As for the live image there's a couple of things that would need to be figured out, (1) does the live image already support iscsi out of the box and (2) does it already support httpfs out of the box. If the live image doesn't already support booting off of an iscsi target than adding it should be trivial, if it doesn't than we'll have to hack into the initrd and add it. It's not a *huge* change but it means the following to the initrd: adding: - networking into the initrd - iscsid - iscsiadm - lib files for dns resolution and then it's just a few small adjustments to the init script so that it brings up the iscsi interface, and puts the image in the right place before letting it plow forward as normal. Probably the most useful, to us, is if the kernel + initrd were separate like they are for the normal pxe installs but that's not a requirement by any stretch. I suppose the question ultimately becomes, is this something the CentOS project is interested in generally providing or are we looking at specific support for BKO? gpg command works fine from login shell, not from cron script

I have an odd situation here, maybe one of you can help. We have a script that runs via a cron job. It's purpose is to decrypt PGP-encrypted files in a certain directory. I have tried the command two different ways, both fail with the same error message: gpg --decrypt $file > ${file%.txt}.decrypted.txt gpg --output ${file%.txt}.decrypted.txt --decrypt $file (Don't even ask about the name substitution. The end-user insists they MUST submit files with a .txt extension, and not .pgp or .gpg) Anyway, I can run the script fine from a login shell. It works beautifully. But when it runs from a cron job two things happen: 1. A file of zero size is created called file.decrypted.txt 2. The error message in the cron email I get says: gpg: encrypted with ELG-E key, ID XXXXXXXX gpg: decryption failed: secret key not available Why does it say "secret key not available"? The output of gpg -K shows that the key is in fact available, and this is further confirmed when I run the script manually and the files are decrypted just fine.

apache env vars - best practices

I've been setting custom env vars for Apache 1 of 2 ways; 1 - Changing the passwd file so Apache has a shell and loading a custom .bashrc file. 2 - Using the SetEnv directive in my httpd.conf file. I'm crazy about neither one as they both have limitations; 1 - I don't like giving Apache its own shell. 2 - The SetEnv directive only takes 2 args so if I have a var with multiple values like a path, it won't work. What's the cleanest way to set complex env vars for Apache?

Still Confused about Firewalling

Hi All, Sorry, I am still confused about implementing a firewall without having my ISP static route all of my traffic to my public IP's to a single public IP. So before when I have done this for work all traffic has been statically routed. Now I have a comcast modem and it is 'pass through' so traffic for all my 13 IP's is allowed and I have to decide what to do. So I am looking at Vyatta or UnTangle. I have a machine with 3 NIC'e in it. I think one would be In, DMZ and last private. What happens? I have one cable from my comcast gateway to my firewalls NIC, but how does it answer for all IP's that I have so i can evaluate the request incoming to a rule set and decide if allowed or denied? I am missing something fundamental! Can anyone help this click in my head? Without statically routing my traffic I dont get it. Say a request comes to my webserver 172.13.167.xxx on port 80, but my firewall's IP for the card is 172.13.167.zzz how does it answer for 172.13.167.xxx? -Jason

Postfix, Milters and SELinux

Hi folks, I want to run Postfix with external milter application on a CentOS 5.3 mailgateway. At the moment SELinux is preventing postfix' cleanup daemon from accessing sockets. Before I to through the process of audit2allow trial and error - has anybody out there successfully gone though this and can send me a policy I can work with? Any hint or help is appreciated. Dirk

so far: - not a yum bug - not a configuration issue - other persons could reproduce this behaviour even under RHEL right? so this backport is actually broken or let's say the guy who did this, improved encryptFS-utils that much, it uses now X11 libraries even if it actually has no GUI... still right? ok, so now what is the next step? Backing up a centos serveR? how to ? Newbie question..

Hi all, excuse my newbie question but how can i backup my centos server? i have a dozzen of virtual hosts over it as well as substantial database entries.. i've backed up the following directories using rsync: workspace/ /etc/httpd/ /etc/apache-tomcat-6.0.20/ /usr/lib/mysql/ /var/lib/mysql though i'm still not at ease with this, so i decided to do a some sort of clone or something to move this server to a VMWARE which i will turn on when needed (if main server failed) any advice on how to do so ? i've looked around and tried using "clonezilla" though that didn't work with me, i guess i mustve done something wrong... each time i try to boot from the cloned image of the local disk (which in turn cloned to the VM's local disk) it gives an error bout root records... so any other way ? any sort of help is greatly appreciated :) thanks and best regards, Roland _________________________________________________________________ Keep your friends updated—even when you’re not signed in. http://www.microsoft.com/middleeast/windows/windowslive/see-it-in-action/so…

