Repodata for 5.4 updates?

I'm seeing the updates for 5.4 roll out (per Karanbir's tweet on October 26), but there haven't been any updates to the repodata, thus, yum isn't seeing the updates. Is this on purpose? Maybe I've just not noticed this before, if this is standard update roll-out procedure. Thanks, Kevin

Hi! I'm using Virtualbox 3.08, have several other VMs in it, but cannot boot the Centos 5.4 (i386) DVD far enough to even reach Anaconda... I've tried all the various virtualbox and boot options I can think of and it always sticks in the same place: NetLabel: unlabeled traffic allowed by default NET: Registered protocol family 2 and there it hangs. I've left it for several minutes. I also tried the iso image of 5.3 that I still have. same thing. FWIW, Fedora 12 beta installs fine, no trouble at all. For building my local repo, how large is 5.4 update?

I have run a local repo for Centos updates for some time. I suppose, at this point I could just delete the 5.3 update directory and rsync the 5.4 directory... But how large is the 5.4 update directory? Oh, just for i386, without /debug and is there anything else I should not include? For example for my FC11 update repo I also exclude drpms.

on emacs startup no fonts, just little empty boxes

Just upgraded CentOS to (uname) "Linux 2.6.18-164.2.1.el5.plus #1 SMP Fri Oct 9 12:34:43 EDT 2009 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux" and since then, when emacs (version 21.4.1) starts up (using emacs -Q), where there should be text there are only little empty boxes, each the size of character. The error message reads: Warning: Cannot convert string "-*-courier-medium-r-*-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-*" to type FontStruct Warning: Cannot convert string "-*-helvetica-medium-r-*--*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1" to type FontStruct I've tried running "emacs --font <font-spec>" with different font specs, but all of them error'd out also. "fc-list" shows 156 fonts available... you'd think emacs would be able to grab one of them and be happy with it. What's emacs doing or trying to do? Hi, We had received a new EMC storage (Clariion CX4) and the EMC analist has told us that CentOS aren't on their support list, but RHEL are :) Well anybody on the list has a CentOS host talking (iSCSI) with an EMC storage, preferably using the EMC Powerpath software, and can talk about you experience? Or I will need to buy some REHL licenses ? I got a report that my CentOS 5.4 is used for sending spam. >From sendmail maillog I can see that apache has been sending a lot of email to suspicious addresses. Probably one of the many Apache virtual hosts I have is used for sending spam. But how to find out which one? Regards, Peter

Dear All Please be informed that I checked for the presence of internal modem on my CentOS server , as the followings : #dmesg |grep -i modem #lspci |grep -i modem #lshw |grep -i modem According to the output , it seems that my CentOS client does not contain internal modem . So I decided to add external USB modem and make use of an PCAnyWhere like application that enables for Remote PC Access . Can you please do me favor and let me know how can I add the external USB modem to my CentOS host and please propose for an PCAnyWhere like application that can be installed on my CentOS client and enables for remote dialup connection (as the PCAnyWhere does for the MS Windows clients) ? Madwifi drivers afeter 2.6.18-128.

I have a atheros wiifi card on my Centos 5 that I use as a access point using hostapd. I noticed that after the upgrade to kernel 2.6.18-128 or above, the atheros driver comes with the kernel, ath5k, and it does´t let hostpad ou iwconfig set master mode on the card. Up to kernel 2.6.18-92 is workedd just fine using madwifi from rpmforge. Any ideas on that? Tks. __________________________________________________

Need some help with logwatch.

