I have some machines based with following specs (see at the end of the email). They run CentOS 5.4 x86_64 with the latest patches applied, Xen-enabled and should host one or more domUs. I put the domUs' storage on LVM, as I learnt ages ago (what never caused any problems) and is way faster than using file-based 'images'. However, there's something special about these machines: They have the new WD EARS series drives, which use 4K sector sizes. So, I booted a rescue system and used fdisk to start at sector 64 instead of 63 (long story made short: Due to overhead causing the drive to do much more, inefficient writes when starting at sector 63, the performance collapses; with 'normal' geometry (sector 63), the drive achieves about 25MiByte/sec writes, with starting at sector 64 partition, it achieves almost 100MiByte/sec writes): [root@server2 ~]# fdisk -ul /dev/sda Disk /dev/sda: 1000.2 GB, 1000204886016 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 121601 cylinders, total 1953525168 sectors Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 * 64 2097223 1048580 fd Linux raid autodetect Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary. /dev/sda2 2097224 18876487 8389632 82 Linux swap / Solaris /dev/sda3 18876488 1953525167 967324340 fd Linux raid autodetect On top of those (two per machine) WD EARS HDs there's ``md'' providing two RAID1, /boot and LVM, as well as swap per HD (i.e. non-RAIDed). LVM provides the / partition as well as LVs for Xen domUs. I have about 60 machines running that style and never had any problems. They run like a charm. On these machines, however, domUs are *very* slow, have a steady (!) load of about two -- 50% stating in 'wait' -- and all operations take ages, e.g. a ``yum update'' with the recently released updates. Now, can that be due to 4K issues I didn't see, nestet now in LVM? Help is very appreciated. Success moving Xen LVMs from 32 to 64bit host

Just wanted to share some success I had moving some Xen guests from one server to another. Problem Recap We had Xen host on a single core 32-bit CentOS 5.4 installation on an AMD Athlon 2.1 GhZ system that was giving hard drive errors and needed to move the LVM-backed Xen images to another server. The replacement server was a quad-core AMD Phenom system running 64-bit CentOS 5.4. Our original plan was to use LVM snapshots so that we wouldn't need a maintenance window. This worked fine in test, but we decided to bring down the Xen guests after all. After shutting down the systems we backed up the LVMs. To show the backing LV: lvdisplay /dev/rootvg/xm_c32_001 >From this, we grabbed the "Current LE" field and LV Size. We used LV Size to create a temporary mount point. We used the "Current LE" parameter to create an identically sized LV on the replacement server . On the failing server: dd if=/dev/rootvg/xm_c32_001 of=/mnt/backup/xm_c32_001.out We gzip'ed the resulting .out file and saved it as a backup. +++Footnote BTW, there are many recommendations to do the following on the virtual machine: dd if=/dev/zero bs=1024 count=xxxx of=/partition.out rm partition.out By creating the large empty file on each partition *in the guest istance* (/var, /, /home, etc.), it will improve the image compression. Space was not much of a concern and we were worried about blowing out a production system, so we opted not to do this. +++Footnote Once the backing LVM was created, we created the LV on the replacement server: lvcreate -l xxx -n xm_c32_001 rootvg Then used dd to recreate the file: dd if=xm_c32_001.out of=/dev/rootvg/xm_c32_001 Next, we copied the /etc/xen/xm_c32_001 configuration file to the replacement server. We generated a new UUID using the "uuidgen" utility. We also created a new MAC address. Finally, we started the instance: xm create xm_c32_001 Everything came up, but no network. From the root console we logged in then edited the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0. Xen had apparently renamed the script and put in a DHCP configuration. We just renamed the backup file and commented out the MAC address line and restarted networking, *and* ifdown eth0 then ifup eth0. It took a few seconds for the network to properly discover the new MAC address. Once that was done, everything worked beautifully.