I imagine the following scenario: someone walks into my office building with a laptop (a colleague, a visitor, a guest, whoever), and hooks up onto the local net (wired or wireless). The server detects an unknown MAC address, issues a bogus dhcp lease which resolves all dns queries to a single internal web page with a form the user is supposed to fill in and send. After he does so, an administrator does a sanity check of the data the user provided, and grants or denies access. If access is granted, the user gets a new, unrestricted dhcp lease, which provides him with a normal access to local network. The goal is to have a database which relates IP or MAC addresses to people names, so I can track a person down efficiently if he brings an infected/spamming machine into the building. at the risk of picking at that scab a bit longer, i'm going to toss out a comment regarding people still waiting for the public availability of centos 5.4. here: http://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos/2009-October/083743.html we read: "The last status (from twitter) is 2 days old with the '5.4 is baked! centos internal network will start syncing up today. Release ~ soon!'. Any ETA?" followed by the response: "Just relax and wait, this is a _volunteer_ based project. Want a release date? Go pay for RHEL." not to put too find a point on it, but that reply is more than a bit dickish. it doesn't *matter* if it's a volunteer project. as i see this, this is turning into an issue of credibility. once someone posts that the 5.4 release is allegedly "baked" and syncing is beginning, then it's not unreasonable that people will start getting anxious to see it hit the mirrors. and as the days go by, it's not unreasonable for those people to start wondering what the heck is going on. again, whether people are being paid to do any of this work is not relevant. it's important, from the perspective of reputation, that everyone see the centos project as being efficiently and competently run, and making what *appears* to be an announcement of completion and the beginning of syncing servers, followed by days of awkward silence and increasingly defensive rhetoric, is not the way to do it. it just looks bad. rday -- ======================================================================== Robert P. trying to understand OSS, GPL, BSD & other licensing model for software distribution.

Hi all, We are busy developing some software (some is web based, others not) and I am having a bit of hard time understanding (or rather, choosing) a license model to work with, We will offer some free software (PHP based scripts, and even Windows based applications) and for this I'm sure the GPL, or even LGPL (for the network side?) will work fine. But, we also need to suppose these scripts, and will be charging for support (other for installations, customization, or even custom derivations, etc), but at the same time we need to distribute some commercial software to cover developer's salaries, rents, marketing, business growth, etc. Now, my question(s) is as follows: Can I sell one script as GPL, but another as AGPL, or even BSD under the same company name? And if these 2 are tied together (i.e. being able to be used together, although seperate programs / script - for example Apache + PHP), how would I license them? We are writing a series of PHP + MySQL based scripts which can be used on the internet, either stand-alone, or in conjunction with other scripts (API driven), and I want to offer a free, limited edition, as well as commercial edition with more features. We're also writing some software that makes use of MySQL / sqlite / postgresql, and even MSSQL, so I need to take their licenses into consideration. What would be the best license for this? I know it's broad, but there's just too much to readup on the different licences and I've read a lot already, not knowing where to go. I have a feeling that I may need to go the dual / multi-license route, but even then I don't know which licences to use. The open source projects wouls also be open for other people to add their own modifications, but I would also like to allow others to write commercial addon's as well. I am running CentOS 5.3 and have just the two accounts "root" and "buz". I would like to be able to issue "shutdown" from the account "buz", and thus created /etc/shutdown.allow with the single entry "buz" (without any quotes). I still get the error message "only root can do this" (or something similar) even if I include the '-a' option on the shutdown command. What am I missing ?

Confusion about scheduling tasks with crontab

Hi, I have to setup a scheduled task on a server, and I just read through some crontab docs. Now I'm confused. It's not so much the syntax of the cron job to define (I got that), it's more... how do I get to define it? Use a text editor (vi or the likes) to edit /etc/crontab directly? Or create some empty file in /etc/cron.daily or /etc/cron.hourly or the likes and then edit it using crontab -e ? Anyway, here's what I'd like to do. I have a script: /root/scripts/backup.sh I want to run that script every day at 07:00 in the morning. Once. Now how would I go about that? The thing is: I'd like to know an orthodox way to go about this. You can be laconic in your answers, I'll retrive the details in the docs. Cheers, Niki