I am trying to get a logwatch summary emailed to a central address from a cron job. The tasd was copied verbatim from a system which does this already. The second gets delivered to root(a)host2.harte-lyne.ca and not to support. It has been a considerable time since I dealt with logwatch on the first machine and I cannot remember is there was any special configuration of logwatch itself to enable this to happen. Does anyone know what I might be overlooking? 5.4 DVD

I admit I wasn't following the screaming and yelling about 5.4, so excuse me if this has been answered.... My boss tells me he wants me to start rolling out 5.4. I want to d/l & burn a DVD... but when I looked at a number of mirrors, the .iso is from 1 Oct, while the CD .iso's are from the 14th... yet 5.4 was officially announced the other day. Am I missing something, or do the mirrors have a pre-release DVD .iso, with no fixes in the last three weeks, or ...? mark

To All, Thanks to the CentOS guys for 5.4; sure appreciate your work. I have one question. I had to remove perl-5.8.8-18.el5_3.1.i386 on two x86_64 machines in order to get perl.x86_64 4:5.8.8-27.el5 to update. Does this represent a change from 5.3 to 5.4 and should I be concerned about the loss of perl-5.8.8-18.el5_3.1.i386. So far I have not found anything broken. Greg Ennis

Upgrading CentOS 5.3 from local mirror

Good afternoon folks. Earlier today, I started upgrading a few of our servers to 5.4 based on input from the list. So far, all has gone well. I have about 6 servers (not very many, but still) that need to be upgraded. Instead of taking precious bits from the mirrors for each upgrade, I was curious if I could rsync the 5.4 directory from a local mirror, and configure yum to use that repo, if it would upgrade without issues? Would I need anything other than the 5.4 folders to do the upgrade? -jonathan

mismatch_cnt after 5.3 -> 5.4 upgrade

Saturday I did an upgrade from 5.3 (original install) to 5.4. Saturday night, /etc/cron.weekly reported the following: /etc/cron.weekly/99-raid-check: WARNING: mismatch_cnt is not 0 on /dev/md0 md0 holds /boot and resides, mirrored, on sda1 and sdb1. md1 holds an LVM volume containing the remaining filesytems, including swap. The underlying hardware is just a few months hold, has passed the usual memtest stuff, and has been running 5.3 well for a few months. I'm *guessing* that due to the timing, this is related to the upgrade. I have to admit that I forgot myself and instead of doing the glibc updates as recommended, I only did: yum clean all yum update yum rpm -e --nodeps perl-5.8.8-18.el5_3.1.i386 (see today's perl thread) yum update perl.x86_64 yum update shutdown -r now I've taken a backup of /boot dump after the upgrade, but have not yet reenabled normal backups. My hunch is that something in the upgrade process touched sda1 but not sdb1, and that removing sdb1 from the mirror and reattaching it for resync would be sufficient, however I was looking for comments on this from anyone with experience or opinion on the matter. Googling the issue doesn't seem to turn up any recent related results. Also, could the upgrade have touched the bootblock on sda1 but not sdb1 and thus trigger this problem? Help! i want to clone my Centos machine to another box..

hi, i just let you know that xen not working properly in centos 5.4 there are upstream fix for this, but for those who use xen it's better to wait until centos release updates for 5.4 otherwise xen's domU won't start. -- Levente "Si vis pacem para bellum!"

weird mac address

Hi, I have an interesting problem. I have a centos server connected to our dmz zone. For security reasons our network department limited the number of mac addresses that can connect to the port on the switch. And since we are running vmware server on top on centos and a windows virtual machine inside of it, the number of mac addresses that can connect to this port is two or the switch blocks all traffic on this port. And now comes the problem. The port blocks almost immediately. After some investigation we found out, that we have actually 3 addresses communicating from this port. One that belongs to eth-0 and is ibm specific (the server is an IBM x3550 and every mac starts with the vendor code), one that belongs to the virtual machine and is Vmware specific and then we have another mac address that is IBM specific. I can't find where this traffic comes from. I traced the traffic with Wireshark and found, that this mac address creates a DHCP discover every 64 seconds. I first checked if this mac adress could be from the second network card, that is not connected with a cable nor is the device enabled, but it doesn't and the mystery mac is completely different from the network cards macs on the last 6 characters (the two on-board cards macs are different only on the last character). Then I tried searching the logs and /etc for any occurrence of this mac address, but I can't find anything. Then we tried to isolate the server, so I connected it directly to my laptop and run the trace again to see if this packet comes from outside and is then redirected back out on Vmware's virtual switch (since it's a broadcast packet, this could be somehow possible). But everything indicates that this packets are generated on this server. In the meantime we increased the number of mac addresses to 3, but after a while we got a packet from a fourth IBM mac address, that again doesn't belong anywhere. It was similar to the mystery mac (it was only different on the last two characters) and the switch blocked the port in the middle of the night. but this was a one-time occurrence for now. Does anyone have an idea what is happening or where i should look for the mystery mac address. thanx Janez