Greetings all, I am using Centos-5.3 in my server which is running dns, apache and mail. When the power went off and back then all of my services are not be able to run, i visited log files esp for httpd it says read-only and httpd cant start, this cause all of my services to stop. i tried to fix by fsck but still i cant be able to log in my mails via web access because httpd is not running, in short all services stopped. I need help, what to do so that to change the read-only mode, i cant even delete any file. After running fsck and reboot now it reached:- (none) login: and if i type root gives incorrect. Wireless Made Easy (for Home Desktops)

For those of you who use a wireless router and may work on one or two (or even several) machines in your computer room, an AP Client is a nice solution. When you move to another machine you can just move the wireless net adapter to the new machine and you're up and running on the network immediately. I've been using a D-Link G730AP for a while -- but it's not really made for this -- it's a pocket adapter meant to carry with you laptop. And, unlike my old Asus WL-330, it won't hook up to a switch. Asus also makes a more powerful, larger, wireless AP/Client/Bridge/Reapeater, the WL-320gE. I bought two of these on eBay and they work great as Clients (network adapters) or "Stations" in Asus talk. They have a range of 850 meters (as compared to the pocket AP's range of 40 meters) so, in my room, I've got the full speed of my Cable wirelessly. It's three to four times faster than the D-Link G730AP, and it's solid (the D-Link was iffy). But, more importantly, I can hook it up to a wired (standard) switch and have as many simultaneous network connections as ports in the switch (in this case, four -- but I only use two). I've also set one up in the back of the house with a switch for my son's computers -- through several walls they're still getting very fast service. This is the only way I've used this device, but a lot of people buy them as repeaters. (I could mine up a repeater/client and my kids would have an even stronger single, but it's not necessary.) Another feature of Asus is that you can use it simultaneously as a bridge and as a wired client. It works well, the documentation is a bit inadequate, but it doesn't take long to "translate." Anyhow, I've rambled again. The reason I bring this up is that these things are currently selling for $25 on eBay -- which is about the cost of mid-range USB adapter. Virtual Machine Path Issue

All, I'm running CentOS 5.3 x86_64 and I decided to install VMware Server 2.0.2 and all went without a hitch. I then created a Virtual Machine and used CentOS 5.4 x86_32 ISO image to build it. While I was customizing the built image, I attempted a 'find' command and received a message that the command could not be found. I checked root's path statement and found some strange entries (i.e. /usr/bini). Once I corrected those entries all seems to be working fine now. I don't have a physical platform to test the ISO on, so I must remain in the virtual arena. How can I tell if this is an error with the ISO or something going crazy during the VM build? kexec for CentOS 4?

I have a remote CentOS 4 machine on a network where I can't put a DHCP or PXE server, and I want to do a complete reinstall. So what I want to do is, from the currently-running system, to invoke an installation kernel and initrd in just the same way that GRUB would, giving it a boot command line that specifies a remote kickstart file, installation tree, and other required info. It looks like kexec is the right tool to do this, but I have only been able to find it for CentOS 5. Does anyone know where I could get kexec for CentOS 4? Does the CentOS 4 kernel support it? If not, are there any other ways to achieve what I've described? Moving hard drives

Hi All, I have a server that is running nicely, except I have hit the maximum RAM (4gb) and I wish to add more. It is an ASUS board, AMD X64 dual core, nvidia nic. What I want going to move to is a dell board, Intel Pentium M dual code, which supports 8gb of RAM. Can I just unplug the HD and move it to the new server and boot it up? I assume that the NIC will need to be re-setup, but what other issues would there be? I am not running X at all. Doing apache, zimbra, mysql. Best, -Jason

has anyone heard of UnRaid at: http://lime-technology.com/ Seems interesting, runs from USB. What I like is that you can add drives to your array without having to destroy it. And it lets you add any size drive that you want. You can mix, say 1tb and 2tb drives. What other ways can I do this without UnRAID? Its limitation is that you cant do anything else and I would want to run other things like apache, mysql, etc. -Jason

issues with 3rd party repos for centos

i'm reading the lowdown on 3rd party repos with respect to centos here: http://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalResources/Repositories and i have a couple questions and observations. first, the entry for centosplus reads: "Popular packages from this repository include: postfix with database support, a rebuilt kernel with additional drivers & filesystem support, php5 and mysql5." however, i popped over to the centosplus packages site: http://mirror.centos.org/centos-5/5.4/centosplus/ and checked under x86_64, but i don't see any php or mysql packages. am i misreading something? next, regarding remi collet's repo: "Has been recommended on the mailing list and forum for mysql 5.1 and php5.2.9." however, if you check over there (say, under x86_64): http://rpms.famillecollet.com/enterprise/5/remi/x86_64/repoview/development… remi appears to already be up to php 5.3.1 (and even 5.3.2 under the "test" link), so the centos wiki page is a bit out of date. finally, all i want is to install PHP 5.3.x (and, obviously, dependent packages) on a stock centos 5.4 system. is remi collet's repo a good choice for that? the centos wiki recommends "extreme caution" for that repo, which makes me nervous. more to the point, are there any serious issues involving bumping up php to 5.3.1 on a stock centos 5.4 system while leaving everything else where it is? rday -- ======================================================================== Robert P. Hi, I'm currently writing an install script for an application, and my already limited Bash skills are a bit rusty. I want to check if a group exists, and if it doesn't, then create it. Only thing I found is: if [ grep medintux /etc/group ]; then continue else groupadd medintux fi Apparently I can't seem to "negate" the test, e. g. something like if !(grep medintux /etc/group) Any suggestions for the correct syntax here ? cron mystery

