Been trying to figure out what in the screwball world is going on with this. Tried to install libqt4 and keep getting more dependencies and more dependencies on top of that. Just trying to install KepassX for i386 CentOS 5 Any help?

SUMMARY : multipath using defaults rather than multipath.conf contents for some devices (?) - why ?

The reason for the behaviour observed below turned out to be that the device entry in /etc/multipath.conf was inadvertently appended *after* the devices section , rather than inside it - so that we had #devices { # device { # blah blah # } (file has a bunch of defaults commented out) # etc #} # # device { our settings } *rather than* devices { device { our settings } } Also - looking more closely at our multipath.conf.defaults, there is an entry for a product pattern HSV2.* That would explain why the multipath settings for the HSV200 looked different to the HSV400 - the HSV200 was picking up a different set of defaults. However still not exactly what we had specified. (sort of like CSS behaviour....."cascading multipath.conf defaults" ! :-) ) You also possibly need to pay attention to the basic whitespace formatting of this file - for example I had noticed the above early on and rebooted with it "fixed" , only to find that this meant the system came up unable to even recognise the ext3 filesystem, complaining about bad superblock etc etc. After recovering from that ( see below) I went back ( a week later) and a) made sure that the whitespace - tabs etc - looked like the other commented out defaults and b) added in a second device entry (from the defaults section - not a device we even have) , just in case there was some bug relating to having only one device entry in the "devices" section. Whether because of those or some other change, the system now comes up fine, and with multipath -ll now reporting the correct settings for the HSV400. So issue resolved finally. Touch wood. Here is a useful tip (not news to gurus but was to me ) : when things turn to custard on reboot and everything including the root filesystem is mounted readonly - so you can't even restore multipath.conf to the backup you made before rebooting - you can mount -n -o remount / to remount / as writeable - then you can cd /etc cp multipath.conf.bu1 multipath.conf and breathe a big sigh of relief ! If there are any multipath developers reading this - it could be handy if multipath could log some diagnostic info about how it parses the conf file , and exactly what entry it ends up using , which would then appear in /var/log/messages and /var/log/dmesg, since it seems relatively easy to end up matching a device spec you didn't expect, and the effects on performance are subtle so easy to overlook this. My questions are basically - why is it happening , and how to fix it ? The vendor and product regexps definitely do match both "HSP" and both "HSV200" and "HSV400" respectively so it doesn't seem that fiddling with the patterns will work , and I'm sure this config has been tested. Its not due to this server having to deal with two controllers - we have a second server that only mounts from the HSV400, and its multipath settings appear to be entirely the defaults, and not what we have set. (And conversely, its not due to the conf file not being read at all - since the server with two controllers is using the correct config for one of them , but not the other.) thanks for any tips and I will summarise. mounting images created using dd that contain two partitions

Hi all, I am trying to mount images that I previously created with dd and the images have two partitions (swap and LVM). I use these images to house data for my Xen Guests. For some reason (possibly Kernel conflicts for paravirtualized domains) I am unable to boot my Guest images. Failing which I would like to mount the disk images and atleast get my data out of them. dd -o loop server.img /media/diskimage asks me to provide a file system. How can I mount these images? I have been Googling around for this and have failed to find and answer, can someone please point me in the right direction. Inquiry:Problem in mounting external cdrom

Dear All I tried to mount an external cdrom on my CentOS 5 server but un-successful . I attached the device to my USB port and then the followings have been added to my /dev folder : "cdrom -> scd0 cdrom-sr0 -> scd0 cdrw -> scd0 cdrw-sr0 -> scd0 cdwriter -> scd0 cdwriter-sr0 -> scd0" To this end , I tried to mount it as the followings (but it didn't get through) : #mount -t vfat /dev/cdrom-sr0 /mnt/cdrom Add the following line to /etc/fstab : /dev/cdrom-sr0 /mnt/cdrom vfat noauto,users,noexec,rw, uid=1000,gid=1000 0 0 #mount /mnt/cdrom Can you please do me favor and correct me for my mistakes in mounting it ? samba file locking

Hi, I encountered an interesting problem. We have a Java application on a samba server. The folder is then shared to the clients via a samba share. So far it works OK. Until now we had windows clients and everything worked OK. But now we are trying to Linux clients and this is where the fun starts. When a developer copies a new jar to the folder which is shared via samba. And if this copying is done by scp strange things start happening. After a few clicks the application stops working returning NoClassDeffFound, even if the file is there and readable. After that it is not enough to just stop the application, you have to unmount an then mount the share. I tried turning off oplocks in the samba configuration as suggested in the samba how-to, but it doesn't fix the problem. Has anyone seen a similar error? BR