Hi, the topic is an excerpt of the 5.4 release notes and raises a question. I have a i386 server here, that has been running for nearly two years with xfs module from extras repo. When lookin at the module it was build against 2.6.18-92.1.13.el5. Question is, is it still safe to use this module with 5.4? Or should I switch back to a CentosPlus kmod and an older kernel? Rainer

Hey folks, I'm trying to compare my small company's policy against other companies out there. We pay 10% of your per-hour salary equivalent per every hour you carry it, whether it goes off or not. So for example someone making $55K/year works out to about $27 / hour (I think), so they'd get $2.70 for every hour they carry the pager outside of regular work hours. We are a company of about 25 people. CentOS DS Transition Issue

Alle, We are looking to transition from OpenLDAP to CentOS DS. We currently using OpenLDAP V2.3.43-3 with both RHEL 5.4 and Solaris10 clients (auth/netgroup/automount). We restrict user login access to the RHEL and Solaris machines using netgroups. After configuring the CentOS DS, we noticed that while the RHEL restrictions using the /etc/pam.d/system-auth-ac and /etc/security/access.conf configurations worked correctly, the Solaris clients using +@netgroup in /etc/passwd, passwd_compat in /etc/nsswitch.conf and the appropriate /etc/pam.conf configs do not respect the restrictions. The client configurations have not changed, only the LDAP server. I know this is a long shot, but has anyone else come across this issue? Best Regards, Camron -- Camron W. Switch to measure traffic at IP level?

Right now, I only get statstics at a port level, but that does not help since each of my servers run several virtual machines and I need to measure traffic per virtual machine. Alle, We're trying to install kvm on a newly update CentOS5.4 box. Which package should /usr/bin/qemu-img come from, kvm-qemu-img or qemu? Packages in 5.4 older than 5.3 updates, and no 5.4 updates available?

I've been checking the updates tree for 5.4 and notice that they're empty. I checked 4 or 5 different servers and got the same results. This is, in my experience, unusual; there's typically patches for the new release from day one. But it could be that the 5.4 DVD is up to date. So I checked one of my machines and what updates it would need against 5.3 vs those that it would need to update to 5.4 (I've not been keeping my patches up to date on this machine; I know... stupid me). My machine is 33 patches short when configuring yum to a 5.3 tree (base and updates; it'd take 202 patches to take it up to 5.4). Of those 33 patches, 19 are the same from the 5.4 DVD. Of the remaining 14 discrepencies 10 had newer versions on the 5.4 disk. So far, so good. Hello everyone, Now after the recent discussion on running SSH on a different port, I decided to start a new thread but with SELinux involved. Assuming that you have SELinux enabled, and that you changed the default port for SSHD, let say for 1234, when I restart SSHD I don't get any AVC denials. This is the output of: semanage -l port | grep ssh ssh_port_t tcp 22 I thought (based on previous SELinux readings) that in order to allow SSHD on a non-default port you needed to: semanage port -a -t ssh_port_t -p tcp 1234 That was the theory I read :) Now in practice it seems it is not implemented yet, or at least by the time RHEL5 came out. I noticed that when I went over to CentOS-5.4 on my server (and re-booted), my openvpn connections failed for a couple of hours, and then came back. Has anyone noticed this? kvm package difference - v36 via yum, v83 via DVD

Hi! As far as I can see there is no kvm in the base repository but the older version 36 in CentOS-Extras. Version 83 that belongs to 5.4 is only found on the install DVD and CD-Set. So it's different when installing kvm later with yum which results in kvm-36 than choosing 'Virtualization' on DVD install that installs kvm-83. It's also a difference between installing from network and DVD, even when the same Kickstart file is used when kvm is selected. What is the reason of the base-repo/media difference? cheers, Brian.