iptables - Forwarding with port translation thru an OpenVPN tunnel

Perhaps someone with a sharper brain than I can solve this little mystery. I've Googled until I'm blue in the face, read all TFM's I can find, and tried several iptables rule combinations but just can't get the following to work. Here's my challenge: I have a CentOS-5.3 "main" server with a static public IP address running Apache, OpenVPN, and a bunch of other services. The primary IP address for the only NIC in this box is used by Apache on standard ports 80 and 443. I have a secondary static public IP address assigned to this same NIC as eth0:1 I have a working OpenVPN tunnel going to another CentOS-5.3 server which has Apache listening on its eth0 NIC for requests on non-standard ports 29080 and 29443(don't ask!). This server is accessible on its static public IP address and thru OpenVPN tunnel from the main server. The main server is the OpenVPN server as well, with private IP address 172.16.xxx.1/32 auto-assigned to it. The second server is a VPN client with IP address 172.16.xxx.yyy/32 assigned. The narrow netmasks are the OpenVPN default, presumably used for isolation among multiple clients. OpenVPN is configured to run over the main server's NIC via its eth0:1 secondary IP address 64.aaa.bbb.ccc The main server has a static route set up between its eth0:1 IP and the remote server's public IP address (not the tunnel IP). This route is only there so that during initial VPN negotiations the data will move via eth0:1's IP address. Things like ping, SSH, scp and HTTP/HTTPS all work correctly thru the VPN in both directions, so the VPN itself is solid. Ok, so now I want external HTTP/HTTPS requests made to the main server's eth0:1 public IP address to be forwarded thru the VPN to the second remote server, with port translation along the way. Here is what I want to happen: Outside world HTTP/HTTPS requests to eth0:1 ports 80/443 | V CentOS eth0:1 (64.aaa.bbb.ccc) | V Translate to ports 29080/29443 | V Forward requests thru the tunnel to 172.16.xxx.yyy | V Remote Apache responds, packets return thru VPN to "main" | V Response goes back to the outside world via 64.aaa.bbb.ccc HTTP/HTTPS requests to the 64.aaa.bbb.ccc public IP just hang and time out. Direct requests to the remote server on the non-standard ports work fine. I've tried lots of iptables example entries found on several forums but so far none of them seem to work. Does anyone have a cookbook-like complete set of iptables rules that will accomplish what I need? Is it possible I need to set up strong-end routing on the remote server to send the response packets back thru the VPN? (such a pain to configure) Any assistance will be most gratefully received! For the CentOS team : The openais Nightmare. And some questions.

Hello guys, I have some questions about how the CentOS choose and rebuild RH RPMS. First here is my w-e nightmare : I have a 4 nodes Xen cluster using GFS2 (on SAN) and the Cluster Suite. Everything is from the CentOS repo. I am not updating these computers very often. I am always waiting several weeks to install updates just to be sure that everything is fine for others. This w-e I installed the lastest updates on these machines. Some were cluster related : cman, rgmanager and gfs2_tools. These updates are in the CentOS updates repo for 1 month now. After the reboot the cluster died. After hours of troubleshooting I found this thread on the Linux cluster mailing list : http://bit.ly/3HxVLu It said that CentOS is missing the openais update and without it the cluster is broken. The solution is to downgrade the RPMS installed. This fix the probe for now. Why the other RPM did not complain during the installation ? No idea. But what is interesting is that the threat 1 month old. And today the openais RPM is still missing from CentOS repo. It means that at the moment you cannot install a cluster using CentOS. Now my questions : Why after 1 month the update is still missing ? Without it : no cluster at all. As I am writing this email you cannot built a Cluster using CentOS. Is the RPMS for openais was hidden by RH ? No We can find it on the RH FTP. And after looking in other threat I found that Mr K Singh built it on 16-Sep-2009. So why can't I find it on the update. Once again I'd like to remind you that without it you cannot build a CentOS Cluster. I do not blame CentOS team. They are making a great job. Without them my company would not have a cluster. We cannot afford to pay 20k $ each year to RH for that. The team is making an amazing job and I do not care if I wait 1 or 2 months more for 5.4. And I really really respect Mr Singh. This email is not directed to him at all it is just that he is the one that kindly built the openais update and share it on his centOS page. But the question remains : why is this update is not on the repo ? And are they others ? Tx for answering me and have a good week-end. it is Sunday 6PM and mine finally starts ;-)

installing working skype possible???

I easily installed and used skype on my previous linux distro on this same machine, but am having problems getting it to work on my relatively new centos 5.3. I downloaded three versions of skype from their website: the two fedora rpms wouldn't install, their error messages complaining that it needed another package, a package which was already installed. (I figured it had to be looking for that package in the wrong place... something I couldn't do anything about.) So I downloaded the suse 10+ rpm and it installed just fine. But when I ran it (/usr/bin/skype), it errored out also, saying "/usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.9' not found (required by /usr/bin/skype)". So I used yum to search for any glibc which remotely corresponded to that glibc and got nothing. So is anybody running skype on 5.3? If so, how did you install it and get it to work? Is AMD rev F the same thing as socket F?

