Hello, On my system with a Intel SCU Controller and a Raid 10 System it is not possible to install this Raid10. I have tested this with a CentOS 7 and Opensuse all found my Raid but with CentOS 8 this is broken? I found on start the Installation a Error from mdadm that ist all. Missing repodata/ for CentOS 8 on

Hi folks, I've noted that the CentOS 8 debuginfo repo lacks the repodata/ directory: http://debuginfo.centos.org/8/x86_64/ Did the maintainers forget to upload it? It does have all the .rpm files under the Packages/ sub-directory though: http://debuginfo.centos.org/8/x86_64/Packages/ And no repodata/ there either. Also, I've noted the 8-stream/ directory which is empty. Is it something we are supposed to use too? Thanks for your help! Best, Yichun

the AnyConnect vpn doesn't appear to be available on C8. Pidgin fails to connect google

I recently upgraded to Centos 7.7 and when I rebooted everything seemed to be OK except that pidgin failed to connect to gtalk with the error SSL Handshake Failed After trying several configuration changes with no luck I tried pidgin on a host that was still running Centos 7.6 and it had the same error. Based on that I'm concluding that it doesn't appear to have anything to do with Centos 7,7 but that the failure is coincidental. Does anyone know what the problem is and how to resolve it? Hello, I have a machine with Centos7, Plasma desktop and XRDP. Many people log in the machine, and then press 'X' of the rdp window, instead of logging off. Is there a way to automatically log off their sessions, similar to MS Windows setting? Thanks,

CentOS 8 creates /boot with ext4

I just installed CentOS 8 in a VirtualBox VM, to explore it. Immediately, I noticed something strange. I insatlled it using a kickstart file, whose partitioning section is this: zerombr clearpart --all --initlabel reqpart --add-boot part pv.01 --ondisk=/dev/sda --size=1 --grow volgroup vg01 pv.01 logvol / --name=lv_root --vgname=vg01 --size=1 --grow bootloader --driveorder=sda On CentOS 7, this resulted in an XFS-formatted /boot filesystem. In CentOS 8, this created an EXT4-formatted /boot filesystem. I looked through RHEL 8's release notes and other documentation, but could not find any place that mentions this change. Does anyone know if this is deliberate, or a bug of some kind? Regards, Anand

LVM and thin snapshots

Hi there! Im new here. Im trying to install Centos 8 on my laptop. I also want to have a contingency plan in case something brakes. My first thoughts were to use LVM. The idea is that i would take multiple snapshots of the system during the day/week and will keep them for a short time. I read RHEL documentation about how lvm works and pretty much understand how to manage the above scenario with LVM snapshots and encryption. If i understood lvm snapshots will cause delay the system after multiple snapshots. The best way to avoid it is using thin snapshots. At rhel documentation it says that is possible for a non thin volume to get a thin snapshots. [Correct me if my above assumptions are wrong or if there is a better solution for my purpose.] So i created a group with 3 volumes groups and one thin pool. Im trying to take a snapshot and i get the message. "Cannot use writable LV as the external origin." I read somewhere that i should change it to read only and then take a snapshot. Although that would be a problem i just try it to see if it works. Then i got the message "Cannot use active LV for the external origin" Any ideas??? Thanks in advance Georgios

Update to Centos 7.7 / Arch ppc64le / Problem with nvidia driver

Hello, today I updated a CentOS 7.6 ppc64le machine to CentOS 7.7. After reboot to the new kernel (4.18.0-80.7.2.el7.ppc64le) dkms could not build the nvidia-module. Error-message from dkms: Compiler version check failed: The major and minor number of the compiler used to compile the kernel: gcc version 8.3.1 20190311 (Red Hat 8.3.1-3) (GCC) does not match the compiler used here: cc (GCC) 4.8.5 20150623 (Red Hat 4.8.5-39) Output of /proc/version with new kernel running is: Linux version 4.18.0-80.7.2.el7.ppc64le (mockbuild(a)ppc64le-01.bsys.centos.org) (gcc version 8.3.1 20190311 (Red Hat 8.3.1-3) (GCC)) #1 SMP Thu Sep 12 15:45:05 UTC 2019 Problem seams to be: The kernel was compiled with gcc-version 8.3.1 and installed is gcc 4.8.5. Centos 7, netboot using initramfs.img

