD custom kernel. Hope this config helps...... Now I need to add one more script resource to it, but this script resource is not essential, and if it tanks, a restart will certainly be sufficient so I assume I have to create another service so I can tune the Restart Policy Extensions for it, whereas the Recovery Policy for the original remains as Relocate. I have looked all through the wiki and net, but I can't see how to group or tie services together so they always follow each other around? These two services can't be on distinct nodes, anyone have any ideas? Thanks, jlc

CentOS-3, is this what I need?

Hi, I am new to linux and so far I have only used ubuntu. I have developed a python application which I would like package and distribute. The problem with packaging tools such as pyinstaller and cx_freeze is that you have to compile the bootloader first. Now If I compile the loader on karmic 9.10, the binary would suffer from compatibility issue. In other words I won't be able to execute the app on a lower version such as ubuntu 8.04.4 LTS. The solution is to use as much as old libc as you can to compile the bootloader. It seems CentOS-3 is based on glibc 2.3, which is pretty old and if I compile and do other stuff of on CentOS-3, it'll do the job and hopefully covers almost all the end user base that I am expecting will use the app. It may possible that I might face some issues with my requirements mentioned below but I have no practical idea about them. As I mentioned before that I am new to linux and I always prefer to use VirtualBox, when ever I try any new distribution. In short these are my requirements and I would like to know whether CentOS-3 is the right choice for me or not? 1. Use VirtualBox. XP Host & CentOS-3 guest. 2. python 2.6.4 3. wxPython 2.8.10.1 from wxWidgets repository 4. libcairo 1.8.8 5. pycairo 1.8.6 6. couple of other python modules. Are these packages available or if not can be downloaded from other repositories? I am also concerned about my requirements that whether they themselves will suffer from binary dependency issue or not because I of using CentOS-3. Some one also suggested that you should also compile your requirements(python, wxpython etc.) along with the bootloader and this would make your package and underlying libraries backward compatible and lesser chance of any failure. Hi, I wanted to set up Clonezilla Tools on my client machine via PXE Boot. How do I do it. I got information from the web, but after making changes in the dhcpd.conf file, the dhcpd fails to start. Amazon S3FS Automounter of sorts

Hi, I¹ve just started using Amazon S3 for storage and have used s3fs to mount the buckets on the file system. 1. I was wondering if anyone has a better method even though this meets my current needs. 2. if there is an automounter that could be tweaked to work with s3fs. The entries in my fstab are rather different to the normal disk based ones, s3fs#BUCKETNAME /mnt/s3/BUCKETNAME fuse allow_other,default_acl=public-read,noauto 0 0 ,so I wasn¹t sure if it is possible. My reasoning to want an automounter is I¹m not sure on the amount of extra calls made to the S3, so would prefer it not be connected if its not needed. ACER T230H touchscreen problem!

Could not find ramdisk image:images/622c.img boot : So, it's reading the configuration, but not loading the CentOS boot image. /var/log/messages doesn't give my any errors on this (yes I know how to read /var/log/messages) Does anyone know how to get pxeboot to output debug messages to syslog? OR,what am I doing wrong? The tutorials I got on the net are rather vague on this. How to log separate files or directories for centralizing SysLog server ?

Hi All, I have three server. server0 is centralized logging server, server1 and server2 are remote client servers. How can I properly configure the syslog in server0 to log the two servers in different separated files/directories. Example, server1 will be logged at /var/log/syslog/server1.log of server0 and /var/log/syslog/server2.log for server2 as well. Is there need of little tweaking for syslog.conf ? Thanks. James

Installing a .ko file?

Hi All, I am trying to add a 3Ware 9500S-8 RAID controller to a CentOS 5.4 box. I have the drivers from 3Ware and they seem to be a .ko file (which I presume is like a .kext on OSX) How do I install these? Searched turn up people talking about Kernel panics with .ko's but I dont see anything that points to to installing one so I can use the card. Best, -Jason

How long will CENTOS 4.X automatic resync to to time server???