Hi, I tried to convert my working 5.3 USB bootable key to 5.4 and I apparently cannot get syslinux to find/read its configuration file anymore... I followed the same process as before: mkfs.vfat -n BOOT /dev/sdg1 syslinux -s /dev/sdg1 cd /media/BOOT cp -rv /mnt/cdrom/isolinux syslinux mv syslinux/isolinux.cfg syslinux/syslinux.cfg rm -f syslinux/isolinux.bin vi syslinux/syslinux.cfg dd if=/usr/lib/syslinux/mbr.bin of=/dev/sdg I get: syslinux: cannot find kernel linux I tried to copy syslinux.cfg in /, but it still fails... CentOS-5.4 Update?

hdwr HPQ DC7700S ix86 Core Duo I have just updated this CentOS-5.3 box to 5.4. This process was not satisfactory. While the update packages all downloaded without problem the update process itself stalled at several points. By stalled I mean that at some point the entire process stopped for hours. The packages at which it stalled included evince, evolution, totem and vinfo. There may have been others but these I seem to recall. Restarting the update process required that the existing update be interrupted with a <ctrl>C and yum-complete-transaction run. It took five iterations to get through to completion and in the end I first installed all the remaining packages one at a time directly from the command line using yum install packagename and then ran yum-complete-transaction until all outstanding transactions were cleaned up. Now, while the system boots I have no gnome desktops for any of the users on this host. When root logs in all that is shown is a deep blue background and a wirefram outline of the Firefox web browser, a wire frame outline of an xterm window and an analogue clock. Left clicking on teh background displays a popup menu labeled "Tvm". The mouse and keyboard work and when one clicks on the wireframs then immediately fill with the application background, the CentOS welcome back for FireFox and a black on white scheme for xterm. All the windows have teal menu bars. Further, it seems that I cannot switch between windows. If I try to enter a command in the xterm window then what I type appears in this compose window for squirrelmail. I would like to get my previous customised desktops back, but first I would like to get the default to display. Are there any ideas on how to proceed? Problems with BCM5709 network

I've just installed CentOS 5.4 on an IBM server with a BCM5709 network adapter, and can't get networking to work. It looks like an appropriate driver (bnx2) is installed, lspci and the system log return sensible info on the unit, there are no specific error message anywhere, but I get "no link present" when I try to activate the device. In other words, I see essentially the same behaviour as when the network cable is missing, but I've tried several cables, connection points etc. and also get the appropriate indicator lamps etc. so I'm quite sure the connection is good. Does anyone have any idea what may be wrong? If not, have any of you lot got networking to work with a similar setup? Some extracts from the system log are included below... upgrade to 5.4 openswan broke

Hi All, I upgraded from 5.3 to 5.4 today on a vpn gateway using openswan. After the upgrade the vpn stopped working. From what I could tell the new version of openswan uses NSS. I tried following the instructions in this thead https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=508107 without success. # certutil -N -d sql:/etc/ipsec.d certutil: function failed: security library: bad database. If I ran the command without the sql: like this # certutil -N -d sql:/etc/ipsec.d it would create the database files. I would then execute # modutil -fips true -dbdir /etc/ipsec.d followed by # /usr/sbin/ipsec newhostkey --configdir /etc/ipsec.d/nssdb --password password1 --output /etc/ipsec.d/host.secrets After replacing the hostkey in the file I tried to bring the connection up but the connection would not start and the following error message was in the log file. unable to locate my private key for RSA Signature sending notification AUTHENTICATION_FAILED I finally had to downgrade from openswan-2.6.21-5.el5 to openswan-2.6.14-1.el5 to get things to work. Am I missing something that is needed to make this work? Any help would be appreciated. Myron Williams

Persistent desktop icons ?