Hello: I am looking at the RHEL 5.4 virtualization guide. According to Chapter 17, if I want to use KVM on my machine, I need to check if it has the constant Time Stamp Counter by running this: cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep constant_tsc When I do that on the server (Currently running CentOS 5.3), I do not get any output. According to the output, that means my system does not have the counter. It then gives me instructions for AMD revision F CPUs. I did a search and did not find anything that seems relevant to revision F. The only stuff I am finding is talking about socket F. Is that the same things as a Socket F CPU or something different? Totem needs plug-ins

Just tried to play a movie/DVD and Totem (what automatically popped up when I inserted the DVD) said it needed plug-ins... it didn't say which plug-ins. Samba/BackupPC under CentOS-5.3

I'm almost completely ignorant about samba on Windows machines, In particular I know nothing about Windows permissions, if that is relevant here. I am running BackupPC on a CentOS-5.3 machine. It works perfectly for backing up Linux folders, but I have great difficulty extending it to Windows clients. To be precise, I have a share called "EA Games D" on a machine running Windows XP Pro. Does anyone have any recommendations for the best way to bring up a iSCSI Target on a C5.3+ server ? Various blogs suggest compiling IET from source, but thats not real appealing to me (not that I can't do it, I just don't want to have to support it long term). I looked in rpmforge but didn't see anything.

Dear All, If someone asks a question such as "When is Centos 5.4 coming out" bare in mind that it may be because they genuinely want to know when it's coming out, and feel that somehow, they have not been privy to that information. To me, I see CentOS as a polished professional product given what it is, a repackaging of RHEL, and to that end I have the expectation of a fully fledged professional product, which includes static release dates. (I know it's not always possible, so please, no flames) I say this with love, and all the maturity that goes with it, "I can't WAIT for CentOS 5.4!!!" but at least I have the luxury of understanding the process which prevents 5.4 from coming out on a particular day. The owners of 600 or so servers out there which I look after, like to believe they are techie people, because they can use Google, and they can read a few articles that say Centos 5.4 on the way. I get very regular emails asking why there server is still on centos 5.2, and I have to explain, if it's not broke, I'm not fixing it! On TV, when you watch a commercial that tells you of the latest blockbuster movie - there is a date attached. The next butt kicking FPS for Xbox 360... has a release date. So many products that have a "limited" life span (iPods, games consoles, mobile phones, books, songs) are planned with a "static" release date, and if that date is missed, bad press is almost a guarantee! The point I'm making, is that people have become used to knowing when things will happen. (I believe this is illustrated in the number of people fascinated with Flash Forward! Google is your friend). So, give them a break - and the idiots that insult other people who obviously do not understand how things work need to instead take the time, and understand that the internet is no longer the domain/hangout of the technically savvy. Even Linux is no longer the realm of only the technical geniuses, (although there are a lot of us!) When someone asked "When will *CentOS 5.4 come out??* The answer is, "When it is good and ready", and when they ask "Why/What does that mean?", ask them to Google "open source distribution release cycle". Hello, I'm trying to do an unattended CentOS 5.3 install. For the most part it's working. As of right now i'm statically assigning the machine an IP which i believe will allow %post to resolve names? I also like knowing where the box will show up. I am however having a few issues and I'm probably thinking to complicated on them. My first one is the fact that updates aren't working from %post. Under the assumption name resolution is working, see above with the static configuration, the issue is then most likely importing of gpg keys. I've got these lines in %post: # GPG keys echo "Importing GPG keys ..." rpm --import /etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY* /usr/bin/yum -y update When they're uncommented the box hangs, i'd love to see output. My second issue is a cosmetic one. I want to set a standard prompt in /etc/bashrc. Out of the box the bashrc PS1 lines: if [ "$PS1" ]; then [ "$PS1" = "\\s-\\v\\\$ " ] && PS1="[\u@\h \W]\\$ " I have to make changes to that second line so a sed substitution would probably be my best bet. I'm not sure how to grab the part i need and change it. Manually i change that line to: PS1='\u@\h:\w\$' I'd like to get %post to do that for me. Next, i'd like to alter /boot/grub/grub.conf. I want to set it up for serial terminal support, so i have to add a serial and terminal lines at the top of the file say after any comment blocks that might or might not be there plus add console=tty0 and/or console=ttyS0,9600n8 to the append lines to however many kernels are there. Again, i'm assuming sed but i'm not sure how to get the parts i need and edit. I want to do other things, mostly with security, increasing password complexity requirements and pam, but that should be easy once i figure out how to alter the right sections in files. Hello, I'm doing an unattended CentOS 5.3 install in a virtual machine vmware. I'm redirecting output to a serial console because production boxes won't have monitors. I'm getting to the point of doing the post installation then the box freezes. The only command i have in %post is yum -y update. I'm not getting no output. Suggestions appreciated. In the commands section reboot is explicitly called so that at the end of the install the vm will reboot. Thanks. Dave.