Storing Kerberos database in OpenLDAP

Hi all, I have created a project for myself in that I would like to store an MIT Kerberos database inside LDAP (Using OpenLDAP). I have found some relevant results but most of them are extremely outdated and unreliable. I did however recently find an article for Ubuntu that was up to date however it wasn't focused on CentOS/Red hat-based distros. centos 5 reboot diagnosis

Hi we use cent OS 5.2 on all our production server, just today one of or mail server had a reboot and we dont understand why ... usually we get a alert if a system was loaded up ... but this system just reboot .... may be it could be a power failure ...( is there any way to check this ) .. but that is the last optiopn i am guess as the server is in IDC . With dmidecode and biosdecode .. i just get server / bios info . In the Messages and Dmesgs ... i cant really pin pont the issue . Is there any thingi am not doing or any thing i am supposed to figure out the reson for this reboot. -- Regards Agnello D'souza

Unless it's a SCSI/SAS RAID controller often times those onboard RAID controllers are of decent quality. RAID 5 as implemented by most disk vendors does have issues at least with large SATA disks - Why RAID 5 stops working in 2009 - http://blogs.zdnet.com/storage/?p=162 A couple vendors that I know of - 3PAR(which I use) and Compellent don't suffer from this limitation because they virtualize the disks, I can't speak too much for Compellent's architecture but 3PAR doesn't RAID physical disks, they raid portions of each disk, when a disk fails, every disk in the system participates in rebuilding that failed set of arrays, which results in upwards of a 10x improvement in recovery time and 90%+ drop in system impact while the arrays are rebuilding. This virtualization also allows you to run multiple levels of RAID on the same spindles for different purposes. The likelihood of suffering a double disk failure on such a system during a RAID rebuild is probably quite a bit less than suffering a triple disk failure on a RAID-6 system which runs RAID on whole physical disks. At full system load my array can recover from a 750GB drive failure in less than 3 hours. Our previous array took nearly 30 hours to recover from a 300GB(SATA) drive failure. If on my array the disk is only half utilized, then it will take half the time to rebuild, as only written data is rebuilt, no point in replicating portions of the disk that haven't been used, though other vendors do this because they don't have the architecture to support sub-disk rebuilds. My own 200-disk array has more than 86,000 individual RAID arrays on it, most of them being RAID 5(5+1). Array management is automatic and transparent to the storage system I just tell it how big a volume I want and what type of data protection. For performance reasons I'm migrating my RAID 5(5+1) to 3+1 next year after I add more space. I miscalculated the growth of the big driver of space on the current system so I had to migrate to 5+1(RAID level migrations have no service impact either on my array). On my system there is roughly only a 9% performance drop from RAID 1+0 to RAID 5+0, so in many cases running RAID 5 on my array is about the same as RAID 1 on other arrays, it's that fast. RAID 6 has a pretty good performance hit vs RAID 5 due to the extra parity disk, on some arrays the performance hit is even greater as the array calculates parity twice, NetApp I think has as good a RAID 6 implementation as there is, though they can't get around writing the parity information to two different disks. nate

I am trying to use logrotate to rotate our web logs for our various vhosted sites to cut down on space and rotate out old logs that are not necessary to keep around personally. What Im curious to find out, is how supported extended regular expressions is within the logrotate.conf file. More specifically, will logrotate be smart enough to decipher the following: /path/to/logs/access_log.www.*.(com|org|net|us) The filename format for my logs are: access_log.www.domain.com/net/org/us. Does anybody know where I can find a driver for a Logitech E2500 webcam. I'm running CentOS 5 on my desktop and want to add a webcam for skype use. If I can yum install a driver from one of the repos that would be great. Andy

Hi all, Sorry for this newbie question. I am having a problem with yum on centos 4.7. When I try something like "yum update" I get the following error: file:///misc/CO4/updates/repodata/repomd.xml: [Errno 5] OSError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/misc/CO4/updates/repodata/repomd.xml' Trying other mirror. Cannot open/read repomd.xml file for repository: update failure: repodata/repomd.xml from update: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try. Error: failure: repodata/repomd.xml from update: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try. I've tried "yum clean all" with no success. I'd be grateful for any help that I could get on this. Thanks. -tim

mdadm size issues

Hi, I am trying to create a 10 drive raid6 array. OS is Centos 5.3 (64 Bit) All 10 drives are 2T in size. device sd{a,b,c,d,e,f} are on my motherboard device sd{i,j,k,l} are on a pci express areca card (relevant lspci info below) #lspci 06:0e.0 RAID bus controller: Areca Technology Corp. ARC-1210 4-Port PCI-Express to SATA RAID Controller The controller is set to JBOD the drives. All drives have the same partition size # fdisk -l Disk /dev/sda: 2000.3 GB, 2000398934016 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 243201 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sda1 1 243201 1953512001 83 Linux .... I go about creating the array as follows # mdadm --create --verbose /dev/md3 --level=6 --raid-devices=10 /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1 /dev/sdd1 /dev/sde1 /dev/sdf1 /dev/sdi1 /dev/sdj1 /dev/sdk1 /dev/sdl1 mdadm: layout defaults to left-symmetric mdadm: chunk size defaults to 64K mdadm: size set to 1953511936K Continue creating array? As you can see mdadm sets the size to 1.9T. Looking around there was this limitation on older versions of mdadm if they are the 32 bit version. I am using the 64 bit most up to date version from Centos. Problem with raid0