Hello, I am trying to boot a node using initramfs. (actually it is a little more complicated, I am booting the node using perceus and vnfs images). Anyway, when booting with a kernel and using initramfs.img, dracut is trying to to configure both Network NICs, the first one would be fine, but I don't want it to ven try to configure the 2nd one using dhcp. How can I stop dracut from trying to do that? thanks, Ron

For those who come across this thread, I've found the exact list of changed and dropped package between rhel:7 and rhel:8: https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_enterprise_linux/8/ht… Too bad that the "note" column is empty in the dropped package table. NO word about reason or possible alternatives. Also too bad that those drops were not advertised before release so developers could think about migrating there code. That would have helped me a lot if I had knew that docbook-utils-pdf would be dropped....I would have searched for an alternative long ago. Olivier. How to dump/restore a CentOS 7 system

Hi, I need to port OSCAR Cluster and SystemImager softwares to centos8, but I miss a lot of package that seems to be built for centos-8. For example, I cant find docbook-utils and docbook-utls-pdf while I see them here: https://koji.mbox.centos.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=651 I’ve installed epel-release and elrepo-release and centos-release-stream. Do I miss something or is it a matter of time due to mirro syncs? I misse btrfs packages, perl-Tk packages, docbook packages and many more that I can find on https://koji.mbox.centos.org/koji/builds Where am I wrong? PS: I’m running CentOS-8 in docker (roboxes/centos8 wainting for official centos:8 container). USB of ISO image

Hi I did the dd iso to my USB. all is fine. I can mount the second partition (which is not iso 9660) and edit the grub.cfg file. Question is what do I run after that so my new menu option appears ? grub2-install /dev/sdd Is that the correct command to get grub to notice my new file ? Assuming sdd is the USB disk of course. USB thumb drive for CentOS 7.7 to install

I took the "everything" iso and did the dd command to my 16G thumb drive. I booted and entered my usual ks=http://xxx on the boot line. All good so far. It gets my kickstart file and installation begins. At some point it says Installing libreoffice-opensymbol-fonts (492/1948) Retrying download of 1:libreoffice-opensymbol-fonts-5.3.6.1-21.el7.norarch then after 10 retries it fails. I have verfied this file is on my USB disk, I have re-downloaded from different mirror, the Everything file, dd that to my USB disk, tried the re-install and still the error. I don't know what to try next. Jerry

I just skimmed through the deprecated, and there's a *lot*. But one hit me in the face: if you make a change to /etc/nsswitch.conf, you need to REBOOT THE SERVER? Ok, did this come from Redmond?* Oh, and I note virt-manager replaced by cockpit. Can someone pass along a little note: Sybase has had, for a bunch of years, a required program... called cockpit. I think they've got the name by priority.... * I thought that "your cursor has moved; please reboot Windows to have this change take effect was a joke... until, about 5-6 years ago, I found in trying to set up samba at home on Win 8 that if I changed the workgroup name... it required Windows to be rebooted. So... really? nsswitch.conf, and reboot? Now I think I'll install C 7 to dual boot on my lady's workstation, rather than 8. mark "or my manager this I should go to ubuntu, which I dislike...." mark

Video projector vs. onboard video card

Hi, I have a CentOS 7 desktop client installed on an old Dell Optiplex computer with an Intel video card integrated into the motherboard. The card has a single VGA connector, and the 19" monitor is connected to it. I wonder how I could connect a video projector to this computer while keeping the monitor, in a mirroring configuration, e. g. output is the same on the video projector and the monitor. Do I have to replace my onboard video card by something like an NVidia GT710 graphic card with two video connectors ? Or is there a different solution for this? CentOS 8 Boot.iso image DHCP4 not working?