We have several CENTOS 4 and 5 servers. ALL CENTOS servers have NTP setup to sync time server. Several days ago due to power outage all servers are reboot. Due to DNS server did NOT up quickly, CENTOS servers start up and can NOT find time server. For CENTOS 5.X servers, it did quickly resync to time server after 30 minutes. For CENTOS 4.X servers, it have been 3 days still NOT sync to time server. I know I can run "service ntpd restart" to force server sync to time server, but I like to know how long it take for CENTOS 4.X automatic resync to time server. Thanks.

Dropbox has an RPM for Fedora Core 9 (x86). I am running CentOS 5.4 on my Desktop, which I believe is based on Fedora Core 6. Are the libraries Fedora Core 9 uses substantially different than those CentOS 5.4 uses? If Dropbox had an SRPM available, I would Download that and Rebuild, but I'm sure it is Proprietary and they won't release an SRPM to me. TIA! 'p' in boot selector & going into single-user

On boot, when I hit the F12 key to bring up the boot menu, the screen displays the various kernels and other boot options. In the text below this menu it says I can hit 'p' to bring up a menu with other options. I've done this with the last two boot-ups and no other menu or options appear. Is something missing? (I also tried Alt-p, Shift-p, Ctrl-p and a few other keys and there's no change onscreen.) I'd like to know also how to select single user mode, but haven't found a way to do that. Thanks much.

mysterious weekly shutdown

I have a Centos 5.4 machine that has, for the past two weeks, apparently been shut off over the weekend. It's just sitting there turned off on Monday morning and when someone hits the power switch it comes right back on and everything works again. Performance problems with XFS on Centos 5.4

Hi! During the last weeks I experienced some performance problems with a large file-system on XFS basis. Sometimes for instance ls is painfully. Immidiatly afterwards ls on the same directory is immidiate. I used strace on this ls and found that during the first ls the lstat-calls need approx 0.02s each while during the second ls the are two orders of magnitude faster. Googling around I stumbled upon some messages similar like this http://www.opensubscriber.com/message/linux-xfs@oss.sgi.com/1355060.html which have in common a) they're from around 2006 b) they suggest to increase a mount-option ihashsize. This mount option is listed as deprecated in the current kernel-doc So my question: does anyone have experience with that kind of performance problem? Do you think it is a XFS problem or are there some other tuning parameters in the kernel that could be modified for instance via /proc? The reason why I'm asking here is that it is a production file-system so I would be very unpopular if I experiment too much (a couple of reboots is OK ;) ) Bernhard PS: the situation got worse during the last weeks when the file-system increased in size, so the option that some kind of buffer now is too small and I'm experiencing some kind of thrashing seems very likely to me