Hey! I have big problem with my centos 5.1. I have two hard discs 500gig and 40gig and those are in RAID0. I would like to remowe the small 40gig hd and put new 500gig hd and i don't wan't raid0 anymore. How can i copy data from 40gig hd to 500gig hd and switch 40gig hd to new 500gig hd? Another question: Can i just copy all my files to windows laptop and if i wan't "backup" files? Please answer my talent in linux isn't very good.

I need to install APC (Alternative PHP Cache) but I'm getting a missing dependency error Missing Dependency: php = 5.1.6-23.2.el5_3 is needed by package php-devel. SATA controler req

Hello, I'm looking for a recomendation for a SATA controlers. In the range of 4-8 ports, either PCI or PCIe (for desktop use) and/or PCI-X, PCIe (for server use). I'd especially like it if the Linux driver was already in CentOS or easily added. Everytime I find something interesting, a google search shows up either the drivers is for 2.6.30 (ie, not CentOS), someone tried it and it was unstable, or it has a proprietary driver. They will be used as JBOD, with mdadm for RAID where I need it. Thank you, -Philip

Video capture under CentOS

I recently purchased a Diamond VC500 video capture device that runs on the USB. It has some interesting issues under Windoze, but I was wondering: I did a google for video catpreu and linux and most of what I found either said it can't be done or the software that did/does it is obsolete. I want to thank everyone for contributing to solving the implementation problem I was having. It seems in the end it was an "operator" problem. To summarize the results: - regarding sshd port change - uncomment port, and change the port number entry in /etc/ssh/sshd_config. Restart the sshd service. Update /etc/sysconfig/iptables to reflect the port number change from 22 to the port number specified in / etc/ssh/sshd_config, then restart iptables service. - PasswordAuthentication no - this requires an additional option to be change, "ChallengeResponseAuthentication no". Having made both of these changes, causes the login to abort is a valid ssh key is not specified. Promlem with broken yum/rpm

Hi all, I have lost/corrupted the libraries related to the expat package. This has caused rpm and yum to stop working effectively stopping my ability to manage my server. Recently a bug was reported by cmisare on the CentOS site that had exactly the same symptoms http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=3757 Btw rpm crashes with exactly the same message. I was hoping that cmisare, or someone else on this list, may be able to explain to me how he/she managed to get yum working again, as must be the case as it crashes in the first post but is working in the second post. Any help would be very much appreciated. Peter

MySQL setup: initial user weirdness

Hi, I've always been a bit puzzled by MySQL's initial setup. Right after installing MySQL, no password is set, so that's the first thing I care about. I know there's a way to do that with mysqldadmin, but hey, different ways lead to Saint-Bauzille-de-Montmel. # chkconfig mysqld on # service mysqld start # mysql -u root mysql> use mysql; mysql> select user, host, password from user; +------+-----------+----------+ | user | host | password | +------+-----------+----------+ | root | localhost | | | root | buildbox | | | root | 127.0.0.1 | | | | localhost | | | | buildbox | | +------+-----------+----------+ 5 rows in set (0.00 sec) This shows that in my initial setup, I have no less than five initial users. A root user for three different hosts (localhost, buildbox and 127.0.0.1), and an empty user for two different hosts (localhost and buildbox). I don't know if I'm expected to set five passwords (five times the same? five different passwords?) for these five entities, but what I usually do is just get rid of every initial user except root@localhost. In that case: mysql> delete from user where user = ''; Query OK, 2 rows affected (0.01 sec) mysql> select user, host, password from user; +------+-----------+----------+ | user | host | password | +------+-----------+----------+ | root | localhost | | | root | buildbox | | | root | 127.0.0.1 | | +------+-----------+----------+ 3 rows in set (0.00 sec) Here goes the empty user. Now for the remaining two: mysql> delete from user where host = 'buildbox'; Query OK, 1 row affected (0.01 sec) mysql> delete from user where host = '127.0.0.1'; Query OK, 1 row affected (0.00 sec) Which leaves me with only root@localhost: mysql> select user, host, password from user; +------+-----------+----------+ | user | host | password | +------+-----------+----------+ | root | localhost | | +------+-----------+----------+ 1 row in set (0.00 sec) And now I can define a password for that single initial user: mysql> set password for root@localhost = password('my_secret_password'); mysql> select user, host, password from user; +------+-----------+------------------+ | user | host | password | +------+-----------+------------------+ | root | localhost | 2d97271970b60f82 | +------+-----------+------------------+ 1 row in set (0.00 sec) mysql> quit; And from now on, I can safely connect to the MySQL monitor using mysql -u root -p. installing 5.3 with 512M ram really slow