I'm just wondering if anyone else is not getting a DHCPv4 address in Anaconda, using the CentOS 8 Boot.iso image? I get an IPv6 Autoconfig address, but it doesn't want to pick up a DHCPv4. This is in a Hyper-V Gen2 VM, connected to the same network all my other dev VMs are on, and picking up DHCPv4 without issue. And, congratz to the CentOS team on 2 releases in a week (or so)! I've checked a couple of mirrors and centos.org itself and I don't see updates for the 8 repos yet. Is there a new location for updates now that we're seeing the 8 repos or do I just need to wait for the repos to get a chance to synchronize fully?

Interesting update problem

I had problems updating a 7.6 machine to 7.7, so I reinstalled it from scratch and applied all the 7.6 updates, then attempted the 7.7 upgrade again. It failed with the same errors. I'm wondering where the problem is? # yum update ... [hundreds of lines of the next line] warning: Unable to get systemd shutdown inhibition lock Error in PRETRANS scriptlet in rpm package 1:java-1.8.0-openjdk-headless-1.8.0.222.b10-1.el7_7.x86_64 Error in PRETRANS scriptlet in rpm package 1:java-11-openjdk-headless-11.0.4.11-1.el7_7.x86_64 Error in PRETRANS scriptlet in rpm package kmod-kvdo-6.1.2.41-5.el7.x86_64 mesa-libEGL-devel-18.3.4-5.el7.x86_64 was supposed to be installed but is not! Verifying : mesa-libEGL-devel-18.3.4-5.el7.x86_64 1/3285 [repeating for dozens or hundreds of other packages] ... Failed: [list of all upgrade packages] Of course mesa-libEGL-devel-18.3.4-5.el7.x86_64 is not installed, that's the new version. The installed version is mesa-libEGL-devel-18.0.5-4.el7_6.x86_64. Where did it all go wrong? I tried clearing the yum cache and rebuilding the rpm db, no joy. Another 7.6 machine upgraded fine, although from a smaller installed package set.

Was reading the long list of things being deprecated in the RHEL 8 release notes t'other day, and saw my old friend sendmail on the list. I've stuck by her because I've learned how she likes to be stroked to get the best out of her, and quail at the thought of taking on a new MTA and having to learn it all all over again. But I guess I'm going to have to, soon or late, probably sooner than later. :( Can anyone point me to resources specifically for helping us ignorant folk in converting all the arcan-ity in sendmail.mc into something equivalent for Postfix? 7.7.1908, interface bonding, and default route

Hi! I just upgraded a machine to 7.7.1908 and the default route is not being set on boot. This particular server has a bonded interface, and the corresponding configuration for the master is ( /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-bond0): TYPE=Bond BOOTPROTO=none DEFROUTE=yes IPV4_FAILURE_FATAL=yes NAME=bond0 DEVICE=bond0 ONBOOT=yes IPADDR=10.3.20.131 PREFIX=24 GATEWAY=10.3.20.1 DNS1=10.3.2.8 BONDING_MASTER=yes BONDING_OPTS="mode=802.3ad xmit_hash_policy=layer2 miimon=100" The slaves (two of them) are configured like TYPE=Ethernet BOOTPROTO=none NAME=bond0-slave0 DEVICE=em3 ONBOOT=yes MASTER=bond0 SLAVE=yes After booting, the routing table is 10.3.20.0/24 dev bond0 proto kernel scope link src 10.3.20.131 metric 300 with no default route configured (manually adding it will work, of course.) running init disconnects ssh session

Noticing a new behavior lately. Logged in via sshd and ssh keys as root to a remote system. When changing runlevels between multi-user or graphical the ssh session is disconnected. It's not a big deal but annoying if I have other tasks to do on that particular system. Hi all! I keep getting reports from selinux, like below, and I have no clue what the app is it's talking about, nor how do figure out if it should be allowed access or not. Anyone got any advice to offer? UEFI booting