I am having a problem with 5.4 that I did not have with 4.5. The problem happens only sometimes but in specific instances. Basically a summary of the problem is that certain network transactions timeout. The specfic instances are with wget, rpm, http. The problem usually, but not always, occurs with pptp stuff. (NOT running pptp but getting pptp stuff). For instance, the following command, which finishes in seconds on non-5.4 OS's: wget http://pptpclient.sourceforge.net/yum/stable/rhel4/pptp-release-current.noa… downloads about 20% then gets stuck. About 5 minutes later it downloads another 20% and then gets stuck, etc. The same thing with rpm: rpm -ivh http://pptpclient.sourceforge.net/yum/stable/rhel4/pptp-release-current.noa… waits about 3 minutes and then gives an error. I think it does the same thing as the wget but wget will keep trying, while rpm gives up. The error from rpm: Retrieving http://pptpclient.sourceforge.net/yum/stable/rhel4/pptp-release-current.noa… ..five minutes later: error: /var/tmp/rpm-xfer.DYY9e0: headerRead failed: hdr blob(7456): BAD, read returned 3568 error: /var/tmp/rpm-xfer.DYY9e0 cannot be installed I can wget the above as I mentioned before and install it that way. Before I do it, yum works fine. Afterwards, yum exhibits the same behavior of timing out (because it is using the pptp repository). Also visiting the pptp web site from Firefox times out on certain pages. I originally thought it was some problem with the pptp site, but I notice that log into hotmail.com does the same thin (fine on other operating systems). A view with Wireshark on the wget (pptp) shows the my machine receiving a reassembled TCPPDU from 216.34.181.96 (Sourceforge), sending an ack, receiving a reassembled PDU, sending an ack, receiving, sending followed by the 5 minutes or whatever of nothing. Then sourceforge sends an RST and a SYN and the process is repeated. Here is what I tried. When I put the machine directly on an AT&T IP connection (12.147.X.Y) everything worked fine. Same with Comcast on a direct link. The times I am having problems is when our router is hooked up to a Comcast IP (70.88.X.Y) and assigns 192.168.5.X addresses to our machines. So when I was doing the above from 192.168.5.27 going through the router through Comcast is when I had the problem. So it is probably something with the router, but it is hard to figure out since CentOS 4.5 and Fedora do not exhibit this behavior, nor does 5.4 on most sites (mail.yahoo.com for instance). I did verify, at least from what I could, that ICMP type 3 and 4 are not being blocked. If they were, the same problem would happen on other op systems. And I was able to ping, albeit just locally, but we looked at the router settings and ping was not blocked. Anyone else have this problem / know what might be wrong?

Hi All, My one server recently started acting very weird. At fist I couldn't import any images with cobbler as rsync crashes the whole time. I was told to ask on the cobbler list (maybe it's not supported here?) but I left it at that (subscribed to far too many lists already). Yesteday I wanted to copy some stuff from a USB disk to the server (using rsync to update the files which have changed, or new files) but it seems like rsync hangs without any errors. Now, when I tried to update CentOS I get the same "error" in that yum hangs. At the same time I can open a new SSH session and do whatevery I like. But it seems that running a command which takes time to complete hangs. NAT/DHCP/DNS/etc Settings from a Windows 2003 Server

Hello all. I'm in the process of making a small server farm based mostly on Windows Server 2003. For simplicity's sake, the only non-2003 server will be a CentOS 5.4 server running only vsftpd, httpd, and mysqld. My plan is to have this server in a 2003 Server's network receiving a DHCP address from the Domain Controller. Currently, I have two other (non-DC) servers running with no issues on the domain. NAT works as it should, and internet access is just fine. The CentOS box on the same network will not receive an IP address (only through static configuration, the non-DC 2003 boxes have no problem receiving an IP and DNS settings with auto settings) or get online. Even when defining a static IP on the CentOS box, there is no Internet access, unlike to the other clients. My question is, what could be restricting the DHCP and DNS information to the CentOS host, and why can't I access the internet/NAT forward a web server? To summarize, I have four machines involved, all located on the same network: - Machine 1 - Windows Server 2003 Enterprise - Domain Controller, DHCP server, DNS server, NAT server. - Machine 2 - Windows Server 2003 Enterprise - Domain member, Exchange server. - Receives DHCP and DNS information with automatic network settings. - Has internet access through NAT. - NAT forwards ports to this host. - Machine 3 - Windows Server 2003 Enterprise - Domain member, Sharepoint Server. - Receives DHCP and DNS information with automatic network settings. - Has internet access through NAT. - NAT forwards ports to this host. - *Machine 4* - CentOS 5.4 - On same network as other clients, hosts web server. - Does *NOT *receive DHCP address or DNS information. - Has *no *internet access - NAT does *NOT *forward correctly. I am looking for a solution to get the CentOS server on the network like the other clients. Any assistance on this problem would be greatly appreciated. David

I have two needs that require offsite hosting now, anyone know offhand of any of the unlimited storage/bandwidth vendors that exist now that allow remote scp|rsync access to the data, not just "in shell scp use"? I'm hunting around and its apparently hard to get a straight answer... vps or dedicated is overkill for this one need, and none of those offerings have the storage/bandwidth of the hosting only solutions.