I was installing centos 5.3 x86_64 on a sempron 2.7G machine with 512M ram. The install started off fine then REALLY SLOWED down about 70% into install. I did have a swap space. after that it just crawled. I tried restart the install a couple times at 512M. Same thing around 70% the slow down. I then put in 1G of RAM and everything zipped on past and finished fine. Does 5.3 have minimum installation RAM requirements? I had not noticed. Does the same apply for running? 5.2 did not seem to have any issues running in 512M that I recall. Thanks for your comments. jerry

Has anyone else had similar problems with the following options in sshd_config: - Port 6666 - if I set the port to anything other than 22 (default), using ssh -p6666 name@servername, does not work. Yet if I leave keep the default, then ssh name@servername allows me to login. - PasswordAuthentication no - if I set this option to "no" (default is "yes"), and my ssh key is either missing or in error, I will be prompted for user system login password. If this is set to "no", it should not allow me to login if I have not ssh key specified or in error. Has anyone else run into this problem. Is there a workaround? What are my options? Please help.

Question about iostat output

Hello, We are planning to moving most of our servers to ESX but before buying our SAN, we want to do some I/O stats to see if iSCSI is enough or if we have to go with FC. So I found a plugin for Nagios that can log I/O stats with iostat. So far it's fine with single disk/one partition servers, but on our Oracle Database 10g server, we have two drives in RAID 1 (/dev/sda) and 4 other drives in RAID 10 (/dev/sdb). Xnest unable to connect with firewall enabled

Hi all, I have worked on both CentOS 5.2 and CentOS 5.3. In CentOS 5.2, I could connect to a remote X-server using Xnest binary provided by the package xorg-x11-server-Xnest-1.1.1-48.41.el5 with firewall settings enabled. I enabled the firewall settings from system-config-securitylevel. Now in CentOS 5.3 with firewall settings enabled, I am unable to connect to the remote X-server using Xnest (xorg-x11-server-Xnest-1.1.1-48.52.el5). To successfully connect, I have to either disable firewall settings or filter the TCP ports on which Xnest connects to the remote server. Is there an issue regarding firewall settings in CentOS 5.3 ? I want to connect to the remote X-server without disabling the firewall settings. How is possible ? Thanks in advance. Siddharth

dhcpd logging to dhcpd.log only

I've added this to my dhcpd.conf log-facility local6; and added this to my syslog.conf local6.* /var/log/dhcpd.log It's still writing to dhcpd info to both log files. How do I stop this. I've googled but all suggested modifications I've made to the dhcpd.conf causes dhcpd to not start. Thanks Dan

Hi, My requirement is to use Xnest only. It was working seamlessly with 5.2 but not with 5.3 I am using this command to connect to the remote X-server. Xnest :1 -geometry 800x600 -query *<ip-address-of-X-server>* Can anyone confirm the same behavior? Or shall I file the bug in bugzilla? Hi, I need some help to clarify TTY and virtual consoles. Thanks a lot. 1. I learned that to switch from one TTY to another, one must be at the physical machine. Does the same apply to virtual consoles? 2. My /etc/inittab includes the following. network not starting and maybe other services in a virtual machine

I am installing centos 5.3 i386 in a virtual machine. I am using kvm-87 (which I use for other images just fine). The box installed fine, it boots up I can login but NONE of the services are starting . When watching the boot up process it goes from the "Welcome to CentOS 5.3 " directly to mounting the partitions and a login prompt. All the services are not being started. What didnt happen at install? or what do I check now. /etc/inittab looks normal. Thanks, Jerry

How does LVM decide which Physical Volume to write to?