I've just noticed that cron.daily, etc, do not seem to be running on my CentOS-5.4 system. The scripts in /etc/cron.d/ all run fine, but those in /etc/cron.hourly, etc, seem to be ignored. I see that according to /var/log/cron these commands are seen, eg Feb 28 18:01:01 helen crond[6680]: (root) CMD (run-parts /etc/cron.hourly) but none of the scripts in this directory seem to be touched. I've tried running them by hand, and this seems to work fine. CentOS 4.8 - PHP Version 5.1.6 and SQLite

I wish to use the SQLite extensions for php but the version I updated to with yum update (see above) was compiled '--without-sqlite'. I could sure use some help getting these extensions enabled. As I am unfamiliar with OOP the references to PDO on the web have been meaningless to me. Furthermore, a trip to the local book store today (Barnes & Noble) revealed no php books that even mention PDO! PHP.net documentation seems to be written as if PDO is the preferred method but I cannot even get a simple query to execute. Alternatively, can someone point me to a reference that shows actual examples of how to use PDO and SQLite? emergency! linux kickstart pxe boot needed

Hey folks, I'm at colocaiton in the middle of a big rebuild and it seems I have a faulty CD rom in the server that I need to put Centos on via Kickstart. So I cannot boot the Centos 5.4 net install CD. Is PXE kickstart easy to set up? I have a laptop here with DHCP already going. I google and a bunch of stuff comes up but it does not look simple. LDAP Server Access Problem

Hi All, I am at my wits end. I have a LDAP server setup on a machine (the names are changed to protect the innocent) example.mydomain.com running CentOS 5.4 and LDAP version 2.3.43-3. If I issue a ldapsearch command while logged onto the LDAP server host I get a valid response back. For example: > ldapsearch -x -LLL -H ldaps://example.mydomain.com:636 "(uid=joker)" \ > sn uid dn: uid=joker,ou=People,dc=mydomain,dc=com uid: joker sn: Nicholson Everything works as expected. However if I try the same command from a remote machine remote.mydomain.com the command just hangs. I can not find a log entry anywhere that indicates something is wrong. I have checked the obvious things I can check. Ok, I saw more sectors on a drive yesterday, so this morning, no one was running on it, and I took it out of use, then bounced it onto a DVD, and ran fsck -c (check for bad blocks). It finished. I bounce the server. And SMARTD reports the sectors as "currently unreadable (pending) sectors", and "offline uncorrectable sectors". Does smartd cache its info somewhere, or is it reading what fsck already marked as bad? And this has happened before, under 5.3, and under continuing current updates of 5.4.... mark

rkhunter doesn't remove temp suspscan files in /dev/shm

Alle, I know this is off-topic, so I apologize in advance, but we have installed rkhunter from EPEL (because it has the current version, 1.3.6 vice the 1.3.4 rpmforge version) on our CentOS machine and find that it does not remove the files in /dev/shm it uses for the SUSPSCAN test, this triggering a warning for said test. This was a known bug that was supposed to be have been fixed in V1.3.1. I can't find an EPEL mailing list to send the question to, so I'm hoping someone here can point me in the right direction. I had used and old kvm-87 on centos 5.4 x86_64 I was wanting ot update that and use the newer qemu-kvm-0.12.3 I downloaded that and everything was good there - but the kernel modules are not included. So I downloaded (or started to download) kvm-kvod something... but there is nothing there for 2.6.18? How do I get the correct 2.6.18 version? Jerry

rack configurator?