Hi, Is it possible to configure persistent desktop icons, e. g. shortcuts that users can't delete ? On most of my client desktops, I have some home-made shortcuts, like here for example : http://www.microlinux.fr/configurations.html The shortcut on the lower left corner of the screen launches the public library management system. Most of the users are quite computer-illiterate, and more often than not, they tend to erase these shortcuts (and then call me panic-stricken at 07:00 in the morning :oD). To configure the shortcuts themselves, I just edit a .desktop file by hand. I tried various combinations of chown and chmod, but to no avail. Even if there are minimum access rights, the thing can still be erased with a right click. Now I vaguely remember that a standard openSUSE install has something like persistent desktop shortcuts (for the SUSE help center or something like that), and I wonder: how do they do it ? Any suggestions ? Niki

Hi: I'm running into a dependency problem when I try to install the php-pgsql package on CentOS 5.4 64bit. I have php 5.2.9 and when I try to do a yum install php-pgsql I get the following dep errors: Resolving Dependencies --> Running transaction check ---> Package php-pgsql.x86_64 0:5.1.6-23.2.el5_3 set to be updated --> Processing Dependency: php-common = 5.1.6-23.2.el5_3 for package: php-pgsql --> Finished Dependency Resolution php-pgsql-5.1.6-23.2.el5_3.x86_64 from base has depsolving problems --> Missing Dependency: php-common = 5.1.6-23.2.el5_3 is needed by package php-pgsql-5.1.6-23.2.el5_3.x86_64 (base) Error: Missing Dependency: php-common = 5.1.6-23.2.el5_3 is needed by package php-pgsql-5.1.6-23.2.el5_3.x86_64 (base) Any ideas? 5.4 docs

First off, I'm glad that 5.4 is now available, and a big "Thank you" to the development team for all of their hard work. I have noticed that the docs for 5.4 appear to be accessible on the CentOS Web site, but some of them seem to have some issues. In the "Technical Notes", everything after the first page of Chapter 1 gives a 404 error. I've tried to send in a report with the contact form on the Web site, but so far this situation has not changed. LDAP server, too many open files

I've setup an LDAP server with a slave server on Centos 5.3 X86_64, replication works, most of the time client logins work fine but I'm starting to get a error I can't seem to eliminate, it's starting New administrator and upgrading systems

Hi there folks. I've been watching the never ending "CentOS 5.4 OMG WHEN?" threads for the last few days / weeks and had a question. I'm pretty new to anything rpm based. I used Red Hat 9 back in college, but that's about it. Currently, I do have a few Cent OS servers and we're slowly migrating from Debian to CentOS for various reasons. Since 5.3 - 5.4 is going to be my first major upgrade, I had a simple question. WHEN it's actually released, and things are going normal, should I just continue doing "yum upgrade" as always and will eventually be on 5.4? I seem to recall something with Fedora where you had to install some kind of release package, etc (again.. this was back in 2003 - 2004 time) and was just curious. Simple google searches tell me "yes! just yum upgrade" but I wanted input from you guys, if you don't mind. Thanks, Jonathan

Upgrade to 5.4 with an existing XFS-filesystem

Hi! I've got a fileserver currently running under 5.3 with the /home-partition being an XFS-filesystem. I use the kmod-xfs from extras. It works great ;) Now: as I understand it from the release-notes the 5.4 kernel has XFS already built-in. Right? Or is it just a kmod-package ("technology preview") Now my question is: are there any recommendations for an upgrade-procedure? Hi all, I have a local user account call "panel" on a machine. When I use the mail command to manually send email to the panel account it over 1 minute until that mail actually deposited in the mail account. What setting is that reduces this time? I changed /etc/sysconfig/sendmail the QUEUE=10s and that did not have any effect. Thanks Jerry