For my boxes in production, I typically run FreeBSD at it seems to be the closest to "Linux world" to keep the learning curve shorter since my roots lie there. It is rock solid and performs well, even on older hardware like my Enterprise 420r. Debian works also although I don't have enough experience with it on SPARC to truly comment. If you're looking for pure usability, *BSD or Debian may be your best bet. If you want top notch performance, you're probably better off with (Open)Solaris. And of course, it all depends on your comfort level. There was Aurora Linux at one time for a Redhat based system running on SPARC. Thanks for the responses. I think this is what I want to do. I commented out #Defaults requiretty in /etc/sudo. But what I really wanted to do was just place it in VPNUSERS: %vpnusers ALL=NOPASSWD: /sbin/service myciscovpn start, \ /sbin/service myciscovpn stop, \ /sbin/service myciscovpn status, \ /usr/bin/mycisco, /usr/local/bin/vpnclient visudo took it but it did not work. Actually if I could just put it in user tony that would be best: tony ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL !requiretty But that gives a syntax error. Problems printing landscapes in AR

I have the L&G (AFAIK) Adobe Acrobat Reader, 9.1.0, on my 5.3 x86_64 machine, but it seems to be incapable of printing some landscape-mode PDFs. I created them by printing some wide graphics (PNG) files to PDF files from the image viewer, and that didn't work - AR prints them ONLY in portrait mode, no matter how the portrait-landscape is set, and no matter how it is displayed. Then I tried converting the graphics to PDFs using Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 (yeah, I know it's old, but it's free and it works for some things the GIMP won't do, like making graphics into PDFs) on my virtual WinXP SP2 "box" and got the same results. To my surprise, if I just print the PNGs from the image viewer, they print in landscape mode just fine (although they display in pseudo-portrait mode as counter-clockwise rotated images). Anyone got a clue why this might be? I blew away the PDFs that wouldn't print ('cuz I was pissed) but I can recreate them if needed. And, no, I'm not interested in tiff2pdf - it made enormous PDFs (4-10x original file size) out of every TIF I've tried with it, and APE2 makes little ones that are just as good _and_ smaller. Mounting Network Storage Issues

I have an Iomega NAS 1TB drive that I am using as just kind of a file sharing solution between all of my computers. Of course it is on a timed backup with my server however it just serves as a temporary solution for a bigger problem ( IE 15 different puters of all various OS Flavors). However I am not able to connect to any network storage server such as Windows PC's or NAS Storage using map network drive functions normally used with windows on CentOS. I am wondering if there is something goofy with this or is Cent just incompatible with NTFS network storage drives?

Hello, Is it advisable to clean up the system by deleting the i386 rpms? If so how do you know which ones to remove and which ones CentOS or RHEL require to be installed? You can use “yum list installed \*.i386″ to list all of the i386 rpms installed on your x86_64 system and I assume you could use “yum remove installed \*.i386″ to remove them all. If there were a few which were necessary to keep you could exclude them in yum.conf. Thanks for the help, Patrick

While reading the release notes for 5.4, I have not yet seen anything that looks like it needs attention, but are there any known issues or "gotchas" related to moving directly from 5.2 to 5.4? scp with tty

Hello I need to know a way to have scp allocate a tty on a remote machine so I can have it run sudo and activate a vpn which it will need to activate. scp with "-S" does not work. I can't chmod +s the cisco vpn client because when I try to run it it says it can not have setuser. I could have the user scp via root but I do not want to do that. Any way to have scp allocate a tty?

Hello, This might be called a core build not completely positive. What i want to do is make a completely customized centos 5.4 unattended CD or DVt not only installs a specific list of apps apps that i want on each system, but configures them automatically perhaps via scripts, and enables or disables services etc. Basically, i want to drop the CD or DVD in a box which will probably not have a monitor anyway, and walk away. I then come back or ssh in and everything is already installed, any repos are added, configured and ready to go. Is this a core build? I'd appreciate any pointers on this. Thanks. Dave.

Hi all, Does anyone know of a Linux firewall that offers layer 8 firewall / user level firewalling? Cyberoam (http://www.cyberoam.com/firewall.html) has a layer 8 firewall built into their UTM firewalls, and while it's a great product I find it a bit limited for what I want. I basically want to track which user access what on the internet, from an internal network. Copy OS live to different hardware

Hello, I've got some CentOS 5.3 servers that I want to clone to a backup server, possibly a VM machine. I want this to be done while the server is up, and keep it synced at least once a day. I've done this already by using RSYNC, but here's the twist: the backup machine could be different hardware, and needs to have a different IP address (so they don't conflict). My question: exactly what files should I exclude, so that I copy everything -except- what pertains to the ethernet card(s), and hard drive mounts. I know of at least: /etc/fstab /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/* /var/run /proc But what else? The original servers may have software raid, so those files can't be copied either. Bob

Possible to run iscsi-target and initiator on same server?