Hey folks, Does anyone know of a rack configurator that runs on CentOS? It does not have to even be very fancy - immediately I'm just looking for an easy way to keep track of what is in my racks, and being able to have a visual of it. Maybe juggle stuff around. Bonus if it does power calculations based on model numbers and so on - or data I punch in for each model. But really right now some kind of very specific CAD or Draw tool that is specific to this purpose. Hi We have an issue with one of our clients , they have a mail server with the /var/spool/imap partition as 150 GB . They need to take differential backup on to /backup partition ( a different HDD of total 250 GB space ) . We have tried dar , rsync, rdiff and impasync . But its is not sufficing the need as to take a lot of time and consumes a lot of I/O . Noticing that the PHP4 binaries with CentOS4 are compiled with the option: --enable-sysvshm but not with the --enable-sysvmsg option. They are very closely related, and we'd like to use the msg_get_queue() function for an application cluster. Is there any reason why this is so? Is it too much to ask to have this added? I just installed VirtualBox latest version on a new Win7 Pro x86_64 desktop, and tried to create a 64bit CentOS 4.8 install for doing some procedural testing... all install attempts hung at the samme place, shortly after grub, it hangs at... Dquot-cache hash table entries: 512 (order 0, 4096 bytes) sadly, I didn't capture the rest of the console output prior to that. 32bit 4.8 boots and installs just fine. CPU is a Intel Core2Duo E7600 which supposedly has VT-x. System is a Dell Optiplex 755 (Intel G45 chipset) anyone got a clue ?

Centos won't rebuild stuff that's in epel, rpmforge or any other third party repo, these packages should work the same on rhel and centos precisely because centos aims to be as close to rhel as possible. Also note that 3.1.0 is the latest stable release of backuppc. This is the version that you installed from c5-testing. It's also the same version offered in epel. 3.1.0-5 from one repo is not necessarily better than 3.1.0-1 from another: it's the same upstream code, the -5 is only useful for comparing within a given repo.

Desperately need help with multi-core NIC performance

Hi, I am running a VOIP application on Centos 5.3. It is a 16 core box with 12 G of mem and all what it does is passing packets. What happens is that at around 2K channels running g711 ( 64k) codec, all eth0 is used up and no more traffic can go through. I have checked google and it talked about interrupt scheduler. does anyone know how to configure the kernel to allow it to use all CPSs for socket transmission of UDP packets? Any pointer will be greatly appreciated. pete

I had a need on a centos 5.4 x86_64 box to try and run with a later totem. I desired to do this by source. After installing the packages below my system comes up, I thought everything was good. thunderbird comes up firefox comes up. totem works -------- however there seems to be an issue with closing or opening windows some random time later with all three programs. It gives the impression that X is hung. Keyboard no longer works - mouse moves but cannot click on anything. ssh into the box still works. I can kill the X server and start all up again for a random time then it looks like it hangs again. I am wondering if anyone knows what this might be - perhaps another package I need to update. I am also running a radeon 3200 driver with the Catalyst binary driver. Thanks for your thoughts. multi-seated configuration

is anyone using a multi-seated configuration with CentOS? I'm thinking about buying a two 2 headed nvidia card to run 4 separate monitors and 4 separate keyboards and mice. I don't mind using either proprietary or opensource nvidia drivers. I'm looking for more information regarding centos and multiseated configurations. I've read a bit about fedora and ubuntu with multiseating, but I haven't found much with CentOS. I'm fairly new to this so I would need pretty good documentation / hand holding to accomplish this. Any information would be helpful. -Andy

sudo for Virtual Machine Manager

I've done everything stated in the various guidance to get a regular user to use virt-manager (graphical Virtual Machine Manager) under CentOS 5.4 with KVM. Placing the user in the kvm group and changing permissions on several files to include kvm has not worked...the user still needs to enter the root password to use the graphical VMM. I thought of pressing sudo into service for this task. Anyone think this will work? Anyone got a better way? DaveM

What to backup?

Hi All, I am now working on a plan of what to backup from various servers that I have running I run Apache, so httpd.conf and /var/www/html I run Zimbra currently, so /opt/zimbra/store, /opt/zimbra/my.cnf and /opt/zimbra/db/ I run MySQL, so /etc/my.cnf and /var/lib/mysql Can I simply write a bash script to tar.gz these areas, scp them and put it in a cron job? Is there anything special that I have to do with MySQL since it is running? If helpful, I can take what I learn and update the Wiki if there is not already a procedure for doing these operations on it. -Jason