Hi everyone. This isn't specifically a CentOS question, since it could apply for any distro but I hope someone can answer it anyway. I took the following steps but was puzzled by the outcome of the test at the end: 1. Create a RAID1 array called md3 with two 750GB drives 2. Create a RAID1 array called md9 with two 500GB drives 3. Initialise md3 then md9 as physical volumes (pvcreate) 4. Create a new volume group called "3ware" with md3 (helps me remember what controller the disks are on) 5. Use vgextend and add md9 to the 3ware volume group. 6. Add a logical volume filling the volume group then create a ext3 filesystem on the entire volume. Now I started moving a lot of data onto the volume and iostat said all the data was being written to md9. Why that array? How does it decide which physical volume to write to? I could not find any documentation or information online about how exactly this works. Thanks! Oliver

Hi, I have an Nginx http proxy server with SSL. What I want to do is: If a client that has a certificate is trying to access the server's address, he is to be redirected to our production server, to certain URL. If a client doesn't have a certificate, he is to be redirected to the same production server, but a different URL. The problem is that if the client doesn't have a certificate, he gets the following error: 400 Bad Request The SSL certificate error ------------------------------------------------------------------------ nginx/0.6.39 I've tried the following: server { listen 8443; ssl on; ssl_certificate /etc/httpd/ssl/proxy-ssl.cer; ssl_certificate_key /etc/httpd/ssl/server.key; ssl_client_certificate /etc/httpd/ssl/ca-bundle.crt; ssl_verify_client on ............................................................................................. ............................................................................................. error_page 400 /400.html; location = /400.html { root /usr/share/nginx/html; but the error page 400 statement is simply ignored. Does anyone have an idea how can I do it ? I tried to find the 400 error page, thinking maybe I can make the redirect there, but it is simply not to be found. Hi, I successfully managed to use SSL on a local webserver for testing purposes, following the section "Using SSL" in the Chapter "Using Apache" of the "Definitive Guide to CentOS". Now I wonder: how can I use SSL with virtual hosts? I have several virtual hosts defined. Apache: confusion about virtual hosts and DNS on a local network

Hi, I set up a webserver with Apache on one of the machines on the local network. There's a DNS configured for the LAN, with a dummy domain name (presbytere.local), and every machine is pingable by its hostname. The webserver runs on the machine 'buildbox'. The webserver actually has two (static) websites on it, for testing and fiddling purposes. Each site's pages are stored respectively under /var/www/html/microlinux and /var/www/html/kikinovak. I can reach the two websites from any machine on the local network by opening a web browser at http://buildbox/microlinux/ or http://buildbox.presbytere.local/microlinux/ for the first website, and http://buildbox/kikinovak resp. http://buildbox.presbytere.local/kikinovak for the second website. So far so good. Now I'd like to setup two virtual hosts on the server, so I can access the first site via http://microlinux.buildbox and the second site via http://kikinovak.buildbox. I tried various combinations that seemed to make sense, but to no avail. Here is a list of files that I have not (knowingly) modified that do not pass rpm verification immediately after I installed centos 5.3. I am not really sure what this means - are the packagers sending out sloppy rpms, or is something going around modifying stuff? Other than the texmf stuff, the list seems to consist entirely of config files. Does yum or rpm or something do some instant reconfiguring when a package gets installed? Maybe figure out if there is a post-install script and whether it does something. Googling, I see lots of hits suggesting that 'yum info <packagename>' will show what repo it came from. Testing this on a couple of the packages above, I get 'Repo : installed'. Does that mean that the rpm came from the install CD? Am I missing something, is there an easier way>? mahalo, Dave

Hi, I'm currently fiddling with protecting sections of a website with .htaccess. AuthType Basic require valid-user The configuration works OK (after having created a valid user), but unfortunately, the message in the infobox that pops up on the site displays the french characters é and à incorrectly. Be assured that such laws do exist and are enforced in each and every country that the maintainers reside in. The Internet is not terra nullius. If you provide a product or service and accept valuable consideration in return then you have earned income. It is tempting, and emotionally satisfying, to argue that cannot be so, that there is no relationship between the two because one is not compelled to buy CentOS. Sadly, this proves not to be the case. If you get income from any source, for whatever reason, then you must declare it and pay whatever tax is levied. Whether you received it personally or as part of an identifiable collective you are personally liable. Now, what happens if some, or many, or all of the CentOS maintainers ends up dealing with say one, or two or N taxation authorities over the small matter of the taxes outstanding on the thousands of Euros already donated? What happens then to the future of the CentOS project? What happens to the probability of a successful successor project? Somehow, I do not think that such a turn of events would improve the odds. Trust, well that is another matter. The number of sports clubs, churches, charities and service organisations that have been ripped off by individuals who betrayed their fellow members' trust is uncountable. No doubt most, if not all, of these people once warranted the trust reposed in them. However, as the Bernie Madoff case shows once again, trust without verification invites betrayal. Money is a very corrosive material to place in the hands of people absent public oversight. It needs to be treated with both caution and circumspection lest it destroy that which it is intended to aid. Best way to backup and entire machine??