EDAC Kernel Panic 2.6.9-78 and above

I've got a production system running CentOS 4 that was rock solid until I upgraded from 2.6.9-55 to 2.6.9-78.0.13 (now running 2.6.9-89.0.11). The system now crashes intermittently after a few weeks. I finally caught the panic message : EDAC MC0: INTERNAL ERROR: channel-b out of range (4 >= 4) Kernel panic - not syncing: MC0: Uncorrected Error Looking at the kernel changelog, I see that EDAC support was added for the Intel 5000 chipset in 2.6.9-68.20.EL which this server runs. I'm trying to determine if this is a potential memory issue, or is this related to some other hardware item. Also considering disabling EDAC in the kernel (is "noedac" a valid option?) as a last resort. I will run memtest86+ on the server as soon as possible to check the memory, just formulating my game plan if it's something else. Thoughts? Chris

Low End NAS hardware.

Hey, The recent discussion on NAS/SAN and the Thecus N8800 got me to thinking. Bit of background. I have an old Dual Athlon MP2800+ that I'm using for a home web/file server. It runs fine but between the noise of the various fans and it's location in the living room, I've been asked by my spouse to find a replacement for it that's smaller & quieter. Looking at the Thecus, and based on experience with Atom based Mini-ITX systems at work, I was thinking about rolling my own. My questions is, for a small home server that runs apache/php/mysql and Samba, how well do the Mini-ITX boards like the VIA C3/7 & Intel Atoms handle this sort of task? I've used VIA systems as MythTV frontends but never as file/web servers. I'd expect they'd do fine for home use but I've never tried. Thanks, -- Drew "Nothing in life is to be feared. I'm trying to setup a server with 4x500GB HDD's, setup in RAID 10 to act as an iSCSI server for a virtualization project, but I can't find a decent howto on how to setup an iSCSI server using CentOS. Hi Everyone I am looking at setting up a File Server that uses ISCSI storage. It is the first time I have done this, so I am wanting to get peoples thoughts on whether for CentOS systems you should use Hardware based ISCSI HBA's? If so do I need to be careful about what HBA I use ? Currently I am looking at purchasing a Dell System using Broadcom ethernet cards/ ISCSI HBA. Hello: I am looking for a recommendation for a PCI-e RAID card for my server. The server has a PCI-e x16 low profile slot so the card has to be at most 6.6 inches long x 2.536 inches high. I would like to use RAID 5 with 3 drives so I have to have those capabilities. It has to be CentOS 5.4 compatible (Of course!). CentOS-5.3 saslauth configuration issue

I am trying to get cyrus-imapd and saslauthd running together so that I can get squirrelmail to work. I have accomplished this on several other servers and have relatively complete documentation on how to do this. What I am running into in this case has me baffled. If I start saslauthd as a service: # service saslauthd start And I try testsaslauthd -u cyrus -p test Then I see this: 0: NO "authentication failed" and in the syslog I see this:: saslauthd[5995]: do_auth : auth failure: [user=cyrus] [service=imap] [realm=] [mech=pam] [reason=PAM auth error] However, if I stop the system service: # service saslauthd stop and I run the saslauthd daemon from the tty with debug on: # saslauthd -a shadow -d -n 6 then when I try # testsaslauthd -u cyrus -p test I see 0: OK "Success." 'Extremely lazy' disk flush?

Are there any good options to configure a filesystem so most activity takes place in the RAM buffer with the flush to physical media allowed to lag very far behind? OpenNMS does some data collection that keeps the disk very busy. I don't want to lose the history completely in a crash like you would with a ramdisk, but it wouldn't be a big problem if only the last 10-30 minutes would be dropped. -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell(a)gmail.com

Console priority

Hi all, A while back I vaguely remember someone posting a link to documentation on how to prioritise console access (for want of a better expression). For the life of me I can't find it in the archives or via Google; Can anyone provide a URL? Basically, I have a remote server that thrashes (that's my theory at least) occasionally, resulting in the service (httpd/mysql) failing. When its in this state logging on to the console (serial + screen) responds with "login timeout". The only way back from this at the moment is a reboot.. If I can prioritize console access somehow and get on to the server I may find a clue as to what's causing it. Cheers Dan

Rescan for new geometry without reboot?