CentOS 5.3 host not seeing storage device

Maybe one of you has experienced something like this before. I have a host running CentOS5.3, x86_64 version with the standard qla2xxx driver. Both ports are recognized and show output in dmesg but they never find my storage device: qla2xxx 0000:07:00.1: LIP reset occured (f700). qla2xxx 0000:07:00.1: LIP occured (f700). qla2xxx 0000:07:00.1: LIP reset occured (f7f7). qla2xxx 0000:07:00.0: LOOP UP detected (4 Gbps). qla2xxx 0000:07:00.0: SNS scan failed -- assuming zero-entry result... qla2xxx 0000:07:00.1: LOOP UP detected (4 Gbps). qla2xxx 0000:07:00.1: SNS scan failed -- assuming zero-entry result... The storage device is a virtual tape library on an HP d2d server. On the storage device I have configured the virtual tape drive and controller. I've also added the WWNs from the server and storage into a zone on our fiber switch, and made the zone config live. Anyone have some suggestions where I can start troubleshooting this?

Dear All I have disassembled the object file on my CentOS server , by the following : #objdump wmain In the output , I have recognized the intended subroutine that I need to find the exact command syntax that it sends out . To this end , I tried to capture it through 'tcpdump' but didn't success . I read this segment assembly language code but it is somewhat difficult to decode . Can you please let me know what CentOS decompiler is suitable for this case ? recover data on usb drive

Hi gang I just did a really stupid thing... I did fdisk and removed the ext3 partition on my 500GB external USB drive, thinking I was working on a usb stick instead. ugh. then I did 'mkdosfs' on it. ugh ugh. Before messing with it any more at all, what good ideas can you all suggest for trying to get my data back? Please don't tell me it's all gone (though I"m afraid it is). this was a backup from a Lacie 2bigNetwork that's off for repair, so if I really have trashed it my family is gonna kill me. :( Especially my son who had all his anime on the 2big. change network switch need 'arp" clear cache?

we plan to change network switch and firewall machine to new one. Network engineer told me after switch and firewall equipment change I may need run 'arp ..." to clear out cache on every CENTOS servers due to switch and firewall MAC address change. we have 30 to 40 CENTOS 4.X and 5.X my affect. my question are: 1. does switch and firewall equipment change need LINUX client clear cache? 2. if needed, how to clear cache and get new info about switch and firewall?

boot.log no message on CENTOS 5.X?

I found CENTOS 5.X boot.log is empty but CENTOS 4.X it does have messages in it. cd /var/log # ls -al boot* -rw------- 1 root root 0 Feb 21 04:02 boot.log -rw------- 1 root root 0 Feb 14 04:02 boot.log.1 -rw------- 1 root root 0 Feb 7 04:02 boot.log.2 -rw------- 1 root root 0 Jan 31 04:02 boot.log.3 -rw------- 1 root root 0 Jan 24 04:02 boot.log.4 Does anyone know how to setup boot.log include boot message on CENTOS 5.X? For those who may forget, usin torrents to download and share the new images will get you faster downloads (if enough folks participate) if you have a "fat" pipe and alleviate the load on the CentOS servers. I have a "chubby" pipe (~ 1.2MB/sec) and got the stuff really quickly earlier today. If your torrent has distributed hash table capability, I suggest that you also use that feature. eSATA drive enclosure of a full PC?

HI All, I have a dilemma and I would appreciate advice 1. Get a good size case, mobo, processor, etc and put 8 hard drives it in and RAID them. (yes an 8 port SATA mobo). Running CentOS. or 2. Get an eSATA enclosure that has room for 8 or 10 drives and just connect it to box? I know that RAID is not a full proof backup, but I am looking for a solution to store all of my data, projects, music, etc, etc Can I get thoughts for ideas for solutions? Thank You -Jason

recommendations for SMS/EMS/MMS software simulation?