I want to mirror a Centos box, not having done this before, I'm looking for guidance. What is the best way to perform this task, I have a running webserver, a single external IP address to the website, and wanted to protect myself should the server go down. My though would be a mirror of that webserver, running in background, if the main server dies, then just move the mirror in place, change the IP and go on... Limiting down time... John Plemons

hi all I am looking for a program that will "hide" a window when it opens under X11. There is a program called devilspie but it requires gnome-panel to be running to work. On some of my workstations I dont have gnome-panel running. So I was wondering if there is a program like devilspie that does not require gnome-panel to be running to hide a program window. The window I am trying to hide is the openoffice impress window that edits the power point. I just want to show the power point. is there such a program or is there a better method to not show the edit window on impress and just show the power point. Thanks Jerry

I have also killed the simple greeter, and it respawned, and started griping again. So, where is it storing this, and, more important, *WHY* is it caching this? getting ftp log reports

Hello, I'm running pure-ftpd on a centos 5.3 machine. I'm encountering a situation where i need to get log reports of user logins and logouts and tracking the files got, atempted anonymous user logins those should preferably go in to a firewall rule block list, and atempted hack ins, same thing as anonymous user logins. Can anyone suggest a package for creating and then emailing say 3 to 4 times a day reports of activity? Thanks. Dave.

I have an old windows NT machine, that I would like to virtualize under CentOS and xen. The problem is, that the machine has an old PCI card that is used for some sensor control. I tried to google the topic, but there isn't any useful tutorial, how to do this under CentOS. What I found out is, that I need a machine that supports the Intel VT-d technology and at least XEN 3.3. Does someone on this list have any real world experience with this?

Xen Kernel 2.6.18-164 and Hypervisor 3.3.1 problem.

Hi, I just upgraded the my Dom0 kernel on my Xen machine and it failed to boot. The hypervisor itself comes from the Gitco repository. I couldn't catch the exact reason, other than it said something about no proper root and failing to synch. It rebooted a second or so later and I can't seem to find the relevant log. As I learned from the other thread this is an early release of the kernel. Should I wait until the rest of the release catches up before trying to resolve this, or should I try now? Should I treat it as a Xen issue or a CentOS issue. The system boots fine on the non-Xen variant of the kernel and fin in the previous kernel Thanks in advance, Ian.

Confusion about 32 vs 64 bit jre

I ran a yum update yesterday and got the new kernel and other goodies, and I've rebooted and all seems to be well. Except, I just tried to run Firefox for the first time, and it wants a new jre (6.16). Now that's fine, except that I have a recollection of needing the 32-bit jre the last time I did this, but that's not working. I'm pulling down the 64-bit version, but I'm wondering if I need both, which, IIRC, does not work, or which one of the two? (I _am_ running the x86_64 OS and most apps.) What bothers me is that I've tried both, and apparently neither one works (!!!!). I installed by downloading the bin file (self-extracting rpm), and then running the bin with sudo. Where did I go wrong? mhr

No login with kernel 2.6.18-164.el5

Hello, since kernel 2.6.18-164.el5 no user could login any more from nfs client into his home directory on nfs server. The kde error message is: "The following installation problem was detected while trying to start KDE: Writing to $HOME directory (/home/<USER>) failed with the error 'Permission denied' KDE is unable to start." /home is exported with nfs4 (gss/krb5), the password is delivered by nis. Everything works fine if I reboot the nfs server into the previous kernel 2.6.18-128.7.1.el5. Then it is completely irrelevant which kernel version the client has. So /home export by nfs4 works for client with kernel versions 2.6.18-164.el5 and 2.6.18-128.7.1.el5. The sound is bad, / Lance vanished from the project some time in 2008. Everybody needs time off from projects from time to time, so there was no real need to worry about that. What there was to worry about is the following: Lance is the only one, who can make active changes to the centos.org domain, as he “owns it”. Nobody else in the team is able to add nameservers, for instance. sadc output to a circular file of given size?

Hey folks, We have Munin set up for longer term performance monitoring stuff, and it has been extremely useful to us for what it does. However, it is hard coded to poll systems at 5 minute intervals, which of course proves not to be so useful when you have to dig down into more detail on something. What we typically do for load tests where we need more detail, is run this command : /usr/lib64/sa/sadc -d -I -F 2 /var/log/foo/bar Which of course logs data every 2 seconds. We now have a problem with our PostgreSQL server and want to set something up to record sadc data more frequently than the 1 minute limitation of cron. Though 2 seconds is probably a bit much, we are thinking more like 5 or 10 seconds. So the above command would be ideal. Except ... what if it fills up the disk? I looked at the man page and do not see any obvious way to get it to write out to a file of given size, and just keep overwriting the oldest data in that file. That way would could pre-allocate a big file of a given size, and be able to store the last X minutes of sadc data. So when the PG system crashes again (sigh), we can review the data for the last X minutes before the crash. One solution I could think of is if there is some kind of filesystem to implement this sort of circular file. Any ideas? Any other obvious solution I am missing? Updating old CentOS 4 DNS servers to CentOS 5, one of our zones has a number of entries with underscores in. Starting named results in the following error and named refusing to start. masters/example.com.db:33: mail_server.example.com: bad owner name (check-names) I've tried including check-names master ignore; in the options but this isn't making any difference. I've read a lot of debate on whether underscores should be allowed, but for the time being we're stuck with these entries so I need to get this working. Any thoughts? Thanks, jc