I installed my first UEFI disk yesterday. Seemed to go fine. CentOS 7.6 x86_64 I then took that disk "out" of that machine and put it another machine - it seems to not even boot. I put the original disk back in that machine and it boots fine. I put the UEFI disk back in the machine I built it on and it works fine. They are similar machines either and i3 and i7. Shouldn't that work? Build a UEFI disk on machine A - move it to machine B? Thanks Jerry

conflicts in updating to CR repo

Note, first of all I haven't actually updated, I'm just running "yum update" to see what conflicts, if any, I get so I can be prepared when the final 7.7 release happens. I've traditionally used the nvidia packages from elrepo, but recently enabled rpmfusion (back when I started using 7.x, I disabled rpmfusion because it took them a looooong time to get a EL7 repository up). I use the priority plugin in yum, and have elrepo at priority 50 and rpmfusion at priority 60, so the elrepo nvidia packages should "win", but yum seems to be confused about which packages to use. So now when doing yum update (with CR enabled) I get this long list of dependency issues regarding the nvidia packages. I have two VMs hosted on ESX, running CentOS 6.10 One has kernel 2.6.32-754.11.1.el6.i686 and the other has 2.6.32-754.18.2.el6.i686 Both have selinux, currently in permissive mode. I need to work on a host which has been offline and powered down for some time. I has CentOS-6.9 installed. At some point it had two nics, one on the motherboard (still present and working) and one as an expansion card. When booted the console displays: pciehp 0000:00:1c:0:pcie04: Failed to check link status repeatedly. How to disable i915 module

I am setting up CentOS 7 on my new firewall. This will run as a head- less system, accessed via a serial console when necessary. It's only a 2GB system, so I don't see any reason to have the GPU consuming any of the RAM. I've blacklisted the i915, drm, and drm_kms_helper modules and rebuilt the initramfs, but the i915 module is still being loaded. Anyone know what might be loading the module and how I can stop it? RPMDB problem

When doing yum operations I get this message at the end of whatever yum was doing: ** Found 1 pre-existing rpmdb problem(s), 'yum check' output follows: brscan4-0.4.8-1.x86_64 is a duplicate with brscan4-0.4.3-1.x86_64 It is true, if I do "rpm -qa | grep brscan" it shows two of them. what's the best/proper way to deal with this? -remove both, reinstall one? -remove one? which one? I don't see a feature in rpm (or yum) for removing a single one of duplicate packages. How? Thanks in advance! File server as host for a Windows Server VM?

I hope that someone here can give some advice on the following: I have a Samba based Active Directory. A CentOS 7.6 machine runs as a file server and hosts the Windows user profiles for all the Windows workstations. Now management has decided that they need a Windows server for a couple of administrative applications, which need MS SQL Server. That would be the only role of this Windows. Since the above mentioned server has enough resources (2x Quad Core Xeon 2.66 GHz with HT and 48 GB of RAM, a dual port 10 Gb NIC) I thought of making it a host for a Windows virtual machine using KVM. Given the resources and current setup we have, at the moment it wouldn't be practical to implement both servers as VMs on top of a bare metal hypervisor. According to your experience, is there any motive why I shouldn't use such a setup? Thank you for any insights.

Opinions on using CR repository in production environments.

I was wondering what people's opinions are on running the CR repository on production systems? I'm currently predisposed to not do it since it indicates it hasn't fully gone through QA yet. But from my understanding except for the alt-arch systems these are just recompiles of the redhat RPMs after debranding right? I'm Curious how other people are treating this repository since, from the sounds of it, rpms are going to be in holding here between releases. So would you treat it as a production repository or for testing only? Do we know how it's actually intended to be treated? Any opinion is appreciated.

clamd / amavisd missing socket

I think something along these lines appeared before but I was unable to find them. I'm on a 7.6 system, been running clamav and amavisd-new since 6 days with little problem. On a recent reboot, clamd@amavisd does not start up and fails manual start. The problem seems to be the missing socket that connects the pair, "/var/run/clamd.amavisd/clamd.socket". I believe this should be created by systemd files but I see no indication of them on my system. Anyone know which files might be missing and where to get copies? Or a work around to run clamd@amavisd and get rid of the "*** UNCHECKED ***' additions to my my Subject lines? BTW manual creation of the socket with netcat had no effect on the startup. Increase logging verbosity of saslauthd?