perhaps an open-ended request, but i'm looking for (if it even exists) some centos 5.4 software that will let me completely simulate the sending and reception of MMS messages on a local network which (AFAICT) would require the simulation of the MMS centre as well (MMSC). so far, i've run across (yum-installable) gammu and i'm just starting to take a look at it. but if anyone out there has already been down that road, i'm open to recommendations. i'm just getting immersed in the world of messaging systems and if there's something that would allow me to simulate all of this on a local network, i would be a deliriously happy puppy. thanks. rday -- ======================================================================== Robert P. Dear All My CentOS server got hung and when I tried to power cycle it , I checked its /var/log/messages & /var/log/dmesg with respect to the time of fault occurance to see what was really happened . But its 'messages' log does not show anything recorded for about 30 minutes before its recovery after power cycling . Can you please let me know where I can check to find the root cause of failure ? I want to do a reboot of a couple of systems during our maintenance window and fsck them, but would rather try it from home first and not go to the data center. Then of course rush there like a madman if they don't come back up :-) There was a suggestion in the 2nd thread above that with ext3 this should not be required with proper hardware (my paraphrase). I'm using all IBM stuff - x3550, x3650, x3800 and some of the earlier models like x330. I can't imagine this being an issue. Greetings, Scenario: Centos box with eth1 (10.0.0.0/24) and eth0 (192.168.0.0/24) segment on eth0 has access to full bandwidth of uplink Both are on 100mbps switches Requirements: bandwith on segment on eth1 needs to be throttled to different speeds - say 32, 64, 128kbps and the such. Required for application performance testing purposes. As usual my girlfriend google is very verbose. (Sometimes I feel there should be utility like googlegrep or something :\ ) I am going through the excellent documentation from: http://linux-ip.net/articles/Traffic-Control-HOWTO LARTC.org Its all a bit too much for me to handle at this point in time and I am a bit pressed for time. CentOS magic to Active Directory login?

I've been trying to follow samba, centos, ldap, and other documentation to try and get a CentOS 5 box to permit a user to log into an existing Windows 200x Active Directory domain without necessarily having the box as part of the domain. If it has to be part of the domain, that is fine. The user shall have no local account on the box - I want their active directory account to automatically produce their account on the CentOS 5 box, likely with a shell of bash. None of the web pages I've visited thus far have helped me configure my test C5 box to allow me to successfully at least log into the console of my C5 box with my AD credentials. Leads to proper configuration of krb5.conf, ldap config files, smb.conf, nsswitch.conf, and whatever else would be most appreciated. I do have have any control of the Windows domain controller other than limited admin rights, which largely allows me to create computer accounts. Thus, majority of the work must be with the CentOS 5, of which I have root and can rebuild as often as needed. Thanks for any help/leads. Scott

If you can run each HDD on it's own port, you'll get optimal performance. For a cheap in-office storage, I use these: http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&safe=off&q=icy+dock&cid=704673… It's basically a hot-swap cage, but I need to manually tell the OS that the drive was removed, since it doesn't run on a server back-plane. Problem updating curl

Hello everyone, I am having some difficulty updating curl on my updated CentOS 5.4 box (CentOS release 5.4 (Final)). I have a client that is needing a library (librets) updated. I have version 1.3.38 installed, but they need 1.3.40. When I try to build that library, it tells me that it requires curl 7.18.2 or greater. I found information for building an updated curl packages (7.20.0 in this case), and was able to successfully build those rpm packages, but when I try to install them, I get the following error: libcurl.so.3 is needed by (installed) gnupg-1.4.5-14.i386 The curl packages that I built (from source 7.20.0) are trying to install libcurl.so.4 (libcurl.so.4.2.0 specifically). I checked and the curl package 7.18.2 will also build libcurl.so.4, so that wouldn't help me in this case. Is anyone aware of anyway of getting around this without rebuilding gnupg as well? I am just afraid that if I have to rebuild the gnupg package also, it will cause many other dependency issues that will completely break my system. NFS client firewall config?

Hi all, Which ports do I need to have open on an NFS client's firewall to allow it to connect to a remote NFS servers? When I disable iptables (using ConfigServerFirewall), it connects fine, but as soon as I enable it, NFS gives me this error: root@saturn:[~]$ mount master1.mydomain.co.za:/saturn /bck mount: mount to NFS server 'master1.mydomain.co.za' failed: RPC Error: Unable to send. I have added ports 111 & 2049 in both the TCP & UDP ingres & exgress ranges, but that doesn't seem to help. portmap & nfs is running as well. But as I say, as soon as I disable the firewall, it mounts fine. CentOS and Bash History

Hi, I was wondering if bash or inputrc has changed form CentOS v4 to CentOS v5? Reason I ask is at the bash cli I can type, for example 'su' and then with the up and down arrows I can scroll through my history and will only see the commands that begin with 'su'. In CentOS 5 this isn't the case. I have added some code to my inputrc file to make this work in CentOS 4 as follows: # Search History for previous used commands "\M-[A":history-search-backward "\M-[B":history-search-forward "\M-[C":forward-char "\M-[D":backward-char And this works well in CentOS 4 but I cannot get it to work in CentOS 5. Resizing a PV that belongs within a Volume Group?