I am trying to install Oracle RAC in a two node cluster for testing purposes, so performance is not something that concerns me. I just want to go through the process all the way to creating a database. I have all the prerequisites except the shared storage and thought I'd give this a try. I'm running: - CentOS 5.3 kernel 2.6.18-164.el5 - iscsitarget-1.4.18-1 - iscsi-initiator-utils-6.2.0.868-0.18.el5_3.1 I can discover and login to the node using iscsiadm on the server that is not also running iet, and see the new scsi disk. When I try to login using iscsiadm on the server that is running the ietd daemon, I see packets going over the lo interface in both directions, but I get error 8 - connection timed out. Wireshark is reporting TCP Previous segment lost errors with large sequence numbers like 2999833 and 8999718. Has anybody tried this, and can anybody offer any help? Thanks. Linus

Rendering farm?

I received at least one email suggesting a Windows-based rendering farm - likely to consist of a few rack systems all running 64-bit Windows. I read an article on Tomshardware which gave some decent insight. What can list participants offer on this concept? I don't care _how_ the resource is implemented - virtual machine, cluster, etc. I just want to get the most resources for the money, and permit the users to get the results they need, when and how they need it. If a desktop solution can be implemented in multiuser farm environment, that would be great. Just provide links/resources to help me get better educated. Who knows, maybe others on the list would benefit from the discussion and results, too. If it makes most sense to migrate the money from a single desktop to a transparently available farm that does the same job the desktop could have done, and considering the farm is expandable, then I'm all for it, as would be the money people! 10 Year old IT Infrastructure

Hi Guys, I have a client who hopes to keep their server another 5 years making it 10 years old at that time. At this point there are no plans to add new infrastructure or a new server to the mix. Their business model is fairly static. I'd like to see them upgrade. Can anyone suggest specific reasons why running a business on 10 year old equipment is a bad thing? Specific arguments I can think of would be: - Hard/Impossible to find replacement hardware - Lack of support for both H/W and S/W - Possibly unable to run current versions of CentOS - Higher probability of hardware failures over time - Performance bottlenecks Any other thoughts? Hi All, I did a clean install of CentOS 5.3 yesterday. During setup I activated both adapters on startup. etho is my public IP and eth1 is my private/internal IP. It did not let me specify nameservers though. So I know this is resolv.conf. I know I put in: nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx But how do I put in nameservers for specific networks? Example, I want my public IP to resolve to the comcast name-servers top get out to things like Google. I want internal to default to my internal DNS once I have it setup. -Jason

But, when I go to map the network place as a network drive, I can browse to the network place and see the folders, but the OK button is always greyed out. Is there something wrong in my Apache config or is Windows being obtuse? Does anyone know how to fix this? Hi All, I had a few 320gb sata drives that had OS X on them. Before that they were Windows for testing. I put them in an IBM eServer 335 and now trying to install CentOS 5.3 I get to the partition -> Create custom. I take sda and create a swap and a software raid partition. Same with sdb I then click Raid, mount at / and Raid1 (Mirroring) I try to proceed and I get: boot partition is on a disk using GPT partitioning scheme but this machine cannot boot using GPT. I have never seen this before. Advice? -Jason

choppy audio playback

Oh, wise Centaurs, On the last install (Suse) I was running on this old notebook (Dell i600m) the audio worked fine. Specifically, Realplayer and onsite players (like you get at NPR and other sites) and youtube played just fine. But with this current install (CentOS 5.3, fully updated) all of those sources just mentioned play choppy. It's like an echo so severe that it's impossible to make out what's being said or played. Oddly, piping "festival" into "play" works fine as does using "play" on wav files. Realplay (Gold 11) plays mp3 files just fine too. disk I/O problems and Solutions