Hi CentOS 7.X, sendmail.x86_64 8.14.7-5.el7, cyrus-sasl.x86_64 2.1.26-23.el7 There are conflicting message on how to increase the logging of saslauthd. I know I can do this: /usr/sbin/saslauthd -d -n0 -m /var/run/saslauthd -a pam but that requires a terminal as saslauthd logs the output to STDOUT, this is not what I want. I would like to have it started as a daemon and verbosity of logging increased into a log file. NFS Server on Centos 7.6.1810 dying without reason

Good morning, in order to post proper documentation, what logs (or log level) do I need to troubleshoot a Centos 7.6.1810 3.10.0-957.27.2.el7.x86_64 tha tis running a NFS server on top LVM on top of XFS on top of VDO on top of MDAM on a 6 SSD disk RAID6 ? This physical NFS server is servign 2 NFS v4.2 shares to 2 physical KVM virtualization hosts. CUPS job handling

Hi, is it somehow possible to make CUPS automatically redirect jobs, and following jobs, away from printers which can not print them to other printers that can print them until the printers that couldn't print them are again able to print them? Like I have a bunch of label printers which are all the same, and all of which are prone to run out of labels or out of ribbon every now and then. It can take hours or even days before someone can refill a printer. Hence it would be very useful if CUPS could be told something like "if printer A doesn't print, move its current job to printer B and divert all new jobs sent to A to printer B instead until A prints again". What exactly happens when a printer that is member of a class can not print a job that was sent to the class? Will the unprintable job be automatically moved to another member of the same class, or will it only be aborted and never printed? With a class of two printers and one of them running out of labels, /var/log/cups/error_log only holds: ... [Job 174733] Stopping unresponsive job. What does this mean? Has the job been printed or not? Has it been printed after I refilled the printer?

We use oval to check the system vulnerability. Redhat offer official oval(https://www.redhat.com/security/data/oval/), and it works well on redhat. There is no official centos oval, and using redhat oval on centos got false results. centos is based redhat, so I wrote a script fetch redhat oval files and convert it to useful for centos. This evening I decided to do some work on my development C7 system. As I have not touched it for a while, and wanted to install new services I thought I'd better yum update first. I saw that it only did updates from Google and PHP, and none from the system repo's so I had a closer look. It showed certificate errors on a number of repo's. This is most often useful if you are using a newer distribution release than is supported by the repository (and the packages for the previous distribution release still work). 3. Hello, Consider two following cases: 1. On production systems on television stations, a sysadmin give teens (remaja group, age 13 and older) full administrator privileges by adding this line to sudoers: %remaja ALL=(ALL:ALL) ALL Rationale: Almost all programs on the system can only be run by teens as root. 2. On production systems on tobacco factories, a sysadmin also give adults (age 18 and older, dewasa group) full administrator privileges by adding this line to sudoers: %dewasa ALL=(ALL:ALL) ALL Also, the sudo lecture file configured in sudoers (/etc/sudo.lecture) contain the following: WARNING: I BROKE MY SYSTEM BECAUSE OF SUDO. CUSTOMER SERVICE: ($a_random_phone_number) Rationale: All programs on system can only be run by adults, because such programs might break system. However, instead of calling sysadmin when something breaks the system, adults can call customer service instead, which isn't qualified for system maintenance. Based on above cases, is it OK to give group of random users full administrator privileges using sudo, by adding them to sudoers with ALL privileges? I used to be able to 'repair' ext4 fs issue (when the boot process drops you into emergency mode)... but now with xfs - it does not seem to let me do that. xfs_repair /dev/sda3 or xfs_repair -L /dev/sda3 both say fatal error fatal error -- couldn’t initialize XFS library How can I repair XFS with burning a DVD and finding an external USB reader etc... Hi, folks, Well, it's ten years that I've been on this list, right when I started this job. But, it's time to move on... I'm retiring. (Yeah, that old.) So, though I'll be part time for a few months, and running CentOS at home (in spite of my manager's pushing me to do Ubuntu). This list is *so* much more useful than any of the ones I've seen for Ubuntu, or much else. I'm very much looking forward to C 8. One more thing: I know I've been over the top on ethics "I work for a US federal contractor, but not saying more", even though there's folks like Todd, who's military. Anyway, now that I'm out, today, my line (in person) was, "I'm with the federal goverment, and I'm here to help you." Then, after they ask if I'll have to kill them, I can say, no: I've been with the NIH, and so, yes, I really meant it. I'll show up occasionally, but not like I have been. Slideshow/presentation software for CentOS