Hi, I was wondering if there was a way to extend (ie: grow) a PV that is part of a Volume Group? I currently have a partition on my HD that is being used as a PV for my Volume Group, but would like to make it larger. I have the space on my drive to extend my partition, but using standard tools (ex: gparted, Partition Magic, etc) would likely end up corrupting the data on in the Logical Volumes that are housed within the VG. I realize that I could just create a new partition on my HD and just add it to my Volume Group and extend my Volume Group, however, given that it would be two contiguous partitions on the HD, I was just wondering if there was a way of resizing the original partition within the VG without causing any problems. I tried looking at tools like pvresize but I can't seem to understand the right arguments to use it as whatever I try never seems to resize the original partition itself. I also looked at system-config-lvm GUI tool, but that doesn't seem to allow me to make the PV any larger. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks! Eric

best practice: how to setup a central "network installation server"?

Hi, I want to setup a central installation server, but haven't done this before, so I want to find out what would be best practices for this? The server I have already runs as a central repo, which is updated from one or our local centos mirrors, and the other CentOS servers (both i386 & x64), as well as CentOS VPS's get their updates from this server. But, now I want to allow a client to perform a quick network installation, using either a netbood CD, or preferably with the server's network bootrom. I understand this can be done with bootp, or am I on the wrong track? the server is a general file server and also acts as our in-office internet gateway, and has Webmin installed for convenience sake. I don't know if this is of any use? Generally we would be (re)installing CentOS servers & desktops, but I guess it could be useful for other distro's like Fedora Core / Debian / FreeBSD? / etc. What would be a good option to go for, or could someone point me to a good documentation? Doing a google search I found a lot of instructions on how to perform a network installation on the client PC's, but not how to configure the server. Dependency problem with yum-utils when installing Cobbler on CentOS

Hi I'm trying to set up a Cobbler server, and when I run "cobbler check", I got the following message: The following potential problems were detected: #0: yum-utils need to be at least version 1.1.17 for reposync -l, current version is 1.1.16 [root@tannat ~]# I'm using Cobbler 1.6.6-1, CentOS-5.4 (x86_64), and (as the message says), yum-utils 1.1.16. Server HD failed and I think I am hosed

a hd in my server failed. I noticed when I went to SSH in and get a copy of some files in /var/www/html I tried to tar the files and I was told No, read-only file system. I restarted and tried running FSCK manually (without -a or -p) and I get inode errors, short reads, etc. I tried booting to my CentOS 53 install DVD. I do linux rescue and I get to where it wants to know where CentOS images are. I select local CD-ROM and it just spits it out at me and tells me to try someplace else. Even though I booted from the CD! I am not sure what else to do. I dont think I can mount this on my macBook to do anything. But I really need just the data from /var/www/html. I have a backup that is a week old, but I know changes were made late last week that I would like to not have to do again.... Where is my backup of the changes I made? Well my SSD drive failed in my laptop and I dont think I have them... Can anyone provide advice as to what to do next? Also, what would have caused this all of the sudden? This box has been running fine for months.

HP Proliant ML150 : how do I access disks ?

Hi, Up until now, I've only installed Linux either on "desktop" hardware, meaning one of the desktop PCs in the LAN acted as a server machine for the network, or I rented some dedicated server somewhere in a datacenter. Last week I bought some server hardware, a used HP Proliant ML150. It's the first time I am dealing with this sort of hardware. The hardware was sold "as is", without any warranty. When I open the front cache, there are six small "drawers", and the bottom two of them each contain a 72 GB hard disk. I inserted a CentOS 5.4 install CD (1 of 6), and the installer (linux text) booted correctly. But when it comes to partitioning, it "sees" no disk. Unlike the usual desktop hardware, there seems to be a myriad of configuration options, and I'm a bit lost here. So first things first. How do I configure this machine so the CentOS installer can actually recognize my two inserted hard disks as such : say, sda and sdb or similarly ? Any suggestions ? Niki Kovacs

x86_64 package mess ?

Hi, I just installed CentOS 5.4 on a 64bit-server. It's the first time I work with this sort of hardware. Doing rpm -qa | sort | less shows that most of the packages seem to be installed twice: once for i386 architecture, and then again for x86_64. Is this normal? Or did I mess up something during install (thought I wouldn't know what)? Niki