Hey folks, CentOS / PostgreSQL shop over here. I'm hitting 3 of my favorite lists with this, so here's hoping that the BCC trick is the right way to do it :-) We've just discovered thanks to a new Munin plugin http://blogs.amd.co.at/robe/2008/12/graphing-linux-disk-io-statistics-with-… that our production DB is completely maxing out in I/O for about a 3 hour stretch from 6am til 9am This is "device utilization" as per the last graph at the above link. Load went down for a while but is now between 70% and 95% sustained. We've only had this plugin going for less than a day so I don't really have any more data going back further. But we've suspected a disk issue for some time - just have not been able to prove it. Our system IBM 3650 - quad 2Ghz e5405 Xeon 8K SAS RAID Controller 6 x 300G 15K/RPM SAS Drives /dev/sda - 2 drives configured as a RAID 1 for 300G for the OS /dev/sdb - 3 drives configured as RAID5 for 600G for the DB 1 drive as a global hot spare /dev/sdb is the one that is maxing out. We need to have a very serious look at fixing this situation. But we don't have the money to be experimenting with solutions that won't solve our problem. And our budget is fairly limited. Is there a public library somewhere of disk subsystems and their performance figures? Done with some semblance of a standard benchmark? One benchmark I am partial to is this one : http://wiki.postgresql.org/wiki/PgCon_2009/Greg_Smith_Hardware_Benchmarking… One thing I am thinking of in the immediate term is taking the RAID5 + hot spare and converting it to RAID10 with the same amount of storage. Will that perform much better? In general we are planning to move away from RAID5 toward RAID10. We also have on order an external IBM array (don't have the exact name on hand but model number was 3000) with 12 drive bays. We ordered it with just 4 x SATAII drives, and were going to put it on a different system as a RAID10. These are just 7200 RPM drives - the goal was cheaper storage because the SAS drives are about twice as much per drive, and it is only a 300G drive versus the 1T SATA2 drives. IIRC the SATA2 drives are about $200 each and the SAS 300G drives about $500 each. So I have 2 thoughts with this 12 disk array. 1 is to fill it up with 12 x cheap SATA2 drives and hope that even though the spin-rate is a lot slower, that the fact that it has more drives will make it perform better. But somehow I am doubtful about that. The other thought is to bite the bullet and fill it up with 300G SAS drives. any thoughts here? recommendations on what to do with a tight budget? It could be the answer is that I just have to go back to the bean counters and tell them we have no choice but to start spending some real money. But on what? Not a centos specific question here, but if anyone can save me from shooting myself in the foot would appreciate any pointers.... I have an older centos 4.7 box that I recently replaced with a newer one running centos 5.3. I'd like to add the hard disk from the older one to the newer one before I scrap it for good. I don't care about the data on it, would just like the extra drive on the newer one for my home lan usage. The disk layout on the older one is a 2 partition (/boot and /) with / being a logical volume. Bare Metal vs virtualization

Hello to all: I know this list is generally Linux-only, but I figured I'd try to gain wisdom from those with hard-core Windows needs, too. I was recently pricing out a high-end desktop system for a user who will doing a lot of CAD, Matlab, SolidWorks, and other apps that will utilize a lot of number crunching and video. The quote for the desktop (64-bit Vista is likely), which included 12 GB RAM, two 1 TB SATA hard drives, a high-end NVidia 3D video card, and two Intel quad-core 3.3 Ghz processors, was about $15k. An approval manager asked if the money could be better spent towards a cluster for others to use. This user's needs are for Windows-based apps. The open question, then, is can the results the user needs be derived from a high-end Windows cluster or virtual environment that is multi-user capable and runs Windows-based apps, or do they need bare metal for true results and performance? I awaiting an answer on this from the user. In the meantime, for those who may have been faced with this, too, what have you discovered/learned? Thanks. Scott

I'd like to understand better the sysadmin aspects of running a wiki. I don't have, and don't intend to at this stage, a web server, but I do have spare capacity on my LAN server box, where I'd like to install MediaWiki. DNS is confusing! (I really need some help understanding!)

OK, I am confused and DNS is the reason. So, Comcast, 13 public IP's bound to my modem. Each public IP has a DNS name from comcast (they assign it automatically) like: 173.13.167.209 --> 173-13-167-209-sfba.hfc.comcastbusiness.net I created a DNS entry at GoDaddy for 173.13.167.209 that is 'inhouse.theindiecompanyllc.com' When eth0 is alive, I see that it tells me my name is 173-13-167-209-sfba.hfc.comcastbusiness.net since I am using a comcast DNS Server. So if I setup my own internal caching name server for 173.13.167.209 then I have a third name or can I just use the GoDaddy DNS entry I gave it? Do I then set my systems to use my local name server for their information and not Comcast? How does that effect internet browsing where I dont have entries for google.com, etc in my local name server? Lastly, If I have two NICS (one is 173.13.167.209 and second private internal IP) For my local name server I would have two entries, one for public and one for the private card so I can do something like 'inhouse.local' and get intranet or ssh inhouse.local, etc correct? Hi Linux geeks; I have just shipped from windows to linux. I am setting up a linuxa server with centos. now after 5 to 6 normal startups shutdown; now this problem has come up. I am not able to get any relevant link any where. /mote: UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck manually can any body please tell me what is this. and how to solve the problem. If you install CentOS in Windows , you firstly backup the important data to some place in case of the machine is crashed;Then you can start to install CentOS by the useful tool which called grub-for-docs. My doubts with apache server on centos installation