I am looking for software to make slideshows/presentations on CentOS, incorporating photos, videos and text (possibly also music) allowing for transition effects etc. I'd like to be able to drag and drop/rearrange photos etc. from different folders into a timeline and eventually end up with something I can show. Ideally without having to make copies of photos and store them in a folder specific for this but drag and drop from whatever folder the photo etc. already exists in. Impress and similar PowerPoint-like software excluded. I have found a few packages on the net but nothing that is still being developed. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you.

I have a simple DHCP range . option routers 192.168.1.1; subnet 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 { range 192.168.1.60 192.168.1.129; range 192.168.1.150 192.168.1.199; } So I want to add a range 192.168.2.1 -> 192.168.2.254 so I did this: subnet 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.254.0 { range 192.168.1.60 192.168.1.129; range 192.168.1.150 192.168.1.199; range 192.168.2.1 192.168.2.254; } then tried to restart the dhcpd server... kmod-nvidia-430.40-1.el7_6.elrepo.x86_64 fails to install

Everyone, On August 2, my desktop unit updated with kmod-nvidia-430.40-1.el7_6.elrepo.x86_64nnn which broke yum having a multiple of dependencies not being present. I uninstall kmod- dvidia with the hopes that a fresh install would fix the provlem, but it did not. nvidia-detect returns : kmod-nvidia An Intel display controller was also detected I was hoping that this was a repository problem that would become fixed, but I am still now unable to reinstall kmod-nvidia. Has anyone else had this problem, and does anyone have any suggestions as to how I might begin a fix. I would surely like to use my nvidia card again. Thanks for your help!!! Greg Ennis

Hi, I've posted this on cups forum several days ago but did not receive any suggestion. May be Centos Users/admins could give me some advices. I've setup my first cups server to provide printing services to several clients (instead of each CentOS client reaching the printer). It is a dedicated VM running CentOS7. On the web interface all requests belong to Withheld user and it is difficult to know who is printing and who can cancel his request. Is there some documentation/tutorial to instruct cups to use a remote ldap server to identify users? Of course users should not be allowed to log on the cups server with ssh! Thanks Patrick

CentOS 5 file system read only issue

Hello Everyone, We are using CentOS 5 system for certain application. Those are VM guests running in VMware. There is datastore issue occasionally, causing all file systems becoming read only file systems. So application stop working, and opened files cannot be written either. We cannot even ssh login to the system. Typically we had to power cycle the VM. We are trying to add reliability to the application so that if files cannot be written, application should time out. We are trying to use IO::Select to handle timeout. Per investigation, we found below does not work as expected: my $s = IO::Select->new( $fh ); if ( $io->can_write( 10 ) { # print to the file } It seems like can_write returns true even we manually made file system read only in our testing case. CentOS Amazon Machine Image?

I am totally new to AWS. There was a posting here ~ a year ago making claims about setting up a CentOS image on AWS. I have created a free AWS account and am looking at the available images. None are named CentOS. There is a Redhat Enterprise Linux 8 and Amazon's own Linux and SUSE, Ubuntu, but I don't find CentOS. This is a learning endeavor. I was thinking to first set up a BIND slave for my domain. Then move on to a http image, then work with MariaDB. All to see what I can do with AWS that is familiar to what I do on my own servers. Any pointers greatly appreciated.