Hello, We just had our servers fitted with more disks. Most of the disks are growing existing RAID 1+0 channels, some are in new channels. Controllers and disks support live installation. I'd like to avoid a reboot just to let the system find that the disks are larger. All I can find so far suggests that its possible to rescan the disks, and even find the new geometry (e.g. http://linux.derkeiler.com/Mailing-Lists/Kernel/2004-12/1555.html) but nobody knows how to actually convince the system to let me use the extra space without a reboot. Does anyone know of a way to achieve this? Thanks, --Amos

Hi list, I run quite a few centos 5.3 servers and have a local yum repository which is working fine. Below a list of what I'm rsyncing at the moment + an extract from my / etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Base.repo file I copied the OS directory from the install media and ran createrepo on that dir. I would like to upgrade my servers to 5.4. I was wondering if I could simply replace the '5.3' part in the rsync source to '5.4' ? Or is there more to it? Hi all, Does anybody know of an editor that can do on Linux what Acrobat / Acrobat Pro can do on Mac/Windows? I have tried to use the PDF Import extension to the Open Office which appears barely functional - at least it is so slow as to be almost impractical. I have also tried pdfedit under Linux which seems to work fine but seems to have rather limited functionality. For instance, the capability to make bookmarks or to search through the whole document (as opposed to the current page) seems to be missing there. Any tips much appreciated. Cheers, Boris.

RH Server/Client disk sets -> Centos; how?

I'm running Centos on 12 machines. Colleague runs Redhat Enterprise Linux and while studying his system, I see some gibberish/complication about his system being a "Client" install, not a "Server" install. Apparently, RH provides completely different disk sets for Server and Client installs. I've gone to the RH website and read about the difference between Client and Server, but I still don't understand why they make 2 different disks. In the "old days" of RH, there would be 1 set of disks, and when the install began, you would choose "server" or "workstation" as a way of choosing a default set of packages, and then you could freely pick and choose additional things. You could install gnome on a server, or an http server on a client. Centos seems to follow the good old RH packaging approach. This RHEL Client/Server thing actually causes some wrinkles if you try to transition a running system from RH to Centos, because the repository names are different. RH will have a version name like "5client" whereas Centos will just have 5. I understand this Centos list is not quite the right place to ask "why does RedHat do that?", but I bet some of you will know. What I really want to ask here is: what is the relationship between the several RHEL install types and the Centos disks? Created a DVD from Gnome Desktop -CentOS-5.3

I am trying to put the dvd iso image of CentOS-5.4 onto a DVD. I have an LG multi-writer installed. I have used this device on this host to created CDs in the past but this is my first attempt at creating a dvd. When I put a blank DVD-R media in the drive then I see a desktop icon for "CD-ROM Disc" created. When I open the bittorent folder and click on the iso image "CentOS-5.4-x86_64-bin-DVD.iso" then I am prompted to open the image with "CD/DVD Creator". When I do this then I get a new window opened with the image file in the lower portion and an entry at the top labelled: CD/DVS Creator Folder and a button labled "Write to Disc" When I click on write to disc I am prompted to either create from image or create from file. I select image and am propted for the speed. I select maximum possible (the default) and press the write button. I get this error: Insert a rewritable or blank disc Please put a disc, with at least 4.3 GiB free, into the drive. The following disc types are supported: DVD+R DL, DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW I get the same thing if I use a DVD-RAM. What is going on? Hey folks, I don't seem to be able to get a response from the openfiler forums (and they want 40 quid for the fine manual!), and since there has been a lot of chat about it here lately, I figured I'd ask here. So I could be using the wrong terms (anyone got a good primer to recommend?) It seems straightforward that I can install openfiler to server iSCSI disks out over the network. And it seems obvious to me that I'd want a dedicated network for doing that. That part is easy. But based on some poking around on the openfiler site and in the forums, it looks to me like it might be possible to stick a fiber channel card into an openfiler system, and serve fiberchannel out to other systems? Is that right? Is anyone here doing this? centos5.4 and freenx - using my home dir and settings