I did visit the link and found what I interpreted as a replacement iso for the first disk of 4. Did I misinterpret something ? I downloaded disks 2 through 4 from the Ga. Tech mirror and burned them as well, all apparently without error. However, when I attempted to run a media check from "i586 text nousb" the first disk passed but the others resulted in "unable to find install image on /tmp/cdrom" (or something close to that, I am quoting from memory). I looked at the disks and they appear to be OK, and I burned them with the same commands I used for disk 1. Does this mean I needed to gets disks 2 through 4 elsewhere ? Only disk 1 of the set was on the link I visited. Another question, and perhaps I need to google this more but thought I'd ask: On the system I am trying to install this I already have on hda msdos and RH9. I have a large disk on hdc, however, with lots of free space. It appeared that by telling the installation program to use only hdc I could successfully put CentOS there, but when it came time to tell grub what other systems to boot I it recognized dos on hda1, but I could find no way to add RH9 on hda2. It seemed that I was limited to only two operating systems. Is there a way around this ? (If not I intend to physically swap the hard disks and just install on the new hda, keeping stuff on the old hdc for reference). But if it is possible to keep the two existing systems on hda and put CentOS on hdc, and have grub on the mbr of hda control the boot I'd like to do that. Thanks, Buz Davis

Dependency problem between cman and openais with last cman update

Hi. Today I have updated my cluster installation with the version cman-2.0.115-1 through yum update. When I have started the cman service , it fails. If I execute cman_tool debug I get the following error : [CMAN ] CMAN 2.0.115 (built Sep 16 2009 12:28:10) started aisexec: symbol lookup error: /usr/libexec/lcrso/service_cman.lcrso: undefined symbol: openais_shutdown_errorstring_register cman_tool: Cannot open connection to cman, is it running ? My openais version is openais-0.80.3-22.el5_3.9. Their sources don't have that function defined. Searching through Redhat's source tree, I have discovered an openais-0.80.2-1.el5.src.rpm packet. I don't know whether this version belongs to Redhat 5.3 or 5.4 release, but the function openais_shutdown_errorstring_register is defined here. I can return to previous version of cman, but I'd like know whether this problem will be solved for CentOS 5.3 or I'll have to wait for CentOS 5.4 with a new openais version. anyone know anything about using openssl 0.9.7b in EL4 w/ pkcs#11 supported smartcard/etokens? I need to figure out how to set this up so a webclient application can use token based certificate with a https connection to the tomcat xmlrpc server with a minimum of fuss. the actual client app is in python but will be using m2Crypto which in turn uses openssl. i CAn find lots on login w/ tokens, and web browser with tokens, but very few clues about doing this with openssl. supposedly the hardware token support was a patch/hack for openssl 0.9.6 and is an available compile option in .7b which is what EL4 uses... I've searched upstream's KB without finding anything useful...

rpm corrupted, ftp server?

Hello, I'm running pure-ftpd 1.21-16 on centos 5.3. A user sent me some files, some rpms and a few patch files. The rpms do not show up right, they record as data rather than rpm or tar or zip or whatever. I am not certain if it's pure-ftpd corrupting these files, the patches showed up empty and i was assured everything was working on the other end, or if the user uploaded binary files in ascii. If the latter can i fix them? If the former any suggestions? Thanks. Dave.

Slow network

Hi, I have problem with a Centos 5.3 computer. The networking is very slow. The networking card is a RealTek 1GigE. I plugged an Ubuntu laptop on the same cable and port with an Intel GigE, and it's about 8 to 10 times faster. So the problem is likely to be with the CentOS config. Any suggestion on how to track down the problem with speed. I have checked the packets with wireshark, no problem. generate core dump for process

Hi all. I ran "ulimit -c unlimited" as root on my machine (centos 5.3 x86_64) when I run the process it is getting SIGSEGV but not creating a core dump? What else do I need to do to get a core dump file when I run "gdb myprocess" the SIGSEGV does not happen. Jerry

bind dns help?