OK, after beating my head against the wall for an hour or so, I finally figured out why I could not ssh from a MacMini (running MacOSX 10.11.6) to my Linux Desktop (running CentOS 6), using the amandabackup account with public key authentification. SELinux! It seems the SELinux won't allow this if the target user's "home" directory is does not have a <mumble>_home_t security context. It there some trick/hack to fix this *specifically* for the amandabackup account? Right now the amandabackup $HOME is /var/lib/amanda/ and its security context is system_u:object_r:amanda_var_lib_t:s0 It of course needs to retain this for amanda to work. But I need to do something non-standard: I am not able to build a *working* version of the amanda client on the Mac. Despite what it says on the amanda.org website, Amanda is basically not supported under BSD (MacOSX is basically BSD) and I am not getting help on the Amanda mailing lists. I need to backup this machine, so I am going to punt and resurect a script I was using before I started using Amanda and do an independent backup process, but I want to put the backups on the same disk that amandabackup is using and the disk is set up to be written by amandabackup, so I want to use the amandabackup to write the files, using ssh from the amanda account on the Mac. Is there some hack to get SELinux to cooperate with this scheme? Hey there, RedHat released the new version 8.24.0-41 of rsyslog on 2019-08-06. We need some fixes of this version and would like to know about which time this version will be available for CentOS. http://mirror.centos.org/centos/7/os/x86_64/Packages/ still lists rsyslog-8.24.0-34 ( 2018-11-12). failing to install LibreOffice 6.3.0.4

As in subject, am attempting to install latest LibreOffice on C7. unpack all the rpm files, type "yum install *.rpm", or "yum localinstall *.rpm" and yum spews the list of filenames (with the word "examining" in front of each file) then says "nothing to do". what the hey? I tried "yum clean all" but it didn't help. I also verified the sha256sum of the download. Anyone got any good advice? thanks in advance! DHCP and no network for long time

Odd thing happened... A centos 7 install set for DHCP. boot the box no network connected. I let it like this overnight. I come in this morning and plug in the network. Is it supposed to get a DHCP address at that time ? It did not . service network restart did get an address. if I unplug the network, reboot the box, want a minute or so - then plug the network in - it gets a DHCP address. Is there a "limit" to the time that the OS will keep trying to get a DHCP address ? Thanks, Jerry

another bizarre thing...

Hi all! I'm stuck on something really bizarre that is happening to a product I "own" at work. It's a C program, built on CentOS, runs on CentOs or RHEL, has been in circulation since the early 00's, is in use at hundreds of sites. recently, at multiple customer sites it has started just going away. no core file (yes, ulimit is configured), nothing in any of its (several) log files. it's just gone. running it under strace until it dies reveals that every thread has been given a SIGKILL. How does one figure out who deliverd a SIGKILL? For other, non-fatal, signals it is possible to glean the PID of the sending process in a signal handler, but obviously you can't do that for SIGKILL because the app doesn't survive the signal. I'm grasping at straws here, and am open to almost any kind of suggestion that can be followed-up (as compared to "beats me" which is where I am now). I'm even wondering if systemd has something to do with it. Hi Fred, I do this from time to time... download the tgz... then I extract the tgz, cd RPMS then run rpm -i *.rpm --force Then of course you man need to change your path to use the new /op/.... Hope that helps, Jerry

Data migration from one server to another- Centos 7

I want to move all my OS, services like Apache configuration and application (web server) files and folders to another brand new server. Both servers are running on Centos 7. i want to clone everything. My questions 1- what is the easiest way to do this? 2- do I need to partition hard-drive of new server exactly as old one? 3- Is there any changes to make on new server after full migration? 4- will root and other user credentials stay the same? C7 Kernel module compilation