Hi Linux geeks, I have just started to setup a production server with centos; and moved from windows server to centos. My first encounter with this great linux distro is good. I am not able to understand what is the point of having scattered folders for apache server installation. when i see the /etc/httpd folder; it has only conf folder and links to logs, module and , run. As i have been working on Windows where all these files are stored in a single installation folder. So, this makes me quite confused to start with. Can anyone tell me what is the idea behind using such a installation pattern. Now i am going to install java, I have two options via RPM and other is extracting the distro and use it. i have a feeling if i use first option, all the folders like jre and jdk will be palced any where. Not to be found. Please tell me or point to any relevant link. so i can go ahead without any doubt over this issue. -- Regards, Vijay Shanker

OT: What's wrong with RAID5

Hi all, Sorry for the OT. I've got an IBM N3300-A10 NAS. It runs Data Ontap 7.2.5.1. The problem is, from the docs it says that it only supports either RAID-DP or RAID4. What I want to achieve is Max Storage Capacity, so I change it from RAID-DP to RAID4, but with RAID4, the maximum disk in a RAID Group decrease from 14 to 7. In the end, either using RAID-DP or RAID4, the capacity is the same. Now, why RAID5 is not supported? I believe using RAID5, I can get more storage capacity, can't I? I also notice with some onboard RAID controller, they only support either RAID0, RAID1, or RAID1+0. No RAID5. What's wrong with RAID5, is there any technical limitation with RAID5? Thanks.

Desktop apps, OO and Scribus

I just came across a user who tried to view a Word document on a CentOS5 machine, and it seems that desktop, firefox etc. are trying to view it with Scribus instead of OpenOffice. This needs to change. Is there a system-wide setting for it? On the older, RHEL3 systems we used to have mozplugger, but it's not available in the standard CentOS repositories or rpmforge. What are we supposed to use now? I have one CentOS box here that has mozplugger installed, but I don't know where that came from, it's not in the yum log files.

Cloning Centos server with RSync - what to exclude?

Hi all, I have a few CentOS servers that I want to mirror live, to be standby spares. The "spare" machines could be either a different machine (with a different motherboard), or a VM in Vmware server. I've used rsync in the past, which works well for doing it while the machine is live. However, I want the destination to be running different hardware, and have a different IP address assigned to the nic. My goal is to rsync everything -except- the files that pertain to the network interface, and the file system mount points. My process is this: 1. Install Centos on "spare" machine, configure for proper ethernet. 2. Rsync from live to spare, excluding files pertaining to NIC and FS. Then if it needs to go live, I simply change the IP address, and I'm off and running. The question is: what do I exclude? I know /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/, /etc/fstab, and /etc/modules*, but what else? I think there may be some stuff in /var also that deals with raid, etc. The live computer is running software raid, while the backup will not. Bob

Hey all I was sitting here thinking about things and I came up with an idea that sounded, at least in my head, like a good one. There has been a boom in things like twitter and brainbird and social networking setups in general. I was wondering if the project or anyone would be interested in setting up a status.net server specifically for the CentOS project ? Why? you ask, well here are some of my reasons. 1) a central hub for all things centos, updates, wiki updates various messages from the dev team and whatever else 2) We could create groups much like in irc centos, social, devs, and many others 3) another outlet to get questions answered besides forums mailing lists or irc. 4) Quick collaboration between parties interested in CentOS Some other questions would be Where could we get this hosted ? What would we call it ? (centosuniverse - lame but hey) Would this be viable for the CentOS project ? I have noticed with brainbird you can go over the 140 character limit which may also be a good idea 140 can limit you in some ways. I also thought this would be a good way to create a community outlet. It is after all easier to post a quick 140 char message about what is going on than to compose a whole email or forum post. I've seen several websites and communities starting to use this as a outlet for their projects. So the ultimate question is (poor HHG2G reference there) - Would this work and would it be wise to persue this option ? I would volunteer to do the leg work to get things going and help anywhere I can of course. But would others like to collaborate on this as well ? Linux CD Stores

HI All, It seems that the days of ordering burned CD's of distros has faded. People just have fast internet now. I recall a number of times that I ordered Slackware CD's or others because it was just easier than downloading and burning myself. I am actually planning on ordering CentOS 5.4 media when available to support the project. Does anyone think these store make any money? (Linux CD Mall, Linux CD Shop, Linux Central...etc) I see a number of them (like Mad Tux) dont exist anymore. Wouldn't someone selling a set for a few dollars plus shipping clean up? Opinions, please. -ML

tgtadm and exported iscsi volumes

Out of haste I decided for the first time not to pull down and compile iet to export a single volume to a windows machine so I just used tgtd. Well, much more time later than otherwise would be the case had I used iet, when I mount the volume on the windows ini, it can't find and install a driver? WTF? This have anything to do with the tgtd being a tech preview:) Anybody seen this b4? jlc