Hello all, I am setting up freenx on a machine and I am able to connect to it remotely. However, when I connect and start xfce it does not appear to use the correct settings. It acts like it is a whole different user. It is starting the desktop environment as the nx user rather than myself. Is there any way to have the NX server connect as myself rather than having a whole separate virtual environment? I know you can't connect to an existing X session that wasn't started with FreeNX, but I want to be able to start a session using my settings and have access to my home dir, etc. Thanks, Ryan

VMware Server 2.0.1 and Centos 5.4

Upgrade to RHEL 5.4's glibc has rendered vmware-hostd inoperable in some systems. I don't know if Centos 5.4 has the same conflict between glibc and VMware Server as RHEL (no reason it shouldn't). If you run VMware Server 2.0.1 make a copy of /lib64/libc-2.5.so (or /lib/libc- 2.5.so) before upgrading to 5.4. Monitoring a remote server with Conky ?

Hi, I've been using Conky for some time, a nifty utility to monitor just about anything on the PC. Vital things like CPU, RAM, swap, disks, current song playing in MPD :o) Here's what it looks like : http://www.microlinux.fr/images/bureau_conky.png And with more detail : http://www.microlinux.fr/images/conky_zoom.png Now I wonder... I'd really like to use that to monitor my remote server. I know this feature isn't officially supported by Conky, but I'm right now thinking about a workaround. Something like: OK, my server is 'headless' (e. g.: no graphical server, nothing), but why not install just xorg-x11-server-Xorg, then use Conky and forward it to my local display with SSH -X ? I'm pondering this question, thinking about the possible issues... ... so maybe one of you guys here has come up with some solution ? Cheers, Niki

Hello all: I am trying to follow the RHEL virtualization guide. According to Chapter 17, I have a processor without a constant Time Stamp Counter (Its an Opteron). According to that guide, I need to set the MIN_SPEED and MAX_SPEED variables in /etc/sysconfig/cpuspeed to the highest frequency show in /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu*/cpufreq/scaling_available_frequencies I took a look at my system (CentOS 5.4) and there are no cpufreq directories in the cpu folders. Is that a problem? Hi, is there any way to sum and limit quotas for one user across multiple filesystems? E.g. I'd like to use different mountpoints on a mailserver for /var/mail and /home but the user should have only a total of 1GB. or on a samba server the windows profile files should be on an other filesystem as other files for that user. RAID advice? and KVM advice?

Hello All, In the not too distant future I will be commissioning a new CentOS (5.4?) box with 4 identical SATA drives. I'd like to set them up as RAID 1+0 for speed and redundancy. I've read the RHEL 5 deployment guide on raid setup and it seems to cover the basics of software raid pretty well, but doesn't cover 1+0. Does anyone have a reference for that kind of configuration? I'd also like to have two virtual domains, one for CentOS and one for Debian. any suggestions for setup docs for that kind of arrangement? TIA. Thanks to those who responded. The use of Apache's reverse proxy was something I would never have though of (it's the mind-numbing cold medication I'm on, LOL) However, I did manage to get things rolling thru the tunnel by configuring strong-end routing at the remote server. Requests were indeed arriving at the remote, but because the request's origin IP address was that of the outside user's browser, the remote server was simply trying to return responses via its default route, which is not the tunnel. I *have* to ask ... why is strong-end routing not the default behavior in Linux? Anyway ... Adding 'ip route ....' and 'ip rule ....' commands when establishing the tunnel did the trick. There may be redundant commands in all of this, but at least it works flawlessly for me. I didn't use any SNAT statements on the rash assumption POSTROUTING does the same thing.