Hey there, I'm trying to compile a single module following this guide: https://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/BuildingKernelModules#head-d2e4c05886f94c701… and https://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/I_need_the_Kernel_Source I tried to compile a module for novuton led controller supplied by thirdparty and I got several error. To check if this is the wrong procedure I tried to compile cifs module as listed in howto but when loading with modprobe I get "Exec format error", and from dmesg "cifs: no symbol version for module_layout ", the same errors when compiling novuton module and I don't know why I get this error. I noticed that modules in centos are compressed in .xz but after running make M=fs/cifs I got only a .ko kernel module and then I run xz to compress the new module. Can someone help me please? I have been running Mate on Centos 7 for some time but it does not work very well on my HiDPI laptop screen. Today I found that I am running version 1.16 of Mate whereas the current version is 1.22. Undoubtedly many of the issues have been fixed since 1.16 was released in 2016... However, EPEL only provides 1.16 - a release from 2016 - and nothing later. What is the recommended way to upgrade to 1.22?

Virtual manager and vhdx

I am trying to find out if Virtual Manager or qemu directly can take a Hyper v vhdx file and use it "as is"... I desire to not boot windows, update the vhdx image I have created, etc... I'd rather just have the vhdx image sitting on linux, boot the virtual manager with the vhdx file, update what I need to update and shut back down. Is that possible ? Thanks, Jerry

Question on server speed

Hi all, I have a customer server with 32 cores, 128G ram i7960X. So nice box... Why is it that "all" I am really doing at the moment is copying things to an external SSD disk USB3 connected and the machine "freezes"... Why is that? clearly plenty of CPU RAM everything... I can see "blocking" to write data to the external disk - but there are 31 other cores and plenty of memory to make it "seem" as nothing is happening right now. Do I need to 'tweak' something to no see GUI freezes... Waiting on characters to show - even remoted in with SSH experiences the same thing - so its not just X. Thanks for any suggestions. Jerry

[OT] odd network question

I know this is OT, but I'm not sure where else to ask. I can hope for fogiveness! :) My home router sends its logs to the rsyslog on my desktop system, and from there I can learn all kinds of interesting (or disturbing) things. I've written a really horrid shellscript (about 20 things piped together with a temp file in the middle) to give me the count of DROP events for specific incoming ports. (The "Description" field is lifted verbatim from /etc/services.) The data compiled here is for the last month (rsyslog is keeping the current log plus four older logs). I find it disturbing that there were 12251 attempts at telnet during that time, 2154 on 8080, and so forth. either I'm some kind of special/hot target, or else everybody gets this kind of crap and may not even know it. But the one thing I mean to ask about here is the very first item, 140,750 attempts at port 48825. What the heck is port 48825? I can't find any reference to anything that uses it online, but for some reason it is extremely popular, at least amongst the turkeys trying to break into my network! A little more grepping: grep 'DPT=48825' Firewall-Log* | grep -o "SRC=[09123456789.]*" | sort -u -t '.' -k "1.5g,1g" | less reveals that of all the source addresses trying to poke at 48825, there are 193 unique addresses. Either this indicates a heck of a lot of sites having at my firewall, or that some few sites are all spoofing their addresses. I can sort of understand people whaling away at ports that may conceal gold, from their warped point of view, but I haven't a clue why so many people would be beating on some apparently unassigned and unused port. Anyone got any clues? Thanks in advance! Peculiar process name in /proc

Hello, I was looking at a process through the '/proc' file system, and came across a process name which seemed to contain a hex value: lrwxrwxrwx. 1 xymon xymon 0 Aug 2 14:07 /proc/58032/exe -> /usr/sbin/xymond;5d44410e (deleted) I am aware of what the 'deleted' part means, but have no idea what the ';5d44410e' part means. Is this some sort of thread reference? The file '/usr/sbin/xymond' does exist and is running as a daemon. Anyone know what the ';5d44410e' is referring to? I have tried Googling about this, but found no mention of it. gem install reel on Centos 7

Hi - I installed ruby for something... The instructions said to also do the comand: gem install reel ERROR: Error installing reel: timers requires Ruby version >= 2.2.1. [root@devgeis ~]# ruby --version ruby 2.0.0p648 (2015-12-16) [x86_64-linux] Not sure what to do. Wait for Centos 8? Thoughts? Thanks, Jerry