Hello, I've recently inherited a network with bind dns already set in it.. the thing is, the previous admin added our networks "domain" as our default company's website.. lets say "abcd.com" first of all, I'm a complete newbie with DNS under linux so I've sruggled my way and finally landed on webmin that helps me out in adding local dns records. though the problem occurs whenever there's a url on our website that needs to be accessed... let me explain.. a.. I can browse to abcd.com b.. I can browse to local.abcd.com c.. but I cannot access public.abcd.com as the dns search for "public" under it's records and it cannot find it.. how can I solve this? changing the domain is in no way possible, as there's almost 200 virtual host setup in my local network.. so I need a quick solution for this.. any advice? PS: if any of you can guide me to a good DNS under centos tutorial I'll appreciate it

FYI: Why is NFS slower on EL5 than EL4?

For those who have wondered why NFS on EL5 is slower than on EL4 I provide these links for your edification. http://kbase.redhat.com/faq/docs/DOC-15355 http://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=448130 Problem is kernel threads cannot create or assign an io context as there is no api in the kernel available to do so, so each is given a different context and there is an 8ms latency between switching contexts. The knowledge base article recommends disabling this latency to get around it, but in doing that you might as well just use the deadline scheduler. Some other interesting tidbits for those using NFS. NFS with many nfsd threads will create a lot of file system fragments when writing large files. XFS does have the advantage of a defragger (I hope some smart person will develop one for ext2/3/4), but I am still looking for a better way to protect against fragmentation then running a defragger, so if anyone has an alternative I'm all ears. Another hint for those using NFS with ESX, make sure your vmdk partitions are 4k aligned or there is a serious performance penalty as 2 reads for each write will happen if the io request stradles a page boundary. This is more serious for random io than sequential, but both are effected. To give an example, my NFS storage with write-back cache was only able to do 1MB/s (4k direct io 4 outstanding) on a non-aligned partition, on an aligned partition I was able to get 13MB/s with the same workload. That's 13x improvement. For Linux you can use fdisk/sfdisk to start your first partition on sector 64 instead of the default 63. On Windows use diskpart to create a partition that is aligned on a given offset. -Ross

Wireless Printing

My home network doesn't have any wireless access points (to slow) and I was iSCSI booting my wkst for a while:) Now I need to setup a printer so I was going to get an HP Photosmart C4580. The HPLIP page shows no network support:( I _was_ going to use a USB wireless nic I have and setup an ad-hoc to print to this thing. Anyone know anything that might make this work? Thanks! jlc

Hi, I am trying to secure my CentOS file systems by introducing "nodev" to devies defined in /etc/fstab. I learned that "nodev" prevents users from mounting unauthorized devices. Hi List, We currently have a very irritating problem with Centos 5.3 x86_64 running on a Dell Poweredge SC1435. The problem is this: We are experiencing frequent kernel panics while using glusterfs and Fuse. Across the cluster of servers, we are experiencing roughly 1 panic every 1-2 days. This wasn't a problem with earlier servers where we used Fedora 6. A little background, Gluster is used to share some directories which are used by apache to serve files from. I've managed to replicate the live environment inside a virtual machine, and also to replicate the kernel panic by loading the virtual machine's apache with ApacheBench, at as few as 3 concurrent requests, the kernel locks up. However, i have been unable to reproduce this exact behavior on the live cluster, and have tried up to 10,000 concurrent requests which max out the network more than anything. I've tried latest versions of gluster and fuse from development snapshots and stable releases, I've tried patched versions of fuse released by Gluster. Nothing seems to improve this problem. If anyone has any ideas for further debugging, or other routes for support. I'm running out of ideas. A nice book, but it gave me crazy idea: One of the recommendations (which sounds very reasonable to me) was to have instead of a single file that serves as a disk-image to have to files: one of them (which is mounted to hda1) serves as a partition that holds the data, the other one (which mounts to hda2) is the swap partition. The text in the books (admittedly it's a bit vague there) lead me to the conclusion that to the Xen-machine they will look like two partitions of a single drive hda. The advantage should be that it is much easier to extend the data partition (Take the machine offline. Extend the image with dd. Extend the filesystem on the image) I created the two files as described in book. "Formatted" them with mkswap and mkfs.ext3 (as described in the book) and added them to the configuration file for the host. Now when I start the installation of the host machine right in the beginning I get a message "/dev/hda1 has a loop partition layout. To use this disk for the installation of CentOS it must be initialized". When I don't allow formatting I get caught in a loop ("Is a loop partition. Initialize?"), when I allow formatting I get a partition on each of the devices (hda11 and hda21) and I would be allowed to go on with the installation, but IMHO this would defeat the purpose of the exercise So my question: - is there some error in thinking on my side? - is this a situation that the installer can't deal with? (in other words: would it work if I copied a complete installation into the root partition-image and then booted that?) - or is there a reason that using partition images is not very popular (Googling around did not reveal anything useful) Bernhard
